Isaiah Series 2023

The sermon titled Who is in Darkness? Stay Upon God, preached by Clay Curtis, primarily addresses the doctrine of Christ as the prophet and shepherd of His people in times of spiritual darkness. Curtis argues that believers may find themselves in seasons of darkness due to disobedience and a lack of trust in God's promises, as depicted in Isaiah 50. He supports his claims with Scripture, particularly Isaiah 50:4-10 and Psalm 107, highlighting how God's Word serves as the source of renewal and sustenance for weary souls. The sermon emphasizes the practical significance of trusting in the Lord and relying on the preaching of the gospel as the means by which Christ ministers to His people, assuring them of His sovereignty, faithfulness, and intimate involvement in their struggles.

Key Quotes

“Our Lord Jesus Christ was touched with every one of those. That’s why He knows how to speak a word in season to him that's weary, because He's touched with the feelings of all our weariness.”

“Trust in the name of the Lord and stay upon your God... The Lord's always ruling the darkness. He's ruling everything.”

“When Christ sends a man preaching the gospel... His people trust in the name of the Lord and stay upon our God.”

“The only way you're going to be saved is to trust in the name of the Lord and stay upon your God.”

What does the Bible say about being in darkness?

The Bible explains that darkness can be a result of sin and disobedience, but God uses it to draw His people back to Him.

In Isaiah 50, we learn that the elect can experience seasons of darkness due to their own sins and disobedience to God's word. This darkness serves a purpose: it reminds believers of their need to cry out to the Lord for help. The Lord allows such experiences to foster a deepened reliance on Him, urging His people to trust in His name and stay upon Him. Notably, it's emphasized that God is sovereign over these experiences and uses them to renew our hearts and minds, guiding us to remain obedient and faithful despite trials.

Isaiah 50:1, Isaiah 50:10, Psalm 107:9-13

Why is obedience to God's word important for Christians?

Obedience is crucial as it reflects our trust in God and aligns us with His will, ensuring we remain in His light.

Obedience to God's word is a central theme in Isaiah 50, where the prophet calls on God's people to obey the voice of the Lord to avoid spiritual darkness. When believers turn away from God's commandments, they can find themselves lost in darkness, lacking the light of His presence. Therefore, obedience is not merely a requirement but an expression of faith in God's trustworthiness and sovereign care. When we obey, we are reminded of our identity and security in Christ, who is both the source of our justification and the shepherd of our souls.

Isaiah 50:10, Hebrews 13:17, Psalm 107:13

How do we know Jesus is our shepherd?

Jesus is identified as our shepherd through His selfless sacrifice and continual care for our souls.

The concept of Jesus as our shepherd is rooted in His intimate involvement in the lives of His people. Isaiah 50 portrays Him as the one who speaks to us in our weariness and guides us through dark seasons. As our high priest, He understands our struggles uniquely because He was tempted in every way yet without sin. His role as shepherd is further confirmed by His sacrificial love and the assurance that He will never lose even one of His sheep. Believers can be confident that He is actively leading, guiding, and keeping them, affirming His profound commitment to their spiritual well-being.

Isaiah 50:4, Hebrews 4:15, John 10:28-29

Why should we trust in the name of the Lord?

Trusting in the Lord’s name ensures our reliance on His sovereignty and faithfulness, especially in times of trouble.

Trusting in the name of the Lord is encouraged throughout Scripture, especially in Isaiah 50. This trust rests on the understanding that God's character is steadfast and faithful. He is sovereign over all circumstances, and in our moments of darkness, it is essential to rely on His promises and power. The name of the Lord encapsulates His nature—His sovereignty, mercy, and readiness to help. When we trust in His name, we affirm our faith in His ability to save and sustain us through life's difficulties, allowing His Word to guide us in obedience and hope.

Isaiah 50. This is the last sermon I'll
preach for 2024, and my heart keeps coming back here to Isaiah
50. There's many brethren that are
full of joy, looking forward to 2025, but there are some that are in
a dark, dark season. And whichever the case with you,
believer, I want you to, and I pray God make you hearken to
the voice of our Lord Jesus. Hearken to the voice of the prophet,
Christ Jesus. Our risen Savior is the bishop
and shepherd of our souls. He's the bishop, the preacher.
the shepherd, the pastor, is what the word means. He's the
bishop and shepherd of our souls. And the way he ministers to us
is through this means right here. It's through the preaching of
the gospel. And here's what he says in verse
four. He says, the Lord God has given
me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak
a word in season to him that is weary. Does anybody here that
that describes? Anybody that hears my voice right
now that that describes? Are you weary of Satan's assaults? Are you weary from slander and
from backbiting? Are you weary of the death from
the death of a loved one? Are you weary of persecution
from your own family? Are you weary from betrayal by
friend? Are you weary as you see death
approach? Are you weary of sin? Here's the good news. Our Lord
Jesus Christ was touched with every one of those. He was touched
with every one of those. That's why He knows how to speak
a word in season to him that's weary, because He's touched with
the feelings of all our weariness. Our Savior experienced every
one of those things. We have not a high priest which
cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, but was in
all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Now, the
message of this chapter, the message of this chapter, is that
our risen Savior is the bishop and shepherd of our souls. who
we are to hear and to obey. And the reason is, is because
he's the one who justified all his people from our sins. And
Brother Ben just read, he put away our sins by his one sacrifice. And the message of this chapter that Christ is the prophet. That's the message of this chapter.
He's the one who ministers to us through this one means, the
preaching of the gospel. He sends an earthen vessel preaching
his word. That's what he does. The vessel
he uses is only a sinner saved by grace. He's just one sinner
preaching to other sinners. but it's Christ who rules the
heart of his preacher, it's Christ who rules the heart of his people,
and he teaches us both, and we know the power is of God, not
of us. This is what he said, the spirit
of the Lord's upon me, because he anointed me to preach the
gospel to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted. to preach deliverance
to the captives, a recovering of sight to the blind, to set
at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year
of the Lord. He's the prophet. The message
he preaches is himself and what he accomplished, the justification
of his people, the faithfulness of God. That's what he declared.
Now, he declared in verse 1 that his elect in Israel were in darkness
due to their sins. His elect, sanctified, chosen,
called. They were in darkness because
of their sin. In verse 10, He describes His
people. And this is how He describes
His people. Does this describe you? He said in verse 10, Who
is there among you that feareth the Lord? These ones that were
in darkness in Israel, they feared the Lord. He'd given them a heart
of reverence for God, a heart of awe for God. That's what he's
given to you who he sanctified. They feared the Lord. Verse 10,
that obeyeth the voice of his servant. Christ our prophet had
given his elect among them contrite hearts to obey his voice. He'd given them hearts to obey
the voice of the Holy Spirit. He'd given them hearts to obey
Isaiah, the preacher, he said, preaching the gospel. That's
what the scripture teaches us to do. Obey them that have the
rule over you. and submit yourselves, for they
watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that
they may do it with joy and not with grief, for that's unprofitable
for you. But brethren, sometimes, sometimes
God's saints are in darkness because we do not obey the voice
of his servant. We're in darkness sometimes because
we don't obey the voice of the Holy Spirit. In doing so, we're
not obeying the voice of Christ the prophet. That's why they
were in darkness. He's speaking to his saints here.
And he said, you, verse 10, that walk in darkness and have no
light. Now there are lots of reasons
God's saints go through darkness. There's lots of reasons. It's
not always for the same reason that his elect in Israel were
in darkness at this time. But in this passage, the Lord
is declaring the importance of obeying His voice, by obeying
His word delivered through His earthen vessel, by attending
the preaching of the gospel, and obeying and remembering it's
Christ speaking to you. He's teaching you obedience to
trust in the name of the Lord and stay upon the Lord at all
times, to set your face like a flint and trust Him. That's
the obedience He's talking about. The Lord, because they didn't
obey His voice, the Lord chastened His elect among Israel, sending
them forth into Babylonian captivity. And they were in serious darkness
in Babylonian captivity because they had not obeyed Christ's
word delivered through his servant Isaiah. But it was not Isaiah
they rebelled against. It was Christ Jesus, our prophet. I want you to see this. He declared
that there in verse one. for their sin, but I want you
to see it in Psalm 107. And you get the point. I preached through this chapter
enough, preached through it last week. You get the point here,
brethren, that the whole point of this passage is to show us
the importance of trusting in the name of the Lord, staying
upon the Lord, and it's through Him preaching this gospel to
us. Now look here at Psalm 107. Our
Savior's not going to lose one He's redeemed. I want to say
this before I read this. He's not going to lose one He's
redeemed. He delivered His elect in Israel from this darkness
and He'll deliver you. But He's going to deliver us
by this one means. He's going to deliver us. How
is He delivering them? He sent Isaiah preaching this
word. And that's how he's gonna deliver us. Psalm 107 declares
that God's mercy endures forever. He's never gonna lose one that
he chose. This is true, God's saints, even
after Christ has sanctified us, because we're yet sinners in
our flesh, and we will sometimes not heed his word, we'll sometimes
cease to hear the gospel preached, and we'll become weak, and the
Lord hath chastened, he'll correct, we'll be in darkness. but he's
gonna keep you trusting in the name of the Lord and looking
to him alone. Now look here, he says it right here in Psalm
107 verse nine. He satisfied the longing soul. He filleth the hungry soul with
goodness. But sometimes we get feeling
like we're full and we don't need the gospel and he has to
make you hungry and thirsty. He does this for such a sin in
darkness and in the shadow of death. being bound in affliction
and iron. Why is that the case with them?
Because they rebelled against the words of God and contemned
the counsel of the Most High. Therefore He brought down their
heart with labor. They fell down and there was
none to help. But see, their sin didn't change
who they were in Christ. Their sin didn't change the grace
of God in Christ. And so this is why He put them
in darkness to chasten them. But look at verse 13, then they
cried and to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them out
of their distresses. You see, that's when they were
thirsty and hungry, when they were in darkness. That's why
I put them there, to give them this hunger and thirst again.
Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble. He saved them
out of their distresses. He brought them out of darkness
and the shadow of death and break their bands and sunder. Oh, that
man would praise the Lord for his goodness, for his wonderful
works to the children of men, for he hath broken the gates
of brass and cut the bars of iron and sunder. Now in Isaiah
50, this is the word of the Lord sent to you today. If you're
hearing this, it's because he sent this to you. And this is
Christ the prophet speaking. He says in verse 10, who is among
you that feareth the Lord, that obeyeth the voice of his servant,
that walketh in darkness and hath no light, let him trust
in the name of the Lord and stay upon his God. rather than the
reason for darkness. It's not always this same reason. But this is always so. The Lord's
always ruling the darkness. He's ruling everything. The Lord
only chastens those He loves and makes you know it's Him doing
it. and He does it to keep us hungry and thirsty, hearing His
gospel and obeying Christ. What is that? Trust in the name
of the Lord and stay upon your God. That's what He's going to
keep His people doing. I want to show you what He says
to us here to make us trust in the name of the Lord and stay
upon Him. I want you to hear what He says.
He not only preaches the gospel to us, He uses Himself as the
example. of why we should believe and
the one whom we should believe. But look what he says first.
Trust in the name of the Lord and stay upon your God because
he's sovereign over all. Now this is Christ speaking.
And back in verse 2, he asks the question, is my hand shortened
at all that it cannot redeem? Is my hand shortened that it
can't redeem? What does redeem mean? Anytime
you don't know what a word means, read the next phrase. Or have
I no power to deliver? To redeem is to deliver. He said,
is my hand too short? Do I not have the power to redeem
you, to deliver you? Over and over in Scripture, when
the Lord declares that He's the Savior of His people, when He
declares He is our salvation doing the saving, He declares
He's sovereign over creation. Over and over He declares that.
And right here He says, verse 2, Behold, at my rebuke I drop
the sea. That's Christ speaking now. He's
speaking through this whole chapter. Behold! At my rebuke, I'll dry
up the sea. I'll make the rivers a wilderness.
There are fish naked because there is no water and dive for
thirst. I'll clothe the heavens with
blackness. I'll make sackcloth a covering. I can't listen to the preacher.
I think he's going the wrong direction. If he's Christ's preacher, Christ
dried up the sea. He rebukes the sea, he dries
up the rivers, he makes heaven's darkness. Can he keep his people? Can he teach his pastor? Did
he teach them? You know, he chastened them using
a whole nation. He used a whole nation to correct
his children, his elect in Israel. A whole nation he used. Why did
men not obey Christ when he walked this earth? Why didn't they obey
him when he walked this earth? Without faith, they only saw
a man like themselves. That's why they rejected Isaiah.
They only saw a man like themselves. That's why he saves this way.
That's why he uses an earthen vessel, a broken dry pot, a sinner,
and fills him with his treasure and uses him to preach. That's
why he does it, because all men see he's just a sinner. They rejected Isaiah because
they only heard a man just like them. Without faith, they didn't
know it was Christ speaking to them. Jesus of Nazareth, Jesus of Nazareth,
that one that was just a man, that they saw just as a man,
he is sovereign God. It was the pre-incarnate Lord
Jesus Christ that made the whole world a sea in Noah's day. He's
the one that sent the rain and broke up the earth and the rain
came up from the earth. That's what he's declaring here.
He's the one who turned the Nile River into blood in Egypt. That's
him. He's the one that made the heavens
darkness for three days in Egypt. Darkness that may be felt. And
he's the one that gave light to the children of Israel at
the same time. He's the one who dried up the Red Sea and let
Israel cross on dry ground and then drowned Pharaoh and his
army in the sea. He's the one who brought them
to the Jordan and dried up the Jordan River and delivered them
across on dry land. This is Christ speaking. He said,
look at what I do. Is my hand short that it can't
deliver you? We have every reason to obey
His forestone. We have every reason to trust
in the name of the Lord and stay upon our God. He's sovereign
God. The Lord Jesus. You go home and
you read Isaiah 40. And you take note that that same
one who it says is the shepherd who shall feed his flock, that'll
gather the lambs with his arm and carry them in his bosom and
gently lead those that are young, is he who has measured the waters
in the hollow of his hand and made it out to heavens with a
span. He's the one that sits on the circle of the earth and
the heavens there of his grasshoppers. The same one that is our Savior. He said, have you not heard,
I'm the everlasting God, I'm the creator of the ends of the
earth, I faint not, either am I weary, That's what he said,
he said, there's no searching of my understanding. He said,
I give power to the faint and to them that have no strength,
I increase strength. He's God, brethren, that's who
he is. Brethren, when Christ sends a
man preaching the gospel. You know why His people believe
the gospel? You know why His people trust
in the name of the Lord and stay upon our God? Because this same
sovereign Savior is the prophet who makes that word effectual
in your heart and keeps you believing Him, keeps you trusting. And
when we turn to the left or the right, it's the same sovereign
Savior that chastens us and brings on the darkness to create that
hunger and thirst in us to make us cry out to Him to save us.
That's His power, that's what He's able to do. He's given me
the tongue of the Lamb that I should know how to speak a word in season
to Him that's weary. That's Him, brethren. And this
same, just like God opened His ear, Christ continually opens
the ear of His people. He keeps opening our ear and
renewing us through this gospel. Verse 4, He wakeneth morning
by morning, He waketh my ears to learn. This is speaking of
renewing, the renewing. This is the mind of Christ. When
He called you, He gave you the mind of Christ. And the scripture
says, be renewed in the spirit of your mind. He keeps renewing
you. That's what he keeps doing. You
think about this, brethren. What, I think there's something
like 2,200 sermons posted on Sermon Audio. And that doesn't
count, you know, traveling. That's just our site. That doesn't
count traveling. That don't count the seven years I preached before
that. There is no other book that you
can study for over 20 years and preach that many messages out
of, and they're as new in your heart as the first one you ever
preached. This is the only book that's
that way. Why is it that way? The Spirit of the Lord keeps
renewing us. He keeps renewing us. He keeps
this gospel fresh in our heart. Jeremiah said, this I recall
to my mind, and therefore I have hope. It's of the Lord's mercies
that we're not consumed, because His compassions fail not. They
are new every morning. He keeps them new every morning. Great is His faithfulness. That's
what He's doing for His people. And it's all by Christ's power
alone, brethren. Oh, we need to hear His voice.
We need to constantly hear His voice because this is how He's
doing this. He's renewing us through this
Word. This is what makes us. It's Him
alone, His power that makes us so we don't rebel and turn back.
If He doesn't keep us centered, that's what He'll do. He'll rebel
and turn back. But when darkness comes, He makes
you willing to submit to Him. and to trust Him by speaking
this word. Look here, verse 5, The Lord
God hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither
turned away back. I gave my back to the spiders,
and did my cheeks to them that plucked off their hair. I had
not my face from shame and spitting. And you see brethren, it's only
by the power of His Word, it's only by Him. You see, the Father
opened His ear and He willingly, faithfully went into the darkness
and didn't turn back. He didn't rebel. He willingly
did that. He did it for God, His Father, and He did it for
His people. And it's by His power that when you're in the darkness,
He's going to make you set your face like a flint. He's not going
to let you turn back. Why? He's going to open your
ear. He's going to renew this Word
in your heart morning by morning. And you're going to submit and
trust in the name of the Lord and stay upon your God even in
the darkness. We're talking about when you
don't feel anything. That's true faith. We're talking
about when all you have is this Word. That's true faith, trusting
the Word of God. It's not, oh, I feel this, I
feel, it's not what you feel. It's the word of God that we
trust. In the dark seasons, you might
not feel like coming to hear this gospel. Come to hear the
gospel. I've said this over and over.
Come hear it anyway. There's a lot of times, brethren,
I don't feel like preaching. There's a lot of times I don't
feel like studying. Do it anyway. and in just a little while, you
feel your heart's renewed and you actually have some feeling
and you actually see him and you rejoice in him. He filleth
all in all. Now secondly, so that's the first
thing. He's sovereign God. That's what I would say. That's
what he's gonna do. Secondly, when he speaks through this gospel
and makes you behold him, when he renews you in faith, he renews
you to have faith like his faith. That's what he's saying here.
Your faith is going to be like his faith. Peter called it like
precious faith. It's like his precious faith. Not anywhere near perfect like
his, but it's faith like he had. He's going to make you stay up
on him like he stayed up on God his father. Listen, Peter said, for as much
then as Christ has suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves
likewise with the same mind. He's given you the mind of Christ.
He said, be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and He's going
to arm you with the same mind of Christ. That's what He's going
to do. That's what He's telling us here. When Christ faced the
cross, this was His mind. Verse 7, He said, The Lord God
will help me. That's the mind he's gonna strengthen
you with. He's gonna bring to your mind
and renew you in your mind when you're in that darkness and that
heaviness, and it's the salts of Satan, and it's the loss of
loved ones, and it's betrayal of friends, and it's slander,
and it's backbiting, and it's all these different things. He's
gonna bring this into your mind and renew you in your mind to
say, the Lord God will help me. Therefore shall I not be confounded."
I'm not going to be ashamed. Therefore, have I set my face
like a flint, I know I shall not be ashamed. The Lord Jesus
had perfect faith. We're saved by his faith. He
had perfect faith and he believed Listen to this now. You see there
what he says? He says, the Lord God will help
me. I've said to you over and over,
when you read Lord God, it's always going to be in conjunction
with the covenant and with faith in the word of God. And that's
exactly what Christ is saying right here. The covenant keeping
God, I have his word, and I believe his word, and he will help me. That's what he gave Christ his
word, he would help him. And Christ said, he will help
me. He will help me. Now listen, when he went into
the Garden of Gethsemane, this is what we're talking about now.
He said, now is my soul troubled. Now I know you and me get these
feelings of heaviness and it's real affliction of you and me,
but have you ever been so troubled in your soul that you sweat blood? That's trouble. You reckon at that point he didn't
have good feelings? He's saying he didn't have any
good feelings. What did he have? He had the
word of the covenant-keeping God. And he's saying to you and
me that he's going to renew you in faith and open your ear to
hear and he's going to give you faith to trust his word like
he trusted the Father. Now you're not going to trust
him like he trusted the Father, you're not going to have that
perfect faith, but if your faith is even as a grain of mustard
seed, he said, He's going to do the saving. It's His faith
by which we're saved. Knowing that a man is not justified
by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ,
even we believe in Jesus Christ. We're saved by the faith of Jesus
Christ. Paul said, I want to be found
in Him having His righteousness, not having a righteousness which
is of mine, of the law, but that which is through the faith of
Christ. Did the Lord God help our Savior? Did He let Christ
be confounded? No way. And our Savior will not
let you be confounded. He will help His people. He will
intercede for you. This is His intercession for
us at the right hand of God. Listen to this from Psalm 69
6. He said, Let not them that wait on thee, O Lord God of hosts,
be ashamed for my sake. Let not those that seek thee
be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel. That's what he's praying
to the Father. That's what he's interceding
to the Father for his people. Don't let them be confounded.
Don't let them be ashamed for my sake. He promised us, Thou
shalt know that I am the Lord, for they shall not be ashamed
that wait for me. That was just in the chapter
before. That was his promise. Israel shall be saved in the
Lord with an everlasting salvation. You shall not be ashamed nor
confounded, world without end. He said in Hebrews 13, Hebrews
13, He said, Let your conduct be without covetousness. Be content
with such things as you have. Even the darkness, even the darkness. Why? For he has said, I will
never leave thee nor forsake thee, so that we may boldly say,
the Lord is my helper. He said, that's how he saved
us. His perfect faith said, the Lord
God will help me. And he says to you, I'm your
helper. I'll never leave you. And therefore
we say, I will not fear what man shall do to me. I will trust
the Lord. This is what he's going to give
you. He's going to give you an ear. He's going to open your
ear and he's going to renew this faith. He's going to give you
the mind of Christ and arm you with his mind. The Lord God will
help me. Christ will help me. That was
his mind when he suffered the cross. This was his mind when
he suffered the cross. Here's the mind he's going to
give and renew in us. Verse 8, He is near that justifieth
me. Who will contend with me? Let
us stand together. Who's my adversary? Let him come
near to me. Behold the Lord. God will help
me. Who is he that shall condemn
me? Lo, they all shall wax old as a garment. The moth shall
eat them up. Have you ever had sin imputed
to you? Have you ever had sin imputed
to you? Have you ever been charged with something? Have you ever
had accusations hurled at you? Listen, as the substitute of
His people, the Lord Jesus had all the sins of all His people
laid to His charge at one time. Think about that. He was numbered with the transgressors and he bared the sin of meaning
and made intercession for the transgressors. Men and devils
accused him. They were hurling accusations
at him. Worst of all, God, as the judge,
numbered him with the transgressors. Darkness. You talk about darkness. Darkness. For three hours. And he did no sin. Neither was
guile in his mouth. He's perfect. But you know, that
just makes accusations hurt worse. But He owned our sin to be His
own. He owned our sin to be His own
and God wouldn't play and pretend when He charged Him. He had made
Him sin for us and He was bearing our sin. But you know what He
did in that darkness? When all these accusations were
being hurled at Him, you know what He did? He opened not His
mouth. He committed His cause to the
very Judge that has sent the darkness. Are you in darkness? Anybody
here in darkness? Christ bore that darkness of
eternity. That's what it was, the darkness
of eternity. He bore that for three hours.
And because He bore that, you're never going to bear that darkness.
You'll never bear that darkness. But here's what He said when
He was in that time. He said, He's near that justified
me. Who will contend with me? The
Lord God will help me. Who shall condemn me? Now when
our Savior bore that in perfect faith, see that's the amazing
thing of the cross to me. That's His perfect faith. He
is near the justified man. There He is bearing all the sin
of His people, and He needs the Father to justify Him, because
He's bearing all the sin of His people. But that's His perfect faith,
Him saying, as He's bearing the sin and as He's bearing the guilt
of His people and is being condemned by God, at the same time, He
trusts God with perfect faith, saying, He's near that justifies
me. And he accomplished by that work,
that is the perfect, righteous, faithful obedience to the law.
And he fulfilled it and put away all the sin of his people. He
accomplished the redemption of all his people. He put away the
sin of all his people. God, therefore, justified him. He justified us in Him, all who
is elect. He raised Him to His right hand
and He justified us and raised us to His right hand in Him. Scripture says He was delivered
for our offenses and was raised again for our justification. Then why am I in this darkness?
Why am I in darkness? You ever ask yourself that? If
He did this for me and I'll never bear the darkness of eternity
again, why am I in this darkness? If He's my light and He said
I'll always have the light, why am I in this darkness? Why do I experience this heaviness? I tried to show you the reason
that Israel was experiencing it is they had turned from hearing
the voice of Isaiah and they were not trusting in the name
of the Lord and staying upon Christ alone. That's why. He wasn't forsaking them. He
wasn't going to leave them. He wasn't going to let them perish. He was doing it to make them
hungry and thirsty for him. So they would cry to him and
he'd fill them. Brethren, Christ is going to
make you willing to assemble under His gospel. This is what
He's going to do. This is why I don't like to see brethren
stop coming to hear the gospel, whether it's here or any other
place. But this is my hope. Christ is going to make His people
willing to assemble. He's gonna make His people willing
to assemble under His gospel and hear His word and obey His
voice. He's gonna make us heed the word
delivered by His messenger and never forsake His gospel. That's
what He's gonna do. Now, are you listening? You know,
we hear the word like this when we're in the light and everything's
good, we've heard it, and we say, that's right, that's what,
when you're in the darkness, stay on the Lord, trust in the
name of the Lord and stay on God. It's a whole different ballgame
when the darkness comes. It's a whole different ballgame
when the darkness comes. That's when you find out the
only way you're going to obey Him at any time is by Him. By Him opening your ear and renewing
you in the heart to trust Him. But that's what He's going to
do. Is this the Christ you trust? Is He all your salvation? Do
you believe the witness God's given of His Son? If you do,
let me tell you something, if you're in the darkness right
now, but you believe Him, you trust Him by His grace, you believe
He is the Savior, listen to this, then you have fellowship in His
sufferings. The reason you're in the darkness
is to give you fellowship with His suffering, to give you a
little taste of what He suffered. But here's what that means. When
you have fellowship with His suffering, it means when He suffered,
you suffered in Him. It means when He obeyed, you
obeyed in Him. It means when He died under the
justice of God, you died under the justice of God in Him. It
means when He was buried in the grave, your old man of sin was
buried in the grave with Him. And it means when He came out
and sat down at God's right hand, you came out and sat down at
God's right hand in Him. That's what it means, brethren.
It means just like God only sees righteousness and holiness in
His Son now, His Son has put away sin and God looks to His
Son and only sees righteousness and holiness in His Son, God
looks to you who believe and He only sees righteousness and
holiness by His Son. That's what He beholds. Christ
is complete and you are complete in Him. That's what it is to
have fellowship in His suffering and to be a partaker of His resurrection.
By Him, all that believe are justified from all things. Brethren, God our Father. And
His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, is faithful. God's elect shall
never suffer that darkness of justice. That darkness that we're
going to suffer is simply to turn us to Him, to heed His gospel,
to obey His servant. And the word delivered to us
is, trust in the name of the Lord and stay upon your God.
That's the word. If I could just, people, what's
the will of God for me? What's the gospel? What's this?
If I could just tell you this is it. Trust in the name of the
Lord and stay upon God. That's the only way you're gonna
be saved. That's the only way I'm gonna be saved. And he has
to renew you to know he is near that justifies me. He is near
to justify me. He has to renew us to know the
Lord God will help me. And He has to renew us to know,
when you're in that darkness, He says, who is among you that
feareth the Lord? Has He put this all in your heart
for Him? He says, who is it that obeys
His voice? Well, you're saying, preacher, they didn't obey. Oh,
they obeyed His voice. They trusted Christ, but they
just temporarily wasn't obeying His voice. But He's going to
keep you obeying His voice. And yet you're in darkness. You
don't have any light. What's the answer? Trust in the
name of the Lord and stay upon your God. Do you hear Him? Do you hear Him? I tell you,
if you're in darkness, if you're in darkness, He sent it. And
if you're in darkness, He sent this message for you. He will
renew you to hear it and he'll arm you with his mind and that's
what he'll make you do. He'll make you trust. He's near
to justify me. My enemies will be eaten up like
a moth eats a dish rag. He's going to save me. He's going
to help me. He has and He shall. I pray you bless that. I pray
if you're in darkness, I pray you bless that to your heart
and make you trust Him. Make you have to have this gospel
and stay upon Him. Stay upon Him through the preaching
of His word. Amen.
