The article "The Arminian in the TULIP Sweatshirt" by Brandan Kraft addresses the theological tension between Calvinism and Arminianism, particularly critiquing those within the Reformed community who may, under the guise of orthodox belief, embody Arminian principles. Kraft argues that individuals who pride themselves on doctrinal precision and gatekeeping often rely on human intellectual acts for salvation rather than acknowledging God's sovereign election as foundational. He substantiates his claims with Scripture, notably Acts 13:48 and Romans 8:16, emphasizing that true faith and assurance stem from a heart transformed by the Spirit rather than mere intellectual assent or doctrinal correctness. The practical significance of this message lies in the call for self-examination and repentance, urging believers to center their faith on Christ’s work rather than their own theological achievements.

Key Quotes

“Wearing the sweatshirt does not make a man Reformed; it only makes him a freewiller in a costume the Reformed have lent him.”

“The sharpest doctrine produces the widest arms.”

“Real saving faith is the whole-soul response of the Spirit-authored new heart to the proclaimed Gospel.”

“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.”

  • D. Move Four: Assurance from Theological Accuracy
  • Assurance stems from correct articulation rather than the work of Christ.
  • Real assurance should arise from the Spirit's witness.
  • Key Insight: Evaluating one's salvation based on doctrinal defense is an erroneous approach.
III. The Disguise of the Freewiller

  • Identifying those in outer appearances without understanding the underlying theology.
  • Crypto-Arminians often evade scrutiny in a Reformed context due to their 'costume.'
  • B. The Role of Inspections in Faith Communities
  • Perils of self-appointed inspectors who fail to examine their own hearts.

The Arminian in the TULIP Sweatshirt

Those of you who knew me in the early years of my sovereign grace walk can remember when I used to wear the TULIP sweatshirt loud. I wore it like a badge of office. I patted myself on the back for getting the five points right. I made my whole identity out of being the man in the room who could be trusted to defend Calvinism against any freewiller in earshot.

And the pride monster ate well in those years. The pride monster always eats well in the man who has made his sweatshirt his savior.

I want to write about something I have come to see over my years inside these sovereign grace circles, and over my years inside my own heart. The hardest-line gospel defender in your network, the man who polices every brother's articulation, the man who calls everybody else a compromiser, the heresy hunter who walks through the foyer with TULIP on his chest, is, more often than not, a freewiller in a costume.

Wearing the sweatshirt does not make a man Reformed. It only makes him a freewiller in a costume the Reformed have lent him.

I want to walk you through how to see the engine running underneath the sweatshirt. There are four moves the crypto-Arminian makes. None of them sound Arminian on the surface. All of them are Arminian underneath.

Move One. He Makes Precision the Test of Salvation.

The freewiller stands at the front of the room and says decide rightly and you are saved.

The crypto-Calvinist stands at the front of the room and says believe rightly and you are saved. And by believe he means recite-the-formula. He means quote-TULIP-correctly. He means use the approved language for imputation.

These are the same sentence in different clothing.

The qualifier in both cases is the human's intellectual act. The freewiller asks you to perform a decision. The crypto-Calvinist asks you to perform an articulation. In both cases you are saved by what you do with your mind.

And in both cases the cross has been moved to the side of the room. Christ does not save the man who gets the doctrine right. Christ saves the man God elected from before the foundation of the world. And as many as were ordained to eternal life believed (Acts 13:48). The ordination came first. The believing followed. The believing did not cause the ordination.

The crypto-Arminian has the order reversed, and that reversal is the freewiller engine running underneath his Calvinist coat.

Move Two. He Locates Faith in Bare Intellectual Assent.

This is Sandemanian faith. Cold propositional agreement. The believer is the man who understands the facts of the gospel and signs off on them mentally.

The freewiller's altar call asks for a decision. The crypto-Calvinist's sermon asks for an understanding. Both ask the human to perform the qualifying act with his mind.

Real saving faith is not bare assent. Real saving faith is the whole-soul response of the Spirit-authored new heart to the proclaimed Gospel.   It hears the propositions, says amen to them, and cleaves to the Christ behind them all, all in one act because the new heart is one.  Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). He authors it. He finishes it. We do not assent our way into it.

But the crypto-Arminian cannot speak of the felt witness without setting off his own alarms. He has been trained to hear any interior language as semi-Pelagian. So he flattens faith down to the propositional, until faith is an exercise you do with your brain alone, until it's about passing the theology test,  and the rest of the soul gets cut out of the gospel.

That is freewillism with the soul amputated.

Move Three. He Gatekeeps Over Articulation.

The Spirit knows His own and teaches them.

The crypto-Arminian has taken that job for himself.

He sits at the door of the household of faith and grades transcripts. If your sentence on imputation is imprecise, he sends you home unjustified. If your phrasing on the new birth uses a word he does not like, he writes you off as a compromiser. He has functionally elected himself the arbiter of election.

And it is hard to see this for what it is, because he speaks the language of sovereign grace while doing it. He says the Spirit saves whom He saves. And then in the same breath he tells you the Spirit has not saved your brother because your brother used the wrong word in a sermon.

Man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7).

The crypto-Arminian only knows how to look on the outward appearance. He has lost the eyes to read what the Lord reads. He grades the transcript and calls it discernment. Christ would call it Pharisee work.

Move Four. He Manufactures Assurance From Theological Accuracy.

Real assurance flows from Christ's finished work and the Spirit's witness with our spirit.

The crypto-Arminian's assurance flows from his own ability to articulate the gospel correctly.

He is sure he is saved because he can defend the five points at a wedding reception. He is sure he is saved because he can recite the Belgic Confession in the bathtub. He is sure he is saved because he can spot a freewiller from across the parking lot. The ground of his confidence is my doctrine, and the cross has slipped from being the assurance to being the trophy.

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God (Romans 8:16).

The Spirit bears witness. Not my catechism score. Not my ability to argue down a Methodist. Not my willingness to label every imprecise brother a compromiser.

And if your assurance comes from how well you can defend the doctrine, then your assurance is the same kind the freewiller has, assurance grounded in the human's own act. The sweatshirt has not saved you from that. It has only changed the costume.

Why the Disguise Holds Up

The disguise holds because the household has trained itself to check the outerwear and not the engine.

A freewiller showing up in an altar-call jacket would be spotted in one sermon. A freewiller showing up in TULIP fabric gets to preach for forty years.

The heresy hunters are particularly susceptible to wearing this costume, because they have already decided they are the ones doing the inspecting. The inspector rarely inspects himself. He is too busy running the score-cards on everybody else.

And so the freewiller engine keeps purring underneath the sovereign grace clothes, year after year, sermon after sermon, gatekeeping action after gatekeeping action. And nobody notices because the costume is regulation issue and the man has been wearing it longer than most of the rest of us have been alive.

What Real Sovereign Grace Actually Sounds Like

Real sovereign grace gives the Spirit His job back.

Real sovereign grace produces a man who reads an imprecise sentence from a brother and says let me hear what the heart is saying before I grade the words.

Real sovereign grace produces wide arms, because the man who knows he was saved by sheer grace knows his own words are not clean enough either, and only the righteousness of Christ makes any of us legible to God in the first place.

The sharpest doctrine produces the widest arms.

The crypto-Arminian inverts this. He thinks the sharpest doctrine produces the narrowest tribe. He has the engine wrong. The engine of sovereign grace expands the household. It does not police it. The engine of freewillism is the one that polices. The crypto-Arminian has the freewiller engine running underneath the sovereign grace nameplate, and the policing is the giveaway.

Repentance

I have run this play. I have worn the sweatshirt loud. I have called brethren compromisers from a sweatshirt that turned out to be hiding a freewiller engine of my own. I have stood in the foyer and graded the sermon I had just heard against the doctrinal precision I thought I had mastered. I have been the inspector who never inspected himself.

I repent of all of it. In sackcloth and ashes. Like Nineveh. The Lord has been patient with me beyond what any honest man would have been patient. And He has shown me, slowly, that the engine I was running underneath my own sweatshirt was the very engine I had spent years calling out in other people.

If I can be that man and be forgiven, every man wearing a TULIP sweatshirt right now can drop the engine and pick up the Person.

Christ is the Savior. The sweatshirt is not.

A Word to the Reader

If you are sitting in a room week after week being told that your imprecise sentence has cost you the gospel, you are not in a sovereign grace church. You are in a freewiller church with a TULIP banner over the door. The engine the men in that pulpit are running is the same engine the Methodist down the road is running. They have just put a better costume on it.

And the cure is not to leave sovereign grace. The cure is to find the men who are running the actual engine. Men whose sharpest doctrine produces the widest arms. Men whose precision feeds you instead of grading you. Men who can read your imprecise sentence and hear the heart underneath it, because they know the Lord reads hearts and not transcripts.

The household of faith is wider than the heresy hunters can see. Christ is still doing His own work. The Spirit is still bearing His own witness. The cross is still sufficient for every brother whose sentences trip over themselves on the way to Glory.

And the freewiller in the TULIP sweatshirt will not have the last word. The Lord will. To Him Be the Glory Forever and Ever!!!

Grace and Peace,
Brandan

"he can recite the Belgic Confession in the bathtub" is such a random thought! Ha! Not to say it doesn't exist, but I can say from personal experience that I have never encountered this sort of behavior in the Gospel Standard Congregations. To be fair, I only listen online as I do not live close enough to attend in person, but these issues seem to be most prevalent amongst the Sovereign Grace Tribe in tne USA.
