And cried unto him, Of course
Jesus went thence, and departed into the coast of Tyre and Siloam.
And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coast, and
cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, son of David. My daughter is grievously vexed
with the devil. But he answered her not a word.
And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away, for
she crieth after us. But he answered and said, I am
not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel. Then
came she and worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me. But he answered and said, It
is not meet, it is not fit, that I should take the children's
bread and cast it to dogs. And she says, Truth, Lord. See
that word truth is capitalized? She is speaking to him who is
truth, entitled by our Lord Jesus Christ, I am the Way and I am
the Truth. She said, Truth, Lord, yet the dogs eat of the crumbs
which fall from their master's table. Then the Lord answered
and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith, be it unto thee
even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole
from that very hour. faith, what a glorious thing
faith is. Without faith, it's impossible
to please God. By faith, Abraham, when he was
tried, offered up Isaac and received him again from the dead as an
offering. By faith, Moses, when he was
come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's And over in Hebrews it says,
talking about God's people, "...who through faith subdued kingdoms,
wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths
of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of
the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in
fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens." By faith, women
received the dead, raised to life again. Others were tortured,
not accepting deliverance, and others had trial of cruel mockings
and scourging, yea, moreover, of bonds and imprisonments. They
were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with
the sword. They wondered about as sheepskins and goatskins,
being destitute, afflicted, tormented. of whom the world was not worthy.
They wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens, and
in caves of the earth, and these all having obtained a good report
through faith." Now, here our Lord Jesus gives a good report
of a woman, and not only just her faith, but He says, "...great
is thy faith, great is thy faith." Now, I don't believe any of us
here. I, you know, I wouldn't anyway. I wouldn't lay claim to great
faith. I just wouldn't. None of us would say they have
all the faith that they desire. Do you have all the faith you
desire? Are you as strong in faith as you'd like to be? But let's look together at this
time, at this woman of great faith, this woman here that our
Lord says, great is thy faith. Do you know she had lots of obstacles
thrown in her way? But I'll tell you what, I said,
what made it great faith? What made it great faith? Why
did our Lord say, great is thy faith to this woman? Oh, woman,
don't tell us her name. You know, a lot of women in the
Scriptures had names. Ruth had a name. Sarah had a
name. Mary Martha had a name. Mary
Magdalene had a name. Priscilla had a name. The Lord's mother had a name. You have all these women with
names. But here's a woman that our Lord didn't even give a name.
And yes, she had great faith. Great faith. I'd rather be known
somebody had faith than see if I ever know my name. The Lord, He never mentioned
her name. I don't care who she is, as long as she had faith.
Oh, she had faith. What caused this woman to have
great faith? First of all, it was great faith
because it came from a great sinner. It came from a great
sinner. Down here in verse 21, when our
Lord departed into the coast of Tyre and Simon, now this is
a place that God, oh, He said awful things about this in the
Old Testament, Tyre and Simon. And He said, and behold, a woman
of Canaan came out of the same coast. Now, a woman of Canaan
was a woman who had come from a cursed generation. You know,
it was the Canaanites that God drove out before Israel and took,
they went in and destroyed the Canaanites and took And I want
you to look with me over here in Genesis, just a moment. I
believe it's chapter 6. I believe it's chapter 6. It
may be before that, but let me look and see right quick. In
Genesis chapter 6. No, not 6. Let me find it here,
just a second. Alright, here we are, Genesis
chapter 9. And it says here in verse 20, And
Noah began to be a husband, and he planted a vineyard. And he
drank of the wine, and was drunk, and he was uncovered within his
tent. And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of
his father, and told his two brethren without. And Shem and
Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon their shoulders, and
went backward, and covered the nakedness of their fathers. And
their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness.
And Noah woke from his wine, and knew what his youngest son
had done unto him. Now watch this, and he said,
Cursed be Canaan, a servant of service shall he be unto his
brethren. So she came, first of all, from
a cursed generation. She came from her father. Her
beginning of her race, beginning of her people, was cursed by
Noah himself. And she came from a condemned
race, God said destroy it. And over in Ephesians 2.11, I
want you to see this. I've quoted this so many times,
but you need to see this. Ephesians 2.11. And here's what
she was. The reason it made her face great
was because it came from a great sinner. It came from somebody
that was cursed. It came from somebody that had
no hope. It came from somebody, that beloved, that was condemned
already. A Gentile woman, a Canaanitish
woman. Cursed to be Canaan. God says,
destroy the Canaanites. He said, when there's a horde
before the Canaanites. And it came from a people who
had no promise, no prophet, ever had any gospel preached to them.
Look what it says in verse 11, Ephesians 2, Wherefore remember
that ye in time past, Gentiles in the flesh, who are called
uncircumcision. That means you're filthy in your
flesh. You're filthy before God. You have no part of the covenant.
But that which is called the circumcision, the sign of the
covenant, in the flesh bathed by hands, that at that time,
you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth
of Israel, strangers from the covenants of promise, having
no hope, and without God in the world. Now, that's the kind of
woman that came here to the Lord Jesus Christ. She had worshipped
idols. All the Canaanites worshipped
idols. They worshipped Astaroth. They worshipped Baal. They worshipped
so many different gods. And yet, the Scriptures tell
us He came to save, to call sinners to Himself. So that's the first
reason it was called, the Lord called it great faith, because
He came from a great sinner. I'll tell you a second reason
He called it great faith, because of where it originated at. Do
you know where she got her faith? She wasn't born with it. She
wasn't born with it. Why did she start seeking the
Lord? Why did she start seeking the Lord? I'm going to tell you
why. Look again with me. I want you
to look at two places in Ephesians 2. Ephesians 2, with me right
quick. And there's another one I've
quoted so many times, and you can quote it yourself, but we
need to look at it because, you know, her faith, it came from
God. You know, 2 Thessalonians 3 and 2 says this, that all men
have not faith. Now, a lot of people think that
they're born with faith, and preachers tell them they're born
with faith. All you've got to do is exercise it. Nobody's got
faith until God gives it to them. Nobody's got any faith to talk
until it comes from God. a natural faith, we don't have
any problem having faith in ourselves, and in our abilities, or in our
church membership, or in our baptism, or in a profession we
made sometime years ago. But to actually have faith, to
look to Christ and Christ alone, to look to the Lord Jesus Christ,
and come to Him with all the obstacles that's in the way,
with our flesh, with the false worship, with the idols we worship,
to be able to come to God and seek Him for mercy, that originates
with God Himself. It don't start with us. It don't
start with the church. It don't start with the preacher.
It don't start with doctrine. It starts with what God does
in the heart of a sinner. Ephesians 2a says this, for by
grace are you saved. Through faith, and that not of
yourselves, what's this? It's the gift of God. Not of
works. If you was born with faith, you'd
call it a work. Lest any man should boast. If
you had faith and all you had to do was exercise, you'd say,
well, it's my faith that made me the difference, till God gives
it to you. For we are His workmanship. Created in Christ Jesus unto
good works which God hath before ordained, that we should walk
in them. So God gave us this faith. Now
turn that over to Philippians chapter 1. Turn that over to
your right, just a couple of pages. Philippians chapter 1. By His own will begat he us. Begat he us. O be ready tonight,
them that are born of God. God is love, and them that are
born of God are born of love. Look here in verse 29, Philippians
chapter 1, for unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ
Not only to believe on Him, give Him to you to believe on Him,
but also to suffer for Him. You know what? Who made her to
differ from all the Canaanites in town? There was a lot of Canaanite
women around there. There was a lot of Canaanite
men. But this was woman, she came to Christ. Why? Because
God gave her faith. To as many as were ordained to
eternal life, what did they do? They believed. Huh? They believe
faith is a gift of God. Faith is an operation of God
in a man's heart. And it's put in a man's heart
by the power of God. It's the sovereign gift of God.
You remember where Isaiah says, you know, Isaiah is very bold. He said, I was found of them
that sought me not. I was asked of them who sought
me not. I mean, I was found of them who
wasn't even looking for me. This one of them right here.
Oh, beloved, why do you think he went into this area of Tyre
and Sidon? He had a sheep there, a lost
sheep, and he has to bring that sheep to the fold. She's seeking
the Lord because the Lord Jesus Christ first saw the earth. If
men think faith is easy and everyone has it, why then don't more men
believe? Why then don't more men come
and understand the Bibles? Why then don't more people come
and throw themselves on the mercy of God? Well, I tell you why
they don't, because preachers tell them that they've got the
power in themselves, so they don't need to come in faith until
they get ready to come in faith. But you try to believe without
God. Try to believe without God. You know why you believe? As
old Tom Ivers said, one time you believe because you can't
help but believe. Now, you try to stop believing if you can.
Once God gives you that faith, can you stop it? Can you quit
believing? Can you not believe? Well, oh my Lord, no, but we
say, Lord, have I unbelieved? And I'll tell you another reason
why it's great faith. Back over here in our text in
Matthew 15. I'll tell you another reason why the Lord called it
great faith, because it agrees with the truth. Down there in
verse 24, the Lord Jesus, He answered her. She said, Oh Lord,
I need your mercy. I need your mercy. And He answered
her in verse 24, I'm not sent but unto the lost sheep of the
house of Israel. I'm not sent to save Israel. There's some
lost sheep here in Israel. Descendants of Jacob. Jacob whom
I loved. And I'm not sent but unto them.
And he confronted her with sovereign election. I'm not sent to everybody. I'm not sent to save everybody.
I'm not sent to redeem everybody. I'm not sent to call everybody.
I'm not sent to make salvation possible for everybody. I got
an email from a man yesterday who was looking at sermon audio,
read an article, and he wrote to tell me, he said, you know,
that my view of God's love and how God saves sinners and that
was all wrong. And that, you know, he was confused
by it, so I wrote him back. I know why he's confused by it.
I said, all you got to do is read John chapter 10, said he
laid down his life for the sheep, and you go to verse 26, and he
says, you know why you don't believe? He said, tell us if
you be the Christ. Tell us plainly. He said, I told you, and you
believe not. And you know why you don't believe? Because you're
not of my sheep. And he wrote me back and I got
to looking at it. He don't even believe in the
deity of Christ. He does not even believe in the
divinity of Christ. I should have saved my time if
I had any idea. He's that much of an idiot, I
wouldn't even answer this question. He's just one of those fellas
that just wants to fight, wants to argue, show how much he knows.
He don't care what you believe. He wants you to know what he
believes. But here this Lord Jesus, our Savior, confronted
her, I'm not sent but to the lost sheep of Israel. I've got no quarrel with election.
That's what she says. Lord, you say whom you will.
You go get your lost sheep. You get every single one of them.
And oh, I'll be like, look what happened. Look what happened. And what did she do? Oh, my. He said down in verse 26, oh,
she put these It agrees with truth. And he answered me and
said, it's not me, it's not fit, it's not worthy, it's not right
that I should take the children's bread and to cast it to dogs. Oh my! True faith, as you know. And he told her she was a dog.
And that the children's bread is for the children. His elect,
his people, the children of God. And it's not fit to take and
cast it to dogs. And that's what they called them,
Gentile dogs. Now, beloved, he confronted her
sovereign election, yet she still cried, that Lord, and she came
in verse 25 and worshipped and said, Lord, help me. Then she
said, oh, listen, it's not right that I should take the children's
bread. True faith, now listen to me now, true faith doesn't
know everything, and it don't have to, but it agrees with the
truth when it's confirmed with it. Anybody that fights with the
truth when they're confronted with it, it's a dead giveaway
that they're not the sheep. It's like a thief on the cross.
You reckon a thief on the cross knew anything about total depravity? You reckon he understood election,
unconditional election? You reckon he understood particular
redemption? Irresistible grace? Perseverance
of the saints? Well, of course you did. But
Christ regenerated him, revealed himself to him, and saved him
there on the cross. But I'll tell you this much,
had he come down from that cross and heard the gospel, it would
mean everything he heard as he heard it in Christ. Now ain't
that right? Ain't you grateful that's the
way God does it? A man don't have to know everything.
All he's got to do is he's got to know Christ and throw himself
entirely on Christ. And when he does that, then God
will start teaching him. Then God will start opening his
eyes. How's it? Wasn't your daddy there about two years meeting
up to stick him in the ground? That's the way we was when God
first come to Christ. And this woman didn't know it.
She said, yes, oh Lord, you say who you want to. And that's the way this woman
was. She did not understand these
things, but when she heard it, she didn't fight it. She said,
that's not fair. She didn't go up ahead and say, since
you're going to save only your sheep, I'm just going to turn
around and go to the house. I'm going to give up. That's what a preacher come told
me one time, said one of his church members quit because she
read a newspaper article that was on the sovereign election,
and that God didn't love everybody. He comes and says, you know what,
David, you done with that? That somebody's gonna quit because
they didn't like what you said about the love of God? I said,
that's her problem, it ain't mine. It amazes me that God loves anybody. And it reared us to, how can
it be, how can it be that now my God should die for me? Was it for me He is wounded,
bleeding, blind and unhealing, going to Calvary for me? And
that's what this woman, she had a need. She wasn't going to stop.
And she was out confronted with truth. And she never thought
up her head and said, well, if that's the way you feel about
it, I'll just quit. If you call me a dog, I ain't
gonna be called a dog. You can call me anything you
want to, but I ain't gonna be called a dog. But, oh, beloved, that's why
the Scriptures tells us, you know, everyone that hath heard
and hath learned of the Father cometh unto me. Ain't that what
it says? Huh? And, oh, beloved, my sheep hear
my voice, and I know them. And they know. She heard the
voice of Christ here. No, it's not right to take the
children's prayer and throw it to dogs. Now, oh my. I'll tell
you another reason why. Not only because it comes from
God, from a great sinner. And it agrees with the truth.
But here's another reason why our Lord called it a great thing.
Because of its object. And she cried unto Him. Look
down in verse 22. She, behold, a woman of Canaan,
that came out of the same coast, and cried unto Him. Cried unto
Him. That's the key. Cried unto Him. That's who we cry to. We cry
to Him. Cry unto the Lord Jesus Christ.
Cry to Him. Who else are we going to cry
to? Who else is going to hear us?
Who else can be touched with the feelings of our infirmities?
And she cried unto him, saying, Have mercy! Mercy on me! O Lord! Son of David! Son of David! And verse 25, Then she came and
worshipped him, saying, Lord, help me! Help me! Help me, Lord! Help me! O Beloved! No one else to whom she could
go. There was no other door at which
she could knock. She knew who he was. Oh, Lord,
you son of David. You know, God told David, he
said, David, you remember in Chronicles and Samuel, he said,
I'm going to, David, I'm going to set somebody on your throne
forever. Somebody's going to have your
throne forever. I'm going to establish your king
forever. I'm going to build you a house, David. You're not going
to build me one. I'm going to build you one. I'm
going to establish my covenant with you forever." And they understood
that the Messiah would come as far as his kingship would be,
and the flesh would be of the Son of David. Now, here's a Gentile
woman. Here's a woman who's a heathen,
and she says, You're the Messiah. You're the son of David. You're
the one that God promised that He would establish your throne
forever and ever and ever. Huh? Oh, she understood that
He would be the one who would buy our griefs and carry our
sorrows, that He'd be in touch with the fillings of our infirmities.
And oh, my, the cause of its object. And don't ever forget
this. She cried unto Him. Verse 25, Then came she, and
worshipped him. Come to him, worshipped him,
came for mercy, came for help. And then that's another reason
why it's a great faith. Not because of its object, which
is the Lord Jesus. You cried unto Him. Cried unto
Him. That's what we tell folks. Call
on the Lord. Seek the Lord. Cry unto the Lord. Cast yourself
on the Lord. And then, because it's great
faith, because of its request, first of all, she said, have
mercy on me, O Lord. Have mercy on me. How many times
does that cry come from our hearts over the years? Not only for
ourselves, but for somebody else. Just have mercy. Just have mercy. Just have mercy. And that's all
she asked for, was mercy. Mercy. And, oh, look what she
says. My daughter, my daughter is grievously vexed,
and she has the devil. And, Lord, I'm interested to
do anything about it. That's not a thing in the world I can
do. I can't do anything for her. I love her. I cry over her. I watch her. I protect her. And Lord, I'm in it to do anything. And thank God. And she said in
verse 25, then she came in worship and said, Lord, help me. But
thank God for a gospel of mercy where God said, I will have mercy. I will have mercy. I will have
it. I'll show mercy. And because
she said, Lord, help me, help me. And it's great because not only
of its object and what it requests, but it's because of its contrast
to the Jews. You look at the scribes and the
Pharisees' faith. Look what our Lord Jesus Christ
said down here in verse 3. He asked his disciples, why do
you also, they asked him, why do your disciples transgress
the commandment of God by your tradition? See, they was interested
in tradition. She is interested in truth. What
else is said here? Our Lord told these Pharisees,
verse 7, you hypocrites. Well, as Isaiah prophesied, he
was saying, this people draweth now unto me with their mouth,
honors me with their lips, but their hearts far from me. And
in vain they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments
of men. Oh, my. Look at their faith. Same faith as traditional faith,
vain faith. They were Jews. They had everything.
They had Moses. They had the prophets. They had
the ceremonies. They had the tabernacles. They
had the sacrifices. They had the priests. They had
the scriptures. She had nothing. She was a Gentile. And yet they didn't believe. They was worried about unwashing
hands. She'd come to seek mercy. They
bragged about their merit. She bowed to truth. They worried
about tradition. She vowed to the truth. They
were concerned with the outward and the external. What they ate
and what they didn't eat. They were vain worshippers. She
was a true worshipper. They talked about the Lord. She
believed the Lord. And they were offended. And you
know, if anybody should have been offended, she should have
been. I'm not sent to the lost sheep. I'm not going to catch
the children's bread under dogs. Look what it says here in verse
12. Then came his disciples and said unto him, Noah's fowl that
the Pharisees were offended after they heard this say. What did
he tell them? He said, it's not what you eat
that's going to defile you. It's not what you take with your
hands and put in your mouth. That's not what's going to defile
you. He said, it's what comes out of here that's what defiles
you. And he answered and said unto them, He answered and said,
Every plant which my heavenly Father hath not planted shall
be rooted up. Let them alone. They be blind, the leaders of
the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into
the ditch. Oh my. They were offended. She believed and was blessed.
And look what the apostle says to her. Oh my, what a contrast
there. Look what the apostle says to
her then, verse 23. But he answered her not a word, and his disciples
came and besought him, saying, Send her away, for she crieth
after us." Now, it doesn't say anything about she cried after
us. She cried unto him, and she came and worshiped him. She was persistent. Send her
away. Where's their faith in him? If
she saved them and had mercy on them, why didn't they ask
her, Lord, hear this poor woman? Don't you hear this woman crying
to you? Don't you hear her asking for mercy? Don't you hear her
asking for help? Don't you hear her talking about her daughters?
Oh no, they were selfish. We need time for ourselves. But
she wasn't crying after them. She cried unto Him. She was crying
after the Lord. He was the only one who could
help her. Let me give you another reason why it was a great, great
faith here. Because of his perseverance. And look at all the obstacles.
He said he answered her, not a word. Here is the word, the living
word. Spoke not a word. And he answered it. And then
when she kept asking him, and she kept crying, and they saw
him. Then when he answered her, he
put her off. I'm not sent but to the lost
sheep of the house of Israel. He put her off. The harder she
came, then she came and worshipped him. After she said, I'm not
sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel, then she came
and worshipped him. You know, that's a tough thing. You may
not be one of God's elect. You may not be one for whom I
came to save. I know I'm going to save the
sheep, you know. I'm only seeking the lost sheep. There ain't but
two kinds of sheep, those that's found and in the fold, those
that's still lost. He said, I'm going through Israel. That's
what we're on. We're on the trail of God's sheep. Brother Henry
brought a message on that years and years ago. I'm on the trail
of God's sheep. And we are. We are. I mean, the Pharisees were proud. We're God's people. That's what
they told it. He said, we be Abraham's seed.
We've been the children of Abraham. Our Lord said, if you were the
children of Abraham, you'd do the works of Abraham. And he
said, if you're of your father, the devil in the works of your
father you're going to do. When he talked about election,
they got mad about it. We're Abraham's children. When
she heard about election, she worshipped him. And then he called her a dog.
It's not me to take the children's bread and pass it to dogs. Anybody here? You know, I had
a movie years ago, a little old movie for kids called, All Dogs
Go to Heaven. Really, they do. Scriptural dogs
get to go to heaven. You know that? You look at how
many times they're called dogs in the scriptures. Well, Mephibosheth
was a dog. David called himself a dog, and
the Lord called this woman a dog. Oh, my. Oh, my. She owned being a dog, but look
what she said. Truth, Lord. It don't bother me being called
a dog. Oh, she owned being a dog, but
I'm your dog. Truth Lord, get the dogs eat
of the crumbs which fall from their master's table. You're
the master. It's your table. It's your food. Go ahead and feed your children.
Go ahead and feed your children. But I'll take the crumbs that
fall off the table if you just give me a crumb. That's all I
want, just a crumb. Just a crumb. Huh? And the disciple's
attitude, she cries after us, yet she kept on persevering,
calling on the Lord. And I tell you, wouldn't you? Yes, Lord, that's the truth.
Yet the dogs, everything you said is truth about you going
to save your sheep. It's truth that it's not right
for you to give the children's bread to dogs. That's the truth. Yet the dogs, the dogs eat. of the crumbs which fall from
their master's table. And that's what she said was,
I'll just, I'll stay right here under the table. I don't care
where you put me, I don't care how you do it. And I'll take
what, everybody, give it to everybody else, just let me have the crumbs
fall from the table. You know, these things really
happened, you know, they had dogs, just little old bitty dogs
that hung around, you know, and when food would fall off the
table and things like that, the dog would just run and grab it.
And that's what she understood, that's it, you know, about dogs.
And she said, well, you know, even the dogs get the crumbs. And, oh my, truth, Lord. See how she said, paparazzi,
everything you say is truth. Then the Lord answered her. And
finally, He's going to say something good. First, He answered her
not a word. Then when he said, I answered
the first time, I'm not shit to the lost sheep of the house
of Israel. Second time he answered, says not meat to take the children's
bread and give it to dogs. Then answered her and said unto
her, O woman, great is thy faith. Be it unto thee even as thou
will. And her guard was made whole from that very house. And
I tell you, it's great faith because of this result. He answered
her. Now listen. He answered her. Be it unto thee
as you will. You will for your daughter to
have, you will for mercy, you will for health, you will for
your daughter to be made whole. You will for that. You will to
have mercy? I'm going to give you mercy.
You will to eat from my table? You'll eat from my table. You
will to worship me? You'll worship me. And her daughter
was made whole. from that very hour. Let me give
you four things here real quickly, if I can. Our Lord's word to
her was a very, very comforting word. Woman, great is thy faith. Be it unto thee even as thy will.
Your daughter, and her daughters, made hope from that. Oh, woman
is a commending word. He commended her and said, Oh,
woman, great is thy faith. He didn't say that to any of
his disciples. He didn't say that to any of
them. He didn't say, great is your sin. He didn't say, great
is your noise. Great is your works. No, he said,
great is your faith. And not only did he commend her,
but he sent a commanding word. He said, be it unto thee. He
didn't say, now I'd like to do this for you,
if. He said, no, he gave a command, be it unto thee. Be it unto thee. The King is speaking. The King
is giving a command. And then, beloved, it was a complying
Word. He complied with her request
for mercy, for healing, for help. He complied with her request. Her faith touched Him. Now He'll
touch her by His Word. And it is a Word that's complete.
It is a completing Word. Her daughter was made whole from
that very hour. And that very hour, before she
got home, her daughter, she got home, Mary had her daughter.

Thank you for your blood. Thank you for your grace and
