What does the Bible say about the church's purpose?

The Bible emphasizes that the church is meant to be a house of worship, not a place for entertainment.

The Bible portrays the church primarily as a house of prayer and worship rather than a venue for entertainment. In John 2:16, Jesus indicates that His Father's house should not be treated as a marketplace. This highlights the essential purpose of the church as a sacred space for genuine worship and fellowship among believers, tasked with proclaiming the truth of God's Word rather than providing amusement. When the church drifts into a focus on entertainment, it compromises its mission and undermines the transformative power of the Gospel.

John 2:16

How do we know the church has strayed from its mission?

Signs of straying include prioritizing entertainment over genuine worship and biblical teaching.

We can identify when the church strays from its true mission by observing its priorities. If the focus shifts from biblical teaching and authentic worship to amusement and entertainment, it indicates a problem. A.W. Tozer critiques the contemporary church as becoming a 'religious theater', where the Word of God is compromised for the sake of making services more appealing. This approach neglects the serious nature of worship and the weight of truth amidst a culture that craves entertainment over edifying content. The church's mandate is not to entertain but to proclaim God's truth, leading to transformation and spiritual maturity.
Why is biblical worship important for Christians?

Biblical worship is vital as it aligns believers with God's truth and purpose.

Biblical worship is foundational for Christians because it places them in a posture of humility and reverence before God. It is through worship that believers can express their love, gratitude, and devotion to God, while also receiving His guidance and strength. Worship that is rooted in Scripture allows believers to engage deeply with God's character and His plans for humanity. When the church's purpose is diluted by a focus on entertainment, it risks producing a community that lacks depth in faith and understanding of God's holiness. Therefore, genuine worship is essential for spiritual health and growth in the Christian life.

"And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise." - John 2:16

Christianity to the average evangelical church member is simply an avenue to a good and pleasant time, with a little biblical devotional material thrown in for good measure!

I hope I do not live to see the day when God has to turn from men and women who have heard His holy truth and have played with it, fooled with it and equated it with fun and entertainment and religious nonsense!

The church has become a religious theater where amateur entertainers are paid to amuse those who attend.

In many churches, Christianity has been watered down until the solution is so weak, that . . .
if it were poison — it would not hurt anyone; and
if it were medicine — it would not cure anyone!
