7 Distinct Truths- Heb. 1:1-5

The sermon "Appointed Heir" by Caleb Hickman explores the theological doctrine of Christ's preeminence and eternal sonship as presented in Hebrews 1:1-5. The preacher articulates seven distinct truths about Jesus, emphasizing His appointment as heir of all things and detailing how this appointment underscores His divine sovereignty and unchangeable nature. Key scriptural references include Hebrews 1:2, which indicates Christ's role in creation and His status as the Father's chosen heir, along with a discussion of Matthew 21, which illustrates humanity's rejection of Christ's authority. The practical significance of the message is rooted in the assurance that through faith in Christ, believers are co-heirs with Him, transforming the understanding of inheritance from generational to grace-based, affirming the steadfastness of God's promise and the unchanging nature of Christ.

“Thanks be to God, the Lord chose to make Jesus Christ heir of all things and do whatsoever he chose to do with whomsoever and whatsoever he chose to do, howsoever he chose to do it with.”

“Believers are heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ because of what he has done.”

Hebrews this morning if you'd
like to turn there. Hebrews chapter one. Now the gospel in its simplicity
has never been altered, has never been changed. It's always been
the same because of the message of it, the author of it, the
finisher of it. being the Lord Jesus Christ himself.
He's unchangeable. Therefore, the gospel is unchangeable.
It's everlasting because God is everlasting. Everything about
God is eternal. Everything about God is consistently
eternal. Our God is consistent. Aren't
you glad that The world that you live in, the places you go,
you can see, we were at a mall just the other day and I remember
malls used to be really popular, now it's like strip malls where
that's becoming more of it. Everything gets outdated and
then new things come in and then you have, you bought a TV many
years ago, that was the state of the art TV whenever TVs first
came out, they weighed 1,000 pounds. Now they weigh 10. And
so things are always changing and new things are always coming
out. It's not so with our God. He's consistent. He's the same. He doesn't change. He doesn't
get better because He's already the best. He can't get worse
because He's God. He's perfect. He's unalterable.
He's unchangeable. And here in Hebrews, We have
seven distinct truths about our God. We have seven distinct truths
about who the Lord Jesus Christ is and what he's done for his
people. We have seven distinct truths that if not preached,
we don't have the gospel. The gospel's right here in the
first five verses. Everything about our Lord at
any time cannot be compromised. All of his attributes are the
same. Everything about him remains constant. Are you and I constant
in any way? How often am I, uh, you've been
accused by your spouse of being moody one day or being, well,
you're just grumpy today. You're just hateful. You're just,
I'm guilty. I didn't, I don't mean to be
that way. You know, you wake up one day on the wrong side
of the bed. That's the excuse people say. We're just so unchanged.
We're changing all the time, aren't we? We'll be happy one
minute and Things that made us happy before doesn't make us
happy now. We want something new, something different. We're changing. God's not changing. Aren't you glad that he's not
angry with his people ever because they're found in Christ? He's
not angry with his people in any way because there's nothing
to be angry about with them. Christ put away their sin. He's
angry with the wicked, the scripture says. He hates the workers of
iniquity. But what does the Lord say about
his people? That they're the very righteousness of God and
the Lord Jesus Christ. Our Lord never had a beginning
and never had an end. Can't explain that, we believe
it. You and I had a beginning. And thanks be to God, if we're
in Christ, we'll never have an end. We'll never have an end.
But we'll have a physical end, won't we? It just won't be a
spiritual one. We'll have an eternal life when we enter into
glory by His grace alone. We'll forever be one single day
in glory with Him forever. Everything about our God is everlasting,
never had a beginning and never had an end. This includes his
grace towards his people. This includes his merciful kindness. This includes his truth. This
includes his sovereignty, everything about him. Listen to Psalm 117,
for his merciful kindness is great toward us, toward us, toward
his people. And the truth of the Lord endureth
forever. I like that word endureth with
the ETH on it. That means it is enduring now
and it's enduring now and there's never going to be a time where
his truth does not endure. How great the merciful kindness
shown towards God's elect on behalf of the Lord Jesus Christ.
How glorious is his truth that really saved sinners. that really
saved His people from their sin. There's no other truth that's
glorious in comparison to that. No other rest that we have. Now
here in our text, and I often get ahead of myself, and I guess
that's okay. It's just how it happens. But
I've said a few things I meant to wait to say, but that's all
right. Let's read our text here. It tells us about who God is
and what the Lord's done in these seven distinct truths. Let's
read them together. Chapter 1, verse 1, God, who at sundry times
and in diverse manners spake in time past unto the fathers
by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his
son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he
made the worlds, who being the brightness of his glory and the
express image of his person, and upholding all things by the
word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat
down on the right hand of the majesty on high. being made so
much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained
a more excellent name than they. For unto which of the angels
said he at any time, thou art my son, this day have I begotten
thee. And again, I will be to him a
father and he shall be to me a son. The writer of Hebrews
give us seven distinct truths about our Lord. There's seven
of them here. Now I normally don't do series,
as you all know. I've been pastor here for a year
and a half, give or take, and never done a series before. Not
really had any interest in doing a series, but there's an option
on Sermon Audio to call it a series. So I've titled these seven messages
I believe the Lord's given me. I was going to preach two or
three of them at a time, and they're just too glorious to
Take and do that with I feel like we can individualize if
the Lord be merciful we can individualize these and we'll see the Lord
Jesus Christ and his Gospel his truth in every single one of
these truths and so that series is called the seven truths seven
distinct truths If you want to know If someone's preaching the
gospel ask this question does this man's gospel? declare these
seven distinct truths of God about who he is, about who the
Lord Jesus Christ is, about what he has done, about where he is
now. These seven distinct truths are
this. And I'll go ahead and tell you
the title before I tell you all seven of them. This morning it's
Appointed Heir is the title of this message. It's the second
one. Last week we heard the message and the messenger. That was the
first one. Christ is the only way that God speaks. The second
one this morning is Appointed Heir. Now here are these, these
seven truths are. Number one, how God speaks by
his son. Number two, he appointed Jesus
Christ heir of all things. Number three, by him, the Lord
Jesus Christ, he made the worlds. Number four, he's the brightness
of his glory and express image of his person. Number five, he
upheld all things by the word of his power. Number six, he
alone purged his people's sins. And number seven, his work is
finished. He sat down. He sat down. These seven things,
that is the message. That is the message of who God
is, what God has done, why he did it, who gets all the glory
for it. It's all about him, isn't it? That's what this message
is. Here is the who is the Lord Jesus Christ. He tells us here,
that God appointed Jesus Christ heir of all things. That was
his choice to do so, wasn't it? As a matter of fact, he says,
at which point did he appoint angels heirs? At which point
did he say unto the angels, who are, they're created beings as
well, but which ones of them? See, the Lord Jesus Christ is
not a created being. He's eternal. The scripture says,
Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever. The Lord
chose to appoint Jesus Christ heir of everything. Everything. That's what he says
right here. Everything. All things. All things. Now understand something. This is God's sovereign choice. This is God's sovereign right
as the father. This is God's purpose that cannot
be changed or altered because of everything we just described
him as he is. being eternal, being everlasting. None of his attributes can be
compromised. He chose to appoint Jesus Christ heir of all things. Now, what are we heirs of in
and of ourself? Ask yourself that. What are you
the heir of? Well, we can only say physical things, right? Because
our father, our physical dad, parents, whatever, would have
made us heirs of their inheritance. And I mentioned a little bit
of this last week. I can't appoint you heir to somebody else's estate. If that was the case, I mean,
think about, that would be chaos, wouldn't it? If I was to give,
if I said, okay, now my children are your heirs. You have to give
my children everything you possess when you die. Well, what about
their children? What about your children? That doesn't make any
sense, does it? In your possessions, whatever
power we want to call that, your possessions, you have the authority
to, and you really don't have any, we know that. Government
owns everything. God owns everything besides that. So really, we don't
own anything, do we? From dust we are, from dust we're
gonna return. You understand what I'm saying, though. In all that
being said, whatever you do possess, you can leave to somebody when
you die. The point is, is if God owns everything, and he made
Christ heir of everything, all things, what's left to us? Nothing. Not in and of herself,
not in and of ourself, not according to our blood, because our inheritance
is death from our father, Adam. That's what we inherited. We
inherited a sin nature. We inherited death by that sin,
by that sin nature. That's what we inherited. Yet
men envy the inheritance of Jesus Christ. Understand what I'm saying
here. Men envy, this is where it comes
down. In all false religion, men envy the inheritance of Jesus
Christ. Christ didn't just inherit all
things, physically speaking, in the world. He didn't just
inherit the sky and the earth and the dirt and the creatures.
No, he inherited the wisdom. He is the wisdom of God. He inherited
the sovereignty. He is God, so he is sovereign. He inherited all the attributes
of God as well. He is God, that's the point.
And therefore he owns all things. Men envy that in the Lord Jesus
Christ. Tell somebody that salvation
is by a choice that you make. You tell them that you can choose
to have an inheritance. All you gotta do is choose. That
doesn't make any sense physically. Why would that make any sense
spiritually speaking when we're born dead in trespasses and in
sin? Can't choose to be made alive. A dead man can't choose
that. Thanks be to God, the Lord chose to make Jesus Christ heir
of all things and do whatsoever he chose to do with whomsoever
and whatsoever he chose to do, howsoever he chose to do it with.
He's God, he's God. Men want to take the inheritance
of the Lord. They want to take his Lord ship. They want to be God. That's where it started all the
way in the beginning in heaven. When Lucifer said, I will ascend
above the heavens, I will ascend above the throne. I will be like
the most high. That's where it started. Jealous
of the inheritance of the Lord Jesus Christ. Is that not what
that is? I'm going to be God. See, Christ is the heir to the
throne. He's God. He's God. Satan envied that. Lucifer at
the time envied that, wanted to be God. And every man born
of a woman other than the Lord Jesus Christ is envious of the
Lord Jesus Christ. The flesh wants glory for self. I want to show you that in Matthew.
Turn with me there if you'd like to, Matthew 21. We have a parable
here given by our Lord, and it's an allegory of the Lord Jesus
Christ himself being sent of the Father. But the account goes
that there was a certain householder, the scripture says, a certain
householder that makes him Lord over that house, by definition,
the Lord of a house. And he planted a vineyard. And
over that vineyard, he made a husband. And by definition, a husband
is one that tends to a vineyard. He put a husband in charge of
it. Now at the appointed time, when the harvest came, he sent
forth his servants to collect the bounty of the harvest. He
owned the vineyard. He owned the servants. He owned
the husband that he had pointed over it. And he sent his servants
down to fetch the fruit of the labor. He sent the servants down
to fetch the fruit that would have grown. And the men saw,
and the husband saw the servants coming and they killed the servants.
They said, we're not gonna share our fruit with the owner, with
the master. We're gonna keep it for ourself.
So likewise, the master, the Lord over the vineyard sent servants
again. And what did they do to them?
They killed them again. And finally, look with me in verse 37. Matthew
chapter 21, in verse 37. But last of all, he sent unto
them his son saying, they will reverence my son. They will reverence
my son. I sent servants before and they
didn't reverence them because these servants were not in a
position of authority. They were not in a position of
power, of leadership, but they'll reverence my son. They'll reverence
my son. And what happened here? He says, But last of all, he
sent unto them his son saying, they will reverence my son, verse
38. But when the husbandman saw the son, they said among themselves,
this is the heir. Come, let us kill him and let
us seize on his inheritance. And they called him, cast him
out of the vineyard and they slew him. When the Lord therefore
of the vineyard cometh, what will he do to those husbandmen?
What will he do to those husbandmen? Well, everybody answered and
said unto him, he will miserably destroy those wicked men and
will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall
render him the fruits in their seasons. Jesus saith unto them,
did you never read the scriptures? The stone which the builders
rejected, the same has become the head of the corner. This
is the Lord's doing. And it is marvelous in our eyes. Therefore
said I unto you, the kingdom of God shall be taken from you
and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And
whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken. What stone
is he talking about? He's talking about himself, the
chief cornerstone, isn't he? He's talking about himself being
the rock of ages, being the one set apart, the elect of God to
be the cornerstone where salvation is built upon. He says, whosoever shall fall
on this stone shall be broken, but on whomsoever it shall fall,
it will grind him to powder. When the chief priests and Pharisees
had heard this parable, they perceived that he spake of them.
And when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude
because they took him for a prophet. What's the picture here, brethren?
Is it not the Lord Himself sending all of the prophets of the Old
Testament, sending all the preachers of the Old Testament to the people
of Israel saying, repent, repent for the judgment of the Lord
is coming. The wrath of God is going to
fall. You're going to be brought into captivity. Repent. None
would hear the words. They took the prophets. What'd
they do with them? They killed them. Many of the
prophets lost their lives. They were stoned. Many terrible
things were done to them. That's what the servants that
first came to this vineyard to get the fruits that belonged
to the master, that belonged to the Lord. And the Lord knew
sending his son forth, the very purpose of it was to redeem his
people. But what did they do to the son then when he came?
The Lord Jesus Christ himself, the heir. That's what they said
here. We want his inheritance. We'll kill him and take his inheritance.
See, he's heir of all things. Scripture says in Acts chapter
2 verse 23, you have taken and with wicked hands have crucified
and slain the son of glory. This is the picture here. This
is what all men will do when they see the Son coming, when
they see the Lord Jesus Christ as the heir of God, as God himself. If you tell men that, they'll
say, away with this man. Let his blood be on us and on
our children. No, we want the inheritance for ourself. But
thanks be to God, his elect fall upon that stone. And it says
they're broken. It doesn't say they're ground to pieces. It
says when the stone falls upon those, who rejected their ground
to pieces. That's the wrath of God. But
those that fall upon the stone, those that are made to cleave
under the stone and cry out, Lord, have mercy on me, the sinner,
they're broken in pieces. And the Lord reveals unto them
that he has to be all their righteousness. He gets all the glory, that he's
the one that pieces them back together, makes them born again,
if you want to put it that way. He's the one that takes a bunch
of broken cisterns that can hold no water and makes them vessels
of honor unto the King. Now you and I look and we say,
not unto us, O Lord, be the inheritance, unto your name. Not unto us be
glory and praise and honor, but unto your name be glory and all
praise and all honor. We don't deserve an inheritance
of life. We deserve the inheritance of death given by our father
Adam and passed down from generation to generation. Lord, have mercy
on me, the sinner. And only those who have fallen
on the stone will have that prayer, will have that cry. See, Christ
is heir of all. He owns everything. He is described
as the omnipotent, eternal God. God manifest in the flesh, the
Lord Jesus Christ, is the omnipotent, eternal God. And yet, for our
sakes, for his people's sakes, he was made poor. For our sakes,
he was made sin for us who knew no sin. For the Lord's people's
sakes, the eternal, omnipotent God, who had been appointed heir,
who is appointed heir of all things, died so that his people
would be made the righteousness of God in him. The Lord Jesus
Christ is the sovereign creator of all things. He's not like
God. Men talk about the Lord Jesus
Christ as having attributes of God. Well, he walked on water,
so he's like God. No, he is God, isn't he? He is
God. He's not a type. He's not a picture,
as a matter of fact, every type and picture in the scripture
points to Him, points to Him. He's God manifest in the flesh.
Now these seven distinct truths, brethren, found here and in our
text are necessary, they're vital to preach if we're gonna preach
the gospel. Can't take one of them out. No,
he is the appointed heir of all things. This tells us who he
is. He's the son of God. It tells us that he owns all
things, that he is the creator of all things. Every question
pertaining to God and his son can be answered right here. Now,
if we're to ask the right question this morning, it would be, do
we want the truth? Not many people want the truth.
They don't want to hear about him being heir of all things.
They don't want to hear about his inheritance. Everybody, and
I've heard many preachers say this. The most recent preacher
I heard say this was Tim James. He said, everybody wants to get
all they can, and they can all they get, and then they sit on
the can. They don't want to share what they get. They want to hold
it and hog it for themselves. And that's men by nature, isn't
it? That's men by nature. Glorious truth of the gospel
is the heir of everything, the heir of all things humbled himself
unto death, even the death of the cross. Would we die for our
children? I would like to think I would.
You would like to think you would. I would give my life for them
to live. That's how much you love your
children. Would you die for your worst enemy that slayed your children?
Well, there's a question. There's a question. That's what
Christ did. He died for us, not when we were
godly, not when we were good, not when we were sinless, but
when we were yet sinners, Christ died for the ungodly. The one that has the inheritance
of everything died for the ungodly. Why did he do that? To make a
way so that you and I can maybe be saved? No, he put away the
sin of his people. He did that to make us godly. He became the unclean thing to
make us clean. He became sin for us that we
would be made the righteousness of God in him. This is what our
Lord did. This is who he is. This is what
he's done. Do we want the truth? Ask this question,
who's Jesus Christ? Knowing the answer to that question.
Knowing that answer, not up here, not in the head, not a knowledge,
not a figuring out calculative. No, I'm talking about knowing.
Knowing as in resting all of your hope of salvation in. Believing
in nothing else but him, hoping in nothing else but him, knowing
who Jesus Christ is by grace is salvation. If you know who
he is, it's because he's revealed it to you. That's not something
we can find out by examining scripture. It's not something
we can find out by memorizing verses, knowing who he is. Seeing
him as God, we will see ourself as the chief of sinners and will
plead for nothing but the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. We've
been made to believe. See, Jesus Christ is the immutable.
You know what that word immutable means? It means he cannot change.
He's also unchangeable. Not only can he not, but Well,
I guess that's saying the same thing over, isn't it? He can't
change. He's immutable. He cannot change and you and
I can't change him. That's the point. He's immutable.
He's unchangeable. He's everlasting. The everlasting
savior of his people. If we're to see him, it's gotta
be through the eyes of faith. And where does faith come from?
Him. Who gets all the glory for it?
He does. What does faith always look to?
Him. The one that is the The one that
is heir to everything. When we see him, we see that
not one attribute can be compromised. He is God. Nothing can be taken
away from who he is or what he's done. Nothing can be added to
salvation. Nothing can be taken away from
salvation. I have a very weak analogy that I heard recently,
but it's fitting for the point I'm trying to make. The Mona
Lisa, I think the painting is probably the most, people see
it, most people know what that is. Most people, when they go
to, they see the Mona Lisa, wherever it pops up at, they're like,
I know what that is, I've seen that before. It's a very famous
painting. Now, I'm not, artistic very much,
but the insult to the painter would be for me to go with my
little box of crayons and try to add to the Mona Lisa. What
kind of an insult would that be? And then say, oh, it's better
now. Better now, like I draw a mustache
on it or something, and it's pink, and I think, well, that's
better. I did a good job. Look what I've done. I've added
to this work. That's a weak analogy compared
to the sovereign creator of the universe and what he did in salvation.
How great of an insult would it be for us to add one thing
to it? We don't even have a box of crayons to add anything to
it. You understand what I'm saying? We're dead. But men think I can add
something to that. Oh, the Lord created. The Lord
sustains, the Lord accomplished salvation. I can't add to that.
We don't want to, do we? Not if we've seen God, not if
we've seen Jesus Christ as the one that's heir of all things,
not if we've seen him seated in the heavens. I don't want
to add one thing to it. I don't want to take away one
thing from it because if I do, I know that that is iniquity
and the Lord marks. Lord, purge me with hyssop and
I shall be clean. I can't purge myself. Lord, wash
me in the blood and I'll be made whiter than snow. I can't wash
myself. If I'm left to myself, I'll think I have a box of crayons
to add to the finished work. Lord, don't let me do that. He's
God. Not one attribute can be compromised.
Nothing can be added to him. He's God. Nothing can be taken
away from his work. He's God. He's God. He doesn't require one thing
from you and I. He's God. Everything required,
He must provide, and He did in the Lord Jesus Christ. He's God.
Doesn't need my help, doesn't need your help. He's God. He's
the successful Redeemer when He by Himself purged our sin. I didn't have anything to do
with that, did you? No, we weren't even born. And all those that
were present had nothing to do with it either. No one could
add to or take away. Jesus Christ was doing business
with God. He was offering himself up to
the Father in that moment in time. Because the Father was
well pleased, he was raised because of our justification. The Lord's
people have been justified. There's nothing we can add to
justification. Nothing we can add to perfection. Nothing we
can add to perfect redemption. Nothing to be added to it. Everything else besides our Lord
is just a lie. He is the truth. He is all truth. There's no other message unto
salvation. There's no other name given but the name Jesus Christ,
whereby we must be saved. There's no other hope that we
have but in his name, in his blood. He is the way. He is the
truth. That's what we heard last Sunday,
the truth of the Lord. He's the message and the messenger. He gets all the glory. He gets
all the glory. The message never changes, does
it? We don't want it to change. No, the flesh wants to hear something
new. We talked recently, I made this statement. If we ate the
same thing every day, three times a day, we'd get really tired
of it. That's your visual. Grumble and complain and we're
no different than they are in the flesh. Grumble and complain
about angels' food. Think about that. How arrogant
we are in our flesh and prideful and selfish, self-centered. And
yet the new man wants one thing. Lord, I've got to have more manna.
I've got to have one more drink of the fountain of living water.
Truth, Lord, you're the heir. Can I be a doormat in glory? Can I just, I just want to be
there with you. I just want to, what did John
say? I'm not worthy to unlatch his shoelaces. That's where,
not his shoes, his sandals, his latches. Shoelaces wasn't invented
back then, but you understand what I'm saying? We're not worthy
to touch his feet. Not worthy to touch his feet. Peter thought
he would tell the Lord that. He said, Lord, I don't want you
to wash my feet. And the Lord said, if I don't wash your feet, you have
no part with me. And Peter said, not just my feet, then my hands
and my head. Lord, whatever it is you say is truth. And we bow
to it. You're the one that's been appointed
heir to all things, not me. My inheritance is filthy rags.
My inheritance is death. My inheritance is eternal damnation
and hell. Lord, give me Christ. Lord calls
him to be my inheritance. There's hope. There's hope. That's
what he's done for his people. That's why Paul said he purposed
to know nothing among those who he was preaching to save Jesus
Christ and him crucified. I can get up here and I could
tell you stories of my life. I could tell you stories of somebody
else's life. I could be theatrical and tell
you about enduring hardships and having trials that we deal
with and how we overcome that by doing this and doing that.
We have one thing needful, not to hear about each other, not
to hear about me, to hear about him. He's the one thing needful. Now God appointed Jesus Christ
heir of all things. Why did he do that? Why? Why did he appoint Jesus Christ
heir of all things? Well, he clarifies the reasoning
in the previous verse. Turn back with Hebrews, turn
back with me to Hebrews one. It's not the previous verse,
it's the previous part of the sentence. It says, hath in these
last days, verse two, spoken unto us by, see that word his,
it's in italics, spoke by his son, by son, that's his name,
one of his names, whom he hath appointed heir. Why would he
appointed heir? Because of who he was, because
of his blood. because of his his isness as
being God manifests in the flesh. That's why he was made heir.
Everything that we have as an inheritance is based completely
upon someone else. Our inheritance doesn't come
by what we do. It becomes because of who our
family is, who our father is, who earned that inheritance. We're not just born. and then
earn an inheritance without knowing anybody. And that's not an inheritance. That's something we earned. We
see that. But the Lord Jesus Christ, when he was born, he
inherited everything of his father because of who he is. I love
the thought that you and I are created, but he was never created.
I don't know how to explain that, but we believe it. He was eternal.
He was with God. The scripture says the word was
made flesh, but before that the word was with God. Then the word
was made, the Lord Jesus Christ was made flesh. So you and I
are created and then we inherit because we're finally born. Christ
Jesus was heir of everything before he even became a man.
Think about that. In glory, before time ever began. And the Lord by him made the
world and all things that are in the world. This is far too
wonderful for us to understand, but we believe it because we
know by faith he's God. He's God. He's called God's only begotten
son, the only one born heir. Born heir is the only one well
pleasing of his father. You remember on the Mount of
Transfiguration, Peter, James and John went with the Lord on
top of the mountain and scripture says that the Lord unveiled, if you want to put
it that way, His flesh and His glory shone forth. The Lord Jesus
Christ, it was a brightness as a noonday sun, the scripture
talks about, and they all fell down. And we see Moses and Elijah
that came, and that represents the law and the prophets. We
know that that's a picture of that. And we hear the words come
from glory. Let's see, and the Lord said,
this is my beloved son, hear ye him. Lord's not gonna speak any other
way. He's gonna speak by the one who is the eternal heir of
all things. He's gonna speak by his son,
that's it. That's the only way he's gonna speak, hear him. And
if he says hear him to the heart, there's hope. There's hope because
we've heard his voice. He chose to speak. He's God's son by nature. He's
Lord by birth. He's born King of Kings. Therefore,
he inherited all things of his father. I love the thought that
every office that God holds, the Lord Jesus Christ holds because
he's God. Now, oftentimes we talk about
this, and I wanna be very clear on what we preach and what we
believe. We preach very, very clearly the three distinct manifestations
of our God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. and none
of them contradict themselves, none of them usurp authority
over the other. As a matter of fact, we see the
Son as serving the Father all the time, but the Father highly
exalting Him. We see the Spirit never drawing
Himself attention, but yet pointing to the Son. We see perfect unity,
perfect oneness for these three, and thereby all three being one,
being one. Don't misunderstand, all three
are one. That's how the Lord accomplished salvation. Everyone
in their office, we see perfect oneness, but we see that the
Lord Jesus Christ is the one that successfully redeemed. He
is the one being born God, the fullness of the Godhead, the
fullness of the Godhead bodily redeemed his people. He had all the offices as God.
He had all the power as God, all the authority as God, not
because he was like God, but because he is God. All he can do is right because
of him, because of who he is, because of his blood is a sinless
nature, a perfect nature being God. He is truth. He is the fullness of truth. Now you and I. Men say exercise
free will. You ever heard that before? Exercise
your free will. There is no such thing as free
will. I got hung up on this the other
day whenever I was studying the Lord. I think I talked to somebody
about this Wednesday night after service or maybe last Sunday.
I can't remember which. There's no such thing as free will. There's
no men. We don't have a free. will. Our will is bound to our nature. Think about that. We're a human.
That means we have human will. We're in the flesh. That means
we have fleshly will. It's bound to our nature. And
I say this with absolute reverence, absolute fear. With that being said, God doesn't
have a free will in that sense. He cannot lie. He cannot lie. He's bound to his nature as completely
sovereign, completely omnipotent. None of his attributes can be
compromised because of who he is. He is eternal. I think you
understand what I'm saying. God cannot contradict himself. And you and I, Being in the flesh
cannot do anything spiritual, that's the point. We can't do
anything good because our nature, but he can't do anything bad
because of his. Do we see the difference? The most amazing
part is he chose to become, we're gonna hear this the second hour,
chose to become the creature, chose to become born a man. Him
that was the one that by right was heir of all things, chose
to lay down his life freely for his people, freely for his people. You and I were born in sin, shapen
into iniquity. We're heirs of death. He was
born in righteousness. He was shapen in holiness. He
is life. He is life. He is eternal life.
Jesus Christ was born, but he was never created. He's always
been. He's always been. You and I, men, mankind, we create
God in some kind of fashion, some kind of form in our mind.
God was not created. He's always been. I don't, and
truly it comes down to the Lord giving faith to believe in God. There's no way we can calculate
and compute and come up with, okay, people say there's a higher
being, but unless he shows who he is, we'll never believe Jesus
Christ was God. It's not possible. From eternity, and I'm coming
to a close, but I wanna say this, very important, I finished this
part, very important. From eternity, all things were
charged to the son. He inherited all things, but
all things were charged to him. All things were committed to
his keeping. All things were trusted to his
power. All things were given unto his
authority that he might redeem. See, the father laid upon the
son, the obligation, the responsibility. When the son agreed in the covenant
of grace that he would redeem his people, he, uh, it was at
that point in eternity where if the son failed, God was not
just in the justifier. If the son failed, no one is
saved. If the son failed, there is no
salvation. But the good news about him being
unchangeable, immutable, being eternal, being everlasting, he
cannot fail, could not fail. It's not possible. That's what
I meant earlier by being bound to his nature. He can't, it's
impossible for him to fail, for him to fail. He was given the
responsibility to ensure that God would be just and the justifier. And do you know what God is?
He's just and the justifier because of the precious blood of the
Lord Jesus Christ. The one that is heir of all things has caused
his people to be saved from their sin by the sacrifice of himself. Was it an attempt? Not for a
moment. Was it a try? Not even for a
second. He could not fail. He's all-powerful. Scripture
says His ways are not our ways. The older I get, the more I'm,
we believe that more and more, don't we? Every time we think
we have something, some understanding of somewhat, the Lord just allows
us to fall flat on our face and we have the same cry, Lord save
me, I thought again, I shouldn't have done that. He picks us up,
I see that you're God and I'm not again. I don't know why I
keep doing that, I know why. It's my unbelief, it's my own
flesh. Lord, save me. Lord, save me. You're the creator.
You are the one by right, our heir of all things, not me. John
3 says, the father loveth the son and hath given all things
into his hands. The father loveth the son and
hath given all things into his hands. What does all things mean? It's gospel simple, isn't it? All things. There's nothing left
that's not His, all things. He's God and He owns all things. Even the creation of the world
was given to the Son. Jesus Christ is the only rightful
heir. You and I deserve nothing but
damnation, but by right, by right, He is the heir to the very throne
of God. by His blood, by His sacrifice,
we are made the righteousness of God in Him. Now I want to
show you, I said in closing, and this is the last place I
want to turn, very briefly, Romans chapter 8. Romans chapter 8. This is what the Lord has done.
Being who He was, being the heir of all things, this is what He's
done for His people. Look in Romans chapter 8. Romans 8, 14, for as many as
are led by the spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For
you have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear that
you have received the spirit of adoption whereby we cry, Abba,
Father. The spirit itself beareth witness
with our spirit that we are the children of God. Now look what
Christ did for his people in verse 17. If children, then heirs. Heirs of God and joint heirs
with Christ. If so be that we suffer with
him, that we may be also glorified together. We're heirs of God
and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. Because on the cross of Calvary,
when the Lord died, he took our place so that we would be made
the righteousness of God in him. Being heir, what would, the Lord
delivered him up. The Lord spared not his own son,
the scripture says. How shall he not with him also
freely give us all things? We just said he owns all things.
But if he spared not his own son, delivered him up freely
for us all, for his people, how shall he not also with him freely
give his people all things in him? Brethren, we're heirs of
God and join heirs with Jesus Christ because of what he has
done. The heir of all things has made
us heir in him, heir with him. Scripture says that he saved
us to an inheritance, incorruptible and undefiled, and that fadeth
not away. Who else can that be but the
Lord Jesus Christ? That's our inheritance. That's more than
enough, isn't it? I want him. That's all we want,
isn't it? I just want him. And whatever he owns, he owns
it all. It's not whatever he owns, he
owns it all. And he says, I'm gonna freely give it to you by
my own blood. Isn't that amazing? Let's pray. Father, thank you. Our hearts
rejoice, Lord, in your simple truth. You by right are heir. And you by your blood have made
your people heirs with you. Cause us to rest and fear not
as the scripture just said. You've not given us the spirit
of fear, not of wrath, but you've given us peace with you by the
sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. Cause us to rest in his name.
Amen. Let's take a break.
