What does the Bible say about adorning the doctrine of God?

The Bible teaches that believers can adorn the doctrine of God by demonstrating a meek and quiet spirit.

According to Titus 2:9-10, believers are encouraged to show obedience and good fidelity in their actions, which serves to adorn the doctrine of God our Savior. This adornment comes from our attitudes, with 1 Peter 3:4 highlighting the value of a meek and quiet spirit. Such an attitude contrasts sharply with worldly behaviors such as strife and disobedience, which are condemned in Romans 1. By promoting peace and practicing obedience to authority, believers embody the grace of the gospel, making it more attractive to others.

Titus 2:9-10, 1 Peter 3:4, Romans 1

Why is it important for Christians to exhibit a meek and quiet spirit?

Exhibiting a meek and quiet spirit is crucial for Christians as it adorns the gospel and reflects God's character.

A meek and quiet spirit is significant for Christians as described in 1 Peter 3:4; it is seen as precious in God's sight. This attitude not only glorifies God but also creates a harmonious environment for those around us, making cohabitation and relationships smoother. By contrasting the behavior of the wicked—as outlined in Romans 1—with our call to peacefulness and obedience, we highlight the transformative power of the gospel in our lives. Such behavior not only reflects our faith but also provides an inviting witness to others who observe our lives as representatives of Christ.

1 Peter 3:4, Romans 1

How do we know that our attitudes can influence others regarding the gospel?

Our attitudes can significantly influence others' perception of the gospel by either reflecting its truth or conflicting with it.

The influence of our attitudes on others' perceptions of the gospel is rooted in our conduct as believers. Titus 2:9-10 exhorts servants to behave in ways that adorn the doctrine of God, thereby showcasing the transformative nature of the gospel through our daily interactions. When believers exhibit a spirit of peace and obedience, as counter to the divisive behavior highlighted in Romans 1, they provide a living testimony of Christ's grace. This kind of attitude not only honors God but also attracts others, showing them the intrinsic value of the gospel we profess.

Titus 2:9-10, Romans 1

Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things. - Titus 2:9-10

How does a person  “adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things”? (Titus 2:10) By the attitude we show to others.  Peter tells us that the believer’s adorning is a “meek and quiet spirit.” (I Peter 3:4) A believer adorns the gospel we believe by acting with a mild, gentle and quiet spirit, which is the opposite of the way of the flesh.

The attitude of the wicked is described in Romans 1 as full of debate (stirring up strife), being a whisperer (talking about other behind their back), being a backbiter, being a despiteful person, and being disobedient to authority.

A child of God can go a long way toward adorning the gospel we believe simply by promoting peace not strife, being agreeable and not arguing against everything, and by being obedient to the authority God has placed over us.  Peter said that kind of adorning attitude  “is in the sight of God of great price.” (I Peter 3:4) That kind of adorning attitude is also of great price to those who live around us too because when we have this adorning attitude we make it much easier for others to live with us.
