Psalms 89, verse number 19. Now, who's the Psalms about? Christ,
isn't it? They're about Christ. So as we would read this Psalm,
our minds should go to the Lord Jesus Christ. And I'll read verse
number 19. And then it says, Then thou speakest
in a vision to thy holy one, and saith, I have laid help upon
one that is mighty. I have exalted one chosen out
of the people. I have found David my servant,
and with my holy oil have I appointed him. Now, our minds should run this
morning in the greater sense as it speaks of David to the
Lord Jesus Christ. For He is who the Psalms is about,
it's Christ Jesus. And what we have in this verse
this morning is a mighty helper. Look at it, I have laid help.
God says I have laid help upon one that is mighty. So we have
a mighty helper. He's a chosen one. As we go down
in the next part of the verse, I have exalted one chosen out
of the people. Now what words is this for us
this morning as we would look at it if we was left to ourselves? If there was no help, if there
was no one chosen, we'd sure be stuck, wouldn't we, if we
didn't have any help. if we was left to our very selves. Because the Bible speaks of ourselves
and that of our state as lost by nature, as helpless by nature. So we have the Lord Jesus Christ
and Isaiah sets Him forth. And you remember the statement
of Isaiah talks about a child born and a son given. And it
goes on calls His name the Mighty God. The Mighty God. So that's who we have, the Lord
Jesus Christ. First of all, let's look this
morning in the portion of the Scripture here that says, I have
exalted one chosen out of the people. Now, David was a chosen
one. But again, as I said a while
ago, he was a type of the Lord Jesus Christ. He was chosen out
of the people, and as we look at this concerning the Lord Jesus
Christ, He was out of the people also, and this speaks of His
manhood, is what it speaks of, the man, Christ Jesus. We look
at Him by birth. He was one of the people, wasn't
He? We see His lowly birth, that He came into the world. We see
Him growing up in the carpenter's house, and we see Him in that
of His very life. But we also know this, that He
is chosen. The Father chose Him to be the
people's salvation. He is the people's Christ. And
it wasn't an angel that God chose, but it was the Lord Jesus Christ. And it was Christ, we see His
manhood, because it was man that sinned, wasn't it? And it was
man to die. We find that justice required,
it says, by man came death. And the Lord Jesus Christ came
to life. There was resurrection in life
by Christ. The law speaks and it says that
man is a sinner. He's broken God's law. And the
Bible says in Adam all died, but in the second Adam all are
made alive. We see what happened in the fall
in the garden. But we see the Lord Jesus Christ
now at the right hand of the Father. He sits on the throne.
He holds all things in His hands. This man, Christ Jesus. So He's chosen and it says He's
exalted. The Bible speaks and says He's
made a little lower than angels. That's His manhood as He came
into this world. But now He's at the right hand
of the Father. So as we look at Him this morning,
we see that He's in the place of great honor Christ is this
morning. And we are raised in the heavenlies
to sit with Christ Jesus. The Bible says in ages to come
He's going to show the exceeding riches of His grace. So He's
chosen this morning. And when we think about this,
we think of our Lord who we have in heaven. He's chosen. of the
Father. He's our Savior. He's our Lord. And as we see this Chosen One,
we see that in His manhood, He knows our needs. He knows what
it is. He knows our wants. He experienced
this as the Lord Jesus Christ, didn't He? As Christ, as He was
upon the earth. The Bible speaks of him as being
a forerunner. So he came, and he's chosen. We also see our chosen one. We
look at him this morning, and we see his kindness. We see his
compassion. We see his love, how gracious
that he is. And he was taken out of the people,
wasn't he? As it says here in the Scripture,
I've laid help upon him. and chosen Him. He bids us to
come unto Him, He does. And we see how exalted that He
is. Now His people is exalted with
Him. We find that He's exalted in
that of His union with God as the God-man. We find He's exalted
by the resurrection. We look at this and death could
not hold him. He is exalted. He came in humiliation. But we see how that he was raised
from the dead and he went back to heaven. He ascended. So there
is his exaltation this morning. And it says, I have exalted him
that is chosen out of the people. His disciples stood there as
he ascended back into heaven. And I'll tell you something else
this morning, he's exalted as judge as overall. Isn't he? He's exalted this morning as
judge. Woe to all that despise the Lord
Jesus Christ. The Bible says, woe to those
that love not the Lord Jesus Christ. So we see this morning
the election of Christ. He's chosen. We see Him extracted
from the people. He's out of the people. And we
see His exaltation. He's a chosen servant. He is
an appointed servant. He's a mediator of the covenant,
a substitute, a surety of His covenant people. And He is one
that is mighty. He's one with God. And it says
here, He's laid help upon him. He gives us help. He conveys
help to our very souls, to those that could not help themselves,
and that is us this morning. He is the One that is mighty. Turn with me over to Isaiah,
and I want to read you one verse found in Isaiah, the 63rd chapter. And I want you just to notice
this verse. You can get it here, Isaiah 63,
in verse number 1. Who is he that cometh from Eden,
with dyed garments from Boaz? That this is it glorious, that
is glorious in his apparel, traveling in the greatness of his strength.
that speak in righteousness, mighty to save." Now who's that
speaking? That's speaking of Christ, that
He's mighty to save. He's the mighty God. Now, so
there's no doubt this morning that as this speaks to our hearts,
there's the Lord Jesus Christ. It's David's root. It's David's
offspring. It's Christ as we speak of His
human nature. And we look at this help. It
says, "...laid upon Him help, one that is mighty." Now, the
Lord Jesus Christ, and we look at His attributes this morning,
and you think about His attributes, He's always present, isn't He? He's only present. We look at
Him, and He's everywhere. The Old Testament says, I feel
heaven and earth. The Bible says, where two or
three are gathered together in my name, I'll be in the midst
of them. Now that's wherever they are gathered throughout
this world, and everywhere they are gathered, He says, I'll be
in the midst of them, doesn't He? So that's help this morning,
isn't it? I've thought about it, and over
the years, how we look to the Lord, and we can be on one side
of this world, and there's the other side, and we pray, and
the Lord can actually pray on the other side of the world.
He's everywhere. Not only that, that He is everywhere. He knows all things. He knows our hearts. He knows
our thoughts. He knows all things. You read
in the New Testament where they came and they posed different
questions to the Lord Jesus Christ, but He knew what they were thinking. He knew why they were asking
these questions, didn't He? He knew what they was up to.
So He's one that searches the heart, in every heart. He knows
the thoughts. Not only that, but this help
comes from Him who is powerful. He's the Great I Am. You know, we go back in the Old
Testament, and Moses was sent, and Moses says, who shall I tell
them to send me, that has sent me? And the word came, tell them
that I am has sent. You, I am. Speaking of Him as
a self-existent One. Turn with me to the book of John,
chapter number 8, and this is always an interesting verse. Here in 8.56 of John. And we see the Lord Jesus Christ
in verse number 56 down through 58 here. And our Lord stands
before him and he says, Your father Abraham, rejoice to see
my day. Now certainly that tells us of
Christ in the Old Testament and that tells us of Abraham, where
Abraham looked to and where Abraham's faith was. And he said, Your
father Abraham rejoiced to see my day. And he saw it and was glad. Then the Jews said unto him,
Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham.
Now I wonder if the Lord looked older than he did in years. They said, you're not even 50
yet. But let's go on. And has the
eye seen Abraham? So they asked this question. Now notice what he says. Jesus
said unto them, Verily I say unto you, before Abraham was... Now what did he say? I am the
same thing that Moses. And it's the same I am in the
New Testament as it was in Moses today. The Lord Jesus Christ. Over in the book of Revelation,
in chapter number 1, it speaks there, and he goes on, Christ
does, and he says, I'm the first and the last. I'm first and the
last. So that's Christ, the first and
the last. So the Father says here, I have
laid this help. It's my Son. He appeared in the
fashion of man in the form of a servant, but He is the mighty
God. Now, as we look at the New Testament
and we see We see Him in the form of a servant, but who is
He? He's the mighty God. Who is He? He's the mighty Savior. Who is
He? He's the mighty Lord. Now, let's
think about this help for a moment. We needed help. Here's the Lord. We needed His merit. We don't have any merit. When
you look at us, it's demerit. But here's Christ, and there's
the merit of His blood and righteousness, and that's what we needed. It's
of infinite value, His blood and His righteousness. We needed
atonement for our sins, and here's the help. We needed our sins put away.
Here's the help. He fulfilled all. Look at redemption. We needed redeeming. And we see
Him. Here's the help. He's paid in
full. Now, I love that this morning,
that He's paid in full. We couldn't pay. We needed help. But Christ is paid and He's paid
in full. He's the mighty God. So it's
His merit this morning And also in this help He must apply it.
He must apply His help unto us that we know that we have an
interest in Him. That we have a sense this morning
of this union with Him by His Spirit and Word. that He applies
the blessings to our very heart. It's one thing just to read about
the blessings, but it's another thing to know that they apply
to us in our very hearts, in our very beings, to our very
souls. Just take the blessing of pardon. Oh, that we stand before God.
And here's the blessing of it, and know that we stand before
Him. The Bible says, without offense,
Now we needed that, didn't we? Your sins came up as an offense
before God. We needed help. And here's Christ
that we stand before Him without offense. That's the help He gives.
You know, we stand this morning in the Lord Jesus Christ and
there's no charges against us. We needed help to remove the
charges. And we stand this morning. Here's
the help. But there's no charges. Who can charge? Who can charge
God's elect, the Scripture says? We needed help this morning to
be accepted. And the Bible says we accepted
in the Beloved. We needed help this morning to
stand complete. Who is it that helps us? This
one here. He says, I have laid help upon
him. He helps us. We are complete in the Lord Jesus
Christ. And complete! We need help this
morning to stand without any condemnation. Because by the
law we are condemned. And here is one that helps us
stand with no condemnation. The Bible says in Romans 8, verse
1, Therefore now there is no condemnation to those that are
in Christ Jesus. So we look at Him this morning
and all that He did was to help us. We look at His life. We look at His death. We look
at His ascension. We look at all of this and it
was for our help. Christ came and it's all for
us that He did. It was for us. Was that not help this morning?
when He died as a substitute upon the cross. Was that not
help for us? Was that not help for us when
the Bible says He bears sins away in His own body on the tree? Was that not help for us? Oh, this morning, look at it.
His help meets our needs, the needs that we have, and He continues
to help us. We look at it, and we need His
help continually. And He continues to help us,
and His help is one that is mighty. What does He do also? He conveys
the knowledge of salvation to our various souls, to the souls
of His people. The Bible speaks over in the
book of Ephesians, and it talks about the Word of Truth, and
here in the Word of Truth is said the gospel of your salvation. It says, Your salvation. And
that's what He does. He conveys that of our very salvation. So the Gospel is not what you
do, but it's what Christ has done. And He conveys unto us
what He's done for us. I had a conversation this week,
and it was all about the man. It's about God. It's who it's
about. It's about Him. So He conveys
unto us. Now this help. Look at this help. He applies peace. He made peace. Man doesn't make peace, but Christ
makes peace. He's made peace. And He gives
us that peace. The Bible says in the Lord Jesus
Christ said, not as the world gives. It says, I don't give
you peace like the world gives. It's a different peace. It's
a peace of the soul. And let me say this about it
this morning. What He's made doesn't change. You know, we may, but what He's
made doesn't change. See? There's peace, and we want
it applied to our hearts, and sometimes we don't see peace.
But it's still, what He made doesn't change, it's us, isn't
it? Have you ever thought about it? It's us. When He makes peace,
it's made. And His reconciliation is the
same, and it remains the same, whether we feel it or not. It's
the same. He's made it. And what He made
doesn't change. In life, we look at it this morning,
it's important to have peace. Isn't that something this morning
to live in peace? And it'd be my desire. And it's my desire that I live
in peace. It's my desire that you live in peace. You younger
people, that you live your life in peace with God. Isn't that
the best life? Isn't that far better than anything
else? To live in peace and know peace
in God. Enter into that peace and it
be applied to our very hearts. And that's the help that He gives
us, that we might live in peace. Also, He gives help that we might
rest this morning. And there's a rest, and this
is the help that He gives us. Jesus Christ and the Sabbath
is a rest. Now, let me go just a little
further with that this morning. Our Sabbath is Christ. That's our Sabbath, the Scripture
says. He's our Sabbath. He's our rest. It's Christ. It's Him. That's our Sabbath
this morning. And He gives us rest. I'm telling
you this morning, there's no rest in religious activity. A man can be just as religious
as he wants to be, and I don't know how you rest in it. How
would you know if you're religious enough? If you believed in works for
salvation, how would you know this morning if you've worked
enough, if you've done enough? There's no rest in place in these
things. But there's a rest in the Lord
Jesus Christ. He's our Sabbath. He's our rest
this morning. And as we look at Him, we can
rest in Him. We don't rest this morning in
man's doings. I don't rest in my doings. We
rest in Christ. He's the only resting place.
We see people there carried to and fro in every wind of doctrine
that comes there. Go after this for a while and
then go after that. But oh, the old paths walk therein. Walk in these old paths and there's
rest. This morning there's rest in
the Lord Jesus Christ. There's rest this morning. In
those words, it is finished. Now that's a resting place. It
is finished. Christ said it is finished. Do
I add anything to His finished work? Your man says, well, that's
alright, but... He died, but... He paid for our
sins, but... It is finished. That's a resting
place. We can rest this morning in a
complete atonement, an accomplished atonement. We can rest there. We can rest
this morning in this mighty Savior. We can rest this morning in that
He paid it all. There's nothing else owed. When
our Lord Jesus Christ, when He writes, it's cancelled out. I've
paid it. It's cancelled. It's cancelled.
We can rest there. We can rest this morning that
justice has been completely satisfied. God is satisfied with the atonement
of Christ. That's what the atonement means.
Satisfaction. And God's completely satisfied. We can rest this morning for
that law. The Bible says if you're in Christ,
you're dead to the law. And yet there's people who say,
well, if I live by the Ten Commandments, you can't live by the Ten Commandments.
You're a breaker of them. You'll continue to be a breaker
of them. But the Bible says we're dead to the law. We've died. This morning you'd rest in His
intercession. Where is He? You'd rest this
morning that you have one in heaven making the intercession
for you. Isn't that a resting place? There's
one that pleads your case. That one pleads your case in
heaven. You'd rest there. And you can
rest this morning in Him and you can rest on Him because He's
that solid foundation. He's not sand, but a solid foundation. You can rest this morning, you
can rest in Him. He's a sure salvation. You can
rest in Him this morning in His love, an everlasting love. One of the greatest verses in
the Bible to me is that where He says, I've loved you with
an everlasting love. Now that love is an unchanging
love. If God loved you yesterday, He's
going to love you today. If He loves you today, He's going
to love you tomorrow. I'm talking about this everlasting
love that He has for His people, His Jacobs. everlasting, unchangeable. This
morning, you can rest upon Him and His promises. They are all
true. Every promise that He has is
true. We see this help this morning.
Not only does He help us in that of salvation and what He's done,
but He helps us this morning And we need a continuous help
and He's the Mighty One that supports us even after we're
saved. What does He do? He supports
us. There's His everlasting arms, His mighty arms, His strong arms. There's His hand to support us
and He carries His children through. He'll see them through. Please,
not one, leave us. But He's going to see His children
through. He's going to buy them up under trials. They'll undergo
trials. They'll undergo affliction. They'll
undergo infirmities. They'll undergo tribulation. But what does He do? He buys
them up. He'll buy up His people. God
has just helped to quicken us. How often do we need quickening? It's often, isn't it? I do. I
don't know about you, but we need quickening. We need quickening
to hear the Word. We need quickening to study the
Word. We need His quickening, His refreshing. We need Him to
strengthen us. We are weak. To uphold us. There's His help this morning.
Who would we be this morning if He didn't uphold us? Who would
we be? He's also mighty to lift us up.
And we'll not be drowned. And we won't sink. And we won't
be overwhelmed or crushed. He says, fear not, I am with
thee. I will strengthen thee. I will
help thee. I will uphold thee by the right
hand of my righteousness. There's something else this morning
when we talk about, I've laid help upon one that is mighty. There's a greatest trial of all
that's coming. And that is a day when there's
a separation of body and soul. There's a day coming when we
need the help of a mighty God. When we need the help of the
mighty Lord Jesus Christ to minister comfort to us. in that hour,
in that day, to give us light and peace and be near unto us. The psalmist says, my flesh and
my heart faileth, but God is the strength of my heart. He's
the strength of my heart. The psalmist said, though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death, I'll fear no evil,
for Thou art with me. Paul says, I know whom I have
believed. There is His help. He receives
our spirit unto Himself. So here is the mighty God in
this help that He has. And let me go just a little step
further than that. The Bible says, all in the graves
shall hear His voice and shall come forth. Doesn't it? That's what it says. So He's
going to take not only the soul, but the body. Bring it forth in the resurrection
for all eternity, and it will be a glorious body, fashioned
like unto the Lord Jesus Christ. So in all of this, we see Him
as the Mighty. It says, I laid help upon one
that is mighty. Here's the Mighty God. His mighty
power. He's going to manifest that one
day. He's going to say, come, you
blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom which I have prepared
for you from the foundation of the world. So this morning there's
a great difference in having this help, having Christ, and
being without Christ. Can you see the difference in
having a mighty Savior? Having this mighty God? and being
without Him, there's a great difference. One more thing we
learned from this text this morning, and it's used and it's recorded
in the Bible in several places. That is right here, Lord help
me. That's a short little sentence,
but how powerful it is this morning. Lord, help me. Zaret, Abel. Do you ever cry out, Lord, help
me? There's times, all kinds of different circumstances, all
kinds of situations. Lord, help me. That's a short
prayer, but it's a powerful prayer. We have one in New Testament
coming. Christ said, Lord, help me. I can't help but think of
the thief on the cross. He cried out, Lord, help me,
didn't he? Oh, just this little short prayer. How short it is. It enters into
the ears of a mighty one. It enters into the ears of a mighty One. Lord, help me. Let us pray. Father, take the
message. We're thankful that You presented
unto us and how You presented in the Scripture unto us that
You have laid help, that Christ is our help in this life. He's our help for our souls He's
our help for this life that Thou has given us. And we're thankful that He's
mighty. He's mightier than any foes. He's mightier than anything
that should come. He's more mighty than all. Our great Lord. And we're thankful
this morning that You've chosen Him You've chosen a people in
Him and also that you have exalted Him. And we know also that His
people are being exalted in Him as He's exalted. Even right now,
the Bible says seated in the heavens with Him. We're seated
there in Him. So we thank You for what You've
done for us. Bless the message this morning.
May it be implanted in our hearts by Thy Spirit of the Lord Jesus
Christ. May, as we go through life, may
we use this short prayer, precious prayer, powerful prayer, Lord
help me. How often we need and we need
Thy help every day. Help us, we pray, in Christ's
name, amen.
