All right, turn back with me
to John chapter 4. While I was studying this, I
don't know if you remember, but we actually looked at this not
too long ago. It was a few months back. It was before I moved here, so
it was quite a few months back. But we looked at the whole story,
and we're going to again. We've come to it. But many things stood out to me about
Samaria and the Samaritans, and this woman in particular, what
she said to our Lord, what He said to her. There's a lot of
interesting learning in that. And Lord willing we'll look at
that next time. Something really grabbed my attention in verse
6. And I hope that the Lord will
bless this to us. It was a blessing to me. John chapter
4 verse 6 says, Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus, therefore, being wearied
with His journey, sat thus on the well, and it was about the
sixth hour." Now, we just looked at our Lord
in this way this morning, and we're going to look at Him this
way until we die. But this thought struck me more
so here than even before. One of these days, I'm going
to leave this world. And when I see my Lord, I'm going
to see a man. What am I going to see when I
get there? I'm going to see a man. That's what I'm going to see. My God, in order to live for
me, He had to be in all points just like me. And verse 6 says, Now Jacob's
well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied
with his journey, sat thus on the well, and it was about the
sixth hour. He had to be just like me. So he didn't exempt himself from
being tired. I get tired. You get tired. We all get tired,
don't we? Do you realize that after you've
worked 12 long hours, driven an hour both ways, And you come home, and you plop
down in your chair, and it's all you can do to keep your eyes
open. Our Lord knows exactly how you feel. Isn't that amazing? He knows exactly how you feel.
Turn with me to Psalm 103. Psalm 103, look at verse 13. Like as a father pitieth his
children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear Him, for He knoweth
our frame. He remembereth that we are dust. He remembers what it feels like
to feel like dust. He was never dust. Not like us. But He knows our frame. He remembers what it feels like
to feel like dust. Low. Weary. When He was praying
to God in the garden, to the point that blood was coming out
of His body, His disciples couldn't stay awake. Did He get angry with them? No. He did say, you couldn't stay
awake for an hour. But He finally said, sleep on. Just sleep on. He knows our frame and He remembereth
that we are dust. I think that's so comforting.
So comforting. When I, it doesn't matter what
it is we do, but especially now this is what I do. And sometimes
I stand up and I just feel so tired. In my mind it can't focus. And I just feel so weak and insufficient. And it's comforting to me to
think, He knows my frame. He knows our frame. Back to our
text in John 4 verse 6 says, Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus
therefore being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the
well, and it was about the sixth hour. He was wearied with his
journey. Now I'm not sure about his journey
prior to this, I didn't study back that far, but turn with
me to John chapter 1. John 1 verse 28 says, These things
were done in Beth-Aborah beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. That's where John said, Behold
the Lamb. They were in a town called Bethabara beyond Jordan. Okay? Now look at John 1 verse
43. The day following, Jesus would
go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow
me. So He went from Bethabara beyond Jordan to Galilee, possibly Bethsaida specifically. Look at verse 44. Now, Philip
was of Bethsaida. That's in Galilee. All right,
now look at John 2, verse 1. And the third day there was a
marriage in Cana. That's in Galilee. So he walked to Cana. Now look
at John 2 verse 12. After this, He went down to Capernaum. He and His mother and His brethren,
His disciples, and they continued there not many days. John 2 verse
23 says, Now when He was in Jerusalem, so He walked after that to Jerusalem
at the Passover and the feast days. John chapter 3 verse 22 says,
And after these things came Jesus and His disciples into the land
of Judea. And there He tarried with them
and baptized. That's down around the Dead Sea.
And then John chapter 4 verse 3 says, He left Judea and departed
again into Galilee. Now I looked at the map in the
back of the Bible. And you have the Mediterranean
Sea, and you have the Dead Sea, and the River Jordan will take
you up to the Sea of Galilee. And he started beyond Jordan
in Bethabara, and he went around to Bethsaida, and Cana, and Capernaum,
and he went down to about middle ways in the Mediterranean is
Jerusalem. And he walked all the way down to Judea, down at
the bottom. And then he went from Judea back
up to Galilee. And from where he was in Judea
to Galilee is about 70 miles. Two and a half days of walking,
it said. And that's over 150 miles or more. This perfect man committed to
the work of the ministry, in the work of His Father. This
One by whom the world was made, all the worlds were made, is
now sitting on this well, wearied with His journey. He's walked
a long way as a man, and He's sitting there alone. He's by
Himself. Look at chapter 4 verse 8. It
says, For His disciples were gone away unto the city to buy
meat. So He's sitting there by Himself.
Now I want to show you something amazing that a man named Arthur
Pink showed me. Look at chapter 3 verse 13. Our Lord said, No man hath ascended
up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son
of Man, which is in heaven. No man hath ascended up to heaven,
but he that, past tense, came down from heaven, even the Son
of Man which is in heaven." Our Lord is telling Nicodemus right
there in that moment in time. He says, I came down from heaven,
but I am still in heaven. I'm journeying through this earth,
but I am still seated on my throne. I never left it. I am 100% man, but I am still 100% God. I'm not absent from my throne. I am currently ruling, directing,
ordering, purposing. Now listen to this. He could
have given one word from the throne while He was seated on
His throne. And every single angel in the
whole host of heaven would have flown to Him to minister to Him
right then and there. He was by Himself. But He didn't
give that command. He could have. But He didn't
give that command. Turn with me to Matthew 26. I love our Lord. I really do. Matthew 26, verse 47 says, And while he yet spake, lo, Judas,
one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with
swords and staves from the chief priests and elders of the people.
Now he that betrayed him gave them a sign, saying, Whomsoever
I shall kiss, that same as he, hold him fast." Now Judas was
with the Lord. He knows nobody can hold him.
They tried to throw him off cliffs and everything else, and he just
walked right through the crowd. What he means is he was an unbeliever.
Verse 49, And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, Master,
and kissed Him. And Jesus said unto him, Friend,
wherefore art thou come? Then came they, and laid hands
on Jesus, and took Him. And behold, one of them which
were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword,
and struck a servant of the high priests, and smote off his ear.
Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place,
for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to my Father, and He shall
presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? But how then shall the Scriptures
be fulfilled that thus it must be? He said, don't you think I could, if I
needed help, don't you think I could call my Father? And right
now He'd give me 12 legions of angels. You know why I'm not
calling it? Because then the Scriptures wouldn't be fulfilled.
And it must be. Now listen to this. Legion, in
our Bible dictionary, says this. It's the chief subdivision of
the Roman army. containing about 6,000 infantry
with a contingent of cavalry. So our Lord said, do you not
think that if I asked my Father, He wouldn't immediately send
me more than 72,000 angels? But He didn't ask for that, did
He? He was willingly touched with the feelings of our infirmity,
willingly. All right, go back to our text
in John chapter four, verse six says, now Jacob's well was there. Jesus, therefore being wearied
with his journey, sat thus on the well, and it was about the
sixth hour. I want to just quote something
I got from Arthur Pink. He said He was just as really
and truly man as He was God. In stressing His absolute deity,
as we love to do, we are in danger of overlooking the reality of
His humanity. The Lord Jesus was a perfect
man. He ate and drank, labored and
slept, prayed and wept. The Savior knew what it was to
be weary. Not weary of well-doing, but
weary in well-doing. But here's what we see in verse
six. Every time we see His humanity, we see His deity. Now this is
my favorite part of this message. Every single time we see the
man, we see our God. Every single time. Turn with
me over to Luke chapter 2. Luke chapter 2 verse 4 says,
And Joseph also went up from Galilee out of the city of Nazareth
into Judea unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because
he was of the house and lineage of David, to be taxed with Mary
his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that
while they were there, the days were accomplished, that she should
be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn
son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger,
because there was no room for them in the inn." Poor thing. Wrapped in swaddling clothes.
laid in a manger, there was no room for him. Poor, pitiful,
helpless humanity. Verse 8, And there were in the
same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over
their flock by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord
came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about
them, and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them,
Fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy,
which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day
in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And
this shall be a sign unto you. You shall find the babe wrapped
in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there
was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising
God and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth
peace, good will toward men. And it came to pass, as the angels
were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one
to another, Let us now go even to Bethlehem, and see this thing
which has come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto
us. And they came with haste, and found Mary and Joseph and
the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they
made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning
this child. And all they that heard it, wondered
at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary
kept all these things and pondered them in her heart." They said, this heavenly host
that appeared. As soon as he was born, lying
in a manger, the heavenly host appeared. And they said, when
you see a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger,
that's going to be a sign unto you. that you've seen God Almighty. That's how you'll know you've
seen the Almighty God. Let's look at another one. Go with me to John chapter 11. John chapter 11 verse 1 says,
Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town
of Mary and her sister Martha. It was that Mary which anointed
the Lord with ointment and wiped His feet with her hair, whose
brother Lazarus was sick. Therefore his sister sent unto
him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. Now
look at verse 6. When He had heard, therefore,
that He was sick, He abode two days still in the same place
where He was. Then after that, saith He to
His disciples, Let us go into Judea again." Now look at verse
17. Then when Jesus came, He found
that He had lain in the grave four days already. Now Bethany
was nigh unto Jerusalem about fifteen furlongs off, And many
of the Jews came to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning
their brother. Then Martha, as soon as she heard
that Jesus was coming, went and met Him, but Mary sat still in
the house. Then said Martha unto Jesus,
Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother had not died." Now
look at verse 28. And when she had so said, she
went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying,
The Master is come, and calleth for thee. And as soon as she
heard that, she rose quickly and came unto Him. Now Jesus
was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha
met Him. The Jews then which were with
her in the house and comforted her, when they saw Mary that
she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She
goeth unto the grave to weep there. Then when Mary was come
where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell down at His feet, saying
unto Him, Lord, if Thou hadst been here, my brother had not
died. When Jesus therefore saw her
weeping, And the Jews also, weeping, which came with her, he groaned
in the Spirit and was troubled, and said, Where have you laid
him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. Jesus wept. Then said the Jews, Behold, how
he loved him. The Lord groaned and He cried
with them. That's a holy thought to think
of our Lord hugging them, bringing them in, and just sitting there
and just weeping and just crying with them and just being troubled
in spirit and saying, where'd you lay Him? Where is He? Verse 38. Jesus, therefore, again
groaning in Himself, cometh to the grave. It was a cave and
a stone lay on it. Jesus said, Take ye away the
stone. Martha, the sister of Him that
was dead, said unto Him, Lord, by this time He stinketh, for
He hath been dead four days. And Jesus said unto her, Said
I not unto thee, that if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest
see the glory of God? Then they took away the stone
from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up
His eyes and said, Father, I thank Thee that Thou hast heard me,
and I knew that Thou hearest me always. But because of the
people which stand by, I said it, that they may believe that
Thou hast sent me. And when He thus had spoken,
He cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead
came forth, bound hand and foot with grave clothes, and his face
was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose
him, and let him go." That's God talking. Jesus wept. This morning we read about the
Lord being so exhausted, He was asleep in the bottom of that
ship during a huge storm. And then He walked out on the
bow and He said, Peace, be still. Every time we see His humanity,
we see His deity, every time. Well, right here in our text,
John chapter 4, verse 6 says, Jacob's well was there, Jesus,
therefore, being wearied with His journey, sat thus on the
well, and it was about the sixth hour. Our Lord was wearied with His
journey, and He sat down on this well. Why? Because verse 4 said, He must
needs go through Samaria. He walked all the way back up
to Samaria. Why? Because verse 5 says, he
had to come to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near
to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.
Why? Because verse 7 says, there's
a woman of Samaria who comes there to draw water. That's why. And Jesus saith unto her, give
me to drink. Verse 9, Then saith the woman
of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest
drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have
no dealings with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto
her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith
to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldst have asked of him, and
he would have given thee living water. Verse 15, the woman saith
unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come
hither to draw. Jesus saith unto her, Go call
thy husband, and come hither. The woman answered and said,
I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast
well said, I have no husband, for thou hast had five husbands. and he whom thou now hast is
not thy husband. In that saidst thou truly." The
woman said unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. How
do you know all that stuff? Verse 25, The woman saith unto
him, I know that Messiah's cometh, which is called Christ. When
He is come, He will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her,
I that speak unto thee am He. Verse 28, The woman then left
her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the
men, Come see a man. I've seen a man. You're not going
to believe this man. Come see a man. which told me
all things that ever I did, is not this the Christ? I know of
a man who knows everything I've ever done in my life. Is not
that the Christ? As our Lord, the man, sat there
wearied with his journey, Our Lord, the God, told this woman
every secret in her heart. I know everything about you. How grateful we are that God
became a man. We could never know anything
of God, never have any union with God, never be accepted by
God, had God not become a man. Now let's notice one more thing,
okay? Our text in chapter 4, verse 5 says, Then cometh he to a city of Samaria,
which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that
Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus
therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the
well. And it was about the sixth hour,
high noon. Our Lord had an appointment with
this adulterous, sinful woman. A woman who didn't know God.
A woman who didn't know that she didn't know God. And do you
know where our Lord chose to meet with her? At the well. Now turn with me to a couple
more places, Genesis 21. Abraham is casting out Sarah's
handmaid, Hagar, who bare to him Ishmael, but he was not the
promised son. And Abraham is now casting her
out with this son. Genesis chapter 21 verse 14 says,
And Abraham rose up early in the morning and took bread, and
a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her
shoulder, and the child, and sent her away. And she departed
and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba. And the water was
spent in the bottle, and she cast the child under one of the
shrubs. And she went and sat her down
over against him a good way off, as it were a bow shot, for she
said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over
against him and lifted up her voice and wept. And God heard
the voice of the lad. And the angel of God called to
Hagar out of heaven and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? Fear not, for God hath heard
the voice of the lad where he is. Arise, lift up the lad, and
hold him in thine hand, for I will make him a great nation.' And
God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water. And she
went and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad to drink. And God was with the lad, and
he grew and dwelt in the wilderness and became an archer." This outcast
who had nothing left, God opened her eyes to see the one thing
that could meet her desperate need, a well. This well is Jesus Christ. When Moses was running away from
Pharaoh for fear of his life, he ran to Midian And it says,
He sat down by a well. That's our Lord Jesus Christ.
The place of safety. It's a place of refuge. The hiding
place. Turn over to Genesis chapter
29. Genesis 29 verse 1 says, Then
Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people
of the east. And he looked, and behold, a
well in the field. And, lo, there were three flocks
of sheep lying by it. For out of that well they watered
the flocks. That well is Christ. He's our
rest. He's our refreshment. Now you
can listen if you want to. This is Isaiah chapter 12. Isaiah 12 verse 1 says, And in
that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise Thee, though Thou
wast angry with me, Thine anger is turned away, and Thou comfortest
me. Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust and not be afraid,
for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song. He also is become
my salvation. Therefore with joy shall you
draw water out of the wells of salvation." The well is Christ. The water
is salvation found in Him. That's what it is. Now our text,
John 4, verse 6 says, Now Jacob's well
was there. Now the sinner's well was there. That's where I want to be. I
want to be wherever my well is. Jesus, therefore, being wearied
with his journey, sat thus on the well. And it was about the
sixth hour. And there came a woman of Samaria
to draw water, and Jesus said unto her, Give me to drink. For his disciples were gone away
unto the city to buy meat. Then saith the woman of Samaria
unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, ask drink of me,
which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings
with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto
her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith
to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked of him, and
he would have given thee living water. Eternal life. You don't even know what to ask
for. Our Lord said, ask and you'll
receive. All who need it, come to this
well. Come to Christ. Come to the God-man. And He'll give you living water.
Isn't that wonderful? Next time that we look at this,
we're going to look at that again in a different light. But that's
a wonderful thing to see. All right, stand together with
me.
