Faith's Only Need

The sermon "Faith's Only Need" by Greg Elmquist focuses on the doctrine of faith, specifically how true faith is rooted in the Word of God. The preacher emphasizes that saving faith relies solely on God's promises rather than human experiences, emotions, or efforts. He illustrates this through the account of Hannah in 1 Samuel 1:17-18, where Hannah's grief is transformed into joy after receiving a promise from God expressed through Eli. Elmquist stresses that true faith believes God's Word, as faith itself is not merely an emotional conviction but an act of trust in God's declarations. The significance of the sermon lies in its reminder to believers that amidst struggles, the Word of God is the steadfast source of hope and assurance.

Thank you, Joey. I'm going to ask you to open
your Bibles with me to Psalm 143. The. We're just going to
read the first two verses of this. Of this song. And. I hope the Lord will. Cause us
to. To see. these two verses in light
of what we just considered in Colossians 3, verse 17. Hear my prayer, O Lord, give
ear to my supplications. In thy faithfulness answer me,
and in thy righteousness, and enter not into judgment with
thy servant. For in thy sight shall no man
living be justified. That's how we pray, that's how
we worship. In the name of the Lord Jesus. Looking to him for
all of our acceptance before God. Pray the Lord will give
us that faith. Now, Tom's gonna come and lead
us in number 69 in your hardbacked hymnal, Safely Through Another
Week. If we've been kept safe, it's because the Lord did it.
And we're so thankful. Tom, you come, please. Safely through another week,
God has brought us on our way. Let us now a blessing seek, waiting
in his courts today. Day of all, the week, the best,
emblem of eternal rest. Day of all, the week, the best,
emblem of eternal rest. ? While we pray for pardoning
grace ? ? Through the dear Redeemer's name ? ? Show thy reconciled
face ? ? Take away our sin and shame ? ? From our worldly care
set free ? ? May we rest this day in thee ? ? From our worldly
care set free ? May we rest this day in thee ? Here we come, thy
name to praise ? Let us feel thy presence near ? May thy glory
meet our eyes ? While we in thy house appear Here afford us,
Lord, a taste of our everlasting feast. Here afford us, Lord,
a taste of our everlasting feast. May thy gospels' joyful sound
conquer sinners, comfort saints. May the fruits of grace abound,
bring relief for all complaints. Thus may all our Lord's days
prove till we join the church above. Thus may all our Lord's
days prove till we join the church above. Please be seated. As we continue our worship of
our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, let us turn to Psalm 99. We'll
do that as a scripture reading. Psalm 99. The Lord reigneth. Let the people
tremble. He sitteth between the cherubims.
Let the earth be moved. The Lord is great in Zion, and
he is high above all the people. Let them praise thy great and
terrible name, for it is holy. The king's strength also loveth
judgment. Establish equity. Thou execute us. Exalt ye the Lord, our God, and
worship at his footstool, for he is holy. Moses and Aaron among
the priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name. He called upon the Lord and he
answered them. He speak unto them in the cloud,
in the cloudy pillar. He kept his testimonies and the
ordinance that he gave them. Father, we thank you for your
word. We thank you that we can come here to worship We thank
you that you have chosen to save us and to make us your children. We pray that you will make us
worthy of this grace and mercy that you've bestowed on us. We
pray for anyone that may be lost today in this congregation and
others. We pray that your word would
reach them and that it may not return void. but to accomplish
what you wanted to accomplish. We ask your blessing and we ask
you to be with Brother Greg as he would bring your word this
morning. We pray that any soul here that's seeking Christ, that
he may come to know him as Savior and Lord even today. We pray
in his name. Amen. Let's stand together once again.
We'll sing the hymn that's on the back of your bulletin. Prepare me, gracious God, to
stand before the Lord. Joy, that's the wrong hymn. It's
I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord. Sorry, number 188, I think. Prepare me, gracious God, to stand before thy face. Thy spirit must the work perform,
for it is all of grace. In Christ's obedience clothed,
and wash me in his blood. So shall I lift my head with
joy among the sons of God. Do Thou my sins subdue, Thy sovereign
love make known, The Spirit of my mind renew, And save me in
Thy Son. Let me attest thy power, let
me thy goodness prove, till my full soul can hold no more of
everlasting love. Please be seated. Let's open our Bibles together
to the first book of Samuel, 1 Samuel chapter 1. This portion of God's Word begins
with a man by the name of Elkanah. Elkanah has two wives. One's name is Penina and the
other's name is Hannah. Penina has children and the Lord
has not enabled Hannah to have any children. Scripture says
that he has closed her womb. Hannah is grieving over the fact
that she's not able to have children. And on top of her grief of not
having children, Panina is jealous of Hannah. We would think maybe it would
be the other way around, but it's really not Hannah that's
jealous of Panina, it's Panina that's jealous of Hannah because
the scripture tells us that when Elkanah would take his family
to Shiloh, which is where the tabernacle was for worship, that
he did that once a year and he would give to Panina and to her
children gifts. But the story tells us that he
gave to Hannah a double portion because he loved Hannah. His
affections for Hannah were so much warmer than they were for
Panina. And so Panina was jealous of
Hannah because of the love that Elkanah had. And she would use
the fact that she had children to try to shame Hannah and try
to persecute her. So this went on year after year
until Hannah pours out her soul to the Lord. And there's a priest
in the temple, his name is Eli. and Eli sees Hannah praying and
Hannah's weeping and her lips are moving but he hears no sound
and he assumes that she's drunk and so he rebukes her for being
intoxicated and she responds by saying to him, oh no. She
said, I am a sore spirit and I'm pouring out my heart to God. I'm without child. And I'm asking
the Lord to give me a child. As I said, the Lord tells us
that this went on year after year between Penina and Hannah. And for this morning, I want
us to look at verses 17 and 18. After Eli realized that she was
in fact not intoxicated, that she was pouring out her heart
in prayer to God, Eli, the man of God, speaks to her. And he answered and said to her,
Go in peace. The God of Israel grant thee
thy petition that thou hast asked of him. And she said, let thine
handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way. She had not eaten. Elkanah was concerned for her.
Elkanah said to her, am I not better to you than ten sons? You have my love, but she wanted
a child. She wanted a man child is what
she said. Now Samuel's going to be the
child that the Lord gives her. But here's what she says in verse
18. Let thine handmaid find grace
in my sight. So the woman went her way. and did eat, and her countenance
was no more sad. What changed for Hannah? Her countenance changed. She's
no more sad. She's eating now. She's rejoicing. She's not grieved. By the persecutions and accusations
of Penina, she's filled with hope and joy. What changed? What changed? Here's what changed. She had a word from God. She
had a word from God. That's the only thing that changed. I've titled this message Faith's
Only Need. Faith's Only Need. All saving faith ever really
has, as they say at the end of the day, And all saving faith
ever really needs is a word from God. Faith is not some sort of, you
know, strong character trait that is convinced that something's
going to happen and you force God's hand because you believe
it hard enough. Faith is just believing God.
Faith is believing what God has said. Faith comes by hearing and hearing
comes by the Word of God. The only thing faith ever really
has and the only thing faith ever really needs and the only
thing that changed for Hannah was that she had a word from
God. When experience fails Feelings
wane. You can't see any real changes
in your life. Your critics are multiplied. All forms of encouragement are
gone. The enemy is strong. What do
you have? What do you have? Because those
means of of encouragement only, you know, they only really satisfy
the flesh. The only thing that really speaks
to the heart is a word from God. A word from God. That's all we have. That's all
we need. Can't trust our experiences.
They're so subjective. And friends, you know, we're
thankful for them, but often they're disappointing. What do we have? We just sang
a hymn by Augustus Toplady and I wrote a few words down in my
notes of Rock of Ages. Not the labors of my hands can
fulfill thy law's demands. Could my zeal no respite know? Could my tears forever flow? All for sin could not atone. Thou must save, and thou alone. Nothing in my hand I bring, only
to thy cross I cling. Lord, all we have. All we have,
we're standing on the promises of God that cannot fail. When
howling storms of doubt and fear assail, by the living word of
God I shall prevail, standing, standing on the promises of God. It's the only thing we have. If we're standing anywhere else,
that foundation's gonna be shifty. But the word of God is sure,
it's steadfast, it doesn't change. Turn with me to Psalm 19, Psalm
19. We'll begin reading in verse
7 and the word law and testimony and statutes and commandments
are all words being used to describe the entirety of God's word. And
so David is saying the law of the
Lord is perfect. Converting the soul, the testimony
of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the
Lord are right, rejoicing the heart. The commandment of the
Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is
clean, enduring forever. The judgments of the Lord are
true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than
gold, yea, than much fine gold. Sweeter also than honey and the
honeycomb. Moreover, by them, as thy servant
warned, and in keeping them, there is great reward." All Hannah had is all we have. A word from God. And it's all
faith needs. It's all faith needs. Peter said it like this in 2nd
Peter chapter 1, whereby our giving unto us exceeding great
and precious promises that by these we might be partakers of
the divine nature. By these great and precious promises,
God enables us to be partakers of the divine nature. What else do we have? Our feelings, our experiences.
There's a great article in your bulletin this morning that Maurice
Montgomery wrote about those who are waiting for an experience
or waiting for a feeling. And he reveals how self-righteous
that is. That I need something other than
what God has spoken. I'm looking for something outside
of Christ, something in me to confirm The blessings of God. All Hannah
had. She went away. She was no more
sad. She ate. She rejoiced. She was
glad. Penina couldn't bother her anymore.
All she had was a word from God. Child of God, have you got anything
else? Everything else ultimately fails,
doesn't it? Everything else ultimately falls short. Everything else
leaves you wanting. But if God speaks his word to
your heart, all Abraham had, God promised him to be the father
of a great nation and all he ever had was one child. And that
after he was a hundred years old. But the scripture says that he
believed God and God counted it to him for righteousness.
That's what faith does. Faith just believes God. Faith
can't not believe God. God had given Hannah. Hannah
said, and Hannah's name, by the way, means grace. Hannah said,
might thy maidservant and what What humility we see in Hannah's
response to Eli. Elkanah, from what we can tell
in the scriptures, is obviously a man of great means. And Hannah
was his favored wife, and she would have been someone in the
community. But when the man of God speaks the word of God to
her, she refers to herself as a handmaid. A handmaid was a
servant, most often a slave. And she refers to herself as
Eli's handmaid. And what humility the Lord had
given to her because now she had a word from God, that God
would speak to me, that God would give me a word, that he would
pronounce this promise to me. God said, go in peace. For the request that you've asked,
the Lord's gonna give it to you. And that's all she had. How long did it take Noah to
build the ark? Scripture's not really clear.
Could have been up to a hundred years. Never had rain before, ever. Water had never fallen from the
sky. And God said there was going to be a deluge that was going
to flood the entire world and told him to build an ark. All
he had was a word from God. That's all he had. You didn't
have any other experience but a word from God. Moses had a word from God that
the children of Israel were going to inherit the promised land,
but Moses never set foot in the promised land. He saw it from
a distance from afar off, but he believed God. That's what
faith does. Faith just believes God. That's why we We believe that
all scripture, all scripture is given by inspiration of God
and all scripture is profitable. It's all profitable. Where else
are you going to go? The words of men, the philosophers,
the educators, it's all profitable for doctrine and for reproof
and for correction and for instruction and righteousness that the man
of God may be thoroughly furnished. Thoroughly furnished unto all
good works. What is the good work? Good work is faith. Faith
is believing God. God's given us his word, brethren. That's all we have. All we have
is all Hannah had. It's a word from God. First Kings
chapter 17. The Lord had brought a drought
and consequently a famine in Israel and people were dying
left and right and there was no food and Elijah the prophet
of God goes to a town and there was a woman there who he saw
and he asked her for something to eat and she said to him, She
said to him, all I have is a handful of meal and a little cruise of
oil and I was about to go fix my son and I a cake and we were
gonna eat it and then die. And Elijah said to her, go ahead
and do that. But before you feed yourself,
make me a cake. Bring me one first. And I promise
to you, that that grain, that flour will not fail and the oil
will not cease until this drought is over. And she did it. She obeyed the word of God. She believed God. And for the
rest of that famine, every day she went to that barrel that
had a handful of meal on it and that's all it ever had in it.
God didn't fill the barrel up. We walk by faith not by sight. We have to have our daily bread
and so it was with her. The Lord answered Elijah's word
by giving her meal and oil enough to sustain her one day at a time. One day at a time. She believed
God. That's all she had. All she had was a word from God.
Scripture says she did according to the saying of Elijah. And Hebrews chapter 11 tells
us that all these died in faith not having received the promise
but having looked afar off. They believed God. All faith ever really has. It doesn't have anything else.
And all faith ever really needs is a word from God. Nothing else. And faith can't not believe. I know it's a double negative,
but you understand I'm saying it that way for emphasis. Faith
believes God. God said it, so God's given me
faith. How much of God's word do you
have to believe to be a believer? If God's made you a believer,
you believe every word God has spoken. Every word he's spoken,
you believe it. You can't not believe it. And in the darkest hours of doubt
and fear and uncertainty and feelings waning and experiences
proving to be not reliable and men not being there for you as
they ought, all you have is a word from God. And it's all you need. It's all
you need. Because faith lives off the Word
of God. The unbelief of our flesh is
the sin that doth so easily beset us, isn't it? It is the polluted
fountain from which all other sins come. It is our unbelief. And the child of God is always
crying, O Lord, help thou mine unbelief. Help thou mine unbelief."
And when the Spirit of God comes, he convicts you of sin because
you believe not God. There's the root problem, isn't
it? Every other problem that we have, every other crooked
stream that's polluted comes from that fountain, unbelief. Disciples said, oh Lord, increase
our faith. Conviction of sin, guilt, shame,
sorrow, yes, all those things come. All those things come,
but those things can be from the conscience, can't they? The
Spirit of God convicts of sin. He shows you the real root cause
of your sin. The real root cause. I'm not
believing God. Hannah heard a word from God
and she went away and her countenance was no more sad. All she had and all she needed. What proof do we have? The word
of God settles all controversy. What say at the scriptures? You know, maybe we're not. We're not sensible of how sinful
we really are. But all we need is the word of
God. And God says, man, that's you
and me, at their very best state, The best thing I can do is altogether
vanity. That's all I need. All I need
to believe that I'm a sinner is not the sorrow and shame and
guilt that come with sin. And if I could just wallow in
that a little bit more, maybe I could really be a sinner. No. All have sinned and come short
of the glory of God. That's what God says. And faith,
that's all you have. That's all you have. And it's all you need to convince
you that you need a savior. You see that? You have God's
word to speak to you. In me, that is in my flesh, dwelleth
no good thing. Well, you know, I try to be a
good person and I try to, you know, you look at your life and
you can find some things that you've done that, you know, that
are, that are, you know, that are virtuous and good and you
try to be that way with men. But God says in me, that is in
my flesh, dwelleth no good thing. Don't we have a word? God says
it, so that must be true. It must be true. The heart is
deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. Always got
a good heart. That's not what God says. So it must be true because I
believe God is all I need. I don't need the experience of a dark, you know, they used to
have prayer altars, you know, where you would come and you
would, if you repented long enough and grieved hard enough, you
know, that you convinced others that you were really sorry for
your sin, you know, that you could be forgiven. The Lord Jesus Christ, the only
one that ever felt sorrow for sin, as it ought to be felt. But we have God's word, and that's
all faith needs, for you to believe that you're a sinner, and that
in you, that is in your flesh, there dwelleth no good thing,
and that your righteousnesses, all your righteousnesses are
as filthy rags. How do you know that? By your
experience? No, no, you know it because God
said it. All you need to believe that
you're a sinner is the word of God. A word from God is all you
need. And really at the end of the
day, it's all you have. Isaiah put it like this, from
the sole of the foot even to the head, there is no soundness
in it but wounds and bruises and putrefying sores. That's all faith needs. Faith
says when God looks at me, he sees from the top of my head
to the bottom of my feet are wounds, putrefying sores, not
been mollified, not been bound up. God sees me leprous. He looks down my throat. He looks
into my heart. and sees nothing but wickedness
and emptiness. So it must be so. It must be
so. We compare ourselves to one another
a good bit, don't we? And we ought to try to be good
to one another and do right. But we're talking about what
God says in His Word about what we are. Someone says, I don't
like that. I'm sorry, you have to take it
up with God, I'm just a messenger. It's what God says, and it's
all faith needs. I'm not sensible to my need,
but God says that I'm poor and needy, so I must be. I can't see that I'm dead in
my trespasses and sin. But God says, as in one man,
sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and so death passed
upon all men for all of sin. God said that. All faith needs and all faith
has, all Hannah had and all she needed was a word from God. Now, oftentimes we try to add
to the simplicity of God's word to find something else to confirm
the truth. You don't need anything else.
Faith doesn't have anything else. Hannah had a word from God and
it changed everything for her. She saw herself as a handmaid.
She went away. Her countenance was no more sad.
She ate. Penina couldn't bother anymore.
Oh, our sorrows seem so shallow. I feel so hypocritical in my
grief and mourning over sin. Lord, I just need a a broken
heart and a contrite spirit. If you'll just make it more broken
and more contrite, then I'll be convinced by that experience
that I'm really repentant. And that's self-righteousness.
Listen, something breaks. You have something that you're
using and it breaks, it means it doesn't work anymore. A broken heart is a heart that
doesn't work. It's a heart that doesn't feel sorrow and shame
as it ought. That's really the issue of a
broken heart. Don't look for a broken heart
and contrite spirit to convince you that you're repentant. Just come before the Lord, yes,
you said my heart is broken, it's broken, it doesn't work. That's all I need. It's just
what God has said. Here's the promise about our
sinfulness and this is all the child of God needs. This is all
faith needs and it's all faith's got. Christ came in the world to save
sinners. Sinners. He only saves sinners and he
saves every single one of them. We've got God's word to confirm
that. He commended his love toward
us and that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Only sinners need a savior. For when we were yet without
strength in due time, Christ died for the ungodly. Then drew near. unto him all the publicans and
sinners for to hear him. For to hear him. I need a word
from God. I'm a sinner. I don't know anything. I can't do anything. I don't
have anything. I need a word from God. And I
believe what God says about my condition. My condition that
is that I'm dead and And sinful. And here's the promise of God,
I came not to call the righteous. And brethren, I remind you again,
this this need to find something other than this stated word of
God. For evidence. In our feelings,
in our experiences is self-righteousness. I came not to call the righteous
but sinners to repentance. A sinner just believes God. You believe God, don't you, child
of God? Yet you, your new man, your new man knows that every
word of God is true. And every hope you have is in
that truth. And yet you carry this old man
around with you that's battling against your spirit and warring
with you and not believing God. And you need to be reminded once
again what God has said. That's why we come together here.
Hannah went to the temple to worship God. She prayed to God. God speak to me and God spoke
to her and she went away. eating and rejoicing and her
countenance was no more sad. Penina couldn't bother her anymore
and she looked at Elkanah, she said, we're going to have a child. We're going to have a child. Before any means had been done
to have that child, we're going to have a child. God promised
it. We can't see or properly feel
the fact that we're dead to sin. Dead to sin. Sin seems very much alive in
you, doesn't it? That's your experience, that's
your feeling. But we have a word from God.
Reckon yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto
God through Jesus Christ. Now that's God's Word. So your
feelings really don't matter. Your experience is irrelevant.
God says to reckon yourselves, in other words, You know, we
use the word reckon in the South to say, well, you know, I reckon
so, meaning it could be this way, could be that way. But this
word reckon, another way to think about it is dead reckoning. And
dead reckoning is what happens every time you pull out your
phone and you pull up your app on trying to figure out directions,
and that little dot shows you exactly where you're located.
What is your phone doing? It is dead reckoning your position
off of two or three or four satellites up there and positioning you
right where you are. I was doing that the other day
and the little dot was moving around until it landed right
where I knew I was. Well, that's pretty accurate.
Reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin. Yes, child of God, sin feels
like it's very much alive in you. But God says you're dead
to it. That when Christ died, you died. It's the only means of grace
that will give you any hope over your sin is what God says. My experience tells me that I
have sinned and come short of the glory of God. I see it, I
feel it in my life more, more than I am able to feel what God
says about all my sin. being in his body upon that tree
and being put away once and for all by the sacrifice of himself,
being buried in the depths of the sea, God forgetting them
no more, being covered by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Child of God, we've got a word from God. We've got a word from
God in our struggle with sin and faith just believes God.
Faith just says it must be so. I don't feel it as I ought. I
don't experience it as I want, but God says it. I've got a word
from God. It's all faith has. It's all
it has. And it's all it needs. I cannot see or feel or experience
the great mystical transaction that took place on Calvary's
cross, yet I have a word from God that he made an end of sin
and he put it away. That's God's
word. Child of God, you believe that. You embrace that. That's your
only hope. You've got a word from God, just like God gave
Hannah a word. We have a word from God that
the work that the father had given him was finished. That's a word from God. He finished
the work. He established righteousness.
He made an end of the law. Through the eternal spirit, he
offered himself to God without spot and purged our sins once
and for all. There's our hope. We have a word
from God. What else do we need? What else do we have? He's reconciled
us to God. He's bought us with the precious
blood. He took that blood and He sprinkled
it upon the mercy seat. He obtained eternal redemption
for us. He redeemed us. He atoned for
our sins. As our scapegoat, the hands of
the Father were placed on Him and He was sent in the wilderness
to carry them away. That scapegoat never came back. The Lord Jesus Christ came back. He came back after going into
the wilderness. Why? Because he had put away
those sins. A scapegoat couldn't do it, but
he did. Like Judah standing before his
father on behalf of Benjamin, the Lord Jesus Christ is our
surety. And he said to his father, I
will bring him again. And if I don't charge it to my
account, is it possible with you? You see, we've got God's
word. We've got God's word. You can't rely on your feelings.
You can't rely on your experiences. You can't rely on your on your
on your intellect and your wisdom and your you can't rely, but
you've got God's word. Hannah had a word from God. All she had, it changed everything. We have a high priest who, like
Aaron, was anointed by God and went into the holies of holies
himself and presented himself to God on behalf of his people.
That's God's word. You have no place else to go.
That's all we have. Like the Passover lamb, he was
burnt with fire and quenched the wrath of God. And God said,
when I see the blood, I'll pass by you. I'll pass by you. When I see his blood, that's
God's word. What else do you have? Can you go away with your countenance
no more sad? Can you go away rejoicing, believing
God that what he had promised he was also able to do? That's
what faith does. We cannot see or feel our holiness
before God. But we have a word from God.
As he is, so are we in this world. That's what God says. It's all
I need. It's all I need. He that sanctifieth and they
that are sanctified are all as one, whereby he's not ashamed
to call them his brethren. We have a word from God. We are
sanctified through the body of Jesus Christ once and for all. By one offering, he has perfected
forever them that are sanctified. That's God's word. What else
do you have? We don't have anything else,
do we? But faith doesn't need anything
else. It doesn't look for anything
else. It doesn't go anywhere else. It goes to God's word. In Providence, we can't see how
God is working all things together for our good. It's like the tapestry. We're looking at the backside
of it, and we see all this knotted yarn that doesn't make sense,
and yet on the other side, God is putting together a beautiful
portrait of His grace and glory. And yet, God has said, I'm working
on the other side. I'm working on the other side.
All things together, you see confusion, but faith believes
God. It just believes God. I've got a word from God. He
said, all things work together for good for them that love Him
and those that are called according to His purpose. What else do
I have? You can't see heaven. God hasn't done for us what he
did for John in the book of Revelation
when he caught him up into the third heaven or what he did for
the Apostle Paul. They saw things that were unspeakable
and yet we have a word from God. We have a word from God. Let not your heart be troubled. You believe in God? Believe also
in me, for in my Father's house are many mansions. If it were
not so, I would have told you. I go and prepare a place for
you, so that where I am, there you may be also. We've got a word from God. We're
hanging all the hopes of our immortal soul, not on our ability
to see into heaven or to feel these things or experience, but
on God's promises, standing on the promises. Abraham looked for a city whose
builder and maker was God. All we have. And it's all we need. In closing, turn with me to Hebrews
chapter 11. Verse 13. You know how, let's look at the
first two verses of Hebrews chapter 11 first. Now faith is the substance,
the ground or confidence of things hoped for. And it is the evidence
of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained
a good report. Now look at verse 13, these all
died in faith not having received the promises but having seen
them afar off and were persuaded of them and embraced them and
confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims in the earth for
they that say such things declare plainly. that they seek a country. And truly, if they had been mindful
of that country from which they came out, they might have had
opportunity to have returned. But now, they desire a better
country that is a heavenly, wherefore God is not ashamed to be called
their God, for he hath prepared a city for them. Hannah went to worship. She hadn't eaten. Elkanah knew
that she was sad and he loved her so. Penina persecuted her. She was without a child. She asked the Lord, to speak
to her, and he did. And she walked away. She ate. Her countenance was no longer
sad. Surely Penina couldn't bother
her anymore. And certainly she went to Elkanah
and said, God's given us a promise, and I believe him. Next year, she's gonna come back.
She's gonna have that child that God had promised. Child of God, God's given you
saving faith. At the end of the day, the only
thing that's gonna make a difference is God's word. And you're hanging all your hopes
on his precious promises, revealing his glorious son and
accomplished work. It's all you need. It's all you
have. Amen. Tom, you come, please. Number 12 in the Sproul hymn.
Let's stand together. Number 12.
