I don't know if it was last week
or the week before last, I preached on Christ our atonement. And
it made me, and when we was up at Ashland last week, a fellow
made mention of the Day of Atonement. Just two goats. And so I thought
this week, the Lord laid it on my heart to bring a message on
the Day of Atonement. I read to you how that Aaron offered sacrifices for himself and then he had two goats for the Lord's people. One he
made a sin offering to the Lord and the other was a scapegoat,
the one that was responsible to carry the sins away, take
the place of all the sins the one they kept the sins on and
carried them off into the wilderness. But the day of atonement was
Israel's great day. Everything concerning the tabernacle
and the people derived their value from the atonement offered
just once a year. Look down here in verse 33. Let
me show you what I mean. Everything had to be made an
atonement for blood had to be shed for it. I mean everything And he shall make an atonement
for the Holy Sanctuary That's the first thing the place where
the people of God meet with that brazen altar was this the sanctuary
You have to make an atonement for that Then he shall make an
atonement for the tabernacle itself the tabernacle itself
of the congregation then he's got to make an atonement for
the altar and then he has to make an atonement for the priests
and for all the people of the congregation everything that
had anything to do with God had to have an atonement made for
it and that's what he said here in verse 12 look what he says
in verse 12 then he goes into the holiest of holies here And
on this day, everything was cleansed and made acceptable to God for
another year. Then he goes behind the altar,
behind the veil. He shall take a censer full of
burning coals of fire off the altar, that altar, that brazen
altar before the Lord. And that censer's got to be full
of incense, beaten small, and bring it within the veil. Then
put the incense upon the fire before the Lord that the cloud
of incense may cover the mercy seat that's upon the testimony,
the ark that's under that mercy seat. Take the blood of the bullock
and the goat and take that before the mercy
seat. the blood of the bullock sprinkled with his finger upon
the mercy seat eastward before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle
of the blood with his finger seven times then then he shall
kill the goat of the sin offering that's for the people bring that
blood within the veil in and out in and out behind that veil
and bring his blood within the veil and do with that blood as
he did with the blood of the bullock and sprinkle upon the
mercy seat and before the mercy seat and he shall make an atonement
for the holy place here's the reason has to be because of the
uncleanness of the children of Israel because of their transgressions
and all their sins and so shall he do for the tabernacle the
congregation in the midst of their uncleanness so everything
on this day of atonement was cleansed everything made acceptable
to God for a year And I tell you what, and it was the most
solemn, solemn day in all the year to the high priest. It was
just once a year. Not only did he have to make
atonement for himself, then he had to go make atonement for
everything else. And the day of our Lord Jesus
Christ, humiliation. When our Lord Jesus came into
this world, sin of His Father, sent to come do a work, this
greatest and most solemn day between the eternities between
the eternities was what our Lord Jesus Christ accomplished on
that cross everything that God purposed from time and eternity
was all pivots everything between the eternities pivots and it's
what our Lord God sent him, purposed him to come And that day on that
cross, the most solemn day to God the Father, God the Son,
and to anybody that knows what took place that day. Between
the eternities, the day our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified. What a solemn day that was for
Him, and for His Father, and for His people. And it was solemn
day our Lord Jesus Christ. You know what He said about it?
He told his disciples, I must go up to Jerusalem and I must
suffer. I must. And he said, I have a baptism
to be baptized with. Then he got out in the garden,
he said, my soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death. And then he said, Father, glorify
thou me with the glory I had with thee before the world was,
because I finished the work that you gave me to do. Gave me to
do. But here in verse 30, the key
to this whole chapter is in verse 30. Look down at verse 30. The key to this whole chapter
is in verse 30. Look what he says here. There's
a work to do. Four little old things here that
you see in this one verse. the work the priest shall make an atonement
for you that's the work he has to do make an atonement for you
the worker the priest who is going to do this the priest is
going to do it what time is he going to do it? on that day on
that day on that day what day? the day the Lord made the day
the Lord said this is the day to do this And the purpose behind
it is this, to cleanse you that you may be cleaned, listen to
this, from all your sins, where it really counts, before the
Lord. Clean from all your sins. Now
this great day of atonement, the first thing I want to say
about it was a day of humiliation. Day of humiliation. Look back
over here in verse 4. Talking about Aaron. He's the
first high priest. First priest in all of Israel.
And this is what he says is going to happen on this day. He shall
put on the holy linen coat. And he shall have the linen breeches
upon his flesh. Got a jacket he puts on and then
linen pants he pulls up. And then he has a girdle around
him, a belt around him with a linen girdle. And the linen mitre shall
be attired upon his head. These are holy garments. And
he's got to wash his flesh in water and so put them on. Now
what in this world do I mean that this is a day of humiliation?
Because this priest, he had beautiful, beautiful, beautiful garments
to put on. Glorious garments. Incredible
garments. With gold on them and blue and
purple. You keep this and look in Exodus
28 and I'll show you what I'm talking about. Exodus 28. And look at what kind of clothes
he wore before. Exodus 28 verse 2. And this is a day of humiliation.
All this stuff of the garments of glory and beauty had to be
laid aside for plain holy garment. And look what it says here. And
thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother, listen
to this, for glory and beauty. And you talk to tell those wise
hearted whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom that they
may make Aaron's garments to consecrate in him that he may
minister unto me in the priest's office. And these are the garments
which they shall make, a breastplate, that's the first thing you make,
to go over his breast, and an ephod, that's a jacket that goes
around hooked on either side, and a robe, and a broidered coat,
and a miter, and a girdle, a belt that goes around, they shall
make holy garments for Aaron thy brother and his sons that
he may minister unto me and the priest. Now listen to how they're
made now. And they shall take gold, not just white linen, blue,
purple, scarlet, fine linen. And they shall make the ephod
of gold. Gold, they threaded that thing with gold. Of blue
and of purple and scarlet and fine twine linen with cutting
work. Now that's the kind of clothes
he wore. diamonds on them, all kinds of gems on them, and all
kinds of glory on them. And I tell you, He had to lay
those aside. And that our Lord Jesus Christ,
you talking about somebody laying something aside. When our Lord
came into this world, this high priest just had to lay aside
his garments. Christ He laid aside his glory. The scriptures tell us that he
made himself of no reputation. He took upon himself the form
of a servant and being found in fashion as a man. He humbled
himself. That means he emptied himself
of his glory. Now our Lord had the glory that
he had with the Father. But that glory was veiled in
what? Flesh. He was as glorious and
as beautiful in the sight of God and His people as He ever
was. He's beautiful. He's glorious.
But to the average person, when you saw Him, you did not see
unless God took and opened your eyes. When you looked at Christ,
you saw just a man. But when God gave a man eyes,
he could see the glory and beauty in Christ. And that glory and
beauty he had before he come into this world, he laid it aside. Laid it aside. And oh my, and
I'll tell you something about Aaron. He couldn't represent
the people before God, before the atonement was made. An atonement
had to be made before Aaron could even represent the people. And
Christ, Christ made an atonement for us. and represents us before
the people, before God or else we couldn't even approach Him.
Our Lord Jesus laid aside everything and so He was a day of humiliation
and I'm going to tell you this is what I believe and I've preached
this before that you know the greatest humiliation our Lord
Jesus Christ went through when He came to this earth? Just the fact that He dwelt in
eternity that he was God and just became a man. That's humiliating
enough that Christ would become a man, become so identified with
us. Told my son one time, he was
talking about what somebody did and he couldn't believe they'd
do that. And I said, well, if you ever find out what you're
like, you won't have a bit of problem to realize why people
do what they do. Huh? The Lord Jesus Christ The
Son of God took upon Himself the form of
a servant. What a humiliating thing! What
a humiliating thing for Him to come into this world and human
beings, flesh that He created, men and women that He gave life
and breath, and upholds him by the word of his power would curse
him and hate him and ridicule him and accuse him and he instead of making himself
a reputation say listen don't you know who I am? I'm the son
of God you can't treat me like this you can't treat me this
way no he didn't even open his mouth
Didn't even open his mouth. And oh, I'll tell you something
else about our Lord Jesus. And there's another second thing
about this day. It was a day of special sacrifices. I read to you how the priest
first had to offer a sacrifice for himself. The first thing
he had to do, you know why he had to offer a sacrifice for
himself? Because he's like everybody else. He was a sinner. He had
an office, but he's still a sinner. And he couldn't approach God
until he offered a sacrifice first for himself. And then that
sacrifice covered his whole house. He couldn't offer a sacrifice
for nobody else until he offered one for himself. And his own
standing before God has to be secure. And how can it be secure?
That's what he said when he goes into that holy place. They've
got to go in there a certain way with certain sacrifices and
do a certain thing or he'll die. He's got to come in there first
with a sin offering. And you know, I always wondered
how they got behind the veil. And I thought they'd have to
crawl under it. But I got to thinking about it the other day.
They could go around to the edge of it and go behind it. Slip
behind it on either side. But anyway, here's what happened. He had to go in there and make
a sacrifice for himself. And his whole standing before
God had to be sure, had to be sure, and had to be secured. And the only way it could be
sure and secured for him to offer a sacrifice first for himself.
But let me tell you something. Our Lord Jesus Christ did not
have to make his offering sure and did not have to make his
standing sure before God. And here's another thing. He
did not have to offer a sacrifice for himself. Oh listen, he's
not like this high priest. Our great high priest did not
have to offer sacrifice for himself. Why? Because he wasn't like Aaron. He wasn't a sinner like us. That's
the whole purpose of the virgin birth. So he wouldn't be identified
with us as far as our sin nature is concerned. Look at Hebrews
chapter 10. Look at Hebrews 10. This will
be a blessing to you. Oh my! You know, he had to offer
a sacrifice for himself. He had to make his standing before
God sure. Ours has to be sure. How's our
standing going to be sure before God? How's our standing before
God going to be secure and sure? The Lord Jesus didn't have to
secure his standing before God and offer himself a sacrifice.
Look what it said in Hebrews 10, here in verse 11. And this is what he said, every
priest stands daily, ministering, offering, oftentimes the same
sacrifices, which can never take away sins. Now you know what
this tells me? And why this high priest offered
a sacrifice for himself and Christ didn't have to? Is that if you try to offer a
sacrifice for yourself, and it's not the one that God provided,
you won't be accepted. If God didn't provide it, you
won't be accepted. And I tell you what, is there
anyone of us can offer a sacrifice to God to make us acceptable?
Have we ever prayed a prayer? Have we ever thought a good thought?
Have we ever said a good word? Have we ever done a good deed? Have we ever done anything that
makes us acceptable to God in any one moment? But look what
he said. They offer the same sacrifices,
never take away sin. But this man, after he had offered
one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of
God. Oh, listen. I tell you, our Lord
Jesus Christ He said, God said, this is my elect and whom my
soul delights. He said, oh, you know what else
he said about him? He said, he shall not fail and
he won't be discouraged. Our Lord Jesus was holy, harmless,
undefiled, and he entered once, once, once into the holy place. with
his own blood like this high priest went in there with the
blood of both and the blood of others Christ entered once into
the holy place into that tabernacle up in heaven in glory in God's
presence made without hands and he come back out with eternal
redemption huh oh bless his holy name And I'll tell you something
else. Look in verse 17, that priest
went in there by himself. There wasn't nobody there to
help him. And nobody's supposed to even be there. Look what it
said back over here in Leviticus 16. Look what it says in verse
17. And there shall be no man in
the tabernacle, the congregation, when he goeth in to make an atonement
in the holy place. Nobody else can be there. He
got to do this. And who could be there when our
Lord Jesus Christ did that? He by Himself purchased our sins. Oh my! Nobody else could be there. No other man could be there.
He went in there by Himself. And I tell you what, Christ does
not need our hand put to anything he's done. He by himself, this
man, offered himself without spot, without blemish before
God. And I'll tell you, it was a day
of special sacrifices. Now look down here. He said in
verse 9 with these did this offering this day of special sacrifices
the two goats For the Lord's people now watch what happens
there in verse 9. It says That verse verse 9 Aaron
shall bring the goat Upon which the Lord's lot fell
and offering for a sin offering And then that other goat, he
says, you know, but in verse 10, but the goat on which the
Lord fell to be the scapegoat shall be presented alive before
the Lord to make an atonement with him. Let him go for a scapegoat.
And here's the thing, beloved. These two goats was just one
offering. And old Scott used to say this,
and I'd drive it home, drive it home. He said, God has to
do something for himself before he can do anything for us. And
that first goat, they had two goats, kids, little goats, baby
goats. They take those goats and they
cast lots. And the one that was for the
Lord, see the first one, the one that has to die is before
the Lord. So we have to have an offering
before the Lord. A sin offering has to be made
before the Lord. And then there's the same goat,
those two goats, one has to take our sins away. So our Lord Jesus
Christ was one offering, and like those two goats, one was
before the Lord and wants to take away our sins. One to make
us acceptable to God, and the other to take them away. And
I tell you what, beloved, just one offering and one, this one,
one that they slew and offered the blood before the Lord. That's
our atonement. That's our sin offering. That's
our sacrifice. Our Lord Jesus Christ made peace
through the blood of his cross. And oh, he was the Lamb of God
slain from the foundation of the world. So we had to have
an offering before the Lord. And then we had to have someone
to take away our sin. So God provided himself one offering
in the Lord Jesus Christ, one for himself and his blessed son. And then he provided us a substitute
in his blessed son. One died to make us acceptable
to God. We were made accepted into beloved.
And then the other one, they had to take our sins on him and
carry him away. And our Lord Jesus Christ did
both. And those two ghosts was one
offering. They both are going to do the same thing. One is
going to make our sins go before God and the other is going to
make them go before our conscience. So we can see it. Oh my, he himself talking about
substitution he himself bore our sins in his own body on the
tree he was the just for the unjust being put to death in
the flesh why? that he might bring us to
God and Isaiah 53 says this talking about that goat that was carried
off carried off. It says our Lord
Jesus Christ was cut off, cut off out of the land of the living. And then look what else, it was
a day of, oh, day of blessed, blessed and solemn imputation.
Look what it says here in verse 21, 22. Day of solid and blessed
imputation. And there shall they both his
hands upon the head of the live goat and confess over him all
the iniquities of the children of Israel and all their transgressions
and all their sins putting them upon the head of the goat and
shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness
and the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto
a land not inhabited, and he shall let the goat go in the
wilderness." What happened was that the sins of Israel, I don't
know how he could have done it, but it said he confessed all
their sins, ain't that what it says? All their iniquities and
all their transgressions. You know how we do that? said Lord I'm a sinner top of
my head to the sole of my foot inside and outside in every way
shape form or fashion I'm a sinner and that's what he does said
Lord these people are sorry they're sinful They're full of iniquity. They transgress you and everything
you are and everything you stand for in your wholeness, every
moment of every day of their life. And Lord, they're just
not worth nothing. and he'd put his hands on that
goat, and he'd say, Lord, everybody here is a sinner. Everybody here
is transgressed. Everybody here is full of iniquities
and lawlessness. Oh, Lord, and he'd put them hands
on them, and oh, I confess on them. And then a fellow would get him.
And what it means is that that goat was made a curse for us.
He was cursed. And a fellow got him and he headed
off into the wilderness. A land not inhabited. And I tell
you what. And carry him away. Carry him
away. Into a land, and the scripture
said into a land not inhabited. You know what? Our Lord Jesus,
that scapegoat was led into a land not inhabited. And I'm going
to tell you something. When our Lord Jesus Christ was
on that cross and he cried out, my God, my God, why hast thou
forsaken me? I'm going to tell you, our Lord
went into a place uninhabited. God forsook him. Man forsook him. The sun forsook
him. It didn't shine for three hours. He went into a place uninhabited. he went into a place and when
he went into that place uninhabited he went in there and you know
what he was doing he was carrying our sins to a place where they'll
never ever be brought back against us ever again not just for a
year for eternity and when that son come back out and our Lord
cried out it is finished It is finished. It really was. He went over there and God's
not there. The only people that was there was people that were
cursing him, deriding him, making fun of him. And I mean even creation forsook
him. The scripture says that the rocks
burst And there he was, forsaken of
God and man. Angels! Son was gone, but he was gone
someplace. Where was he going? He was going
into the place that he had inhabited. He even inhabited a place called
hell. The only place he inhabited that
day was death. And he died. And when he died,
went into that wilderness of death. He took our sins away. Took them away. And when he come out of that
grave on Sunday morning, God said, I justify them. They
ain't got no more sin. And you know what the scripture
said? God said, I will remember their sins and iniquities no
more. Oh, bless his holy name. I'm
going to tell you something. You know, we didn't do nothing
to become sinners. Born that way. Right? Shaped in iniquity and conceived
in sin. How did we become lost? How did
we become sinners? by one man's sin, by imputation. One man did one thing, and that
one thing, that that one man caused all of us to become sinners. We was lost by not doing anything.
We became sinners by not doing anything. And I'll tell you what,
and you know we're saved by not doing nothing. Christ did it
all. I didn't have to do anything
to become a sinner. I was born that way. It's in my nature.
And I got saved the same way. But what another man did. I was saved. I was lost by a
representative. A man who represented me in the
Garden of Eden. And I'm saved by the same way.
By a representative. And I love it like that. By Adam
came sin. By Christ came righteousness.
By Adam came death, by Christ came life. Adam came sin, Christ
put sin away. Bless his holy name. Oh my, ain't
you grateful, ain't you thankful that you know that the Lord Jesus
Christ himself. You know God, ain't this a blessing
that we don't have to go out here and confess our sins? that
we don't have to be like those high priests when they put their
head on that thing and that guy carried him back. And they had
to do this every single year. We don't have to. We just come
here to acknowledge that everything's already done. That's why we're
worshiping Him who did it all. Blessing Him who did it all.
He went into the wilderness Not only to go there and put our
sins away, but the scripture said when he had lost sheep,
he goes into the wilderness to find the lost sheep. And when
he's found it, he'll find it. Believe me, he'll find that sheep.
And when he's found it, you know what he does? Put it on his shoulder.
Oh, here's another thing about this day of atonement. It was
a day of nearness, nearness to God. Look what he says here in
verse 12. And he shall take a censer full
of burning coals of fire from off the altar. And Christ, His
intercession for us is our censer. He makes the intercession for
us. He makes His prayers a sweet-smelling
savor. And they take the burning coals
of fire from off the altar before the Lord. Everything's before
the Lord, see. And His hands full of sweet incense,
beating small, Christ crowned down. And bring it within the
veil. Gotta bring that sweet smelling
thing within the veil. That sweet smelling, beating
small. Our Lord Jesus Christ. Our sweet,
sweet smelling Savior. Before God. Broad down, beating
small. And He shall put the incense.
Now watch this. Upon the fire. And again, it
says everything says before the Lord. That's what we gotta understand
before the Lord. And that cloud of incense is
gonna cover the mercy seat. Oh, listen, we got someone covering
the mercy seat, this wonderful fragrance. Christ, that sweet
savor of unto God for us. And look at what he says here.
That is upon the testimony. That mercy seat's got to have
that incense on it, that sweet smell, that sacrifice, that offering
of our Lord Jesus Christ, the sweet savor of his intercession
for us. Upon the testimony, upon the
covenant, upon the law. that he die not and oh my and
he shall take the blood of the bullock and listen to this and sprinkle
it with his finger upon the mercy seats of the tabernacle set east
and west and that altar is always set toward the east And look
what he says now. And sprinkle with his finger
upon the mercy seed eastward, and before the mercy seed shall
he sprinkle the blood with his finger seven times. Then he shall
kill, listen to this, then he shall kill the goat of the sin
offering. And this one is for the people. He had to go in there
with that incense, you see. And smoke covers that incense.
We've got to have some way to approach that mercy seed. Then
shall he kill the goat for the sin offering for the people.
And then he's going to bring the blood within the veil, do
with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and
sprinkle upon the mercy seat before the mercy seat. So here's
what happens. He went in that veil, right into
the presence of God itself. And that mercy seat, Christ our
mercy seat, Christ our atonement. And he went behind that veil.
And say this was the mercy seat. He'd stand before that, he'd
take that blood. And he had seven times on that
mercy seat. But before he put on that mercy
seat, you know what he had to do? Before he could even stand
before the mercy seat, he had to stand right in front of it. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. He had to have a holy place to
stand. He couldn't even stand before the mercy seat without
cleansing. And then to make it even more
acceptable, we got to put it on the mercy seat. And I tell
you what, do you know what seven means? Perfect. Perfection. And our Lord Jesus Christ, that
priest, he had to go in and out behind that veil. Go in and out
behind that veil. Went in there with a bullet,
then went in there with the incense, then went in there with the ghost
blood. And I tell you, one was for himself
and the other was for us. And I tell you what, you know
what happened the day our Lord Jesus Christ died? They had to
go behind that veil. And if that fellow, if that high
priest didn't do right, he's going to die there. That's why
they had that shelter. They had a thing that they could
reach in there and drag him out. I wonder how many of them died
in there. I wonder, you've got to wonder, did some of them fellas
die in there? If they didn't do it God's way,
they did. And I know this, when our Lord Jesus Christ cried,
it is finished. You know what happened to the
veil? And that veil in that tabernacle, the outward cord was 15 by 30. Where the brazen altar was, the
labor and all that, 15 by 30. But when you went behind where
that veil was, it's 15 by 15. One thing behind that, the mercy
seat and the Ark of the Covenant under it. Mercy seat covered
that ark. And the day our Lord Jesus Christ
died, they had that great big tabernacle, that great big temple
in Jerusalem. And the day he cried it is finished,
that thing is just one thing, one great big curtain hanging
there. When our Lord Jesus cried it is finished, that thing from
the top to the bottom split wide open. You know what? To show there
wasn't nothing behind there that could do anybody any good and
that now all of his people can come into the holiest of holies
by new! New! In a living way! How's that? Through the blood
of our Lord Jesus Christ and the flesh You know what the veil
is now? The veil was His flesh and He
opened the way for us into the holiest of holies. You know when
we come before God, we come into the place that the high priest
can only go in there once a year. We go in there every time we
seek the Lord. God opened a way for us. It's
a new way. Not like they did. And it's a
living way, not by sacrifices over and over and over. Through
the blood, through the veil, through the flesh of our Lord
Jesus Christ. It's now made manifest. Now made
manifest. Oh, bless his holy name. I'll
tell you what, and he took, and when we go into the presence
of God, Our Lord Jesus Christ, even when we don't know what
we're doing, He's up there making intercession for us. And His
intercessions, those sweet incense of prayer that go up onto that
mercy seat for us. And that bluff was sprinkled
to show our complete acceptance and our secure standing. And then let me show you this
real quick. I'll tell you, I hope I'm not
taking too long. Here's another thing. It was a day of affliction. of real affliction look here
in verse 29 a day of real affliction and I hope I can deal with this
right I want to and this shall be a statute forever unto you
that in the seventh month on the tenth day of the month you
shall afflict your souls now what did he mean by that? afflict
your souls How does a person afflict their soul? Well, let
me ask you this. Do you loathe yourself sometimes?
Do you just absolutely and absolutely loathe yourself? Well, that's
what affliction is. These folks understood. You see,
they're telling this sin and atonement isn't anything to be
trifled with. Trifled with. Convicted, when
you're convicted of sin, convicted of sin, And your heart becomes
broken. And those convicted sinners and
broken-hearted sinners are the only ones who want this atonement
and see the awfulness of sin and their need of atonement.
Their desperate need of atonement. You keep Leviticus and look in
Zechariah. Malachi is the last book in the
Old Testament. Zechariah is the book before
that. Look in Zechariah 12. Zechariah 12. Malachi is the
last. Zechariah is the one right before
Malachi. And look in Zechariah chapter
12. Oh my. And I'll tell you something.
I'll tell you something. I've always, since God saved
me by His grace and taught me the grace of God, taught me Christ
and revealed Christ to me and made me understand what the gospel
is, I know that my desperate need of Christ is felt by me
every day. Every day. If I wake up in the
middle of the night, I have a deed of Christ. It's a desperate need. I was talking to a man the other
day and said, Oh God, please don't let me be deceived and
do not leave me to myself in any way whatsoever. Do not leave me to my own devices. Please don't do that. You know why I say that? Because
I know me. I'm scared to death of me. I'm not scared of you, but I'm
scared of me. I know what I am. Know what I'm
capable of. Look what he said here down in
verse 10. And I will pour upon the house
of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, listen to this,
the Spirit of grace, In other words, I'm going to cry out,
I'm going to supplicate, I'm going to come up. And this is
what they're going to do when I pour this Spirit upon them.
They shall look upon me. He's talking about Christ. He's
the one doing this now. They shall look upon me whom
they have pierced. And listen to this now. And they
shall mourn for him. And shall be in bitterness for
him as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn. The death
with Christ will cause us to have this great affliction of
soul. And we mourn over our sins and
what we did to Him. And in that day there shall be
a great mourning in Jerusalem as in the mourning of Hadarim
in the valley of Megiddo. And listen to this now. And the
land shall mourn every family apart. The family of the house
of David apart and their wives apart. The family of the house
of Nathan apart and their wives apart. Everybody. And I'll tell you something.
Everyone who comes to Christ, everyone who ever came to Christ
had a need. If you don't have a need, you
won't come. And until you have a need, you will not come. And
it says there, I will pour. I'll do this. And may God pour
on you a spirit of grace and a spirit of crying out when you
see him that's pierced. I know if you, by faith, ever
see the Lord Jesus Christ as your sin offering, as your scapegoat
bearing your sin away, you know what will happen to you? Your
heart will break and you will begin mourning for your sins
like you ain't never mourned for them before. Ain't that right? Yeah. And oh, I tell you what
happens. You know what happens when that
happens? It's a day of perfect rest. Day of perfect rest. Look here at verse 29 again. you know there it says in the
middle of the verse it says you shall afflict your souls and
watch this and do no work at all you know you know that your work
ain't going to do you any good anyway so you don't it's a day
of rest don't do no work at all look down verse 31 It shall be a sabbath of rest
unto you. Sabbath of rest. You know who did all the work
on the day of atonement? The priest. He did it all. Nobody did anything that day
but the priest. And nobody did anything for us
but our great high priest, our Lord Jesus Christ. He did it
all. I want you to see this in chapter 23 and verse 27. Just to give us a little warning
here. Leviticus 23 and verse 27. Just to give us a little
warning. This is again, law about the statutes about the Day of Atonement. And I tell
you, you shall do no work at all. And also on the tenth day
of this seventh month there shall be a day of atonement. It shall
be a holy convocation unto you and you shall afflict your souls
and offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord. Now listen
to this, and you shall do no work in that same day. For it
is a day of atonement to make an atonement for you before the
Lord. For whatsoever soul it is, now listen to this, that
shall not be afflicted shall not be burdened, shall not see
their need of the atonement, shall not be grieved over their
sin. That same day, listen to what's
going to happen to him. He's going to be cut off from
the people. You don't want to mourn over your sins? You don't
see the shape you are in your sins before God don't end atonement?
God said cut them off. And whatsoever soul, listen to
this, not only cut them off if they're not afflicted, and whatsoever
soul that doeth any work in that day, if you do any work on that
day of atonement, try to add anything to it, you'll be cut
off from the people. So that tells us Christ is our
rest. And if you try to add anything
to it, God said, I'll cut you off. I'll cut you off. And I,
Lord, did it all, all to him I owed. Sin had left a crimson
stain. He washed it. Why did it go? You know, works can only bring
death from the hand of God. That's all it can bring. And
there's a verse in Leviticus 22, 21 that says, if you make
an offering unto the Lord, it shall be perfect to be accepted. and let me say this there's only
one man only one man who ever went into God's presence by his
own work by the work that he did and by his own merit that's
the Lord Jesus Christ himself and I tell you what he had such
value in his work and such merit in his person that everything
he did and whom he did it for They get to go with Him. By His Word and by His merit. Ain't that right? We get to go
there too. Huh? Oh my. I said, boy, you know, most people,
their end, their end is to end up in heaven and end up holy
and accepted before God. And they work to that end. They
hope to be accepted. I was reading about a Catholic
that died Catholic woman and here's what they do she can't
go to heaven until they have a mass for her and so she's in
limbo somewhere until they have a mass for her and make her and
then she gets to go to heaven to be the bride of Christ well
let me tell you something where they want to end up at that's
our starting place We're already made holy. We're already seated
together with Him in heaven places. We're already made acceptable.
And He said, Whom He justified, He also glorified. And whom He
glorified, whom He sanctified, He called and justified. And
this also glorified. That means it's in the past tense.
It's as good as done. We're just waiting. We're just
waiting for our change to come. That's all we're doing. That's why He said we're complete
in Christ. And then let me stop with this
one last verse here. This one last thing. Oh my goodness,
I preached too long. What a day of blessed, blessed
experience. Isn't that verse 30 again? Make atonement for you. And listen
to this. of what a day of blessed experience
to cleanse you that you may be cleaned from all your sins. How many of them? All of them. By blood and by being carried
away and our Lord said blessed is the man to whom I impute not
iniquity. And he said, I'll pour my spirit
upon you and I'll cleanse you from all your sins. And this
is where it counts. May be cleaned from all your
sins. And listen to that, it says in almost all these verses,
cleanse from all your sins, where it counts, before the Lord. When God looks at you, If you're
in Christ and you trust in Christ, you know what he sees? He sees
Christ. He don't see no sin. Me and you
do, but he don't. He don't. Oh, what a gospel. What a gospel. What a gospel.
