Luke chapter 8. Luke chapter 8. Luke chapter 8 beginning in verse
40. It came to pass that when Jesus
was returned, the people gladly received Him for They were all
waiting for him. And behold, there came a man
named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell
down at Jesus' feet and besought him that he would come into his
house. For he had one only daughter,
about 12 years of age, and she lay dying. But as he went, the
people thronged him. And a woman having an issue of
blood 12 years, which had spent all her living upon physicians,
neither could be healed of any, came behind him and touched the
border of his garment. And immediately her issue of
blood stanched. And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied
Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitudes
who thronged thee impressed thee, and sayest thou, Who touched
me? And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me, for I perceive
that virtue is gone out of me. And when the woman saw that she
was not hid, she came trembling and falling down before him.
She declared unto him before all the people for what cause
she touched him, and now she was healed immediately. And he
said unto her, daughter, be of good comfort. Thy faith hath
made thee whole. Go in peace. All yet spake, there
cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying
unto him, thy daughter is dead. Trouble not the master. When
Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, fear not. Believe only,
and she shall be made whole. When he came into the house,
he suffered no man to go in, save Peter and James and John
and the father and the mother of the maiden, and all wept and
bewailed her But he said, weep not, she is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn,
knowing that she was dead. And he put them all out, and
took her by the hand, and called, saying, maid, arise. And her
spirit came again, and she arose straightway, and he commanded
to give her meat. And her parents were astonished,
but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done.
Let's pray together. Lord, we come unto you in the
name of your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and we thank you for
bringing us here today. And Lord, we ask that you would
be pleased to reveal yourself to us today, that you would cause
us to see our Savior exalted and lifted up. We might be given
eyes to read your word, ears to hear your gospel preached.
Lord, please be with us and our families. Watch over us and protect
us. and provide all that we need
in this world. We're thankful that you know
what we need at all times. We ask that you'd be with our
pastor and be with our brothers that are down in Florida, that
you would bless the preaching of the gospel there, that you
bring them home safely to us. It's in Christ's name and for
Christ's sake that we pray, amen. Beginning in verse 40, it says,
and it came to pass that when Jesus was returned The people
gladly received him for they were all waiting for him. Jesus
just saved the demoniac in the country of the Gadarenes. That
was the man that was possessed with devils and was chained and
was cutting himself and hurting himself and others. And the Lord
came and took those demons out of this man and he put them into
the swine and the swine ran into the midst of the sea. And it
says that when those citizens in that country came and saw
that man, after the Lord had done this, that he was at Jesus'
feet and that he was in his right mind. And after that, the Lord
comes back to these people. Verse 41, and behold, there came
a man named Jairus. And he was a ruler of the synagogue,
and he fell down at Jesus' feet and besought him that he would
come into his house. For he had one only daughter,
about 12 years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went,
the people thronged him. And when it says they were all
waiting for him that word means to look to him so don't think
of passive waiting but an active looking to the Lord and Jairus
has certainly been actively looking to the Lord because he has a
sick daughter who's 12 who's on her deathbed. I want to call out in verse 41
how he approached the Lord it says he fell at Jesus feet. Now just in the book of Luke
alone I read six times where that said where it said that
somebody fell down at the feet of Jesus and every time when
I read that story the Lord gave that person what they needed
whether it was healing or whatever it was he provided exactly what
they needed. That's how we come. approach
Jesus and ask for mercy, and that's where we'll stay after
we're given mercy. Look in verse 35 of the same
chapter. This is after the Lord healed the demoniac. Then they
went out to see what was done and came to Jesus and found the
man of whom the devils were departed sitting at the feet of Jesus
clothed and in his right mind and they were all afraid. The
Lord's people don't leave that spot of Jesus feet, we don't
graduate, there's nothing else to move on to, that's where we
will stay, that's where we come and beg for mercy and once he's
given mercy we stay there and we continue to beg for mercy
and we continue to sit at his feet. Verse 42. For he had one
only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying.
But as he went, the people thronged him. Now Jesus agrees to go to
his house, but it says as they go, the people thronged him.
They surround the Lord. Again, these people have been
actively looking for him. They've been patiently waiting
for him, and they thronged him. Verse 43, And a woman having
an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living
upon physicians, neither could be healed of any. Now this issue
of blood you can read about it in Deuteronomy, it is a state
of uncleanness, it's similar to how leprosy is preached in
the scriptures. This woman cannot congregate,
she cannot worship, she cannot go into people's homes, she cannot
touch people, she is in an unclean state and she has been this way
for 12 years and this represents the unclean sickness of sin and
the maids issues as well, the sickness of sin. Verse 44. She, the woman with the issue
of blood, came behind him and touched the border of his garment
and immediately her issue of blood stanched. Now I want to
read you an excerpt out of Mark's account, Mark 5 verse 28. For
she said, if I may touch but his clothes, I shall be made
whole. She knew something of the Lord's
ability because she said, if I can just get to him and touch
him, I'll be made whole. And she was right. She was touched.
She touched him and it says immediately her issue of blood stanch. No
process to it, no steps. She touched him and her issue
was completely gone. Verse 45, and Jesus said, who
touched me? When all denied, Peter and they
that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee impress
thee, and sayest thou who touch me? And Jesus said, Somebody
hath touched me. For I perceive that virtue, that
word means power, has gone out of me. What Peter's saying is
they're all around. That word throng, a lot of times
in the scriptures, it means to choke, so tight, to choke, surrounded. These people, there's hundreds,
maybe thousands surrounded. There's tons of people touching
the Lord. And Peter's saying, how could you call this touch?
What do you mean? There's tons of people touching
you. Well, God called this touch out. and there's good reason
for it. He said that virtue has gone out of him. Why did he call
this touch out? Why did virtue leave the Lord?
Two reasons. First of all, there was a need
behind this touch. Virtue went out of the Lord because
there was need of virtue, there was need of power, there was
need of healing. And God recognized that and he's
going to recognize that anytime somebody reaches out to him that
has genuine need, he will receive that and he will call that out.
Turn to Matthew 9. Matthew 9, verse 12. Matthew 9, verse 12. But when Jesus heard that, He
said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but
they that are sick. Now, first of all, these are
the Lord's words. I'm not saying this God said,
If you're whole you don't need a physician but if you're sick.
And who is the physician? The physician is the one that
does the healing and that's something we see very clearly in this story
is who heals? Jesus Christ heals. So when it
says they that be whole need not a physician it can easily
read they that hold need not Christ but those that are sick.
They need a savior but those that are sick. And this is where
this woman found herself in need of a physician, and anytime there's
a need, God is gonna meet that need. It was a touch of need,
and it was a touch of faith. Look back in our text, Luke 8,
verse 48. Verse 48, and he said unto her,
Daughter, be of good comfort, thy faith hath made thee whole. Go in peace. Now her faith is
shown in her saying that if I can just get to Christ, She had faith
that he was able, faith is not so much that we believe we're
saved but that he is able to save us, that he has the ability,
that he can if he will. This woman knew that if she could
get to him he could make her whole, he had the ability, nobody
else has that ability but he does and she had faith in that.
Verse 47. And when the woman saw that she
was not hid, she came trembling and falling down before him,
she declared unto him before all the people for what cause
she had touched him and how she was healed immediately. Now,
she's just had a miracle done for her. I mean, she's just been
cleansed of this issue that she's had for 12 years. But you notice
how it says she comes, she comes trembling. And again, it says
falling down before him again. fell down before him before she
was saved, and after her issue was gone, still at his feet.
She came trembling. Turn to Psalm chapter 2 for a
second. Psalm chapter 2, verse 11. The psalmist here says, serve
the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling. No doubt this
woman was rejoicing, no doubt she was thankful, still trembling
though. And that trembling and fear, that never leaves. There
is a tremble and a fear and an overall reverence for who he
is after he has done something for us. Fear, this woman had
fear that if she looked elsewhere, her issue would come right back.
fear to ever take her eyes off of the Lord or put her faith
in anything other than Christ and that's the fear that we have
and it speaks to an overall reverence for his power for his ability
for his sovereignty. reverence for the mystery that
he would be able to save somebody like this woman that he would
be willing to. But he is. So it's over our head, but we still
believe it, we rejoice in it, we're thankful for it, and we
have a proper reverence for that. Luke 8, verse 48. Verse 48, and he said unto her,
daughter be of good comfort, thy faith hath made thee whole,
go in peace. The Lord gives this woman such
an endearing term, daughter, one of his children. Now turn
over to 2 Corinthians 6. 2 Corinthians 6. I wanna look at what it means to
be a daughter, to be a son. 2 Corinthians 6, verse 16. And what agreement hath the temple
of God with idols? For ye are the temple of the
living God, as God hath said, and this is speaking of his children,
I will dwell in them, and walk in them, and I will be their
God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among
them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean
thing, and I will receive you, and will be a father unto you,
and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord. Now, first of
all, when we see this woman is called daughter, if you're one
of the Lord's people, if you're one of his children, that means
that this is our sister in Christ that we just read about the Lord
saving, and even today, we rejoice in that, we're thankful for that,
even though we didn't know this woman personally, but when we
read of one of our brothers and sisters being saved in scripture,
that is so encouraging, that is so just, man, I just love
that. More importantly than that, though,
She now gets to call him father. She has that ability to come
into his presence and call him father. And why does she have
that ability? Why do we have that ability?
Because he first called us daughter, first called us son. That's the
saving power of the Lord. And action by him calling us
daughter and son leads to us being able to come into his presence
and call him father. Turn back to Luke chapter 8,
verse 49. Luke 8, verse 49. While yet spake
there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house saying
to him, thy daughter is dead. Trouble not the master. Now God's
just completed a marvelous work of grace for this woman, a miracle.
But I tell you who didn't find it marvelous was Jairus. Because
Jairus, they were on their way to his house to save the maid.
And then they stop to handle the woman with the issue of blood,
however long that took. And then somebody comes from
his house and says, my daughter's dead, trouble not the master.
Verse 50, this is how the Lord responds to this news. But when
Jesus heard it, he answered him saying, fear not, believe only,
and she shall be made whole. In his worst moment of his entire
life, God tells him, fear not, believe only. That was his command. The whole gospel's in those four
words, fear not and believe only. Let's start with fear not. It's
the most common phrase in the entire Bible. And there's no
doubt Jairus has fear. You got kids, that's your worst
fear. That's your worst nightmare is
losing them. Turn to Isaiah 43 though. Isaiah 43. Isaiah 43, verse 1. Isaiah 43, verse 1. But now thus
saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee,
O Israel, fear not, for I have redeemed thee. I have called
thee by thy name. Thou art mine. Look in verse
5. Fear not, for I am with thee. Look in the next chapter, chapter
44, verse 2. The point I want to make in reading
that is when God says fear not, those are not empty words. There
is reason to fear not. He has already done things that
make us to where we can fear not. If I tell you to fear not, if
you're going through something and I tell you to fear not, I
don't really have the right to tell you that. Maybe you should
fear, I don't really know. But God said fear not, and he
gives reasons. I have redeemed thee, I am with
thee, I will help thee, thou art mine. And it's the most common
phrase in the Bible, there are so many reasons why the Lord's
people should fear not. If you fear, look in the word.
The reasons to fear not are in the word. And he tells Jairus
here, Fear not, and there's reasons for Jairus to fear not. He says,
fear not, believe only. Now, if you get who we're believing
in wrong, it's all wrong. I want to show you who he's to
believe in. Turn over to Acts 16. Acts 16, verse 27. This is when Paul and Silas were
thrown into prison for preaching the gospel. And the Lord sent
an earthquake, and it loosened the shackles of the prisoners,
removed the doors from the prison. This is the story about the keeper
of the prison being saved. Acts 16 verse 27, and the keeper
of the prison awakening out of his sleep, and seeing the prison
doors open, he drew out his sword and would have killed himself,
supposing that the prisoners had been fled. But Paul cried
with a loud voice saying, do thyself no harm, for we are all
here. Then he called for a light and
sprang in and came trembling, and fell down before Paul and
Silas, and brought them out and said, sirs, what must I do to
be saved? And they said, believe on the
Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved in thy house. And that man was baptized later
that night. And that's who's telling him
to believe in, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. He's telling
Jairus, believe me. Believe only, and your daughter
will be made whole. And when God says only, he means
only. Belief is always done only. So
what he's telling Jairus is don't think, don't speak, don't do,
don't react to this news, believe only. And that goes for us too. We don't need to speak, we don't
need to think, we don't need to do anything. It's done. This is a finished work. This girl being saved, it was
as good as done. The Lord preordained that since
before time began. Jairus was just catching up to
find out what the Lord's will was at this time. And he says,
believe only. Turn back to Luke, chapter 8,
verse 51. Luke 8, verse 51. When he came
into the house, he suffered no man to go in. save Peter and
James and John and the father and the mother of the maiden,
and all wept and bewailed her. But he said, Weep not, she is
not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn,
knowing that she was dead. From the other accounts I read,
this was not talking about Jay Iriser's wife, this people who
were laughing. They were actually in the house
when you read Mark's account, they were in the house when God
saved the maid. And God told him, fear not, believe
only, and she shall be made whole. And she was made whole. That
means that Jairus believed. Verse 54, and he put them all
out and took her by the hand and called, saying, maid, arise. And her spirit came again, and
she arose straightway, and he commanded to give her meat. And
her parents were astonished. But he charged them that they
should tell no man what was done. Now her spirit had left. She
was dead. And God overcame it. And it said
her spirit came again and she arose straightway. Now this was
especially encouraging to me when I think about our loved
ones that don't know the Lord and that are currently dead.
You know, the Lord's people do have life in Christ. We've been
given a new heart, but not everybody has that. And we have loved ones
that are dead. And we might think they're a
lost cause, they're dead but God might say no they're not
dead, they're sleeping. Continue to pray for those that
are lost and continue to pray for your brethren's loved ones
that are lost because we don't know who the Lord's people are. And we might think, well, they
haven't been to church in a long time. They used to come and they're
not here. They might have never shown an interest in the gospel.
We might think that. God might say, no, they're not
dead. They're just sleeping and he's
going to call those people one day. It's a great encouragement.
It gives us hope that the Lord might one day do for others what
he's graciously done for us. Now, what is the gospel of this
one story? This is one story, not three
different, you know, there's three people in this story, but
it's all one story. What's the theme? What's the
gospel of it? Same gospel that our pastor preached
out of Luke 9 a few weeks ago, need, need, genuine need of the
Lord. And in all three of these people,
you see a need and you see the need met. Let's start with Jairus. Jairus' need is unique because
he was brought through the need of another. He wasn't sick. The woman with the issue of blood
was sick the maid is dead. She's obviously sick. Jairus
wasn't sick. There's a few times in scripture
where that happens the Lord brings somebody to Christ through the
need or the death of a loved one and that's what happens here.
Now we see something Jairus saw something that we all need to
understand. as having loved one and as having
children. I'll use children for an example.
We can raise our kids great. We could be the perfect parents.
We could do everything right by the book. They could grow
up to be great people. We could do a great job as parents. We don't, or I don't, but we
are never going to take sin off our children though. That's the
Lord's doing, that's his responsibility to do to take sin off our children
if he will. Jairus saw that, he saw that
need and you know what that need did? It increased his need and
he came to the Lord and the Lord saved him this day over this,
he revealed himself to him over this. And if you see your loved
one's need of Christ it will increase your need, it just will. And I hope we'll see that we
have need of the Lord to do not just for us but for our loved
ones because it's obvious that blessed Jairus greatly and the
Lord used those means this day to reveal himself to this man.
Next you have the woman with the issue of blood. Let me read
another excerpt out of Mark's account, Mark 5 verse 25, 12
years is an awful long time to be sick, that's a pretty long
term sickness. I'll tell you this about the sickness of sin,
we've all had that a lot longer than 12 years. David said in the Psalms, I was
shapen in iniquity and in sin did my mother conceive me born
into the sickness of sin. There's always long term sickness
where there's need and you don't see that until the Lord's already
done something for you and shown you that but it's a long term
sickness and there's nowhere else to turn, there is no plan
B with a need. There is, if you just want Christ,
that means you have a plan B, you have something to go back
on. This woman was growing worse. She'd spent everything on physicians.
She tried man-made remedies for this. She was nothing bettered,
but rather grew worse. Genuine need always is the last,
there's nothing else to go to. You have no other option, and
if he doesn't save you, you're just not saved. But when you're
brought to that point, that already means the Lord has saved you.
He's already done something for you. And that's what he did for
this woman. Again, she said, if I can just
get to him and touch his garment, the Lord already knew she was
going to do that. He already knew he was going to save her
that day. Then you have the maid. I specifically want to talk about
the maid because her need is unique. in the sense that Jairus
and the woman with the issue of blood they came to Christ,
Jairus came and fell down at Jesus feet, the maid reached
out and touched his clothes. The maid though was unable, she
couldn't come to the Lord, she had to have a representative
go to the Lord and that's what our need is, is the need of a
representative, a need of somebody to take our sins to Christ, to
bear our sins before Christ. Let me read you John 14 verse
6, Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth and the life.
No man cometh unto the father, but by me. If we come to God's
presence outside of a representative, we will not be accepted. We have
to have a representative. We have to have a lamb. But if
we do have a representative and the maid had one in Jairus who
brought her sins to Christ and had brought the Lord to her right
where she was again she was dead she couldn't take one step to
the Lord. But Jairus brought the Lord right
there the Lord came right to her and saved her. Thankfully
in John 14 verse 6 it says no man cometh unto the father and
it doesn't stop it says but by me there is a way and it's through
Jesus Christ. Now turn over to Luke 9 for a
second. Luke 9 verse 11. Luke chapter 9 verse 11. And the people, when they knew
it, followed him and received them and spake unto them of the
kingdom of God and healed them that had need of healing. And that scripture's proven true
in this story of Jairus. and the woman with the issue
of blood, and in the maid, there was need in all of those stories,
and there was healing in all three counts. Now one more scripture
I wanna look at, Psalm chapter 40, Psalm 40. I wanna read this because if
we can come this way, if we can say this as our prayer, you'll
know if you have need or not. If you can say this from the
bottom of your heart, that this is your ask of the Lord, that
this is your level of need, then you're somebody that has need,
and you're somebody that the Lord has shown mercy to. Psalm
40, verse 11. Withhold not thou thy tender
mercies from me, O Lord. Let thy loving kindness and thy
truth continually preserve me. For innumerable evils have compassed
me about. Mine iniquities have taken hold
upon me so that I am not able to look up. They are more than
the hairs of mine head. Therefore, my heart faileth me.
Be pleased, O Lord, to deliver me. O Lord, make haste to help
me. Let them be ashamed and confounded
together that seek after my soul to destroy it. Let them be driven
backward and put to shame that wish me evil. Let them be desolate
for a reward of their shame that say unto me, aha, aha. Let all
those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee. Let such
as love thy salvation say continually, the Lord be magnified. But I
am poor and needy, yet the Lord thinketh upon me. Thou art my
help and my deliverer. Make no tearing. Oh my God. All
right.
