All right, let's take our Bibles
and turn with me to the book of Genesis chapter five. Genesis
chapter five. Before we begin, let's have a
word of prayer. I'm gonna be looking at the first
20 verses of Genesis chapter five. Let's pray together. Our
heavenly Father, we're so thankful that we can be here tonight.
Lord, thank you for your mercy. to allow us to assemble together
in the name of the Lord Jesus. And I ask you, would you bless
the service tonight? Would you help us to worship?
Would you forgive us where we failed you and keep us according
to your good pleasure? Pray for those in our midst that
are sick. I pray that you'd keep them,
watch over us for Christ's sake. Amen. I'm going to begin tonight in
the fifth chapter. The whole chapter five actually
deals with the history from the creation to the birth of Noah's
family. And tonight I'd like for us to
look at the first twenty verses and we'll be looking at the lineage
from Adam to the birth of Enoch. So before we start, I want us
to remember something that we're going to be dealing with some
names of some men that were born in the lineage of the Lord Jesus
Christ, the bloodline of our Savior. And there's names that
we look at, and you're like me, I know. We're prone because of
the frailty of our flesh. to sometimes read and skim over,
which we can't pronounce. But these names are recorded
by the Spirit of God, and we know that all Scripture is given
by inspiration of God, and it's profitable for doctrine, for
reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished, that means
perfectly, throughly furnished, unto all good works. So it's
profitable for us to look at what's set forth in these holy
scriptures. Now, in the generation from Adam
to Enoch, the Spirit of God does not name everyone that was in
each of Adam's posterity and his families, but only the names
and the ages and the deaths of all of those that were found
in the lineage of our Lord, a lineage that truly magnified the humanity
of our blessed Savior, who is truly God. So there are some,
even in the lineage that were not, not
named as far as being in the lineage, but they weren't converted. I'm thinking of one in particular. I'm gonna just read this to you.
You know, Abraham was in the lineage of our Lord, but his
daddy wasn't. Joshua chapter 24, I'll just
read this for you, verses one and two, and Joshua, gathered
all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, and called for the elders of
Israel, and for their heads, and for their judges, and for
their offices, and they presented themselves before the Lord. And
Joshua said unto all the people, thus saith the Lord God of Israel,
your fathers dwelt on the other side of the flood in old time,
even Terah. the father of Abraham, and the
father of Nacar, and they served other gods. So there's amazing,
and the only explanation is this is what God was pleased to do.
I mean, we can just say this, why was one, why was Abraham
called and his daddy wasn't? Pleased God. That's the only,
you know, so we've got a lineage of people that the Lord is pleased
to set forth in these verses that we plan to look at that
were the means by which God used men for the Lord Jesus Christ
in a bloodline to come into this world. Now, what we know is this. Almighty God is pleased, has
been pleased to show mercy to whomsoever he will, and he leaves
another to themselves. Romans 9 21, hath not the potter
power over the clay of the same lump to make one vessel unto
honor and another unto dishonor? I mean, you look at the children
Cain and Abel. What was the difference in those
two boys? Grace of God. They were both sinners. but God
was pleased to use one and pass by another. So these men that
we'll be looking at, this bloodline, they're examples, they're God's
elect, but they're examples of all of the race of God's elect,
types of those that Isaiah was even moved to declare as the
holy seed, Isaiah 6.13, a remnant that shall be saved, of whom
truly, according to Romans 9.5, the Lord Jesus Christ came according
to the flesh. So these are the ones that we'll
be looking at for the next, you know, because you start going
through Genesis and there's some bloodlines that's set forth,
and they're set forth by the Spirit of God for a reason, to
prove It's written down. This is the way it is. This is
how He came. All according to God's purpose. So the scripture
sets forth that these are, as I said, in type of those spoken
of in Deuteronomy 7, 6, Thou art a holy people unto the Lord
thy God. The Lord thy God has chosen thee
to be a special people unto Himself above all people. that are upon
the face of the earth. Now, we know God has an elect. God has a remnant. God's got
a people. And that we're going to consider
a portion of this bloodline as we look tonight. And these that
we're looking at, I mean, think about this. We're going to be
reading some names of some people. We're going to say a few things
about them. It's just gonna say sons and daughters, those that
are not in the bloodline, out of the same family. But these
are our brethren. These are part of the body of
the Lord Jesus Christ. These are, just like we're here
tonight, we're brethren. There's some brethren here. Well,
here's some brethren. And we're gonna learn a few things
that the Lord was pleased to teach us. Now let's look at the
first five verses. Genesis chapter five, verse one.
is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God
created man, in the likeness of man, in the likeness of God,
made he him, male and female, created he them, and blessed
them, called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
And Adam lived 130 years and begat a son in his own likeness
after his image and called his name Seth. And the days of Adam
after he had begotten Seth were 800 years, and he begat sons
and daughters. And all the days that Adam lived
were 930 years, and he died. Now, I went to great lengths
trying to just find some years, some time lengths. You know that
Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible, Genesis, Exodus,
Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. Moses wrote that. And as closely
as I can tell, Moses lived 2,500 years after Adam was born. That's a long time. And this
book, you know, is inspired of God. But the amazing thing is
I was looking at these time frames and these ages and things like
this. Adam, 930 years old, and he had
a son, he had two sons, Cain and Abel. One of them was not
in the bloodline. Cain wasn't in the bloodline
of Christ. All of his perished. Abel was murdered. That was it. But God gave Adam and Eve another
son. His name was Seth. And when you
look at the length of times, and Seth, and this one came down,
we'll start looking at him in just a minute. But when you start
looking at these ages, he lived 930 years. And then here's where
he started right here. He went 930 years. Then he had
a son. His name was Seth. And he went.
And it was coming down. And I got to looking at Methuselah. Methuselah was 969 years old
when he died. And Methuselah, when Methuselah
was born, Adam lived another couple of hundred years or so. What amazed me about this as
I was looking, and I know the Spirit of God moved upon Moses
to write these things, but there were, Neal, some accounts, some
personal accounts, first-hand accounts. Here was Adam, who
lived 930 years, and you come down to all these guys that are
being born in the bloodline of Christ, and they, Adam, would
talk to it, could talk to Methuselah and told him, he said, now this
is what it was. I was there. I can tell you what happened.
My wife was beguiled and I did it with my eyes wide open. I
mean there was a first hand account that was given. And the amazing
thing about how these men would be born and how long they live. But here's this book of the generations
of Adam. Now listen, in the day that God
created man in the likeness of God made he him. Man was created
in the likeness of God. Now here we behold the origin
again. Now we've looked at this in these
first four chapters and the Spirit of God wrote it again. And we're
going to see how God created, in the creation, He created man
last. You know, He made the firmament,
He made the earth, He made the seas, He made the fish, the birds,
he made the creeping things, he made all these things, and
he made man last, proving that man had no involvement whatsoever
in the first creation or in the second regeneration, that new
creation. I thought about that scripture
whenever the Lord said in Job 38.4, where were you? when I laid the foundations of
the earth. So God made man last and prepared
everything for man's temporal comfort and habitation before
he ever created the man. Just as the Lord has been pleased
to prepare everything for man's eternal Habitation, Matthew 25,
34, then said the king unto them on his right hand, come be blessed
of my father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation
of the world. So the Lord made man in God's
image. I'll just touch on a couple of
things that we already looked at. How's that? How is he in
the, it's like a shadow when it says an image. You know, if
you're standing on a bright, sunshiny day and you look at
a shadow, that's a likeness. That's not you, but it's a likeness
of you. How is that? God is omniscient.
God is omniscient. What does that mean? He knows
everything. But man was created in God's image and likeness with
intelligence above all other creatures. Men have the ability
to think and reason. They're not like animals. God's a spirit. God is spirit. And when God created man, he
formed man out of the dust of the earth and he breathed into
him a living soul. What does that mean? It won't
die. It doesn't die. A dog dies, it dies. It's gone. It's not man's soul. Man is a living soul. He's gonna live forever somewhere. God is holy. He's holy. He's single. Single, that's what
it means. Unlike any other, God is holy. And in the likeness of God, man
was created upright. That's what scripture says. What
does that mean? Well, actually, you look at the word, it means
straight. It means straight morally, right. created with a desire
and a longing for fellowship and harmony with God. God is
in harmony and oneness with himself and God is all wise. Man was
created with a conscience. And so man is in God's likeness. God Almighty rules in heaven
and earth and the Lord was pleased to make man in his image and
give man dominion over the fish of the sea, fowl of the air,
and every living thing that moveth upon the earth. So again, God
created man in his likeness, in his shadow. And the scripture
says, and the Lord created man, male and female, and blessed
them. Now, male and female and bless
them with being created as we just looked at, but bless them
also to be able to procreate and maintaining the qualities
that was given Adam by God to procreate for the preservation
and the increase of their kind. And man was blessed to be a picture
and a type of the Lord Jesus Christ and his bride. Man was
created this way. And the scripture says, and he,
that is Adam, called Adam in the day that they, that is male
and female, were created. Adam was male, female. Eve was
in him. God brought her out. But she
was there just as the bride has always been in the Lord Jesus
Christ. And He's bringing them out and
revealing them. But here's the truth of it. It says, verse 2, male and female,
created He them and blessed them and called their name Adam in
the day when they were created. And Adam lived 130 years, begat
a son in his own likeness. Now how did Adam's son come? Adam was created in the likeness
of God, upright. Adam failed though. And what
came out of Adam? A sinner. Seth He had a son,
his name was Seth, and he was created. I mean, not created,
that's the wrong word. Adam lived 130 years and begat
a son. God creates. Man begats. His own image, after his name,
called his name Seth. And I was telling you about that.
That actually was the third one mentioned. He had other sons
and daughters. The one that was mentioned was
Seth, and we'll see this, he was born in the bloodline of
the Lord Jesus Christ. So these two boys that, and this
is the way Seth was born. The two boys, Cain and Abel,
they were sinners, just like everyone from Adam, all of sin,
and come short of the glory of God. And the only profitable
or accepted characteristic before God of one center above another
is not due to anything in the center, believe me. Rather, if God is pleased to
impart life by His Holy Spirit, He does. If He's pleased to leave
that center to the hardness of His own spiritual heart, He does.
Grace does not run in the blood of man. It isn't found from the
desire of men to see, Their loved one's born of God, but men are
born, women are born of God, born of God. So here's the conclusion
of all men that's born into this world. They've all derived their
fallen nature from the first Adam. And all that are everlastingly
loved in Christ derive their new nature from the second Adam. So Adam, Eve, they were created
by God. They fell. In the day that you
eat thereof, you will surely die. Sin is vitally attached
to all of us being descendants of Adam, and righteousness and
truth, holiness, is found only as we are found by God's grace
in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. So the scripture says
in verse 5, well, verse 4, the days of Adam after he had begotten
Seth 800 years, he begat sons and daughters, and I said a while
ago, and when you see it, sons and daughters, he had other kids.
Adam and Eve had other kids. But Seth was named, being in
the bloodline of the Lord Jesus. And all the days of Adam, all
the days that Adam lived, won't you look at that, how that's
written. All the days that Adam lived. lived were 930 years,
and he died. All the days, how many times,
we'll see that's written. Look at verse 8, all the days
of Seth, 900. Look at verse 11, all the days
of Enos, 905. So this, we're reminded man has fallen, He's died spiritually in the
day that he fell, and he's going to die physically. James 4.4,
whereas you know not what shall be on the morrow, for what is
your life? It is even a vapor that appeareth
for a little time and then vanisheth. How old was Adam? Well, the days of his years were
930 years. The days, Lord, teach us to number
our days that we may apply our hearts to wisdom, that we may
apply our hearts unto Christ, who is the wisdom of God. But even in the death of Adam,
speaking of the Adam who died here, we behold the glorious
blessing of all those that die in the faith. This was a real
blessing to me. Psalm 116 verse 15, precious
in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints. The death
of the saints of the Lord is held to be of great value before
the Lord. And that word precious, it means
costly. costly. It means honored, respected,
splendid, and beautiful. I thought precious, it was costly. What did it cost? It cost the
blood of the Lord Jesus Christ, of all those that had been given
unto the Lord Jesus Christ by the Father, those for whom he
laid down his life and everlastingly loved, bride, that shall eternally
be with him. And then we're told after Adam's
death, the Lord was pleased to continue this record of the bloodline
for the glory of the Lord Jesus Christ, verses six to eight.
And Seth lived 105 years and begat Enos. And Seth lived after
he begat Enos 870 years and he begat sons and daughters.
And all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died, and he
died. Now, verse 8, whenever the Lord
was pleased to reveal that Seth had a son, Enos, mankind is what
Enos means, we notice how quickly The hundreds of years are mentioned
as to their brevity. It didn't say anything about
this. I mean, 930 years. Can you imagine how many things
would have been interesting to find out? 930 years. 700 years.
900 and 600. But here's how the Spirit of God sums it up, and he lived. That many years, the days of
his years were, and he died. And he died. Verses 9 to 11. And Enos lived 90 years and begat
Cainan. And Enos lived after he begat
Cainan. 815 years and beget sons and
daughters, and again I'm reminded how many of these overlaps, you
know, all of these first-hand accounts of those that were there
and those that said, and you know how the Jews, how they would
write the records, they were so precise, and it was because
the Spirit of God moved on them to write it that way, to keep
this record a perfect, perfect, perfect record. And all the days,
verse 11, of Enos were 905 years and he died. And Cainan lived
70 years and begat Mehalileel. And Cainan lived, after he begat
Mehalileel, 840 years and begat sons and daughters. And all the
days of Cainan were 910 years and he died. And Mahalaleel, that means the
praise of God is what his name means, lived 65, verse 15, 65
years, begat Jared. And Jared means descent. And
Mahalaleel lived after he begat Jared 830 years and begat sons
and daughters. And all the days of Mahalaleel
were 895 and he died. And Jared lived 162 years and begat Enoch. And Jared lived after he begat
Enoch 800 years and begat sons and daughters. And all the days
of Jared were 962 years, and he died. And he had a boy, last
one had a boy named Enoch. Lord willing, we'll look at Enoch. a picture of Christ next time. But Enoch, his name means dedicated. Dedicated or initiated. Look how the Spirit of God is
pleased to say, now these are the ones. Now here in these closing
statements, I'm going to wrap this up. In these closing verses
right here, we've looked at, we just read the first 20 verses. Little was said about who they
were, but nothing about their lives. Nothing about what they
did for a living. This one begat this one, and
this one begat this one. It was only to declare the lineage
of Christ. Neil, that was the only thing
that mattered. That's the only thing that mattered. So here
we have this bloodline And look at those names, Cainan, Mahalialeel,
Jared, Enoch, Seth, Enos, and just, I'll stop with this. Turn over to Luke 2, Luke chapter
2, and I'm going to read the latter part of verse 37 and verse
38. And I want to show you something
that's so beautiful. Luke, I said Luke 2, I should
have said Luke 3. Luke 3. Alright, look at the
latter part of verse 7. Now if you look at the end of
verse 38, and it starts right there, it starts and it says,
the son of Adam which was the son of God. It's starting to
back them up here. So look at the latter part of
verse 37, and it says, let's say right there where well I'll
just read 37, which was the son of Methuselah, which was the
son of Enoch, now we'll pick up here in this part, but here's
what we just read, which was the son of Jared, which was the
son of Malilil, which was the son of Cainan, which was the
son of Enos, which was the son of Seth, which was the son of
Adam, which was the son of God. You see how it just It's gonna
start off, in Luke, it'll start off with the Lord Jesus Christ.
And he just backs it all the way up and goes all the way back
to God. Just showing you, this is the
perfection of how God was pleased to take and record this bloodline. Somebody said, well, yeah, you
say it's a bloodline. How do you know? It's written
down. This is the book of the generations of Adam. God moved
on a man named Moses. Hundreds, hundreds of years after
Adam was born. But there was an account, a first-hand
account, and the Spirit of God blessed him to give that and
to keep that account, and Moses wrote it down. And we've got
it today. And here's how God Almighty was
pleased to bring His Son into this world, born of a virgin,
made under the law to redeem us who are under the law, made
a curse for us, made Himself a curse that we might not die
in trespasses and sins. He was made like unto His brethren,
and here's the blessed account of it. And as the Spirit of God
unveils these scriptures to us, and shows us how these men, they
were sinners, sinners just like us, saved by the grace of God,
many of them, some not. But God was pleased to bless
in that bringing about to the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ,
and here we are studying it tonight. Thousands of years have passed
since then. And it's just as much alive right
now as it was then. I pray God bless this to our
heart. All right, now we're going to have the Lord's Supper. I've asked, let's see, Mitch
and Fred, why don't you guys come on up, and I'm gonna ask
them, and what we're gonna do, we've got those little, it's
gluten-free little things, We'll have the bread first and so just
take them and we'll eat and drink together. So why don't you guys
go ahead and just pass them out. Thank you.
