Oh, could I seek the matchless
worth? Oh, could I found the glorious
flowers which in my Savior shine? I'd soar and touch the heavenly
strings and fly with Gabriel While he sings in notes almost
divine In notes almost divine I'd sing the precious blood he
spilled My ransom from the dreadful gift Of sin and wrath divine
I sing His glorious righteousness In which a perfect heavenly dress
My soul shall ever shine My soul shall ever shine Let's sing the characters he
bears And all the forms of love he wears Exalted on his throne
In lofty songs of sweetest praise I would to everlasting days Make
all His glories known, make all His glories known. Well, the delightful day will
come When my dear Lord will bring me home And I shall see His face
And with my Savior Brother, friend, a plethorne that ye shall spend,
Triumphant in His grace, triumphant in His grace. That's so good. Let's open our Bibles this morning
to the book of 2 Timothy. 2 Timothy chapter 3. The title of this message is,
The Last Days. 2 Timothy, the third chapter, Paul said to young Timothy, This know also that in the last
days perilous times shall come. Now, according to the Scriptures,
we are in the last days. We have been in the last days
since our Lord walked on this earth. all the apostles referred to
the time that our Lord came into the world
to the end, or He would return as the last days. Scripture seems
to divide the history of this creation into three parts, from
Adam to Moses, from Adam to Moses, about two thousand years. from
Moses to Christ about 2,000 years. And then from Christ to this
present day, we're approaching the year 2,000. And these are
referred to as the last days. That's just the way it's referred
to in Scripture, the last days. And many men whom I know and
whom I have great confidence that they know God and know the
Word, know the Gospel. Many of them, and I might say
most of them, believe that we're in the last days of the last
days, that we're approaching the return
of our Master. He will return, we believe, soon. In 1994, 1993 actually a man whom I know and
a well-known man well-known preacher a man who's been a great blessing
to many people. His name is Dr. Harold Camping. His organization over which the
people which he's the founder and and the leader owns 39 radio
stations over this country and two television stations in California
and New Jersey. He's well known. He's in his
early 80s. And he wrote a book entitled
1994. And he felt that God gave him
some insight on the time when Christ would
return. He set the date. This is a great
mistake, and I'm telling you this to enforce that fact that
it is a great mistake to set a time for the Lord to come. Scripture says no man knoweth
the day nor the hour when the Son of Man shall come, not even
the angels in heaven. And someone mentioned this to
Dr. Camping out at the meeting, and he said, His reply was, I
heard him say it myself, I was there. His reply was, well, it
doesn't say nobody knows the year. It says nobody knows the
day or the hour. We'll use anything to get around
certain things. Well, he wrote this large book,
and he was interviewed by Larry King Live. I watched that program
when he was interviewed. He gave a good account of himself.
Sovereign grace of God leads the gospel. I've talked to him
about these things. And I was at this conference
in 1994, the last conference in August before Christ was supposed
to return on September the 6th, 1994. This was the first part
of August. The CNN was there, the cameras
and reporters to interview, and about 500 people came from all
over the country. And I was invited by some of
the organization to bring the evening message, eight o'clock
every evening, Monday through Friday. And I got acquainted
with many of his close friends and leaders and people who read
his book and believed it. But they'd come to me after every
service and they said, well, brother man, what do you think
about this? What do you think about Dr. Canfield's book? I
said, I hope he's right. With all my heart, I hope he's
right. Wouldn't it be wonderful if our
Lord would come this afternoon? Wouldn't it be? Can you think
of anything more exciting? Can you think of anything more
blessed? Can you think of anything more wonderful than if He'd come
right now? And that seemed satisfying. That's
all I had to say. I didn't say I believed He was
right. I said, I hope He's right. Well, I met a lot of people. They received my tapes, and they
put me on their television station in Oakland, California. I've
been on that station now over four years, since that conference.
And they liked my preaching. We became friends. But September
the 6th came and passed, and I received letters from many
of these dear people. One lady sold her home. A couple
of people quit their jobs. And the disappointment was just
heartbreaking that they had confidence in the word of their leader.
They had confidence in his leadership because he is an exceptional
man. But our Lord didn't come on the
date he set. Our Lord's coming on the date
his father set. And we're foolish to set dates
and times. But I believe that can't keep
us from believing. You know, John closed the book
of Revelation with, Even so, come, Lord Jesus. Please come. Please come. And I think it's
all right for us to believe that we're in the last days of the
last days. And I do believe that. And I
rejoice when he comes. But I do know this. When my bounds
are set, My days are determined by God. And in a few short years, some
of us, he's coming for us. That won't be long. He's coming
for us. But I pray and hope that very
soon he'll come for all of us. And we'll be caught up together
with those who have preceded us in death to forever be with
the Lord. But let's look at this chapter
when Paul writes to the young preacher Timothy. and tells him
something about these last days. And I have an outline, if you'd
like to jot it down. It's four parts. I divide this
chapter into four parts. The first three or four verses
talks about the perilous times. The perilous times. And then
secondly, in the next verses five through nine, he talks about
these perilous times being religious times. religious times. And then in verses 10 through
14, he talks about these being heart-searching times. Time for
me to do some heart-searching, and you too. And then in closing
the chapter, Paul calls attention to our foundation in all of this. Our foundation. Alright, the
perilous times. In verse 1, This know also that
in the last days perilous times shall come. Perilous times? Well, the economy's good. Most
everybody's working. Our young men are not at war.
My son doesn't have to go to war. Your sons, you young men
here, are not subject to a draft of military service. Most of
us have pretty good health. We've got good doctors, we've
got most of us a comfortable living. How can you call these
days perilous times? Well, they're perilous times
spiritually. Godliness, honesty, integrity,
truth, family values. Family values. morality, decency. Truth and wholesome conversation
and authority are the thing in the past in this country. You
know that, and I know that. The things that are accepted,
the so-called lifestyles and conversation and attitude and
spirit in this country, Things which are accepted are evil and
corrupt. Our values are gone. Principles
are gone. The school system is gone. Look
at what he says. Here's what he describes these
perilous times. Men shall be lovers of their
own selves. This is put first because all
error starts here. All vices start here. It flows
from self-love. He who puts himself first does
not love God first, nor his neighbor first. He loves himself first.
He does what he pleases to do, regardless of the outcome or
the consequences. Lovers of themselves. Men shall
be covetous. Love of money, possessions, materialism,
that's the root of all evil. Men and women will compromise
all values. for possessions, military, material
possessions, just compromise all principle to get what they
want materially. Boasters. I thank God I'm better
than others. Let not the wise man glory in
his wisdom, or the rich man glory in his riches, or the strong
man glory in his strength. But that men are boasters today.
People are boasters and braggarts. and then pride. Nothing is more
offensive to God than pride. When wise man Solomon mentioned
seven things that are abomination to God, the first thing he mentioned
was pride, a proud look. Pride goes before destruction,
a haughty spirit before the fall. It exalts the flesh. These are the perilous times,
Paul says. This is perilous. Not to be without
a job, that's not a perilous time to be, you know, even to
be at war. But to be separated from God,
to be godless, ungodly, that's perilous. And our nation is ungodly. Blasphemy. What is blasphemy?
A definition I found one time, any thought or word concerning
God, which renders to him any less than full glory, is blasphemy. Any thought or word that I entertain
or use that's any less than giving him all the glory is blasphemy."
We must be careful about how we use the name of our Lord. And the name of the Lord is used—I
read And I watched football games, and I watched a coach the other
day, and he was taking God's name in vain, over and over and
over again. I'm on the sidelines, blasting
it. It's just the name of God. The
language in the movies, they can't make a movie now that people
will go to unless there's filthy talk and blasphemy. Somebody
said one day, you put a G rating on a movie, it's a flop. That's just been in the last
30 or 40 years. It wasn't so when we were going
to see Hopalong Cassidy, was it? But it's filthy now. If you want to fill your living
room or your den with filth, turn on your television. It just
flows out. Perilous times. The average program
you're embarrassed to watch with your young daughter or son. Perilous
times. Blasphemy. Disobedient to parents. The whole attitude today in the
school, in the home, on the job, is a hatred for authority. Hatred for authority. My rights
is the issue. Not what is right, but my rights. That's the issue. Resentment. People resent. Even children
resent. rebuke, any advice, any counsel,
they resent it. People resent it. Even a parent
has to figure out a way to instruct his child or correct his child
so not to hurt the child's feelings. If I can't scold him, he'll get
mad at me. If I can't scold her, she'll
get mad at me and pout. So I've got to figure a way to
get around it so that I won't offend Disobedient to parents,
children killing their parents, taking guns and killing their
parents. Perilous times. Listen, unthankful, unthankful
to God, unthankful to anybody else. There's one reason for ingratitude
and that's people think they're deserving and worthy. People
who don't say thank you and who are not grateful are arrogant
and they think they deserve, that the world owes them something,
that everybody owes them something. But gratitude is a lost art,
unholy, unholy. without natural affection. Did
you ever think that you would see the Oval Office with the
President of the United States full of lesbians and homosexuals,
meeting there with the President of the United States, welcomed
with open arms? Did you ever think in your wildest
imagination that such a thing would ever occur? That represents
this whole nation. What goes on there is the representation
of the whole nation. Without natural affection. Murdering parents, child abuse. Somebody recently, a couple,
put an infant's head in boiling water. This is in our, this is,
you turn, open your newspaper every day, And you see things
and read things you never could have imagined would ever take
place. Common practice. Truth breakers. Covenant breakers. Contract breakers. Promises not kept. They're not
expected to be kept. There was a day when they were
expected to be kept. A man's word, that was his character. His word, he valued it like God
values His word. We're supposed to value ourselves.
And the false accusers, liars, incontinent, not able
to control fleshly appetite. That's what incontinent means. Out of control, just out of control. Drugs and alcohol, just we're
out of control in this country. Fierce. People are fierce today,
like cornered beasts. Drive down the highway and just
cut in front of somebody some day and let you turn back and
look at their faces. If they could kill you, they'd
do it. Fierce. People standing in the supermarket
line are fierce. They're fierce. They're like
beasts. They're despisers of those that
are good. They hate, they hate people who
are righteous. They hate people who are holy.
They hate people who love God. Because they hate God. They hate people who are truly
godly, who stand for the Word of God. They make fun of them.
They ridicule them. They're despisers of those that
are good. When our Lord Jesus walked this earth, He was despised
of men, hated and rejected and crucified. And it's still so.
It's worse today than ever. They're traitors. Traitors. To preserve themselves,
they'll reveal the secrets of anybody. I've often wondered how people
could be praised and adored in their books about who worked
for someone and knew their secrets, and then when they got an offer
to write things, just expose everything that was told them
in secret. That's a traitor. A traitor is not just a person
who betrays his country, he's a person who betrays a secret
of any kind. Traitors, heady, high-minded,
vain, conceit, proud of their gifts and intelligence, heady,
high-minded, lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God, which
takes us back to verse 1, lovers of their own self. Now, Paul
said, that perilous time. And that's our time. And honestly,
I know a little bit about history and the history of nations. Many
of you do. And these things fit today more
than any other day, from the top to the bottom. And if the next 30 years, are as loose and depraved as the last
30. If we come as far in the next
30 as we've come downhill, this 30 in mind and attitude and spirit
and conduct, it'll be tough to live in this. I fear for our
young people. All right, look, notice the second
thing. That's the perilous times Paul talks about. That's the
reason I believe we're in the last days of the last days. Perilous
times. Godliness, truth. All right, they're religious
times. Listen to this. Having a form of godliness, but
denying the power thereof from such turn away. Today's population. Brother man, you, Paul's just
described our day. Yes? And he keeps on describing
it, it's a religious day. This is a religious day. People
today are not without religion. Religion is flourishing. It's
popular. Religion is everywhere. They're
not without religion, but listen, they're without Christ. They're
without God. They're without a true hope of
which you spoke a moment ago. They're not without religion,
but they're without Christ, without hope in Christ, without God,
without the gospel. They have, he says, listen here,
they have a form of godliness. They have a form of godliness.
They have an external show of godliness, an external show of
religion. They have a form of godliness,
but deny the power. Could I define for you the average
church in your town today, the average preacher? Now this morning
at 11 o'clock all over this town, all over my town they're meeting. They have a form of godliness.
They have an exterior, outward form and ceremony of godliness,
but deny the power. Now think of this, number one,
they profess to believe in the existence of God, but they deny
His power, His sovereignty. They deny God's right and power
to accomplish His purpose and do His will. They deny the power
of God. They have a form of godliness. They preach the existence of
God. But they render him powerless. He's a figurehead like the Queen
of England. The King of England used to have
power. He did what he will, with whom
he will, when he would. But the Queen of England has
no power. She's queen in name only. And
today's God is God in name only. He has no power. Let me read you a scripture.
Isaiah chapter 46, where God describes Himself. He says in
Isaiah 46, 9, Remember the things of old, I'm God. There's none
else. I'm God. There's none like unto
me. I declare the end from the beginning.
From ancient times are things that are not yet done, saying,
My counsel shall stand. I will do all my pleasure. Calling
a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executed my counsel
from a far country, I've spoken it. I'll bring it to pass. I've
purposed it. I'll do it. That's God. But today's
God can't do anything unless we give Him permission. So that's
having a form of godliness denying the power. Having a God, but
a God with no power. And then secondly, they profess
to believe the Scriptures. Today's religion even calls the
Scriptures the Word of God. But they deny the power of the
Word of God. The Word of God is the power
of God unto salvation. Of His own will beget he us with
the Word of truth. Paul says, I'm not ashamed of
the gospel of Christ, it's the power of God. What's that word,
the Greek word, in Romans 1 16? Power. Dunamis. I'm not ashamed
of the gospel of Christ, it's the dunamis. Dunamis. What is dunamis? Dynamite, that's
what that word is. Dynamite, the gospel of dynamite. The Word of God is life-giving,
life-keeping, life-promising. The Gospel is the power of God. But this generation doesn't believe
that. When I preach the Gospel, I believe
that Gospel I preach has the power, it's the seed of the Word. You read this, we're born again,
not a corruptible seed. That's how you were born the
first time. When your mother and father got together and seed
was planted, that's how you were begotten. The seed, the seed
of the man was planted and life, a baby was born. Well, let me
tell you something. We're born again, not a corruptible
seed, but an incorruptible seed, the Word of God. And when the
word of Christ and the truth of Christ and the gospels preach,
that's how sinners live. That's how sinners are brought
from a spiritual grave. That's how life is begotten of
his own will, begat he of his own will, the sovereign God,
begat he us with the word of truth. That's how you live. You heard the word. My sheep
hear my voice, and I give them life. They hear and live. Hear and live. The seed. A sower went forth to sow, and
some fell on good ground, and came forth the seed. This is
the Word. But the preachers are preaching
today, but they don't believe that Word is the power of God
and salvation. But it is. It's the Word. And thirdly, They profess to
believe in Jesus Christ. But Jesus Christ, they deny His
deity. He's God. Who is Jesus Christ? He's God Almighty. He's the Creator
of the world. By Him, all things were made
that are made. Without Him, there was nothing
made that was made. He's the Creator. He does seem to have seen the
Father. I and my Father are one. Sure, I believe in Father, Son,
Holy Spirit, but they're one. God as Father, as Son, as Spirit. They're one. You can't know the
Father if you don't know the Son. And you can't know the Son
without the Spirit revealing the Son. And no man has seen
the Father at any time save the Son, and He to whom the Son will
reveal Him. Jesus Christ is God. And I'll
tell you something else. Everything he did, he did on
purpose. Everything he said on this earth, everything he did
on this earth, his righteousness, his death, his blood, his resurrection
was ordained to the Father from the foundation of the world.
And he said, I come not to do my will, but the will of him
that sent me, not to speak my words, but the words of him that
sent me, not to do my works, but the works of him that sent
me. And when he died, he said, finished. He didn't come to try to save
His people, to make His people savable, but to fix it so they
could save themselves. He came to save them. And this
generation denies that. Jesus Christ is all-powerful,
omnipotent, all-present, omniscient, and all-knowing. That's right. And He shall not fail. He cannot
pay. They preach Jesus Christ, but
deny the power. Another thing about it, they
believe in the Holy Spirit, but deny the power of the Holy Spirit,
His power to regenerate, His power to sanctify, His power
to set us. My brother-in-law used to have
cutting horses, and those horses are trained to go in and cut
steer or cave out from the perfect. Isn't that right? Cut him out
and keep him out. And the Holy Spirit comes out
of this whole mass of humanity and He comes to cut out the Johns
and the Henrys and the Joes and the Steves. He cuts them out. He cuts them out from the... He comes to call out a people
for His name, to redeem a people out of every nation. and He sanctifies
you, separates you, won't let you back with Him, separates
you for Him. The Holy Spirit is powerful. The Holy Spirit doesn't try to
quicken or regenerate, He does. They talk about a gospel, but
that gospel is the power of God unto salvation, the power of
God. Is it really? Is He almighty? Describe your God. David, where's
your God? Our God's in the heaven. Tell me about it. He does whatsoever
he pleases. Whatsoever the Lord pleases.
That's what he does in heaven, earth, and the seas, and all
deep places. David said, that's my God. You're Christ. Describe Him to me. He's an effectual,
victorious, conquering Redeemer who came to save a people. and
present them to the Father, holy, unblameable, complete in Him. Give them eternal life. That's
right. Your gospel, what does it do?
It's the power of God. It's the dunamis. Everybody in
here, if that were nitroglycerin, you'd be scared to death to be
holding it here as old as I am. I'm holding something a whole
lot more powerful than nitroglycerin. I'm holding something here that's
the power of God to life, the gospel, the very power of God. I believe that. I believe that. I'm like, I'm like God's blood
hand. I'm looking for a sheep. I'm looking for lost sheep. And
when I find them, they're going to hear this word and they're
going to come home. They're going to hear it. Oh, some will hear
it and laugh at it, some will hear it and ridicule it, some
will hear it and criticize it, some will hear it and hate it,
but the sheep will hear it and believe. Life. Having a form
of godliness but denying the power. I'll tell you something
else about this religious generation. Verse six, for of this sort are
they which creep into houses and leave captive silly women.
laden with sins and led away with diverse lusts, ever learning
and never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. Today's religion—now,
ladies, I wouldn't offend you for anything in the world, but
I do know that every cult and sect and freewill religion, Arminianism,
is controlled and dominated by women. their voices, their activities,
their preaching, and their teaching. That's just so. And yet the Scripture
says, let your women keep silence in the church. It's not permitted
for them to teach, to preach, but a use of propriety over man.
Isn't that what God's Word says? Because woman, Adam was not deceived
in the fall, the woman was deceived. And God does not lead a church
through a woman. He does not have any women preachers,
or teachers, or ministers, or pastors. Not Almighty God. Let's read those scriptures.
Turn to 1 Timothy chapter 2. 1 Timothy chapter 2, verse 12. This is one of the problems.
We've got leaders that aren't God's leaders. We've got preachers
and teachers that aren't God's preachers and teachers. 1 Timothy
2, verse 11. He tells the women what they're
to do back here. Verse 8, he says, I therefore
pray that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands without
wrath and doubting, and like men are the women. Adorn themselves
in modest apparel with shamefacedness, sobriety, not with braided hair,
gold or pearls, or costly array, but which becometh women professing
godliness with good works, and let your women keep silent. With
all subjections, I suffer not a woman, not any of the teach,
to run a business meeting, to use the authority over a man,
to plan the church program, to be on the pulpit committee, but
to be in silence. And here's the reason. Adam was
first formed and then Eve. Adam was not deceived, but the
woman was deceived in the transgression. And God said, your husband will
rule over you. He's the priest of the home.
He's the leader of the home. He's the voice of God in the
home and in the church. Turn back to 1 Corinthians 14.
1 Corinthians chapter 14. Listen to verse 34. 1 Corinthians
13, 34. Let your women keep silence in
the churches. It's not permitted for them to
preach, to speak. to lead. They're commanded to
be under obedience. That's also said in the law. It's the whole law of God. It
goes back to the beginning. And if they're learning anything,
let them ask their husbands at home. It's a shame for a woman
to speak in the church, to take authority and leadership. There's
ten thousand things they can do, ten thousand things. with the other ladies, to teach
the other ladies, to teach the children, to help their children,
to set an example, to sing, to rejoice, to praise God, to pray
with other women, but to lead the church, to be the voice of
God in teaching and usurping authority and lead the church.
God won't bless them. And these denominations today,
they're creeped He says here, they creep into houses and leave
captives. Most of these televangelists
are supported, according to the facts, by women. That's who they surround themselves
with. And he says over here in verse 7, ever learning, ever
learning. They've studied missions and
studied prayer and studied prophecy and studied the gift of the Spirit,
studied history, but never come into the knowledge of the truth.
Truth of what? What happened in the garden?
In the fall? What happened to Adam? What happened
on the cross? Christ redeemed the people. What
happens in the heart of a sinner when God saves him? How can God
be just and justify the ungodly? They don't deal with those things.
They deal with emotional things. You watch them on television
sitting, talking, or preaching, and they don't have a Bible.
They're just talking out of their feelings and emotions. and things
of this nature. Is that offensive? It's the truth. It's God's Word. Now, let's go
on quickly and let me throw you through. But he said, now in
verse 8, As Janus and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these
also resist the truth. Men of corrupt minds reprobate
concerning the faith. These people who are adversaries
to the gospel, and they're female followers, they oppose the message
of grace. But listen, you go back to when
God sent Moses down into Egypt to deliver the people, and he
had his rod, and God said, cast it down, and it became a serpent.
Do you remember? And then Janes and James the so-called wise
men of Pharaoh. He called them up and they duplicated
Moses' feet. They opposed him. See that? And he says this is, this true
preachers of the gospel are going to be opposed by the Jainies
and Jainbrishes of all the world. They're going to be 2 to 1 or
10 to 1 or like Elijah on the mountain, 450 to 1. But they're
going to oppose it. But listen to verse 9. They shall
proceed no further for their follies shall be manifested unto
all men. As theirs was, so will these
who oppose the truth today." Every false preacher's got a
meeting with the Red Sea, just like these guys. And then here's the heart-searching
time. Let me show you this. Paul said,
Timothy, you've known my doctrine. Total depravity, sovereignty
of God, unconditional particular redemption, effectual call, perseverance
of the saints, Christ's righteousness, his precious blood, salvation
by grace. You know my doctrine. You know
my doctrine. You know your pastor's doctrine.
You know my manner of life. Paul wasn't an entertainer. He
wasn't a master of ceremonies. Paul was a preacher. A preacher
of God, true preacher is a plain man. a man easy to understand,
a man simple, a man straightforward, not a covetous man, not seeking
his own way, not seeking his own gain. He seeks the glory
of God and the good of the people. You know that. Paul said, you
know my doctrine, you know my manner of life, and you know
my purpose, to glorify Christ and to bring you to a knowledge
of Christ. That's my purpose. We preach not ourselves, but
Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your servants for Christ's sake.
That's my purpose. You know my faith, Christ alone. The pastor described that a while
ago, just as effective as it can be described. You know my
patience, waiting on the Lord, long-suffering. You know my charity. You know I love you. You know
I do. You know I love Him. You know
we love each other. You know those things. You know
our patience. Well, you know our persecutions.
You know the afflictions that came to me at Antioch, Iconium,
Lystra. What persecutions I endured,
but you know this, the Lord delivers us out of all of them. Doesn't
He? He has and He will. Our mountains
and valleys, but He delivers us out of them. Yea, and all
that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
That's just so. That's just so. But I'm telling
you this now, don't expect it to improve. Listen. Evil men
and seducers will wax worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. Now, here's our foundation. But
you continue in those things which you've learned. Back through
the years, you've learned. You've been taught. You've been
assured, has been assured of knowledge, and of whom thou hast
learned them. Who taught you? Well, your pastors
taught you. But God taught you. We learned
of the Father. No man can come to me except
my Father which sent me. Draw him, and he that cometh
will learn of the Father and be taught of God. You've been
taught of God. And listen, and from a child,
from a child, you've known the Holy Scriptures. Here's our foundation. Here's our foundation. We've
been taught of God and the Holy Scriptures from a child. You
haven't always believed this gospel, but you've known about
it from a child, from your mama's knee, and your daddy's instructions
and examples, which are able to make you wise under salvation
through faith which is in Jesus Christ. That's our foundation.
Even in the most perilous times, oh, how blessed we are just to
have the Word. You gather together like you
did a little while ago. open the Word and rejoice in
it. This is our foundation. Because
all Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and it's profitable for
doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
that the man of God may be perfect, mature, truly furnished under
all good works. Thank God that he's been pleased
to revealed His gospel to us, and give us a love for that gospel,
and a confidence in His Word, and an understanding of His Word.
Oh, how blessed we are. Well, even so, come, Lord Jesus. I'm ready. I'm ready. You are,
too, for His coming. Our Father, bless Your Word. How we love this Word. How thankful
we are for Your Word. How unworthy we are. For it is
man that is not mindful of Him. And yet in Christ Jesus, not
only mindful of us, but You love us, chose us, redeemed us, called
us, kept us one day to take us into Your very presence.
Make us like your son, the Lord Jesus, and we're grateful. In
his name, amen.

About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
