In "More Certainties For Believers," Gabe Stalnaker addresses the doctrine of assurance, highlighting the certain nature of salvation and its resulting blessings for believers. He emphasizes that salvation is entirely of God’s sovereign grace, rejecting any notions of conditional acceptance based on human decisions or actions. Key Scripture references include Psalm 55:22, John 6:37, and Hebrews 13:5, which collectively illustrate the unwavering assurance of salvation and God's promises to sustain His people. The sermon further explores the practical implications of this assurance, such as certain trust, peace, strength, direction, provision, and rest, ultimately grounding these truths in the redemptive work of Christ.

Key Quotes

“The certainty of our salvation. That's what I love about the salvation of Jesus Christ. It is certain.”

“Salvation is certain. God did it. Man didn't do it. God made the decision, man didn't.”

“Because of the certain salvation in Christ's blood, here are some certain results that all of God's people get to experience and enjoy.”

“If the eye of faith ever becomes fixed on Christ, that won't be a problem anymore.”

What does the Bible say about the certainty of salvation?

The Bible assures us that salvation is certain, as God will never cast out those He has chosen.

The certainty of salvation is prominently presented in Scripture. In John 6:37, Jesus states, 'All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.' This underscores the assurance that once someone has been given to Christ by the Father, they will necessarily come to Him. In John 10:28, Jesus further emphasizes this certainty by saying, 'I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish.' Thus, the Scriptures provide a solid foundation for the believer's confidence in salvation, affirming that it is not contingent on human action but secured by God Himself.

John 6:37, John 10:28

Why is certain trust important for Christians?

Certain trust ensures that believers have confidence in God's promises and provisions.

Certain trust is vital for Christians because it reflects our confidence in God's unfailing promises. Psalm 37:5 instructs us to 'commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass.' This trust is not mere hope but a firm reliance on God's ability to direct our paths and fulfill His promises. Our trust is anchored in the certainty of our salvation, which allows us to surrender our worries and fully depend on God's wisdom and provision. When we have this certainty, we approach our lives with a peace that surpasses understanding, knowing that God will faithfully lead us according to His good purpose.

Psalm 37:5

How do we know that God provides for His people?

God's provision for His people is assured throughout Scripture, promising both spiritual and physical needs.

The Scriptures consistently affirm God's provision for His people, highlighting His faithfulness in meeting their needs. In Psalm 23:1, it proclaims, 'The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want,' indicating that God provides everything necessary for spiritual sustenance. Matthew 6:31-33 reinforces this by reminding us not to worry about our needs, for 'your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.' When we seek God's kingdom first, He promises to supply our needs. This assurance brings comfort to believers, knowing that they will not be forsaken and that God's provision will extend to every aspect of their lives, both spiritually and physically.

Psalm 23:1, Matthew 6:31-33

What does the Bible say about peace for believers?

Believers are promised perfect peace when their minds are focused on God.

The concept of peace in the life of a believer is profoundly significant in Scripture. Isaiah 26:3 states, 'Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.' This verse highlights that true peace is not dependent on external circumstances but is rooted in our trust in God. Even amidst turmoil, God's promise is that He will provide perfect peace to those whose thoughts are anchored in Him. This peace transcends all understanding and guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7), assuring us that we are secure in His sovereign purpose and presence.

Isaiah 26:3, Philippians 4:7

Why is assurance of salvation crucial for Christians?

Assurance of salvation provides believers with confidence in their standing before God and freedom from fear.

The assurance of salvation is crucial for Christians as it helps to affirm our identity and acceptance in Christ. Hebrews 10:22 encourages us to draw near 'with a true heart in full assurance of faith.' This confidence arises from a recognition that our standing before God is based on Christ's righteousness, not our own. When believers comprehend that God looks at them through the lens of Christ's completed work, their fear and anxiety about their salvation dissipate. The assurance fosters a deep sense of peace and security, enabling believers to live out their faith boldly and to serve God without the fear of condemnation.

Turn with me, if you would, to Psalm 55 again. Psalm 55. Two and a half weeks ago, we had a Wednesday night message from this psalm titled, the certainty of salvation. And verse 22 was the focus of our text. It says, cast thy burden upon the Lord and he shall sustain thee. The Lord shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. I told you that what grabbed me in that verse was the word never. He'll never, he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

That's good news. The certainty of our salvation. That's what I love about the salvation of Jesus Christ. It is certain. The certainty of our salvation. The certainty of our foundation. On Christ, the solid rock we stand. How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in his excellent word.

We turned to scriptures like John 6 verse 37 that says, all that the father giveth me shall come to me and him that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out. That's a, that's a lot of people. That's among a lot of God's people's favorite verses. It really is one of my favorites. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me and him that cometh to me I'll in no wise cast out.

We turned over to John 10 verse 28 which says, I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish. Neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. Don't you love that kind of certainty? We looked at Hebrews 13 verse 5 where our Lord said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

And we ended that message with 2 Corinthians 1, 19 and 20 where Paul said, all the promises of God are not yea and nay, In Christ, they're all yea. They're all yea. All the promises of God in him are yea, and in him, amen unto the glory of God. That was two and a half Wednesdays ago, two and a half weeks ago, not two and a half Wednesdays, two and a half weeks.

Well, the next day on a Thursday, a brother who lives in another state sent me a text, he listened to it on the internet, he sent me a text thanking me for the message. And he said that it brought to his mind so many other wonderful things that are certain for believers. We looked at the certainty of salvation, that was our subject matter. And his text was only that long. But, Because our salvation is so certain, it made him think of how certain the results and the effects of that salvation are. And in this little text, he listed five things. And he said, you know, after he listed them, he said, that's just scratching the surface.

We could go on and on. And I was thinking, well, go on and on. I was also thinking what a wonderful outline that would be. And I was hoping that God's spirit would bless it to my heart and turn it into a message for us and he did, he did. I just want to very simply pick up where we left off two and a half weeks ago and look at a few more certainties for God's people as a result of their certain salvation. And that's how I want to begin this.

I want us to all fully understand salvation is certain. It's not up to chance. You know, are all of God's people going to be saved? We're not going to stand in a pulpit and say, well, yes and no. It's yes and amen. Yay and amen. Did God choose them? Yes and amen. Well, yeah and no. Did Christ redeem them? Yay and amen. Is it finished? Yay and amen. But what, don't they have to accept it?

Now you gotta believe though, no and no. Salvation is certain. God did it. Man didn't do it. God made the decision, man didn't. God did the work and man didn't. Salvation's finished. It's finished. Okay, there's nothing to do. See y'all later. It's finished.

All right, the certainty of salvation. Because of the certainty of the payment of Christ's blood. Our God said, when I see that blood, I will pass over you. That's certain. Because of the certain salvation in Christ's blood, here are some certain results that all of God's people get to experience and enjoy. And this is so true. It's why I just enjoyed it so much. This brother gave some scriptures with each one and I've added a few to them. I hope this will be an encouragement to you like it was to me.

Turn over to Psalm 37. Psalm 37 verse 5, and as we read these, read them in a real way. Don't read them in the past or applying to somebody else from the Old Testament who's holier than you. Read them right now for yourself in a real way. Psalm 37 verse 5 says, commit thy way unto the Lord.

Trust also in him and he shall bring it to pass. Oh, the certainty of our trust. That's what he listed in that text. The certainty of our trust. When I read that, I thought, what a blessing. The certainty of our trust. Trust. It's certain. It's certain trust.

Commit thy way unto the Lord. What does that mean? That means whatever my way is, that's his decision, his doing it. Whatever you say the way is, that's what the way is. Commit your way to the Lord. Trust in what he decides. Trust in what he purposed and will carry out because he's going to bring it to pass. Trust in him. Because of the certainty of our salvation, we get to experience certain trust in our Savior. Sometimes we trust people, hoping for the best, but not with certainty. And I'll give you a little example.

When your child becomes old enough to start driving your car. All right, when your child becomes old enough to start driving your car, and you turn over your keys to that child, and you sit down in the passenger seat, it takes trust to do that. If you don't have a level of trust, you can't do it. You just can't do it. It takes trust to do that.

And you're hoping for the best. But you're far from feeling certainty. Does that make sense? Now, entering into that, does that cause you to enter in more to the glorious trust that we get to enjoy in our Lord Jesus Christ? We're not hoping for the best. We are not hoping that he has a wonderful plan for our life. and hoping that we don't mess it up and the devil doesn't mess it up and hopefully he'll get to bring it all to pass. That's not us.

It's certain. I mean, it's certain. Commit that way to him. Turn the keys over to him and get in the passenger seat. You know, people say, God's my co-pilot. There's no steering wheel in the passenger seat. Turn it over to him. It's certain. It's absolutely certain.

Turn with me to Isaiah 26. Isaiah 26 verse 3, it says, Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusteth in thee. Our peace is certain. In the certain redemption of the cross of Christ, it's not just peace, it's perfect peace. It's perfect peace. Look right here at verse 12. It says, Lord, thou wilt ordain peace for us, for thou also hast wrought all our works in us. Even if there's no peace taking place around us, certain peace is taking place in us.

Even if our minds and our hearts are torn all to pieces and worried sick, All right, let me really make this clear. Even if our minds are absolutely torn all to pieces and worried sick, if our hearts are just failing us, it's irrelevant. Even if that's happening, it's irrelevant.

Our God is still keeping us in perfect peace because he's keeping us in Christ, who is our peace. We have certain peace, we get to enjoy certain Peace. This flesh does stay torn all to pieces. We know this. It stays completely torn all to pieces. But this flesh is not our peace. You know, people say, I just don't have any peace. I just don't have any peace. Well, no, you wouldn't have it there. This flesh is not our peace. Christ is our peace. And he has ordained and wrought and won and secured certain peace for us, certain peace. Every battle that needed to be fought was fought in him.

There's no more battles to fight for a soul who has certain salvation. There'll be no more battles with God. It's nothing but peace. There's no more battle with sin. I know that we still have to live out the rest of our days in this flesh, and we think we're fighting with sin, but we can't win the battle with sin. Christ did. The battle with sin was already fought for God's people on the cross of Calvary, and sin was defeated, and it's no longer our enemy, meaning it doesn't have dominion over us. We're still living it out, but it doesn't have dominion. It's not gonna bring us down. And because of that, we have received certain peace. We have certain peace.

We get to experience and enjoy in the mind, in the heart, in the soul, in Christ, certain peace. Certain trust, certain peace. Verse three says, thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord forever, for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength. Certain trust, certain peace, certain strength. Turn to Isaiah 32. Isaiah 32 is a great verse. Isaiah 32, look at verse 17. And the work of righteousness shall be peace. And the effect of righteousness, quietness, and assurance forever.

We have certain assurance, certain assurance. Sometimes you hear people say that they are struggling to find assurance. And as long as men and women are looking to the flesh, that will always be the case. That will always be the case. As long as we're looking to the flesh, that's the biggest downfall that we all have by nature is when it comes to the things of God, our eyes go right here, right here. They don't need to go here. They need to go there.

And as long as we're looking here, you know, we want to, is God happy with me? As long as we do that, there will be no assurance. No assurance. But if the Holy Spirit of God will ever turn our eyes to the Lord Jesus Christ, if the eye of faith ever becomes fixed on Christ, that won't be a problem anymore. That just will not be a problem anymore.

People say, you know, man, they get honest, they get sincere, and it's good to, it's good to get honest. But people say, I just, I don't see, you know, everything that's commanded, I just don't see it in myself. I don't know, I just, this is what it says and I'm not seeing it. Yeah, but do you see it in Christ? People say, I'm not good enough.

Yeah, but is Christ good enough? Oh, absolutely, he's good enough. He does all things well. I just don't see how God could be pleased with me. Yeah, but do you see how God could be pleased with Christ? Do you see how God could look at Christ and say, well done, thou good and faithful servant.

He's your representative before God. You're not your own representative before God if you're in him. He's the one standing in your place. This is the greatest news I know to tell any sinner. God is not looking at you and your righteousness. You don't have one. God is looking at Christ and his righteousness.

When it comes to God's people, where are they? Where are God's people? In Christ. If you want to see God's people, where do you have to look? Christ. They're in Christ. And when God looks at us, he's looking at Christ. He's looking at Christ's righteousness and Christ's word.

No, yours are not good enough. Never going to be. As a matter of fact, all of your reward is based on his deeds. And that's all because on the cross of Calvary, his reward on the cross of Calvary was based on your deeds. You talk about God's not happy with me look at the cross of Calvary, no God was not happy with me. When God looked at Christ he saw me and now when God looks at me he sees Christ.

Does hearing that in Christ, and again, I go back to the first time I heard these things and realized these things, and I just, sometimes I've heard people laugh at the gospel, and it makes me laugh on the inside. I still laugh on the inside. But think about this.

Does hearing that in Christ, you're gonna get to hold up before the judgment throne of God Almighty, Only the record of Christ's works and Christ's thoughts and Christ's feelings. You know, the scripture says the books are going to be open. You're going to be judged based on what you did. On the cross of Calvary, Christ came to all of his people and he said, give me your book. Give me your record of deeds, everything you've done, everything you've thought, everything you've said, everything you felt, and he held it up before the judgment throne of God. And in return, he said, take this.

This is my book. And if everything that he did on this earth was written, all the good deeds that he accomplished was written. The world couldn't contain the book. That's what the scripture says, if everything he did was written down, this world physically couldn't contain the books. And every one of his people gets a book. And when the books are opened, That's what we get to hold up. Does that relieve you? All the deeds of Christ counted as your very own.

Does that give you more assurance before God? I'd say that gives me certain assurance. If I get to do that, then that's certain assurance. While this world of false religion is so worried about losing their salvation. So worried about whether they've done enough to please God. They haven't, no one has, but Christ has. And in him, God's people get to enjoy certain assurance.

And that certain assurance brings this right here, go with me to Isaiah 11. Man, this is a good verse right here. Isaiah 11 verse 10. And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, that's Christ, which shall stand for a sign of the people. To it To that sign, to Christ, shall the Gentiles seek, and his rest shall be glorious.

We, the redeemed people of God, get to enjoy certain rest, comforting, quiet, Our Lord said, come unto me all you that labor and are heavy laden. I'll give you rest. I'll give you rest. Hebrews 4 says, there remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. For he that hath entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works as God did from his. We have a certain rest. We have a complete rest. We have a permanent rest. It is finished. There's no more work to be done. In the certain salvation that God has revealed to us, our works are over. They're over. We're not trying to do anything but rest. That's all we're trying to do is rest. Because of the certain peace and certain assurance that our certain trust has brought to us, we enjoy certain rest. Stayed upon Jehovah, hearts are fully blessed. Finding as he promised, perfect peace and rest. There's one more thing that this brother listed in his text and the thing was direction. And I thought this was a good one.

Turn over to Proverbs 3. Proverbs 3. Verse five says, trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thy own understanding. With man, that's impossible. The Lord has to enable a child of his to do that. It's great grace and mercy when he does. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thy own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him and he shall direct thy paths. It's good news. We have certain direction.

We don't always know what that direction is. A lot of times we say, you know, I just don't know what the Lord would have me to do in this moment. We don't always know what that direction is. And it's because we're not the ones directing the direction. But because of who is directing the direction, we have certain direction. And all we have to do is wait on Him to direct us in it.

I don't know what the Lord would have me to do. I don't know this. Well, just hold on. He'll show you. He'll show you, you'll walk down that path. Psalm 37 verse 23 says, the steps of a good man, and that's a man in Christ, a woman in Christ. The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord. We have certain direction.

And that verse of scripture made me think of this, all right, I'm gonna close with this. I threw a few bonus. He gave me five and I've now given you five. I'll close on a couple of bonus things here. Turn over to Psalm 37. Psalm 37 verse 23 says, The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down, for the Lord upholdeth him with his hand. I have been young and now am old, yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

We have certain provision. The Lord will provide. Isn't that what the scripture says? That's the next story in Genesis. The Lord will provide for his people spiritually. They will not be begging, Lord, I don't have any spiritual bread. I don't have Christ. They will not be begging for bread. He said, I'm the bread. The Lord will provide spiritually, but he'll also provide physically. He will provide, the Lord will provide. We may not end up with everything we want sinfully, but we will end up with everything we need.

Turn over to Psalm 23. Psalm 23. Verse five says, thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. Thou anointest my head with oil, my cup runneth over. In Matthew six, the Lord said, your heavenly father knows you need all these things. Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven in his righteousness and all these things shall be added to you. Certain provision, certain provision.

Look right here at verse four, it says, yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for thou art with me. Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Certain confidence. Certain comfort. Look at verse six, it says, surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Certain providence, a certain providence of good, a certain end, a certain perseverance. We know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life. Certainty. Certainty, that's what God's people have, certainty. And it's all because of our certain Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. To him, certainly be all the glory forever and ever. Amen.
