Psalms

The sermon "A Soul Lifting Song & Prayer" by Paul Mahan centers on Psalm 25, emphasizing the importance of prayer and trust in God amidst life's afflictions. Mahan argues that like David, believers should continuously lift their souls to God, recognizing Him as their ultimate refuge. He discusses key verses, such as David's heartfelt pleas for mercy and deliverance, linking them with the assurance of God's faithfulness as expressed in Psalm 37 and Psalm 91. The sermon highlights that true trust in God leads to the soul's comfort, encouraging believers to rely on God's Word and to intercede for one another, which reinforces the Reformed doctrines of grace and assurance.

Key Quotes

“The life breath of every believer is prayer. It is vital; it is essential.”

“Trusting and believing the Lord is our comfort, our peace.”

“He'll pluck my feet out of the net... the Gospel will gather His people out of this Red Sea.”

“No one who's ever trusted the Lord has been disappointed.”

What does the Bible say about lifting up our souls to God?

The Bible encourages believers to lift up their souls to God as a sign of trust and devotion.

Psalm 25 opens with a beautiful declaration where David states, 'Unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.' This act of lifting our souls is a profound expression of our dependence on God, recognizing Him as our refuge. Throughout Scripture, this posture symbolizes trust and reliance on God's goodness and mercy, encouraging believers to pour out their hearts to Him in prayer and earnestness. When we lift our souls to God, we acknowledge our need for Him and His providence in our lives.

Psalm 25:1-2

How do we know that God is our refuge?

We know God is our refuge through His promises in Scripture and the testimony of our faith.

The concept of God as our refuge is a recurring theme in the Psalms, emphasizing His role as the protector and deliverer of His people. For instance, Psalm 91 states that the Lord is our refuge and fortress. When we trust in Him, we experience His protective care, leading to a peace that surpasses understanding. Throughout the history of Israel, we see how God delivered His people in times of trouble, affirming His promise to be their refuge. In trusting God, we find comfort and assurance that He is always present, even in the midst of trials.

Psalm 91:2, Psalm 25:20

Why is trusting in God important for Christians?

Trusting in God is vital for Christians as it anchors our faith and sustains us through life's challenges.

Trusting in God is foundational to the Christian life because it reflects our belief in His character and faithfulness. Throughout Psalm 25, David repeatedly emphasizes his trust in the Lord, recognizing that true peace and security come from relying on Him. Trusting God means acknowledging that His ways are higher than our own and that He works all things for our good (Romans 8:28). This trust provides strength and comfort, especially in trials, knowing that God holds all things in His hands and is working according to His perfect will.

Romans 8:28, Psalm 25:2-3

What does the Bible say about mercy and forgiveness?

The Bible teaches that God's mercy and forgiveness are abundant and offered through Christ.

The Scriptures emphasize the immeasurable mercy of God, particularly in how He forgives our iniquities. In Psalm 25, David pleads for God's mercy, asking, 'For thy name's sake, O Lord, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.' This plea highlights the understanding that our sins warrant judgment, but God's mercy, as found in Christ, offers forgiveness and restoration. The New Testament further reveals that Jesus, through His sacrifice, provides ultimate forgiveness for all who believe. God's mercy is not just a concept but an active force that redeems and restores those who turn to Him.

Psalm 25:11, Luke 6:36, Ephesians 1:7

Psalm 25 is a prayer and a song
that keep telling us, reminding us, Singing is good for us. It lifts
up our hearts and our spirits. Prayer is vital. It's the life
breath of every believer. The reason you love the Psalms
so much is most of them are prayers. David is pouring out his heart
unto the Lord. He tells us to do the same. Pour
out your heart unto the Lord at all times. God's a refuge.
It's our only refuge. So this is a wonderful prayer
and David It was like all of us, up and down, up and down,
trouble of his heart, affliction and pain. I don't know if he
was going through some bodily suffering at the time, maybe.
He went through much like, well, more than most of us. He fought
battles and was wounded. Had many enemies and so many
things here that we can relate to. I just about didn't get past
the first three verses. In fact, I didn't. And so I started
all over again. And I intend to go through all
of this. But he begins his prayer and his song, Under Thee, O Lord,
do I lift up my soul. Our souls get bowed down, don't
they? The Lord lifteth up all that
are bowed down. And we need to lift up our souls
unto Him. He'll lift up our spirits. He'll
lift us up if we lift our souls and our hearts unto the Lord.
Unto Thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. O my God, I trust
in Thee. Let me just remind you, old and
young, to never utter those three words. Oh my God, except to God. See, this is a prayer and those
words are reserved for our God. Oh my God, never utter them before
man in any way, shape, form or fashion. Okay. Only utter them
from the heart in sincerity as a prayer unto God. Oh my God.
And he'll honor that. He'll hear you. Don't get used
to hearing it either. Oh my God, I trust in Thee. Do
you? Trust means believe. Believe
Him. I'm getting older, and David
said, I've been young and now I'm old, and I've never seen
the righteous forsaken, or a seed begging bread, and I haven't
either. And trusting and believing the Lord is our comfort, our
peace, Listen to Psalm 90. I tell you to read Psalm 91. I tell you to read 90 and 91
constantly. But this is the Psalm of Moses,
one of the oldest ones. He said, The Lord is my refuge,
my fortress, and my God. In Him will I trust. Surely He
will deliver you from the snare of the fowler, which so many
people are ensnared by. He'll cover you with His feathers
under His wings. You'll trust. His truth will
be your shield and your buckle. He said, you'll not be afraid. Psalm 37. The Lord is my salvation. Of whom should I be afraid? He
says, you've made the Lord your refuge. No evil will befall you. No, no, no, no. Those that love
the Lord, all things work together for good. Do you trust the Lord? I encourage you to trust Him. I trust Him. Let me not be ashamed. Let me not be ashamed. He says
this two or three times. Read on with me. Let not mine
enemies triumph over me. Yea, let none that wait on thee
be ashamed. Let them be ashamed which transgress
without cause. Look at verse 20. Oh, keep my
soul. and deliver me, let me not be
ashamed." Now, as I said, I just about didn't get past this because men glory in their shame. And they're ashamed of God's
glory. Oh, but let us be ashamed of ourselves. But glory in our
God. And yet, David says, I don't
want to be ashamed. I don't want to feel this guilt. I don't want to be put to shame
when it's all over. Because when this whole world
is over, the Lord is going to put all unbelievers, all who
reject Christ, to shame, open shame. But those that trust the
Lord will never be put to shame. Listen to this. In Mark 8, our
Lord said this, and I'll turn for you for the sake of time.
In Mark chapter 8, He says this, so much as He said here in this
chapter. He said, whoever will save his
life shall lose it. Your reputation, your name, your
influence, your old friends and all that. lose your life. But whosoever shall lose his
life for my sake and the gospel, the same shall save him. He goes
on to say, whosoever shall be ashamed of me and my words in
this adulterous and sinful generation, of him shall the Son of Man be
ashamed when he comes in his glory. Men are so proud, the
world is so proud of themselves. Oh, man. Let us be ashamed of
ourselves, but we don't want to be put to open shame. I don't
want to be ashamed of my Lord, though, do you? Let not mine
enemies, verse 2, let not mine enemies triumph over me. David,
all through the psalm, I forget how many times, 80, over a hundred
times, I think, talks about his enemies. And down in verse 19,
he says, consider mine enemies, there are many. And you have
many. You just don't see them. You
just don't know it, because the Lord is so merciful, because
He heads you about. He gives His angels, Psalm 91.
He gives His angels charge over you, and you don't see it. Like
that servant of Elijah, you know, Elisha, that went out there and
saw all those enemies surrounding him, and Elisha said, Lord, open
his eyes. And he saw that they were more
with him than it was against him. Give us His angel's chart,
but we have enemies. The world is not our friend.
A man's enemies should be those of his own household. Try to
woo you away from the Lord. If they don't know the Lord,
they'll try to woo you away from the Lord. The Lord's the one that
said that, didn't He? What a friend we have in the
Lord Jesus. He's a true and faithful. Can
we find a friend so faithful? No. Not in this world. So he's
to be trusted. Right? Oh, let not my enemies
triumph over me. Let none, verse 3, that wait
on thee be ashamed. David is not just praying for
himself. He's praying for others. He's
praying for us. The Lord is sure to hear a prayer like this. You
know this? This is a prayer of repentance.
This is a prayer of faith, I trust in Thee. This is a prayer of
intercessory prayer, of praying for His brethren. This is a prayer
from the heart. The Lord's going to hear a prayer
in sincerity, from the heart, in truth, in faith in Christ,
in repentance, and for other people. He will hear. You can count on the Lord hearing
and answering your prayer if those things are present. I'm ashamed. Aren't you ashamed
of your little prayers that you pray? You don't pray in sincerity
and you don't pray for others and it's all me and mine. Don't
let me be ashamed. Let none that wait on thee be
ashamed. My brethren, I don't want any of us to be put to shame
when it's all over. I want us to be with the Lord and glory. Let
them be ashamed which transgress without a cause. And all transgression
and all sin is without a cause. You know that? No human being
has any cause to transgress against God. Because God is good. God is good in His tender mercies
over all His works. He's good unto all that call
on Him in truth. Men have no reason to rebel against
God. He feeds us. He clothes us. He
watches over us. Savior of all mankind. Maintains
our lives. They transgress without a cause. And men will be put to shame. It will be a shame. Verse 4,
Show me thy ways, O Lord. Teach me thy paths. We're going
to see him talk about the way. Of course, you know what that
is or who. The way. The center is really
teaching the way. His way. But thy ways are His
Word, His will, His directions, His precepts, His instructions,
His paths. Thy ways, teach me thy paths. All the paths of the Lord, He
said in verse 10, are mercy and truth. Lead me, teach me, show
me. Does that sound like Psalm 143?
Oh, I love that. Hear me. Cause me, deliver me, teach me,
quicken me. So he says, show me thy ways,
O Lord. Teach me thy path. He has to
show us. He has to reveal it. He has to
teach us. And he says it will all be taught
of God. All his people, all his children. And great shall be
the peace thereof. Verse 5. Lead me in thy truth
and teach me. Lead me. Let me walk. John read
that in Psalm 86. Teach me thy way, O Lord. And
Jeanette played it. Teach me thy way, O Lord. I will
walk in thy truth. What is true? The Word is true. There was a time when I walked
according to the course of this world, according to the prince
of the power of the air, held captive by him. And it was a
lie. I was living a lie. Walking according to the lies.
Believing lies. I want to walk in the truth,
don't you? And he keeps mercy and truth, his people, forever. He leads us in his truth in Christ. And all the Word and all the
paths of the Lord lead us where? To Christ. He is the truth. Beware. Teach me. Teach me. Thou art the God, verse
5, We're going to get through this without you being weary,
okay? We're going to run through this
and you're not going to be weary. He's the God of my salvation. Is He
your God? Your Savior? God our Savior?
Salvation is of the Lord. He gave commandment to save me. I know He did. I wouldn't have
come. I wouldn't be here right now. He's the God of my salvation. So David says this, and I love
this. On Thee do I wait all the day. All the day. Verse 21, right
beside it. Let integrity and upright preserve
me, for I wait on Thee. Psalm 27. Look at this. You know these verses. Verse
14. Wait on the Lord. Be of good
courage. He shall strengthen our heart.
Wait, I say, on the Lord. Psalm 37. On the Lord, keep His
way. He'll exalt you to inherit the
land. He marked the perfect man, the end of that man's peace.
Wait, wait, waiting so long. Patience. What are we waiting
for? David one time said that. What
wait I for? Now, oh Lord, what am I waiting
on? So many people in the world are waiting on their ship to
come in. Well, God's people are already in it. Christ is the
ark. And we're waiting on Him. But
there are several things I wrote down. We're waiting. We come in here, and I love standing
at that window and watching you all come here. You made a choice to come here,
but really it wasn't your choice, was it? The Lord overruled your
flesh and circumstances. and His providence to bring you
here. And I love it. It's like I thought
of bees coming to a hive. Here we are. Why? He's going
to give us honey out of the rock. We're waiting on Him. Psalm 65
says, praise waiteth for thee in Zion. We come and we sit and
we're waiting to start worshiping. Good thing. We're waiting to
feed. Cats every day, they're waiting
on me. Waiting on me to feed them. And we come here and we're
waiting. Waiting on the Lord to feed us.
If you're hungry and thirsty, open your mouth. He said, open
it wide. How hungry are you? You'll be filled. We're waiting
for a word from the Lord. We need a Word from the Lord. We need wisdom. We need direction. We need to know His will and
His way. Show me the way that I should
walk. We need wisdom on what to speak, what to say, what not
to say. When not to say it. Wait on a
Word from Him. Job said this, all my days I'm
going to wait for my change. I can't help but thank the Lord's
coming for us when we're all gathered together like this.
People, idiots, try to make up the time change. Well, we're
meeting here, they're not meeting in Australia. Come on now. God's not searching the time.
I'm waiting on my change, aren't you? And we're waiting on the
Lord to return. Listen to Luke 12. Our Lord said
this. I love this and I want to do
this. I want to be what He said we
ought to be doing in Luke 12. He said, let your loins be girded
about. Let your lights be burning. Remember
the ten virgins? Five had oil and five did not.
I want to be wise. Virgin, don't you? Loyal in my
land. Waiting on the call to come. The bridegroom cometh. And you
yourselves, like men, that wait for the Lord. When He will return
from the wedding, when He cometh and knocketh, they may open unto
Him immediately. Because you don't know when.
He said it might come the first watch, the second watch. You
don't know when. Wait, I say. He's coming. Came the first time,
didn't He? And to those that look for him
shall he come again. Wait, wait. I'll tell you, do I wait all
day. Pray. Verse six. Remember, O Lord,
thy tender mercies and our loving kindnesses, they've been ever
of old. Remember to show mercy. Can God forget to show mercy?
Do you like Psalm 126, Kelly? Is it 136? You and I are supposed
to know that. Twenty-six times he says it,
doesn't he? His mercy endureth forever. Psalm
136. And that's not the only psalm
that says that. But His mercy endureth forever. He can't forget. He cannot forget. Can you forget your children?
Not for long. But God never forgets. His loving
kindness has been of old. So many sinners that he's, like
Jacob, that he's shown such mercy to. Look at this. Verse 7, remember
not the sins of my youth. Oh my. See, that's what I'm ashamed
of. Surely we all have something
in our past that we'd like to forget. But we can't, can we? We cannot. As one of the old
writers said this, it's a good thing that your sin is ever before
you, because then you're always calling for mercy. You're always
asking the Lord to forgive you. The gospel is very needful to
you. If you forget your sins, if you
forget your sin, then you don't need Christ. You don't need the
gospel. You don't need forgiveness. You won't be calling. If your
presumption forgets, the Lord's going to remind you. And He's
going to let you repeat the very thing. That very thing. Yes, He will. Remember not the
sins of my youth. And He won't. He doesn't. You
know that? He says this several times, doesn't He, John? There
are sins and there are iniquities. Well, I remember no more. Oh, my. There's nothing on our
record. He says, according to your mercy,
remember thou me for thy goodness sake, O Lord. That faith on the
cross. Isn't that what we ask of our
Lord? Lord, remember me. When you come into
your kingdom, when you come for your people, and you surely will.
I know you will. I know you're coming. Would you
not forget me? Can I come too? Remember me. Remember me. For thy goodness sake. And he
is. Verse 8. Good and upright is the Lord.
Good and upright. I'm working on an article entitled,
Why is the Lord so good to me? Do you ever ask that question?
Why is the Lord so good to me? Why? Well, it's not in you. The answer is not found in you
and me. We're not deserving. The answer
is found in Himself. He's good. The Lord is good. He's good and upright unto all
that call upon Him. He's good. He's upright. That means true and faithful. He'll teach, verse 8, sinners
in the way. Now, here's the way. Christ,
the way. Who's He going to teach? Christ
and Him crucified. Who is He going to show? Christ,
the great Savior of sinners is who it is. That's who Christ
came in the world to save, sinners. So, He won't let us completely
forget our sins, because He shows us Christ's
way. We need Him, need Him. The meek,
verse 9, the meek will be guided in judgment or justice. The meek
will He teach His way. How can God be just and justify
a sinner? You know the answer to that,
don't you? Judgment. That's what that means. Justice.
How can God be just? How can God, who's holy and righteous
and just, by no means clear the guilty? How can He clear me?
I'm guilty. How can He clear you? You're
guilty. Do you know the answer to that? One way. It's not you, anything. It's
not you doing anything. It's Christ's game. He's the
way. He's the way of forgiveness.
The meek are those who realize that whatever He gives me, if
it's good, I don't deserve it. If it's bad, I do deserve it.
But it's not bad. The meek, those who submit, those
who justify God in all He says and does, He'll teach His way. He'll teach them Christ. Verse
10, all the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth, and as such
as keep His covenant. We've done whole messages on
several of these verses. That verse in particular. All
the paths of the Lord are mercy and truth. We're going to look
back on our lives. And if we look now, we'll see
that all the way my Savior led me. That's Deuteronomy 8. All
the way. You're going to see all the way.
From the cradle to your hoary head, He's carried you all the
way. And you're going to see that
everything, pain, suffering, afflictions, trials, what we
thought was evil, is all mercy and truth. True. The only way it could be. To
lead us to Christ, who is the truth. To such as keep His covenant. That's the gospel covenant. Covenant. Brother Kelly and I love Psalm
106. It says, you know, they forget,
they forget, they forget. But it says the Lord remembered
for them His covenant. What we can't seem to remember,
God can't forget. His covenant. And what we can't
forget, our sins, God can't remember. Isn't that wonderful? But the
covenant He made, remember He made with Jacob? Didn't ask him
anything. He told him what all he was going
to do for him. Until the day he brought him home. And this gospel is good news for
sinners, isn't it? For the helpless, hopeless sinners. Sinners, Romans 7 sinners. Because
we're kept by the power of God and the gospel is the power of
God. It's His covenant. Do you want to trade this gospel
for anything? Because it keeps His covenant.
When you keep something, it means you don't want to sell it or
give it away or lose it or anything. It's a prized possession. What
is your most prized possession in this life? Is it not the gospel? Is it not Christ? That's what
He said there in Luke 12 about where your treasure is, that's
where your heart is. This covenant, this gospel and His testimony,
His Word, where would we be without His Word, people? How could we
live? How could we get by without His
Word? And I urge you, you know, this is where you're going to,
you're really going to be strengthened and help, you know. How can we
except a man show it? But I urge you to immerse yourself
in God's Word, to read God's Word, meditate and read it and
read it. Let the Word of Christ dwell
in you richly. It will be like a well spring,
springing up when you need it, in a dry and thirsty land. Show
me the way I should walk therein, where if you're reading God's
Word and you're faced with something, the Word will come to your mind.
He'll give you wisdom. What to say, what to do. We need
that now. Verse 11, For thy name's sake,
O Lord, pardon mine iniquity. For it is great for thy name's
sake. What's his name? Jesus. Savior. Call His name Jesus. Why? He'll
save His people from their sin. That's His name. God our Savior. Jehovah. God our Savior. Lord
Jesus Christ. Messiah. Sinner's substitute. Covenant head. That's His name.
Pardon my iniquity. How great is your sin? Huh? Takes a great Savior, doesn't
it? Takes a great pardon. Hmm. Great pardon. An executive pardon. You know, if you're on death
row, there's only one person on this earth that can pardon
you. The President of the United States. We all were dead in trespassing
and sin. Should have been executed. But
a much higher authority came. Put him on high. Deliver him. Put him down in the pit. Why?
Say it. found a ransom, blood of Christ. Great Savior, a great pardon,
a great sacrifice is what it took to save great sinners. Verse
12, what man is he that feareth the Lord? David brings up fear
constantly that day throughout the Scriptures. David feared
the Lord. Yet he said, I trust the Lord. I have nothing to fear. Well,
we know what He means. Yes, we do. It's just a profound
reverence for and respect for and just you're completely... The disciples, when they finally
saw the Lord's power, like when He walked out on the bow of that
ship and stilled the waves and the wind, hush! Lie down. It says they were exceedingly
afraid. What manner of man? This is no
mere man. This is the God who has everything,
even the fish, and the winds, and the waves, and me, and everything. Not a thought in my head. He
doesn't know. He knows the fish. And they were exceedingly afraid,
but really they had nothing to fear. Nothing to fear. Our pets, you
know, we're such higher beings than they are. The fear of man
is in all animals, isn't it? But if you're a merciful person,
you have a domestic animal, a dog that you love, no matter how
worthless, they really don't need, they need to fear you,
but they have nothing to fear. You understand what I'm saying?
And you can't explain it. I've been trying to preach on
the fear of the Lord for years. I don't know. But what man is he that feareth
the Lord? Him shall he teach in the way
that he shall choose. We're chosen. He's chosen us
to be in the way. But like Moses when he came to
years, and Moses when he stood at that Ernie Bush, and the Lord
spoke to him and revealed Himself to him. It says, then Moses chose,
doesn't it? Refused to be called the son
of Pharaoh's daughter. Choosing rather to suffer affliction
with the people of God. Esteeming the reproach of Christ
greater treasure than all the riches of Egypt. Is that your
choice? It is, isn't it? If offered a choice, that's what
you choose. And salvation is not our choice,
it's God's choice, okay? But once He's chosen you, you
will not choose anything else. You won't. You won't. There's so many times I don't
feel like coming here, but I come here. By the grace of God, I
choose to come. You say, you don't have any choice. Well, you're right. Who's going
to preach? But the fact is, and it's true
with you, Edna, if you don't feel like it, I yawned on the
way over here. Many say, are you sleepy? I said,
well, no. I don't know why I was yawning. I'm tired. We all get tired. But we've got
to come here. We've just got to. Are you glad
you came here? Are you glad you made this choice? Truth be known, you didn't. But
if offered a choice, I'd rather be a doorkeeper in the house
of God than dwell in the tents of the wicked, wouldn't you?
That's what I'd choose. That's what I'd choose, by His choice.
So, look at verse 13. His soul shall dwell at ease, and His seed shall inherit the
earth. His soul, of those that trust the Lord, His seed shall
inherit the earth, Christ's seed. The secret of the Lord is with
them that fear Him. The secret. The secret. The gospel
is a mystery to most. You know that? The grace of God,
the salvation of the Lord is a secret to most. He's hid these
things from the wide and pretty. But He's revealed them unto us
and our children. At least their heads. Aren't
you thankful that the Lord is the seeker of the Lord? It's
with them that fear Him. He'll show them, here's the secret,
here's the answer, the meaning of life, which is covenant, His
kingdom, Christ the King and His gospel. Mine eyes, verse
15, David said, mine eyes are ever toward the Lord. My eyes
are ever toward the Lord. I love Psalm 123. Listen to it.
Don't you love this? He said, Behold, as the eyes
of the servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes
of a maiden under the hand of her mistress. So our eyes wait
upon the Lord our God until He have mercy upon us. Have mercy
upon us, O Lord. Have mercy upon us. Our soul
is exceedingly filled with contempt and scorn. Have mercy, O Lord.
Have mercy. Our eyes are upon the Lord. Don't you love that story of
Jehoshaphat and all the people? They say, we don't know what
to do. Our eyes look to Thee. That's us. That's why we come
here. He'll pluck my feet out of the
net. Now it's no coincidence that
this world is completely governed by, and ruled by, and taken by,
and completely consumed with, and can't live without the net.
And you know what I'm talking about. The internet. Now it's no coincidence that
that's what they call it. And really, this world is absolutely
taken with it. Who's in charge of that? People believe anything and everything
that they see in the net. Well, he'll pluck your feet out
of it. He'll deliver you from the snare of the fowler. And
it's a snare. And our Lord surely, surely alludes
to that in Luke 21 where He says a snare is going to come on all
the earth. prosperity and riches and men with many devices and
knowledge and professing themselves to be wise and they've got all
the answers and they've got all the money and so on and so forth. A snare. The whole world is taken
in a snare. He delivers His people out of
this net. Net. And what delivers? He sends a net. What's that? The Gospel. and gathers his people
out of this Red Sea where the Gospel is. Turn unto me. Now
David is back down again. He had confidence and now he's
begging. Turn unto me. Have mercy upon me. Up there he says, remember your
tender mercies. There's time, David says. Is
his mercies clean, God? Do you ever feel that way? I'm
so sinful. Look how I've acted and the thoughts
I've thought. I've been so worldly and gone
after this and gone after that. My conscience smites me. I call
on God and David said the heavens are brass. Is His mercy clean
gone? Oh, no. What Psalm is it, Kelly? 136. His mercy will do it forever. How many times does He just tell
us that? That's our salvation, isn't it? Aren't you glad He
keeps telling that? Keep telling that. Those that
need mercy endure it forever. Sinners, if you're a sinner,
if you remember your sins and can't forget them, He keeps showing
you His covenant. Showing His mercy. Isn't that
good? He's good. Oh, turn unto Me. Have mercy
on me. I'm desolate. I'm afflicted. Have you ever
been there? Sure you have. Desolate? Alone? No, you're not alone. No, you're
not. You remember old brother Hubert
Davis? Dad and I went to see that man
in the nursing home in Farmville. Maybe you hadn't heard this,
somebody. But this old preacher, I used to preach with him in
North Carolina. And he, dear man, I loved him. We roomed together. And he was 20 or 30 years older
than me. And anyway, he had severe Parkinson's
disease. He had a son who was 40 or 50
years old who was an invalid. And they had taken care of that
son all their lives. And now he himself was becoming
a burden to be taken care of by his wife. So he committed
himself to a nursing home. He voluntarily went and checked
himself in a nursing home. And he was all bent over like
this. He couldn't straighten up like
that woman could not raise herself up. That's the way he was. Well,
my dad and I went to see him in Farmville, Virginia, in that
nursing home. We walked in, found his room,
and the door was open, and he had his back to us sitting in
a wheelchair. I said, Brother Hubert, are you
alone? He said, no, brother, the Lord's with me. And he meant
it. And he was. When you go through
fiery trials, He said, I'll be with you. And Buddy, you know,
we went there to cheer him up. We walked out of there cheered
up. He was so glad to see us. He died shortly after that. He didn't die. Went to be with
the Lord. He's up right now. Doing youth
on his brow now. He's sure not alone now. A multitude
of heavenly hosts. Oh, the troubles, verse 17, of
my heart are enlarged. They just keep coming. Oh, bring
thou me out of my distresses. We do get in stress, don't we?
Look upon my affliction, my pain. Affliction. We all have afflictions. My pain, we suffer pain, physical,
mental, emotional, spiritual. Forgive all my sins. Consider
mine enemies. There's so many. They hate me
with cruel hatred. Our adversary the devil is like
a roaring lion. We don't feel his full wrath
because the Lord won't let him. And that's a good thing. He's
cruel. Men are cruel, aren't they? People
are cruel. Oh, keep my soul, verse 20, keep
my soul, keep my soul. Don't cast me away. What did
the Lord say? He that keepeth Israel shall
never slumber or sleep. The Lord preserveth thee from
all evil. He'll keep you. He'll keep you.
He'll not perish. Keep my soul, deliver me. He's
the Deliverer. That's His name. Let me not be
ashamed. Let me be put to shame. Don't
let me bring shame on my Lord. For I put my trust in Thee. He keeps saying that. And He
ends His theme. I say, Lord, I trust You. Nobody
who's ever trusted the Lord has been desolate. No one who's ever
trusted the Lord has been disappointed. Not one single sinner that's
really put their trust in the Lord has been cast away as perished. Not one. You say, but you watch. They that trust in the Lord will
be saved. Let integrity and uprightness
preserve me. He said in verse 8, good and
upright is the Lord. His integrity and His uprightness
is what's going to preserve you. You know that? His faithfulness
and His truthfulness preserve me. And He does put in God's
people. integrity and uprightness, that
they walk in that way. I wait on thee. I'm just going
to wait. That's all I can do. Call, but
I'm just waiting. Redeem Israel, O God, out of
all his troubles. You know what? He said he would. Listen to this, and I'll close.
I'll just quote this for you. Lord, hear my voice. Out of the
depths I've cried unto thee. Lord, if you'd mark iniquity,
who should stand? But there's forgiveness with
thee. Thou mayest be feared. I wait for the Lord. That my
soul doth wait. And in His Word do I hope. My
soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the
morning. I have to say, more than they that are watching for
the sun to come up. You ever done that? How many
times? Let Israel hope in the Lord. With the Lord is mercy. Plenteous. redemption, and he
shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities. It's a time of
Jacob's trouble, the Lord said, but he shall be delivered and
all of it. Trust the Lord, okay? Call upon
Him. Stand with Him.
