What does the Bible say about free will?

The Bible teaches that human will operates under God's sovereignty, and not all choices lead to salvation.

Scripture emphasizes that human beings are bound by sin and cannot choose God without divine intervention (Romans 3:10-12). The concept of free will, as understood in an Arminian context, is incompatible with the doctrine of total depravity, which asserts that fallen humanity is unable to respond to God without the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, God's sovereign election is key in ensuring that His chosen ones are brought to faith (Ephesians 1:4-5). Therefore, while humans act willfully, their choices are ultimately under God's divine plan and decree.

How do we know God's sovereignty is true?

God's sovereignty is affirmed throughout the scriptures, showcasing His ultimate authority over all creation.

God's sovereignty is a foundational doctrine of Reformed theology, evidenced by numerous biblical passages that illustrate His dominion over all things. For example, in Isaiah 46:9-10, God declares that He is the one who declares the end from the beginning, signifying that His plans cannot be thwarted. Furthermore, Romans 8:28 teaches that all things work together for good for those who love Him, emphasizing His sovereign purpose in guiding the course of history and individual lives. The consistent portrayal of God as the ultimate authority supports the belief that everything happens according to His divine will and purpose.

Why is election important for Christians?

Election assures Christians of their security in Christ, highlighting God's grace in salvation.

The doctrine of election is crucial for Christians as it emphasizes God's initiative in salvation and highlights the centrality of grace. Ephesians 1:4-5 asserts that God chose believers in Christ before the foundation of the world, illustrating that salvation is not based on human merit but solely on God's sovereign choice. This understanding fosters assurance and humility among believers, recognizing that their standing before God is not upheld by their own efforts but by His unchanging grace. Additionally, the teaching of election encourages deep thanksgiving and worship, as believers see their salvation as a gift derived entirely from God’s love and mercy.

Ephesians 1:4-5

Many confess free-will shibboleths without ever having studied the scriptures on the issue and knowing the implications of their words.  I do believe for sure that haters of God's sovereign election, once confronted with the truth, give evidence of God hardening their hearts against the gospel.
