Philippians chapter 1. Turn over
there. Philippians chapter 1. The title
of this message, it may sound clever or whatever to you. I
hope not. It's a good word though. Faith's
Finale. That's the title. That's the
subject. The word finale simply means the final performance. And that's what he says here
in verse 6. He that hath begun a good work
in you will perform it until the day of Christ Jesus. But
some of you have been to concerts and, you know, performances,
musical performances. That's where the word comes from.
It's the concluding and closing movement. This is what it means.
the concluding and closing movement of musical composition or performance. It's the conclusions. It's often
called the grand finality. You ever go to a concert and
a performance and it builds up and it builds up, doesn't it?
And if you've enjoyed it, you don't want it to end. If you
enjoy what we're doing here, And often we, the Lord blesses
us to meet together and to really enter into worship. And you don't
want to leave. You stand around, you talk about
it. Well, you go to a concert and it's just wonderful. You
don't want it to end. So they give one last encore,
the grand finality. And when it's over, you just,
everybody stands and what do you do? You give a standing ovation. So that's what I'm going to try
to talk about. God's help, and you know what,
I need your help. This is no fun if God's not with
me, and it's no fun if you're not. It's a saver of life to life.
I want you, when this is over, I want you to do everything but
stand up and shout. Faith's binary. What God hath
done for us. That's why we're here. We're
here because what God has done for us. And we're so glad, we're
so thankful, we're so grateful, we're so undeserving. There's
not one person in here, starting with me, that deserves to be
here to hear this. When Jacob said this, he said,
I'm not worthy of the least of Thy mercies, of all Thy mercies
and all the truth You've shown me. I'm not worthy. God found
this old boy who was worthless and wrestled with him, wrestled
him down, changed his name, changed his life, gave him everything,
twelve sons and grandsons and all that. Gave him everything
he had and watched over him and made a covenant, made a promise
to him and said, Jacob, this is what I'm going to do for you
all your life. What Jacob did. Sinned. But God loved them. Jacob have I loved. Oh, happy
is he that the God of Jacob. I am the God of Jacob, he said.
Therefore, you sons of Jacob are not consumed. I change not.
My covenant. I tell you, I'm not worthy to
preach this, and you're not worthy to hear it. I hope we do. And I hope we want to shout when
it's all over with. Paul said to the saints, chapter
1, verse 1. This is to the saints. Who are
saints? They're sanctified ones. They've
been set apart. How? By God. Paul said, I'm bound to give
thanks to God for you, brethren, beloved of the Lord, because
God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation, to save. We're not worth saving, brother.
But God has chosen you. To save you. How? Through sanctification
of the Spirit. Almighty love. Go after that
woman. Well, she's a black sheep. They all are. Go after her. Through sanctification of the
Spirit and belief of the truth. People don't believe the truth.
They turn away their ears from the truth. They don't want to
hear the truth. Now more than ever, people don't want to hear
the truth. Do you? Why? Because you're a son of Jacob. And you're not worthy, but God,
He says, go into a house and find a house that's worthy. Who's
worthy? Those that say, I'm not worthy.
And then when they hear the news, you think, I'm so unworthy to
hear this. But they're so glad. To the saints, chosen you through
sanctification of spirit, belief of the truth, Whereunto he called
you by our gospel. This is the power of God. To the obtaining of the glory.
John, you're waiting on me to say it. To the obtaining of the
glory. To be with Christ. That's the
end of this thing. It's going to be joy unspeakable
full of glory. I'm trying to tell you about
something we haven't seen yet. Verse 3, and he goes on, grace
and peace. It's all grace. You know that? It's all grace. Peace. God is
angry. He's not angry with us. He said,
I thank God on every remembrance of you. I thank God for you.
And in every prayer of mine for you all, making requests with
joy. Here's my request that we have
fellowship in the Gospel like we've had it from the first day
until now. He said, I'm confident of this. I'm just confident.
of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you." What is this work he's talking
about? It's the work of faith. It's faith. It's God's work. Faith is God's work. Faith is
not a work of man. Faith is not our will. It's according to His will. Faith
is not our decision. It was completely and totally
His decision before the world began. Are you with me? It's
not our work. It's His work. He hath begun
a good work in you. This work of faith is the best
thing that could possibly happen to you. It's being born again.
And this faith will culminate into life everlasting. And the Scripture says the day
of one's death is better than the day of his birth. And so
in that sense, if you're born again, it's better to never have
been born if you're not born again. But if you're born again,
who did it? You're born of God. Begotten
of God through the Word of Truth, through the Gospel. It's His
Word. It's His work. And He says, I'm confident, and
brothers and sisters, if God does the work, it's evident. It's evident. And
that person upon whom and in whom God does this work, they'll
give Him all the glory, every bit of it. There won't be any
doubt. What's done in the heart will
come out of the mouth, and God will get all the glory. Like
David. What was David saying? David said, no, this is all God's
work. Yes, I'm willing. Yes, they're
willing. Yes, we've given, as we should. But we didn't do anything. God did it all. So he says here,
I'm confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good
work in you. It's the work of faith. Who's
the author of faith? Our God is. Christ. He's called
the author. And what? Finisher. That he that hath begun a good
work in you will perform it until Christ comes. He'll finish it. He'll perfect it. A good work.
Faith, brothers and sisters. I remember my dad one time announced
he was going to preach on faith. And I was a young believer. Just
to be honest with you, I thought, well, that's good. Faith, okay. We don't understand. Faith is just another word for
life. Okay? Faith is another word for
life, eternal life. Faith is who you believe. Faith
is Christ in you. Faith in you is Christ in you. Now by the faith, hope, and love,
the greatest of these are love. It's not just the truth. I love
the truth. I love the Christ. Faith is a powerful, glorious,
miraculous work of God. It's not an act of the human
will, because man could take some of the credit, wouldn't
he? The soul winner would take credit for convincing them to
believe, and the so-called believer accepting that. Letting God be
God and making His decision for Jesus. This is according to the
first Ephesians 1.19 says, You who believe, believe according
to the working of His mighty power. And you know it so, there
was a day you didn't believe any of this. You didn't have
any care for any of this, did you? Did you? There was a day when
you didn't have any thoughts of God. You didn't care for God.
Like Simon and Peter, like every one of them. Jacob, look out,
chose you. The gospel begins with God choosing
you. And it's good news. It's a work
of God. It's a miraculous work. Faith
is another word for life. Faith is another word for giving
a new heart. With a heart man believeth unto
salvation. Faith is another word for a new
mind, a transformation of your mind. Before God gives you faith,
you don't have your mind. It's foolish and fickle and finite
and selfish and of the world. Faith's a work of God. A new
mind, a new heart, a new will. I will not go to church. I will
not worship God. I will not sing these songs.
I will sing the songs of the world. I will sing the songs
of the drunkard. I will follow the world. I will
do this. But God says, here's what I will do to you. I will
make you willing. And you will come. And you know
what you'll say? Thank God. Faith, you see, is just another
word for life. It's an operation of God, which
believe according to the working of His mighty power, the operation
of God, a new heart, a new mind, a new will. That's what Paul
said in Ephesians to the saints, the chosen elect of God. He went on to say it's according
to the working of His mighty power. He said, oh, by grace
are you saved. What? Through faith. What does it go on to say? That's
not of yourselves. It's a gift of God. Not of works,
lest any man should boast. For we are what? His workmanship. This work of faith is life begun
by the Word of His power, by what I'm doing, what the world
calls foolishness. Faith is a way of life. It's a new life. New
heart, new mind, new thoughts, new affections. Faith is walk,
talk. We walk by faith. We talk our
conversation. We're going to see this in a
moment. Faith is new affections, new ways. No longer walk according
to the course of this world. That's what he said, Ephesians
2, didn't he, John? Don't walk anymore according
to the course of this world. You walk with God. You walk with
God's people. Turn with me to Hebrews 11. This
is the chapter concerning faith. And I never, you know, I've preached
more from Hebrews 11 than any place in the Bible. Every verse,
every person, time and time again, dozens of times, we've looked
at it. Why? Because it begins with faith
that this is the work of God. and the miraculous work He does
in these people, people like us, and the miraculous work He
does through them. These are things that men, it's
impossible with men to do. They're not with God. It's not only possible, it's
certain. Hebrews 11, look at verse 24. I love this. Bidney loves this.
It says, oh my, I want to talk about Moses' parents, giving
up their child, verse 23, Moses' parents putting their baby boy
in a basket and throwing him in the river, putting him in
an ark in the river. Oh, did they believe God? Where
was their hope? Did they love that child? Do
you love your children? Well, you know what you'll do
if you believe God? Do you know what you'll do if you believe
God? You'll cast all your care upon the Lord. You'll say, Lord,
you gave me this child. Here, do with him or her as you
will. Right? And then when Moses grew up,
did God honor that prayer? And Moses got to be 40-some years
old. After he'd lived his life in
Egypt, after he thought, this is what I want, Egypt. All the
things of Egypt, all the finery of Egypt, the people of Egypt
with all its debauchery and wickedness and all. Moses was right in the
middle of that. He had it all. Now here's what
happened. But God said, Moses, you're mine. Look at verse 24. So by faith,
God gave him faith. He didn't decide to do this. When he had come to years and
fullness of time, he refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's
daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people
of God than those Egyptians. And to enjoy the pleasures of
sin, he knew it was just for a season. Finally, he knows,
his mind's right in it. Now his heart, he's got a new
heart. Esteeming, verse 26, the reproach of Christ for Christ's
greater riches and all the treasures of Egypt. And he had respect
and the recompense of the reward. Oh my, what he was looking for.
Faith's finality. By faith he forsook Egypt. And so does everybody that really
believes God. Yeah, they do. Faith's a miracle. To get a man, a woman, to refuse
to be somebody and something and have things and all the pleasures
of this world and realize it's all temporary and it's not worth
living for And I'd rather walk with the people of God through
the wilderness and worship God and have very little, have food
and raiment, be content. And I'm looking for a city whose
builder and maker is God. And I'm not going back. That's of God. And you know what?
Every person that God does this work to, the same thing. They did all. It says they all
did. They all died, in fact. And they all said the same thing.
They saw the promises. They embraced the promises. And
they confessed they were strangers and pilgrims on this earth. And
if they'd had opportunity to go back, they wouldn't have done
it. Looking for. Looking unto Jesus. They've met
the Lord Jesus Christ. And He has captivated them. It's
a marriage. It's a marriage. Go with me to, we'll go back
to Philippians. Go back to Philippians chapter
2. He said here, and you know these verses, look at verse 13. You have it? Philippians 2, 13.
It is God which worketh in you, both to will and to do of His
good pleasure. You see that? That's God's will. So faith is God's working. It's
a miracle. I hope and pray, and Paul prayed
for the people in Ephesians and Philippians, that faith would
be strengthened, that the Lord would give faith where there
is none. It's equally as clear where there is no faith. It's sad. Here's faith's conversation.
Okay? Conversation. When we think of
conversation, You think of talk, don't you? Well, that's what
faith is. Faith is more than that, though. It's your whole being. It's your
whole way. It's your turn, the way you turn. Like we said, it's
the heart. Out of the abundance of the heart,
what? The mouth speaketh. You speak
of those things that you love, or people. Don't you? Look at Philippians 1. Look at verse 27. He says, do
you have it? Philippians 1, 27. Let your conversation be as becometh
the Gospel of God. See that? Let your conversation
be as becometh. And chapter 3. Look at Philippians
chapter 3. Verse 20, you have it? And he said, he just said, some
people's God is their belly. And he said, I say that weeping.
They mind earthly things. But verse 20, but our conversation
is in heaven, from which we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus
Christ, who shall change our vile bodies to be fashioned like
unto His glorious body. This is the grand finale, a complete
change. Faith's conversation, as said,
is more than just talk, although it is. It's the walk. It's what you speak of or who
you think of, go after, serve, live for. Conversation is your
whole being. Faith is like marriage, okay? When you become married, you're
no longer your own. Two become one. If you're really
married, you love that person, they love you. Do you think about
that person? Do you live with that person?
Do you live for that person? Do you walk with? Do you talk
with? When you're gone from, when you're away from, you're
separated from that, do you think on that person? Do you call them? That's marriage. That's marriage. And faith is a marriage to Christ. You're not your own. You're married
to another. You're bought with a price. Hosea
paid the price for Gomer, didn't he? And our Lord Jesus Christ
paid the price for his bride, his own life, and redemption's
price, his precious blood. You're not your own. Just as
he thinks on us, we think on him. It's a conversation. Listen
to Paul in Philippians 3. You don't have to go anywhere,
but Philippians. Listen to what Paul said. He
said, For me to live is Christ. He said, To die is gain. What's
that mean, Paul? I go to be with the Lord, whom
I love. Chapter 1 is what I'm reading. Verse 22, he says, If
I live in the flesh, this is the fruit of my labor. He was
in prison. He suffered. And what I shall choose, whatnot,
but I'm in a strait between the two. I have a desire to depart
and be with Christ, which is far better. If you love somebody, you want
to be with them, don't you? You can't stand to be away from
them. That's a fact. Oh, man. Like a marriage. And over in
chapter 3, look at Philippians 3, Paul said this. And remember, Paul didn't believe
Christ, what happened to him? Oh, it was a working of God's
mighty power. He believed now. Now, how do
you know? Because Paul said in chapter 3, verse 7, that the
things that were gained to me, they're lost. All my past life, he said, was
just a waste of time. Doubtless, no doubt, I count
all things, verse 8, but lost for the excellency of the knowledge
of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss
of all things. But I count it but garbage that
I may win Christ. Here's the real thing. I want to be found in Him. Oh,
verse 10, I want to know Him. The power of His resurrection.
The fellowship of His suffering. I want to be made conformable
unto His death. Do you remember these three things?
Go to Job chapter 14. Job. Go over there. You'll love
this. Do you remember my pastor saying
this? I quoted it to you. I think many
of you jotted it down. He said three things I want more
than anything else. And I'll never forget when I
first heard it, and I jotted it down. I was very, very young,
in my twenties. I jotted it down in my Bible
and I've never forgotten it. He said, three things I want
and pray for and desire wholeheartedly from my Lord. He said, I want
total commitment to my Lord Jesus Christ. I want to follow Him.
I want to be done with me and mine and this world and all.
Total commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ. He said, I want
total communion with the Lord. I want to commune with the Lord. That's what Paul meant when he
said, I want to know Him. And he said, I want total conformity.
I want to be just like Him. David said, I will behold thy
face in righteousness. And I'm not going to be satisfied.
Till I awake with His likeness. And this is faith's finale. Paul
said, He's going to change our vile bodies like unto His glorious
body. Do you consider your body to
be a vile thing? Do you consider your thing to
be vile? Do you consider this world you live in a vile place?
Do you? Are you vexed with all this? Is this body like a prison
to you? That's what Brother John Chapman,
if you want to hear a good message, if you don't hear this one, hear
Brother John on Philippians 3, 8. God is a prison to God's people.
Held captive by this sin and all this. We want out. Faith's
finale is to be liberated. The glorious liberty of the sons
of God to be made just like Jesus Christ. Be done with all this. Job 14 says, Man is born of woman
a few days and full of trouble. Is this world a world of trouble
to you? This is the oldest book in the
Bible and Job was one of God's men. Job went through everything
we go through all at once. You remember? All these things
God sent. Why? to bring about this great work
in Job. He went through everything we
will go through. Loss of all his possessions,
loss of his family, loss of his health. What did Job say after all that
God did? That the Lord gave this to him.
The Lord gave it all to him. And the Lord took it away. He
rejoiced in the Lord. He did not rejoice in losing
his possession. He did not rejoice in losing
his children. He did not rejoice in losing
his health. But he rejoiced in the Lord, knowing the Lord did
it. And since God did it, it must be good. Blessed be the
name of the Lord. Do you know the Lord gave you
everything you have and everything you did? Has the Lord taken anything
from you? Do you know the Lord did it in
you? Do you bless His holy name? Do
you say, He gave it to me, I didn't deserve it, and He took it away?
Bless His holy name. Do you say that? And you have
the faith of Job. Look at Job. He said, My days,
verse 5, are determined. The number of my months are with
the Lord. My bounds are set. I can't pass. Do you believe
that? Do you believe that? Most people
say, that's fatalism. No, that's just Job 14.5. It's
God's Word. It's the Lord is what it is.
Life is the Lord. Your life is in the hands of
the Lord. Do you like that? You don't want to know what's
going to happen tomorrow. You don't. Because if it's something
bad, you won't sleep tonight. You can't exist. You couldn't
exist knowing what was in the future. But you know who holds
the future. And that's your home, your peace.
You go to bed. That's rejoicing in the Lord. Look down at verse Verse 12, man lies down and rises
not. He dies. Verse 14, if a man dies,
shall he live again? But it says, all the days of
my appointed time will I wait. What are you waiting on, Joe? My change. Total commitment, total communion,
and total conformity. He said, I want to be like Christ.
I'm so tired of sin. I'm so tired of myself. He had
three friends. They turned against him. He said, I want out. I want out
of here. I want it out of me. I'm going
to wait for my change to come. Are you looking forward to the
change? This is faith's work. This is God's work. This is faith's
conversation. This is what God does in all
of His people. Do you want to be changed? Well, then you already have been.
But you just wait. In verse 15, Job says, Thou shalt
call, and I will answer thee. I'll answer. You call and I'll
call. Thou wilt have a desire to the work of thy hand. Do you?
Do you have a desire to the work of His hand? You know what David
said? I will triumph through the work
of thy hands. This is your work. Paul said,
I'm confident He that hath begun a good work in you, He'll finish
it. He'll perform it. until it's
perfect, complete. He went on to say, oh, my transgressions
are sealed up in a bag. Does that interest you? Why, Joe? How can you believe
all this? Because over in chapter 19, here's
the root of the matter. He said to his friends, you ought
to be comforting me. Here's the root of the matter.
He said, I know my Redeemer liveth. And He's coming down here. He's
called me. He's done a good work in me.
And He's coming back for me. When He calls, I'll call. There
He is. Like Joshua gave command to go
get Rahab. He sent the men in there to tell
her the good news. Joshua is going to save you.
He sent us to tell you. Tell you who He is. Who God is.
And you're going to hear the trumpet sound until it comes.
And it was music to her ears every day. She never got tired
of it. Somebody may have said, I'm tired of that. No, Rahab
said, sound it louder. And then what happened? One day it happened exactly like
God said, like Joshua said, go get that woman I've chosen. And
they brought her out. Where is she? I said it right. Where is she? Because the Scripture
says she's right there now with Joshua. Right now. Who? Jesus Christ. Who? Rahab. Boy, was she ever thankful that
those men came to her. She was so grateful. She esteemed
them so highly. And she lived the rest of her
time, her conversation, her life from then on was about Joshua. and going to be with Joshua.
I want out of this Jericho. Come get me. And so they sounded
the trumpet. We're coming. Come quickly. That's face conversation. Here's
face finale. Go back to Philippians with me. Go back to Philippians. I'm going
to finalize this, okay? Look at Philippians 4. Look at
it with me. Chapter 3 begins this way. Finally, my brethren, finally. Rejoice in the Lord. Maybe somebody's
thinking, I wish you'd be done with this. Maybe so, you know,
it's about as good as I can do. Virgie, one time said, she was
hoping to go and be with the Lord because she said, I don't
want to listen to any more bad preaching. Finally, I get to
hear not just the half of the story, but the whole story. Finally,
I get to rejoice like I want to rejoice. Finally, I get to
hear every word without any distraction. Finally, I get to sing with all
my heart, with all my mind, with all my soul, with all my strength.
Finally, I realize what God has really done for me. Finally,
I'll be with people that love Him. Finally, I'll be out of
this world. Finally! Would you finalize this for me,
Lord? When it says, when Peter says, what manner of person we
ought to be in all holy conversation in Godliness, looking for the
coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Hasting His coming. What does
that mean? Come quickly, lest I go back to the pit. You can. Many have done it. Better
preachers than me have. Come quickly. That's what they
all pray. Even so, come quickly. Hasten. That's what we do when we think
about and talk about the coming of our Lord. When we think about
and talk about other things, He's far away. We're not giving
Him a thought. But when we think about and talk
about and encourage each other and exhort one another so much
more as we see the day approaching, you know what it makes you think?
Surely He's coming quickly. And what do we say? Oh, I hope
He does. Faith's finale. He says, finally,
brethren, rejoice in the Lord, brothers and sisters. Jesus Christ
reigns over this world. He reigns and rules over you,
your children, everything about you, down to every hair on your
head. Are you grateful? Rejoice. And
again, Paul says, I say rejoice. Chapter 4. Look at verse 4. Rejoice
in the Lord always. Always. Always. Remember Luke
21? And the Lord started talking
to His disciples that this is all going to happen to you. Everything
that happened to Job is going to happen to you. And the world
is going to fall apart. Wars and rumors of war. Nations
against nations. Family against family. Siding
up against each other for Christ's sake. He says rejoice always
in everything. Rejoice. And He said, when you
see all these things happen, look up! Lift up your head. Your redemption draws nigh. It's
almost over, Rahab. You hear me? And again I say, rejoice. In
what? There's not much here to rejoice
over. Most everything, everyone will
break your heart. He won't. He can't. He's faithful. To the end. And the end is not the end. That's
what He said. It's just the beginning. Rejoice,
and again I say, rejoice in the Lord. Verse 6, Be careful. Don't be
full of care for anything. Nothing. Don't be anxious with
anxious care about anything, anyone for that matter. And everything
by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, be sure to be thankful. Peace of God. Verse 7, a rule
that passes understanding, mere mortal understanding. Well, keep
your hearts and minds, keep them on things above. Finally, brethren,
verse 8. Here it is. Finally. Whatever's
true. There's just nothing true out
there, is there? Nothing and nobody. True. I'll tell you who is true. God
is true. Christ is true. This book is
true. What I'm telling you is the truth.
True. Whatever is honest. That means
venerable. It means honest. It means not
just honest, telling the truth. It means mighty. It means powerful. Our God has all power, might,
and honor. Honor. Whatever is worthy of
honor. There's nothing honorable in this world. There's nothing
and no one honorable. Men say, upon my honor. You don't
have any. God does. This is all upon His
honor. That's what that meant. Whatsoever
things are just. Is there any justice in this
world? I'll tell you who He is. The Judge of the earth does right.
He's just. Stay with me. Come on. Finally,
brethren. This is the finale. Whatever things are pure. Everything
is so filthy and vile. Whatever things are lovely. What's
lovely? I'll tell you. He's altogether
lovely. Everything is a good report.
Give me some good news. We quit listening to the news.
Why? Because it's all bad. Preacher, you just said. I know,
but I don't have to listen to know that. I can read Luke 21
and tell you about the bad news. I can tell you what's going to
happen tomorrow. It's not good concerning this world. But I'll
tell you what God said about it. He said He's doing it. And
it's for our good, not for the good of the world. It's a good
report. In Hebrews 11, they all obtained
the good report. Who hath believed our report,
Isaiah said? To whom is the arm of the Lord
revealed? Rejoice in the Lord. Here's the good report. Thy God
reigneth. And He's coming back for you. Is He? Do you love this? Does this sound
good to you? Good report. Here's a good report,
Teresa. The world's ending. And not ours. It's about to begin. Does that sound good to you? If there be virtue. Virtue went out from our Lord.
Any praise, anything praiseworthy, anybody deserving of any praise,
any thanksgiving, any honor, any human being, anywhere deserves
any praise for anything. No. It's all from God. Think
on these things. I remembered this. I committed
this to memory, this verse, years ago, because here's an easy way
to remember it. Whatever is true and honest is
just pure loving. And it's good news, good report,
and virtue, and it deserves my praise. It's just pure lovely. What's about to happen, it's
just pure lovely. And here's what I'm going to
try to, how I'm going to close it. Peter said this, listen to
me. Just listen as I read it to you,
and I'll be done. Okay. Peter said this, he said,
elect through sanctification of the Spirit. Blessed be the
God and Father according to His mercy, begottenness, a new birth,
to a lively living hope by the resurrection of Christ, to an
inheritance incorruptible, nobody can take away, undefiled, fadeth
not away, reserved in heaven for you who are kept by the power
of God, by the gospel, by the Spirit of God. under salvation, ready to be
revealed. It's just ready to be revealed
in the last time. And though you greatly rejoice
in these things, but for a season you're in manifold temptation
and heaviness, that the trial of your faith is more precious
than gold. Don't be tried with fire. It's
going to be found under praise and honor and glory. Here's faith
found out. When it's all said and done, He says, whom having not seen
you love, in whom, though now you see him not, you believe
