This is what I'm interested in.
It says here in verse 14, because He has set His love upon me,
I will deliver Him. That's the first one. I will
deliver Him. I'm interested in that, aren't
you? To be delivered. You know, the word saved is to
be delivered. Delivered. He hath delivered
us from so great a death. He doth deliver us, and we trust
He shall deliver us. Delivered. We've been delivered
from the curse of the law. Cursed is everyone that continueth
not in all points of the law that's written in the law to
do them. We've been delivered. There's no condemnation to them
who are in Christ. But not only that, we've been
delivered from the righteous claims of justice. And we've
been delivered from the way that seems right. I want to be delivered
from the way that seems right to me, because he said the way
that seems right to men. ends in death and destruction.
We've been delivered. And then delivered from the traditions
of natural religion. Peter stood that day, they call
Pentecost, and he said, save yourselves or deliver yourselves
from this perverse generation, from this religious generation. And I'm interested in that. God
said, I will deliver him. I will deliver him from the curse
of the law. I will deliver him from the way
that seems right. I will deliver him from perverse
religion. I will deliver him through the
blood of Christ from the righteous claims of the law. All right,
look at the second promise. I will deliver him. I will set
him on high. I will set him on high. Now,
we're certainly talking about something a lot better than the
high seats of government. Many men have sought these and
found them and occupied them to their misfortune. We're not
talking about the high seats of business. We're not talking
about the high seats of religion. Men have found those and been
sadly disappointed. But we're talking about being
seated with Christ. Turn to the book of Ephesians
with me, chapter 2, verse 6. This is what the psalmist is
referring to, Ephesians 2, verse 6. It says, He hath raised us
up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ
Jesus. That's what I want. Seated with
Christ in the heavenlies. Seated with Christ on the right
hand of God. Crucified with Christ, risen
with Christ, and seated with Christ. There's a sense, did
you know, there's a sense in which we're already glorified,
who are redeemed? In Romans 8, 29, and 30, it says,
Whom he foreknew, he predestinated to be conformed to the image
of his Son. And whom he predestinated, he
called, and whom he called, he justified, and whom he justified,
he glorified. Past tense, already glorified. In the purpose of God, in the
mind of God, already seated. Already seated with Christ? Already
occupying the throne? Oh, what a promise! I'll deliver
Him, I'll set Him on high. Now look at verse 15. I may shock
you a little bit here, but I've got to say these things because
they're true. He says in verse 15, He shall
call upon me and I will answer Him. I will answer Him. Brother
Mahan, what is so special about that? Don't you know God answers
everybody that calls on Him, does He? God is a prayer-hearing
God, is He? Anybody who calls on God will
be heard, will they? Let's do some checking up on
that. Turn with me to the book of Exodus. Exodus chapter 20. Now here, God, right in the midst
of this, He says, I'll deliver him. deliver him from curse,
the curse of judgment, the curse of the law, the wrath of judgment.
I'll set him on high. And right in the midst of these
awesome mercies and awesome blessings, God gives this simple declaration,
I, the Lord God, will answer him. And to answer him, he must
hear him. I will hear him and answer him.
Did you know what we take for granted, this thing of Our Father,
we're gathered in Thy presence this morning. We thank Thee for
Your mercies. Will You be pleased to bless
us? That, let's have a little word of prayer. You hear people
say, let's have a little word of prayer. There ain't no little
word of prayer. Somebody says, let's have a little
talk with Jesus. I despise that. There's no such
thing as a little talk with Jesus. There's no little, there's no
little conversation with the Queen of
England. There's no little conversation
with the President of the United States. That's no... My friend,
do you realize what it would mean if you were invited to the
White House? They'd put your picture on the front page of
the Iceland Daily Independent tomorrow. Here a certain man, Brother Jay
Wimbley, is going to Washington and have an audience with the
President. His picture will be on the front page. And we're
going to have a little talk with Jesus. Well, I want to tell you something,
and I don't mean to be rough here, but somebody needs to get
rough with this religious generation that's going to hell, that's
so familiar with a holy God. In Exodus 20, verse 19, the people
of Israel had received the law. They had seen the lightning and
the thunder and the glory of God surrounding that mountain,
the awesome glory of God. And they said, Moses, Moses,
speak thou with us and we'll hear, but let not God speak with
us lest we die. Don't want to hear from God.
Huh? I'll tell you why they didn't
want to hear from God. They knew the awesome, infinite, immutable,
immaculate holiness of God. And they knew their awful, evil,
corrupt, depraved, wicked hearts. And they knew they had no right
to talk with God or to God to talk with them. Turn to Exodus
6, or Deuteronomy 5, I mean. Deuteronomy 5. Now this will
really give you something to work on this afternoon. Deuteronomy
chapter 5. You say, that's the Old Testament.
Same God. Same God. That's Old Testament
people. Same sins. Same sins. I didn't know God had changed.
Same yesterday, today, and forever. God hasn't changed. God's never
been spoken to, nor spoken to a sinner except through a mediator.
Never. He does not now, never has, and
never will. Same God. Same yesterday, today, and forever.
Deuteronomy 5, Moses talking here about the law that the people
had received. He says in verse 24, And ye said,
Behold, the Lord our God hath showed us his glory and his greatness,
and we've heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. We've
seen this day that God doth talk with man, and man still lives. Huh? God still speaks and you're
still alive. And that was a phenomenon. Read
on. Now therefore, why should we
die? This great fire will consume us if we hear the voice of the
Lord our God anymore. We'll die. For who is there,
who is there of all flesh that has heard the voice of the living
God speaking out of the midst of the fire, His holiness, His
immutable holiness, as we have and live? Where is the man that's
ever heard God speak and live? And then we talk about a little
talk with Jesus. I tell you, my friends, the only,
the only reason that God hasn't, the only reason when you said
your little prayer this morning that God didn't send you to hell
right then for calling his name and daring to approach him on
such familiar terms was that Christ was pleading for you.
You have a high priest. Now, Hebrews 10, you say, well,
God commanded us to pray. That's right, in the name of
Christ. God commanded us to come boldly
before the thorn of grace. That's right, through the person
of Christ. But God told us that men are
everywhere to pray. That's right, in Christ. But
if you don't have Christ and you're not in Christ, you've
got no more business calling God's name than a baboon in the
middle of Africa. That's true. You've got no access
to God. In Hebrews chapter 10, look at
this. Look at this. Verse 17, there's
sins and iniquities. Well, I remember no more. Verse
18, Hebrews 10, now where remission of sins is, where remission of
these is, there's no more offering for sin. Having therefore, brethren,
boldness to enter the holiest. How? By the blood of Jesus. You
better not come any other way. All the soldiers going into the
battles in World War II said, oh, God have mercy. Not without
Christ. You got no right to call on God.
I tell you, this is important. Israel of old cried not to God,
but they cried to the mediator and said, you speak to God. Don't
let God speak to us, lest we die. And here we are in Psalm
91. I've got to go on. I don't have
time to dwell on that any longer. But I want you to study it a
little bit. He said, these are the special, seven special promises. This is spiritual promises that
I covered. God says, I'll deliver him, and
I'll set him on high, and I'm going to answer him. I'm going
to hear him when he prays. And that's right along with this
awesome Seating of the believer on the right hand of God. Well,
go ahead. That's not all he says. I'll be with him I'll be with
him in trouble Paul says we gonna have trouble in the flesh Paul
says we're trouble on every side Every son of Adam's acquainted
with trouble. I've got troubled. You've got
trouble Trouble in the home trouble in the only job trouble in the
flesh Trouble everywhere. We've got trouble, but let me
tell you something The difference in the unbeliever being in trouble
and the believer being in trouble is Christ said, I'll be with
him in his trouble. The unbeliever is alone. The
believer has a threefold promise. He has the promise of Christ's
presence. I'll never leave you, he said,
I'll never forsake you. He has the promise of Christ's
purpose, that this is going to work for his good. Everything
is going to work for his good. It may be so distressing and
troublesome and wearisome, and it may be such a heavy burden,
but it's going to be for your good if you're in Christ. You
have the promise of His purpose, and then you have the promise
of His power. He said, My grace will be sufficient. You're going to make it through.
You're going to make it through because I'm with you. I'm going
to be with you. Now, the unbeliever doesn't have
that. He's got the trouble. But he's got the trouble without
the presence of the Lord, he's got the trouble without the purpose
of the Lord, because it's not going to work for his good, it's
going to work for his damnation. It's going to work for the condemnation
of him and everybody he's associated with. And he certainly doesn't
have any strength. He doesn't have the strength
and power and grace of the Lord. Take your burden to the Lord
and leave it there. Leave it there. I'll be with
him in trouble. Think about that. And then he
says next, He repeats the word, I'll deliver him, verse 15, but
he said, I'll honor him. I'll honor him. Now, believers
are not delivered in a way that lowers and degrades them. Barnard
used to say, I'm somebody. I'm somebody. And we are. We're sons of God. We've been
brought from the pit with honor and glory. If a man's serving
time in a penitentiary because of a crime that he's committed,
when they let him out, he's not going to come out of there with
his head high and with pride in his heart. He's going to come
out with his chin on his chest, and he's going to come out with
his forehead wrinkled because of his shame, and he's going
to come out with his eyes downcast because he's embarrassed, because
folks won't let him forget it. Don't let him forget it. Men
are released from prison, but they carry the stigma all the
days of their life. Not God's people. When we are
redeemed from the prison house of sin, we're redeemed with honor.
We're redeemed with honor. And God makes us sons of God.
He says, He has made us kings and priests of our God. And sure,
we're a farmer. alcoholics, and drunks, and liars,
and harlots, and whoremongers, and blasphemers. Such were some
of you, but you've been redeemed, and you've been redeemed with
honor." God says, I'll honor him. I'll honor him. We'll let the vilest of vile
into the pulpit, the minister to us. Well, a society, Jay,
is not going to make a prisoner the president. Society is not
going to make the criminal the captain of the police department.
Society doesn't work that way, but God does. God does. Christ chose as his companion,
going into glory, a thief on a cross. It's something that
natural men cannot, they can't comprehend, they can't understand
the riches of his grace, the riches of his grace. Our Lord
said, anybody who wants to be greatest among you, let him be
your servant. Our Lord said, you've got a problem in the church,
let the least esteemed members handle it and solve that thing.
Our Lord takes the blasphemer like Saul of Tarsus, a vile murderer,
and makes him the greatest apostle who ever lived. Chief of sinners. Chief of sinners. I will honor
him. I will honor him. No matter how
low he's sunk, I'll honor him. And that's what I don't understand
about preachers, you know. They deny the very thing they're
supposed to be preaching. They'll make a little rule, they'll
never marry a divorced person. No man can be a deacon who's
ever been divorced, or no man can be this because of something
else. When I was at Potter's one time, I asked a lady to sing,
and one of the deacons came and said, she can't sing. I said,
why can't she sing? She said, she hadn't been saved
long enough to live down her past. Oh, he hit him in the mouth.
You wonder why preachers have tempers? You ought to sit sometime
and listen to that junk. That's the very thing we deny
and the very thing we preach. Our Lord takes the vilest of
vile and makes them kings and priests and giants in the kingdom
of God. And you pious folks that have
always done right and always lived right and always said your
little prayers and read your daily Bible and come to church,
He's going to put you on the bottom of the rung because you
can't appreciate His mercy. He to whom much is forgiven,
He'll love much. We read that, but we don't believe
it. It bothers me. It upsets me. Because the very
things that our God is saying, we're not hearing. We're hearing
me and we're not hearing God. Our Lord is merciful. He's gracious. He was in the house of that Pharisee
that time, Eton, and that harlot came in and washed his feet.
And that pious religious fellow said, now, if he is a prophet,
he wouldn't let her touch him. He'd know what kind of woman
she is. And our Lord straightened him out quick, didn't He? He
straightened him out real quick. He said, to whom much is forgiven,
they'll love much. Give me the man who knows God's
grace. I want to listen to him preach
it. Give me the man or woman who knows something about mercy,
and I'll listen to him preach it. I'll honor him, honor him,
he said. Look at the next line. He says,
in the sixth place, with long life, I'll satisfy him. Well,
I don't think that's talking about being permitted to live
here 100 years. I don't know whether I won't
live here 100 years or not. Maybe David Brainerd, he died
at 29. Robert McShane at 29. Augustus
Toplady, rock of ages, author, died at 38. Spurgeon died at
58. You could go on down the line,
John the Baptist at 33. I doubt that that's talking about
long life here on this earth. Paul said to die is gain. He
said, I won't leave this place and go be with the Lord. I'll
tell you what he's talking about. He's talking about eternal life.
David said, I'll be satisfied, satisfied when I awake in his
likeness. I'm going to satisfy him because
he's going to be in my likeness forever. Most satisfying. And then he said in the seventh
blessing or mercy or promise, he said, I'm going to show him
my glory. I'm going to show him my salvation.
And that's his glory. Moses said, Lord, show me your
glory. And our Lord said, I'll cause my goodness to pass before
you. I'll proclaim the name of the
Lord before you. I'll be merciful, merciful to
whom I'll be merciful. I'll be gracious to whom I'll
be gracious. I'll show you my glory. That's
my grace, my salvation. I want to see His glory. Now
you think that's what we want. Not that. Now what we want, I
don't want to just have a little sunshine this side of hell. I
don't want to have a few steaks and baked potatoes and hot rolls
this side of hell. I don't want just a few days
of reprieve. I want God to deliver me and
you. I want God Almighty to set us
on high. I want God Almighty to hear us.
I don't want to go through the motions of prayer, amen and amen,
you know. Oh, how wicked it is to have
a little talk with Jesus and this ungodly familiarity with
holiness. I want God to hear us and answer
us. And I want God Almighty to be
with me in my trouble and honor me and you and give us eternal
life and show us his salvation. Now, there's no need to burden
you with a lot of arguments here and reasons why these blessings
are not for all men. They're not. That's not for everybody. The Bible says the way of the
transgressor is hard. The Bible says, God hateth the
workers of iniquity. The Bible says, God's angry with
the wicked every day. God said, he that believeth not
on Christ, the wrath of God abideth on him. That's not for all men. These mercies and promises are
to those who come under these three becauses. When Jay was
reading that, did you see three becauses? Look at verse 9. Because. Because. thou hast made the Lord which
is my refuge even the most high thy hiding place or habitation
because you see verse 14 because he hath set his love upon me
therefore I'll deliver him he says in verse 14 again because
he hath known my name oh just like under the law if there is
a because in under the law There is a because which is followed
by a therefore. In other words, because you rebelled,
therefore you're dead and sin. Because you resisted God, therefore
you're under God's judgment. See, there's a because and a
therefore. The therefore follows the because. Because Adam fell,
therefore we are sons of death and judgment. Same thing in grace. Because, therefore. Because you've
made the Lord your refuge, therefore I'll answer him. Because you
love me, therefore I'll deliver you. Because you know my name,
therefore I'll set you on high. Because, therefore. It's not
just a therefore without a because. All right, let's see those three
things, and then we'll go. I want you to see these three
things. First one, he says, because thou hast made the Lord, which
is my refuge, the Most High, thy habitation. Look back at
verse one. What is this habitation? What
is this refuge? He that dwelleth in the secret
place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the
Almighty. What is this secret place? Could
I suggest three things? First of all, this secret place
where we dwell, and this is not an in and an out. This is not
just dwelling there on Sunday and dwelling somewhere else six
days a week. This is not just making a pilgrimage to the Holy
Land or to Mecca to somewhere once a year or once a generation
or so forth. This is dwelling there. He that
dwelleth in the secret. Thou hast made the Lord our God
your refuge, your habitation. This is where you live. You see
verse 9 there? Because thou hast made the Lord,
which is my refuge, the most high, thy habitation. This is
where you live. And verse 1, He that dwelleth.
This is where you dwell. The secret place. May I suggest
three places. Number one, the covenant of God's
mercy. The covenant of God's grace.
That's where I dwell. It's where you dwell. That's
where believers dwell. In the covenant of his grace.
Of which Christ is the surety. Of which the heavenly father
is the author. The covenant of his grace. I
tell you somewhere else we dwell. The shepherd fold. Christ said
they shall be one fold, one shepherd. One fold. in the shepherd's fold. He's the chief shepherd, the
great shepherd, and the good shepherd. I'll tell you, somewhere
else we dwell, and that is within the veil. Within the veil. Now, the high priest would come
once a year under the veil into the presence of God with the
blood of others, with the atonement, but that veil's been rent in
two. God tore it apart, and now we dwell within the veil. We
dwell in the presence of our Lord. This is not a pilgrimage
we make occasionally. We dwell in His presence. We
dwell in Christ, not in and out, not once a week, but we dwell
there, not running occasionally to Him. We dwell there in the
secret place, in His covenant of mercy, in His shepherd foe,
within the veil, in the presence of God, in Christ. Because look
at this, I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge. You see, not
his law, not his church building, not some denomination. He's my
refuge. He's my fortress. He's my God. He's my dwelling place in Christ. Turn to Ephesians chapter 1 just
a minute. Let me show you something here.
Ephesians, the first chapter. In the first chapter of Ephesians,
We see how that everything we have and are, possess, hope for,
is in Christ. That's where it all is. God's
vested it all in Christ, and it's mine as I dwell in Christ.
In Ephesians 1, verse 3, listen to this. Blessed be the God and
Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all
spiritual blessings in the heavenlies in Christ, according as he chose
us in Christ. Verse six, to the praise of the
glory of his grace where he made us accepted in Christ. Verse seven, in Christ we have
redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sin. Everything's
in Christ. So that's what he's saying in
verse, I'm going to deliver him and seat him on high and answer
him and honor him and be with him in trouble because he dwells
in Christ. That's the reason. He dwells
in Christ. It's not any merit of my own. Look at verse 4. He
shall cover thee. Cover thee with his feathers.
He covers me with his blood. He covers me with his righteousness. He covers me with his protective
arms under his wing, shalt thou trust. Here it is. Here's where it is. It's in Christ.
And because you've made the Lord your hiding place, your dwelling
place, your refuge, therefore, I'll deliver you. I'll set you
on high. I'll be with you in trouble.
I'll answer you. You see, all of it's because.
All right, here's the second point now. Verse 14, Psalm 91.
Verse 14, because He hath set His love upon me,
therefore will I deliver him." Now listen to me. I'll be the
first one to preach and declare and testify that we love God
because He first loved us. That's so. Our love to Christ
is the offspring of His love to us. We love Him because He
first loved us. Here in His love, not that we
love God, but that He loved us and gave His Son to be the propitiation
for our sins. A sense of his love for us is
the cause of our love for him. But my friends, this is not talking
about God's love for me here. This is talking about my love
for God. It's exactly what it's talking about. Because, and I
know we're motivated by the grace of God, repentance is the gift
of God, faith is the gift of God, this work of grace is by
the power of God, But because you've made Christ your refuge,
and because you love Christ, I'm going to deliver you. Do
you love Christ? If any man loved not our Lord
Jesus Christ, let him be anathema. I hear people say, I love the
throne of God. I don't. Not especially. I love the one who sits on that
throne, I believe. There's a difference now. I love
the doctrine of election. I don't. I really don't. I don't see too much in it to
love as far as it's taken by itself. I love the God of election. There's a difference. I love
Christ. Christ said, do you love me, Peter? Do you love me, Lord?
You know all things. You know I love you. Oh, I love
my Baptist denomination. I wish they'd get straightened
out. But I love Christ. That's where our love must be,
in Christ. And brethren, let me show you
several things here quickly. Love to Christ is the mark of
the new birth. It's the mark of the new birth.
Everyone that loveth is born of God. You know what scripture
says? Everyone that loveth is born of God. Secondly, love to
Christ is the mark of knowing God, for he that loveth not knoweth
not God. And then love to Christ is the
root of love to others. He that loveth God loveth also
him that's forgotten of God. You know what it says? And then
love to God is the means of peace. Perfect love casteth out fear.
And then love to God is the motivation for obedience. Paul said, the
love of Christ constraineth me. So this is where it all is. Thou
hast made, thou hast made the Lord God thy refuge and dwelling
place. That's where you dwell, that's
your habitation, in him. And you love him. You love him. All right, now it's this third
one now. And he says in verse 14, because Thou hast known my name. Thou hast known my name. Let's pause here a minute. This
is a place to sit down and think a little bit. Exodus 3, let's
go over here. And you notice when I try to
preach the gospel, I go back to the Old Testament. There's
something we need to learn. There's a law of first mention.
How something's dealt with first in the Word of God is what it
means all the way through. And our Lord Jesus Christ always
went back to the scriptures, the Old Testament. Because everything
that God teaches in the new, he taught in the old. He pictured,
he typified, he prophesied, he promised. Our Lord said, as Moses
lifted up the serpent, so must the Son of Man be lifted up.
Our Lord said, as Jonah was three days and three nights in the
belly of the fish, so shall the Son of Man be three days and
three nights in the earth, and so forth, always basing it. Paul
in 1st Corinthians 2nd Corinthians 13 said as it says in the Old
Testament Let every word be established by two or three witnesses as
it is written as it is written as it is written And we'll show
you something that's written here Exodus 3 verse 13 and Moses
said unto God when I come to the children of Israel and I
say to them the Lord the God of your fathers has sent me unto
you And they say to me, what is his name? What shall I say? What is his name? Now, preachers
come to you today. Moses said, I'm going down there,
God. I'm going down to those people. And I'm going to tell
them God said something. And the first thing they're going
to ask me, they're going to ask me, what's his name? Now, what am I going
to tell them? And we've got multitudes of preachers
today, and they're coming saying, God said this, and God said that,
and God said the other, and God promises this, and promises that,
and promises the other. And he does to those who know
his name. And I want to ask those preachers,
tell me about him. What's his name? What's his name? What's his name? Turn to Exodus
6. Now, this is something you need
to look at for a while today or this week. And the Lord said to Moses, Exodus
6, 1. Now stay with me. The Lord said
to Moses, Now shalt thou see what I'll do to Pharaoh. With
a strong hand shall he let them go. With a strong hand shall
he drive them out of his land. He's going to get rid of Israel. God's speaking to Moses and saying
to him, I am the Lord. I am Jehovah. I appeared unto
Abraham. Isaac and Jacob by the name of
God Almighty But by my name Jehovah Was I not known to them? Hmm But Abraham called him Jehovah
over here in Genesis 22 turn over Genesis 22 a minute God
says Moses and Moses, you're going down into Egypt. And Pharaoh's
going to let them go. He's going to let them go. He's
going to want to let them go. He's going to put them out of
Egypt. And I'm going to reveal myself
to you, the Lord, Jehovah, Jehovah. He says, Abraham, Isaac, and
Jacob, I was known to them as God Almighty. They never saw
me like you're going to see me. They didn't have the revelation
of Jehovah like you're going to have. Now turn to Genesis
22. It says here in Genesis 22 verse
14, and Abraham, now this is a long time before that scripture,
and Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah, Jehovah-Jireh,
the Lord will see, the Lord will provide. As it is said to this
day in the Mount of the Lord, it shall be seen. Well, what
is this verse saying in Exodus 6 verse 3? And I appeared unto
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob by the name of God Almighty, but
by my name Jehovah was I not known to them. This is what our
Lord is saying to Moses. Each generation walks in the
light it receives. Each generation. Our God revealed
himself to Adam and to Abel and to Sarah. And he revealed himself
in the light that he wanted them determined for them to have.
They knew nothing of the cross. They knew the sacrifice and the
blood. Abel brought the blood sacrifice. But he didn't have the revelation
that Abraham had. And along came Abraham and God
revealed himself to Abraham as it pleaseth him. And Christ said,
Abraham saw my day. I don't know how much of Christ's
day Abraham saw. But I know Abraham knew that
he was a sinner and knew that God was merciful to sinners and
knew that God would be gracious. And he believed God. He believed
God. He said, the Lord will provide.
Isaac said, where's the lamb? He said, the Lord will provide.
He looked at that lamb. He did. He believed God. He did
what God told him to do. He never saw what Moses saw.
He'd come around to Moses and hear God talking to Moses. He
said, now Abraham and Jacob and Isaac, they had some light, but
not like you're gonna have. They had some revelations, but
not like I'm gonna show you. You know what I'm gonna show
you, Moses? That night in Egypt, the Passover, Abraham knew nothing
of the Passover. Isaac knew nothing of the Passover.
Abel knew nothing of the Passover. God showed the lamb. This is
the first time. And the people were to eat the
lamb. They were to roast it with fire. That's Christ's body being
broken and going through the fires of wrath. And we eat the
flesh of the Son of Man. We drink His blood. His blood
was separated from His body, and the blood was actually put
on the doorpost. There was an application of blood
on the doorpost. And God came through and he said,
when I see the blood, I'll pass over you. And the firstborn was
spared. Abraham knew nothing of that.
New revelation. And then God set up the tabernacle
out there in the wilderness and he put the veil there and the
Holy of Holies and there was the Ark of the Covenant with
a broken law and the mercy seat. Abraham never saw a mercy seat.
Isaac never saw a mercy seat. Jacob never saw a mercy seat.
Moses did. And the high priest would come
into the Holy of Holies with the blood. New revelation, further
revelation, more revelation. Oh, I was known to them as God
Almighty and I was known to them, yes, Jehovah, but not like I'm
going to be known, Moses, to you and to Israel. In my acts,
I believe the Amplified Version says, in the acts and miracles
of redemption, in my redemptive work, They didn't see what you
see. They didn't see what you see.
OK, now wait a minute. What about now? Now, brother,
you walk in the light God gives you. And Moses, I mean, Abraham
and Abel had the light God gave them. It was limited to that
dispensation. They weren't expected to walk
in the light of the Passover. They never had it. They weren't
expected to walk in the light of the Holy of Holies with a
mercy seat, they never had it. But Moses was. Moses, you better
keep the Passover, you better bring the lamb, you better enter
the Holy of Holies, the high priest better come once a year,
Jehovah has revealed his name. You know where we've been? We've
left. We've left. the mountain altars. We've left the tabernacle in
the wilderness. We've left the veil in the temple. We've left the mercy seat on
the earth. We've come to Calvary. And there
the Son of God himself, the fulfillment of all these types and pictures
and promises, has come to this earth and tabernacled among us.
Our tabernacle is Christ. he's gone to the cross and there
he died for our sins and there he endured the judgment and wrath
of God. He is our Passover. He is that
rock. He is our substitute. He is our
high priest. He is our mediator. He has ascended
to the right hand of God where he's seated as our advocate. Do you know his name? That's
what he's saying in Psalm 91. I'm gonna I'm gonna answer somebody
But that one who calls is not going to call upon the one who's
revealed back there only as God Almighty. I hear people say, well, I believe
in Almighty God. You've got to believe more than
that. The devil believes that and trembles. Well, I believe
in a Supreme Being. You're going too far back, bud.
You're going too far back. You're walking in the light of
another generation and refusing the light of your generation.
You've got to know more than that. You've got to know His
name. What is His name? There's none other name under
heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. Whosoever shall
call upon the name of the Son of God shall be saved. What is
His name? His name is wisdom, righteousness,
sanctification, and redemption. His name is justification. His name is sanctification. His
name is mercy. His name is grace. His name is
satisfaction. His name is all of these things. All of it fulfilled in Christ.
Do you know His name? There's the key to these blessings.
There it is, right there. Because you've made the Lord
your dwelling place, your refuge, your habitation, your place where
you live. Because you love him. And because
you know his name. His name. He said, I'll deliver
you. I'll set you on high. I'll answer
you. Be with you in trouble. There's
none other name given among men, there's none can with him compare. All others are marred by sin. They're scarred. He's fairer
than all the fair. On a cross lifted high went a
man forth to die, and the arm of the Lord was revealed. In
sorrow forlorn are griefs he hath borne, and with his stripes
we're healed. This lamb that was slain has
risen again. His triumph we all shall see,
once dying in shame, soon coming again. Our Savior, our King,
is He. Do you know His name? Do you
know His name? Is that song in the book, His
Name is Wonderful? His name is wonderful, that's
been going through my mind. His name, that's a chorus, isn't
it? Pick us another song then, Lord,
and let's sing it close. If you're here this morning and
God is God has dealt with you, that'd be a good one, 454. If the Lord has spoken to your
heart and you wish to confess Christ as your Lord and Savior,
you want to follow the Lord in baptism, or you want to unite
with this church by letter or statement, you want to worship
with us here, we'd be glad to have you. I want you, I'm going
to speak tonight, my subject is seeing we have this ministry,
but I want you to think about this message I preached this
morning. The promises are based on three becauses, and it's right
there in front of you. Because the Lord's your dwelling
place, not your occasional site of visiting, you know. Because
you love him, because you know his name. You know his name. I want you to read these verses
in Exodus again. You know his name. I know whom
I have believed. That's what Paul said. I know
whom I have believed. I know his name. I know his name. And you see, calling on the name
of the Lord Jesus Christ, that's the name by which God saves.
And that's what he says over there in Jehovah, you see, in
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, I was God Almighty, but Moses, you're
going to see me as Jehovah. And then Joshua, Savior, that
is my name. It's not easy as ABCs either. It's not the simple gospel that's
being produced or presented in this day. It's more than that.
It's more than that. Your eternal soul requires as
much care as the many hours you spend making this body what it
ought to be. It deserves more. I want you
to think on these things. Let's stand and sing this closing
hymn, 454. Christ has put us in a tomb that made for a wonderful
sight. What a wonderful city.
Henry Mahan
About Henry Mahan

Henry T. Mahan was born in Birmingham, Alabama in August 1926. He joined the United States Navy in 1944 and served as a signalman on an L.S.T. in the Pacific during World War II. In 1946, he married his wife Doris, and the Lord blessed them with four children.

At the age of 21, he entered the pastoral ministry and gained broad experience as a pastor, teacher, conference speaker, and evangelist. In 1950, through the preaching of evangelist Rolfe Barnard, God was pleased to establish Henry in sovereign free grace teaching. At that time, he was serving as an assistant pastor at Pollard Baptist Church (off of Blackburn ave.) in Ashland, Kentucky.

In 1955, Thirteenth Street Baptist Church was formed in Ashland, Kentucky, and Henry was called to be its pastor. He faithfully served that congregation for more than 50 years, continuing in the same message throughout his ministry. His preaching was centered on the Lord Jesus Christ and Him crucified, in full accord with the Scriptures. He consistently proclaimed God’s sovereign purpose in salvation and the glory of Christ in redeeming sinners through His blood and righteousness.

Henry T. Mahan also traveled widely, preaching in conferences and churches across the United States and beyond. His ministry was marked by a clear and unwavering emphasis on Christ, not the preacher, but the One preached. Those who heard him recognized that his sermons honored the Savior and exalted the name of the Lord Jesus Christ above all.

Henry T. Mahan served as pastor and teacher of Thirteenth Street Baptist Church in Ashland, Kentucky for over half a century. His life and ministry were devoted to proclaiming the sovereign grace of God and directing sinners to the finished work of Christ. He entered into the presence of the Lord in 2019, leaving behind a lasting testimony to the gospel he faithfully preached.
