In the sermon titled "TV: The Lamb Slain," Gabe Stalnaker addresses the centrality of Christ in Scripture, specifically focusing on the theological concept of Jesus as the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, as referenced in Revelation 13:8. Stalnaker argues that the entire Bible revolves around this concept, emphasizing that it is not about humanity or their actions, but about God's provision through the sacrificial Lamb. He supports his argument by tracing the typology of the Lamb through various Scriptures: the first mention in Genesis 4, the prophecy in Genesis 22, the application in Exodus 12, the personification in Isaiah 53, the identification in John 1, and the glorification in Revelation 5. Stalnaker asserts that this understanding of the Lamb establishes the foundation for salvation, highlighting that human works cannot appease God's wrath; only the sacrifice of the Lamb suffices for redemption. This insight holds practical significance in understanding the grace of God and the assurance of salvation rooted in Christ alone.

Key Quotes

“If you want to cut through all of the misunderstanding and all of the error...the point of the whole book is, it's the lamb slain.”

“A lamb slain is the only thing God will accept...our hands need to stay out of it.”

“God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering...the Lamb of God was promised and it was a promise guaranteed to be fulfilled.”

“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing.”

What does the Bible say about the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world?

The Bible reveals that the Lamb was chosen for redemption before the world began, highlighting God's sovereign plan for salvation.

In Revelation 13:8, it is stated that the Lamb was slain from the foundation of the world, indicating that God's plan for redemption through Christ was established before creation itself. This emphasizes the importance of the Lamb in God's sovereign grace, showing that salvation is part of God's eternal purpose and not a reaction to sin. The entire narrative of Scripture points to this central theme of the Lamb of God, who is ultimately revealed as Jesus Christ, the one who would take away the sin of the world.

Revelation 13:8

How do we know the doctrine of redemption through Christ is true?

The truth of redemption is rooted in the fulfillment of biblical prophecy and the consistent testimony throughout Scripture.

The doctrine of redemption through Christ is affirmed by the consistent testimony of Scripture, which portrays the Lamb as typified, prophesied, applied, and ultimately personified in Jesus. For instance, in Genesis 22, Abraham prophesies that God will provide a lamb, pointing to Christ. In Exodus 12, the Passover lamb prefigures the sacrifice of Christ, showing how God’s people were saved through the blood applied to their doorposts. The culmination of this doctrine is found in Isaiah 53, where the suffering servant is described as bearing the sins of many. These prophetic fulfillments validate the truth of redemption through Christ, demonstrating it as a central tenet of the Christian faith.

Genesis 22, Exodus 12, Isaiah 53

Why is the concept of the Lamb important for Christians?

The Lamb is essential for Christians because He embodies God's provision for atonement and reconciliation with Him.

For Christians, the concept of the Lamb is foundational to understanding God’s salvation plan. The Lamb of God symbolizes the ultimate sacrifice necessary for atonement, as expressed in Isaiah 53, where the suffering servant is identified as bearing our iniquities. Moreover, in John 1:29, John the Baptist identifies Jesus as the Lamb of God, further illustrating that through His death, believers are reconciled to God. This underscores the centrality of Christ’s sacrificial death, reinforcing that salvation is through grace, not works. Thus, recognizing the importance of the Lamb strengthens the believer's faith and assurance in their salvation.

Kingsport Sovereign Grace Church, located at 2709 Rock Springs Road in Kingsport, Tennessee, would like to invite you to listen to a message of Sovereign Grace by their pastor, Gabe Stoniker. For information and service times, visit www.ksgc.church. And now, Gabe Stoniker.

If you would like to follow along with me, I will begin this message in Revelation chapter 13. Revelation 13, and I want to read verse eight, but before I do, I want to point out that the beginning of this verse is speaking of the adversary. It's speaking of the devil. And in Revelation 13, verse eight, it says, all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him whose names are not written in the book of the lamb slain from the foundation of the world. all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, the adversary, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Now, we are not speaking today on the adversary. We are speaking on the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. That's our subject matter, the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. This entire book, the entire Bible, the entire Bible is concerning the lamb slain. The whole book, the whole book. If you want to get to the root of the matter, if you want to cut through the confusion, if the Bible is confusing to you, and it is to many people, And if this is something that is confusing and hard to understand, and if you want to cut through the confusion, if you want to cut through all of the misunderstanding and all of the error and all of the debate, everybody loves to debate things, well, if you want to get to the heart of the whole book, If we want to know what the subject matter, the message, the point of the whole book is, it's the lamb slain. That's it. The lamb slain.

This book, the Bible, is not about me and it's not about you. The Bible is not about me. It's not about you. The Bible is not about doctrines. It's not about religious positions. This book is concerning the lamb slain. The lamb slain. This entire book cover to cover is the revelation of Jesus Christ. the lamb slain. God's provided lamb, our salvation. That's what the whole book is about. God's provided lamb, which is our salvation. God's provided lamb was the substitute sacrifice for all of God's chosen people. not for all of the people on this earth, but for every soul that the Father elected to save in the blood of His Lamb. Our Lord declared the Lamb, He declared redemption through the Lamb, cover to cover in this book.

And I want us to take notice of that for just a moment throughout the scripture. I want us to see and prove this throughout the scripture. Years ago, a man pointed out six scriptures that declare and magnify the Lamb of God. And I want to show you those six scriptures, and I want to give you the definition or the description that was given for each one of them. He, he, this man pointed out there, they were already in the Bible and he just pointed out six of them and he gave a little description that goes with each one of them. And I want to deliver that to you now. And I pray the Lord will make this to be clearly understood And I pray he will make this to be a blessing to both of us.

All right. The first one, here's the description that goes with it. The lamb typified. The lamb typified. And what that means is set forth in type. Set forth in picture. The lamb pictured. The lamb illustrated. the Lamb typified, all right? If you have your Bible there, go with me to Genesis chapter four. We're in Revelation, and we're gonna turn all the way back to Genesis. Genesis chapter four, verse one. It says, And Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the Lord. Their first son was Cain.

Verse two, and she again bear his brother Abel, and Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a teller of the ground. He had a garden, he grew vegetables. Verse three, and in the process of time, it came to pass that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the Lord. He brought his best vegetables, fruits and vegetables.

Verse four says, and Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock. He brought lamb and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering, but unto Cain and to his offering, he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell."

The picture, the type, the illustration of what God would accept was set forth. It was made known right there. right there. Our Lord declared in this, the only thing that I will accept as a sacrifice for sin is a lamb slain. That's it. Our Lord will only accept one thing. A lamb slain.

Cain brought of the fruit of the ground. I'm sure he had a very sincere heart in doing so. I'm sure he worked very hard. Everything he had tilled and planted and watered and picked and he selected the best ones. I believe he brought the best. And he was very happy and thrilled to present that to the Lord. But it was not accepted. And that's going to be the case for us. If we try to bring any good works to the Lord very sincerely, very happily, if we try to bring anything to him except for a lamb slain, it will not be accepted. It will not be accepted.

When it comes to our redemption for sin, when it comes to our forgiveness for our sin, when it comes to our appeasing God for our sin, the works of our hands must stay out of it. Our hands need to stay out of it. Our flesh must go. It has to go. Our Lord set forth, it is by the blood of a lamb alone. It's by the blood of a lamb alone.

So right here, this is what we have. We have the lamb typified, okay? Now turn with me over to Genesis 22. Genesis 22, here we have the lamb prophesied. We had the lamb in type, our Lord showed, this is what I will accept, this is what I will not accept. Now we have the Lamb prophesied, and what that means is foretold, telling beforehand. It's a promise guaranteed to be fulfilled. A prophecy is something that must come to pass, okay?

So Genesis 22. Verse 1 says, It came to pass, after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham, and he said, Behold, here I am. And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah, and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains, which I will tell thee of. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and claimed the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up and went up to the place of which God had told him.

Then on the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place afar off. And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass, and I and the lad will go yonder and worship. and come again to you.' And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it upon Isaac his son, and he took the fire in his hand and a knife, and they went both of them together. And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father and said, My father, and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering. God will provide the lamb.

Isaac said, I see the wood, I see the fire, but where's the lamb? And Abraham said, God will provide the lamb. And Abraham said, God will provide himself to be the lamb. The lamb of God prophesied. God will provide. That's what verse eight says. Abraham said, my son, God will provide himself a lamb. He'll take care of it. He will provide himself his own lamb. But he was saying he will provide himself a lamb to be the lamb. So the Lamb of God was promised and it was a promise guaranteed to be fulfilled.

THE LAMB PROPHESIED. THE LAMB PROPHESIED. RIGHT HERE IN VERSE 8, ABRAHAM SAID, MY SON, GOD WILL PROVIDE HIMSELF A LAMB FOR A BURNT OFFERING. SO THEY WENT BOTH OF THEM TOGETHER AND THEY CAME TO THE PLACE WHICH GOD HAD TOLD HIM OF. AND ABRAHAM BUILT AN ALTAR THERE AND LAID THE WOOD IN ORDER AND BOUND ISAAC HIS SON AND LAID HIM ON THE ALTAR UPON THE WOOD. AND ABRAHAM STRETCHED FORTH HIS HAND AND TOOK THE KNIFE TO SLAY HIS SON.

And the angel of the Lord called unto him out of heaven and said, Abraham, Abraham. And he said, here am I. And he said, lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him, for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me. And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-Jireh. As it is said to this day in the Mount of the Lord, it shall be seen. Jehovah-Jireh. That means the Lord will provide. That's what it means. The Lord will provide.

From the beginning, The lamb was typified and prophesied. Now, if you'll turn with me to Exodus chapter 12, Exodus 12, right here, we have the lamb applied, okay? Typified, prophesied, here is the lamb applied.

Exodus 12, verse one, And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, This month shall be unto you the beginning of months. It shall be the first month of the year to you. Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house. And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls. Every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb. Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You shall take it out from the sheep or from the goats. And you shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month. And the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

And they shall take of the blood and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses wherein they shall eat it. That's what they are to do with this blood. Apply it to the doorpost, the side doorpost and the upper doorpost of the houses where they're gonna eat it.

Now look at verse 12. For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast, and against all the gods of Egypt, I will execute judgment, I am the Lord. And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses wherein you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you. And the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you when I smite the land of Egypt.

The Lord God said, when I see that blood, When I see it applied to you, when I see that blood applied on you, on your house, I will know that death has already come to your house. When I see that blood, he said, death is coming through. Death must come to every house. And when I see that blood, I will see death has already come here. Death has already been here. And he said, I'm going to pass over you.

All have sinned and come short of the glory of God. No one is exempt. Every household must experience death. But when I see the blood of the lamb, I'll know judgment has already come. Judgment has already been served. and I'll be satisfied and I'll pass over you. The blood applied. That will be your salvation. That will be your deliverance. That is salvation. That is the sparing of wrath, the blood applied.

All right, now go with me to Isaiah 53. Isaiah 53. We have the lamb typified, the lamb prophesied, the lamb applied, and here in Isaiah 53, we have the lamb personified. And what that means is it was made known, this is not an animal, this is a person. That's what was revealed right here. God said, you gotta have a lamb, take a lamb. The Lord will provide a lamb. And right here in Isaiah 53, it was announced, it was declared, it was made known. It's not an animal that God has provided. It's a person. It's a man. This lamb, the lamb of God is a man.

Isaiah 53 verse one, it says, who hath believed our report, and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed. For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of dry ground. He hath no form nor comeliness, and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, and we hid, as it were, our faces from Him. He was despised and we esteemed Him not. Surely He hath borne our griefs and carried our sorrows, yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions. He was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed.

All we, like sheep, have gone astray. We have turned every one to his own way. And the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth. He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. He was taken from prison and from judgment, and who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living. For the transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave with the wicked and with the rich in his death, because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit found in his mouth.

Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him." He hath put him to grief, when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin. He shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hands. He shall see of the travail of his soul and shall be satisfied. By his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many, for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoiled with the strong, because he hath poured out his soul unto death, and he was numbered with the transgressors, and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors."

This lamb is a man. This lamb is a man. This lamb that was typified with Abel and prophesied with Abraham and applied to all the houses of God's people. This lamb is a man.

A man is coming. A man is coming. Who is he? Okay, a man is coming. Well, who is he? Where is he? When will he be? When will he come? How will we know?

Turn over to John chapter one. In John chapter one, God's lamb being typified, prophesied, applied, personified, Right here, He was identified. He was identified.

John 1 verse 14, it says, The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John bare witness of Him and cried, saying, This was He of whom I spake. He that cometh after me is preferred before me, for he was before me. And of his fullness have all we received, and grace for grace. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

No man hath seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, hath declared Him. And this is the record of John, which the Jews sent, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou? And he confessed and denied not, but confessed, I am not the Christ. And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

Then said they unto him, Who art thou, that we may give an answer to them that sin us? What sayest thou of thyself? He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness. Make straight the way of the Lord. As said the prophet Isaiah.

And they which were sent were of the Pharisees. And they asked him and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet? John answered them, saying, I baptize with water, but there standeth one among you whom you know not. He it is who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoes latch it I'm not worthy to unloose.

These things were done in Bethabara, beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him and said, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. This is he of whom I speak. After me cometh a man which is preferred before me. And I knew him not, but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

In John Behr records saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode on him. And I knew him not, but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and remaining on him, the same as he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. And I saw and bear record that this is the Son of God."

He is the Lamb of God. Every word in God's book was talking about Him. That's what John said. He's the one. He is the one who was promised to come and redeem his people from their sins.

So we have the Lamb typified, prophesied, applied, personified, identified, and here's our last one. Revelation 5, this is the Lamb of God glorified. Glorified, magnified, glorified for who He is and what He's done for His people.

Verse 1, Revelation 5 verse 1, And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon.

And one of the elders said unto me, Weep not. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. And I beheld, and lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a lamb, a lamb as if it had been slain, as if it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God.

And down in verse 9 it says they sung a new song to Him saying, Verse 12, saying, with a loud voice, worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing, all of it to the Lamb. May all glory be to the Lamb. Amen.
