In the sermon titled "One Man," Gabe Stalnaker focuses on the profound revelation of Jesus Christ as seen in Daniel 10:1-6. He emphasizes the significance of the physical description of a "certain man" encountered by Daniel, interpreting this figure as none other than Jesus Christ in His glorified state. Stalnaker grounds his arguments in various scripture passages, including descriptions found in Ezekiel, Matthew, and Revelation, highlighting the consistency of Christ's divine nature across different biblical texts. The practical significance of this sermon lies in understanding Christ's attributes of holiness, sovereignty, purity, judgment, and sacrificial love, which collectively affirm the Reformed doctrines of Christology and the nature of God’s justice and mercy.

Daniel chapter 10. I cannot begin to tell you how
much I have enjoyed studying this chapter. I've been looking
at it for about the last two weeks and I have been fascinated
by it. I'm honestly fascinated by this
particular chapter. And I believe, I hope by the
end of today, you'll understand why. I believe you'll see why. For our Bible study, I want us
to focus on the first six verses, Daniel chapter 10, verse one
says, in the third year of Cyrus, king of Persia, a thing was revealed
unto Daniel, whose name was called Belteshazzar. And the thing was
true, but the time appointed was long. and he understood the
thing and had understanding of the vision. In those days, I,
Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant bread,
neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint
myself at all till three whole weeks were fulfilled. And in
the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I was by
the side of the great river, which is Hitticale, then I lifted
up mine eyes and looked, and behold, a certain man, clothed
in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz. His body also was like the barrel,
and his face as the appearance of lightning. and his eyes as
lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in color to polished
brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude."
Do we have any idea who that certain
man was? In verse five, my center margin
for a certain man says that that translates one man. That's what that means. One man,
the man, Jesus Christ. That's who Daniel saw. And when I read the description
of the Lord Jesus Christ right here, it amazed me how consistent
it was with the descriptions that are given in other portions
of scripture. Different times and different
places, men saw him and they described what they saw and it
just perfectly matches his description in his glorified state. And what
I want to do for this Bible study is study that for just one second.
I want us to look at the description of our Lord, this one man, this
certain man, as it's given in the word. Let's read this description
right here one more time. Daniel 10 verse five says, then
I lifted up mine eyes and looked, and behold, a certain man clothed
in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz. His body also was like the barrel,
and that is a clear stone, sometimes also called a jasper stone, like
a diamond. And sometimes they're yellow
in color, but still clear as crystal, very, very clear. His
body also was like the barrel, and his face as the appearance
of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and
his feet like in colored polished brass, and the voice of his words
like the voice of a multitude. Now let's read what some other
places say about our Lord's description. Look back one book to Ezekiel
43. Turn back just a few pages to
Ezekiel 43. Ezekiel 43 verse 1 says, Afterward he brought me to the
gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east. And behold,
the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east. And his voice was like a noise
of many waters. And the earth shined with his
glory. Ezekiel said that's what he looked
like and that's what his voice literally sounded like. Daniel
said that's what he looked like and that's what his voice literally
sounded like. Turn with me to Matthew 17. Matthew 17 verse 1 says, and after six days, Jesus taketh
Peter, James, and John, his brother, and bringeth them up into an
high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them, and
his face did shine as the sun. And his raiment was white as
the light. They said to look at him, to
look into his face was like trying to look into the sun. It was
so bright, the high noon sun. He veiled that while he was here
for us, for men and women. While he was on this earth, he
veiled that. But on the Mount of Transfiguration, He removed
the veil. He took the veil off and they
saw him. And they said trying to look
into his face was the same thing as trying to look right into
the sun. When the Lord appeared to Paul on the road to Damascus,
it literally blinded, it was so bright, it blinded Paul for
three days. Hold your place right here in
Matthew and turn over to Exodus 34. Exodus 34 verse 29 I Remember the first time I read
this I have loved this Exodus 34 29 and it came to pass when
Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tables of Testimony
in Moses hand the Ten Commandments two tables of stone. I It came
to pass when he came down from the mount that Moses wist not,
he knew not, that the skin of his face shone while he talked
with him, God. And when Aaron and all the children
of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and
they were afraid to come near him. And Moses called unto them,
and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned
unto him, and Moses talked with them. And afterward, all the
children of Israel came nigh, and he gave them in commandment
all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. And
till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a veil on his
face. But when Moses went in before
the Lord to speak with him, He took the veil off until he came
out. And he came out and spake unto
the children of Israel that which he was commanded. And the children
of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses' face
shone, and Moses put the veil upon his face again until he
went in to speak with God. He'd take it off and go talk
to the Lord God, and then he'd put that veil on, and that's
what our Lord did for us. Moses' face, he spoke with the
Lord Jesus Christ face to face as a man speaketh with his friend.
And Moses' face was so bright. The Lord's face was so bright.
It wasn't like a sunburn, but we understand something of that.
You know, you stare at the sun long enough and it's gonna show
on your face. But it made Moses' face shine
to the point that all the people, Aaron included, were afraid unless he veiled his face. That's
brightness. The scripture talks about the
brightness of his glory. That's brightness. Go back to
Matthew, this time chapter 24. Matthew 24. This is talking about the Lord's
second coming when he comes back. Matthew 24, verse 24 says, For there shall arise false Christs
and false prophets and shall show great signs and wonders
in so much that if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before.
Wherefore, if they shall say unto you, behold, he's in the
desert, go not forth. Behold, he's in the secret chambers.
Believe it not. For as the lightning cometh out
of the east and shineth even unto the west, so shall also
the coming of the Son of Man be. You know what that lightning
is? His face. When he appears, his face like
lightning. Turn with me to Revelation 1. Revelation 1 verse 10. The Apostle John said, I was
in the Spirit on the Lord's day and heard behind me a great voice
as of a trumpet saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and
the last, and what thou seest, write in a book and send it unto
the seven churches which are in Asia, unto Ephesus, and unto
Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis,
and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. And I turned to see
the voice that spake with me, and being turned, I saw seven
golden candlesticks. And in the midst of the seven
candlesticks, one like unto the son of man, clothed with a garment
down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle,
just like Daniel saw." Same thing. Verse 14, "'His head and his
hairs were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were
as a flame of fire." Just like Daniel said. and his feet like
unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace, and his voice as
the sound of many waters." This account is 600 years later from
Daniel's account. Same man, same man, this same
Jesus, this same God, one man. One certain man, verse 16, and
he had in his right hand seven stars, and out of his mouth went
a sharp two-edged sword. And his countenance was as the
sun shineth in his strength. And when I saw him, I fell at
his feet as dead." And we're going to find out that's exactly
what happened to Daniel. And that's what will happen to
all sinners who truly see this man. Look at Revelation 14. Revelation 14 verse one, and
I looked and lo a lamb stood on Mount Zion and with him and
140 and 4,000 having his father's name written in their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven
as the voice of many waters and as the voice of great thunder. Same voice, exact same voice. Look at Revelation 19. Revelation 19 verse 11, and I
saw heaven opened and behold a white horse and he that sat
upon him was called faithful and true and in righteousness
he doth judge and make war. His eyes were as a flame of fire. Same eyes. One thing we can see from all
this is our Lord is the same yesterday, today, and forever. That's one thing we take from
this. He changes not, therefore we sons of Jacob are not consumed. His physical description, it
reveals a spiritual promise that as he was, he is, and he will
forever be. With that being said, this physical
description may be a physical description. I honestly don't
know. It may be a physical description. They all said the same thing.
They all saw the same thing. They all heard the same thing. There are many things that were
prophesied in the scripture that came to pass, you know, came
to be exactly like it literally said that it was. So many things.
I always repeat that, you know, it said our Lord would be born
of a virgin. You know, you'd read that back
in Isaiah's day and think, well, that has to be speaking spiritually.
No, he was actually born of a virgin. They said he'd be born in Bethlehem.
He was literally born in Bethlehem. They said he would ride into
Jerusalem on the colt of a donkey. He literally rode into Jerusalem
on the colt of a donkey. And this may be describing him
physically, but this is most definitely describing him spiritually. Most definitely. And what all
these believers saw when they looked at him, we can see spiritually
who he is. in his character, in his nature. And when God's people truly see
Christ, all of them see the exact same thing. All of them. Go with me back to Daniel 10. Let's see if the Lord will reveal
to us this one man. Daniel 10 verse 5 says, Then
I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold, a certain man clothed
in linen. Linen was the material that all
of the cloth, there were curtains in the temple, all of the cloth
of the temple, was made of linen. Linen was the material that the
high priest's robe was made from. Linen represents holiness. Holiness. Daniel said, I saw
this man and he was clothed in holiness. Holy, holy, holy is
the Lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of his
glory. Verse five, then I lifted up
mine eyes and looked and behold a certain man clothed in linen,
whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz. That gold is his royalty. That
gold is his majesty. It is his kingship. It is his
worthiness. It is his value. And again, the temple was covered
in it. Cover it with gold. Holiness. Sovereignty. Sovereignty. Verse 6, it says, His body also
was like the barrel, that stone most precious, clear as crystal. That's His purity. That's His righteousness. The
righteousness of His body. works, his deeds, the righteousness
of his body, the purity of his blood. Verse six says, and his
face as the appearance of lightning. That's his glory. That's his
victory. Verse six says, and his eyes
as lamps of fire. That's his judgment. God is a God of judgment. He's a God of judgment. His holiness
and His purity demand judgment. Justice. Judgment. He must punish
sin. You know, that's what people
see when they finally see Jesus Christ as He is. They see He
must punish sin. That's an eye-opening thing to
people in false religion. If somebody in false religion
ever truly sees Christ, that's what they'll say. He is holy. He is sovereign. He is pure. He is just. This is what it is to see Jesus
Christ. Oh, He must punish sin. His holy
justice demands the judgment of punishing sin. But look at
this right here. Verse 6 says, His arms and His
feet like in color to polished brass. That's His sacrifice. That's his substitution sacrifice
for his people. How do you know that? We know
that from Daniel chapter 3. Turn back a few chapters to Daniel
chapter 3. Nebuchadnezzar right here said,
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, if you don't bow down to my image,
I'm going to throw you into a burning fiery furnace. Verse 16. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we are not
careful to answer thee in this matter. If it be so, our God,
whom we serve, is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace,
and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not,
be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods
nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up. Then
was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his visage was
changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Therefore he spake
and commanded that they should heat the furnace one seven times
more than it was known to be heated. And he commanded the
most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach,
and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning, fiery furnace.
Then these men were bound in their coats, their hosen, and
their hats, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst
of the burning, fiery furnace. Therefore, because the king's
commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceeding hot, the flame
of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and
Abednego. And these three men, Shadrach,
Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning,
fiery furnace. Then Nebuchadnezzar the king
was astonished and rose up in haste and spake and said unto
his counselors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst
of the fire? They answered and said unto the
king, True, O king, He answered and said, Lo, I see four men,
loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt,
and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God. Then Nebuchadnezzar
came near to the mouth of the burning fiery furnace, and spake
and said, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, ye servants of
the Most High God. come forth and come hither. Then
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came forth of the midst of the
fire, and the princes, governors, and captains, and the king's
counselors, being gathered together, saw these men upon whose bodies
the fire had no power, nor was in hair of their heads singed,
neither were their coats changed, nor the smell of fire had passed
on them." Why? Christ consumed it all. That's
the reason why. Jesus Christ consumed it all
for them. We just read in Revelation 1,
John said, His feet looked like fine brass as if they burned
in a furnace. They did. They did. Bearing the punishment for his
people, they did the furnace of God's wrath against his people's
sin. As the substitute sacrifice,
his feet did burn in a furnace. Go back to Daniel 10. Verse 5 says, Then I lifted up
mine eyes, and looked, and behold, a certain man, clothed in linen,
whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz. His body
also was like the barrel, and his face as the appearance of
lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his
feet like in color to polished brass. and the voice of his words
like the voice of a multitude. Oh, his word, the voice of his
word, that's his authority. The voice of a multitude, that's
his omniscient, everywhere, all over authority. But Daniel said, Ezekiel said,
John said, it's the voice of many waters. It's the voice of
comfort. It's the voice of peace. It's
the voice of rest. I love listening to the ocean. I thought everybody loved the
ocean. I've told that now for a long time and then people say,
I can't stand the beach. Well, I love the beach. I love
the ocean. I love sitting on the sand and
listening to those waves crash. It sounds like rest to me. It's peace and comfort to me. And that's what a child of God
hears when a child of God hears the words of his voice. Peace, rest, comfort. That's what I pray the Lord will
let us hear today. I want us to hear the sound of his voice.
I want us to hear him. I pray the Lord will let us see
Christ like Daniel did. I pray the Lord will let us hear
the sound of his voice. I pray the Lord will bring the
result to us of seeing Christ and hearing the sound of his
voice. In just a minute, I'm done, in just a minute, we're
going to continue this chapter seeing what the result is of seeing this man. What the
result is of hearing the voice of this man in this way as he's
described in scripture. And it's a glorious result. It's honestly a glorious result.
So Lord willing, we'll look at that in a second. All right,
you're dismissed.
