Yeah. Yeah. Good evening. Let's open tonight's
service with hymn number 37 from your Spiral Gospel Hymnal, number
37. Let's all stand together. 37.
I miss Joy already. Approach, my soul, the throne
of grace in every time of need. There's mercy for the needy one
who Jesus' name shall plead. Though I'm a weak and sinful
wretch, I will approach the throne. I'll lean upon Christ's mighty
arm and plead His blood alone. The blood, the precious blood
of Christ Has opened up the way By which I can draw near to God
And to my Father pray Though Satan tempts my heart to sin
I'll call upon my God And if I fall, He'll lift me up and
cleanse me in the blood. The way is open, God will hear
my groans and cries of grief. Nothing can keep me from His
throne but my own unbelief. O Lord, my unbelief remove and
turn my heart by grace. Compel me to approach your throne
and there spread out my case. Please be seated. Good evening. Let's open our
Bibles together to Hebrews chapter 10. After that hymn, I wanted
to read this passage. It's such an encouragement. It's good to have Roger and Bonnie
with us from Ohio. They've been listening online
for some time, and y'all were here for our conference in January.
We're happy, glad you're here. Hebrews chapter 10, we'll begin reading in verse
11. And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering
oftentimes the same sacrifices which can never take away sins. No sacrifice that man makes can
satisfy the demands of God's justice, cannot take away sin. Those Old Testament sacrifices
were a type, they were a shadow, they were a picture of the one
sacrifice, the only sacrifice that's able to take away our
sin. But this man, after he had offered
one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of
God, from henceforth expecting expecting till his enemies be
made his footstools. Now the scripture makes it clear
that we by nature are at enmity with God. And what does the Lord
do? He takes his enemies and causes
them to sit at his feet like Mary and choose that one thing
that is needful. For by one offering, the offering
of himself, and he didn't offer himself to us, he offered himself
to the Father. For by one offering, he hath
perfected forever them that are made holy. That's what sanctified
means, to be made holy, to be made perfect. How are we going
to be perfect in the sight of God by the sacrifice that the
Lord Jesus Christ made of himself? Where the Holy Ghost also is
a witness to us, for after they had said before, this is the
covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith
the Lord, I will put my laws in their hearts. I will write
them in their minds. are in their minds while I write
them and their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now that's a mystery. How can the omniscient God say
your sins and iniquities I'll remember no more. I'll separate
them from you as far as the East is from the West. But that's
what he did when he covered them with the blood of his son. Now
where remission of these is there is no more offering for sin.
We're not making any more offerings for sin. We're not. We're not
trying to add to what Christ has already accomplished. He
has perfected. You can't. You can't improve
perfection, can you? You can't improve perfection.
Having therefore brethren. Boldness. Courage. the right to come into the presence
of God, the holiest by the blood of Jesus. That's how we come.
By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us through
the veil, that is to say his flesh and having a high priest
over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart and
full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an
evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure blood. Let us hold fast the profession
of our faith without wavering. What is the profession of our
faith? It's finished. It is finished. That's the profession
of our faith. Christ has finished the work
of redemption for us. Let us hold fast to that. To
Him. Let's pray. Our Heavenly Father,
once again you've In your merciful Providence brought us to this
place. Where you've promised to meet
with us. And oh Lord, how hopeful we are to experience the fulfillment
of that promise. We pray that you would open our
hearts. Open the eyes of our understanding. Open the windows
of heaven. We pray that you would. Come
down. But you would speak to our It calls us, Lord, to have our
comfort, our assurance, and all our salvation in the glorious
person and accomplished work of thy dear son. For it's in
his name we ask it. Amen. Let's all stand together, we'll
sing hymn number 340 from the Hardback Temple. 340, nearer
still nearer. Nearer, still nearer, close to
thy heart. Draw me, my Savior, so precious
thou art. Fold me, O fold me, Close to
thy breast, Shelter me safe In that haven of rest. Shelter me safe in that haven
of rest. Nearer, still nearer, nothing
I bring. not as an offering to Jesus,
my King. Only my sinful, now contrite
heart grant me the cleansing thy blood doth impart. Grant me the cleansing thy blood
doth impart. Dearer, still nearer, Lord, to
be thine. Sin with its follies, I gladly
resign. All of its pleasures, pomp and
its pride, Give me but Jesus, my Lord crucified. Give me but Jesus, my Lord crucified. Nearer, still nearer, while life
shall last. Till safe in glory my anchor
is cast Through endless ages ever to be Nearer, my Savior,
still nearer to Thee You're still nearer to Thee. Please be seated. Will you turn with me in your
Bibles to Psalm 82. Psalm 82. I've titled this message justice
served justice served. I don't know of another, another word, perhaps other than
the word grace that summarizes what we believe and hold so dear. in our hearts for the hope of
our salvation other than justified. Justified. The scripture says in Isaiah
chapter 33, the Lord is our judge. The Lord is our lawgiver. The
Lord is our king. He will save us. He's our judge. He's our lawgiver. He's our king, and he's our savior. And the question is, how is God
going to deliver us from the judgment of his law, our sinful
violation of his law? The Lord makes it clear. He says,
I will in no wise clear the guilty. Well, here's the good news, brethren. When we step into glory, we're
going to hear those words, well done, good and faithful servant. Everyone that's in Christ is
going to hear those words. For the obedience of the Lord
Jesus Christ is our obedience. You do not need the spirit of
God. You do not need any spiritual
understanding or know Christ or his grace in order to know
that Psalm 82 is a warning to corrupt judges to exercise justice
properly. It is a warning against taking
advantage of the helpless and being lenient towards the wealthy
for the magistrate's own personal profit. Our founding fathers
understood something of the depravity of our hearts when they wrote
the Constitution and made most of the Bill of Rights relating
to our system of law. knowing that men would not judge
rightly. And if you've had any experience
with our justice system, you'll know that there's very little
justice. In fact, that in spite of the fact that we have so many
safeguards against the abuse of justice, we still find a way
to do it, don't we? And the Lord is clearly warning
those unjust judges, and so be it. That's all I'm gonna say
about that. All the self-serving injustices
will be exposed and punished by God in the end. Let's read this psalm together. God standeth in the congregation
of the mighty. He judgeth among the gods. Now, gods is being used here
as men of authority. And the spiritual gospel application
of this has to do with the gospel preacher. Turn with me back to
Jeremiah, or forward up to Jeremiah chapter 23. Jeremiah chapter
23. Woe, verse one, woe be unto the
pastors that destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture, saith
the Lord. Therefore, thus saith the Lord
God of Israel against the pastors that feed my people. You have
scattered my flock, driven them away, and have not visited them. Behold, I will visit you with
the evil of your doings, saith the Lord. I want us to understand
Psalm 82. as a rebuke, not against civil
magistrates who might abuse and twist the law for their own benefit,
but an abuse of those who pretend to be speaking for God, but in
fact take advantage of the poor and the fatherless by putting
them under the burden of the law for the hope of their salvation.
That's what this psalm is about. Anybody can see the other part. Verse three, I will gather the
remnant of my flock out of all the countries, whether I've driven
them and I will bring them again to their folds and they shall
be fruitful and increase. And I will set up shepherds over
them, which shall feed them and they shall fear no more. Any man who stands and pretends
to speak on the authority of God and gives men something to
do in order to secure their salvation and earn favor with God only
instills fear, only instills fear. If our salvation is based
on a decision that we make, if it's based on a work that we
perform, if it's based on anything that we do or don't do, If we've
got any sense about us and any truthfulness in our hearts, we
have to be afraid whether we've done it right, whether we did
enough. And God says, I will set up shepherds
over them that will feed them. Feed them what? Feed them with
the bread of life. Feed them with the gospel of
God's free grace and declare unto them that Christ is the
end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth. That's
what Psalm 82 is about. It's about justification. Justification. Behold, the days come, verse
5, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous
branch and a king shall reign and prosper. You know who that
righteous branch is. You know who the son of David
is. It's none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. And he was
raised up by God and he prospered. He prospered. What did he prosper
in? He prospered in accomplishing
that which he came to do. What did he come to do? You shall
call his name Jesus for he shall save his people from their sins. He will present himself to God
on their behalf. So that God made him who knew
no sin to be sin that we might be made the righteousness of
God in him. God's holy justice must be satisfied. God, the only way that God can
be just and justify sinners is through the perfect righteousness
and sacrifice and shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. That's
the, that's perfect justice. That's perfect justice. And anything
less than that is not perfect justice. A king shall reign and prosper
and shall execute judgment and justice in the world. In the
earth, that's what he did. He executed justice and judgment. He suffered the full judgment
of God's wrath for the sins of God's people in order to satisfy
divine justice. So that God said, I'm satisfied,
justice has been met. Religion is all based on you
doing something in order to try to satisfy God's justice. It's nothing more than looking
for a loophole in the law, and it's not justice. There's only
one perfect justice. In his days, Judah shall be saved. When was Judah saved? When were
God's people made justified Romans chapter 4 verse 25 says that
he was offered up for our offenses and raised again. Now the preposition
for is in the King James. He was offered up for our offenses
and raised again for our justification. Let me explain that word for
to you. If we put out a a poster that said Jesse James is wanted
for murder. You could understand that two
different ways. But the obvious meaning is that
he's wanted because of a murder that he committed, not that he's
wanted so that he can commit murder. People read that and they say,
well, he was raised again for our justification. No, he was
raised again because of our justification. When the Lord Jesus Christ bowed
his mighty head on Calvary's cross and he cried, it is finished. Everything necessary for the
salvation of God's people was accomplished and God's people
were saved and justified before God. And the proof that we're
justified is the resurrection, is the resurrection. In his days, Judah shall be saved
and Israel shall dwell safely And this is the name whereby
he shall be called the Lord our righteousness. The Lord Jesus
Christ is all our righteousness before God. He has justified
us by his perfect obedience to the law of God. That's what the
justice and judgment is all about in Psalm 82. It's, yeah, we ought
to be fair in our executing of the law with men, but that's
not gonna happen in this world. There's only one place where
perfect justice is accomplished, and that's through the life,
death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ, who justified
all his people and accomplished their salvation. Turn over just
a few pages to Jeremiah chapter 33. And the same thing is repeated
in Jeremiah chapter 33, but notice in verse 16, in those days, Judah
shall be saved and Israel shall dwell safely. And this is the
name whereby she shall be called. What did it say in Jeremiah 22?
or Jeremiah 23, this is the name whereby he shall be called Jehovah
Sidkenu, we sing that hymn, the Lord our righteousness. And here the Lord makes it clear
and this is the name whereby she shall be called the Lord
our righteousness. So that every member of the body
of Christ has the full righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ. This
word justice And justified in the scripture comes from the
same word that the word righteousness comes from. It means a perfect
obedience to the law of God. Perfect compliance to God's law. That's what it means. We sometimes take the word justified
and we cleverly say, just if I'd never sinned. You've heard
that before. And we understand what we mean by that, but it's
not just if I'd never sinned. Justified before God means I've
never sinned. I've never sinned. Perfectly
righteous in the sight of God. Now what he said, I separated,
I remember your sins no more. God the Father sees every one
of His people in His Son and He says to every single one of
them, regardless of what they've done or what they haven't done,
well done, good and faithful servant. Henry Mahan was pretty much completely
deaf when the Lord took him home, but I am sure That when he opened
his eyes in glory, he heard those words. First words he's heard
in years. Well done. Good and faithful
servant. It wasn't because of anything
he did. It wasn't because of, of, of, of his faithful ministry. And he was, it was because of
Christ. Every child of God has that to
look forward to. Well done. Revelation chapter 22 verse 12
says, behold, I come quickly and my reward is with me to give
every man according to his works. Now, you want God to judge you
according to your works? Or you want him to judge you
according to the works of Christ? That's why we come boldly to
the throne of grace to find help. In our time of need. Lord, I
need a righteousness outside of myself. I need a perfect obedience
before God and I can't. I can't do it. My only hope is
the Lord Jesus Christ. justified, no sin. Here's the definition of the
word justified, a right standing before the law of God. So that every word of God's law
is silenced when we stand in its presence, can find no condemnation,
Right after Paul said, oh, wretched man that I am, who shall deliver
me from the body of this death? What did he say? Thanks be to
God. In Christ Jesus, I am free. There
is now therefore no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus.
The law has been silenced. It cannot condemn me. The Lord
Jesus Christ has justified me. He has satisfied the demands
of God's law and all the hope of my acceptance before God is
found in him. Turn to me to Job chapter 25,
Job 25. Listen to what. You know, Job's friends spoke
some things that were true. And Bildad speaks the truth in
Job chapter 25. The problem is he doesn't give
Job any answers to the question. He doesn't give him any hope
for salvation. Job chapter 25, then answered
Bildab the Shuhite and said, dominion and fear are with him. He maketh peace in his high places. Is there any number of his armies
and upon whom doth not his light arise? How then? You know, what Bildad's declaring
in those first three verses is that God is omniscient, God is
omnipotent, God is sovereign, God sees everything, God knows
everything, He knows the secrets of our hearts. Psalm 139, He
knows our thoughts before we think them, He knows our words
before we speak them, and those things are true about God. And
so Bildad says, if that be true, then how then can man be justified
with God? And how can he be clean that
is born of a woman? Behold, even to the moon and
it shineth not, yea, the stars are not pure in his sight. God
says those stars, they don't have a moral code. And even they are not pure in
his sight. How much less man that is of
a worm and the son of man who is a worm. Who's the son of man? The Lord
Jesus Christ. And he became a worm. He made
of himself no reputation and became a servant and was obedient
even unto death. And he calls himself a worm.
You see, substitution and justification go hand in hand, don't they?
We're justified before God because we have a substitute. We have
a sin bearer. We have a surety. We have one
who has satisfied the demands of God's law. And there's no
hope of being justified in the presence of God. Bill Dadd's
right. He said, how is anyone born of a woman going to be pure
on the side of God? The stars aren't pure before God. How are
you going to justify yourself before God? Turn with me to Psalm
143. Psalm 143. Verse one. It's a Psalm of David. Hear my prayer, O Lord. Give
ear to my supplications, Lord. I need for you to supply me.
with a righteousness that's going to be acceptable in your sight.
Give ear to my supplication in thy faithfulness answer me and
in thy righteousness and enter not into judgment with thy servant
for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. In the sight
of God, no man living is going to be justified in the sight
of God. What argument are we going to
offer God to justify ourselves before him? What are we going
to say? Well, I, I, I, no, don't let
I be the first word of your, of your response back to God. I accepted Jesus. I did a no.
I'll let him speak for me. I'll let him speak for me. If
I'm justified in the sight of God, He's going to have to justify
me. Turn with me to Romans chapter
3. It looks like the summer storm schedule
has started. That's a good thing. First of
June, keep it from being so hot. Romans chapter three, verse 18 says, there's no fear
of God before their eyes. Speaking of the unbeliever, the
person who thinks that he has done something to justify himself
in the sight of God has no fear of God. They have no understanding
of what he requires. to think that I've done something
to make what Jesus did work for me or that I've done something
to please God. And that's just a person who's just
showing they have no fear of God. We fear God because he's
holy. We fear God because he's just.
We fear, to fear God is to fear standing in the presence of a
holy and just God without Christ as our substitute. without Christ
speaking on our behalf and justifying us with his righteousness. That's
a fearful thing, isn't it? Paul said in Hebrews, it's a
fearful thing to fall into the hands of an angry God. I don't
want to fall into his hands. The Lord Jesus Christ did. When God the Father saw our sins
on his darling son, he fell into the hands of an angry God, and
the full fury of God's wrath fell from heaven. And God saw
the travail of his soul, and God said, I'm satisfied. It pleased
God to bruise him. He had no choice. He had no choice
but to exercise justice. Why did he do it? That we might
be justified. That we might be justified. He says, there's no fear of God
before. Now we know that what things soever the law sayeth
that sayeth to them who are under the law, that every mouth may
be stopped and all the world may become guilty before God.
All the law does expose our guilt. The law is not our schoolmaster
to take us to Christ. The gospel is what takes us to
Christ. All the law of God does is make one guilty. All the law
of God does is condemn. All the law of God does is judge.
The law shows no mercy. The law can't love. The law can't
woo us. The law just says, shuts our
mouths and says, guilty, guilty. Therefore, By the deeds of the
law, there shall no flesh be justified in his sight, for by
the law is the knowledge of sin. Paul said before the law came,
I was alive, but when the law came, I died. I died. But now, But now the righteousness
of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and
the prophets, even the righteousness of God, which is by faith of
Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe, for there
is no difference for all have sinned and come short of the
glory of God. We've all violated God's law.
We can't be justified by what we do or what we don't do. Why? Because we can't satisfy the
demands of God's law. We've never been able to keep
one of God's laws one time, not once. That lawyer, the lawyer came
to Christ, said, what must I do to inherit eternal life? The Lord said, well, what's the
law say? What's the law say? And the lawyer
said, well, the law says I shall love the Lord thy God and all
thy heart and all thy mind and all thy soul. Love thy neighbor
as thyself. And the Lord said, go do that,
you'll be justified. This is different from the rich
young ruler. This is another, this is the lawyer that kind
of asks the same question. Go do that, you'll be justified.
You can't do it, can you? We've never been able to love
God with all of our heart and all of our mind and all of our
soul for one moment. We've never been able to love
others like we love ourselves, but he did. He did. There's never a moment of his
life here on earth that he didn't love God, all of his heart and
all of his mind, all of his soul, all the time. And he loved his
people unto the end. And greater love hath no man
than this. And he laid down his life for his friends. We're justified
in the law keeping of the Lord Jesus Christ. Being justified, look at verse
24, being justified freely by his grace through the redemption
that is in Christ Jesus. Here's how we're justified. whom
God has set forth to be the propitiation. And you know what the word propitious
means? It means God's not angry anymore. His wrath has been appeased.
His justice has been satisfied. His holiness has been upheld
and the scriptures making it clear that the Lord Jesus Christ
is our propitiation before God. So we're justified freely by
his grace. through faith in his blood to
declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are
passed through the forbearance of God. To declare, I say at
this time, his righteousness that he might be just and justifier
of him which believeth in Jesus." Where is Boastine then? Religious, self-righteous, religious,
pharisaical people are so full of boasting, aren't they? They're
so full of boasting. You remember the story the Lord
told of the publican and the Pharisee that were praying in
the temple, and the Pharisee was praying unto himself. Father, I thank Thee that I'm
not like other men. I'm not an extortioner. I tithe
all that I have. I fast twice a week. I'm particularly
glad I'm not like that publican over there. He's boasting. The publican would not so much
as even look up but smote himself upon his breast and said, Oh
God, have mercy upon me, the sinner. And the Lord asked this
question. That man, he didn't ask a question,
he actually declared it. He said, that man went down to
his house justified. Justified. So men are either
going to justify themselves or Christ is going to justify us. Condemned or justified. All men
are going to be judged by their works. All men are going to be
judged by their works. You're going to be judged by
your works or his works are going to be your works. One way or
the other. Where is boasting? It's excluded
by what law? By the law of works? Nay, but
by the law of faith. Therefore, we conclude that a
man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. What is
faith? It's the substance of things
hoped for. It's the evidence of things not
seen. Faith is the gift of God that causes us to rely upon the
Lord Jesus Christ alone for all of our justification before God,
all our righteousness. Turn back with me to Psalm 82. That story I was telling about
the lawyer that was tempting the Lord in Luke chapter 10, that's when
the Lord said, Oh, he, the end of that story,
he said, I've done all these, he said, I've done these things.
And no, the Lord said, love the Lord, thy God with all of your
heart and all of your mind, all your soul and love your neighbor as yourself.
And the, and the lawyer said, who's my neighbor? Who's my neighbor?
Who's my neighbor? In just the scripture says, and
in justifying himself, he asked the question, who's my neighbor?
And that's when the Lord told the story about the good Samaritan.
He said a man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell
among thieves and was left for dead. And the priest came by
and saw him and went on the other side of the road. The priest
couldn't help him. And the Levite came by and went
on the other side of the road. Levi couldn't help him. Levi
was a lawyer. The priest was a religious man
who pretended to be interceding on behalf of sinners and they
were unable to help him. We're the one left for dead on
the side of the road, aren't we? That's the effects of sin
that's had on us. And then the Samaritan comes
and takes him and binds his wounds and takes him to the inn and
tells the innkeeper, you take care of him and whatever you
lack, I'll take care of when I come back. There's a picture
of God bringing his wounded, sinful children into the church
and saying to the church, you take care of them and I'll provide
everything you need. Psalm 82, how long will you judge
unjustly? To judge unjustly is to give
men something to do to reconcile themselves with God. Give men
something to do to satisfy the holy demands of God's law. That's
what it means to judge unjustly. And God's saying, you judges. You self-righteous, pharisaical,
false prophets, you're putting my people under the law? This
is exactly what it was talking about, that passage we looked
at in Jeremiah chapter 23. That's what the meaning of this
is. Anybody can see the other part of it. How long will you
judge unjustly and accept the persons of the wicked? defend
the poor and the fatherless, do justice to the afflicted and
needy. Blessed are the poor in spirit. And that word poor means poverty
stricken. It means I object poverty. I
don't have two dimes to rub together. I've got nothing. I can't offer
God anything. I've got no righteousness before
God. I'm poor and needy. I can't justify myself." And the Lord's saying to his
people and to his preachers, he says, judge them righteously. Take care of the poor, the needy,
the fatherless, deliver the poor and the needy, rid them out of
the hand of the wicked. And every time we preach the
gospel, what are we trying to do? We're trying to rid the poor,
the fatherless, the needy, the helpless out of the hand of the
wicked and into the hand of God. They know not, neither will they
understand. They walk on in darkness. All
the foundations of the earth are out of course. Isn't that your excuse? When
you look at the world, all the foundations of the earth are
out of course. Nothing's right. Justice is not
being served in this world. We probably got the best legal
system there is in the world as far as trying to get men to
keep the law and exercise proper justice, and it's a failure. There's no such thing as justice
in this world. And what the Lord's saying here
is that I'm going to exercise perfect justice, perfect justice. My law is gonna be satisfied
in righteousness and in obedience. And when I judge my people, I'm
gonna judge them in my son. I'm going to impute to them the
righteousness of my son and judge them justly and say to every
one of them, Come into the kingdom prepared
for you from the foundation of the world, good and faithful
servant, good and faithful servant. You're perfect. Perfect. Now you're speaking to those.
to those self-righteous Pharisees. He says, I have said you are
gods and all you are children of the most high, but you shall
die like men and fall like one of the princes. And then, and
then Asaph concludes this Psalm by saying, arise, oh God, judge
the earth for thou shall inherit all nations. All men are going
to stand before God. some will be judged well all men I made this statement
a minute ago and I saw some confusing looks all men are going to be
judged on their works they are what I'm saying to you is that
if you're in Christ his works are your works they are your
works so either Christ's works are your works or your works
are your works but all men are going to be judged on their works
scripture is clear on that Arise, oh God. I want. Perfect justice, don't
you? If the foundations be destroyed,
Psalm 113, what can the righteous do? Oh, we have a foundation. We have a place to stand in the
righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ. Foundation is not destroyed. I began this message by quoting
Isaiah chapter 33 and I'll close with it. The Lord is our judge. The Lord is our lawgiver. The Lord is our king and he shall
save us. He shall save us. Our merciful Heavenly Father,
we're thankful for justice served. We're thankful to have an advocate,
Jesus Christ, the righteous one. One who has satisfied all the
demands of thy holy law. One who presents us perfect in
thy sight. Lord, might we come into thy
presence. knowing that the veil has been
rent and trusting confidently Christ our righteousness. For it's in his name we pray.
Amen. Number 14 in the spiral hymnal.
Let's stand together. 14. We don't do this hymn very often,
so let's try and sing it. I'm not sure that's the right
tune, but let's try it. In the Beloved accepted am I. Risen, ascended, and seated on
high, Saved from all sin through His infinite grace, With the
redeemed ones accorded a place. In the Beloved, God's marvelous
grace Calls me to dwell in this wonderful place. God sees my Savior, and then
He sees me In the Beloved, accepted and
