Alright, let's take our Bibles
and turn back to Genesis 27. Rebecca, Isaac's wife, has heard him say
to Esau, go get me some venison. I'm going to bless you. And that
blessing, as I said in the first message, was not just a parental, natural blessing. I'm going to bless you with a
blessing ordained of God. You're the Lord's chosen. That's
what Isaac is saying. to Esau, you're the one blessed. You're going to be the one blessed
of God. That blessing started with Abraham. God had told Abraham, Abraham,
I am your shield and your exceeding great reward. And then the Lord told Abraham,
after God had blessed Abraham, He said concerning Abraham's
son Isaac, one now that's getting ready to bless Esau. This is
what God said about Isaac. Genesis 17, 19, Sarah thy wife,
He told Abraham, shall bear thee a son indeed, and thou shalt
call his name Isaac, and I will establish my covenant, that everlasting
covenant of grace. What does that covenant say?
I will have mercy on whom I'll have mercy. That's my glory. That's what He told Moses. I
will establish my covenant with Him for an everlasting covenant
and with His seed after Him. I'm going to bless the seed of
Isaac. Abraham, I'm going to bless you. I'm going to bless your son Isaac.
And I'm going to bless Isaac's seed. Well surely, Isaac thought,
it's got to be the firstborn. It's got to be the one that is
traditionally blessed. So Rebecca heard that. She heard
what Isaac said to Esau. Verses 6 to 10 of Genesis 27.
What is she going to do? I told you the last time, now
she's heard what God has said to her, and she heard what God
said to Eve, concerning the woman's responsibility to be in submission
to her husband. What does she do? Well, the Word
of the Lord is going to stand. She has no option. And Rebekah, verse 6, spake unto
Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto
Esau thy brother, saying, Bring me venison, and make me savory
meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the Lord before my
death. Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that
which I command thee. Go now to the flock. Fetch me
from thence two good kids of the goats, and I will make them
savory meat for thy father such as he loveth. And thou shalt
bring it to thy father that he may eat, and that he may bless
thee before his death." Now, the method Now I want to be just
straight up about what we're talking about here. The method
that Rebecca chose to take concerning the thwarting of Isaac's purpose
to bless Esau can be described by only one word, deception. And we could debate the depth
of that statement from now on, and it's not going to change.
What she's about to do is deceiving. But here's one thing for sure. Now, we might as well just, let's
just, let's just hear what God has to say, and let's don't,
let's don't argue with Him. Let's just hear what the Lord
has to say and bow to what God has to say. what she did originated
in her mind and in her heart from the revelation of Almighty
God to her. Now Almighty God has told her,
the elder is going to serve the younger. Now when the Lord told her that,
she understood. She knew exactly what God was
saying concerning her two boys. Now you listen. I listen. She heard God say to her, one
of your boys, I'm going to show mercy. And one of your boys, I'm going
to reject. And what's the foundation of
that? What is the foundation? Let me
just go back and hold on. I'll just read what we read just
a few minutes ago, Romans 9. What is the foundation for what
God said to her? He's talking to this mother. You mothers, you put yourself
in her place. You've got two kids and God's
told you, I'm going to show mercy to one of your children. And
the other I'm going to reject. Romans 9, 11. The children being not yet born,
neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of
God according to election might stand. Not of works, but of him
that called, if it was written. Jacob have I loved, Esau have
I hated. The elder is going to serve the
younger. What are we going to say? Verse 14 says, is there
unrighteousness with God? Is he the potter? Are we the
clay? What are we going to say to Almighty
God? Now, remember now, we're looking
at a picture here. Rebecca's a picture of the Holy
Spirit. Isaac's a picture of the Father.
Esau's a picture of Christ. Jacob's a picture of the elect.
And here's what Almighty God says, I'm going to bless, I'm
going to bless my elect. I'm going to have mercy on my
elect. So she heard what the Lord said. She knew from the
mouth of God that God had made a distinction between her two
sons according to His purpose. I got kids too. And here's what every one of
us can do. Just be quiet. Whenever God killed
Aaron's two boys, because they took strange fire and God killed
them, Moses told Aaron, he said, don't open your mouth. Don't
open your mouth. What God Almighty does, He does
that which is right, that which is perfect. She knew that God's
choice to show mercy to one and leave the other in a state of
reprobation was made before the children were ever born. The
children not yet being born, neither having done any good
or evil. God's will, God's purpose. She knew that Jacob's dominion
and blessing over his brother Esau, the firstborn, flowed totally
from God's electing grace and love to him. And she knew that
neither she nor Isaac or any other creature has the right
to question. Who art thou, old man, that replyest
against God? Let the rebels of this world
deny what Almighty God has to say concerning Himself. This
is the bottom line. I've looked up this scripture.
I'll read this to you. Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy chapter 18 and verses
18 and 19 concerning what Almighty God
has to say concerning His Word. If I can turn the pages here. There we go. I will raise them up a prophet. And that's with a capital P.
If you wanna look it up. I will raise him up a prophet. I'm gonna
raise up Christ. From among their brethren, like unto thee, and
will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak unto them
as that which I shall command him. It shall come to pass that
whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak
in my name, I will require it of him." What is he saying? Here's
what the Lord has to say. What I say is the way it is. Whether I understand it or not,
it does not change. God Almighty had purposed, I'm
going to bless Jacob. And I'm going to pass by Esau
perfect reason, because I willed it. So we know this, back in
Genesis 27, Rebekah as a picture of the Holy Spirit is going to
reveal to Jacob a picture of the elect. This is what it's
going to take, Jacob, his mama, Rebekah is saying, picture of
the Holy Spirit, this is what it's going to take. for you to
receive the blessing from your father. A picture of receiving
a spiritual blessing from our father. You're going to have
to approach your father in the name and in the position of Esau,
your brother. Why? Because Isaac is purposed. I'm going to bless Esau. I'm
going to bless Esau. And Rebecca tells Jacob, I want
you to go get what I tell you. You get these kids. You bring
these little goat kids to me. I'm going to prepare. What she
did was deception. But what she did was under the
absolute permissive will and pleasure of the Holy Spirit of
God. Now let me make one thing clear.
God is not the author of sin. And we bow to the fact that He
permitted Rebecca to do what she did according to her desire
and all according to the accomplishment of His will. You say, well I
don't see how. That's okay. That's okay that
we don't see it. God said, this is the way it
is. Psalm 33 11, the counsel of the Lord standeth forever,
the thoughts of his heart to all generations. Listen to Proverbs
19 21, there are many devices in a man's heart. Isaac said, I'm going to bless
Esau. Nevertheless, the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.
Isaiah 46, 9, 10, Remember the former things of old, I'm God,
there's none else, I'm God, there's none like me, declaring the end
from the beginning, from ancient times, the things that are not
yet done, saying my counsels sustain, I will do all my pleasure. Jacob, Rebecca says, a picture
of the Spirit of God. You go get and fetch me two good
kids of the goats. I'm going to tell you this is
the only way that you're going to get the blessing. Isaac is
going to bless. Isaac is going to bless. But
you're going to get the blessing, but the only way you're going
to get it is you're going to have to go before your father
in the name and in the position of your brother Esau. Here's
that beautiful type and picture. It's set forth concerning the
satisfaction. What does Isaac love? He loves that savory meat. He loves that precious meat. I love this. And here's what
the Spirit of God is saying through the person of Rebecca to Jacob
and all the Jacobs that are here this morning, like him, in nature,
sinners, supplanters, liars, cheater, deceiver. Here's what
it's going to take. It's going to take absolute satisfaction
to God's justice. Now, what did she tell him to
get? She said, I want you to go and
you fetch from the flock two good kids of the goats. You know
there's one other place in Scripture where two goats were brought
to the priest. It was in the book of Leviticus,
chapter 16. on the day of atonement. The
scripture says Leviticus 16, I'll read this to you, 7 to 10. These two goats were brought
to Aaron the priest. It says, and he shall take the
two goats and present them before the Lord at the door of the tabernacle
of the congregation. And Aaron shall cast lots upon
the two goats, one lot for the Lord, the other lot for the scapegoat.
And Aaron shall bring the goats upon which the Lord's lot fell,
and offer Him for a sin offering. But the goat on which the lot
fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before the
Lord to make an atonement with Him, and let Him go for a scapegoat
into the wilderness." Here's what it's going to take. Two
goats were presented to the priest. Two of them. Two goats. Lots were cast. Whichever lot
fell on whichever goat, this is the goat for the Lord. What does that mean? That goat
is going to die. Aaron took his hands and confessed all the sins
of the nation of Israel on the head of that goat. And that goat
had its throat cut and sacrificed. This other one had all its sins. That goat was led off into the
wilderness. What was being presented there?
This is what it's going to take to get a blessing from God. It's
going to have to have absolute satisfaction to the justice of
God. Sin is going to be dealt with. And those sins are going
to have to be carried away as far as the east is from the west,
behind into the sea of God's forgetfulness. What is it going
to take? for Jacob to be blessed of his
father. Something's going to have to
be presented to Isaac, the father that Isaac loves. Here's the
beautiful picture. What does the father, the heavenly
father, love? Before he's going to bless, he's
going to have to be satisfied. That sweet smelling savor of
that burnt offering, the Lord Jesus Christ when He laid down
His life of obedience, laid down His life for the sheep, that
savory scent of obedience by Him to the Father, accomplishing
the Father's will to show mercy, compassion, and Christ bore their
guilt and put it away. And the Father says, I love that smell. the smell
of my precious son's obedience. Rebecca said to Jacob, you go
get me those two kids. You're going to be accepted.
You're going to have to be accepted on the merit of that which your
father loves, savors. He loved that scent. He loved
that meat of Esau, but what did it picture? It pictured the satisfaction. And Scripture says in Genesis
27, 11 and 12, And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold,
Esau, my brother, is a hairy man, I am a smooth man. And my
father, peradventure, will field me, and I shall seem to him as
a deceiver, and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing. What's he saying? Jacob is vividly
aware of the difference between himself and his elder brother. There's a beautiful reminder
of the glory of Christ and our utter depravity. Who is the Father
going to bless? He's going to bless His Son.
The Heavenly Father is going to bless the Lord Jesus Christ
for His obedience. How am I? going to be blessed
of God. How am I going to receive? I'm
a smooth man, Esau's a hairy man, and that perplexed Jacob. What am I going to do when I
stand before my dad? Jacob is saying. And he feels
me. And he discovers that I'm a fraud. Every believer, every vessel
of God's mercy is vividly aware of what he is in himself. I'm going to stand before my
daddy, Jacob said. He's going to touch me and immediately
he's going to know I'm not Esau. Now you stop and
think for a minute. for us to stand before Almighty
God. And here is the total exposure
of this lie that's being told to men and women today, that
you can do something and just stand before God, and God's going
to accept you on the merit of what you did. And you remember,
He's going to be satisfied only in that absolute obedience of
His Son. Perfection. Perfection. Holiness. Holiness. Can you imagine standing
before God and trying to confess your baptism or your profession
of faith or your church membership? Whatever. Whatever. Isaac is
saying, my daddy is going to touch me and he's going to know
I'm not the one he's purposed to bless. A believer is going
to say this, Almighty God is going to know, I'm a fraud. I'm a liar. I'm a Jacob. I'm a supplanter. Here's what
a believer says, I acknowledge my transgressions and my sin
is ever before me. What he was about to do was deception. He knew that. And to be discovered
as a deceiver, he was opening himself up to be receiving nothing
but a curse. That's what he said. My father
perventure will fill me, verse 12, and I shall seem to him as
a deceiver. I shall bring a curse upon me and not a blessing. Do you think that's ever going
to happen? Many. will say to me in that day, Lord,
Lord, we prophesied in your name and cast out devils in your name
and done many, many works in your name. And he's gonna feel
them and say, I never knew you. You're not my son. You're not
my son. You're not the one that I've
purposed to save. You're not the one that I purpose to bless.
Depart from me. You workers of iniquity. Jacob knew that what he was in
himself was not the one that God had purposed to bless. Rebecca made a statement that
many commentators, I can actually admit, They call either the height
of arrogance or ignorance or presumption, but if I err not,
and I don't. I don't. I don't err. I know
this. I don't err here because I know
what God's going to do. I see this as the greatest statement
of faith on that woman's part in God's Word. When Jacob declared
his fear of being discovered before his father as being a
fraud, Now having received God's word
and promise concerning God's pleasure to bless Jacob, the
one that he loved, this woman, based on what God had said to
her, the elder is going to serve the younger. I'm going to bless
Jacob. I love Jacob. Jacob's going to
get the blessing. And here's this woman in absolute
faith, and here's what she says. His mother said unto him, upon
me, be thy curse, my son, only obey my voice, and go fetch me
them. You go get those two goats. I'm
telling you, this is the only way you're going to get the blessing.
Upon me. Now, here's the amazing thing,
humanly speaking, the way she handled this, we can call into
question. You know her actions, but one
thing is for sure. This woman believed God. She believed God. We ought to
obey God rather than men. She knows what God has said concerning
her submission to her husband. But this is what the Lord told
her. She's going to say just like
Job. Job 13, verse 5, Yet will I trust Him. But I will
maintain my own way before Him. I'm going to believe God. My
daddy is going to feel me, Isaac said, Jacob said, and he's going
to know I'm a fraud. Mom, I'm going to get a curse. She said, my son, you obey my
voice and you fetch me them and let the curse be on me and not
on you. Psalm 25.2, Oh my God, I trust
in Thee, let me not be ashamed, let not my enemies triumph over
me. This is what God told me He was
going to do. But there was one more detail
as we're working up. Now this second message right
here is the preparation for the blessing. Lord willing, the next
message is going to be the actual blessing. when Jacob goes before
Esau, goes before Isaac, when Jacob goes before his daddy,
Isaac, and he's going to walk in there, and his daddy's going
to ask him something. He's going to say, are you Esau? And he's going to say, yep. And
he's going to ask him again. He said, my son, are you truly
Esau? And Jacob is going to say, yes. The depth of that statement is
this, when a sinner stands before God and Almighty God has purpose
to bless one. One. Are you my son? Now that's a yes or no answer. That's a yes or no answer. If you say no, I can tell you
what's going to happen. He's going to cast you out. We'll
deal with that next time. The scripture says, she told
him, she said, you go get me the savory meat. In verses 15
to 17, this is where we'll stop. Rebecca took goodly Raymond of
her eldest son Esau. which were with her in the house
and she put them upon Jacob her younger son and she put the skins
of the kids of the goats upon his hands and upon the smooth
of his neck and she gave the savory meat and the bread which
she had prepared into the hand of her son Jacob. Rebecca took
that goodly garment, who did that garment belong to? It belonged
to Isaac. It belonged to Esau, excuse me
for mixing up these words. I'll correct them, but just forgive
me. That was Esau's garment. That was Esau's garment. She
took the goodly raiment, the desirable garment of Esau, which
is a fit and beautiful picture and type of the righteousness
of Christ. Now you remember this, Esau is
a picture of Christ. The one that Isaac, his purpose
to bless, That's Esau's garment. She took that garment of Esau,
and she put that garment on Jacob. And she took the skins of the
kids of the goat. Now, let me tell you the first
thing that that pictures. That picture's sacrifice. How
did those skins, where'd she get those skins? Those goats
had to die. He had two goats. That was a
picture on that Day of Atonement. Those two goats. One that paid
for the debt, the other that took it away. Both of them a
picture of Christ. And she took those skins of that goat. I read
where it was very, very soft. Very, very soft. Just like human
hair. It felt just like human hair.
Very, very soft, soft skin. She took those skins and she
put that upon Jacob's hands and on his neck, covering him with
that which is going to satisfy Isaac and his desire to bless
Esau. Oh, how beautifully we see the
Holy Spirit's revelation that only in Christ, only in the Lord
Jesus, robed in His blessed righteousness, completely hidden in Him can
a sinner approach and be accepted, except in the Beloved. And she
gave him that savory meat which Isaac loved. She gave him that
bread, a picture of the bread of heaven himself. And here's
Jacob now. Who is he? He's a sinner. He's a sinner. He's a fraud. He's a fraud. But let me ask
you this, what are we? How are we going to be accepted
of God? One way, we're going to approach
Him robed only in the righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ. Covered
in Him. Found in Him. And she said, now
you take this. And you take this to your daddy. I want you to notice in verse
17, and I'll hush. She gave. Who is she? That's his mama. Yeah, that's
right. But she's a picture of the Holy Spirit. She gave the
savory meat and the bread. What was Esau told to do? You
go get it, you kill it, you fix it, you bring it to me." And
God said, I'm not going to bless that. Here, she which pictures
the Holy Spirit, gave the savory meat and the bread which she
had prepared into the hand of Jacob. Almighty God, in His infinite
mercy and grace, that which we present before the Father, in
the acceptance of being found in Christ, what God demands,
God must give. That's the only thing God's going
to accept. She has now prepared this vessel
of God's mercy. The one who in himself, he's
a liar, he's a deceiver, he's a fraud, but robed in that precious
garment, covered with the skins Isaac is going to see one in
his heart. Who is Isaac going to bless?
He's going to bless Esau, a picture of Christ. But who is the one
that's going to receive the blessing from Esau being the one that's
actually rejected? Who's going to get the blessing
for that? Jacob. Jacob. May the Lord bless these
words to our heart and prepare our hearts for that presentation,
Lord willing, next time. For His honor and His glory and
for our good. Amen.
