What does the Bible say about God's will in our afflictions?

The Bible teaches that all afflictions are divinely ordered by God for our good and His glory.

According to Scripture, nothing happens outside of God's sovereign will, including our afflictions. Romans 8:28 assures us that all things work together for good for those who love God, indicating that even our trials are part of His divine plan. These experiences are intended to draw us closer to Christ and to help us realize our reliance on Him. Understanding this profound truth can transform the way we perceive our hardships, recognizing them as blessings that ultimately lead us into deeper fellowship with Jesus.

Romans 8:28, 2 Corinthians 12:9

How do we know that God's providence controls our suffering?

Scripture repeatedly affirms that God's providence governs all aspects of our lives, including our suffering.

The doctrine of providence posits that God is actively involved in sustaining and governing all His creation. From the fall of sparrows to the trials we face, nothing is outside His control. Ephesians 1:11 states that He works all things according to the counsel of His will. This means that our suffering is not random or meaningless but is instead part of His perfect plan. The comfort we derive from this truth is that our pains are purposefully embedded within the framework of God's overarching plan for His glory and our good, reminding us that He is our sovereign protector.

Ephesians 1:11, Matthew 10:29-31

Why is accepting trials with trust in God important for Christians?

Accepting trials with trust is vital as it deepens our reliance on God and affirms His sovereignty.

For Christians, accepting trials is essential because it reflects our understanding of God’s sovereignty and trust in His plan. When we view our challenges through the lens of God's covenant, as William Romaine alludes to, they become avenues through which the Lord teaches and humbles us. The trials we face are opportunities for growth and reliance on Jesus, who is our source of strength and comfort. Embracing this perspective helps us to cultivate an attitude of gratitude and joy, as we learn to see God's hand working in every situation, which ultimately fosters a deeper relationship with Him.

Romans 5:3-5, James 1:2-4

    My dear friend,

Your frequent afflictions are His sweet lessons. It is the proper work of the grace of Jesus to humble the proud sinner, to make him and to keep him sensible of his needs, convinced always that he has not any good of his own and cannot possibly of himself obtain any - but what he must be receiving every moment out of the fullness of Jesus.

All providences, sicknesses, losses, successes - are only so far blessings, as they lead us more out of ourselves, into the fullness of Jesus.

The Lord having appointed you for His heavenly kingdom, has also appointed all the steps which are to lead you there. Your every affliction is in the covenant. Your sicknesses, your failings, your disappointments - there is not one thing that thwarts your will, that is not in God's will. Nothing can befall you but what is:

  1. divinely ordered,
  2. contrived for you by infinite wisdom,
  3. brought upon you by infinite love!

Oh, for eyes to see, for a heart to receive all God's dealings with you in this covenant view. How sweet would be your many trials, if you found them all appointed and managed for you by the best of friends! Learn to receive them thus.

To the care of His dear loving heart I commend you and yours,
    William Romaine
