Kingsport Sovereign Grace Church,
located at 905 Yadkin Street in Kingsport, Tennessee, would
like to invite you to listen to a message of sovereign grace
by their pastor, Gabe Stoniker. And now, Pastor Gabe Stoniker. I invite you to turn with me
this morning to John chapter 4. And our text is going to be
verse 6, but I want to begin reading in verse 1 and read down
through our text. John chapter 4 verse 1 says,
When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that
Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, though Jesus
himself baptized not, but his disciples, he left Judea and
departed again into Galilee. and he must needs go through
Samaria. Then cometh he to a city of Samaria
which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that
Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus
therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the
well, and it was about the sixth hour. When I see my Lord, when
one of these days I get to physically see my Lord, I'm gonna see a
man, my God. The God that I will see with
these two eyes is a man. My God, in order to live for
me, had to be in all points just like me, a man. And verse six right here in John
chapter four says, now Jacob's well was there. Jesus, therefore
being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well, and it
was about the sixth hour. He had to be just like me. So he didn't exempt himself from
being tired. The thought of the Lord God of
heaven being tired is almost unimaginable. This is God, the
almighty, all powerful one. This is God, wearied with his
journey, wearied. But he had to be just like me
to live for me. So he didn't exempt himself from
being tired. Do you realize that after you've
worked 12 long hours, a full day, and you come home and you
plop down in a chair and it's all you can do to keep your eyes
open. Our Lord knows exactly how you feel. Exactly. Wearied. Wearied. Turn with me over to Psalm 103. Psalm 103 verse 13 says, Like
as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that
fear him. For he knoweth our frame, he
remembereth that we are dust. He remembers that we're dust. He remembers what it feels like
to be dust. When he was praying to God in
the garden, to the point that blood was coming out of his body,
his disciples couldn't stay awake. And he finally told him, sleep
on, sleep on. He knows our frame. He remembereth that we are dust. Isn't that comforting? That is
so comforting. Well, back over to John chapter
four, verse six says, now Jacob's well was there, Jesus, therefore,
being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well, and it
was about the sixth hour. He was wearied with his journey. Now, I'm not sure about his journey
prior to this, but I want us to look at his journey up to
this point. Turn back with me to John chapter
1. John 1 verse 28 says, These things were done in Bethabara
beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. That is where John
said, behold the Lamb of God. And they were in a town called
Bethabara beyond Jordan. Now look at John chapter 1 verse
43. It says, the day following, Jesus
would go forth into Galilee. and findeth Philip, and saith
unto him, Follow me. So from Bethabara beyond Jordan,
he went to Galilee. Now look at John 2 verse 1. And
the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee, and the mother
of Jesus was there. So he went to Cana. John 2 verse
12 says, After this he went down to Capernaum, he and his mother
and his brethren and his disciples, and they continued there not
many days. John 2 verse 23 says, Now when he was in Jerusalem
at the Passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name
when they saw the miracles which he did. Jerusalem. John chapter
3 verse 22 says, And after these things came Jesus and his disciples
into the land of Judea. And there he tarried with them
and baptized. That's down near the Dead Sea.
John chapter 4 verse 3 says, he left Judea and departed again
into Galilee. He went back into Galilee. It's
about 70 miles from Judea to Galilee. Two and a half days
walk. Two and a half days walk. He
was all over in his journey. A perfect man. committed to the
work and the ministry of his father. Committed. This one by
whom the worlds were made, this same man is the one who created
the earth he walked on. This same one is now sitting
on this well, wearied with his journey. And he's sitting there
alone. Because chapter 4 verse 8 says,
For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat." So
he's sitting there alone. Now I want to show you something
amazing. If you're looking at this with me in your Bible, look
at chapter 3, verse 13. It says, And no man hath ascended
up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son
of Man, which is in heaven. in heaven. No man hath ascended
up, but he that came down, even the son of man, which is in heaven. Our Lord was telling a man named
Nicodemus that right there at that moment in time, he said,
I came down from heaven, but I'm still in heaven. I'm journeying
through this earth, but I'm still seated on my throne. I'm 100%
man, but I'm still 100% God. Ruling, directing, ordering,
purposing. He could have given one word
from the throne and every single angel in the whole host of heaven
would have flown to him to minister to him, but he didn't give that
command. He didn't give it. Turn with
me over to Matthew chapter 26. Matthew chapter 26 verse 47 says,
And while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and
with him a great multitude with swords and staves from the chief
priests and elders of the people. Now he that betrayed him gave
them a sign, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he. Hold him fast. And forthwith
he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, Master, and kissed him. And Jesus
said unto him, Friend, wherefore art thou come? Then came they,
and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. And behold, one of
them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword,
and struck a servant of the high priest, and smote off his ear. Then said Jesus unto him, Put
up again thy sword into his place, for all they that take the sword
shall perish with the sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now
pray to my Father, and He shall presently give me more than twelve
legions of angels? But how then shall the Scriptures
be fulfilled, that thus it must be? Thus it must be. Thinkest thou that I cannot now
pray to my Father, and He shall presently give me more than twelve
legions of angels? Here's what the word legion means
in the dictionary. It says, the chief subdivision
of the Roman army containing about 6,000 infantry with a contingent
of cavalry. Our Lord said, do you not think
that if I asked my father, he wouldn't immediately send me
more than 72,000 angels? But our Lord didn't ask for that,
did he? He was willingly touched with the feelings of our infirmities.
Willingly. In all points. Back over in John
chapter 4. Verse six says, now Jacob's well
was there. Jesus therefore being wearied
with his journey, sat thus on the well and it was about the
sixth hour. An old writer said, he was just
as really and truly man as he was God. In stressing his absolute
deity, We are in danger of overlooking the reality of his humanity. The Lord Jesus was a perfect
man. He ate and drank, labored and
slept, prayed and wept. The Savior knew what it was to
be weary, not weary of well-doing, but weary in well-doing. But, but, here's what we see in verse
six. Every time we see his humanity,
we see his deity, every time. Every time we see the man, We
see our God every time. Let me show you that in a few
scriptures. Turn with me over to Luke chapter 2. Luke chapter 2 verse 4 says,
And Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth
into Judea unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because
he was of the house and lineage of David. to be taxed with Mary
his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was that
while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should
be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn
son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger
because there was no room for them in the end." No room for
this child, Jesus. Poor thing. Poor, pitiful, helpless
humanity. Now look at verse 8. It says,
and there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field,
keeping watch over their flock by night. And lo, the angel of
the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round
about them, and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto
them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy,
which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day
in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto
you. You shall find the babe wrapped
in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there
was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising
God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth
peace, goodwill toward man. They said, When you see a babe
wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger, That will
be a sign unto you that you've seen God Almighty. That babe is God Almighty. Let's look at another one. Turn
with me over to John chapter 11. John chapter 11. Verse 1 says,
Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town
of Mary and her sister Martha. It was that Mary which anointed
the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose
brother Lazarus was sick. Therefore his sisters sent unto
him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. When Jesus heard that, he said,
This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that
the Son of God might be glorified thereby. Jesus loved Martha and
her sister, and Lazarus. When he had heard, therefore,
that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place
where he was. Then after that, saith he to
his disciples, let us go into Judea again. Verse 17 says, Then
when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four
days already. Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem
about fifteen furlongs, and many of the Jews came to Martha and
Mary to comfort them concerning their brother. Then Martha, as
soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him,
but Mary sat still in the house. Then said Martha unto Jesus,
Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. Verse
28. And when she had so said, she
went her way and called Mary her sister secretly saying, the
master is come and calleth for thee. And as soon as she heard
that she arose quickly and came unto him. Now, Jesus was not
yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met
him. The Jews then which were with her in the house and comforted
her, when they saw Mary that she rose up hastily and went
out, followed her saying, she goeth unto the grave to weep
there. Then when Mary was come where Jesus was and saw him,
she fell down at his feet saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst
been here, my brother had not died. When Jesus therefore saw
her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her,
he groaned in the spirit and was troubled, and said, where
have you laid him? And they said unto him, Lord,
come and see. Jesus wept. Then said the Jews, behold, how
he loved him. Behold how he loved him. The
Lord Jesus groaned and he cried with him. Can you imagine seeing
God stand there crying? He was troubled over this. Verse 38 says, Jesus, therefore,
again, groaning in himself, cometh to the grave. It was a cave and
a stone lay upon it. Jesus said, take ye away the
stone. Martha, the sister of him that
was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh, for
he hath been dead four days. Jesus saith unto her, Said I
not unto thee that if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the
glory of God? Then they took away the stone
from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up
his eyes and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me,
and I knew that thou heardest me always. But because of the
people which stand by, I said it, that they may believe that
thou hast sent me. And when he thus had spoken,
he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead
came forth. bound hand and foot with grave
clothes, and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said
unto them, Loose him, and let him go. Loose him, and let him
go. Oh, he groaned, but then he gave
the mighty commandment, This man is God. He is God. And right here in our text in
John chapter 4 verse 6 says, Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus,
therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the
well, and it was about the sixth hour. Our Lord was wearied with
his journey and sat down on this well. Why? Because verse 4 said,
He must needs go through Samaria. Why? Because verse 5 says, he
had to come to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near
to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
Why? Because verse 7 says, there's
a woman of Samaria who comes there to draw water. And our
Lord Jesus saith unto her, give me to drink. Verse 9 says, Then
saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being
a Jew, askest, Drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the
Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and
said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God and who it is
that saith to thee, give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked
him and he would have given thee living water, living water. Verse 15, the woman saith unto
him, Sir, give me this water that I thirst not, neither come
hither to draw. Jesus saith unto her, Go call
thy husband, and come hither. The woman answered and said,
I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast
well said, I have no husband. For thou hast had five husbands,
and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband. In that saidst
thou truly. The woman saith unto him, Sir,
I perceive that thou art a prophet. I perceive that thou art a prophet. Verse 25 The woman said unto
him, I know that Messiah's cometh, which is called Christ, When
He has come, He will tell us all things. Jesus said unto her,
I that speak unto thee, am He. I that speak unto thee, wearied
with my journey, sitting on this will, am He. Verse 28 says, The
woman then left her water pot, and went her way into the city,
and saith unto the men, Come, see a man, which told me all
things that ever I did. Is not this the Christ? Come, see a man. Is not this
the Christ? Come see a man, is not this God? As our Lord, the man, sat there
wearied with his journey, our Lord, the God, told this woman
every secret in her heart. Oh, how grateful we are that
God became a man. Now let's notice one more thing.
Our text right here, John chapter four, verse five says, then cometh
he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the
parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son, Joseph. Now Jacob's
well was there. Jesus, therefore being wearied
with his journey, set thus on the well, and it was about the
sixth hour. The sixth hour, high noon. Our
Lord had an appointment with this adulterous, sinful woman
who didn't know God and didn't know that she didn't know God.
And do you know where our Lord chose to meet with her? At the
well. At the well. Isaiah 55 says,
ho, everyone that thirsteth, come ye to the waters. He that
hath no money, come ye by and eat. Do you know who that water
is? Christ. That water is Christ. When Moses was running away from
Pharaoh for fear of his life, he ran to a place called Midian
and sat down by a well. Do you know who that well is?
Christ. That's our Lord Jesus Christ,
the place of safety, the place of refuge, the hiding place. Genesis chapter 29. Verses 1
and 2 say, Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the
land of the people of the east. And he looked, and behold, a
well in the field. And, lo, there were three flocks
of sheep lying by it, for out of that well they watered the
flocks. Out of that well they watered
the flocks. That well is Christ, our rest,
our refreshment. Verse 1 says, And in that day
thou shalt say, O Lord, I will praise thee. Though thou wast
angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortest
me. Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust and not be afraid. For the Lord Jehovah is my strength
and my song. He also has become my salvation. Therefore with joy shall you
draw water out of the wells of salvation." That well is Christ. That water is salvation found
in Him. Now our text in John chapter
4 verse 6 says, Now Jacob, the sinner, The sinner. Now, the sinner's well was there. The sinner's well was there. Christ was there. The sinner's
hope was there. The sinner's refuge was there. The sinner's life was there.
And Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on
the well, and it was about the sixth hour. Verse 10, Jesus answered
and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is
that saith to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldst have asked
of him, and he would have given thee living water. Living water,
eternal life. Our Lord said, ask and you'll
receive. All who need it, come to the
well. Come to Christ. Come to the God-man,
and he will give you living water. Until next Sunday morning, may
the Lord bless His Word. You have been listening to a
