In Luke, the eighth chapter,
our Lord Jesus is on his way to the house of Jairus, a ruler
of the synagogue. He's going there to perform a
miracle of mercy upon this man's daughter who was at the point
of death. No doubt, word had hurriedly got around about what
took place in Gadara, and therefore Jairus ran to meet the master. He fell down at his feet and
begged him to come to his house and heal his daughter. As they
went along, the crowds just kind of gathered. Folks from everywhere
came around to see what was going on. You can imagine the commotion,
the talk, the din of noise. Let's pick up in verses 41 and
42 of Luke chapter 8. Behold, there came a man named
Jairus. And he was a ruler of the synagogue.
And he fell down at Jesus' feet and besought him, begged him
that he would come into his house. For he had only one daughter,
about 12 years old, and she lay a dying. But as he went, the
people thronged him. Again, you can imagine the excitement
of the crowd. Here's a man who has told men
that he is the Messiah, God's Messiah, the Christ promised
in the Old Testament. Told men that he is God the Son,
incarnate God in human flesh. Everyone's aware of the claim.
There's no mistaking that. But now he has begun to back
up his claim by doing things that no one could do but God
Almighty. He substantiates his claim as
God in flesh, as the Messiah, that one of whom it was spoken
concerning he would raise the dead, that one of whom the scriptures
said he would cause men who are lame to walk. And our Lord Jesus
now has begun to substantiate those claims by doing exactly
what the prophet said the Messiah would do. In Gadara, the devils
themselves were publicly compelled to acknowledge him as God the
Son. The devils themselves spoke through
the voice of a man and spoke of him as the Christ, the son
of the living God, their Lord, their sovereign master. And now
he's going to heal a young girl, one whose father was a prominent
citizen in the community, not just an ordinary Joe, but he
was a ruler of the synagogue. And now the synagogue was Place
not just a local church place where folks got together and
met like we do But in those days in the Jewish community the synagogue
was the center of everything and this ruler was known prominently
throughout the area His little girl was at the point of death
and the Lord Jesus said to Jairus It'd be alright He said it'd
be alright only believe Just believe. And he's going to heal
his daughter. Everybody wanted to see the miracle.
They followed him as closely as possible. Everybody wanted
to get just as close as they could. Everyone was excited,
curious, filled with anticipation. But there was one person in the
crowd different from all the others. There was one poor, weak,
dying, desperately needy soul. who had concluded in herself
that as the Lord Jesus passed by her, if she couldn't touch
him, if she couldn't get in contact with him, she was soon to die. And she said, if I can just touch
the hem of his garment, I'll be made whole. So as the crowd
moves along, this poor, bent, anemic woman, one who was plagued
with an issue of blood for 12 long, tormenting years, made
her way through the crowd. As I read the accounts of this
story, I try to picture in my mind what's going on. Here's
a woman. who knows she cannot be seen
in the streets because she's unclean. She has no right by
law to even be in the streets. She's defiled and everything
she touches is defiled. But she's dying. She's dying. If she violates the law, she
might be put to death. But if she doesn't come near
and touch the Son of God, she says she will surely die. As
the hymn writer put it, she said, I can but perish if I go. I am
resolved to try for if I stay away, I know I must forever die. She has heard about the Lord
Jesus and no one else has been able to help her. She tried everything
imaginable. She spent all that she had on
physicians of no value and was nothing better, but only grew
worse. Yet she believed that Jesus of Nazareth is indeed the
Christ, the Son of God. And she said within herself,
if I could just touch him, if I could just touch the hem of
the garment he's wearing, I'm sure I would be made completely
whole. So she crawled through the crowd, crawled down between people's
legs, trying to make her way to him. Finally, she got close. And with weak, trembling hand,
she touched him. She touched him. And immediately,
she was healed, just like that life flowed from him into her. The Lord Jesus then stopped dead
in his tracks, for he perceived that virtue, power, efficacy
had gone out of him to someone. And he turned around and said,
who touched me? The disciples, I'll paraphrase,
they said, you've got to be kidding. With all these people around
you, and you ask who touched you? Everybody's touched you.
Everybody's been pushing up against you. And the master said, but
somebody touched me. Somebody touched me. Now let's
read the story, beginning at verse 43. And the woman having
an issue of blood twelve years, which spent all her living upon
physicians, neither could be healed of any, came behind him
and touched the border of his garment, and immediately her
issue of blood was stopped. And Jesus said, Who touched me?
When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master,
the multitude thronged thee, and pressed thee, and sayest
thou, Who touched me? And Jesus said, somebody hath
touched me. For I perceive that virtue is
gone out of me. And when the woman saw that she
was not hid, she came trembling and falling down before him.
Remember, she has violated the law. She has violated the law. She came an unclean person to
touch one who was clean purposefully. One whom she knew to be the Christ
of God. She came trembling and falling
down before him, and she declared unto him before all the people
for what cause she had touched him and how she was healed immediately. And he said unto her, daughter,
be of good comfort. Thy faith hath made thee whole. Go in peace. Now as this poor
woman was immediately healed of her plague when she touched
the Lord Jesus, so sinners are freed from the curse of God's
law, freed from the guilt of sin as soon as they touch the
Son of God by faith. As we look at these verses tonight
and consider the events here recorded by Inspiration, I want
to call your attention to five things. I'll give you five words
and they're easy to remember. The curse, then the crowd, the
cure, then the confession, and then the consolation. Now because
Mark gives a much more detailed account of this event, we will
pick up several things that Mark says that Luke has left out and
put them together for the message. First in verse 43, we see that
this woman was plagued with the curse. She has an issue of blood
12 years. She had spent all her living
upon physicians, neither could be healed of any. Mark puts it
this way. She had suffered many things
of many physicians. That's a pretty good way to describe
it. She had suffered at the hands of those who claimed to be able
to heal her. When she had spent everything
she had, they were done with her, and she was nothing bettered,
but rather grew worse. Now, this is an undeniable fact. There is no greater evidence
of the total depravity of all human beings by nature than the
fact that we all incur disease, we all get sick, and we all die. All sickness, all disease, all
death is the result of sin. All sickness, all disease, all
death is the result of God's curse upon Adam's fallen race
because of sin. Now the universality of man's
depravity. is demonstrated, the universality
of man's sin is demonstrated by the universality of sickness,
disease, and death. Sickness, disease, and death
know no boundaries of age, culture, society, or education. Sickness, disease, and death
come upon all men from infancy in the womb until a man's an
old man. These things are common to men.
This woman's sin, or this woman's sickness rather, was a specific
example of sin. Turn back to Leviticus 15. I
want you to see this. Her sickness was a specific example
of the curse of God's law that is upon us all by nature. Her
sickness, her increasing and unceasing issue of blood was
something that made her ceremonially unclean. And so it is with us. We are plagued within. The prophet
calls it a plague of the heart. The plague of sin makes us unclean. And being unclean, we are cursed.
Being unclean, we are barred and banned from the Holy Lord
God. Look what the Holy Spirit tells
us about this woman. She had an issue of blood for
12 years. Now here in Leviticus 15 verse
19, the law of God reads, If woman
have an issue, and her issue in her flesh be blood, she shall
be put apart seven days. And whosoever toucheth her shall
be unclean until the evening. And everything that she lieth
upon in her separation shall be unclean." Everything she touches.
Everything also that she sitteth upon shall be unclean. And whosoever
toucheth her bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in
water, and be unclean until the evening. And whosoever toucheth
anything that she sat upon shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself
in water, and be unclean until the evening. And if it be on
her bed, or on anything whereon she sitteth, when he toucheth
it, he shall be unclean until the evening. And if any man lie
with her at all, and her flowers be upon him, he shall be unclean
seven days. And all the bed whereon he lieth
shall be unclean. Verse 25. Now here we get specifically
to this woman. And if a woman hath an issue
of blood many days, twelve years. Twelve years. Doesn't mean that
she was constantly bleeding for twelve years. But there was no
cessation to her bleeding. She just, she'd bleed and go
to the doctor and think maybe she was cured and she'd bleed
and bleed and bleed and bleed for 12 years. Pale, ash, death
written across her face, unclean. Read it. If a woman have an issue
of blood many days out of the time of her separation, or if
it run beyond the time of her separation, all the days of the
issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation
she shall be unclean. For twelve years she had been
forbidden to go anywhere in public among the Jews. For 12 years,
she had been forbidden to go to the synagogue, the house of
worship. For 12 years, she had been isolated, barred from society
because she was unclean. This uncleanness was a disabling
sickness as well. She's now bent and weak and dying. And this poor soul had spent
all her living upon physicians of no value. As I said, Mark
tells us she had suffered many things of many physicians. She had been to every doctor
in town. including the quacks, the charlatans, the snake oil
herbalist, the faith healer. She'd been everywhere. Everybody
who even pretended to have any kind of cure, she was in desperation. She was dying. And no one was
able to help her. So wherever anyone pretended
to be able to help, she went and gave him what he required,
and she found his medicine and had some hope, only to have her
hope dashed to pieces. Oh, what a picture this is of
men and women running here and there in religion. A man who
senses the guilt of his sin, who senses the curse of God upon
him, who senses his separation from God, being ignorant of the
things of God, goes wherever he thinks he might possibly find
some relief. He goes down to the church where
Dr. Decision pastors and he says to him, I'm in desperate need.
I'm guilty. I know I'm going to hell. And
the good doctor said, well, all you need to do is make your decision
for Jesus and everything will be all right. And so he does. And he walks away with some hope. But the plague is still on him.
He goes next place, Dr. Begood, he says to him, now you
just need to turn over a new leaf, you need to start living
right, you need to clean up your livestock, going to church, everything
will be alright. So he tries. But he finds himself
only growing worse. He goes down to the house of
Dr. Freewill and Dr. Freewill says to him, now this
is all in your mind. This is all because of your will.
Because you will not choose to be clean, you're not clean. So
if you'll just exercise your will, you'll be clean. And so
he says, I will be clean, but not clean. He goes to Dr. Cerebon and he says to him, you
just need to take the sacraments, you need to be baptized, you
need to take the Lord's Supper, you need to be in church, you
need to say your prayers and everything will be alright. And
so he tries but there's no good. He suffers and suffers and suffers
at the hands of physicians of no value. They all take his money
and they all say the Lord bless you, everything's okay. But he's
none the better. Well, he goes down to this fellow,
he said, well, what you need to do is get in the right church.
Dr. Wright Church, we got them all
around us. You need to get in the church that has this historic
validity. You need to get in the church
that has an apostolic succession. And so he said, well, what church
is the right church? Mine. And he's all in there, join up,
but nothing helps. And so he goes to the Charismatics,
the Pentecostals, and finds Dr. Excitement, Dr. Feel Good, Dr. Emotion. And he says, oh, you
just need to pray through, and you need to have some excitement
in your life. You're dead, and you just need
to be moved emotionally. Your feelings need to be stirred.
And still, nothing is better. The woman spent all she had. She suffered many things at the
hands of pretentious physicians and yet she was nothing bettered
but rather grew worse and Luke tells us neither could be healed
of any. I've said this so many times
and you can repeat it as well as I can. I wonder if we'll ever learn
it. Religion without Christ will never help anyone. It's just snake oil. It's just
taking somebody's pill. It just calms your emotions. It doesn't help. Religion without
Christ does positive harm and no good. It will only put you
in a worse condition. I say this with regard to Christless
religion where Christ is not preached and I say this with
regard to professing true religion. Your sons and daughters do not,
listen to me now, do not try to get them to make a profession
of faith. We want God to save them. You young people, these children
here, I pray for you and I ask God to save you by his almighty
grace. But I will not do your soul the
disservice of talking you into a religious profession when you
don't know God. I won't do it. It'll only make
things worse. All right. Now, secondly, let's
look at the crown. Verse 45. Jesus said, Who touched me? And
when all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master,
the multitude thronged thee, and pressed thee, and sayest
thou, Who touched me? With all these people brushing
up against you, all these people crowding up against your side,
crowding to see what you're going to do, you're asking, Who touched
you? There are myriads who profess faith in Christ and do so for
many reasons. Multitudes claim to follow Him
for many reasons. How many people there are gathered
in churches across this land tonight? Has it worth wronging
the Son of God, pressing Him to hear His Word, observe His
ordinances, sing His hymns of praise, observing all the outward
duties of religious service? But few, few, few there are who
touch Him. Churches are filled, many overflowing,
crowding to see some miracle, crowding to be entertained on
their road to hell by some great performance. But few there are
who touch the Son of God. Folks go to church because they're
curious about what's going on. Word gets around that somebody's
performing miracles and people are curious. Curious. Oh, let's
go see. Word gets around down the road
here we have such entertaining services. So they go to be entertained
and find a little excitement. Some, for fear of judgment, because
the wrath of God is heavy upon them, Go to church hoping to
relieve their consciences. Some, just because of social
pressure, they go because they're supposed to. Go because their
wife's religious and they don't want to look bad. Go because
their husband's religious and they don't want to look bad.
Go because their mom and dad and their family's always gone.
Just social pressure. The crowds of people thronged
our Lord. But there was only one person,
one person, Larry and Chris, in this whole crowd who desperately
needed Him and touched Him. Who is it who touches the Son
of God? I wonder if there's anybody here who desperately needs Him. Who desperately needs Him. Whose
heart's heavy. Whose soul's heavy. Who needs
mercy and grace. Is there anybody here who needs
Him? Oh my God, I need Him. That's who will touch Him. And
so touch him. Folks who can't find what they
need anywhere else but Him. They'll touch Him. They'll touch
Him. Now, look at verses 43 through
46. See something of the cure. This woman said, if I could just
touch the hem of his garment, I'd be made whole. She touched
him and immediately the issue of her blood was stopped. Verse
45, And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and
they that were with him said, Master, the multitude thronged
thee and pressed thee. Sayest thou who touched me? And
Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me, for I perceive that virtue
is gone out of me. Mark puts it this way. Turn back
to Mark 5. Let's read a few verses there. Mark chapter 5. Verse
27. While we're turning, let me tell
you if you'll touch Him. Oh, if you will touch Him. Ruth's
saying, He touched me. If you touch Him, it's because
He's touched you. But if you will touch Him, you will be made
whole of whatever your soul needs this hour. Reach out and touch
the Lord as he passes by. You'll find he's not too busy
to hear your heart's cry. He's passing by this moment. Your needs to supply. So reach out and touch the Lord
as he goes by. Mark 5 verse 27. When she had
heard of Jesus, came in the press behind and
touched his garment for she said she reasoned like this if I may
touch but his clothes I shall be made whole and straightway
the fountain of her blood was dried up and she felt in her
body that she was healed of the plague and Jesus immediately
knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him turned about
him in the press and said who touched my clothes verse 34 And
he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole, go
in peace, and behold of thy plague. Now there are many things here
that ought to catch our attention. Commonly, as this story is read
and as this story is told and preached, People miss the most
important aspects. They put all the emphasis upon
the woman. But inspiration puts all the
emphasis on the woman only as the recipient of mercy and the
benefactor of grace. But insofar as the act of mercy
and the work of grace is concerned, the emphasis must be placed upon
the Savior. This woman was made whole in
exactly the same way every sinner saved by the grace of God is
made whole. She was made whole by a five-fold
work that God performed. Let me give it to you. First,
there is the work of God's wise, adorable, good providence. Well, where is that preacher? She had the issue of blood. She had the need. God saw to
it. It wasn't an accident, Ron, that
this woman was stooped over for 12 years. God sent her that which
would destroy another so that he might make her whole inside
and out. That which was the destruction
of many. was the means by which she was forced to the Savior. That which was the destruction
of many was the means by which she was forced to life. That
which was the destruction of many was the means by which God
conveys His grace to her. She was bent over for 12 years
with an issue of blood. She went through all the torment
of suffering many things at the hands of many physicians and
was numb to bitterness so that she might be brought to her wits
end and compelled when the master came her way to seek him out
and touch him. Providence brought the chosen
sinner and the chosen Savior together at the appointed time
of love when God would be merciful to her and not just heal her
body, but heal her soul as well. Children of God, let us never,
never, never, never question God's providence. God Almighty
knows exactly what He's doing. He knows exactly what He's doing
with you and me. He knows exactly what he's doing
in this world. He knows exactly what he's doing
with our sons and daughters. We imagine that we know best. Oh, we imagine that we know best.
And we have to act on our best sense of things responsibly.
No question about that. Let me give you an illustration. Growing up with one daughter,
Shelby and I travel a lot, you know. through the various experiences
and people we've known all over the world, and boy, now that,
maybe that'd be the right son, right son-in-law. That'd be the
one for her. Sure glad she didn't get him.
Ha! This is him. Boy, he's, this
is it. This is what we want. I'm glad
she didn't get him. You know, there was not one person,
not one person, I looked at it and thought, now, I sure would
like for my daughter to get interested in him. Looking back on it, I
would be glad she got interested in him. Not one. Not one. How come? God knows
and does best in all things. If our sons and daughters are
His, if He's chosen them, and not one of them deserves His
mercy, Not yours, not mine. These darling grand babies, oh, they don't deserve His mercy
any more than the sons and daughters of the demons of hell themselves.
But if He's chosen them, if Christ has redeemed them, if they're
His, whatever it takes, my God, to bring them to You, whatever
the plague, Whatever the pain, to me or to them. Whatever the
sorrow, to me or to them. Lord God, I bow to you. Providence brought this woman
here. And then there was the work of
the word. I particularly read Mark's account because Mark said
when she heard of Jesus. Not before. You see, no one is ever saved
apart from the hearing of the gospel of Christ. Folks say,
well, what if there's not a preacher around? That's not a problem
to God. That's no difficulty to Him. What if a person's in
circumstances where there's just no gospel witness? That's not
a problem to God Almighty. God never bypasses His appointed
means of grace because He never has to. God never gets in a bind. Nobody ever boxes God up and
says, God can't work here. God does His will. And this woman
was brought to the Savior when she heard of Him. What did she
hear? I suspect she at least heard
about this Gadarene. I'm just fairly sure she heard
about that. I suspect she heard the Lord's conversation with
Jairus. She had heard of Him. And when she heard of Him, she
came to Him. And that's a work of grace. You
see, the grace of God, though it is not verbally mentioned
in any account of this woman's healing, is written all over
it. Grace had chosen her. She was
a certain woman. Grace caused the Lord Jesus to
come her way. Grace caused her to hear about
him. Grace gave her faith and brought
faith in her. And that brings us to the next
thing. There's a work of faith. This woman's faith, like all
true faith, was the gift of God. No question about that. Every once in a while I get a
letter from folks who try to get everything worked out and
all the T's crossed and I's dotted and everything said just the
right way and they say, now really, really it's not my faith, it's
God's faith. No. No, that's not right. That's not right. God gave her
faith. But it was her faith. She chose
to come to Christ. She chose to believe on the Son
of God. She was made willing in the day
of His power, but she was willing. She was called by grace to come
to Him, by the sweet constraint of His grace. But she did come. This woman touched the Master. She touched Him. You see, when
God gives faith, He gives it to chores. When God works faith
in you, He works it in you and to chores. As really and truly
as the hands on your arms are yours. This woman reached out
for Him and touched Him with willing heart. Glad to come to
Him, tickled to death she has opportunity. He passed her away.
And then there was this fifth work. A work of God's omnipotence. The arm of God, omnipotent, almighty,
irresistible. The arm of God's power, the arm
of his strength, brought this thing to pass exactly according
to the purpose of his everlasting love and grace toward this chosen
sinner. The Lord Jesus perceived that
virtue had gone out of him. What virtue? Life. What virtue? Omnipotence. What
virtue? Power. He perceived that power
flowed from him into somebody else that caused somebody else
to have the power to live by him. And then there's a confession
given in verse 47. When the woman saw that she was
not head, I can identify with that. Like
her, I've been to a lot of physicians of no value. I was in deep trouble and I was
utterly ashamed. But the Lord will not allow any
of his to be hid for very long. She came trembling, falling down
before him. What? Well, she'd been healed. Whoopee! Let's shout and jump
up and down. No. This woman knew what had
gone on inside her. She knew what had gone on inside
her all her life. And she knew what God had done
in her. Explain it. She wasn't even interested. She
wasn't even interested in explanation. But she came trembling, falling
down before him. And she declared unto him, look
at this, before all the people, for what cause she had touched
him, and how she was healed immediately. Mark says she told him all the
truth. Our Savior asked who touched
me. Not because he needed to find
out. He's God Almighty. He knew who touched him. But
she must be compelled to confess Him. And our Lord brings this
out to show us the necessity of confessing Christ before men.
With the mouth, confession is made unto salvation. This woman
came and told the Savior publicly all the truth. Let's listen in. I was dying when I came here
this morning. I had been plagued with this
issue of blood for 12 years. Unclean, unfit for society. Nobody had anything to do with
me and I couldn't have anything to do with anybody else. Everything
I touched was unclean. Banished from the place of your
people, rightfully so because I was unclean. from the house
of God, rightfully so, because I was unclean. And I was in desperate
need. I'd been everywhere I could go
to find help. I went over here and this fellow said he could
help me, but all he did was took my money. And I went down there
and that fellow said he could help me, but all he did was took
my money and my time. And over there that fellow said
he could help me, but all he did was took my money and my time.
And I'm here in this desperate need. And I heard about you. I heard what you did for that
Gadarene. I heard what you were about to do for Jairus, I heard
who you are, and I said if I could just touch him, if I could just
touch him, I know he'd make me whole. And so I came in the crowd,
covered myself so nobody would see me, recognize who I am, nobody
would know I touched them. I crawled between the people
and when I got near I touched you and immediately the power
that you are flowed into me and here I stand erect, healthy,
my face is flushed, I've been made whole. Now it's not needful for us to
blow the trumpet in the streets Force people to hear us when
they choose not to listen, that's not needful. That's not confessing
Christ, that's not witnessing. This buttonhole religious age,
everybody wants to buttonhole you and get you in their church
and get you on their toot board and say we got this fellow to
make a decision, is not of God, that's not witnessing. You don't
grab folks and make them listen to things they don't want to
hear, don't cast your pearls before swine. But it is required. That we identify
ourselves with our master and his gospel and his people publicly. We must never be ashamed to confess
Christ before men. It begins here in believers baptism.
Here we draw a line in the sand and say Christ is my life. Everything
else is death, destruction and sin. Everything. This is it. I live for him. In day by day
conversation we confess him. in our manner of life as well
as in speaking for him. That doesn't mean you get folks
and sit down and you start fussing with them about what the Bible
teaches. No. That means every time God gives
you opportunity, when you meet up with a needy sinner, you tell
him what God in his grace has done for you. Maybe he'll do
the same for you. I was plagued and unclean, guilty, cursed,
condemned. And the Lord Jesus Christ has
spoken peace to my heart. He's forgiven me all my sin. Maybe, just maybe, He'd do the
same for you. Come hear about Him. We confess
Him as faithful witnesses. Now look at the consolation our
Lord gives in verse 48. And he said unto her, Daughter,
be of good comfort. Thy faith hath made thee whole,
go in peace. Now obviously, there was nothing in her that
could heal her. Her faith, the act of touching
him, did not heal her. But the act of faith put her
in touch with him who did heal her. And so the master says,
your faith has made you whole. Our Lord commends her faith,
that great work of grace, which he himself both wrought in her
and of which he is the object. You see, nothing brings such
glory to God as that faith that looks to Christ for everything. Faith honors God, for faith ascribes
everything to Him. Everything. Nothing is so useful
to our souls as faith in Christ. It is faith connecting us to
Him that brings peace. It is faith connecting us to
Him that is virtue to us. It is faith connecting us to
Him that causes the power of His grace to be known in our
souls. Nothing is so important as this.
Dost thou believe on the Son of God? I looked up an old hymn written
by Edmund Jones and wrote it out a little while ago. He said,
well, Pastor, I don't know whether he'd receive me or not. Let me
give you the hymn. Come, humble sinner, in whose
breast a thousand thoughts revolve. Come with your guilt and fear
oppressed, and make this last resolve. I'll go to Jesus though
my sin has like a mountain rose. I will his courts now enter in
whatever may oppose. Prostrate I'll lie before his
throne and there my guilt confess. I'll tell him I'm a wretch undone
without his sovereign grace. I'll to the gracious King approach
whose scepter pardon gives, perhaps he may command my touch, and
then this sinner lives. Perhaps he will admit my plea,
perhaps will hear my prayer. But if I perish, I will pray
and perish only there. I can but perish if I go. I am resolved to try, for if
I stay away, I know I must forever die. But if I die with mercy
