lover of my soul, 352. Jesus, lover of my soul, let
me to thy bosom fly. While the nearer waters roll,
while the tempest still is high, Hide me, O my Savior, hide, till
the storm of life is past. Safe into the haven guide, O
receive my soul at last. Other refuge have I none, hangs
my helpless soul on thee. Levi, leave me not alone, still
support and comfort me. All my trust on thee is stay,
All my help from thee I bring, Cover my defenseless head With
the shadow of thy wing. Thou, O Christ, art all I want,
More than all in Thee I find. Raise the fallen, cheer the faint,
Heal the sick and leave the blind. Just and holy is thy name, I
am all unrighteousness. False and full of sin I am, thou
art full of truth and grace. Plenteous grace with Thee is
found, Grace to cover all my sin. Let the healing streams
abound, Make and keep me pure within. Thou of life the fountain
art, freely let me take of Thee. Spring Thou up within my heart,
rise to all eternity. Amen. Chris and Vicki, it's your
turn. For our transgressions He bore
our sins In His body on the tree For our guilt He gave us peace
From our bondage And with His stripes, and with
His stripes, and with His stripes our souls are healed. He was numbered among transgressors. We did esteem him, forsaken by
his God. As our sacrifice, he died. that the law be satisfied. And all our sin, and all our
sin, and all our sin was laid We all had wandered far from
the fold of the shepherd of the sheep. But he sought us where we were. ? Humble mountains bleak and
bare ? ? And brought us home ? ? And brought us home ? ? And brought
us safely home to God ? Who can number his generation? Who shall declare all the triumphs
of his cross? Millions dead, now live again. There is follow in his train
Victorious Lord Victorious Lord Victorious Lord And coming King Thank you, Chris, Vicki. Soon after I met Todd in 96,
he introduced me to several other gospel preachers. One of the
first was Donnie Bell. And Donnie came here and preached
for us, I don't know, within a couple of years after we got
started. Been a dear friend of this church
and a a dear friend of mine, and thankful for your brother.
Shirley, I'm glad you came with him. We want to hear what the
Lord has to put on your heart, so please come, Donnie. Open your Bibles with me, if
you will, to Romans, Chapter 8. Romans, Chapter 8. Hard preached on the reality
of justification, I'm going to talk about a seven-fold justification. Seven aspects of justification.
Seven-fold justification. Justification, what a most blessed,
glorious subject. A wonderful, glorious truth,
Bible truth. To believe, and I say this much,
it's necessary to believe. If you're going to know God,
it's necessary for you to believe it. Two things have to be faced. First, the holiness and righteousness
of God. You've got to face that. And
the sinfulness of man. There's three absolutes in the
scripture. Man's an absolute sinner. Absolutely so. Christ is an absolute savior,
the only savior, absolute. And man's an absolute sinner.
Those three absolutes can't be denied. But justification, let
me give you its definition. It's a declaration from God himself
respecting man. God, the righteous judge of all
the earth, as the moral governor of the universe declares a man
righteous. He does it. Abraham believed
God. God said, you're righteous. Well,
how did he believe God? God made him righteous before
he could believe. Righteousness and faith go together. Can't
have one without the other. And it's the opposite of condemnation.
There's therefore now. And every time you read that,
it says now. Get up six o'clock in the morning,
it says now. Six o'clock tonight, it'll say
now. Forty years ago, when I started preaching 41 years ago, where
I'm at now, it was now. And it's still, now there is
no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus. It's in
the always present now. And what it is, it's God himself
not entering into judgment with the sinner. He said, Blessed
is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity. It's not
to make, but to declare a man righteous. And I want to give
you seven things about justification. And I pray that the Holy Spirit
would be pleased to come and meet with us. Now here in Romans
8, we see what justification is, where it comes from. Look what it said here in verse
30. Moreover, Romans 8, 30. Moreover, whom he did predestinate. Another thing in there is in
the past tense. Moreover, whom he did predestinate, them he
also called. And whom he called, listen to
this now, them he also justified. the calling, and whom he justified,
them also glorified." Ever been? That's in the past tense. Well,
what in the world are we going to say about these things? What
are we going to say? If God be for us, who can be
against us? And that's what I'm talking about. Look what he said. Oh, my. He that spared not his own son,
but delivered him up for us all. How shall he after He delivered
up His blessed Son, how shall He, not with Him freely, freely
give us all things? And listen to this, who shall
lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It's God that justifies. And we start with justification
where God does, with Himself. He said God justifies us. Justification
starts with God. And I tell you, I'm going to
tell you something else. I'm going to tell you it started when God declared
in the foundation of the world that He gave us grace in Christ
before the world ever began. All things the scripture said
in 2 Corinthians 5.18, all things are of God. Huh? I mean, not to say part of them,
but all things are of God. And when you talk about all things,
what do you think He's talking about? And I tell you, here's
the thing. It's a legal act of God. Now
let me tell you what I mean by that. He declares the sinner
righteous. But He has a reason and a basis
and a foundation to declare the sinner righteous. On the basis
of the sacrifice and doing and dying of our Lord Jesus Christ.
That's how He declares a man righteous. God made Christ. to be sin. And this person, this
blessed person, the Lord Jesus Christ, knew no sin. He is holy,
harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, higher than the
heavens. He dwelt with God in eternity.
And he was God when he came to earth. And he is God when he
went back to glory. But once he came here, he is
a man and God in one person. And bless his holy name, God
made him to be sin, who knew no sin. And then he turned around
and took that righteousness of Christ, that Christ himself,
who is all, never has been nothing but perfect holiness. He turned
around and gave us that freely, based on what Jesus Christ did. It's not an act of renewal. No,
no, when you do something wrong, he's got to do it over again.
It's not a process over a period of time. You don't labor till
you get justified. You know religion, religion labors
to end up in glory. Religion labors to be accepted
of God and to be justified when they get there. Where they want
to go, that's where we start. Now ain't that right? And let me give you three blessed
facts of justification. Justification removes the guilt
of sin. It takes it away. Doctors and
sociologists and psychiatrists making a fortune over the guilt
of man. And religion motivates people
by guilt. But justification removes the
guilt and the thing that makes us guilty is sin. And he removes
that sin so there can't be no guilt. Huh? And what he does, he takes a
sinner and gives him all the rights of a child of God, including
his eternal inheritance given him in Christ. Huh? And I'll tell you something else,
justification takes place outside the center. This takes place
between God and his blessed son. Huh? It can't depend on me because
it's done up yonder. Amen. It takes place, and I'll
tell you, here's the third thing, it takes place once and for all.
It isn't repeated. It's complete once and for all
time. Ain't that right? God, he said, God justifies us. Who shall lay anything to the
charge of God's elect? Where is the soul? Where is the
person? Where's the God? Where's the
angel? Where's the devil? Where's the demon? Where's the
person that would dare? Stand up and accuse one for whom
God himself said, I justify. And I sure ain't going to let
me condemn myself. And I ain't going to let you. And I'll tell you, here's the
second thing about it. So we started with God. Here's the
second thing about justification. It's by free grace. It's by free
grace. Look over here at Romans 3 24.
You know, I love the word free grace. I like sovereign grace.
I delight, and you know what it means, and I know what it
means. But free grace, I love the word free grace because you
don't have to explain what sovereign means. Well, you say, well, it's
free. Well, what's free mean? You tell me what free means.
It means free. And look what it says in Romans
3, 24. being justified freely. Well, how did it happen? By His
grace. Who's responsible for it? How
was it accomplished? Through the redemption, the payment
price, the doing and dying of the Lord Jesus Christ. Justification
is apart from works. It's apart from law. It's evident that no man is justified
by the law on the side of God. It means that you have no merit.
You know, a fella said one time, his mother said about him, said,
I know he's a good boy. He's been a Boy Scout all his
life and won all them badges. What's that got to do with anything?
But when he says freely, that means without any cause in us. It means without any payment
from us. And never, never under any circumstances
for any reason are we regarded righteous or justified before
God, but only through God's grace. Freely means freely. By his grace
means grace. If it's of works, then it's not
of grace. If it's of grace, then it's not
of works. You can't mix them. That fella say go shiny shoes? I remember years ago, these fellas
would preach on that premillennialism and They talked about, you know,
when they got in the 1,000-year reign, these gonna raise watermelons
big as Volkswagens. Gonna wear rattlesnakes for neckties.
You know what I told them one time? I said, well, if they got
them that big, said, I'm gonna start making knives. They're
just gonna take an awful big knife to cut them things. But I tell you what, when we
talk about being justified, we're talking about freely. Would there
be any cause for God to come down and say, boy, he done something
good. He's got some worth about him.
He's kept nine-tenths of my law. So we gonna justify it. being
justified freely. Freely. A lot of free. Free. People say, well, you're going
to get something free. People line up for that, except the
gospel. Remember when they used to give
commodities out? You know, a lot of you folks
don't know what commodities are, but they used to, the government
give out cheese and peanut butter and they'd have big trucks come
in and they'd give out commodities for four people. And because
it didn't cost them anything, they would line up to get a big
block of cheese and line up to get a big jar of peanut butter
or whatever it was. And now, they won't line up to
do anything. They got to bring it to their
house for them. But I tell you what, God, He
freely gives it to us. And then here's the second thing,
third thing. Look in Romans 5. We're justified by God, justified
freely, and justified by His blood. Oh, listen here now. Look there in verse 8. But God commendeth His love toward
us, in that while we were yet sinners, What happened? Christ died for us. Oh, Paul said, I'm gonna tell
you some more. He said, much more. Then, being
now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath by
him. And we talk about his blood,
sang those songs about the blood. When we talk about the blood
of Christ, we're talking about the death of Christ. When we
talk about blood, it's talking about death, the shedding of
blood, the shedding of blood. Without the shedding of blood,
there's no remission of sin. And our Lord Jesus Christ, and
one of my favorite words in all the Bible, and especially in
the gospel, is satisfaction. He, Christ, satisfied God in
every way. Whatever God required, Christ
gave it. God required holiness, Christ
was holy. God required sinlessness, Christ
was sinless. God required payment for sin,
Christ paid it. God required death for sin, Christ
died. God required Wrath to be poured
out upon the sinner? Christ bore our wrath. So everything
that was against us, Christ Himself satisfied God. Scott Richardson
said one time, and I'll never forget it, the first time I ever
heard this statement. He said this, the only thing
that'll quiet a screaming conscience is a perfect sacrifice. And if
you ever have a perfect sacrifice, your conscience will never ask
for anything else again. And Christ is that perfect sacrifice,
that satisfaction to God himself. that God himself looks at him
and says, I cannot ask for anything else. Whoo! Bless his name. Satisfaction. Satisfaction. God's satisfied. God took His blessed Son and
said, I'm satisfied. And when He embraced His Son,
He embraced me. He embraced you. And that's what Paul was talking
about. When he looks at you, he sees Christ. And oh, I'll tell you something.
Our Lord Jesus Christ, under the law and under the sacrifices,
the fire gunned down and consumed the sacrifice. When God's wrath
and judgment fell upon Christ, Christ consumed the wrath of
God. Christ consumed the judgment
of God. And if He consumed it all for
whom He died, then there ain't nothing for us. And it's the blood It's the blood
that makes atonement for sin. And our Lord Jesus Christ by
His own blood entered once. Where did He go? Into that holy
place. I'm going to tell you what I think about that. Now
whether you know it, you can take it or leave it. I'll quit
preaching and tell you what I think. When it says that He entered
once into that holy place with His own blood and put it and
obtained eternal redemption for us, I believe in that three hours
of darkness on the cross, this is what I believe now, that our
Lord Jesus Christ, by the Spirit, went into God's presence with
his own blood, and there's an altar in heaven, And he went
in there and he put his own blood on that altar before God, like
that mercy seat was behind the veil. He took his own blood in
there and put it before God. And when he came out, he came
out with the redemption and the payment price of all of God's
elect from Abel to the end of time. That's how powerful and
precious the blood of Christ is. And oh my. And you know what it says then?
He hath perfected forever. Oh my. And you know what they
sang in heaven? Not unto her. Oh Lord, thou art
worthy. Thou art worthy to take the book
and open the seals thereof. For thou was slain. and hast
redeemed us, they sung a new song, and hast redeemed us under
God by thy blood out of every tribe, every kindred, and every
nation under heaven. Whoo, boy, that's a lot of people.
They say, y'all believe only a handful of saviors. You're
exactly right, I do, but it's God's hand. Ain't that right? All right,
let me give you another one. The fourth one is by the resurrection
as proof, proof that everything else has been done. You know,
when God raised the Lord, He has delivered for our offenses,
raised for our justification. When God raised Him from the
dead, it was proof of who He said He was, that He was the
God-man, that He came here to do a work, and He finished that
work. And it's proof that God accepted His work. Whoever, did
God ever say anybody to anybody ever said, come up here and sit
at my right hand until I make thy enemies thy footstool? Huh? Did he ever say that to anybody?
But he said that to his son, why? Because he's resurrected. I want you everybody to know
that this is my blessed son and he sat down at my right hand.
God accepted his person. God accepted his sacrifice, God
accepted his death, God accepted everything our Lord Jesus did.
And I'll tell you this much, it's proof that the work is finished,
that sin is put away once and for all, and that his obedience
is ours. You know what God said in Hebrews
10, 17? Because of what Christ did. He
said, their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Todd said, why he can't remember
them because he ain't got any. Can't remember something you
don't have, and that's why God put them all away. You see, the
law is proof of my condemnation, my guilt. My union with Adam
is proof of my sin and my sin nature. But I tell you what,
the proof of my justification is Christ alone. Before the law,
Christ is my justification. Before sin, Christ is my justification. Before God, Christ is my justification. Before my own conscience, Christ
is our justification. Everything that could accuse
me, Christ is that for me. Ain't that right? Is he that
way for you? I'm telling you, beloved. Who's going to lay anything in
charge of God's elect? It's God that justified them.
God did. And you know people say, how
in the world do you know you're justified? How do you know that
you don't have any sin? And the only thing I can talk
about walking by faith, the only thing I can say is, there sits
my justification in God's right hand. What else are you going
to say? When people look at me, they
can't see no justification in me. They can't see I'm sinless. They can't see I'm righteous.
They can't tell that I have no sin. I can't tell you've got
none. Except Christ. That's why we
always say, there he is. Where's your acceptance? There
he is. Where's your righteousness? There he is. It's in God's right
hand. And I tell you, here's the fifth
point. Faith is the means of our justification. You know, Romans 5-1 says, Therefore,
being justified by faith, we have peace with God. You know, I'm going to say a
few things about faith. Faith, what it does, it receives
the truth of the gospel. I've said a lot of things. And
if you have faith, you believe every one of those things that
I said. What you did is you believed
the truth. You received the truth as you heard it. Faith didn't
make you receive it. And you know, faith receives
the truth of the gospel and the merits of Christ. It receives
the doing and the dying of the Lord Jesus Christ. In Romans
3.28, I think it is. No, look here, down here. Yeah,
first Romans 3.28. Therefore, we come to this conclusion. Come to this conclusion because
they said, well, we're in the world, can we boast about then
if righteousness and justification is done by God without any law,
without any works, what are we going to do then? We conclude
that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
And what faith is, now let me tell you something. Faith looks
to Christ and the doing and dying of Christ. It believes that.
Faith is not its own object. You find people all the time
talking about my faith, my faith, my faith. But faith is not its own object.
Christ is faith's object. You see, our whole salvation
is subjective. It's outside ourselves. Everything
that was done for us was done outside ourselves. Is that not
right? You know, Christ died 2,000 years
ago. 2,000 years ago or something like that.
And here's what happened. I wasn't there. But when Christ
died, everything that God wanted and required from me was already
done. Somebody preached the gospel to me and told me what was already
done. And when that heard what was
already done and already complete and already accomplished, I says,
my word. That's the best news I ever heard.
Tell me that again. I will. Tell me it next. Ruby Elmore used to say every
Sunday morning, she'd say, you can preach that again tonight.
But that's what we're talking about. Everything done for us
is completely outside ourselves. And I'll tell you something,
faith is also based on knowledge. You cannot be saved without knowing
something about Christ. How shall they call on Him in
whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in
Him of whom they have not heard? And how are they going to believe
without somebody telling them about it? Huh? Oh my. And it's based, you know, faith
is based on what God says. I know whom I have believed.
And we believe with the heart. Now listen, we don't trust our
faith. He put an excellent article in his bulletin last week. We
don't trust our faith. We trust the Lord Jesus Christ.
We don't trust our feelings. I have some of the most wonderful
feelings and I have some of the most awful feelings. Which one
am I going to look to? We trust our master, the Lord
Jesus Christ. We don't trust our intellect. It's not big enough. We trust
His infinite knowledge of us. I don't trust my love for Christ.
I trust His love for me. I don't trust what I know about
Him. I trust what He knows about me. And one of the most blessed
comfort in things of the gospel is that God knows us as we really
are and still accepts us and saves us. Right this moment, yesterday,
and forever. Now that's comforting to me. Well, well, well. Oh, you've
got to see this now. You got to see this. Look over
here in Matthew chapter 12 with me. This is the sixth one. I hope I'm not going too fast. You know, this is what's so wonderful
about the gospel. I heard Chris preach last night,
and I'm like, Todd, I just, oh my. Just that one thing that
he said about faith, thy faith has saved thee. And he said, you know, he said,
well, faith save you, it's according to who you got it from. That
just, what a blessing. It's according to where you got
it from. If you get it from the preacher, get shit of it. Get
it from the church, you don't need it. But if you get it from
God, you get it from Christ, and he brings it to you, and
he puts it in your heart. You're going to live by faith
and you're going to die in faith, huh? But oh my, but look here
at these words. I want you to look here in verse
Matthew 1234 with me. Our Lord Jesus talking here now
and he said, oh generation of vipers, how can you being evil
speak good things? For out of the abundance of the
heart, the mouth speaketh. A good man, out of the good treasure
of his heart, he bringeth forth good things. And an evil man,
out of the evil treasure of his heart, bringeth forth evil things.
But now listen to this now. We're justified by our words
or condemned by our words. But I say unto you that every
idle word that men shall speak, they shall give an account thereof
in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be
justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned. Now what
do you think he's talking about? I know he's not talking about
us talking about basketball or the weather. He's not talking
about that. He's not talking about us sitting
around shooting the breeze, whatever you want to call it. He's talking
about what we say about God, what we say about Christ, what
we say about ourselves, what we say about sin. When you said
that fella's gonna shine his shoes, that's what an odd word. What an evil word come out of
a man's mouth. He condemned himself by his own
words. And that's what we say about
our Lord Jesus Christ. But our words justify us. We're
justified by what we say. And I'll tell you, you know,
by the words, what we say about God. If you say God wants to
let go and let God, what does it mean, first of all, to let
go? What does it mean, secondly, to let God? When what you say about the love
of God, that God loves everybody and Christ died for everybody,
that's idle words. But when you say Christ loved
His elect, Christ died for His elect, God justified His elect,
it's what we say about God. It's what we say about ourselves.
What do you say about yourself? If you've got something good
to say about yourselves, that's an idol. That's an idol. That's an idol. I tell you what,
I used to say this all the time years ago when I first started
preaching the gospel. I said, if you all ever find
out what I'm like, I said, you'll never ever have me in your house,
never ask me at your table to eat if you ever find out what
I'm like. I'm thankful. And here's another
thing. I know everybody in this building
and I know everything there is to know about you. And you know me. We know something about ourselves.
Let me use this little illustration. If I had a pen and a piece of
paper, I'd write it. But I give you three zeros. What's that worth? Give you three
more zeros. What's that worth? I'll give you three, three more
zeros, that's nine. You still got just nothing but
a bunch of zeros. But you put Christ, you put one
before that number. You got something worth something.
And Christ is the only thing that makes us worth anything.
We're nothings and nobodies without Him. And we ourselves look at
ourselves and say, how could it possibly be that Thou, my
God, shouldst die for me? And I tell you what, we can't
talk of our righteousness and Christ's righteousness at the
same time. We can't speak about our works and His works in the
same breath. We can't talk about our strength
in light of His omnipotence. And we can't talk about his sovereignty
and he whirls and reigns and everything over this world and
yet go around griping all the time and complaining. Can't do that. That's what I'm
talking about. And then my last point is this, and this is a little tough one
for me. We're justified by works as the fruits. And what do I
mean by that? You know, God knew Abraham was
a righteous man. God justified Abraham. God justified
Rahab. God justified Lot. But here's
the thing about it. Where Abraham lived and what
he did in his day, how's anybody going to know where he has faith?
Well, first of all, he went out not knowing where he was going.
They said, where's that old man going? Where you going, Abraham? I don't know. God told me to
go, so I'm going. And then when he took his son
up on that mountain, God knew what he was going to do. God
sent him to do it. But you know what happened? Nobody else knew
how much faith Abraham had until they see him took Isaac up that
mountain. And the first thing he said, I'm going to go up there
and I'm going to worship, and he ended up coming back. Coming
back. Faith, justice before God justifies
us before God. And anything we say or do will
justify our faith before men. And the long and short of it
is this. The long and short of it is this. Where there's grace
in the heart, there'll be grace in the life. Where there's faith
in the heart, there gonna be fruit in the life. And I don't
know about you, but I care what people think of me. I do. I care what they think about
me as a preacher, as a person, As a husband, as a father, as
a neighbor. I care what people, as a grandfather,
I care what people think about me. I do. And you know, people's going
to judge my master by me. If I go out here mean, harsh,
and cruel, and mouthing people, and saying ugly things about
people, and doing ugly things to people, then they're going
to say, boy, he calls himself a Christian. But what I'm saying
is I care what people think about me. I care what people think
about my master. And I care how I treat people.
Do you care how you treat people? Huh? I care how I treat people. Well, that's seven aspects of
justification. Anybody want to make you happy? Bless your heart. It didn't mind
if it didn't anybody else's. That's what I started to say.
The gospel does something for me as much as it does anybody
else, especially when I'm preaching it. I love it. I love it. I'm gonna tell you this and I'm
gonna sit down, honestly. I told Greg on the way to the
meeting this morning, there's an old fella who used to be in
our church, the Lord took him home, Floyd Boring. A lot of
you probably knew Floyd. We was in a meeting one time
and Floyd said, he got up and he had something to say and he
said, you know, there's only two kind of preachers make me
want to preach. He said, them that can and them that can't. fellow got upset. I know one
fellow I'm going to make happy today. But you know what the gospel
does? It does something for the Lord's people that nothing else
in this world does. That's why you come from miles
and miles away, come from other states to great expense and great
labor to come here to hear this blessed gospel and these blessed
men that preach it. How Chris, you've got such beautiful
feet. Look at them beautiful feet.
