Turn back with me to Hebrews
chapter 1. Hebrews 1. Verse 1 of Hebrews 1. God, who at sundry times and
in diverse manners, spake in times past unto the fathers by
the prophets. In the Old Testament, God was
pleased to speak to men and speak through men. Prophets of old,
the patriarchs, Moses, David, Isaiah, you could just go through
the list It was there at the burning bush that God spoke to
Moses. Remember that? The Lord said
to Moses, He said, I've surely seen the affliction of my people. There they were in Egypt. He
said, I've seen their affliction. He said, I've heard their cry.
Isn't that an amazing thing that God would hear the cry of His
people? He said, I've heard their cry
by reason of their taskmaster. He said, I know. I know their
sorrows. That he can relate to his people. He said, I know their sorrows.
And I am come down for this purpose to deliver them. I'm going to
deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and I'm going
to bring them up. I'm going to bring him up out
of that land to a good land, a large land flowing with milk
and honey." In 2 Samuel chapter 12, David
told Nathan, he said, I've sinned against God. And Nathan the prophet
speaking on behalf of the Lord said, also hath put away thy sin."
You're not going to die. The prophet Isaiah, 35 times
in the book of Isaiah, we read this, thus saith the Lord. Thus saith the Lord. Thus saith
the Lord God, behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation, a stone,
a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation, and he that
believeth shall not make haste. He said, thus saith the Lord
that created thee, O Jacob, and he that formed thee, O Israel,
fear not. Boy, we have reason to fear,
don't we? If we know anything of our sin
and of God's holiness, we have great reason to fear. But he
says, fear not. I didn't leave you there in your
sin. I have redeemed thee. I have called thee by thy name. Thou art mine. Thus saith the Lord, the King
of Israel, and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts. I'm the first,
I'm the last, and beside me there is no God." None else. Prophecy. Prophecy came not in
old time by the will of man. These weren't men's words. Holy men spake as they were moved
by the Holy Ghost. God spake. He spake to the fathers. How? Through the prophets. And
in these last days, He didn't stop there, did He? He hath spoken
unto us by His Son. By His very own Son. John 1.18
we read, No man hath seen God at any time. Only the begotten Son, which
is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him." He declares
Him. And it's through His Son, it's
through Jesus Christ, the Son of God, that God is fully revealed. God's too holy for us to look
upon Him. But His Son? His Son hath declared
Him. Isn't that more reason to honor
Him, to reverence Him, to worship the Lord Jesus Christ? Again,
Hebrews 1, God, who at sundry times and in diverse manners
spake in times past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath
in these last days spoken unto us. by his son, whom he hath
appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds,
who being the brightness of his glory and the express image of
his person, upholding all things by the word of his power." In
these few verses here, these three verses, I'd like for us
to see three things this morning. One, who he is, who the Lord
Jesus Christ is. I pray he'd be pleased to reveal
unto us what he has done. Where He is now. Who, what, and where. First, who He is. Look at, again,
Hebrews 1. He's the Son of God. God has
spoken through His Son. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. I want to know something about
who He is, who the Lord Jesus Christ is. I want to know not
just about Him, I want to know Him. I want to know Him. God's Word says this is the record
that God has given us eternal life and this life It's found only
in one place. It's found only in one person. It is in His Son. He that hath the Son hath life. And he that hath not the Son
of God hath not life. I want to have a saving knowledge
of Him. I must have a saving knowledge
of Him. Without a saving knowledge of
Christ, if I have no faith in Him, if I have no enjoyment of
Him, I'm dead in sin. I'm dead in my sin. He that hath
not the Son of God hath not life. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. This is the truth as it's declared
in God's Word. And this is the confession of
those who believe. Remember that eunuch? God sent
Philip to that eunuch, and he preached the gospel to him. And
as they were traveling along the way, that eunuch said, he
looked over, there was a lake, a pond, a river, some kind of
body of water, and he said, here's water. What does hinder me from being
baptized? What would prevent me from being
baptized?" And Philip asked this question. He said, Do you believe with all your heart? That's not real complicated,
is it? Do you believe with all your heart? If you do, thou must. And that eunuch, he replied,
Believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. These things,
these things in God's Word, they're written that ye might believe. Believe what? That Jesus is the
Christ. that He is the Son of God and
that believing Him, you might have life through His name. Oh, there's power in that name,
isn't there? He is the Christ, that one that
was promised, that one that was prophesied, that one that was
pictured throughout the Old Testament. What's His name? Immanuel. What's that mean? God with us. Eternal life is in His Son. It is in Christ. By believing
on Christ, believing Christ through His name, through His blessed
name, we have eternal life. We have access to the throne,
the throne of God, acceptance before God. Jesus Christ is the
Son of God. He's the Savior. Jesus Christ,
He must save you or else we'll perish. If we don't have Christ,
we will perish. There is no other name under
heaven given among men whereby we must be saved for those seeking salvation. Could there be anything more
comforting than to know Him who came to save? Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ came into the world
for what purpose? To save sinners. He's the Son
of God. And listen, He is God. He's God in human flesh. And
that being true, There is nothing impossible for Him. We look at things and we say,
well, that's just impossible. That just cannot happen. And
that's true for us, but not with God. Not with God. There is nothing. There's nothing
impossible with Him. He's able to save. Scripture
said He's able to save to the uttermost. He's able to save
you, no matter who you are, no matter
who you may be. With men, we'd be right to say
these things are impossible. But with God, with Almighty God,
all things are possible. Read on here in our text, it
says He's the heir. He's the heir of all things.
What's important about that? Well, the heir is the one who
receives the inheritance. It's His. In John 13 verse 3 we read, Jesus
knowing that the Father had what? Given all things into His hands. Rightfully so, he's the heir.
He's given all things into his hands. All blessing, all power,
all authority, all persons, all things, all grace, all glory,
all of it given into his hands. Even the redemption of his people were in his hands. He's the heir. He's the master. He's the possessor
of all things. It pleased the Father that in
Him, in Christ, should all the fullness dwell. Heir of all things. And His people were made heirs
in Him. Heirs of God. and joint heirs
with Christ." Read on. He's the Creator. He created
all things. We read in Hebrews 1, 2, "...by
whom the worlds were made." In John chapter 1, God's Word declares,
"...in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning
with God." All things, what things? All things were made by Him. And without Him was not anything
made that was made. He's eternal. He's omnipotent,
having all power and all authority. And not only did He create this
world and everything in it, He can also create in me a new heart. He can renew a right spirit within
me. Now you just think for a minute. What could we create? What could
we create? We'd like to think we could create
a lot of things. At best, we could probably create
some trouble, right? But we can create nothing. We
don't have the power. But Christ can, and He did. He did. He created the world.
Any questions about His ability? He can make us new creatures
by His grace in Christ. Isn't that good news for a group
of sinners? To see what a mighty God, an
almighty sovereign God has provided for His people. Still in Hebrews 1 verse 3, we
read, "...being the brightness of His glory." He's God. He's the brightness of His glory. Now in Scripture, you know when
we read of His humanity, we read this, that He was made. He was made. He was made sin.
He made himself of no reputation. He took upon himself the form
of a servant. He was made in the likeness of
men. When God was manifest in the
flesh, He was made something that He wasn't. But here in our text, we read
that He is God and always has been. It says, being the brightness
of His glory. He wasn't made to be God. He
is God. Being. That word being, it just
means He is. He is. He is God. He's the express image of His
person. Everything God is, Christ is. The very likeness of God, the
very... Listen, the Godhead, He is the Godhead. Deity? Jesus Christ, the Lord Jesus
Christ is Deity. He's one with the Father. All
of this is in His Son. All of this is in Christ. He's
the express image of His person. He doesn't just... My boys, you
know, they kind of look like me. But they aren't me, right? Jesus Christ is God. When Thomas saw the Lord, you
remember that doubting Thomas? What'd he say? He said, my Lord
and my God. And the Lord Jesus Christ didn't
correct him, did he? What he was saying was true.
He is the Lord and He is God. Again, His name, Immanuel, God
with us. And last in this passage that
declares who Christ is, we read again in Hebrews 1, 3, upholding
all things by the word of His power. He upholds all things
by the word of His power. This world, this universe, everything
that we can see, it was created by Him and it's held together
by Him. It's His. It's all ordered and
directed by Him. Listen to just a few verses of
Scripture. Thou hast put all things where? under his feet. We read, he hath
made all things for himself. All things are delivered unto
me of my father. That was the words of Christ
our Lord. What else do we know about all
things? All things work together for good to them that love God,
to them who are the called according to his purpose. He hath done,
does it say some things? Does it say most things? No. He hath done all things well. And as the sovereign, as king
of kings, as lord of lords, he upholds all things by the word
of his power. He just speaks the word. And then what that one man said,
he said, Lord, just speak the word. You don't have to come
to my house, just speak the word. We cannot lift him. We cannot
exalt him high enough in any fashion. God, listen, God hath
highly exalted him. and hath given him a name which
is above every name. And every knee should bow and
every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. To the glory of God the Father.
We can't lift him enough. We can't exalt him enough. And
listen, we can't get low enough in the dust for what and who
we are. Can't preach God high enough,
can't preach man low enough. Second, you still have Hebrews
1, look at verse 3. What did he do? What did he do? Well, we read this, when he had
by himself purged our sins, the Lord Jesus Christ of Himself,
the Lord Jesus Christ by Himself. You know, and you hear the same
thing. Men will say, you know, Christ
has done everything He can do or God has done everything He
can do and now it's up to you to finish that. And somehow, men are left believing
that there is something that they can do. Let me read this
to you again, just these few words here. When he had, I'm
not an English teacher, but that's past tense, I think, had, right?
Had, means it's already done. When he had what? By himself
purged our sin. As He hung on the cross, as the
Lord Jesus Christ suffered on the cross, who was there? Were
any of us there to help Him? Did we contribute anything to
that? Who was there? Who was there
to do their part when He endured the wrath and justice of God
for sin? Who was there? Everybody left him, didn't they? Denied him, departed from him. Listen to the words of one of
the prophets I mentioned earlier. Isaiah 63 verse 3 says this,
I have trodden the winepress alone, alone. And of the people there was,
he said, none, none with me. Psalm 22, commonly called the
Psalm of the Cross. Be not far from me for trouble
is near and there is none. None to help. We sing that hymn. Jesus paid it all. All the debt I owe. Sin had left
a crimson stain and he washed it white as snow. The Lord Jesus
Christ sacrificed himself. He made his very soul an offering
for sin. He made atonement for the sins
of his people. He purged our sins. He cleansed us from our sins. He took our sins upon Him, all
the sins of all His people, and He bore them. He bore the penalty
for them. He bore the punishment for them. And listen, He took them away. He took them
away. He abolished them forever. He said their sins and their
iniquities Shall I remember no more? In Jeremiah 50, 20, let
me just read this to you. In those days, and at that time,
saith the Lord, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for. Israel had plenty of iniquity,
didn't they? It's gonna be sought for. And listen to this. There shall be none. the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found,
for I will pardon them whom I reserve." They've all been taken away. There is therefore now, that's
what scripture said, there is therefore now, right now, no
condemnation. to them who were in Christ Jesus. He by himself purged our sin. How precious was that
sacrifice? Consider the love of Christ in
performing it. Scripture says, greater love
hath no man. Then he laid down his life for
his friends. Consider the power of that sacrifice. He made one sacrifice for sin
forever. Consider the price paid for it. What was that price? The precious
blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. We read, by his own blood he
entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal
redemption for us. For if the blood of bulls and
goats and the sprinkling of a heifer and the unclean sanctify the
purified of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ,
who through the eternal spirit offered himself without spot
to God, Purge your conscience from dead works to serve the
living God. Could we ever? We used to watch
that Antiques Roadshow and they'd hold something up and they'd
tell a story about it and then they'd guess a price. Could we ever even begin to enter
into put a price on a value of his sacrifice for his people. The price he paid, what did he
do? What did he do? He by himself
purged our sin. Who he is, what he did, and then
third, here's the last point, where he is now. Look at, again,
Hebrews 1-3, and you gotta read this together. When he had by
himself purged our sin, he sat down, sat down on the right hand
of the majesty on high. Turn with me to Hebrews 10. Let's
turn over just a few pages, Hebrews 10. Look beginning with verse 11,
Hebrews 10 verse 11. Every priest standeth daily ministering
and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices which can never take
away sin. But this man, Speaking of the
Lord Jesus Christ, this man, after he had offered one sacrifice
for sins, forever sat down on the right hand of God from henceforth,
expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. Those priests
of old, They had no power to finish the work. They were just
pictures. Pictures. But the Lord Jesus Christ, when
He had by Himself purged our sins, He sat down. The work finished. The work complete. He entered into His rest once
for all. having obtained eternal redemption
for his people. Where is he? Where is he? He's seated at the right hand
of the majesty on high. I just have you consider four
or five things in closing as it relates to God's people, in
relationship to where he is, where he is now. Scripture says Christ entered
in as the forerunner. There are going to be others
to follow, aren't he? He's the forerunner. There are going to be others
to follow. Our Lord said this, He said, I go and prepare a place
for you that where I am, where is He? He's seated at the right
hand of God. He said, where I am, there you
may be also. In Ephesians 2, verse 6, we read
that He raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly
places. Where? In Christ Jesus. Again, where is He seated? At
the right hand of the Majesty on High. Revelation 3, verse
20, Well, I grant to sit with me
in my throne, even as I also overcame. And I am set down with
my father in his throne. One more verse, herein. Herein
is love made perfect. that we may have boldness in
the day of judgment, because as he is, as he is, so are we in this world,
seated at the right hand of the majesty on high. I pray he'd
give us a glimpse, just a glimpse of who he is. what he's done
and where he is, where he is now. All right, Isaac, come lead
us in a closing hand.
