31 And Barzillai the Gileadite came down from Rogelim, and went over Jordan with the king, to conduct him over Jordan.
32 Now Barzillai was a very aged man, even fourscore years old: and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay at Mahanaim; for he was a very great man.
33 And the king said unto Barzillai, Come thou over with me, and I will feed thee with me in Jerusalem.
34 And Barzillai said unto the king, How long have I to live, that I should go up with the king unto Jerusalem?
35 I am this day fourscore years old: and can I discern between good and evil? can thy servant taste what I eat or what I drink? can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto my lord the king?
36 Thy servant will go a little way over Jordan with the king: and why should the king recompense it me with such a reward?
37 Let thy servant, I pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and be buried by the grave of my father and of my mother. But behold thy servant Chimham; let him go over with my lord the king; and do to him what shall seem good unto thee.
38 And the king answered, Chimham shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which shall seem good unto thee: and whatsoever thou shalt require of me, that will I do for thee.
39 And all the people went over Jordan. And when the king was come over, the king kissed Barzillai, and blessed him; and he returned unto his own place.
40 Then the king went on to Gilgal, and Chimham went on with him: and all the people of Judah conducted the king, and also half the people of Israel.

Verse 31, 2 Samuel 19, 31. Now think about this. Y'all should
know by now what I'm gonna say. Some of y'all been hearing me
for 16 years this past New Year's Day. 16 years, you should know. I should just be able to read
my text and we go home. By now, verse 31 in Barzillai
is how you pronounce that, but you know, we don't pronounce
any of these names right, but Barzillai. The Gileadot came
down from Rogallum and went over Jordan with the king to conduct
him over Jordan. Now, Barzillai, I'm just gonna
call him Barzillai, because that's what it looks like. Barzillai
was a very aged man, even four score years old. He was 80 years
old, and he had provided the king of sustenance while he lay
at Mayanaim, for he was a very great man. And the king said
unto Barzillai, come thou over with me, and I
will feed thee with me in Jerusalem. And Barzillai said unto the king,
how long have I to live that I should go up with the king
unto Jerusalem? I am this day fourscore years
old, and can I discern between good and evil? Can thy servant
taste what I eat or what I drink? Can I hear any more the voice
of singing men and singing women? Wherefore then should thy servant
be yet a burden unto my lord the king? Thy servant will go
a little way over Jordan with the king, And why should the
king recommence at me with such a reward? Let thy servant, I
pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and
be buried by the grave of my father and my mother. But behold thy servant, Kimum. Let him go over with my lord
the king. And do to him what shall seem
good unto thee. And the king answered, Chemum
shall go over with me, and I will do to him that which seem good
unto thee. And whatsoever thou shalt require
of me, that will I do for you. And all
the people went over Jordan, and when the king was come over,
the king kissed Barzillion and blessed him. and he returned
unto his own place. Then the king went on to Gilgal,
and Khimim went on with him, and all the people of Judah conducted
the king, and also half the people of Israel. Let's ask the Lord
to bless us tonight. Thank you, our gracious Father, for your precious, precious word.
May your sheep be comforted tonight. And most of all, Lord, may our
Lord Jesus Christ be exalted, honored, worshiped. How worthy
he is and how pitiful we are. We need your presence. We need
your blessing. We need your spirit, Lord, to show us the things of
our Savior and to touch our hearts, open our hearts that we might
receive your glory in the preaching of your Son. Thank you for all
your blessings, Lord. In Christ's name we pray, amen.
Now it says that Barzillio was a very great man and that he
had given the king sustenance. Where we read there in our text,
it says that he had given the king sustenance, and where that happened
was in chapter 17. If you'll look over there just
for a minute, verse 27, chapter 17. And it came to pass, when David
was come to Maanaum, and this is when David was in exile, when
Absalom had driven him from his home and from the throne, he's
in exile with those who were loyal to him. Verse 27, he was
come to Maanaum, and that's leaving town, that's being driven out,
that Shobai the son of Nahash of Rabah, of the children of
Ammon, and Makar the son of Amul, of Lodibar and Barzillia, the
Gileadite of Rogelum, brought beds and basins and earthen vessels
and wheat and barley and flour and parched corn and beans and
lentils and parched pulse and honey and butter and sheep and
cheese of kind for David and for the people that were with
him to eat. For they said, the people is hungry and weary and
thirsty. in the wilderness. What a blessing
that was to see that. They didn't say, well, you know,
everything will be all right. They said, they're hungry. Let's
do something about it. Let's help them. And I like that. We need to understand also here
that Brasilia, this wasn't just material cost to him. This was choosing a side. This
was choosing a side in a life or death matter. If Absalom wins,
he puts the hit out on everybody that helps David, and everybody
knows it. So this is important, and this
is the first consideration of our subject tonight, and we get
a title for the subject from verse 32, a very great man, a
great man, that's the title, a great man. This is who the Lord calls a
great man. That should be important to us.
That should be important. And if we just stopped right
here and just talked about it, we could probably come up with
some things that the Lord would count as greatness. We know this,
I'll tell you this, God has a universe because he's gonna honor his
son. Does that have anything to do with our text? Barzillia,
he just wanted to honor David. A great man is one who honors
the king, God's king, his king, no matter what, no matter the
cost, no matter the danger, no matter what. And that's what
the Barcelii represents here. Maybe it would be better, Barcelii,
not to choose a side here. Let's just lay low and see what
happens. We don't know who's going to win this thing. But
this is God's king, so that just won't do. It won't do. It won't do for you and me either.
That's what God impressed on me here. It's not gonna do for
us to sit it out. Oh, he that woreth entangleth
not himself in the affairs of this life, that he may please
him who hath chosen him to be a soldier. That's what Paul said. This is God's king. I'm sure
somebody else, you know, will give the king what's needed.
Somebody, it seems like it always works out, you know, that somebody,
that won't do. That won't do. Our king is hated and maligned. Absalom, Antichrist, has stolen
their hearts. If we're gonna get along with
people, you know, we're gonna have to downplay our love for
David. That won't do. He said, if you deny me before
men, I'll deny you before my father. But if you confess me
before men, think about what it means for the son of God to
confess you before his father, which is in heaven. He's God's
king, and by God's grace, he's my king. So we've chosen, haven't we,
by his grace. We love him because he loved
us first. We choose him because he first chose us. And I'll tell
you this, it might sound strange at first for you to hear me say
this, I want to be a great man. I really do. You might think,
well, boy, that's kind of vain, Chris. Well, you better want
to be great too. But we have to understand a couple
of things about that from the scripture. What this world calls
great is something else from what God calls great. And how
that happens is not the way this world thinks either. If we're
going to be great, it's going to be by his grace. We're going
to have to be mercy beggars if we're going to be great. I don't care what this world
thinks. I don't care if this world thinks anything of me or
not. I don't mean great in the sense
of personal achievement. I mean great in the sense that
God called this man great in our text, loyal to his king. And again, not for personal gain. You think about this. Somebody
thought that Barzillai was playing the odds here. You know, he thought
he, you know, he remembered maybe what David did to Goliath. The
odds weren't really good then either. You know, it didn't look
good for David, but he came out on top. And even though the numbers
are against him now, Absalom's stolen all the hearts of the
people, don't look good. But David just always seems to
go, I'm gonna put my money on him. I think it's gonna work
out. And then I'm gonna be rewarded in the end. Don't want anything. Just wanna
honor the king. People might think that about
him, but they'd be wrong. They'd be wrong. And the proof
of that is not in words. It's in actions. If you wanna
know why people do what they do, watch everything that they
do. And look at verse 36 in our text
with the last part of verse 35. The very last part of verse,
he said, wherefore then should thy servant be yet a burden unto
my lord the king? Thy servant will go a little
way over with the king. And why should the king? recompense
it me with such a great reward. I'd just be a burden to you.
David's saying what he did to me. He said, I'm gonna feed you.
He wasn't talking about that day. He's talking about from
now on. You're gonna sit at my table from now on. No, I'd just
be a burden to you. And besides, I don't deserve
Why would you recompense anything to me? I didn't do anything.
That's the attitude of God's sheep. Our Lord said in the last
day, he's gonna say, when I was hungry, you gave me something
to eat. When I was thirsty, you brought me a cold drink of water.
When I was in prison, you came and visited me. And his people
are gonna say, Lord, when? When did we ever do anything
worth doing? And it's the truth. If we do
anything, as we've seen so many times, it's Him doing something.
He works in us to want to and to do it. Religion talk about, you know,
what Barzillai did, he didn't do for personal gain or to get
something back. Religion talks about planting
a seed. You know what they mean by that, don't you? Give some
money. Why can't they just say what it is? Give some money.
I'm not ashamed of that, are you? We need to give some money
so we can do what we do here. Anything wrong with saying that?
Why don't they just be honest about it? Let's just call it
what it is. But if you plant a seed, God will return you tenfold. That's not giving, that's an
investment. I saw that David and all of the
people that were with him, and think about that, hundreds of
people now, they were greatly outnumbered, no question about
it, but there were hundreds of them. How are we gonna do something
about that? Well, the Lord's blessed us,
we can do it, let's do it. And he saw that, remember what
they said? They didn't just say, well, I
hope everything, the Lord taught us that, didn't he, in the New
Testament. To say be warmed and filled and don't do anything
about it, to wish people well and don't do anything about it
is worthless. They said they need some things. And so they
did something about it. And I'll tell you this, they
went beyond the necessities. And he wasn't stingy about it.
He didn't sit there and say, well, they're going to need some
food, but they're not going to need any honey. They won't need
none of my honey. I might say that when you come over to my
house. We'll have a good dinner. They don't need any of my honey. Jack and I used to joke about
that. He'd hide the honey when I came over. And that's true. They didn't
need any honey to win a war, did they? Well, they got it,
though. They got it. Remember this scripture now,
2 Corinthians 9, 7. Every man according as he purposeth
in his heart, so let him give. Not grudgingly. Not grudgingly. Not, well, they don't need no
honey. Nor of necessity, nor because you're supposed to. Don't
give because you're supposed to. I don't do things for my
family because I'm supposed to, do you? Don't give like that. That's what it says in 2 Corinthians
9, 7. Don't give because you're supposed to. And so we don't
preach you're supposed to give. Why would I sit here and preach
you're supposed to give if you're not supposed to give because
you're supposed to? What we do is we preach Christ
and those that love him are gonna give. For God loveth a cheerful giver. You can tell by what Barzillia
gave and how much he gave that he was that kind of giver. And
God said he's a very great man. You remember what it says about
John the Baptist? This is not in my knowledge.
I don't want to go too long on that, but listen. No greater
man was ever born of a woman than John the Baptist. What do
we know about John the Baptist? Everywhere he went, There's God's
lamb that takes away sin. I'm not worthy to untie his shoes. There's one that come after me
that's greater than me. Let me tell you about him. And he didn't expect anything
in return. Well, like Zacchaeus, when the Lord saved him. We just
saw Zacchaeus recently, didn't we? All of a sudden, he's a generous
man, isn't he? Why? Because he'd met the Lord.
He'd met the Lord. His motivation wasn't personal
gain anymore. It was what's right. You know
what's right? What honors Christ. If it costs me some money or
if it costs me my life. That's what's right. It could
have cost Barzillai his life, and he was okay with that. Remember
again what Paul wrote in Acts 20, 22. And now, behold, I go
bound in the Spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall
befall me there, save that the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every
city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. but none of these things
move me. Neither count I my life dear
unto myself so that I might finish my course with joy and the ministry
which I have received of the Lord Jesus. That's who David's
picturing in our text. To testify the gospel of the
grace of God. Now this is how greatness is
measured in God's estimation. Here it is. What think ye of
Christ? And that's how it's measured.
And what think ye of Christ is measured in what you do. It's not what you say. As James
wrote in his epistle, he said, don't tell me about your faith
in Christ, show it to me. Show it to me. The faith that Christ is the
author of, he is also the object of, and he is the finisher of,
and that faith, James said, works. It works. Think about this now. Think about this to what Paul
said in 2 Corinthians 8. And if you read that chapter,
it's all about giving and supporting the ministry, supporting the
gospel. He said, I speak not by commandment. We just read not, not, not out
of necessity. It's not about, we're not under
the law. We're under grace. What is it about then if it's
not about, you know, doing what God said, but by occasion of
the fraudness of others, As I have an example to give to you of
generosity, I'm gonna tell you about it. And to prove the sincerity
of your love. It's not about commandment, it's
about love. We're not under the law, we're
under his grace. And it's the love of Christ that
constraineth us. For Paul said, we thus judge.
Not if we don't do what God said we're gonna go to hell. We don't
judge things that way anymore. We judge things this way. If
he lived and died for us, it's because we were all goners. And
since he lived and died for me, we ought to live for him. That's
how we judge things. So what was great about this
man? He loved David. It's obvious that he did. He
loved God's chosen, God's ordained authority. He bowed to him, and
he did everything he could to honor him. He was generous. Love always is accompanied by
generosity. I don't consider myself a very
generous man, but I'll tell you this, if you look down through
my life, the history of my life, and find out where I have given
and expected nothing in return, you'll find that it's been for
people that I love. And I suspect it's the same way
with you. The ones I love the most. And that's just the way
it is now. He was bold in his allegiance
to his Lord. Like Paul said, I count not my
life dear unto myself. How many people can honestly
say that? I don't count my life dear unto
myself for this reason. Life is not cheap to believers.
It's not about that. It's compared to his honor and
glory. Our lives are nothing. Another thing about this great
man, he was humble, wasn't he? He said, I'm not going to be
any good to you. Did you see where he said, I don't even know
good from evil anymore? I'm 80 years old. He wasn't saying
he didn't know right from wrong. He wasn't saying he forgot the
word of God and that he didn't know the difference between right
and wrong. What he's basically saying there is, I wouldn't make
a good counselor to you. I don't know what to do. I can't
think like that. My mind isn't keen anymore concerning
matters of what's best. be a worthy companion to you.
I'd just be a burden to you. Verse 35. Think about this now, when he
thought he could be a help, he was all in. Whatever I can
do. He went above and beyond. But
when it came to the place where it wouldn't be best for David,
for him to be involved, He backed off. That's key now. That's key. That's a great man
right there. By the grace of God, he was a
great man. And this is my prayer for us,
myself, and for you. May we never, ever, ever be a
burden on the ministry of our Lord. If we can help, do it with
all your heart. But if you need to stay out of
it, stay out of it, whatever it is. Some people want to be involved,
whether it helps or hurt, it doesn't matter. As long as I'm
in, you know, get some recognition. That's what so-called churches
or religious organizations around this world are full of, people
like that. I've seen it firsthand. And God
forbid that we ever do or say anything that would dishonor
our Lord or his gospel. I'll tell you
something else. Barzillia, I trusted David. He
trusted him with that which was most precious to him. Chimam is the way you say that
one, in case you were interested. Chimam. In verse 37 and everybody
said it was either his son or his grandson He's 80 years old. It may have been his grandson
traveling with him. I don't know But look at those words do with
him what seems good to you a Great man Trusts the one that
God trusts Now God didn't trust David, you understand that. God
has, what was it that Paul said to Timothy? He's entrusted us
to be stewards of his grace. That doesn't mean he trusts your
flesh. That just means he's given us some responsibility that's
way beyond us. But I'll tell you this, those
he entrusts, he fits, he changes, he makes them able to meet that challenge. He is
their strength. Paul said, we plant and we water.
Those that plant and water are nothing. The Lord is the one
that gives the inquiry. Do with him what seems good to
you. He didn't say, take good care of him now, you know. That's
how we talk normally. Take good care. He said, just
do whatever's good. That'll be best, won't it? If
it's God's king. Do what seems good to you. He knew that David would do what's
right and good. That's God's man. That's God's
chosen, anointed king. And here's the question for us.
Do you trust the son of God? Do you trust him? Do you act
like it? Do I act like I do? He committed that which was most
precious to God's man. You know, first
I'm going to quote Paul, I know whom I believe and I'm persuaded.
Ain't nothing to discuss. I'm persuaded that he's able
to keep that which I've committed unto him. What have you committed
to the Lord? I can answer that question for
every believer. Is there anything you haven't
committed to him? Honestly. You don't have to come up and
do some kind of religious ceremony to dedicate your children to
the Lord. A believer every day, they say, Lord, take care of,
do what seems good unto you with them. I'm persuaded he's able to keep
that which I've committed unto him against that day. Christ
crucified is sufficient. We trust the person of Christ
who gave himself for us. His righteousness is enough.
A sinner is going to have to stand in the righteousness of
Christ if we're going to stand before God. And to stand in Him is enough. His blood is enough. He washed our sins away in his
precious blood. Satisfied the justice of God
against each of us. And nothing is needed for me. We don't need a savior that needs
us. God trusted him, and by his grace
I do too. God delights in him, and by his
grace I do too. God honors his son, and by his
grace, I sure do wanna honor him, don't you? He is God's only begotten, well-beloved
son, and I wanna love him with all my heart. Listen to 1 Samuel 3, 18. Samuel
told Eli what God had told Samuel, that he was gonna kill Eli's
children. They were perverse and godless, and they deserved
it. And here's what Eli said about
that. God's gonna kill my children. It is the Lord. Let him do what
seemeth him good. Remember what David said in chapter
15 of 2 Samuel. We just saw this not too long
ago. The king, David, said to Zadok, and they brought the ark
of God down again. David's leaving town in shame
and disgrace, and they brought the ark down, and he said, take
it back. The ark belongs in Jerusalem. Don't bring it with us. If I
shall find favor in the eyes of the Lord, he'll bring me back
again to him. and show me both it and his habitation. But if he thus say, I have no
delight in thee, behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth
good unto him. Do you trust in the Lord Jesus
Christ? Do you trust him? You're gonna
have to. You're gonna have to. You see,
he's gonna do what he wants with you anyway. He's gonna do what
seems good to him with you and with me. And a few people in
this world like it that way. In this very chapter, chapter
19 of 2 Samuel, Mephibosheth said concerning Ziba, remember
in verse 27, he said, Ziba slandered me unto my lord the king, but
my lord the king is as an angel of God. Do therefore what is
good in thine eyes. And that's a message in itself. You look at all of the places
where that was said and what it was said about, and there's
a whole other sermon in there. Think about this. Prayer is not
telling God what to do. Now, we can pray about specific
things. There's nothing wrong with that.
But think about this, no believer would ever presume to tell God
what to do. Really? He does everything well,
you don't. He knows everything, you don't. He knows what's good and what
ain't, you don't. He knows you better than you
do. He knows what's good for you,
you don't. He knows what's good for those you love, you don't.
Why would anybody ever want to tell God what to do? What we
do is we say, Lord, Whatever's good to you is good. That's the way we pray. Not my will, but thine be done. There's nothing wrong with making
your supplications known before him, but in the end now, we want
him to do what pleases him. Because what pleases him is what's
right and what's good for me. And honoring to him. Do what
seemeth good to you. That's faith. That's faith. Barzillai was a man of faith.
He trusted God's King and he was a great man. The Lord's King
does all things well. And boy, I wish we knew that
every second of every day, don't you? He does all things well. I like Barzillai's attitude about
himself. I don't have very long to live. Therefore, this shouldn't be
about me. Can you be that honest? Marzilia,
he was honest about it. He said, I'm 80 years old. He
said, I can't even taste anything anymore. I can relate to that
a little bit. I can't taste stuff like I used
to. I haven't smelled anything in four or five months now. I'm
serious. Just a little here and there,
just a little bit. It comes back for just a couple
of minutes. But as we get older, he said,
I can't. And notice what he said. He didn't say, I can't hear what
people say. He said, I can't hear men sing
or women sing. There's some heartache in that
in there. I wish I could hear. That's something
that's beautiful and a blessing to the heart to hear singing.
And I can't enjoy that like I did. But he was honest about it. He
said, and look at this question in verse 34. Look at verse 34
again. And I wanna paraphrase this question.
I'm not adding anything to the word of God. I'm just, I'm gonna
expound on it as the question is read here. He said, how long
have I to live that I should go up to Jerusalem with you? How long have I to live that
this should be about me at all, that you should be concerned
about me? This shouldn't be about me anymore, that I should live
in comfort and ease. This is about your honor and
your glory. This is your day, not mine. This
is the glory of God's King. And this is the same attitude
with which he gave David those things in chapter 17. What is
this stuff? What good is this if it's no
good to David? Can you ask that about what you
have? What good is everything you have if it's no good to Christ?
If it's not gonna honor him, what good is it? If God made
a universe to honor his son, then what good am I in anything
I have or can do or can say if it's not gonna honor him? What's
the point of it? Have you ever asked yourself
that question that he asked? How long have I to live? How
long have I to live? You know what David said in Psalm
90 verse 12? He said, Lord, teach us to number
our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Barzillai
has numbered his days, and you know what he cares about? Not
his own comfort and ease and luxury. God's king. That's what
you call applying your heart to wisdom. May God give us that
grace. May he teach us to, how long
have I, what is my life, what am I? This is about him. He acted in a way that was honoring
to God and not in a selfish way. I wanna be like that, don't you?
It'd been nice, 80 years old or whatever years old. As an
old man, it would be nice to live in the king's house, wouldn't
it? He said, I don't need that. I'll tell you something else
about a great man. Well, this text is such a blessing to me.
Barzillai was 80 years old, and death was not a fearful thing
to him. He was ready. Verse 37. Let thy servant, I
pray thee, turn back again, that I may die in mine own city, and
be buried by the grave of my father and my mother. I've known older believers that
embraced death like that because they knew that the death of this
body is not death in any real sense. The Lord said, he that
liveth and believeth in me will never die. Do you believe this? I want you to look at something
with me. First Corinthians chapter 15. Let's look at a couple of
passages together as we close. He wasn't afraid to die. He said,
let me go die. Can we look at it like that? Happy to die with God's king
on the throne. First Corinthians 1550. Now this
I say, brethren, that flesh and blood can't inherit the kingdom
of God, neither does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold,
I show you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we
shall all be changed. Not everybody's gonna die even
physically. When the Lord comes back to this
earth, there'll be some that are still alive. Those which
are alive and remain shall be caught up together to meet him. Caught up together to see the
gates of Pearl. Now, to meet him, to meet him,
that's what glory is. We're not all gonna sleep, but
we're all gonna be changed. In a moment, in the twinkling
of an eye, at the last trump, for the trumpet shall sound and
the dead shall be raised incorruptible. And we shall be changed. Aren't you glad? Oh boy, that's good. We're going
to be changed. We're not going to be like this
anymore. We're not going to be selfish. We're not going to be
self-righteous. We're not going to be proud anymore.
We're not going to have to say anymore, what I want to do, I
can't do. And the last thing I want to
do, that's what I do. We're not gonna have to say that
anymore. We're gonna be changed, for this corruptible must put
on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when
this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal
shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass
the saying that is written, death is swallowed up in victory. And seeing that all that's true,
God is going to- remember in another place Paul said he's
able according to the power wherewith he worketh all things he's able
to change our vile bodies and make them lack unto his glorious
body. That's what he's going to do.
That's what he just described. And seeing that's true what shall
we say then? Oh death where is thy sting? That's what Barzillai is saying
let me go die I'm ready. Simeon saw the Lord Jesus Christ
as a little baby and said, Lord, let thy servant now depart in
peace. Mine eyes have seen thy salvation.
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? And the sting of death is sin.
You think about what he's saying here. How can I say, oh, death,
where is that sting? How can I be afraid to die? How
can it be a bad thing? How can we look at death as a
bad thing as believers? The strength of sin is the law,
and Christ honored every wit, every jot and tittle of the law
in our place before God. He took the sting away. And death? It has no dominion over us. It
couldn't hold him and it can't hold anybody that he rose for.
The sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law,
but thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord
Jesus Christ. Christ honored the law of God
for me. Christ paid my sin debt for me.
I'm ready to die. How about you? Why? Because mine eyes have seen
his salvation. One final thought here, I think,
maybe one or two. Barzillai wanted his son or grandson,
whoever this one was, that he committed to David's trust. He
wanted him to serve the king. Whatever you tell him to do,
you do whatever you want to. He's gonna serve you. He's gonna
serve you. If it please you, let it be. talk about that in a minute,
but turn to 3 John verse 1. 3 John right before Jude and
Revelation, 3 John chapter 1 verse 2. Listen to what he said now,
this is something that every believer also now. Not only do
we commit our children to Him, we want them to serve Him. To
go with Him, to follow Him, to be with Him all their life. 3
John 1-2, Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper.
Nobody knows for sure who John is writing to here. But listen,
whoever it is, he loves them. See that, beloved. Beloved, I
wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health,
even as thy soul prospereth. For I rejoiced greatly when the
brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you. The truth hadn't just been told
you, that's important. But the end result of the truth
being told you, if God is gracious and has mercy, is the truth's
in you now. He said that that blessed my heart when they told
me about even as thou walkest in the truth The truth is in
you and you walk in the truth and listen to this statement
verse 4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children Walk in Christ That's what it
says Walk in Christ And notice that Barzillia didn't
say to Chemom, now you go with David. He said to David, let
him go with you. May it please you to take him
with you. Now I'm sure Barzillia taught
Chemom, at least by example, I guarantee he taught him by
example to honor God's king, that David was worthy to be bowed
to and honored and revered as God's king. He was worthy of
allegiance. If you can ever do anything for
him, you do it. He taught him that by example, but Shemom being
with David is not up to Barzillai. It ain't up to me, is it? Not
up to you. And I'll tell you this, it's
not up to them either. It's not up to Shemom. It's up to David. It's up to David. And so he said to David, let
him go with you. Let him go with you. And it wasn't
assumed. It wasn't assumed that he would just do it. Look at
verses 38 and 39. And these, listen, this speaks for itself.
We'll read the part that, the point that we're talking about
right now, but look at the rest of it. Verses 38 and 39, they
speak for themselves. And the king answered. It wasn't
just assumed. It wasn't just a given. David
said, he'll come with me. Roselia asked for it. You know,
the Lord has taught us if we ask, we'll receive. Seek and you'll find. He said,
you knock and I'll open. It's not about him knocking and
trying to do something. that we won't let him do. He
said, you knock and I'll open unto you. And the king said, your mom shall
go over with me. And I will do to him that which
shall seem good unto you. You know what seems good to us?
What seems good to him. That's what Barzillia said. Do
what seems good to you. And whatsoever thou shalt require
of me, that will I do for you. If there's anything else you
want or need, you let me know. As he said that to us, let me
know. Pray without ceasing. Let your
supplications with joy and thanksgiving before the throne of God, let
your requests be made known unto God. No good thing will he withhold
from them that love him. And all the people went over
Jordan, and when the king was come over, the king kissed Marcilia. and blessed him. And he returned
to his own place. Whatever I need and most of what
I want is mine. Paul said, all things are yours.
It's all yours. And the only reason everything
I want is not mine is because I want some stupid stuff sometimes.
How about you? But I'll tell you why. Well, that's true. Because the
king loves me. He's kissed me. And he's blessed
me. And since he has, since he does,
I shall not want May God make us great for his glory. Let's pray.
