you in this manner, we pray in Christ's name. Amen. so so Okay. so so do The Revelation of the Lord Jesus
Christ is precisely that. This book contains seven visions
given to John in the Isle of Palace. The last prophet or apostle to
God who received visions and was not of events and such, it
was a picture and setting forth the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ. I know in times like these, I
remember back in the days of the Cold War, when people were
afraid of nuclear bombs, people talked a great deal about Armageddon
back then. And things calmed down and that
wasn't much of a subject of preaching. Occasionally you'd hear that.
When things get bad, people seem to go to apocalyptic and that's
what the revelation, that's the word in the Greek language, it's
Apocalypse. It means the revelation, the
revealing. This book is a revealing of the
Lord Jesus Christ, but not so much in future events. I would
advise you not to get your newspaper, your magazine, and watch the
news and try to figure it out about this book, because that's
not going to help you at all, because you'll come up tall.
manner of strange and crazy ideas. The theme of this book, the theme
of this book is a compilation of seven visions revealed to
John concerning the person, the work of Christ, in the span of
time that is called the Gospel Age, which started when the Lord
Jesus Christ came to this world and took on the form of human
flesh and was found to be obedient even to the death of the cross,
that age stretches from that moment of his incarnation to
his second coming. That's the age we call the age
of the gospel, or the gospel age. It is the eternal record
of what Christ has done, this church book is. It is the eternal
record of what he is doing and what he shall do with his church. throughout this age called the
Gospel Age. And this book declares in no
uncertain terms that the church will be ultimately victorious
over the world, the flesh, and the devil. These seven visions
tell us some truth, the same truth over and over again. In
chapters one through three, we see Christ in the midst of his
church, In chapters 4-7, it records Christ opening the seventh sealed
book of God's sovereign purpose in
Christ on the earth. In chapters 8-11, it shows Christ
answering the prayers of His beleaguered church under persecution,
protecting them from their enemies. and vindicating them in the execution
of the seven judgments of providential rule against their enemies on
their behalf. Chapters 12-14 shows Christ and
his church persecuted by Satan, a religious world government
and false religion. Chapters 15-16 reveals Christ
sending his angels to pour out seven vials of wrath upon the
earth. Verses 7 and chapter 17 through
19 proclaims our Lord's conquest over Babylon, the beast and the
false prophet. And chapters 20 through 22 reveals
Christ's dominion over Satan, the destruction of Satan, the
glory of the new Jerusalem, which is the church, the mother of
us all. These visions cover the entire
gospel age. That's what they're about. They
take place in this time of coming of the Lord Jesus Christ to His
second coming. They are not different ages,
they are not different dispensations, and they are not different events
or prophetic events. They are all one thing. It's
about Christ and His Church, which is what the whole Bible
is about. This book begins very finally.
This is the revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ to John the
Baptist. on the Isle of Patmos. Now, in
what we've read today, these words begin the final vision
of Paul, the last vision he was given. This vision, in a true
sense, is a synopsis of the previous 19 chapters. This is the record
in one fell swoop of the events that transpired between the time
when our Lord entered this world in human flesh and the day of
His glorious triumphant return. These first three verses of chapter
20 are a record of the binding of Satan, accomplished by the
work of Christ in His coming to earth for the first time.
There is a clearly defined sequence of events. We'll read these verses. I saw an angel come down from
heaven, having the keys of the bottom of this pit and a great
chain in his hand. He laid hold of the dragon, the
old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, bound him a thousand
years and cast him into the bottom of this pit and shut him up and
set a seal upon him that he would deceive the nations no more until
the thousand years should be fulfilled. He must be loosed
for a little season. Loosed for a little season. First our Lord's entrance into
the world is followed by a long period of time. Here it's expressed
as a thousand years. That's a metaphorical expression.
The actual terminology is thousands of years. Literally thousands
of years. And those thousands of years
make up what we're living today called the Gospel Age. Secondly,
at the end of, or just prior to the end of this period of
time, however long it lasts, Satan is loosed for a short period
of time called a little season. And third, at the conclusion
of this little season, Christ comes again to judge the world
and to make all things new. And if you read this chapter,
unless you do so with some preconceived notion of eschatology, We will
see that the thousand years are not a millennial period that
begins when Christ comes again, but rather is a time that preceded
his second coming and ends with his second coming. The language
is symbolic. It says in the very first chapter
of this book, it shows you signs and symbols. For some reason,
people began to take these things literally. They are signs and
symbols. They are visions. They are visions. have metaphorical strength. The
language is symbolic and figurative and it's relative to Him who
is eternal. That's what the language is about. We look at these things in time,
but time to God has done many things. We know from 1 Peter
3 and verse 8 that a thousand years is just a day with God
and a day is a thousand years. In other words, there's no difference.
There's no difference with God. There's a big difference with
us, but not with God. Though this passage in 2 Peter
deals specifically with the surety of the coming judgment, it certainly
shows the relativity of time to eternity. A thousand years
is no more literal than the change that binds Satan. These are not
actual chains. The chains speak of the sovereign,
restraining power, and the thousand years speak of a long period
of time that we call the gospel age. If you make more than that,
you're burning yourself to death of things you don't know. That's
why people call eschatology, theories of eschatology, theories
of the second kind. Well, why don't we just read
the book like it says? Like it speaks. These first three
verses teach the absolute dominion of the Lord Jesus Christ. No
question there, over Satan. I know people think there's some
kind global war going on between God and Satan. Listen, Satan's
doing exactly as God intends him to do. He does what God pleases. The old Puritans used to call
him God's ape. He does what God, he must ask
permission to touch you. He must ask permission. Now God
may give him permission to abuse you for a while to bring you
to the feet of Christ. He did that with Peter. He did
that with Job. He gave him permission. He had
to ask permission. And God gave him permission to
do so. The first thing we see is the
purpose of our Lord coming into this world. It says he came to
buy and sell. And I saw an angel come down
from heaven and the keys from the bottom of his pit and a great
chain in his hand. He laid hold of the draught.
He came to find salvation. This must be done, He said. This
is an absolute, this cannot, we cannot be saved, but this
is done. This must be done. And when His elect be delivered
from their captivity, He who holds the keys to death and hell
is the only one who is able to bind the powerful enemy and the
accuser of the elect. He's the only one who's able
to do it. There is no salvation for God's people. say that satan
first came down that has to happen first that has to happen first
this is taught throughout the scripture it's taking place at
the time of our lord's first advent when he came into this
world the promise to the serpent was that a cedar woman would
bruise his head, and he would bruise his heel. That was the
promise to the serpent. That was speaking of the Lord
Jesus Christ in Genesis 3.15. It's called the Proto-Evangelium. In Hebrews chapter 2, verses
14-16, it says, Because the children were flesh and blood, he also
partook of the same, to come down here to the earth, to destroy
the works of the devil. Because of fear of death, they
feared him all their lives. Christ says in 1 John 3, verse
8, that he was manifest to destroy the works of Satan. That's what
he came to do. Our great Savior, the strong
one, as he's described in Matthew and in Luke, the strong one must
find the strong man, that's Satan, in order to loose him from his
bonds and take his keep must be done first. Throughout the
scriptures we've studied the Old Testament for many years
now we've found that this is a common practice. These two things always take
place in the deliverance of his people. The destruction of the
enemy and the deliverance of the people. This is the way it
has to happen. In fact the concept of salvation I know today it's
been watered down to mean hardly anything. People walk down an
aisle. People make a decision. They
use their will. They do this and do that if they're
saved. From what? To be saved means that you must
be in trouble to begin with. In order to be saved, you must
be captive. In order to be delivered, you
must be in chains somehow. That's salvation. And salvation
does not occur until the chains are broken, the fetters are cut
aside, and you are set free. Our great Savior, the strongest
man, has bound Satan and cast him into the bottomless pit where
he resides today. Our great adversary is described
in verse 2, he's found four ways, and he laid hold of the dragon.
Get a word Dracula from that. It means a dragon. and the old serpent, that's how
he's described, which is the devil and Satan. He's described in four ways here.
The word dragon symbolizes his ferocity and his rebellious nature
and his hatred against all things of God. He, by design and divine
permission, holds sway over the powers and minds of men. Scripture
says, apart from the elect, he takes men captive at his own
will. I know these clown preachers stand up and say we're going
to run Satan out of town. You best not mess with him. I
don't want to mess with him. I ain't going to study him. I
ain't going to try to figure out what he's doing. I'm going
to leave him to Christ, because he's the one who can handle him.
I can't handle Satan. He's handled people like us for
60 centuries. It's not a big deal. By design and divine permission,
he holds sway over men. He takes them captive. guns,
principalities, kings and magistrates of the world gladly and blindly
are his living poems. He uses them to persecute the
church. He has a massive confederation
that is always against God and his Christ, obeying so until
the day of Armageddon, and he's called the Old Serpent. He first
appeared to us in the Garden of Eden as the tempter of our
Mother Eve, He does not look like a snake. The actual words
are such a very bright, shining one. He appears as an angel of
light. His actions are like a slithering,
writhing, deceptive snake. He tempts people to bring them
down to hell. How does he do that? By making
them confident that they are bound for heaven. That's his deadly weapon. He's
not in the bars, and the bordellos, and the crack houses. He's in
the churches, standing in pulpits, looking good, convincing people
that if they do their best, they try real hard to be a good citizen,
and a good mom, and a good daddy, and an obedient child, that they're
set for glory. believe that and you'll perish
and go to hell with a bible in your hand and a hymn upon your
lips that's his job and he's good at it he's good at it The
employment of the old agent, the old servant ensures that
he is indeed the one who lied to you. He is also called the
devil. This identifies him as a liar
and a slanderer. Remember what our Lord said to
the Pharisees. He said, you are of your father the devil. He
was a liar from the beginning. And he's the father of lies. A liar and a slanderer. He slanders
the elect. He did that with Job. When the
Lord said, you see my servant? You see him? He loves good and
hates evil. He's a servant. It's a
holy man. There was a quill. He'd give
him everything. He served you for nothing. He
served you because you made him rich. give him ten children and
a hundred encounters, asses, all kinds of things. The Lord
said, well, take that away from him. Take that away from him. And he did. He allowed Satan
to take everything that Job had. He killed his ten children, took
all of his encounters. Job said, the Lord giveth and
the Lord taketh away. be the name of the Lord. He said, you see my servant Joe,
he still serves me. He still loves me. He said, if
you let me touch his body, let me make him sick. I'm going to
sleep. And he did. The Lord let him
make him, cover him with balls. His tendons were slanted. First
he said, God, He said, Joe's a god because
he's healthy. He's a slanderer. He slanders
the elect of God. He's a twisted pervert of the
gospel. He's called Satan. This identifies
him as the accuser. The accuser. He accuses God of
lying to the heathen. He says, God's not telling me
the whole truth. And if you eat of this fruit, you'll be like
Him. He doesn't care. He won't really care. He won't
really care. He accuses the gospel of heresy. He accuses the elect of God day
by day and night by night. He accuses our consciences of
sin in this world. This is His life. This is what
He does. This is His vocation. This is
His existence. and he is very good at his job. This says, the angel came down
from heaven with a chain and bound him, the dragon, the old
serpent, the devil, Satan, and cast him into a bottomless pit. Verses 2 and 3 say to be bound.
John saw the Lord come down with a key to the bottomless pit,
a great chain, and bind the devil. Find the devil. That's the language
that's been used. Look at chapter 9 of Revelation. It says, When the fifth angel
sounded, I saw a star fall from heaven, and to him was given
the key to the bottom of his pit. saw a star fall from heaven. That's how he described it. In verse 11, the same chapter
says that they sang, and they had a king over them which was
named of the bottomless pit. His name in the Hebrew tongue
is Abaddon, but in the Greek it's Apollyon. That speaks of
the devil. Chapter 11, verse 7, the same
chapter of the same book, it says that when they had finished
their testimony, The beast that ascended out of the bottomless
pit shall make war against them and shall overcome them and kill
them. This is the beast. This is the
beast. The bottomless pit is also figurative. It's also figurative language.
The sealing of Satan in that pit signifies the work of the
Lord Jesus Christ. The binding signifies the diminishing
of and control over Satan's ability to deceive the nations. I can't tell you how many times
over the years and in the last few years people have called
me a trove at these false teachings that are going around. They're
all over the place. There's a business of every teaching
that doesn't teach you. that Jesus Christ is the only
way to salvation. He alone is our salvation. It's
a false teaching. So there's plenty of it. And
I tell people, well, the elect aren't going to be deceived.
And they're not. That's the promise of Christ.
He said there's a counterfeit out there that if it were possible,
if it were possible, that means it's impossible. If it were possible,
it would deceive the elect. If it were possible. He said,
but I've shortened the days. There's an indication there from
last fall that they might be deceived. And I've shortened
the days. The elect will not be deceived.
That's why I preach the gospel, because I know they're going
to hear the gospel. They're going to believe the gospel. I don't
know that they are, but I know when the gospel is preached,
they will believe it. This finding is the reduction of Satan's influence. we've seen this Bible takes place
in a time called the Gospel Age, during that thousand years spoken
of here, the time between the Incarnation and the Second Advent
of Christ. Look at Matthew Chapter 12. Matthew Chapter 12, Verse 29
says this, But I cast out devils by the spirit of God and the
kingdom of God is coming to you. When I cast out devils, he said
he did it by the finger of God. I lifted one finger and cast
out demons. See, they had accused Christ
of being of the devil. He said, I cast them out by the
word of God. I cast them out on a bigger house
than my own against itself cannot stand. So if I was the devil,
destroyed the devil, that would make him. He said, I cast them out by the
power of my own hand. He cast them out. And if Satan casts out Satan,
he's about to get some children. So that language is the same
language used here in the revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ. The
word bind there and bound in chapter 20 and verse 1 of Revelation,
they're the same word. the same word, and both verses
describe the same being, Satan being back. That happened when
our Lord Jesus Christ went to Calvary. Christ first found Satan
in the wilderness of temptation when they triumphed over him
and sent him packing. If you read that account in Matthew
chapter 4, Luke chapter 4, and more, it was after what, 140
days of the wilderness of temptation by Satan, tested by Satan, You
look at how Satan tested me, very religious tested me. All
of it had to do with the same prophecies, exact same prophecies
that false religion offers me today. Our Lord rejected them,
sinning, packing. Our Lord said, Satan could find
nothing in me. Found nothing in me. When Satan
could find nothing in this man, his influence over men was immediately
injured. And Gethsemane, our Lord, again
wounded Satan and diminished his powers. Matthew 26, when
our Lord shed it, it was shed as it were great drops of blood.
When he wept, he said, Father, it would be impossible to lift
this cup fast from me. And Satan could find nothing
in him, our Lord, on that night in the fire of darkness. Satan
sought to keep our Lord from the cross, tormenting our Lord
with the aspect of being made sin. I can't imagine what that
was like for him. who was perfect, thought of being
made sin before God, even finally hearing Satan enter Judas, and
caused him to betray Christ according to God's predestinated purpose.
And after praying to his father, our Lord rose victorious today,
for which he is appointed, he left Yosemite in strength and
vigor and confidence according to the word of God. looking forward
to the cross looking forward to the cross Hebrews 12 verse
1 and 2 says looking at Jesus the author and finisher of our
faith and for the joy set before him endured the cross disregarding
and discounting the shame and has now set down the right hand
of the majesty on high Satan's influence was dealt a crippling
blow in Gethsemane. On the cross, our Lord bruised
the head of the serpent C. And that blow our Lord dealt
as he put his foot on the throat of the enemy is described as
casting out Satan. Our Lord spoke of it in that
kind of language in John chapter 12. When he spoke of the death,
he was about to die. John chapter 12 verse 27 says,
Now my soul is free, facing the cross. What shall I say? Father,
save me from this hour. But for this cause came I into
this world. Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice
from heaven saying, I have glorified it and will glorify it. And the
people there stood by and heard it said, Thunder. The others
said, An angel spoke to him. And Jesus answered and said,
This voice came not because of me, but for your sins. Now is
the judgment of this world. Now is the prince of this world. Cast out. Cast out. Now if I be lifted up and drawn
along into my sin, as he said, signify the death which he should
die. Satan's influence was severely
curtailed and caused pride. On the cursory tree, our Lord
suffered hell, that held you, us, that held you, every one
of Israel, and saved you from the fire of threat, and bid us
to minister to the end of the degree. And our Lord ascended
to the right hand of the majesty on high, and was exalted as King
of kings and Lord of lords. He says he led captivity. What
is captivity? Satan and his influence. He gave
gifts to men. What gifts? Gifts of faith. What
makes you different from another man? God has given you faith.
Old men have not faith. Here you are in this world of
chaos, darkness, guilt, degradation. Here you are calm and at ease.
Thanking the Lord every day. Rejoicing in Him. And the Lord
says, you're insane. You're insane. You belong in
a asylum somewhere. You need to be shut out. Now
we are at peace because Satan's influence has been severely damaged. He has given us repentance. We are able to see what we are
and know that nothing we do recommends us to God to repent of our sin
and our righteousness. Satan has always been under the
rule of Christ. He has never been on his own.
We may look at the garden of Eden and think that somehow something
happened that wasn't supposed to happen. Everything that happened
was supposed to happen. Why was that serpent in the garden?
God put him in there. Why did he tempt Eve? God had
him do that. God had him do that. Why did
Adam freely eat, not being tempted, freely eat that fruit? Because
already in heaven, There was a lamb slain from the foundation
of the world. There was a remedy for sin before man ever sinned. And why would there be a remedy
if God's economy owes all and predestinates all if sin wasn't
in the picture? He's always been under the moon.
He did what he did. Like old John Bunyan said, I
don't know what it would have been Rabbit? Had he not seen it? I don't know
what kind of man he would have been. I don't know what his wife
would have been like. Innocent? I can't imagine that. I've got to tell you this. Whatever
he would have had, I wouldn't trade. For the knowledge and
the sweet silence of the grace of God for a ruined sinner. wouldn't trade it at all. Satan's
been allowed, permitted to deceive the nations. But now in this
time of nations, in the time of nations, the desire of all
nations has come. Satan is only allowed to touch
the elect to do them good. As he said in Matthew and Hebrews
chapter one, verse 13, that all the angels are ministering spirits. Now Satan is an angel. Created
be all the angels of ministering spirits to minister to those
that shall be heirs of salvation. So he works for God. He don't
like it, but he works for God. We do not await some future date
when Satan will be bound. He's under lock and key now. He was talking about a road to
the Celestial City. So he was on that road and he
heard this growling. All of a sudden he looked. Here
was this dragon coming toward him, a lion fierce. It jumped
in the air and he was just sitting there as the maul opened up toward
him. All of a sudden he stopped in mid air. Because there was
a chain around his neck and he could only go so far. He might
scare you to death. The Lord said, I fenced my people
in. In fact, Satan said that about
Job. You edged him about. You edged him about. Nobody can get near him. You
edged him about. My daughter is a garden unclothed,
says the psalmist. Satan cannot restrain the church
of the gospel she preaches. Our Lord said that. Upon this
rock I'll build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail
against it. Satan is bound through the preaching
of the gospel. He's bound through the preaching
of the gospel. When the gospel arrow finds its appointed target,
the guided missile brings shock and awe to the house of Satan.
He's bound by the strongest, and his house is full. One might ask, is Satan's power
completely gone? To that, the answer is no. He
still has great influence over natural man and the natural world. His power and influence is restricting
the fact that in the end, though he will mock us, none of the effect will ultimately
be deceived. Satan cannot thwart, discourage,
or withhold the power of God in his gospel. The truth will
cover the earth. enlighten every chosen football
center and will set them all free. Every one of them. For
now, Satan cannot affect his glorious promise. Even at the
end of his days, when Satan is loosed for a little season, which
may be happening now, I don't know, his influence will be on
the religion in Babylon. And he will influence her to
go headlong in the persecution of the church, to fill up her
liquidity. In that little season, the world
of this religion will go mad. In feverish hatred and ravenous
homicidal mania, they will seek to wipe the name of Christ from
the face of the earth. I've heard people actually say
that in the last few weeks. Destroy the name of Christ from
the face of the earth. Zeal will be great in this alternate
It will be the order of the day. The nations will be deceived
and match themselves to the coattails of Babylon. Deception will be
the order of the day. The children of God will not
be deceived. And the word of the righteous is simple. It shall
be well with thee. It shall be well with thee. God give us faith.
