What does the Bible say about the death of Christ?

The Bible teaches that the death of Christ was pleasing to God, fulfilling His justice and mercy.

The death of Christ holds profound significance in Christian theology, as it not only satisfied the divine justice of God but also pleased His merciful nature. According to Isaiah 53:10, it 'pleased the Lord to bruise Him,' indicating that every attribute of the Father found pleasure in the sacrificial death of Christ. This unique moment in history allowed God to be both just in punishing sin and the justifier of the ungodly who believe in Christ's atoning work.

Isaiah 53:10

How do we know that Christ's death was necessary for our salvation?

Christ's death was necessary as it paid the debt for sin, satisfying God's justice.

The necessity of Christ's death is rooted in the requirement for justice in God's character. Since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), a penalty was required for that sin. Christ, as the perfect sacrificial Lamb, bore the sins of His people and suffered until the debt was paid in full. This is affirmed in Romans 4:25, which states, 'He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.' Thus, His death not only secured salvation but also demonstrated the depths of God's mercy and grace.

Romans 3:23, Romans 4:25

Why is God's justice important for Christians?

God's justice is crucial as it underscores the seriousness of sin and the need for atonement.

God's justice is foundational to the Christian faith, as it emphasizes that sin cannot be overlooked or ignored. It carries great weight in understanding the atonement because every transgression is deserving of punishment. In Christ's death, God's justice is fully satisfied, allowing Him to remain just while also justifying those who believe. For Christians, this truth assures us that God deals with sin righteously, and through Christ, we have assurance of forgiveness and acceptance into His presence. This balance of justice and grace fosters a deep reverence for God's holiness among believers.

Romans 3:26

“It pleased the Lord to bruise Him.”  – Isaiah 53:10

The death of Christ pleased every attribute of the Father.  The death of Christ pleased God’s wisdom. The death of Christ enables God to be both just and justifier.  The death of Christ pleased God’s justice.   Christ suffered for the sin of His people until the debt was paid in full. The death of Christ pleased God’s mercy and grace.  The death of Christ enables God to be merciful to His people in justice because their sin has been put away.  Since Christ died God can justify the ungodly, God can forgive sin, and God can accept His people into His presence because He is pleased with them in Christ.
