Things Never Change
I have given up being excited about the New Year for some time now because I have found that nothing changes except the number on the calendar. Men will make New Year’s resolutions to do better, but they won’t do it. Men will keep sinning and rebelling against God the same way they always have. “The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9-10)
More importantly, I know that I will continue to sin the same way I always have. Even though I have been born again by God the Holy Spirit, I can’t do anything but sin because I am still carrying around the old nature of the flesh. The number on the calendar will change, but my need of forgiveness, mercy, and grace from God will never change as long as I am in the flesh.
I am thankful that another thing will never change: God will never change. “For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.” (Malachi 3:6) In this new year, God’s mercies will still be new every morning. (Lamentations 3:23) God will still love His people with an everlasting love. (Jeremiah 31:3) God will still never leave nor forsake His people. (Hebrews 13:5) God will still work all things together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28) Thank God that He will always be the unchanging object of saving faith!
