Psalm 62:1-12
Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.
2 He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.
3 How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence.
4 They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah.
5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.
7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.
8 ¶ Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.
9 Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.
10 Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.
11 God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.
12 Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to his work.
Summary
The sermon titled "The Blessed Only Psalm" by Tom Harding centers on the theological theme of Christ as the only source of salvation, elaborated through a detailed examination of Psalm 62. Harding emphasizes the repetition of the word "only" throughout the Psalm to highlight the exclusivity of God as the sole object of faith and trust. He discusses how verses one and five express a profound acknowledgment of waiting upon God alone for salvation, linking this to the broader Messianic interpretation of the Psalms as foretelling Christ (Luke 24:44). By analyzing sections of the Psalm, he argues for the significance of Christ's sufficiency as the foundation of salvation and the believer's security in Him, drawing upon other Scriptures such as Psalm 18 and Romans 8 to affirm God's sovereignty and mercy as well as Christ's role as the believer's advocate. The practical significance of this teaching encourages believers to trust solely in Christ in all aspects of life and to recognize the futility of trusting in human power or riches.

Psalm 62 this evening, and we'll
try to do a verse-by-verse study in Psalm 62. I'm entitling the
message from Psalm 62 from the word that's repeated five times. It's the word only. Only. I was in a Bible conference several
years ago, and I was asked to read some scripture And they
left it up to me to choose what to read. And I told everybody
when I got up to read, I said, turn to the only psalm. Everybody looked at me like,
there's 150 psalms, you know. I said, turn to the only one.
The only psalm. That's Psalm 62. I had to tell
them, Psalm 62, but it's the only psalm. The only psalm. So that'll be the title of the
message, that word only. is mentioned five times because
that word truly is rendered also in verse one, only, only, only. There's just one way of salvation. There's only one savior. There's only one righteousness. There's only one way God saves
sinners. Only one. And that's Christ alone. Christ and him crucified alone.
Now this psalm has been one of my favorite for many years. I
preached from this psalm several times and I hope to be able to
bring a study from this psalm again this evening. And I pray for you and for me. I pray the
Lord will bless his word to our heart, to our heart, to your
heart and my heart. You know, it's a blessing to
preach the gospel when what you're preaching is a blessing to you,
a blessing to me. It blesses me to repeat the gospel,
and I trust you find it a blessing to you. And if God blesses us
to hear his word, not only in the ear, but in our heart, in
our understanding, and do so by the power of God the Holy
Spirit, we'll be able to worship God. and will be comforted in
this blessed gospel of Christ. You remember from Luke chapter
24 when the risen Lord assembled with his apostles before he ascended
back to glory, and he told them, all things must be fulfilled
which are written in the law of Moses, first five books of
the Bible, and in the prophets, Isaiah, Jeremiah, all the prophets,
to him give all the prophets witness. Remember he said Moses
wrote about Christ. He said Moses wrote about me.
The prophets wrote about Christ. And then he said in the Psalms,
all 150 Psalms are Messianic Psalms. They all point us to
the Lord Jesus Christ. They all tell us about Christ. He said in the law of Moses and
the prophet in the psalm concerning me. Then he opened their understanding
that they might understand the scriptures. I pray God would
do that for us. Wouldn't that be something? God
would open our understanding that we might see in the book
revealed the beauty and glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. I pray the Lord would do that
for us right now this evening. Now I'm going to group together
some of these Verses in Psalm 62. Look at verse 1 and verse
5. Truly my soul waiteth upon God. From him cometh my salvation. And then in verse 5, my soul,
my soul. Bless the Lord, O my soul. Truly
my soul, my heart, my spirit, wait thou only upon God. These blessings are worth waiting
for, aren't they not? For my expectation, any expectation
of blessings, mercy, grace that I have is from him, only, only
from him and him alone. Now, three things I see in these
two verses. First thing is this, upon whom
do we wait? Upon whom do we wait? He said,
I waiteth upon God. I waiteth upon God. God who is the almighty God,
God who is God, God who is truly God, as he says many times in
the book of Isaiah, I am God, beside me there is no other. The only just God and Savior.
And then he says, look, look to me. Upon whom do we wait? God who is truly God. God who
is almighty. God who is all powerful. Every
good gift and every perfect gift comes from God. He's worth waiting
upon, isn't he? In submission, bowing to his
will. He's the God of all providence.
God of all providence, of him and through him and to him are
all things. He's too wise to err, too holy to do wrong, shall
not the judge of all the earth do exactly what is right? And
everything he does, it's right. It's right. He always does the
things that are right. He's a God of all power, as it
says down in verse 11, that power belongs to God. Power doesn't
belong to men. Men think they have power, don't
they? These little tin horn dictators, they think they have power. They
don't have any power. You remember Pilate said, don't
you know I have, he said to the Lord, remember, don't you know
I have power over you? The Lord corrected him, didn't
he? You don't have any power over me, but that which God gives
you, he can give authority and he can withhold it too. He raises
them up and he puts them down according to his own sovereign
will and purpose. So he's a God of all providence.
He is a God of all power. Power belongs unto God. He is too strong to fail. You remember Isaiah 42, he cannot
fail. Behold my servant, my elect,
in whom my soul delighteth. God said he cannot fail. In everything
the Lord Jesus Christ undertook on our behalf as our surety,
he said, Father, I finished the work you gave me to do. I finished
the work. Did he fail? No. At Calvary's
tree, he said, it's finished. It's finished. Don't add anything
to his finished work. You can't. It's complete. It's done. He is a God of all
mercy. He's a God of all grace. And
it says there in verse 12, O Lord, unto thee, O Lord, belongeth
mercy. Mercy belongs to the Lord. Power belongs to the Lord. Put
those two together and you have sovereign mercy, don't you? I'll
have mercy on whom I will. He's a God of all grace. Blessed
be the God, even the Father, by Lord Jesus Christ, who is
the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. Father of
mercies and the God of all comfort. Peter called him the God of all
grace in 1 Peter 5, who had called us unto his eternal glory by
Jesus Christ. He's a God of all grace, God
of all comfort, the Father of mercies. Now, that's upon whom
we wait. Upon whom do we wait? Upon Almighty
God. How do we wait? Truly, truly
we wait upon God. We only wait upon Him. We wait
upon Him with sincerity of heart, submission to His will. We wait
silently, resigned and surrendered to His will. Wait upon the Lord. Hold your place there and turn
back to Psalm 27. Psalm 27. You remember this verse?
Psalm 27. Look at verse 13. Psalm 27, 13, I had fainted unless
I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the
living. Wait on the Lord, be of good
courage, He'll strengthen mine heart. Wait, I say, what? Upon the Lord. Wait, wait, wait
upon the Lord. He teaches us to wait, to wait
upon Him. In Psalm 40, verse one, David
said, I waited patiently for the Lord, and He inclined unto
me and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of
a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, set my feet upon a rock,
established my goings. He put a new song in my mouth.
Psalm 40, verse three, even praising to our God, many shall see it
in fear and trust in the Lord. I waited patiently for the Lord.
How did we wait? with sincerity of heart, silently
resigned to his will. He taught us to pray, didn't
he? Not my will, but thy will be done. Thy will be done. Now, what do we wait for? Upon
whom do we wait? How do we wait? What do we wait
for? Well, look at verse 5. My soul,
wait thou only, only upon God, For my expectation is from Him. From Him, verse 1, cometh my
salvation. Now, who needs salvation? Sinners. Guilty sinners, they need salvation.
What do we wait for? From Him cometh my salvation. All my expectation of all spiritual
blessings are all found in Him. He blessed us with all spiritual
blessings in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus. Of His fullness,
remember, of His fullness have we all received grace for grace. The reason for grace is grace.
Of His fullness have we all received grace for grace. My expectation
is from Him. All expectation of hope is from
Him. We have a good hope through grace
in our Lord Jesus Christ. And in this word salvation, it's
given four times here in this psalm. Salvation, verse one,
verse two, and verse seven. My salvation, our deliverance,
our deliverance. Salvation, deliverance from sin,
from condemnation. There is therefore now no condemnation
to those who are in Christ. And we see once again that salvation
is of the Lord. It's of the Lord in his doing.
He's the author and finisher of our salvation. Salvation's
of the Lord. He's the beginning of it, he's
the end of it. It's all of him. Find over here Psalm 118. Can
you turn over there, Psalm 118? Look at verse 21. Psalm 118, verse 21. I will praise thee for thou hast
heard me and become my salvation. The stone which the builders
refused has become the headstone of the corner. He's a rock of
ages. This is the Lord's doing, and
it's marvelous in our eyes. I love that statement, verse
23. It's the Lord's doing. It's marvelous in our eyes. This
is the day which he hath made. We will rejoice, and we'll be
glad in it. This is the Lord's doing. Salvation's
all of God. God who hath begun a good work
in you, he will finish it. He never starts a project and
ends without finishing it. Every project, every object of
mercy, when he starts that work of grace in your heart, he'll
finish it, he'll continue it till he comes back for us. Now
look at verse two and verse six. Verse 2 and verse 6, now, He
only is my rock. He only is my salvation. There
is no other Savior. There is no other foundation. He is my defense. I shall not
be greatly moved. Verse 6, He only is my rock,
my salvation, and my defense. I shall not be moved. Now, hold
your place there again and turn over here to Psalm Psalm 18 this
time. Psalm 18. Look at verse 1. Psalm 18 verse
1. He's my rock, my salvation, my
righteousness, my all. But look at Psalm 18 verse 1
and 2. I will love thee, O Lord, my
strength. He's my strength. The Lord is my rock. He's my
fortress. He's my deliverer. He's my God. He's my strength. I trust him. He's my buckler. He's the power,
that word horn, is the power of my salvation. He's my high
tower. I'll call upon him. I'll call
upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised. So shall I be saved
from my enemies. He's my all and end all. Didn't Paul write that? Where'd
he write that at? Christ is all in all. Colossians
chapter 3, isn't it? Verse 11, Christ is all and in
all. He's my all. He's my all. David said over here, don't turn,
look back at Psalm 62. But in Psalm 27, he said, the
Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The Lord is
the strength of my life. And whom shall I be afraid? It
sounds to me like David's putting his whole total confidence in
the Lord Jesus Christ alone. All in him alone. He only is
my rock. Christ is the sum and substance
of salvation. He's the sum of it, he's the
substance of it, he's the subject of it, isn't he? He's a teacher,
he's a lesson. And then he, Christ, is the rock,
my only, the only rock. He's my salvation. He's my foundation,
the rock. You don't build on the... You
remember in our study in the book of Matthew about the man
who built his house on the sand and the wind and the storm came
and washed away the house because it's built on the sand. Don't
build your hope of salvation on the sand of your works. Build
the hope of your salvation on Christ, the solid rock I stand,
all other ground is sinking. Christ is a rock. Christ is a
rock. He alone is a rock. Look over
here at one page. Turn back to Psalm 61 verse 2. I like this. Look at Psalm 61
verse 2. From the ends of the earth will
I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the
rock that's higher than I. Lead me to that rock. Lead me
to that rock. And we know the Lord Jesus Christ
said there in Matthew 16, we'll see that in a few weeks in our
study through Matthew. He said, upon this rock I'll
build my church and the gates of hell I cannot prevail against
my church because it's built upon Christ. That's why he said,
I shall not be greatly moved. And then he grows in confidence
and he says, I shall not be moved. Now, the believer is fastened
to the rock, the Lord Jesus Christ. To move the believer, you got
to move the rock. Because that believer is one with the rock.
The foundation and the believer resting on that foundation, we
are one in Christ. And to move us, you've got to
move that rock. That's not going to happen. No puny, frail creature can move
the rock, the rock of ages, the Lord Jesus Christ. He's the only
one in foundation. He's the only one and the only
foundation upon which sinners can safely rest upon that rock. This is a rock that, remember
he said, behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation, a stone, that
rock, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation. Those who believe on him will
never be forced out. I shall not be moved. You see,
you remember over in Hebrews chapter 6 when it talked about
our forerunner who was entered into the heavenlies and he's
called the anchor of our soul. The anchor of our soul. Now some
of you I've probably been out on a boat of some kind, and when
you want to stay put, you cast the anchor, don't you? Those
big battleships and aircraft carriers, they have a huge, huge
anchor, and they drop that anchor, and that anchor holds that ship.
It may be moved a little bit, but it's not greatly moved, is
it? Christ is that anchor. And because we're anchored to
the Lord Jesus Christ, we cannot be moved. Christ is the only
Savior. He said, Thomas said, show us the way. Have I been so long time with
you? I am the way, he said. I am the truth. I am, I am life. I love what Peter and John said
to those Pharisees who asked by, remember they healed that
man who was crippled in the temple? And they said, by whose name
and by what power have you done this miracle? And they said,
in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we've done this. Neither is there salvation in
any other name than the Lord Jesus Christ. Salvation is in
Him alone. The whole of our salvation is
of the Lord. It's of the Lord and it's planning.
Who planned this thing of salvation? The Lord Jesus Christ was the
Lamb slain before Adam ever sinned. The Lord Jesus Christ stood as
a surety of that covenant. He's the Lamb slain, went from
the foundation of the world, Salvation is of the Lord and
His planning. Salvation is certainly of the Lord and His performance,
isn't it? You remember Psalm 57 verse 2, where it says, He
performed all things for us. Well, that's good news, isn't
it? And then salvation is of the Lord and His purchase. Well,
He bought us with His own blood. He paid our sin debt, and He
bought us lock, stock, and barrel, body, soul, and spirit. He redeemed
us all. He delivered us. And in salvation
of the Lord and His perfection. You know, one day, we're gonna
have a body, a perfect body, a glorified, risen body, just
like the Lord Jesus Christ. He's gonna change our vile body
and fashion it like unto His glorious body. That's what predestination's
all about. Predestination is God determining
to have a people just like the Lord Jesus Christ. We are predestined
to be conformed to the image of Christ. Man said, well, I
don't believe in predestination. You don't want to be like Christ?
Who do you want to be like? Every time that's mentioned,
four times in the Bible, that word predestination, it always
has to do with God taking a sinful people and making them just like
Christ. He's decreed it. He's ordained
it. He's going to bring to pass whom
He justified, those He also glorified. Christ alone is our defense. You see that in verse 2? He is
our defense. Therefore, I shall not be moved.
What better defense could we present against the charges of
the law against us and all the condemnation of sin against us?
What better defense could we present than the Lord Jesus Christ
took our sin and took them away? He appeared once in the end of
age to put away sin. by the sacrifice of Himself.
The Lord Jesus Christ is called my Advocate. When you sin, we have an Advocate
with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous. The Lord Jesus
Christ is called our Mediator. You wouldn't dare go over here
to court, to the circuit court or district court and stand before
the judge without Advocate without a mediator, would you? Well,
I'm just going to go represent myself. That ain't going to work.
You got to have an advocate. You got to have a mediator. You
got to have an intercessor, even over here in the courthouse. What about before the throne
of Almighty God? You better have a right mediator.
You better have a right advocate. And we do, and that is the Lord
Jesus Christ. You know what he pleads before
the throne of God? He doesn't plead our righteousness,
he pleads his. That's good news, isn't it? He
pleads his justifying blood to put away their sin. He's not
guilty! I took his sin, I took his guilt,
turned him loose. He's redeemed us from the curse
of the law, being made a curse for us. That's good defense,
isn't it? We have the best defense lawyer ever, who can lay anything
to the charge of God's elect. It is God that justifies, who
is he that condemneth. It's Christ who's already died,
who's risen again from the dead. He's seated at the right hand
of God. He ever lived to intercede for us. The believer resting
in the Lord Jesus Christ cannot be charged with sin. Did you
know that? He's imputed unto us a perfect
righteousness, but He's also made it so much so that our sin
can no longer be imputed to us. There's a non-imputation of sin. Did you know that? Look over
here at Psalm 32. Remember Psalm 32? Oh, Psalm 32, verse 1. Psalm
32, verse 1. Blessed is he whose transgression
is forgiven, whose sin is covered. What are you covered with? What's
your sin covered with? The garments of salvation, the
robe of righteousness, his blood puts away all our sin. Blessed
is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity. in whose spirit there is no God.
God's not going to charge you with sin because he's already
charged our sin to our substitute. The old songwriter, the old hymn
writer, the old preacher said, God's justice can't twice demand
at my bleeding surety's hand and then again at mine. They
make him unjust. The laws of the state of Kentucky
can only execute a criminal for capital murder, how many times? One time. And when that law is
satisfied, how many times is that law going to kill that man?
It'll kill him one time. After that, the law has no claim
on him. It's the law of God. We've been executed in Christ.
When he died, we died. When he satisfied the law, we
did. Now the law of God has no claim against us. We're already
dead, crucified with Christ. Isn't that good news? Now, the
believer trusting Christ can never be disowned as a son of
God, can never perish, can never be removed from Him because we're
one with Him. Think about this. When He ascended
on high and sat down, we sat down in Him. Now, kick a believer
out of the kingdom of God, you're gonna throw the Son of God off
the throne. That ain't gonna happen, is it? All that the Father
giveth to me shall come to me and those that come to me, I'll
never cast them out. You talk about security. In Christ,
we have security, eternal security. He said, I give my sheep eternal
life and they'll never perish. They'll never perish, never perish.
Now, in verse three and verse four, and I'll just go over this
quickly, David had his enemies, didn't he? The greater David,
the Lord Jesus Christ, had his enemies. How long will you imagine,
imagine mischief against a man? You remember all the horrible
things they said about the Lord Jesus Christ? A wine-dibber,
a gluttonous man. He's a friend of sinners. You
shall be slain, all of you. You don't want to stand against
God Almighty because judgment's coming. You imagine mischief
against God's people? You shall be slain. You shall
fall down like a bowling wall at a tottering fence. Remember
Psalm 110, where the Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand
till I make thine enemies to bow at your footstool. Every
knee will bow, every tongue will confess Jesus Christ is Lord.
They only consult to cast him down from his excellency. They
delight in lies, they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly,
don't they? The enemies of the gospel are
real, but they're defeated and they're marked for destruction.
as a bowing wall, as a tottering fence, in due time their foot
will slide into eternal ruin, into eternal ruin. The Lord shall
have them in derision. Don't turn, but let me just,
let me read this to you. Remember Psalm number two, the
heathen rage and the people imagine a vain thing. The kings of the
earth set themselves together, rulers take counsel together
against the Lord, against his Christ, saying, let us break
their bands of thunder and cast away their cords from us. Psalm 2 verse 4, he that sitteth
in the heavens shall laugh. The Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them
in his wrath and vex them. in his sore displeasure. The
enemies of the gospel and the enemies of the Lord Jesus Christ
are defeated and we have the victory in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is our excellency and the
enemies of the gospel, they want to cast us down from trusting
our excellency, the Lord Jesus Christ. The enemies of the gospel,
they delight in lies. Now think about this. I thought
about this today. Why would a man, why would a sinful religious
man, why would they delight in a lie? Why would they delight in a lie? They think it's the truth. That's
why they delight in a lie. They think it's the truth. You
remember who's the father of lies? That's Satan himself. Abraham
is our father. You are your father. You are
your father. He said to those Pharisees, the
devil. He's a liar from the beginning. He's the father of lies. Oh,
they say religious things with their mouth, but inwardly, they
curse inwardly. Now, what are we to do? Verse
seven. He goes right back to my salvation. You see verse 7,
in God is my salvation. He's my glory. The glory of our
salvation is Christ. God forbid we should glory, save
in the death of the Lord Jesus Christ. In God is my salvation,
in God is my glory. The salvation of the Lord gives
all the glory for salvation unto Christ. He is my glory. He is my excellency. He's a rock
of my strength. He is my strength. He is my refuge. It's not a refuge of lies. It's
a refuge of truth. In Christ we have this glorious,
glorious refuge. Salvation is not only from Him,
but salvation and all spiritual blessings are found in Him. In God is my salvation, my glory,
the rock of my strength, and my refuge is in Him. Whatever salvation is, I think
I know what it is. But whatever salvation is, it's
in Him. That's why Paul said, I count
everything else lost, dung, and ruined, that I may win Christ
and be found in Him. Now, that being so, that salvation
is in Him, What would you do? Look at verse
8. Trust in Him. Trust in Him. Most of the time,
I'm going to trust Him. No, it doesn't say that, does
it? Trust in Him at all times. You people. He's talking about
sons of God. The people of God. The elect
of God. Trust in Him at all times, you
people. Pour out your heart before Him. We read through the Psalms
and David just pours out his heart before the Lord. This pours
out his heart. This unbears his heart before
the Lord. Lord, hear my cry. Trust in Him at all times, ye
people. Pour out your heart before Him. God is. He is a refuge for
us. God is our refuge. Our refuge at all times. In Christ
we hide. He is our refuge. trusting him
at all times, saying that our God is the only refuge given
and the only refuge provided, it would be utter foolishness
to trust something else or someone else, wouldn't it? You know it would be. It is Christ
alone, nothing more, nothing less, and nothing else. Christ
alone, Christ alone. Trust in Him at all times, you
people. Pour out your heart. God is for
us. If He be for us, who can be against
us? If He's for us, in times of plenty or times of
poverty. In times of loneliness or times
of fellowship, in times of sickness or in health, Christ is still
our refuge and our salvation. In good times, in bad times,
trust Him at all times. You got the point? Proverbs chapter 3 says, trust
in the Lord with all thine heart, lean not to thy own understanding,
in all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall Bless thy path. He'll lead thee in the right
path. Trusting Him at all times. You can't go wrong trusting Him.
You can't go wrong believing His Word. Relying upon Christ. And pour out your heart before
Him. His heart is fixed upon us. May God be pleased to fix
our heart upon Him. Set our affections upon Him.
Now verse 9 and 10, He told us what not to trust. It's good
to know what something is not, right? He tells us to trust him
and then he said, here's what you're not to trust. Surely men
of low degree are vanity. Men in his best state are vanity. Surely you would say the homeless
drug addict. Men of low degree, vanity, vanity. But men of high degree, they're
just a lie. The man that lives up on the
hilltop in the mansion, he's just a lie. Men of low degree, men of high
degree, they're all vanity. To be laid in the balance, you
remember them old scales where you'd have that pinnacle pivot
point and you'd put? To be laid in the balance, they're
all together lighter than vanity. You remember over in Isaiah 40,
he says, when he talks about the nations, all he said, the
nations are but a, he said, behold, the nations are of a drop of
a bucket. All the nations are a drop of
a bucket. That's a little drop of water
off the end of a bucket. And Canada is a small dust of
the balance. He taketh up the idol as a very
little thing. Lebanon is not sufficient to
burn, nor the beasts there are sufficient to burn. All nations
before him are as nothing. They are counted to him less
than nothing vanity. To be weighed into balance, they
don't have any weight. They're zero. They're zero. And then it says, verse 10, trust
not in oppression, Don't trust in poverty. Just because a man
is poor doesn't mean that he's humbled. You can be a proud poor
man. Trust not in oppression. Become
not vain in robbery. If riches increase, don't trust
your poverty or your plenty. Trust Christ. Trust in him at
all times. If riches do increase, well,
don't set your heart upon him. There's nothing wrong with having
riches. The problem is when riches have
you, that's the problem. Trust not in riches. Trust not
in riches. You know, I tell you this story,
a homely story, but my mother grew up in Holland. He was born
in 1928. And you know what happened in
1939, the German Army came in there and devastated that whole
country, all them countries around there, Belgium, Denmark, Holland,
all those countries. And my mother grew up in poverty. She lived in poverty. She had
15 children in her family. My mother tells about going out
as children trying to steal eggs just to get something to eat.
She just lived in poverty. Well, she immigrated to this
country in 1948. And you know what she thought about everybody
that lived in the United States? She thought that everyone here
was rich. And she couldn't wait to get
here. Little did she know, she married a poor dirt farmer in
Gooding, Idaho, my dad, who lived in poverty. She left poverty
and came here to poverty. If riches increase, don't set
your heart upon them. Riches are not the answer. These
people who If you want to buy a lottery
ticket, you go for it. I wouldn't buy a lottery ticket
for one reason. I'd be afraid that I'd win. If
you won a $500 million lottery, your life would be ruined. It
would be ruined. They've done a study on people
who won the big prize. Their life is just ruined. It's
wrecked. Trouble, heartache. They think
their troubles are over. Riches are not the answer. Righteousness
in Christ, that's the answer. God has spoken this once. That's
a blessing. God has spoken this once, twice.
Oh, for a blessing to hear the Lord speak not once but twice
and to have a desire to hear more of Him that all power All
power, all authority, all dominion, all sovereignty belongs to somebody,
belongs to God. You remember Psalm 135? Whatsoever
the Lord pleased, that did he in heaven, earth, sea, and all
deep places. Power belongs to God. The gospel's
the power of God and the salvation. But also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth
mercy. It's of the Lord's mercies that
were not consumed. And you put power and mercy together,
what do you have? Sovereign mercy. He said, I will
have mercy on whom I will have mercy. I'll have compassion on
whom I will have compassion. Belongs, mercy belongs to the
Lord. He delights to show mercy. In
the last part of verse 12, It says there that God will render
to every man according just as he deserves, according to your
works, according to your works. He will reward those outside
of Christ with the wages of their sin, which is death, sin and
deserving of condemnation. The wages of sin is death, but
the gift of God is eternal life. He will also reward those in
Christ with the merit of His doing, His work, His righteousness,
His doing and His dying with a reward of eternal mercy in
Christ Jesus. He is our reward. He's our exceeding
great reward in Christ Jesus. He only. That's the only song. It's a good one, isn't it?

Pristine Grace functions as a digital library of preaching and teaching from many different men and ministries. I maintain a broad collection for research, study, and listening, and the presence of any preacher or message here should not be taken as a blanket endorsement of every doctrinal position expressed.
I publish my own convictions openly and without hesitation throughout this site and in my own preaching and writing. This archive is not a denominational clearinghouse. My aim in maintaining it is to preserve historic and contemporary preaching, encourage careful study, and above all direct readers and listeners to the person and work of Christ.
