Jesus drank the cup of wrath for me by Charles Spurgeon. John chapter 18, verse 11. Shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me? The cup represented the full fury of divine justice. Jesus did not merely taste the cup of divine wrath. He drained it dry.

Not a drop was left for any of his people. Therefore, for those savingly united to Him, no wrath remains. Our words fail and our conceptions faint at the thought of the Great Substitute with all the sins of His people condensed into one horrifying cup and set before Him. How shall we think of Him as putting that cup to His lips and drinking, drinking, drinking all the wrath until he had drained the cup to the bottom and filled himself with horror? Yet see, he has finished the death drink and turned the cup upside down, crying, It is finished! At one tremendous draft, the loving Lord has drained damnation dry for all of His people, and there is no dreg nor drop left for any one of them. Their sins have, in fact, been paid for, blotted out, and annihilated by the Redeemer's sin-atoning sacrifice. Did Jesus drink the cup of damnation dry? Then there is not a drop left for me.

Every drop of divine wrath was put into that cup, and Jesus drank it all. The wrath that was due to us was poured upon Him. He suffered the whole of wrath that was due to His people. The sword of divine justice was sheathed in His loving heart. Not a pang of punishment can fall upon a man for whom Jesus has died. He drained the cup of wrath and turned it into a cup of salvation for us. He bore the whole of divine vengeance. The full fury of divine justice was expended upon Him. not a drop of wrath remains for the believer. There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
