The Servants Knew

The sermon titled "The Servants Knew," preached by Greg Elmquist, centers on the miraculous event of Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana (John 2:1-11). The preacher emphasizes the importance of obedience as seen in the actions of the servants who, following Mary's directive to "do whatever He says," filled the stone water pots to the brim. Elmquist connects the implications of this act to the sufficiency of Christ’s work in fulfilling the Law, emphasizing that our contributions or attempts at righteousness only detract from Christ's finished work. He argues that the key takeaway from this miracle is the necessity of faith in Christ alone for salvation, as highlighted in Romans 3:20-26. The practical significance lies in the call to discern between human-relegated righteousness versus the complete and perfect righteousness found in Jesus Christ, assuring believers that true salvation stems from grace through faith in Christ's atoning work.

my blessed Lord I see Thank you, Rebecca. That's a
blessing. Let's open our Bibles together
to John chapter 2. John chapter 2. That hymn reminded
me of what our Lord said to the disciples when he said, no longer
do I call you My servants, I call you my friends, for a servant
knoweth not what his master doeth. In our story this morning, the
servants knew what the master did. And I've titled this message,
The Servants Knew, The Servants Knew. John concludes his gospel account
in chapter 20 by saying many other signs did Jesus that are
not recorded in this book, but these have been recorded in order
that you might believe that Jesus is the Christ and that believing
you might have life through his name. The very first miracle
recorded in the Bible that our Lord performed was at the wedding
feast of Cana. when he turned water into wine. We're all familiar with the story. I want to focus on Mary's comments
to the servants this morning. I'm sorry, the Lord's comments
to the servants because I did this in the men's study. Mary told the servants Whatever
he says unto you, do it. Mary of all people knew who our Lord was. She knew
when pregnant with the Lord Jesus
that she had not been with a man. There was never a doubt in her
mind. At the age of 12 when Our Lord stayed behind in Jerusalem
and Mary and Joseph spent three days looking for him. And the
Lord said, why did you look around? Did you not know that I must
be about my father's business? And the scripture says that Mary
pondered these things. For 18 years after that, she
pondered. what the father's business would
be. And Mary, like all of the Jews,
would have thought that the Lord was going to establish an earthly
kingdom. So in John chapter seven, if
you'll hold your finger there in John two and turn with me
to John chapter seven, Look with me at verse three in
John chapter seven. His brethren therefore said unto
him, and this by brethren means Mary and his brothers and sisters,
his family. His brethren said unto him, depart
hence and go into Judea that thy disciples also might see
the works that thou doest. They had seen the miracles that
he performed and they're pushing him into the limelight. For they
said in verse four, for there is no man that doeth anything
in secret and he himself seeketh to be known openly. So Mary and
his brethren assume that the Lord is seeking to be known openly,
that he's seeking a following, that he's looking for the popularity
of the people. The Lord Jesus then nor now is
looking for a following. He has a people and he came to
save a particular people. He's not moved by the popular
opinions of the masses. But Mary thought, this will be
your opportunity to make yourself known, everybody will know. Look at the last part of verse
four. If thou do these things, show thyself to the world. For
neither did his brethren believe on him. Mary knew the very uniqueness of her
son. Did she understand? what he had come to do, to die
for her sins in the same way that he was dying for all his
people's sins. It seems that's not the case
in John chapter two. For when they ran out of wine
at the wedding feast, she had been pondering, as I said, for
18 years, what the father's business was. And she assumed that his
kingdom would be an earthly kingdom. And she knows now in John chapter
one, the Lord has all of his disciples. He's got the men surrounding
him that he's going to use to spread the message of the gospel.
And so she steps forward and says to her son, They're out
of wine. They're out of wine. This is your opportunity. This
is your chance to go public and to let everybody know who you
are. And he looks at his mother and
he says to her, what have I to do with thee? My time's not yet come. I'm not
on your schedule. I'm not here to do your bidding. I'm not here to gratify any interest
that you might have as to being the mother of the son of David
who will reign as an earthly king. No, to the contrary. You're here to do my bidding. I'm here to save you. Let's read it together. Verse
1 of chapter 2. And the third day there was a
marriage in Cana of Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there.
You see, she's been called out by the Holy Spirit now in writing
the scriptures as a central figure here because I think that's what's
happening with Mary's involvement. And both Jesus was called and
his disciples to the marriage. Now Cana was 10 miles from Nazareth. I'm sure they were family there
and friends and acquaintances. Everybody knew each other. And
when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus said unto him, they
have no wine. And Jesus said to her, woman,
what have I to do with thee? Mine hour is not yet come. And his mother, being corrected,
being properly rebuked, said to the servants, Whatsoever he
saith unto you, do it. And there were there six water
pots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews,
containing two or three furricans apiece, that'd be 20, 25 gallons,
and these are not standing up pots, these would be more in
the shape of a bathtub, a small bathtub, for ceremonial hand
washing. So there's six of them now in
a line. So when you show up, you begin
in the first and you go down through all of the ceremonial
water pots, washing your hands. And Jesus said unto them, fill
the water pots with water. And they filled them up to the
brim. And he saith unto them, draw
out now and bear unto the governor of the feast, and they bear it. And the ruler of the feast tasted
the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was."
The ruler of the feast didn't know where it came from. Now
the ruler of the feast and the governor are the same person.
He's the head butler, he's the one who's in charge of the entire
event. chooses the food, he decides
what's served when and where and who sits where and he's overseeing
the entire event. But the servants which drew the
water knew. The servants knew. This is life eternal that they
might know thee the only true God and Jesus Christ whom thou
has sent. The servants who obeyed the commands
of Christ knew where the wine came from. Now I want you and
I want me to see ourselves this morning in the place of these
servants. that God would give us the grace
to obey the same commands that the Lord gave to the servants.
There's three of them, three commands. Fill the water pots,
draw out and take it to the governor of the feast, and I'm sorry, that was the third. Draw out the wine, and the third,
take it to the governor of the feast. In verse 10, and saith unto him,
every man at the beginning, the governor of the feast called
the bridegroom. In verse nine, and saith unto him, every man
at the beginning doth set forth good wine, and when men have
well drunk, then that which is worse, but thou has kept the
good wine until now. And this beginning of miracles. This was the first miracle. This
was the miracle that explains all other miracles. The Lord gives us as the servants
grace to obey him in these three commands. And we'll know where
the wine came from. And these miracles will have,
this miracle in particular, will have accomplished its purpose,
that they might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the son
of the living God, and that believing they might have life through
his name. And notice in verse 11, this
beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee and manifested
forth his glory and his disciples believed on him. Three commandments. Fill the
water pots to the brim. Fill them up. And the scripture
says they filled them to the brim. You remember in middle
school science class when they taught you about surface tension of water and
the meniscus and how you would take a flask and fill it up and
look at it closely and the water would actually be just a little
bit above the rim and then you add one more drop Add one more
drop of water and all that water that's being held by surface
tension spills out. That's the way I'm looking at
these stone water pots. I mean, they had a meniscus on
them. They were filled to the brim. If you put one more drop
of water in them, they were going to overflow. What's this a picture of? The Lord Jesus said, I did not
come to destroy the law. I came to fulfill it. These water
pots are made of stone. The law of God was written by
the finger of God on tablets of stone. Our hearts are stony
hearts. And there's six, and six is the
number for man in the Bible. Man was created on the sixth
day. The number of man in the book of Revelation is 666. Could
the picture be any more clear? The servants were commanded of
God to fill the water pots and they filled them to the brim. Couldn't put any more water in
it. Now the Old Testament law did require washings, but these
washings were symbolic of spiritual truths. Who could stand before
God? He that hath clean hands and a pure heart, and has not
lifted up his soul to vanity, and so they would wash their
hands. And it's a good idea to wash your hands before you eat.
I mean, you know, for sanitary reasons, I'm sure that's the
case. But as is always the case in religion, In man-made religion,
men will take something that God gives as a sign or a symbol
and they'll make a ceremony out of it. They'll make a tradition
out of it. They'll make a ritual out of
it. They'll turn a sign into a work. In thinking that we're satisfying
the demands of the law, there was never anything in the Old
Testament about dipping your hand seven, six times before
you went to something. You see, they just expanded on
what God had given and that's what we do. We just expand on
it and we think, well, you know, I'll just do, I'll do more. Somehow
I'll be able to satisfy the demands of God's holy law. And the Lord Jesus said, not
one jot or tittle will pass from the law until it's all fulfilled. You and I have never been able
to keep any part of God's law. We try as we may. We try to add
our drop of water only to cause the glass to overflow. We try to do our part. We make rituals out of religion
and we look to our own good works and we boast in what we're doing. Go about trying to establish
our own righteousness, not knowing, ignorant as the
Bible says in Romans chapter 10 of the righteousness of God,
not knowing that Jesus Christ is the end of the law for righteousness
to everyone that believe it. He filled up the six water pots
to the brim. And the servants were commanded
to do so, and so the Lord Jesus commands me and you right now.
Don't add a drop of your good works or of your righteousness
to these water pots. They are filled to the brim.
That's what I came to do. And anything you try to add to
what I have done only robs me of my glory. And we'll condemn
you in judgment. We all come into this world self-righteous
by nature. We all go about trying to establish
our own righteousness. We're all ignorant of the righteousness
of God. before the Lord's pleased to
open the eyes of our understanding and enable us to set our affections
on things above where Christ is seated. He is seated. Why is he seated? Because he
finished the work. He finished the work. He sat
down at the right hand of the majesty on high. And whatever
you and I do to add to what he finished only takes away from
what he finished. We go about trying to clean up
the outside of the cup when the inside is full of corruption.
We go about trying to whitewash tombs when they're full of dead
men's bones. We think that we can do our part. We're like our father Abraham.
When we don't see God fulfilling his promises quick enough, well,
you know, let's put our hand to it. Let's see what we can
do to help God out. And all the stuff that you see
going on in the Middle East right now started with Abraham and
Ishmael and Hagar. Abraham thought, I'll go into
Hagar, we'll have a child. And Ishmael and Isaac have been
fighting ever since. See, people talk about the history
of the Middle East and they want to go back to 1948 or 1967. No, no, you got to go all the
way back to Abraham. You got to go all the way back
to Isaac and Ishmael because that's where it started. And
that's, and what am I saying? You try to add, you try to put
your hand to the plow and help God out in doing something to
save you. Do your part, whether it be your
faith or your righteousness or your prayers, it's gonna just
add confusion. The gospel's simple. It's simple. It's Christ, it's all, that's
the gospel. He's all and he's in all and
he did all the work all by himself. He fulfilled the law of God.
He sat down, the work's done. No more to be done, no more to
do. Rest, rest in Christ. But see, that's impossible for
the natural man. You know, there's a, those who those who teach the
false gospel of lordship salvation there's a little article in your
bulletin this morning about this but those who teach the false
gospel of Lordship salvation would have you look at your performance
for the hope of your salvation. And they call those who say just
pray this prayer as teaching a false gospel of easy believism. And easy believism would have
you look at your profession for the hope of your salvation. They're
both false gospels. One has you looking at your profession,
easy believism. The other, lordship salvation,
has you looking to your performance. And they'll both condemn us to
hell. Why? Because faith looks to Christ.
It rests in Christ. And faith is a continual... There's something in us. You
see, the self-righteousness of that Pharisee that we were born
as is still in our old man. We are all recovering Pharisees. And there's part of us that this
is why we have to keep hearing the gospel. This is why I have
to stress this, not just for the unbeliever, but for the believer.
Why? Because, Lord, help thou mine
unbelief. restrain my old man, keep me
from looking to my own self-righteousness for the hope of my salvation,
and give me grace to rest in Christ alone, to believe on Him
alone, to love Him alone, to follow Him alone, to do like
these servants. They knew where the water came
from. Why? Because they filled up the water pots. And when we
believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, what are we doing? Oh, the Lord
filled up the water pots, no doubt about it. But we are agreeing
that they are full. Servant, child of God, disciple,
believer in the Lord Jesus Christ. You want to understand this miracle? You want to have rest in Christ?
You want to have life in Him? believe that he is the end of
the law for your righteousness and that all of your righteousnesses
are as filthy rags before God. That's what the town, you know,
it goes back to, to the Tower of Babel. When they
had, the scripture says, brick for stone. So they weren't building
that tower out of stone. They were fashioning with their
dirty hands, bricks. And the scripture says they had
brick for stone and they had slime for mortar. So they went
to the tar pits And they took the slime of the tar pits, the
same thing that Noah would have used to pitch the ark, which
would have worked really good as a water repellent. The water,
the ark was pitched inside and out. And that word pitch means
covering. And so when they built this tower
at Babel, trying to work their way to heaven, they were taking
the works of their hands and putting them together with the
atonement. The problem is slime doesn't
work as mortar especially in that part of the world. I'm sure
long before it got to be 130 degrees that slime gave way and
those bricks fell. You see the wrath of God fell
on that ark in the form of water. And the wrath of God will fall
on us if we don't have the atonement, if we're not pitched within and
without with the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ for
all of our salvation. And if we look to what He did
and try to add to what He did what we're doing, that's what
most of Christianity is. Well, we gotta have Christ. Christ
is necessary for salvation, but he's not sufficient. You've got
to do your part. You've got to exercise your faith.
You've got to do this or do that. And every form of Christianity
has a different to-do list, don't they? What am I saying? These servants
knew that it was done. Done. The water pots. were full to the brim. I love the obedience of these
servants. The Lord just said, fill them
up. And they filled them to the brim. Nobody could use them as
wash pots anymore. Nobody could dip their hands
in without the water spilling out. They were filled to the
brim. What a blessing. We're just like, the Lord said
it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than
it is for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven. And yeah, as much as earthly
wealth can be a hindrance to our need for God, we all, regardless
of where we are, economically or financially we all come into
this world rich in our own righteousness, in our own contribution, in our
own works. And the Lord said it's easier
for a camel to go through the eye of a needle. You see, there's
nothing, I mentioned easy believism, there's nothing easy about believing. As a matter of fact, believing
on the Lord Jesus Christ is impossible. It's impossible. How possible is it to get a camel
through the eye of a needle? Say, well, that's not, then the
disciples said, Lord, who then can be saved? Who then can be
saved? And what did the Lord say to
the disciples? With man, it is impossible. But with God, all
things are possible. God makes his servants to see
that all their righteousnesses are as filthy rags. He makes
them to believe that the water pots have been filled to the
brim. He gives them grace to look and to rest in the Lord
Jesus Christ for all the hope of their salvation. The natural
man cannot do that. He can't do it. It's impossible
for him. Look how difficult it is for
you, child of God, to find your rest in Christ. It's impossible for one who's
not been born of the Spirit to do what these servants did,
fill the water pots to the brim. And the water is significant
here. Turn with me to Ephesians chapter five. Ephesians chapter
five. Look at verse 25. And this is
a great mystery. This is a great mystery concerning
Christ and his church. That's how this passage ends,
isn't it? A mystery is something that has to be revealed. It has
to be uncovered. Husbands, love your wives, even
as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it, that
he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing water by
his word." So the filling up to the brim
of these six water pots is the fulfillment of God's Word. You
see, men go to the Bible in hopes of finding some some trinket
of truth, some nugget of gold, some principle, some precept
that will help them to be able to get through a trial or trouble
in life or be a better person. They go to God's Word thinking
that it's nothing more than a rule book for Christian living. The
Word of God is a revelation of the Lord Jesus Christ. That's
what it is. In the volume of the book, it
is written of me. We love God's Word, but we go
to God's Word, we look to Christ, we're looking for Christ. The
Lord Jesus is the one that we follow, He's the one that enables
us. We want to obey Him, we want
to follow Him, but to take God's Word and to say precept upon
precept, line upon line, here a little, there a little, and
that passage in Isaiah chapter 28 says that they might stumble
over the Word of God. God's word is what the Lord Jesus
is and what he came to do. The living word, the word that
was made flesh. Here's the picture. The servants
knew, all servant of God, agree that the word of God, every jot
and tittle, fulfilled and that the washing of the water is a
spiritual washing it's not something I do with my hands in a bathtub
it's something that the Spirit of God does when he takes the
Word of God and makes it effectual to my heart. When he reveals
Christ to me and enables me to look to and rest in the glorious
person and finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ, there's my
salvation. Turn with me over just a few
pages to Romans chapter three. Romans chapter three. Look at verse 20 in Romans chapter
3. Therefore, by the deeds of the
law shall no flesh be justified in his sight. We justify ourselves
to ourselves and to one another, but in the sight of God? In the
sight of God? For by the law is the knowledge
of sin. So every time we read a precept
in God's law, husbands love your wives, Christ loved the church.
Lord, I want to do that, but I've never done that. My wife's saying, I've never
loved her the way Christ has loved his church. That's my heart,
that's my desire, Lord help me. You see, what does husbands love
your wives as Christ loved the church say to a believing husband? Lord, I've sinned. And so the, by the law is the knowledge of
sin. This is the law of God. It's the law of God. Love your
wives as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it. Lord,
I've never been able to do that. I've never been able to keep
that law. Love the Lord you God with all
of your heart and all of your mind and all your soul all the time.
Lord, I'm not, I'm not. Lord, you see the law of God
only exposes us for what we are. Sinners in need of a savior.
It's the law of God that causes us to see our need for Christ. But what do men do? They take
the types and pictures of scripture and they try to fulfill them
by their own works. They try to earn their way to
heaven. They try to work their way to
heaven. They try to build a tower of bricks and slime. They try
to gratify the demands of God's law rather than looking to the
only one that ever kept God's law. He is the end of the law
for righteousness. Look at verse 21, but now, but
now, The righteousness of God without the law is manifested,
being witnessed by the law and the prophets. The Lord Jesus
Christ is the manifestation of the fulfillment of the law. And
he is the one that's witnessed by the law and the prophets.
And he is the one that this miracle is about. Whatever he says to
you, do it. What's he say? Fill up the water
pots. And we fill them to the brim. even the righteousness of God
which is by faith of Jesus Christ. You're not going to establish
the righteousness of God by your faith in Jesus Christ. The righteousness
of God was established by the faithfulness of the Lord Jesus
Christ. Unto all And upon all them that
believe there's no difference for all have sinned and come
short of the glory of God." Whatever He tells you to do,
do it. There is now therefore no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus.
who walked not after the flesh, but after the spirit. Mary, Joseph's Lord's brethren,
everybody that was there. Servants knew and the disciples
got it. The disciples got it. And the
glory of Christ was manifested and they believed on him. Everybody
else was trying to fulfill the law, washing their hands. Now the water's gonna be turned
to wine. And wine is a picture in the
Bible of two things that I can tell, joy and comfort. A little wine makes Mary the
heart and Isaiah chapter 25 verse 6 speaks of that wine that is
on the lees that has been long refined and well refined and
that's the Spirit of God. That's a well-defined wine, well-refined
wine. In the Song of Solomon, chapter
1, the bride says to her husband, thy love is better than wine. And then in verse 1, chapter
5, it says, drink abundantly, oh my beloved. Drink abundantly
of this wine, it'll bring comfort and joy, peace to your heart. The best has been saved for last. The wine's also a picture of
the blood of Christ, isn't it? When we celebrate the Lord's
table, what do we do? We're remembering what the Lord
said when he said, this is the blood of the new covenant. and his blood was shed as a covering
for the sins of his people." So, the purpose of the water
of the Word is to point to the blood. Might God change the words
that are written on the pages of our Bible in our hearts to
wine? So that we see the effectual
blood of Christ. We look to that which God's looking
to. God said, when I see the blood, I'll pass by you. There's
the message here. This is the miracle. Draw it out. Now I can't speak with absolute
certainty, but this word draw I found is
only one other place in the Bible. And it's in John chapter 4 when
the Lord met with the woman at the well and he asked her for
a drink and she said to him, you have nothing to draw with?
And the Lord Jesus said to her, if you knew who it is that saith
unto thee, give me to drink, you would ask of him and he would
give you living water. He would give you living water.
That word draw is used twice in John chapter 4 and it's a
picture of drawing water up out of the well. Where did they get
the water that they filled up the water, the wash pans with?
They got it from the well. Did they dip the water that was
made wine out of those wash pans? I think maybe perhaps the servants
might even have some, how many hands have been through these
wash pots? What am I saying to you? Well,
I think they just went back to the well and got the water out of the
well. And the water that was turned to wine was drawn. The word baptizo or baptize is
the word to dip. And it's used often in the New
Testament. To draw means to bring up. The significance of that is that
the Lord Jesus himself is that deep inexhaustible source of
living water. Isaiah chapter 12 verse 3 says,
with joy shall you draw water out of the wells of salvation. With joy shall you draw water
out of the wells of salvation. Oh Lord. The servants knew where
it came from. I can't speak with absolute certainty.
Maybe it did come out of the wash pots, I don't know. Servants
knew. They knew exactly where it came
from. And we know where it comes from. It comes from Christ. So they were told to do three
things, fill up the water pots, draw out the wine, draw out the
water, bear it to the governor of the feast. Now to bear means
to carry a burden. There is a burden to the gospel.
There is a, I can tell you my experience and that is the burden
of standing up here and saying something that's not true. The burden of my own flesh, I
can't get out of my own way. I can't. There's so much flesh
in everything I do. I wish it wasn't so. There was
a time I thought maybe there'll come a day where I could get
up and just preach the power of the Spirit of God and have
nothing of me involved in it. I'm sorry. I hate that there's
so much of me involved in it. I wish it wasn't so, but I can't
get out of my own way, and it's a burden. This body of death
that I bear is a burden. It's a burden when we see people
not having an interest in the gospel. It's a burden to our
soul. What's the first thing we think
of when someone who's not a believer dies and leaves this world? Oh
my! Oh my! When there was life, there
was hope, but now all hope is lost. And we bear the burden
of wanting people to believe the gospel. Bear it to the governor of the
feast. He's the one, now all the people,
I don't know how many people were there at that wedding. Probably
quite a few. Nobody knew where the wine came
from, but the governor of the feast was the one that just,
everybody benefited from that new wine, but the governor of
the feast was the one that distributed it. You see, we can't distribute
the wine, can we? All we can do is taking it to
the governor of the feast. All we can do is take it to the
one who's able to make it effectual. The ruler of the feast, he's
called in verse 9. You know, I have to be reminded often,
we do what we do as unto the Lord and not as unto men. Because
if we bear the gospel for the approval of man, we'll quit. We'll quit. And when I have those
thoughts, I quit. I can't tell you how many times
I've resigned this job. Multiple times. And the Lord
has to remind me, who are you doing this for? Somebody will
say something, somebody will do something, somebody will be
unappreciative and uncommitted, and I think, what am I doing? I think I'll just give it up. Yeah, and if you're doing it
for man, you will. You will. You bear it to the
governor of the feast. And he distributes it as he will. The servants knew where it came
from. Why? Because they filled up the water
pots to the brim. They drew out the water and they took it to the governor
of the feast and they left it at that. They left that wedding feast
rejoicing. believing on the Lord Jesus Christ. Our Heavenly Father, thank you
for your word. Lord, make it effectual to our
hearts. Give us grace to rest in and
look to Christ alone for our salvation. For it's in his name
we pray, amen. 125, let's stand together, 125. I hear the Savior say, Thy strength
indeed is small, Child of weakness, watch and pray, Find in me thine
all in all. Jesus paid it all, all to Him
I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow. For now indeed I find Thy power
and Thine alone Can change the leper's spots And melt the heart
of stone Jesus paid it all All to Him I owe Sin that left a
crimson stain, He washed it white as snow. For nothing good have
I, Whereby thy grace to blame. I'll wash my garments white,
In the blood of Calvary's Lamb. Jesus paid it all, all to Him
I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain,
He washed it white as snow. And when before the throne I
stand in hymn complete, Jesus died my soul to save, my lips
shall still repeat, Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe. Sin had left a crimson stain
He washed it white as snow
