Do You Desire to Be Saved?

Do you have a real desire to be saved, or do you merely desire to escape the consequence of your sin? The common desire of all men is to escape Hell, to escape the consequence and punishment of their sin. But this is no desire to be saved. The desire to be saved is not common but uncommon and only the elect of God have it. The desire to be saved is first of all and above all a desire to be saved from the practice of sin, a desire to be holy and a desire to do God's will no matter what that will may be. It is a desire that "rejoice in hope of the glory of God, And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also, knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us" (Rom 5:2-5). This may rule us all out.
