Well, I thank you for having
me. And I could start home right now.
I'm perfectly satisfied with what I heard. There's just one
hope, just one. I listened to men and women talk,
especially at funerals. It makes me want to throw up. I listen to them and the things
that they're talking about and no hope, shallow, no substance
to it, nothing, leaving this world forever, forever. And the things that they say
to one another to comfort one another, I bet dad's up there
fishing right now. My soul, my soul, no substance,
none whatsoever. If you will, turn with me to
Philippians chapter four. When you preach last at a Bible
conference, you find yourself asking this question, what can I say after everything's
been said? I preached everything I knew
the first night. I repeated it some on the second
go around. But what do you say after everything's
been said? I don't want to say anything
to distract from what you've already heard. I wouldn't have
one sentence taken away from it. It was wonderful. And I would
not add or take away from the glorious gospel of Christ by
talking about some foolish something that's not going to make a bit
of difference. So what does a man say when everything has been
said? Well, I'll say to you what Paul
said to the Philippians here in chapter 4 and verse 1. Stand fast in the Lord. Stand fast in the Lord. Paul loved these little assemblies.
I love, he told you exactly right. I love, I'd go by every church
all the way up here if I could. I love seeing them. I don't get
to see them very often and I love stopping in and visiting. And
Paul did, he loved these little assemblies that he wrote to and
he wanted nothing for them but the best. He wanted, he was concerned
about their spiritual welfare, he was concerned about their
spiritual health. And he wrote to them, he'd do
anything, he'd say things to encourage them. And most of the
time while he was down in a jail cell, writing to these churches. He loved them. He likened them
to God's husbandry. His husbandry. That verse you
spoke of a while ago, he starts out one of those chapters there
in John and he said, my father's the husband man. I'm the vine. God has a garden and in that
garden he put a vine. One vine. Everything he's going
to take from that garden has to do with that vine. He's going
to graft us in, put us in that vine. He said these little assemblies
were God's husbandry. They were God's building. And
then he said his ministers are fellow laborers. They help to
water that garden. Give me a little water can and
every now and then I can water, I can water. And I'll tell you this, everything
that we're doing here right now, everything that constitutes a
reason for this assembly to be here, supersedes anything else
in this world. It takes precedence over anything
else in this world. I don't care what it is. I don't
care how heart-wrenching it is. Don't let anything in this world
distract you from what you're doing right here. Don't do it. Don't do it. Preaching to Paul was not just
a vocation, it was a burning necessity and the desire of his
heart. I remember Brother Mahan telling
me one time, if you can do anything else, go do it. Go do it. Ministers are sent to minister.
To minister. Preachers get all swelled up
sometimes and they think they're somebody. We're nobody. We're
just servants. We're just ministers. Sent here
to minister. Sent to minister to men and women's
hearts. I can't do that by myself. I
can't do that by myself. But God's promised His presence
with us, John. And if his presence is here,
if he attends this gospel and he promised that he would, boy,
he can speak to your heart. He'll speak to your head, but
he'll go past your head. He'll go to your heart. Now, if those things of mine
listen to how he writes this letter, therefore, therefore,
my brethren, dearly beloved, and long for, my joy, my crown. And with those things in mind,
stand fast in the Lord. My dearly beloved. He uses that
word dearly beloved twice in that verse. Children of God, they're dearly
beloved. We love one another. Now remember what I said to you
about these therefores. Look, see what it's there for.
And this standing fast in the Lord rests on everything that
he had written in the first three chapters. And so I hope in this closing
message that it would rest upon all that's been said. Because
that's what's on my mind and my heart. I want you to rest. I want this message to rest upon
everything that we've said. And I hope you'll remember what's
been said about the work of God in us and the work of Christ
for us and the work of Christ through us. I hope you'll remember
those things. It's my hope and prayer that
your thoughts, as I speak to you this morning, will incorporate
the mind of Christ, the illumination of the Spirit, and the unconditional
surrender of the soul to our loving, gracious King of Glory.
I hope these things will take place. And I hope as I talk to
you about standing fast in the Lord, it'll be mixed with the
work of grace in you. and a desire to spend and be
spent to apprehend that for which we've been apprehended. Therefore, he said, stand fast
in the Lord. And this is my text, this is
my message, this is the title, and this is the outline. Stand
fast in the Lord. All right, let's look at these
five words and see what the Lord has for us. The Holy Ghost begins
His exhortation with the word, stand. Stand. When a man stands, his standing
is only as good as what he's standing on. Is that right? Lots of people
He said, beware when a man thinks he stands, he's ready to take
a fall. His standing is only as good
as what he's standing on. And here he tells us to stand
fast in the Lord. Now if a man stands fast in the
Lord, what does that mean? What a man stands on dictates
how his life is arranged, doesn't it? It dictates how his life
is arranged. My life, when I first heard the
gospel, my life wasn't arranged around these things. It wasn't
arranged around worship. It wasn't arranged around the
scriptures. It was arranged around the things
of this world. jobs and families and all of
these things. When a man stands in the Lord
Jesus Christ, stands there by faith, it dictates how his life
is arranged. He starts rearranging. I'll never forget, Henry called
me. I had the best job that I ever
had in my life. He called me up and we had our
first house. First house ever. And Henry called
me and he said, you need to sell your house and quit your job
and move up here. I rented your house out here in the parking
lot. I said, okay. Okay, so I did. And got up there, had no idea
how I was gonna make a living. Had no idea. Went up there. He
said, folks around here in the church, he said, they all have
things that need to be done in their house. And he said, you
can just work and start remodeling and doing things for them. And
then when I go out, you can go with me, help drive me. And I
got the privilege to do that. What a person stands on dictates
how his life is arranged. It dictates his relationships. It does. It dictates your relationships. My desire is to be with the children
of God. Do I hate my family? No. No. But I have nothing in common
with them. I mean, some of them like to fish and I like to fish.
We can talk about fishing, but that don't last very long when
they know you're a preacher. And as soon as we get on that,
boy, that's it. We're done. I love being around the children
of God, don't you? You're walking on eggshells around
me, and I'm not an eggshell walker. I'm just not very good at it.
But I don't have to walk on eggshells around you. We've got everything in common.
Our Lord we have in common. His reign of grace. His gospel. His love. That hope. Man, we can share that. We can
share that. Somebody gets down, you can encourage
them. Somebody needs help, you can give to them. I've got nothing in common with
natural men except my sin. I'm a sinner. I'm a sinner. And my hope is to be with Christ.
I want to spend eternity with Him. I expect, as John said,
based on the promises of God, to spend eternity with Him. That's my hope. And that hope
rests entirely Now, we say that a lot, but I wonder how much
we really understand about what that means. My hope rests entirely
on him. He took those children through
the wilderness. And they said, he just brought
us out here, starved us to death. It wasn't after very long, got
a little bit hungry. Then they got thirsty. Then the
clothes was wearing out. One thing right, just murmur,
murmur, murmur, murmur, murmur, that's the way we do it. I used to get so mad before I
knew the Lord, I'd read those things, man, if I was God, I'd
kill every one of them. I found out that's me, that's
me he's talking about over here. Our hope rests entirely on him,
and my life here is geared to that end. to that end. And I know that one day we should
be divided permanently as we're divided spiritually with this
world here and now. We're gonna be divided permanently.
And it's a miserable thing to be separated from somebody you
love. It's miserable, miserable. And
believers long to be together. They long for their fellowship. We use that term pretty loosely,
too, don't we? Y'all do the same thing we do.
We call that, going back there, we call that fellowship. That's
not fellowship. Henry told me years ago, he said,
you know what fellowship is? It's fellers in the same ship.
That's fellowship. We fellowship around him. We fellowship around the gospel.
And if we can sit down and eat and feast together and rejoice
together so much the more. But our fellowship's right here.
Right here. Kindred spirits. Fellowship. We love to get together and I
do. I long to assemble together either
here or at home and think about these blessings of God, talk
about these blessings of God. It dictates our relationships. And it also does this, it dictates
where we live. It does. Why would I want to live anywhere
except where I could be with God's people? Huh? Why would I do that? Why would
I want to live anywhere except where I can be with God's people,
my brethren, fellow heirs of God, people I'm going to spend
eternity with. Why would I want to be anywhere
else? And I cherish being among God's people. I'm the happiest
when we're gathered together and talking to one another. And
I reap the benefits of it. There's benefits involved in
assembling together. We have friends. They comfort
you. They encourage you. They can
tell. They know what's going on. And you get in a bind to help
you. I reap the benefits of it. And
I'm encouraged and loved and helped. And I need it. And then what a person stands
upon dictates how his life is arranged. And what a person stands
on dictates his attitude in all things. Everything. Everything. His job,
his family, his responsibilities, how he acts under pressure, how
he acts under persecution, how he acts under trials. It dictates
our attitude in all things. This work that God does in you
is His work. Now He don't believe for you,
you believe. But you couldn't believe except
He worked in you. Is that right? This work in you is the work
of God and God intends to prove it. He's gonna prove it to be his
work. Somebody said, well, I'm a believer. We'll see. We'll see. Save me in four or five years.
We'll talk about it again. God intends to prove this. Our
Lord arranges and controls providence. He could easily arrange it so
your life would be trouble free. It wouldn't be a bitter problem
for Him to do that. But He doesn't because He's going
to prove this work in you through trials and persecution. Listen
to this. Here's what Paul told the Corinthians.
These people had trouble. They had trouble, deep trouble,
bad trouble. And here's what Paul told them.
He told them about the preaching of the gospel. He told them about
God's purpose. Of God are you in Christ Jesus,
who of God is made unto us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification,
and redemption. That according as it's written,
he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. He told them all
them things. And then he got down here and
he talked about himself being a minister of God. fellow laborer,
and he gets down here and he talks about that work that's
going on. That work that God's doing among
his people. And he said, Every man's work
shall be made manifest, for the day shall declare it, because
it shall be revealed by fire. And the fire shall try every
man's work of what sort it is. Is it his work or is it God's
work? God's going to prove his work.
His work will go through the fire. That old king ran down
and looked in that furnace, and there's those three Hebrew children.
And he said, there's three men in there, in the fire. Four. One like unto the Son of God.
How'd he know who the Son of God was? He gonna prove his worth. Throw
me in the lion's den. I'll lay down with him to sleep.
If it's God's worth. He gonna prove his worth. And I tell you this, you can
fool me. I'm easy fool, easy fool. Man looks on the outward
countenance. I see you and you're smiling
and I look on, I can't see the heart, but God does. He looks
on the heart. And you fool me, but you can't
fool God. And brethren, it's hard to talk
about believing in an almighty God and then run hiding hole
every time a storm cloud gets in the sky. Oh, I believe Almighty
God controls all things. And then we run hide and hold.
Hide from that storm. You can't hide from God. I like to watch these crazy things
on TV and I was watching these things about storms one night
and one of the things had a fellow that stopped his car and there
was a tornado coming. I mean it was right on him and
he just stopped the car and he ran up under a bridge and he
crawled up on that little thing between two girders and just
got up there like that and the storm went through, wrecked his
car, but he come out safe. Somebody saw that on TV and they
were in the same situation in another state and they decided
that's what they're gonna do. So they stopped that car, and
they ran up there, and they did the very same thing he did. They
got up there between those girders, and that storm sucked him out
of there, and there was a silhouette where he was like this. There
was a silhouette sandblasted in that stone where that man
was. You can't hide from God, but he don't need a tornado to
get you. He can get you a little old bug. He can get you something
you can't see. You can't hide from God. What a man stands on dictates
how he worships. Believers don't worship God to
suit their feelings. Well, I feel like it ought to
be this way. It's got nothing to do with it. Believers worship as they're
instructed of God. And they who worship God must
worship Him in spirit and in truth. No other way to worship
God. And what a person stands on dictates
how his life is arranged. And then the person who stands
is a person who knows what he's standing on. He's not ignorant.
He's not guessing. He knows. He knows. John said, we know that the Son
of God hath come. and has given us an understanding
that we may know him that's true and that we're in him that's
true. This is the true God in eternal life. We know. Paul said, I'm persuaded that he's able to keep that which
I've committed unto him against that day. We know. John said again, we are of God.
He that knoweth God, heareth us. If you don't know God, you're
not going to hear anything. But if you know God, you're going
to hear His ministers. You're going to hear. He told them this. He said,
you have an auction of the Holy One and know all things. Does that mean God just Takes
that invisible cup of wisdom and pours it in your head? No.
That means when that man of God speaks to you and you say, that's
it. That's it. How do you know that's it? You
have an unction from the Holy One. That's right. You know all things. Let me ask you something. Can
you step out of this flesh and stand on him that you can't see? who reigns in glory. Can you
do that? Can you stand on Him? Stand on
Him. All right, thirdly, to stand
in the Lord is to walk by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. I just
love, you quoted a piece of it a while ago, I love what Paul
says in Romans 7. And down in verse 24, he said,
oh, wretched man that I am. I remember Henry years ago, he'd
quote that and he'd say, oh, wretched man that I used to be.
And then he'd look down over them glasses. It ain't that you
used to be, he's still there. Oh, my, oh, wretched man, he's
still there. Who shall deliver me from the
body of this death, this cursed, fallen, depraved flesh, this
lustful, greedy, insatiable flesh? Who's gonna deliver me? He said, I thank God through
Jesus Christ, our Lord. So what's that mean? Well, here
it is. So then, with the mind, What
mind? The mind of Christ. The mind
of Christ. What you gonna do? I'm gonna
serve the law of God. How you gonna do that? With the
mind of Christ. Seeing that law honored and exalted
in him, kept in every jot and tittle. I'm not at odds with the law.
Law's been satisfied. Law's been exalted and honored.
And you can't honor the law. Now, before you go getting all
self-righteous and trying to keep the law, let me tell you
something. You can't honor that law any more than you can by
believing in the Lord Jesus Christ. You can't do it. Can't do it. honored and exalted that law,
lifted that law up. He gave the law, and then he
kept the law, and then he honored the law in his death, and then
he rose. With the law, I serve, I mean
with the mind of Christ, I serve the law of God, but with the
flesh, the law of sin. That just so ain't it? And there's only one way to serve
the law of God, and to honor the law of God, and to satisfy
the law of God, and that's through the person and work of Jesus
Christ. And there's only one way to walk
in this world and honor God, and that is with the mind of
Christ. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus
our Lord. And then fourthly, to stand in
the Lord is to walk in grace and truth. Take away grace and
truth that the believers did in the water. He can't do anything. Our Lord said without me you
can do nothing. You can't do it. You can't do the simplest
thing. You can't pray without Him. You can't walk without Him. You can't think. You can't reason
without Him. Come let us reason together,
saith the Lord. You can't reason without Him.
You can't do anything. And if He reasons with you, it's
going to be an act of grace in you. Take away grace, we're dead
in the water. Take away truth, I don't have
any basis for what I believe. Can't talk, can't walk, can't
worship, can't do anything. And then fifthly, to stand in
the Lord is to rest your full dependency on Him. He's talking about these weak
brethren. And he said, to their own master, they stand or they
fall. Yeah, he's able to make them
stand. He's able to make them stand. Peter said, humble yourselves,
therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you
in due time, casting all your care on him, for he careth for
you. I heard a story one time about
a man. It was way up in one of the northern states, and it was
late in the year, and he was hitchhiking. Had a big old backpack
on. He was hitchhiking, and he stepped
out there by the road, put his thumb out. Nobody's picking him
up, and he's just standing there for hours and hours and hours.
It was getting ready to snow, and it was getting really cold.
And finally, this big old car pulled over, Told him, come on,
get in. So he ran over and opened the
door. And as he got in, the man turned
to look for the traffic. And then he pulled out. And when
he turned around, this guy's got this big old backpack on
him. He's sitting in the seat like this. And he said, just
take your backpack off. Throw it back there in the back
seat. Oh, no, he said, you were kind enough to pick me up. I'll
carry my own pack. Well, he's carrying you and the
pack. Ah, Christ is carrying you and
your burdens, but if you want to carry him, you won't be miserable. Go away. But he said, cast your
care on him, Peter said. He'd been there, hadn't he? Cast
your care on him, he cares for you. You don't have to carry
that pack. To stand in the Lord is to put
your full dependency upon Him. So that's first thing, stand.
And then secondly, stand fast. Stand fast, he said. What's that
mean? Securely grounded, that's what
that means. One object fastened securely
to another. I don't know if you've ever thought
about this, but believers are bound to their Savior. They're together. They're bound.
They're bound. They're bound there by an inseparable
union. God put them in Christ. Your
life is hid with Christ in God. Isn't that what he says in Colossians
3? We're all one. We want to look
at each other and think about all these individuals. We're
one in Christ. We're one. He didn't live for
one person at a time, did he? He didn't die for one person
at a time. He didn't justify us or glorify
us one at a time. He did it all at once. Listen to how he prayed before
he went to the cross. He prayed this high priestly
prayer, and he prayed that they all might be one. All might be
one, as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they
also may be one in us. They're one. That the world might
believe that thou sent me. And God's people are one. And
when he delivered Israel out of Egypt, he didn't leave a hoof
or a hair behind, did he? He wouldn't allow a dog to bark
in resistance to him. Every dog in Egypt just sat there,
wagging their tail, watching Israel walk out of Egypt. He said, I and them and thou
and me, that they may be made perfect in one. And when our
Lord rose from the dead, He tells us in Ephesians chapter 2, that
He raised us up, now listen, together. And now we see it. He didn't raise you up, John,
and then say, well, I may raise him up, I may not. No, He raised
us up together, all of us. with him, and listen, and made
us sit together with him in heavenly places. Isn't that something? We're one. We're one. What's that mean? That means
there's no division. That's what that means. If that word creeps up on you,
comes in your head, you spit it out. You get rid of it. Shake
it off. There are no divisions in Christ. We're one. We're one. Yeah, but I'm hurt. Shake it
off. Get over it. There are no divisions
in Christ. What if there were? What if there
were? I'd be the first to fall. No
divisions. If any man draw back, my soul
shall have no pleasure in him. Listen, we're not of them that
draw back to perdition. We're of them that believe to
the saving of the soul. There are no divisions in Christ. Christ and his body, it's one. One. All that the Father giveth me
shall come to me. And him that cometh to me, I
will in no wise cast out. He may let you walk a little
bit, but he'll get you. He'll bring you back. I raised
kids. They'd take off for a fire ant
hill down south, you know, go out and sit down on a fire ant
hill or something, a little toddler, and get him, bring him back.
That's what we do. We're a bunch of kids, a bunch
of ignorant kids. They told them kids, our Lord
was sitting there talking to those kids. Those kids were talking
to him and they said, Shush, get out of here. He said, no,
wait a minute. He picked one up and set him
on his lap. He said, until you be like him, you're not gonna
enter the kingdom of God. We're just kids. Lord, he just
gets you and brings you back, don't he? Huh? We're gonna have
trouble. We're gonna have differences
of opinion. We're gonna have all kinds of problems. But I
don't care. We're saved by grace, aren't
we? Sure we are. What kind of grace? He says his
grace rains. Raining grace. It don't stand
up there with a bullwhip, cracking a bullwhip. It rains in love. It rains in the heart. There
are no divisions in Christ. My soul. What are we talking
about? We're talking about standing. Standing. Stand fast in the Lord. Securely fastened to Him. Two objects, immovable. They're
not coming apart. Stand as one. Stand as one. What happens when they do? Well,
here's what John said. They went out from us. Some do. Some do. And you know who they are? The
ones I never thought would ever do it. I had a fellow came there,
came there for years. He was a structural engineer.
Brilliant man. Sat there, big tears. I preached
his wife's funeral. She died of cancer. And he said,
I hope you live long enough to preach my funeral. Man, he sat
there. One day he got up and left. I
thought he was sick. I thought something was wrong
with him. I called him up. I hadn't seen him in three or
four weeks. I called him up and I said, what? Are you sick? You got problems? What's going
on? No, just decided to go somewhere else to church. That's all. They went out and promised. And here's the thing. It don't
matter where you're at. His body's just one body, isn't
it? It's just a little piece here. This is a little, like
a figure of the body, this little assembly here. His assembly,
no man can number. But we're one. We're one, all
of us are one. What happens if you leave that?
Well, they went out from us, he said, but they were not of
us. If they had been of us, now listen,
they no doubt would have continued with us. But they went out that
they might be made manifest that they were not of us. That hurts. It breaks my heart. I've seen
it so many times. God put us into an eternal union
with his son, and we're all one in him. We don't divide. We don't
separate. We're bound to him by spiritual
union through regeneration. Christ in you, the hope of glory. We don't divide. I've seen since I started, since
I heard the gospel, put it that way. I've seen people separate,
start whole new works somewhere. Just over divisions that don't
amount to a hill of beans. I'm gonna go over here. I'll start a new work. That's
why this world's full of churches. It's full of them. There's nothing a child of God
can do to me that I have not done to the Lord. and for which
he has not forgiven me. He didn't throw me away, didn't
exile me. He forgave me and he loved me
and he was merciful to me. Is it so hard then for me to
love someone else and forgive someone else? Is it so hard for me to be tenderhearted
Is it so difficult for me to forgive another? Be kind one
to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God, for
Christ's sake, hath forgiven you. All right, preacher. How can a poor, sinful wretch
like me stand fast? You're telling me stand fast.
How can I do it? How can I do it? That's my third
point. I told you that in my outline.
Stand fast, now listen, in the Lord. You can't do it no other
way. Stand fast in the Lord. And here's
Paul's confidence in the Philippians. Here's this group of people and
he loves them. He knows them individually. He
talks about them by name. He knows them. Prayed for them
continually. Night and day, he said. Praying
for them. Thinking about them. Preaching
to them. Writing to them. Well, what's
his confidence? What's his confidence? Well,
here's what he says. Verse 6. Philippians chapter
one. That he which hath begun a good
work in you will perform it unto the day of Jesus Christ. That's my confidence. That's
my confidence in my assembly at home. That's my confidence
in this assembly here. He which hath begun a good work
in you He's not gonna quit. He's not gonna quit. He's gonna
keep right on. He's gonna keep right on. Salvation's
in the Lord. Listen to this. Paul said, take
unto you the whole armor of God. The whole armor of God that you
might be able to withstand in the evil day. And having done all, what's he
say? Stand. Damn. And I believe this standing has
to do with the risen, victorious, reigning Lord of glory. Can you see him by faith, seated
at the right hand of God? He went there with his own blood
and listen, obtained, he's not trying to get it, he's not hoping
to get it, he obtained eternal redemption for us. He's not up
there pacing back and forth, wondering whether or not ringing
his alarm, I hope they'll continue. He's expecting till his enemies
be made his footstool, he sat down, he ain't worried. He ain't
worried. Can you stand fast in the Lord?
Stand under His authority and in His righteousness and by His
blood and in the faith of Christ? Well, let me tell you something.
If you can't stand now, you won't stand then. That's just so. John was carried by the Spirit
out on the Isle of Patmos and the Lord let him peak right into
heaven. Wow, there was things there, you know, he told John,
he said, put your pen up. They're not ready for this yet,
just put your pen. But he did let him write some
things, didn't he? He peered right into heaven itself
and he looked and he saw a multitude standing over in Revelation 7,
9 through 12. He saw a great multitude standing
that no man could number and they were standing before the
throne, John. It amazes me that we just have
access to speak to God. These are standing before the
throne. The angels aren't standing before
the throne, they're on their faces. But these are standing
before the throne of God. And they all cried, all these,
they all cried with a loud voice, salvation to our God, which sitteth
upon the throne and unto the land. And all the angels fell
on their faces and worshiped God. And they said, amen, blessing
and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might
be unto our God. They stand there looking at these
men who were redeemed. Came up out of great tribulation. Here they are, and they're looking
at him, and they're praising God. Now here, men, I'm gonna quit.
It was his sitting, his sitting that enabled their standing. And it was their standing that
glorified his sitting. Isn't that so? Stand fast in
the Lord. Stand fast. Don't you do anything
any different than you did when you first looked to Christ. You just keep looking. Don't
you do anything, don't you change your character, don't you change
your countenance. You keep right on just a sinner
saved by grace. Being kind and merciful. Understanding
God's saving us. He's, we ain't gonna save yet.
He's saving us. He's saving us. And that hope
just grows and grows and grows. Growing grace, knowledge of the
Lord Jesus Christ. We grow, we grow. But don't change. Don't run off to a new doctrine.
Don't do it. You stay right there. You stay
within the means, you stay within the purpose, you stay right where
God called you, right where he put you. And just troubles come
up, get over it. Get over it. Go right on. You
know, this whole thing, this supersedes everything, don't
it? That's what I told you in the beginning. It supersedes
