Who can read the words "the bread of God" in this chapter (vv. 6, 8, 17, 21, 22) and not think of our Lord Jesus Christ? Those specific words are used only seven times in Holy Scripture (Leviticus 21:6, 8, 17, 21, 22; 22:25, John 6:33). It seems obvious to me that our Lord Jesus referred to this 21st chapter of Leviticus when he said, "The bread which I give is my flesh, which I give for the life of the world." (John 6:51). — "The Bread of God is he that cometh down from heaven" (John 6:33).

The showbread the priests offered continually upon the Table of Showbread pointed to him, our Lord Jesus Christ, who is "The Bread of God."
• He is the Bread that satisfies God.
• He is the Bread God gives by which our souls are satisfied.
• He is the Bread God's servants constantly spread on the table in his house.
• Christ is our daily Bread, the Bread we must have, the Bread we must eat, the Bread we want!

subject tonight is the Bread
of God, the Bread of God. You'll find my text in Leviticus
chapter 21. Those words, the Bread of God
are found only, excuse me, only here in the Old Testament Scriptures. They are found here and once
in chapter 22. Let's look at verse 6, They shall be holy unto their
God, and not profane the name of their God. For the offerings
of the Lord made by fire, and the bread of their God they do
offer. Therefore they shall be holy.
God's command to the priesthood of Aaron. Verse eight, thou shalt
sanctify him therefore, for he offereth the bread of thy God. unto thee, for I the Lord which
sanctify you am holy." Verse 17, Speak unto Aaron, saying,
Whosoever he be of thy seed in their generations, that hath
any blemish, let him not approach to offer the bread of his God.
Verse 21, No man that hath the blemish of the seed of Aaron,
the priest, shall come nigh to offer the offerings of the Lord
made by fire, he hath a blemish. He shall not come nigh to offer
the bread of his God. Verse 22, he shall eat the bread
of his God, both of the most holy and of the holy. He can't offer the bread, he's
got a blemish, but he shall eat the bread. chapter 22, verse
25, neither from a stranger's hand shall you offer the bread
of your God of any of these, because their corruption is in
them and blemishes be in them. They shall not be accepted for
you. After that you don't find those
words the bread of God used anywhere else in the Bible Until you get
to the sixth chapter of John's gospel If you want to put a bookmark
there, we'll be there in just a little bit looking at that
But our Lord Jesus in John chapter 6 uses these very words in verse
33 he says the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven
and and giveth life unto the world. The bread on the table
of showbread in the Old Testament was for the Jews only. And the
bread of God, our Lord Jesus speaks of here, referring to
himself, is only for God's Israel, but it's for God's Israel scattered
throughout the world. He says, I am the bread of life. He that cometh to me shall never
hunger, and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. Obviously when our Savior spoke
those words in John 6, he had in his mind the table of showbread
and that which is here spoken of the table of showbread in
Leviticus chapter 21. The Lord Jesus Christ is the
bread of God. He is the bread of life to our
souls. The showbread and the priest,
or the showbread that the priest offered continually in the tabernacle
pointed to him and typified him as the bread of life, the bread
of God. Let me show you just five or
six things here concerning this bread as it's spoken of here.
First, understand this. The first thing that was seen
by anyone coming to the tabernacle by any of the priests who served
in the tabernacle was the brazen altar. The sacrifice must be
slain. The blood must be shed. The blood
had to be shed and the sacrifice slain and accepted of God before
anyone could come to God and worship Him. Our God, the consuming
fire, must consume the sin-atoning sacrifice upon the brazen altar
before the priest can come in and do business in the holy place
before the holy Lord God. Now this is what that means.
Any religion without blood is just a show and pretense. Any
religion without blood sacrifice is meaningless. All its beauty,
pomp, and pageantry is altogether meaningless at best and blasphemy
and idolatry at worst. I don't mean by that any religion
that doesn't pretend to have blood and pretend to have a sacrifice.
I'm talking about any religion that sets before you a way to
God without fully accomplished redemption by the sacrifice of
Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer, is meaningless at best and utter
hypocrisy and idolatry at worst. The priest could not even come
to the table and see the table of showbread until first the
sacrifice was complete. The sacrifice speaks of our Lord
Jesus Christ. And we're talking about Christ
as our sacrifice. We're not talking about a possibility
of redemption. We're not talking about a possibility
of salvation. We're not talking about a possibility
of grace. We're talking about a sacrifice by whose blood God's
justice has been satisfied, the way has been opened, and God's
people shall be brought to him. So we cannot feed upon Christ
the bread of God until he's received as the sacrificial lamb of God
who shed his blood in our stead and made atonement for us before
the Holy Lord God. In the worship of God, the sacrifice
is everything. In the approach of our souls
to God, the sacrifice is everything. In our acceptance with God, the
sacrifice is everything. In our peace and assurance, the
sacrifice is everything. In the matter of faith, the sacrifice
is everything. Christ is everything with regard
to salvation and our acceptance with God in everlasting life.
Here's the second thing. as the high priest passed by
the brazen altar going to the holy place. The golden candlestick
would be on his left side. On his right would be this table
of showbread, this golden table of showbread. It was made of
Shittam wood, made of Shittam wood. I recall years ago, I've
just got to tell you this, because I want to. I happened to be listening
to Mr. Swaggart one morning, one of
his religious charades. Now remember, this is a fellow
who was, at the time, paying prostitutes for his pleasures,
and he was very careful. He was talking about the shit
of wood by which these furnishings were made, and he wouldn't say
it. lest you might think he was saying something bad. He called
it Shittim Wood, and Shittim Wood, but he wouldn't call it
what it was because he wanted you to think he was a good, holy
man. Well, this is called Shittim Wood. It's an uncorrupting wood. An uncorrupting wood overlaid
with pure gold, portraying for us both the glorious divinity
of our Savior and His eternal Godhead, the gold of His being. and his humanity being himself
portrayed in that wood overlaid with gold. But more than that,
portraying his perpetual efficacy as our Redeemer and our Savior
in his Godhood, in his manhood, accepted of God, unchanging in
his character forever. So that whatever Christ was when
he came into this world, in our nature, whatever he was when
he walked on this earth in our nature, whatever he was when
he died in our stead in our nature, whatever he was when he arose
in our nature and took his seat on the throne of God, that's
what he is forever, God in our flesh. Our acceptance, our righteousness,
our sanctification, our all. 12 loaves of bread were placed
on the table. Six rows, or six in a row, frankincense
was placed on the cakes of bread because the showbread was an
offering made by fire to the Lord. And the frankincense gives
the sweet aroma of our Savior's intercession. The table and the
bread were considered one. The word showbread, the word
that's translated showbread, might be translated Bread of
the presence, because of the showbread. Always on the table
of showbread. God testifies his presence with
us. Always present with his people. Always present in the house of
God. Always present with us in the
person of our Redeemer. And as we come to God by Christ
Jesus. we feast upon the bread of life,
the bread of God Christ Jesus. We always live present with God. Always present with God. God with us and we with God perpetually
in the Lord Jesus Christ. The bread might be called the
continual bread. In fact, that's how it's called
in Numbers chapter four. God is continually present with
us and we are continually present with him. And the words might
be translated bread of faces. The ancients spoke of the bread
this way, bread of faces, because in Jesus Christ crucified, represented
in this bread, we see God in all his glory, shining in the
face of Jesus Christ our Lord. And as we eat the bread, as we
believe on the Son of God, We see ourselves as we really are. The crucified Christ portrays
man in his nature. We are that which God punished
in his Son. We are that which evoke the fury
of God's wrath toward His Son. Sin, sin. Here I am, I eat this
bread, Christ Jesus the Lord trusting Him as my only Savior,
my only acceptance with God. I see the glory of God in forgiving
sin. And I acknowledge and confess
what I am, nothing but sin, seeing myself as well. Here's the third
thing. Now I want you to turn over to
John chapter six for this. John chapter six. Our Lord Jesus
Christ is the bread of God. This is what he tells us here
in the sixth chapter of John. The show bread consisted of 12
loaves made without leaven. Unleavened bread, like we use
at the Lord's table. Unleavened bread signifying the
purity. holiness, the righteousness of
our Redeemer. He who came into this world as
our Savior is the seed of woman without the corruption of a fallen
parent, without the corruption of Adam in him, without any depravity,
without any sin, without any nature of sin, without any inclination
to sin. He walked on this earth all the
days of his life in spotless purity. fulfilling all righteousness
as our Redeemer and substitute. He is altogether the Holy One,
the Holy One. And He is made of God unto us,
holiness, sanctification, and righteousness, and redemption. The showbread is not only made
of unleavened bread, but the showbread was placed on the golden
table every Sabbath in the holy place. Every Saturday the priest
would come in and set 12 loaves of bread in two rows, six to
a row on that table in the holy place on the Sabbath day. because Christ is our Sabbath
rest. He is the rest of God. He is that one who gives us rest,
the one in whom we find rest, and the rest is enjoyed only
by eating the bread, the holy bread, the bread of God in the
holy place. The number of loaves, I repeat,
was 12. representing the whole 12 tribes of Israel. In the scriptures, this number
representing the people of God refers to the 12 tribes of Israel,
spoken of as the 144,000 in Revelation chapter 7. A definite number,
speaking of an indefinite number, 144,000, those 12 loaves of bread,
those 12 tribes of Israel speak of the whole body of God's elect. So here is bread, bread offered
to God for the children of Israel. and bread given by God to the
children of Israel for the priest to feast upon. It's set here
every Sabbath day on the table of show bread for them to feast
on. There is in our Father's house
bread enough and to spare, but this one who is the bread of
God is bread for only God's elect. All of God's elect feed upon
him, and none but God's elect ever will. Here's the fourth
thing. The making of the bread is not
easy work. Now, I'm not a cook, I'm not
a baker. If I had to make bread, I would
get me a can of whopping biscuits, pop them open, put them in the
oven. But I have watched my wife make bread. She used to make
bread real regular. And she quit, not because she
got lazy, because I'm not supposed to have so much bread. But as
I told you the other day, I like my bread. And the bread requires
that someone take the grain and have it ground. And then that
grain is sifted, the flour, and mixed together by determined
hands with a plan and purpose. And that's put into loaves, molded
by those hands, and baked in an oven. So our Lord Jesus, by
the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, was brought into this
world in the body of a man. And he was molded in the womb
of the Virgin by God the Holy Spirit, that holy thing which
would bring redemption to his people. That holy thing who could
obey God in the stead of his people. That holy thing that
could suffer and satisfy the wrath of God for his people.
Molded, formed in the Virgin's womb by the miraculous conception
of God the Holy Ghost. And then, in Gethsemane's garden, he was sifted and ground. Oh, the sifting and the grinding
of him who anticipated being made sin for us and broke into
a sweat of blood as he cried three times, Father, if it be
possible, let this cup pass from me. Nevertheless, not as I will,
but thy will be done. And then at Calvary, the bread was baked in the oven
of God's furious anger and wrath. When he who is God our Savior,
God in our nature, was made sin for us, and suffered all the
horror of God's wrath as our substitute. Turn to Lamentations. Hold your hands in John 6. Turn
to Lamentations chapter 3. This can't be stated often enough,
emphatically enough, passionately enough. Of his suffering so intense,
angels have no perfect sense. Hear the Savior as he speaks
from Calvary's cursed tree. Lamentations chapter one, verse
12. Is it nothing to you, all ye
that pass by? Behold and see if there be any
sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me. wherewith the
Lord hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger. From
above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against
them. He hath spread a net for my feet.
He hath turned me back. He hath made me desolate and
faint all the day. The yoke of my transgressions
is bound by his hand. They are wreathed and come up
upon my neck. He hath made my strength to fall. The Lord hath delivered me into
their hands from whom I am not able to rise up. The Lord Jesus, the bread of God, first offered
himself to God as the bread of God and the bread of life. And
then the sinner, when called by his grace, offers God this
bread. The only way you can come to
God is to bring this offering. And when you bring the bread
of God to God. believing on Him, eating this
bread, feasting upon His blood, His righteousness, you bring
God, His Son, then God gives His Son to you to feed upon this
bread, the bread of God, the bread of life. Bring God's bread
to God, and God will give the bread of God to you to eat forever. Here's the fifth thing, here
in John chapter six. This we must do. We must eat
this bread. The bread of God must be eaten
by me, or it can never be the bread of life to me. The bread
of God must be eaten by you, or it will not benefit you at
all. We believe in absolute sovereignty, the scriptures teach it. We recognize
that every man, every woman chosen of God will be saved, none accepted. Every sinner for whom Christ
died will be saved, none accepted. All who are called by the Spirit
of God, born again by Him, have life eternal from God. And we
understand and believe just as fully, just as completely that
the only way any sinner ever benefits from God's grace and
salvation is if he believes on the Son of God. You have no reason
to even faintly suspect that God loves you, or God will receive
you, or God will accept you, or God will bless you, except
you feed upon Christ the bread of life. Faith is as necessary
to everlasting salvation as election, redemption, and effectual calling. He that believeth on the Son
of God hath everlasting life. If you do not believe on the
Son of God, the wrath of God abides on you. Does that mean
that somehow by believing on Christ we satisfy God's wrath
and justice and turn it away from us? Of course not. It does
mean this, you cannot perceive You cannot understand. You cannot
have any real sense of the fact that God is gracious and Christ
died for you and God's wrath is turned away from you except
you believe on the Son of God. Believe in Him. We feast upon
the bread of life. Now this is what we read here
in John chapter 6. Let's begin at verse 31. I want to read a
little bit of this passage of scripture. The Jews are squabbling
with our Savior. Religious folks always do. And
religious people can talk more nonsense than politicians. John
6, verse 31. Our fathers did eat manna in
the desert. As it is written, he gave them
bread from heaven to eat. Our fathers, our fathers, our
fathers. Then Jesus said to them, Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from
heaven, but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
That was just manner. That was just manner. It was
little, and it was round, and it came from heaven, and had
to be gathered in the morning. That was just manner. It portrayed
me, but that wasn't true bread. For the bread of God is he which
cometh down from heaven and giveth life to the world. Jesus Christ
is that one who came down from heaven and that one who gives
life to sinners scattered throughout the world. Then said they unto
him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. Give us this bread so
we won't have to be hungry anymore. Kind of like the woman at the
well in John four. Give me that water, I want that. I don't have
to come back here and go through this anymore. Jesus said unto
them, I am the bread of life. He that cometh to me shall never
hunger. And he that believeth on me shall
never thirst. But I said unto you that ye also
have seen me and believe not. that the Father giveth me." I
love those, the way our Lord put things, present tense. All
that the Father giveth me. He gives sinners to His Son. I pray every day as God brings
us here to do the work that's put in our hands. Every time
we come here to worship God, preach the gospel, getting ready
to go to England and Ireland, getting ready to go back to California.
Oh God, will you by your Spirit, through your Word, give sinners
to the Son. He giveth me. All that the Father
giveth me shall come to me. And him that cometh to me I will
in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven not
to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And
this is the will of God. This is the will of God. Folks,
I wish I could know God's will. I can know it about some things.
This is the Father's will, which has sent me, that of all which
he hath given me, past tense, all that he gave me before the
world was, I should lose nothing. but should raise it up again
at the last day. Those whom He giveth me in time
are those whom He gave to me in eternity, and I will raise
them up. Not one shall perish. Verse 40,
And this is the will of Him that sent me, that everyone which
seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting
life, and I will raise him up at the last day. Now you get
the idea. He's talking about the same people.
Those the Father gave me, he gives me. And those he gives
me have the Son revealed in them, revealed to them by the power
and grace of God. And those to whom the Son is
revealed, given to me of my Father, they come to me. That's called
faith in Christ. And he that cometh to me, he
that cometh to me, I will in no wise cast out, not for any
reason ever. and this is the Father's will.
I'll raise him up at the last day. All right, verse 41. The
Jews murmured at him, because he said, I am the bread which
came down from heaven. And they said, is not this Jesus,
the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it
then that he saith, I came down from heaven? Jesus therefore
answered and said to them, murmur not among yourselves, I told
you you didn't believe on me, but no man can come to me. It's not in your power. It's
not up to you. I'm not waiting on you to do
something. No man can come to me. He doesn't have the ability.
It doesn't lie within the realm of possibility that a lost, dead
sinner can come to me, except the Father which has sent me
draw him. and I will raise him up at the
last day. If the Father draws you, you're coming. And he that
cometh to me, I'll in no wise cast out, but you can't come
on your own. It is written in the prophets, and they shall
be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath
heard and hath learned of the Father cometh unto me. All of God's people are taught
and well taught. Not that any man hath seen the
Father, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father. Verily,
verily I say unto you, he that believeth on me hath everlasting
life. He that believeth on me hath
everlasting life. Now listen to me. You, my brothers
and sisters, who so much struggle with so many things, Would you, God, I could help
you in this matter. Folks, always struggle. I don't know whether
I'm saved or not. He that believeth on me hath,
hath, hath, hath everlasting life. Do you believe on Christ?
Well, I don't know if I have repeated it. Do you believe on
Christ? I don't know if I feel my sin. Do you believe on Christ?
I don't know whether I believe strongly or not. Do you believe
on the Son of God? He that believeth on me hath
everlasting life. Honestly, I don't much feel like
it most of the time. I don't much feel close to God
most of the time. I don't much feel his presence
most of the time. I don't much know anything about
prayer. I just don't. I just don't. I don't know much about holiness
and godliness and faithfulness and righteousness. I don't know
much about faith. Jimmy, I try to be honest with
you. I don't know much about those things. I got a lot here,
but I don't know much about those things in the day-by-day experience
of life. Let me tell you something. I believe on the Son of God. That's all the hope I've got.
That's all I've got. Not my knowledge, not my feeling,
not my experience. I believe on the Son of God. I believe that Jesus is the Christ. And the Son of God says, he that
believeth on me hath everlasting life. I dare believe him. When I feel as dead as a petrified
tree, as dead as a rock in the field, as dead as a cold piece
of steel, I believe on the Son of God. And he says, I have everlasting
life. I am that bread, he says, that
bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in
the wilderness and are dead. They went out and ate miracle
food every day. Can you imagine that? These Jews
went out for 40 years. I'm talking about generation
after generation for 40 years. For 40 years and every day They
gathered up miracle food spread on the ground from heaven. God
gave them clothes that didn't wear out and shoes that didn't
wear out for 40 years. They experienced miracles every
day for 40 years and never believed God. Never believed God. Verse 50, this is the bread which
cometh down from heaven that a man may eat thereof and not
die. You can eat miracles and die.
You can eat religion and die. You can eat experience and die,
but you can't believe on the Son of God and die. I am the
living bread which came down from heaven. If any man eat of
this bread, he shall live forever. And the bread that I will give
is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world, my
flesh. I will give my life. I will give my life for the life
of my people, wherever they are in all the world. And the Jews
therefore strove among themselves saying. Now listen to this. I
told you religious folks think and talk crazier than politicians.
How can this man give us his flesh to eat? How can this man
give us his flesh to eat? They take his words literally
knowing they can't possibly be intended for that purpose. Knowing
full well he had no thought of them literally feeding on his
flesh like a bunch of cannibals. No, but they said, how can this
man give us his flesh to eat? Jesus saith unto them, verily,
verily I say unto you, except you eat the flesh of the Son
of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. I love that. He didn't back off a bit, Lindsay.
He didn't do anything to answer their cavils. He didn't say one
word to answer their quibbles. He just gave them something else
to fuss about. He said, unless you eat my flesh and drink my
blood, just exactly as I said to you, you'll have no life and
you'll die. He's talking about faith. Take
my obedience. Take my sacrifice. Believe me. Eat my flesh and drink my blood
and you'll live, otherwise you'll perish. Whoso eateth my flesh
and drinketh my blood hath eternal life. And I'll raise him up at
the last day. Look at verse 55. For my flesh
is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth
my flesh and drinketh my blood dwelleth in me and I in him.
As the living Father hath sent me, And I live by the Father,
so he that eateth me shall live by me. We eat bread and live
by it. We eat bread and live by it.
We believe on Christ and live by him. This is the bread which
came down from heaven, not as your fathers did eat manna and
are dead. He that eateth this bread shall
live forever. I've eaten this bread. I eat this bread every day, all
day, all the time. Let me tell you what I know from
experience. This is suitable bread, righteousness and atonement. satisfaction and perfection. That's what God requires from
me and that's what Christ is for me. With his spotless garments
on, I am as holy as God's own Son. In Christ, I am right now
meet to be partaker of the inheritance of the saints in life. This bread
bread. Eat this bread and you have eternal
life. Eat this bread and you shall
never die. This bread is satisfying bread. It satisfies God. Nothing else
will. Only the blood and righteousness
of His Son satisfies God. And this is the only thing that
will satisfy the soul of a man. The only thing that will satisfy
the soul of a man. Shelby and I were talking last
night at supper. We raise our children, try to
train them, what we want to make of them, faithful, dependable
citizens, faithful husband, faithful wives. That's what we want for
them. We want them to do the best they can, to be the best
they can be at whatever God puts in their hands to do. I urge
you, men and women, whatever God puts in your hand to do,
be the best you can be at it. Nothing less will do, nothing
less will suffice. But having said all that, People
seek after wealth and property and more wealth and more property. And I said to Shelby last night,
I said, would to God I could learn and I could communicate
to everybody I influence. There are some things far more
needful. and satisfying than money, property,
and wealth. And then I rephrased it. Almost anything is more satisfying. Almost anything is more satisfying. This is the one thing. You eat
this bread, you'll never hunger again. you'll never hunger again. Drink
his blood, you'll never thirst again, never, never. People's doctrine changes a lot.
Brother Todd and I called me today and we talked about A fellow
who's over the years, his doctrine has changed a great deal. I called
the name of a well-known preacher all over the world, but when
I first became aware of him, he was an Arian. He didn't believe
in the eternal trinity. And then he started running with
folks and decided he did believe in the trinity. And then he started
running with some Reformed Baptist folks and decided he believed
in doctrines of grace, and just keeps changing his doctrine.
My doctrine hasn't changed since I was 17 years old. It's gotten
stronger, it's gotten firmer. My document changed since I was
17 years old. Let me tell you why. I'm not looking for anything. I'm just not looking for anything.
What if you learn something? I'm not going to. Won't you consider
it? Nope, nope. Why on this earth
would I go gravel in a pit of rocks when I got fresh hot bread
coming out of the oven? Doesn't make any sense. This
is satisfying bread. I've never wanted anything else. Nothing. This bread is sufficient. And I'm telling you, it's the
sweetest bread I ever ate. Back some years ago, the first
time I went to Kansas City to preach, I was preaching for Brother
Bob Gnote. And I made the statement somewhere. I said, I love sweet bread. Well,
I forgot I was in Kansas. Those poor folks didn't know
what sweet bread was. He went to every bakery he could find
and couldn't find anybody who knew anything about sweet bread.
And I forgot what he bought me, but it wasn't sweet bread. I
said, Bob, what I mean by that is pumpkin bread, apple bread,
cinnamon bread, banana bread, Any kind of sweet bread, zucchini
bread. Oh, I love sweet bread, sweet
bread. Before we leave home most of
the time, Shelby has a pack of her zucchini bread in the freezer
wrapped up and we'll take it with us. That's what we'll have
for breakfast in the morning room. Beats anything you get at the
motel breakfast bar. But I love it, I just love it. Jesus Christ in crucify is the
sweetest bread ever put to the palate of this man. Sweet bread
for needy sinners. And one more thing. The show
bread was always on the table in the tabernacle. So it is in
the house of God. The show bread is always on the
table. Always there for sinners for
their needs. But I want you to turn back to
Leviticus 21. Let me show you one more thing just for a minute. Priests with blemishes are God's
priests still. Some of them have bald heads
and some of them have crooked backs. Some of them are club-footed
and some of them have twisted limbs. The fact is we all have
our blemishes in this body of flesh. Blemishes that Satan is
quick to point out. And blemishes we recognize plainly
in ourselves. But blemished priests are still
a part of God's holy priesthood. Only the unblemished, perfect,
great high priest could bring the bread to God and offer sacrifice
acceptable to God. but all the blemished priest,
that's Mark Henson and Don Fortner, get to eat the bread. Look what
it says in verse 21. No man that hath the blemish
of the seed of Aaron the priest shall come nigh to offer the
offerings of the Lord made by fire. He hath the blemish. He
shall not come nigh to offer the bread of his God. Now look
at verse 22. He shall eat the bread of his
God. both of the most holy and of the holy. I want to read,
but he shall eat the bread of his God. But God didn't put that
there. He said, the blemished man, he
cannot, he cannot offer the bread. That's the work of the high priest.
He can't eat it. He can't eat it. You see, the
bread is particularly distinct there for God's priest, the blemished
priest. like you and me, his fallen sons
and daughters while we live in this world, in this body of flesh,
halting and laying and blind in one eye and deaf in one ear
with scars, club-footed, superfluous things, scurvied and scabbed,
dirty things we are, but he says you're mine. and the bread is
yours. Eat the bread of God and live
forever. Poor starving souls trying to
feed on husk that cannot meet your need. Behold the gospel
table spread, Christ Jesus is the living bread. This bread
which money cannot buy will life impart and life supply. It fills
the hungry with delight. and never spoils your appetite. This bread of life comes down
from heaven. By sovereign grace, it's freely
given. This food and medicine to saints, revise the weary and
the faint. This bread, the carnal cannot
taste, but heaven born souls upon it feast. Feasting we feast,
still more, to eat and live forevermore. Amen.
