All right, let's open back up
to John 5. John chapter 5. I don't know of a greater text
than this in the Bible. I really don't. And the reason
I say that is because we believe that Jesus Christ is God, the
God, the highest God. And in this text right here,
He plainly says for Himself who He is. Verse 19 in John chapter
5 says, Then answered Jesus and said
unto them. Now before I read the rest of
this verse, I want to say that every single
time I come to this verse, just like we looked at this morning
with faith, every time we come to the word faith, every time
I come to this particular verse, I have to stop for just a minute
and make sure I'm reading this correctly. I have to make sure I'm saying
this right. Am I understanding this right? I have to stop and consider the
holiness of this verse. This verse. You're going to see
it when we read it. I absolutely hate the thought,
I hate the thought that these two lips right here and this
tongue and the air that comes out of these lungs and passes
over these vocal cords and the brain that causes all that to
produce words would ever, ever disrespect or disgrace or dishonor
the Holy Son of God. Do you know what I mean? With that being said, verse 19
says this, Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily,
of a truth of a truth, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing
of Himself. That's Christ. But what He seeth
the Father do. For what things soever He doeth,
these also doeth the Son likewise. That's the Word of Jesus Christ
Himself. The humility The humility of
our Lord. The absolute humility. The one
who thought it not robbery to be equal with God. He made himself
of no reputation and took upon him the form of a servant and
was made in the likeness of men. The one whom God the Father told. God the Father said this. Thy
throne, O God, is forever and ever. It says in verse 19, Verily, verily,
I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what
He seeth the Father do. For what things soever He doeth,
these also doeth the Son likewise. Can't we see the love The love
that the son has for his father. While I was writing this out,
I was thinking about my very own father. The absolute love that the son
has for his father. Can't we see the love that the
father has for his son? Man, do we love our children.
And that's a pitiful example and a pitiful excuse. Love. God the Son desires nothing more
than to honor His Father. And God the Father desires nothing
more than to honor His Son. The first song we sang tonight
said, Oh, the love that drew salvation's plan. And we know
that that rhymes with everything, so that's the right word. But
the correct word is purpose. Oh, the grace that brought it
down to man. Love, love, love. Verse 20 says, For the Father
loveth the Son. Isn't that wonderful? Here's the title of this message.
The Oneness of the Father and the Son. the oneness. Right here in John 5 we have
seven proofs that our Lord Jesus Christ is God. Seven proofs. It's called the
deity of Christ. And what that means is Christ
is God. This man Jesus who everybody
talks about and everybody knows or everybody thinks they know,
is the highest God. Seven proofs right here in John
5. The first one is where we started
reading back in verse 17. It says, But Jesus answered them,
My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. Now look back at John
chapter 4 verse 34. says Jesus saith unto them, my
meat is to do the will of him that sent me and to finish his
work. What work? Every work. Every work. But here are the
two greatest that pertain to me. The first one is the work
of creation. I wouldn't be here if He didn't
create me. Only God can do that. Only God can speak something
out of nothing. Only God can do that. In the
beginning was the Word. The Word was with God. The Word
was God. The Word became flesh. All things
were made by Jesus Christ. Right? Our Lord created this world,
He created everything in it. Only God can do that. Only God
can do that. Here's the second great work
that involves me. The work of redeeming that creation
back to its original state. We were in Genesis 1. Every day
that the Lord created, He saw that it was good. It was very
good. And we lost it, and we became
sinful, and we became vile, and we became bad, very bad. And when our Lord came to finish
His Father's work, He restored that back to what it was. Isn't that wonderful? Only God
can do that. It was the Lord Jesus Christ
who said, Father, I have glorified thee on the earth. I have finished
the work which thou gavest me to do. Finished the work. God
the Father and God the Son are one in the work of redemption. My Father works and I work. We're
one. Alright, the second proof is
back in our text, John 5, look at verse 19, that's what we started
reading. Then answered Jesus and said
unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, the Son can do nothing
of Himself, but what He seeth the Father do. For what things
soever He doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. The Son can
do nothing of Himself, but what he seeth the Father do." That
doesn't mean he's restricted. He wants to save you, but he
can't. That doesn't mean that his power is limited at all. What he's saying is the Son can't
do anything other than what the Father desires to do because
they're one. They cannot disagree. Cannot. They are one in will. They are
one in purpose. They are one in mind. They are
one in heart. They're one. Turn with me to
John 14. This is an amazing verse. John
14 verse 10 says, Believest thou not that I am in the Father,
and the Father in me? The works that I speak unto you
I speak not of myself, but the Father that dwelleth in me, he
doeth the works. Christ said, What you see me
doing is my Father working in me. They're one. Our third proof is back in our
text, John chapter 5, verse 20. For the Father loveth the Son,
and showeth Him all things that Himself doeth. And He will show
Him greater works than these that you may marvel. The Father
showeth him all things. They are one in knowledge. One in knowledge. Now think about
this one. No man, no woman, no creature,
no being, even Satan, whom I hate to say his name. No one can know the mind of God. No one. Our adversary, the devil,
is a spiritual being. But he's not all-knowing. He's
not. I remember the very first time
I heard that and realized that. He is not omniscient. That means
he does not have a clue what tomorrow holds. Isn't that something? He has no idea. He's living this
day by day. Now he would know what the end
is going to be if he was a believer, but he's not. Right? No man can know the mind of God. Now go to Romans 11. Romans 11, look at verse 33. Oh, the depth of the riches,
both of the wisdom and knowledge of God. How unsearchable are
His judgments and His ways past finding out. For who hath known
the mind of the Lord, or who hath been His counselor? It's
not possible. It's past finding out. Now go
to Proverbs 8. Proverbs chapter 8 and look at
verse 24. When there were no depths, I
was brought forth. When there were no fountains
abounding with water. Before the mountains were settled.
Before the hills was I brought forth. While as yet he had not
made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust
of the world, when he prepared the heavens, I was there. When he set a compass upon the
face of the depth, when he established the clouds above, when he strengthened
the fountains of the deep, When He gave to the sea His decree
that the water should not pass His commandment, when He appointed
the foundations of the earth, then was I by Him, as one brought
up with Him. And I was daily His delight,
rejoicing always before Him." That's the Lord Jesus Christ
talking about Him and His Father. He said, I was there. I was right
there beside Him. He showed me all things. He told
me all things. No one else was there. It was
the Father, the Son, and the Spirit. That's it. One in knowledge. Our fourth proof. All right?
Go back to our text. Verse 21 says, For as the Father raiseth up
the dead and quickeneth them, even so the Son quickeneth whom
He will. They are one in sovereignty. One in sovereignty. Here's the
key to this verse. It's the last three words. Whom
He will. He just healed a lame man. A
few weeks ago, we were a few verses up. This lame man, 38
years, right? Lame. There were tons of lame
people laying out. Tons of them. There were sick
people everywhere. Tons of them. He only chose to
heal one. Just one. That's his sovereignty. That's his right. whom He will,
as the Father, even so the Son. They are one in sovereignty. The fifth proof, verse 22 in
our text, says, For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed
all judgment to the Son, that all men should honor the Son,
even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son
honoreth not the Father which hath sent him. Now I hope the Lord will let
me leave my notes for a minute. Sometimes notes are good. Sometimes
you just need to leave them for a minute. They are one in honor. Now that's the problem with religion. God the Father and God the Son
are not one in honor. You know that? That is the problem. Most people think about God,
God the Father, as being their judge. And they think about Jesus
Christ as being their lawyer. You know that they think about
God, the father is being their judge and Jesus Christ is their
lawyer. Now, it is true he does make
intercession for us to his father. There is one mediator between
God and man, Jesus Christ, the righteous. We have an advocate
with the father. The Father is the one who's been
sinned against. He's the one who's been wronged.
But the Father is not the judge. He's not the judge. And if the
world would ever get a hold of that, they would fear God. They would fear this Jesus who
they talk about. Verse 22 says, For the Father
judgeth no man. Isn't that something? Gentle
Jesus, meek and mild, is the one who's going to kill sinners
and put them in hell. Gentle Jesus, meek and mild,
is the one who's going to rain fire and brimstone on this earth
and burn it up, just like in the days of Noah. And we take
our children, and we said this before, you put them in their
nursery, they're born, and they got the thing, and let's decorate
it with Noah's Ark. And what we're saying is, God killed everybody. Isn't that sweet? Eight souls, eight souls out
of millions, God spared, and it was Jesus Christ who said,
open up waters, come forth, flood them, kill them, kill them. And we don't know the hour of
the day, but one day very soon, we're going to be going about
our business. I'm going to either be sitting here in the study. It
might be during a service. We might be in John one preaching,
behold the lamb. And one of these days you're
going to be fixing an axle and you're going to be on the phone
and you're going to be this and you're going to be that. And
all of a sudden we're all at one moment in time, going to hear
trumpets roar through the sky. We're not going to wonder, did
I just hear trumpets? The Trump shall resound. And
we're going to look up and third heaven is going to open up. And
the Lord shall descend and we're going to know him when we see
him. And we're going to see all of
his people with them, and we're going to know everyone by name.
We're going to see our loved ones and the Lord shall descend. And then after that, the judgment. And whoever he did not choose
to pull up with him into safekeeping in glory, iron brimstone's coming
down. But I don't see anybody decorating
their nurseries with comets and it's the same thing. It's the
same thing. And if people would stop for
a minute in their life and realize Jesus Christ is going to kill
me if I don't bow to him. It changed people. It would change
people. God, the Father, it says, judgeth
no man, verse 22, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son. Committed all judgment to the
Lord Jesus Christ. Now, if you're in a court, how
do you address the judge? If you want to win this case,
if you want to get off, how do you address the judge? Your honor. Your honor. Why did God the father
give all judgment to God the son? Verse 23 says that all men
should honor the son, even as they honor the father. That's
what's missing in church. That's what's missing in preaching.
That's what's missing in the world. He that honoreth not the
Son, honoreth not the Father which hath sent him. Period. If a man doesn't honor Jesus
Christ in the way he deserves to be honored as the highest
God, then they are not honoring God the Father. They are one in honor. One in honor. You know, we all have these things and we
all say these things, but let's hope and pray the Lord will take
these little phrases out of our mouth that we've heard growing
up. You know, something, you see something shocking and you
say, well, Jesus. You see something, Lord, oh,
everybody's always saying, Lord, have mercy. One of these days,
people are going to be crying, Lord, have mercy. I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. Man, we honor the son, we honor the
son, they are one in honor, one in honor. Jesus Christ is God. He's God. Verse 24 says, Verily,
verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth
on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into
condemnation, but is passed from death unto life. I want to know
something about that. Verse 25 says, Verily, verily,
I say unto you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall
hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall
live. For as the Father hath life in
Himself, so hath He given to the Son to have life in Himself. They are one in spiritual life-giving
ability. Oh, I know God. O Alan Jackson,
bless his heart, sang that song, I Know Jesus and I Talk to God.
Are they two different people? The hour is coming when the dead,
the spiritually dead, shall hear the voice of the Son of God. The Son of God. Whoever hears
my word and believes on him that sent me has been given life from
us. That's what he's saying. The
hour is coming and now is when the dead shall hear. A dead man
cannot hear anything. That's impossible. It's impossible. Yeah, with man
it's impossible. But the hour is coming, and now
is when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and
they that hear shall live." If God the Son ever opens up a sinner's
ears and breathes His Spirit into their soul, they're going
to hear. You're nothing like I thought
you were. Nothing. And all who hear and believe,
okay, hath life. Isn't that good news? Shall live. When you see that
take place, you're going to know that I and my Father are one
in imparting life. And you hath he quickened who
were dead. Dead. Just dead. Didn't know God. Thought I did.
Had no idea. Didn't hear anything. Dead. The seventh proof. Okay, our
last proof. is in John 5 verse 27. And hath given him authority
to execute judgment also because he is the son of man. They are one in authority. Because he is the son of man. Because God the Son became flesh
and walked this earth as a man. Because He was despised, rejected,
humiliated, cursed. Because He went through all that
in His Father's work, obeying His Father's command. Because
of that, The stone which the builder set it not has become
the chief cornerstone. Because he went through all that
fulfilling his father's work, his father has said this. He
said, Behold my servant, in whom I am well pleased. Because of
all that, every knee will bow. And every tongue is going to
confess. either right now to the saving
of their soul or that day in the judgment of their soul. Every
knee will bow to Him and every tongue is going to confess that
He is Lord. Jesus Christ is Lord. I love this part. To the glory
of God the Father. God the Father loves His Son.
Or actually I should say His Son. And God the Son loves His
Father. And the Son's glory is the Father's
glory. That is the Father's happiness. That's His desire. That's His
heart's love to be one in authority with God His Son. Now here's
the good news. As they are, so are we. All right, we're going to close
with John 17. Go with me to John 17. John 17 verse 21 says, that they
all may be one as thou, Father, art in me. and I in thee, that
they also may be one in us, that the world may believe that thou
hast sent me, and the glory which thou gavest me I have given them,
that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and thou
in me, that they may be made perfect in one. and that the
world may know that thou hast sent me and hast loved them as
thou hast loved me. Amen. Let's stand together.
