The Bible teaches that suffering can be a means through which the hand of God touches our lives, calling us to a deeper understanding of Him.
In the life of Job, we see a profound example of suffering that brings about a unique awareness of God's providence and redemptive purposes. Job, despite his immense loss, acknowledges, 'the hand of God hath touched me' (Job 19:21). This illustrates that even in our most desperate circumstances, God’s hand is at work, shaping our hearts and drawing us closer to Him. Suffering can be an avenue for God to reveal His grace and mercy, leading us to see Him as our ultimate Redeemer and hope amidst trials.
Job 19:21-27
The certainty in Jesus as our Redeemer is rooted in the Word of God and the biblical declarations of His life, death, and resurrection.
Job declares, 'For I know that my Redeemer liveth' (Job 19:25), pointing to the assurance that believers have in Christ as our Redeemer. This assurance is not based on emotion but on the firm foundation of God's unchanging Word. Throughout Scripture, Christ is depicted as the Redeemer who has the power to save, is without sin, willing to lay down His life, and provides the precious blood necessary for our redemption. Ultimately, it’s through His resurrection that we have the guarantee of eternal life, and this same certainty reassures us that He will stand as our advocate before the Father.
Job 19:25, Isaiah 40:6-8
Humility is essential in the Christian life as it aligns us with God's will and opens the door to His grace.
In God's kingdom, the path to exaltation begins with humility. Our Lord Jesus teaches, 'He that humbleth himself shall be exalted' (Luke 14:11). This principle counteracts the worldly desire for self-promotion and achievement. Humility allows us to recognize our dependence on Christ and to serve others, reflecting His character. Acknowledging that we are nothing in ourselves and that our strength comes from Him enables us to receive grace abundantly and to be used for His glory. As Job exemplifies, true wisdom and understanding come from recognizing our frailty and the majesty of a sovereign God.
Luke 14:11, 1 Peter 5:5-6
Faith in God anchors us in certainty, even amidst the uncertainties and trials of life.
Job's declaration of faith— 'I know that my Redeemer liveth' (Job 19:25)—demonstrates that faith provides a steadfast foundation in uncertain times. This certainty comes not from our circumstances but from the unchanging nature of God and His promises. The world's uncertainties can be overwhelming, but faith assures us of God's presence and ultimate plan. Believers can find peace in knowing that God controls all events and works everything for good (Romans 8:28). The confidence we have in God’s character and His redemptive work allows us to navigate life's vicissitudes with hope.
