the story of the Lord meeting this woman who had been married
five times and was cohabiting with someone she was not married
to. And he revealed his gospel to her. He revealed that he was
the Christ to her. And she went out at the end of
this chapter, we read, Verse 39, and many of the Samaritans
of the city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which
testified, he told me all that ever I did. So when the Samaritans
were coming to him, they besought him that he would tarry with
them, and he abode there two days, and many more believed
because of his own word, and said unto the woman, now we believe,
not because of thy saying, For we have heard him ourselves and
know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world. And it's my prayer that the Lord
will speak from his word. So someone listening will know
indeed that he is the Christ, the savior of the world. Now I want to begin in verse
one of John chapter four. This is such a beautiful story
and it gives us the timelessness of holy scripture. This could
be our day so easily. When therefore the Lord knew
how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more
disciples than John, though Jesus himself baptized not but his
disciples, he left Judea and departed into Galilee. Now there
was some kind of discussion as to who was having the most baptisms,
and it was seen that the Lord, Jesus, was baptizing more disciples
than John. And this is so human, people
think, well, which one's being the most blessed? Which one's
being the most used? And I love the way the Lord just
departs from that. He's not going to have anything
to do with spiritual competition. Verse four says, and he must
needs go through Samaria. There's only one reason why he
must need to do anything. He said, I must be about my father's
business. He must do his father's will. And that's why he must need to
go through Samaria. You see, one of his elect was
there and he was going to make himself known to her. We read
in verse five, Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is
called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to
his son Joseph. Now, Jacob's well was there. It had been there for centuries.
It's still here today. Jacob's well was there. Jesus,
therefore, being wearied with his journey, set thus on the
well, and it was about the sixth hour. Now this lets us know something
about the humanity of Jesus Christ. The scripture says he was wearied
with his journey. Have you ever been weary, tired? The Lord was, because he has
the same limitations as a man that you and I do. When he performed
the miracles that he performed, he never performed anything for
himself. He was to have the same limitations
that you and I have, and he was wearied thus with his journey. And he sat down at the well,
it was about the six hour, it was about noon, the hottest time
of the day. There cometh a woman of Samaria
to draw water. Now, what was this woman coming
at noon for? There are reasons to believe that women
always came early in the morning. It was not so hot, and they would
have to bring the water for the day, for washing, for cleaning,
for drinking, and it was quite an ordeal, and they would go
early in the morning. But I believe this woman came
at noon because she was probably the object of judgment, people
judging her. She'd been married five times,
and I can imagine people would say, she's got issues, what's
wrong with her? And she probably just didn't
want to be around these people. And so she comes at noon when
she thought no one would be there. Seven, there cometh a woman of
Samaria to draw water. Now, I have no doubt that the
Lord was waiting for her to get there. He had ordained this appointment
with this woman, and he sits wearied with his journey, waiting
for this woman to get there. You see, this is a woman he loved. This is a woman he had loved
before the foundation of the world. This is a woman he was
going to die for her sins, and he's waiting for her to get there. Jesus saith unto her, Give me
to drink. For his disciples were gone away
into the city to buy meat. Then saith the woman of Samaria
unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of
me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings
with the Samaritans. When this woman comes to the
well, she sees this Jewish man, and he asks her for a drink of
water, and she's shocked. You see, things then were as
they are now, prejudice. one group of people believing
themselves to be superior to another group of people. The
Jews thought themselves to be superior to the Samaritans, and
they looked down upon them. As a matter of fact, when the
Jews were contending with Christ, they said, say we not well that
thou art a Samaritan? That's the lowest form they could
give him, and ask the devil? This woman was shocked when he
spoke to her because she didn't think a Jewish person would speak
to a Samaritan. And you think of today, you've
got one group of people that think they're better than others,
racism. You know, racism is so stupid. And let me tell you why. There's only one race, the human
race. And that is so idiotic for one
group of people to think that they're superior to another,
or wealthy people thinking they're more important than poor people,
just on and on. It's always been that way. And
this is what's taking place then. And she was shocked. when the
Lord spoke to her and she said, how is it that you being a Jew
ask a drink of me which I'm a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have
no dealings with the Samaritans. Now the Lord gave her an answer
that shocked her. Here is what he said unto her,
if thou knewest the gift of God, And who it is that saith to me,
give me to drink? Thou would have asked of him,
and he would have given thee living water. Now you can bet this created
an interest in this woman. She didn't know yet who he was,
but he says to this woman, if you knew the gift of God. Now this is what every natural
man is ignorant of. They think they can purchase
God's gift. They think they can earn God's
gift. They don't understand that salvation
really is the free gift of God. And by free, I mean absolutely
no strings attached. The free gift of God. Christ is the free gift of God. God so loved the world that he
gave his only begotten son. Christ is called the unspeakable
gift. Language fails to speak of the
glory and the freeness of this gift. He's called the free gift.
He's called the gift of righteousness. Do you know if you have righteousness?
It's not because of something that you've achieved. It's because
He gave you righteousness. The only way you'll be righteous
is if He gives you His free gift. Faith is called the gift of God. If you have faith, it's because
He gave it to you. Repentance is called the gift of God. If
you have repentance, He gave it to you. Eternal life is called
the gift of God. The wages of sin is death, but
the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Now, the Lord says to this woman,
if you knew the gift of God and who it was that saith to thee,
give me to drink. If you knew who I am, if you
knew, if you ever come to know who I really am, he's the son
of God. He's the God man. He's the second
person of the Trinity. He's the creator of the universe.
He's the ruler of all things. If you knew who I am, if you
knew who it was that asketh of thee to give me a drink, here's
what you have done, you'd ask. and he would give you living
water. If you knew, you'd ask, and he
would give you living water. The woman saith unto him, verse
11, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. From whence then hast thou this
living water? Now, she still didn't understand
what he was talking about. All she understood was H2O and
the effort it took to bring it up from the well. That well's
about 135 feet deep, and it would take a lot of effort to get that
water up, and you don't have anything to get it up with. And
then she makes this statement, are you greater than our father
Jacob, which gave us this well and drank thereof himself and
his children and his cattle? Let me answer that for you. My
dear friend, he's infinitely greater than Jacob. This is Jacob's
creator. This is the God of Jacob. This
is Jacob's savior. Jesus answered and said unto
her, Whosoever drinketh of this water, this water that is drawn
from this well, will thirst again. It'll satisfy your thirst now,
but you're gonna be thirsty again tomorrow. And this can be said
of anything in this life. I don't care what it is. If you're
looking for satisfaction in your job, in your family, in your
marriage, in your children, in your good deeds, in your religion,
you'll thirst again. I don't care what it is. You drink of this water, you'll
thirst again. It will not give true satisfaction. But, whosoever drinketh of the
water that I shall give him, shall never thirst. But the water that I shall give
him shall be in him a well of water, springing up into everlasting
life." Now, this water that he gives is his gospel. It's his grace. It's his salvation. This is the water he gives. Now, what does it mean to never
thirst again? If I trust Jesus Christ only
as everything in my salvation, I don't look to my works, I don't
look to yesterday's experience, I don't look to the things I'll
try to do tomorrow, I don't look to my feelings. I look to Him
only as all God requires of me. I don't look anywhere else other
than Him alone. He is all I have. I don't have anything to commend
myself to God, only Him. He's all I want. I don't want
to have anything else because I know that anything that comes
from me is no good. He's all I need. This is trusting
Christ only. Do you know you'll find satisfaction
in that? You'll find complete satisfaction in that. And if
it's not that way, you'll never have satisfaction. You'll never
have confidence. The only thing we can truly have
confidence in is who he is and what he did, being everything
in salvation. Now, you drink of the religion
of this world, the waters of this world, you'll thirst again.
But if you drink of the water I shall give you, you'll never
thirst. The water that I shall give you
shall be a well of water springing up into everlasting life, a life
that cannot die, a life that's perfect before God. Verse 15,
the woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water that I thirst
not, neither come hither to draw. Now she still didn't understand
what he was saying. All she understood was, I would
like to have water where I'd never be thirsty again, and I
wouldn't have to come here to draw. Can you imagine what work
and effort it took every morning for the women to come and get
water? She was interested in this. And then the Lord said
to her, Jesus saith unto her, go, call thy husband, and come
hither. The woman answered and said,
I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast
well said, I have no husband. For thou hast had five husbands,
and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband. In that saidst
thou truly. Now what is the Lord saying to
this woman? He's saying, I know you. He wasn't
saying this harshly, but he's saying, I know you. I've heard
people say that the Lord was now confronting her with her
sin because she couldn't be saved until she first dealt with her
sin. Well, if that's the case, then you won't be saved either.
We have the sin she has, if not outwardly, inwardly. He's letting
this woman know, I know who you are. And this woman clearly had
issues. Five marriages. The person she
was with now wasn't her husband. So what does she say in verse
19? The woman said unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art
a prophet. And she'd never met this man. And yet he knew about
her past. He knew about her five different
marriages. How would he know this? How would he know that
the man she was cohabiting with even then was not her husband?
And she'd never met this man. She'd never seen him in her life.
And yet he knows all about her. She says, Sir, I perceive that
thou art a prophet. Now she goes on to her religious
language. Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you say
that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Now,
the Samaritans did believe the worship was to be in this mountain.
They were right there, not Jerusalem. And the Jews believed that worship
was to only be in Jerusalem, and she was pulling her denomination
against his, so she thought. But we believe this way, y'all
believe that way, as if it made any difference. Verse 21, Jesus said unto her,
woman, believe me. You know why she believed? He
commanded her to. If he commands you to believe,
you'll believe. You see, he doesn't offer anything. He tells you
what to do. He doesn't offer you salvation. He says, believe, and you believe. That is his invincible grace. Woman, believe me. The hour cometh
when you shall neither in this mountain nor yet at Jerusalem
worship the Father you worship, you know not what we know what
we worship for salvation is of the Jews. Now he is saying your
worship is ignorant worship. You don't even know what you're
doing. We know what we worship for salvation is of the Jews.
Now here, he's not simply talking about the Jews of Israel. He's talking about the true Jew,
the spiritual Jew, every believer, is a Jew. He is not a Jew which
is one outwardly, neither is that circumcision outward which
is in the flesh, but he's a Jew which is one inwardly, whose
circumcision is that of the heart. Paul said, we are the circumcision,
which worship God in the spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and
have no confidence in the flesh. Salvation is of the Jews. But
he goes on to say in verse 23, but the hour cometh, and now
is when the true worshipers Beloved, there is such a thing as true
worship. The hour cometh and now is when the true worshipers
shall worship the Father. True worship is the worship of
the Father. Now God's not everybody's father. You know, the Lord said to a
group of people, you're your father, the devil and the lust
of your father, you'll do. He's only father to believers. And the believers are those who
come to the father by the Lord Jesus Christ. He said, I am the
way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the father, but
by me. Now, the Lord tells us true worshipers
shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth. Now, what does that mean? Well,
when Adam fell, the scripture says he died. The Lord told him
that's what was going to take place. And the day you eat thereof,
you shall surely die. Now, he didn't die physically
on that day. He lived over 900 years after that. And he did
die that day, though. You say, how's that? His spirit
died. His spirit died. His body didn't. His soul didn't. that his spirit
died. And that's what Paul talks about
when he says, and you hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses
and sins. And it's only a spiritual man
that can worship. That's a man born of the spirit,
given a spiritual nature that he did not have until God saved
him. It takes the new birth, it takes
the Holy Spirit, it takes a spiritual nature to worship. They that
worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth, the truth
of the gospel. God doesn't use error. He only
uses the truth of the gospel, the truth of who He is, the truth
of who man is, the truth of how He saves by Christ. They that
worship Him must worship Him in spirit and truth, for the
Father seeketh such to worship Him. I want to be one of those
people. God is spirit. He's not flesh like me and you.
He's spirit. He's infinite. That means He's
everywhere in the universe and outside of the universe. He's
not limited by space or time or matter. He's everywhere, He's
omnipotent, all-powerful, omnipresent, everywhere at once. He's not
made of parts, He's spirit. God is spirit, and they that
worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth. The woman
saith unto Him, I know the Messiah comes, which is called Christ.
When He has come, He'll tell us all things. What she's saying
is, I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm clueless,
but I know this. When the Messiah comes, they
were looking for a coming Messiah. When he comes, he'll tell us
all things. And the Lord says something to
this woman that he never said to anybody else. Jesus saith
unto her, I that speak unto thee, am he. I am the Messiah. And upon this came his disciples,
and marveled that he talked with the woman, yet no man said, what
seekest thou, or why talkest thou with her? The woman then
left her waterpot, she forgot about its importance, and she
went her way into the city, and saith to the men, come see a
man which told me all things that ever I did. Is not this
the Christ? Now, here was her testimony.
I've met a man who told me everything I've ever done. Is not this the
Christ? Now, is she merely referring
to her five marriages? Well, that's certainly included,
but this is a spiritual revelation. When God tells you everything
you've ever done, you find out two things. Number one, everything
you've ever done is sin. Everything. Good stuff, bad stuff,
indifferent stuff, if you did it, it's sin because of who you
are. You realize that you've not kept one of God's laws one
time, that you are a sinner. Now, nobody knows they're a sinner
in the scriptural sense of the term, unless God reveals it to
them. But not only was it revealed
to her that she was a sinner, She found out through the gospel
that everything she had ever done was good and righteous and
without sin. Somebody says, now how can you
be nothing but sin and then turn around and say something like
that? Now here's the gospel. Christ bore my sin, put it away,
made it non-existent, so I stand before God as one having never
sinned. You see, when God saves somebody,
He gives them a new history, and that history is all good.
That's what Christ accomplished on the cross. When he said, it
is finished, the salvation of everybody he died for was finished,
accomplished, signed, sealed, and delivered. Their sin is no
more. That's what justification is.
If I'm justified, that means I never sinned. And this is the
glory of the gospel. God has made a way for him to
be just and yet justify the ungodly through the work of the Lord
Jesus Christ on the cross. She says, is not this the Christ?
God's prophet, like no other prophet. Every other prophet
said, thus saith the Lord. He never said that. He said,
I say unto you. He's God's priest, like no other
priest. He doesn't bring the blood of
animals that can never put away sin. He brings his own blood
that puts away sin to the Father. He's God's king like no other
king. Every other king, any power they have is borrowed. He has
authority in and of himself as the God-man, God's prophet, God's
priest, and God's king. Now we read in verse 39. And
many of the Samaritans of the city believed on him, for the
saying of the woman was testified, he told me all things ever that
I did. So when the Samaritans were coming
to him, they besought him that he would tarry with them. And
he abode there two days, and many more believed because of
his own word, and said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because
of thy saying. For we have heard him ourselves,
and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the
world. Now, I love this title of Christ,
the Savior of the world. You see, God didn't send his
son to condemn the world. The world was already condemned.
but that the world through him might be saved. Now, if you're someone who needs
to be saved, you see you can't save yourself and you need to
be saved, he is the savior you need. Call on him. Ask for mercy. You'll have it
if you ask for mercy. Now we have this message on DVD
and CD. If you call the church, write,
we'll send you a copy. This is Todd Nyberg, praying
that God will be pleased to make himself known to you. Amen. To
