115. Psalm 115. Trish has been in touch with
a couple of the ladies in Texas and the report is that everyone's
well. Lots of water and some damage,
but everybody's safe. So I'm thankful for that. Alex, good to have you here with
us tonight. All right, you all have your Bibles open to Psalm
115. Not unto us, O Lord, not unto
us, but unto thy name, give glory for thy mercy and for thy truth's
sake. There's no mercy without truth.
Oh, but how much mercy there is. He delights in showing mercy,
there's an abundance of mercy, putting away our sins through
the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus Christ. Wherefore, wherefore
should the heathen say, where is now their God? Our God is
in the heavens and he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. Notice, the past tense verbs
he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased. Everything that happens
in time has already happened in eternity. Lord's already purposed
it, he's ordained it, it's finished. The works the scripture says
were finished from the foundations of the world. Their idols Man by nature is
an idolater. He fashions in his imagination
a false god. Their idols are silver and gold,
the work of men's hands. He's not talking about just bowing
down to a little figure. He's talking about all those
things that men do in order to earn favor with God, the works
of man's hands. man's free will, man's good works. They have mouths. Their idols
have mouths, but they speak not. Eyes have they, but they see
not. They have ears, but they hear not. Noses have they, but
they smell not. They have hands, but they handle
not. Feet have they, but they walk not. Neither speak they
through their throat. In other words, they're dead.
They're just a figment of men's imagination. That's all they
are. There's no truth to them. There's no life in them. And verse eight, they that make
them are like unto them. So is everyone that trusteth
in them. They that make them have no truth and they that make
them have no life. Man sets himself up on the throne
of God. Now look at verse nine. Oh, Israel. Oh, Israel, the Prince of God. the called of God, the chosen
of God, trust thou in the Lord. For he is their help and their
shield. He that fear the Lord, ye that
fear the Lord, trust in the Lord. He is their help and their shield. The Lord have been mindful of
us. He will bless us. He will bless the house of Israel. He will bless the house of Aaron. Let's pray. Our merciful heavenly father,
come before thy throne of grace, thanking you that we have acceptance
in the Lord Jesus Christ, that we have a righteousness in him.
through his perfect obedience, fulfillment of the law. We have
justification in him through the sacrifice that he made on
Calvary's cross, putting away all the sins of all thy people.
Lord, you've promised to bless Israel. Know how we need your
blessing tonight. We need for you to speak to our
hearts. We need for you to reveal the glory of Christ to us and
to cause us Lord to find our hope. All of our salvation. And all of our comfort and rest.
In him. We thank you for your hand of
protection on our brethren in Texas and we pray that you will
continue to provide for them in this time of need. We ask
it in Christ name. Amen. Number 334 from the hardback
timbrel, number 334. Let's all stand together again.
? Be thou my vision, O Lord of
my heart ? ? Naught be all else to me, save that thou art ? ?
Thou my best thought, by day or by night ? ? Waking or sleeping,
thy presence my light ? Be Thou my wisdom, and Thou my true word,
I ever with Thee, and Thou with me, Lord. Thou my great Father,
I Thy true son, Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one. Riches I heed not, nor man's
empty praise. Thou mine inheritance, now and
always. Thou and Thou only, first in
my heart. Thy King of Heaven, my treasure
Thou art. I king of heaven, my victory
won. May I reach heaven's joys, O
bright heaven's sun. Heart of my own heart, ? Whatever
befall ? Still be my vision ? O ruler of all Please be seated. Will you open your Bibles with
me to 2 Thessalonians 2. 2 Thessalonians 2. And we're
going to begin with verse 15 and then
look at some other passages of scripture where the Lord speaks
of holding fast, holding fast. Now the title of this message
is what traditions do we hold? What traditions do we hold? Now traditions can be a good
thing. The word tradition in the English
as well as in the original Greek translated means that which is
handed down, that which is handed down. That's what tradition means.
And you have traditions in your family, things that have been
handed down from generation to generation. We have traditions
in a nation, things that have been handed down from generation
to generation And those traditions provide, they provide unity. They provide a sense of security. We have a sense of nostalgia
in those traditions. And that's a good thing. That's
a good thing that we have traditions. The problem is when men develop
traditions spiritually speaking, that are contrary to the things
that God has handed down. Now, look with me at verse 15. Therefore, brethren, stand fast
and hold the traditions which you have been taught, whether
by word or by our epistle. Whether we've taught you these
things when we were there with you, or whether we taught you
these things in the epistles or letters that we wrote to you,
hold fast to those things that we have passed down to you because
they came from God. They came from God. Now, turn
with me to Matthew chapter 15. Matthew chapter 15. When man's traditions overrule
God's traditions, then those traditions are not good. They're not good. Matthew chapter
15. We'll begin reading at verse
1. Then came to Jesus scribes and
Pharisees which were of Jerusalem saying, Why do thy disciples
transgress the traditions of the elders? For they wash not
their hands when they eat bread." Now, that was a tradition that
had been handed down. It's a good thing to wash your
hands before you eat. But the washing that the Lord
had ordained in the Old Covenant had become a tradition without
any meaning. And so they had lost the significance
of what those washings pointed to and they were practicing the
traditions. And the Lord said in verse 3,
unto them, why do you also transgress the commandment of God by your
tradition? You have a tradition, and you've
passed down these traditions from generation to generation
but your traditions transgress the commandments of God the things
that have been passed down from God for God commanded verse 4
saying honor thy father and thy mother and he that curseth father
or mother let him die the death that was in the law that was
God's commandment honor your father and your mother but you
say Whosoever shall say to his father or mother, it is a gift
by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me. Now they had
a tradition and their tradition was that they declared all their
possessions committed to God. So when the mother and father
came and asked them for some help, they could say, we don't
have anything to give you. he said what about all that you
possess all know that's not ours it's god's we've given it to
god we've dedicated all our possessions to god we're gonna use them for
ourselves but we've dedicated them to god and so they're not
free word we're not free to give them to you because they don't
want us for six and honor not his father
and his mother He shall be free. Thus have you made the commandment
of God of none effect by your tradition. You've developed a
tradition, you've passed it down from generation to generation,
and your tradition violate the traditions of God. You hypocrites. Well did Isaiah the prophet say
of you, this people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and
they honor me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
But in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments
of men." You are telling men that the traditions that you've
developed are the traditions that God's given us. But your
traditions are contrary to those things that God has told us to
do. Nothing's changed. Nothing's
changed. Men still have traditions. They
have the tradition of free will. They believe that they have the
power to determine the outcome of their own salvation by a decision
that they make. They believe that Christ came
into the world to make an offer of salvation to anyone that will
make what he did work for them by a decision that they make.
Now, that's idolatry. That's putting man on the throne
of God. That's a false god. But it's
a tradition. It's well-held tradition in every
religion. Free will is the most believed
lie in the world. Why is it believed? Because it's,
well, it's tradition. It's tradition. You remember
Fiddler on the Roof, the daughter that wanted to marry a Gentile
and her father stood against it and she came to her father
and she's, and in tears, Papa, Papa, why can't I marry this
Gentile? And he said, I'll tell you why.
I've got a good reason. Tradition. Tradition, that was
the only reason, wasn't it? Men teach traditions of men as
the commandments of God. Religion is full of traditions. or if you'll do this, or if you'll
do that, or if you'll abstain from this or abstain from that,
if you'll dress this way or talk like this or walk like that,
God will have favor on you. Just traditions. Every form of
religion's got its own set of rules and regulations. Traditions
passed down by men. And men are deceived in thinking,
well, if we keep these traditions, If we keep these traditions,
we're pleasing God. So men have traditions when it
comes to man's will. They have traditions when it
comes to man's works. They have tradition when it comes
to the word of God. It's amazing to me that those
people who espouse sola scriptura, only the Scriptures. We believe
that all Scripture has been given by inspiration of God and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness, that the man of God might be
thoroughly furnished unto all good works. We believe that no
Scripture was given by private interpretation, but it was God-breathed
as holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Spirit. and we interpret scripture by
scripture. That's the foundational rule of interpretation. You always interpret scripture
by scripture and you always interpret the obscure by that which is
clear. That's just and yet those who
would agree with everything I just said have written out their creeds
and their confessions and anytime there's a discrepancy among them,
what do they do? They don't go to the scriptures.
They don't go to the scriptures. Why? Because they've got a tradition.
Well, that creed was written in 1689. That creed goes back
to the 15th century. That's our confession of faith.
And anytime there's a discrepancy between the Word of God and their
doctrine, They go back to their tradition, to their creed, to
their confession in order to prove their position. Men love
tradition. Tradition in certain places is
a good thing. You've got traditions in your
family. We've got traditions in the nation. Those are all
good things. But oh, God protect us from making
the commandments of men the traditions of God. Now when Paul said, when
he said, hold fast, stand fast, don't move, don't move, that's
what, that's all that word means, stand fast, just stand right
there, don't take a step forward, don't take a step backwards,
don't look to the right, stand fast in the traditions that I
have handed down to you, whether by word or by epistle.
What are those traditions? What are those things that we're
to stand fast on? Well, let me say, first of all,
Romans chapter 14, verse four, who art thou that judges another
man's servant? To his master, he stands or falls. Yea, he shall be holding up by
God who is able to make him stand. So, if we're going to stand fast
in the traditions that God's given us, we're going to need
the Lord to enable us to do that. And we're not going to be concerned
about what other men say. We're judged by our master. He's
the one who planted our feet right there and we're not going
to move. All right, what are these traditions?
What does God have to say in His Word about standing fast
and about where we ought to stand? Well, I want to stand where He
stands, don't you? I just want to stand where God's standing.
I don't want to be standing someplace where God's not standing. So
let's take our Bibles and turn with me to Psalm 89 because the
Lord has spoken very clearly about where it is that He's standing. Stand fast now. in the traditions
that I've given you. And don't exchange my traditions
for man's traditions. The world does it, and every
religion is full of man-made commandments and man-made traditions.
But here's our question. What sayeth the scriptures? What
does God say? That's where I want to stand.
I want to just stand fast, right where God says he's standing
fast. So you have your Bibles open to Psalm 89. Look at verse 28. My mercy will
I keep for him forevermore. He's talking about Christ. And
my covenant shall stand fast with him. Now, God says, My covenant is
going to stand fast. It's not going to move. My promises
are yea and amen in Him. That's what the word covenant
means, the promise. He's talking about the covenant of grace.
He's talking about that covenant that was established in everlasting
and will last to everlasting. He's not talking about, you know,
religion The traditions of religion are all based on the promises
that we make to God, aren't they? That's what the traditions of
religion are. You make a commitment, you make a promise, and God will
reward you for your promises. Now, you've got to rededicate
yourself and renew those promises often because, you know, if you
want God's favor, and God says, my covenant, The covenant that
I have made with Him, what is that covenant? God the Father
promised before time ever began, before Adam was ever created,
before the world was put into existence, God the Father in
the covenant of grace in eternity past promised to give to His
Son a bride. And so He elected a particular
people. chose them in Christ before the
foundation of the world. The Lord Jesus Christ entered
into this covenant promise with His Father and agreed to be their
surety. He agreed to be everything that
they needed in order for them to have fellowship with the Holy
God. He agreed to fulfill all the demands of God's holy law
for them. He agreed to suffer the full
wrath of God's justice for their sins in order to put away their
sins once and for all. He agreed to redeem them. God the Holy Spirit, now this
is before the angels were created. This is before the world came
into creation. This is before the stars and all that we see
in the heavens was ever there. God the Holy Spirit, the eternal
God agreed with the Father. and with the Son to make those
whom God had chosen, make those whom Christ agreed to redeem
willing. He agreed to regenerate them. He agreed to make them willing
in the day of His power. He agreed to come like the wind
and blow in their hearts to take out their heart of stone and
put in a heart of flesh. He agreed to give them faith
and cause them to believe. Now that's a promise that the
Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit made to each other without
any regard whatsoever to any promise or any decision or any
commitment or any work or any knowledge that you and I would
ever make or would ever have. Now those promises are sure and
steadfast that's what David was talking about David's last words
when he says when he said although my house be not so with God the
tabernacle of this flesh my home my family my kids they're not
like they ought to be yet yet he has made with me an everlasting
covenant ordered in all things and sure sure this is all my
salvation this is all my desire though he make it not to grow
when I look at now that that statement though he make it not
to grow I was a looking at the transcript
from my seminary education back in the early 80s. And I took three courses in seminary
on church growth. How to grow a church. You know the church of the Lord
Jesus Christ is exactly the same size today as it was before Adam
was created? The church of the Lord Jesus
Christ is exactly the same size today as it will be in eternity
future? Church doesn't grow. It's set. It's exact number of people that
God has chosen. And David, I think, also was
saying, though we make it not to grow, I look at my life, I
don't see any growth. Lord, I'm, my sin's more clear
to me now than it's ever been in my whole life. I need more
grace now than I've ever needed before. But the hope of my salvation
is that you have made with me an everlasting covenant. And
that covenant is ordered in all things, and it's sure. This is all my salvation and
all my desire. That's all the hope that I have,
not in my promises to God, but in His promises to me. Now that's,
look at Psalm 89 verse 28. My mercy will I keep for Him
evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast with Him. Now that's where I want to stand.
There's people in religion holding on to their traditions. Another
tradition is walking the aisle, praying a prayer, you know, all
the traditions of religion that men do in order to try to prove
their salvation. And people will look back to
an experience that they had, a prayer that they prayed, a
feeling that they had, a time when, you know, when they, and
they'll put their hope in that. That's where they'll stand. I
nailed it down. I'm standing fast right there.
God said, don't stand fast on your experience. Stand fast on
the promise that God made to God in the covenant of grace
because that's where God's standing. That's what He said. Look at
it again. My mercy will I keep for Him forevermore and my covenant
shall stand fast with Him. So what Paul say, 2 Thessalonians
chapter 2, stand fast in the tradition. What is the tradition? It's that which God has handed
down. What is he handed down? Knowledge
of his covenant. Look back in that same chapter,
we begin in verse 20. Now, you know when the scripture
speaks of David, it's not talking about David. It's talking about
the son of David. He's talking about the true sweet
psalmist of Israel. He's talking about the true King
of Israel. He's talking about the Lord Jesus
Christ. So these words spoken about David are prophetic and
they speak of Christ. Now look what he says in verse
20. I have found David my servant with my holy oil have I anointed
him. With whom my hand shall be established,
mine arm also shall strengthen him. The enemy shall not exact
upon him, nor the son of wickedness afflict him. And I will beat
down his foes before his face and plague them that hate him.
But my faithfulness and my mercy shall be with him, and in my
name shall his horn be exalted. I will set My hand also in the
sea, and His right hand in the rivers. He shall cry unto Me,
Thou art My Father and My God. My God, My God, why hast Thou
forsaken Me? And the rock of My salvation
I will make Him My firstborn, higher than the kings of the
earth. My mercy will I keep for Him forevermore, and My covenant
shall stand fast with Him. Stand fast, brethren, in the
covenant of grace. That's where God's standing.
God says, I'm going to stand fast in that covenant. His seed
also will I make to endure forever and His throne as the days of
heaven. Who are His seed? All those for
whom He died. His seed is going to stand forever. Now notice, notice the next verse. If His children forsake My law
and walk not in My judgments, are they going to lose their
salvation? Is the covenant going to change?
If they break My statutes and keep not My commandments, then
will I visit their transgressions with a rod and their iniquity
with stripes. Nevertheless, my loving kindness
will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness
to fail. My covenant will I not break,
nor alter the thing that has gone out of my lips. Once I have
sworn by my holiness, that will I not lie unto David. His seed shall endure forever,
and his throne as the sun set before me. It shall be established
forever as the moon and as the faithful witness in heaven. This covenant, God says, it's
not changing. You sin, I'm going to chastise
you. I'm going to correct you. I know
how to get your attention. I'm going to bring you back. But this covenant can't be changed.
It's established in eternity past. That's where God's standing. And my encouragement to you is
stand where God's standing. Stand fast in the tradition which
had been handed down to you by the word of the apostles and
by his epistles. Turn with me over just a couple
pages to Psalm 111. Psalm 111. Verse 2, the works of the Lord. What is his work? Salvation. That's his work. He didn't come
to try to save folks. He didn't come to offer salvation.
That's the tradition of religion. He actually saved His people.
He actually fulfilled the requirements of the covenant that He agreed
to with the Father. The works of the Lord are great,
sought out of all them that have pleasure therein. What we read
in 2 Thessalonians chapter 2, they've been They've been turned
over. Why? Because they took pleasure
in their unrighteousness. God sent them a strong delusion
that they should believe the lie. They believe the traditions
that have been passed down by man actually came from God. They believe that. But those who take pleasure in
the Lord's work, His work is honorable. His work
is glorious. His righteousness endureth forever. He hath made His wonderful works
to be remembered. The Lord is gracious and full
of compassion. He hath given meat unto them
that fear Him, and He will ever be mindful of His covenant. He hath showed His people the
power of His works, that He may give them the heritage of the
heathen, the works of His hands are verity and judgment. All His commandments are sure. They stand fast forever and ever
and are done in truth and uprightness. You're not real good at keeping
your promises to God, are you? You made a lot of them, hadn't
you? You haven't been faithful to them. He kept every one of his. His works are verity. His judgments are true. His promises
are faithful. Stand fast. in promises that
God made to God. Standing on the promises. What
do men do? They stand on their own promises.
I'm going to renew my promise to God. You don't want to keep it any
better the next time than you did the first time. But he kept
his promises. 1 Corinthians chapter 16 verse
13 says stand fast in the faith, in the faith. What is faith? Faith is looking unto Jesus who
is the author and the finisher of our faith, who for the joy
that was set before him endured the cross, despising its shame. He laid down His life for His
people. He fulfilled the covenant promises. Faith is looking to
Christ, resting in Christ, relying upon the Lord Jesus Christ for
all the hope of your salvation, for all your righteousness and
all of your justification before God. Faith is believing on the
Lord Jesus Christ. And God says stand fast in the
faith. Not in the faith. And then in Philippians chapter
4 verse 1, the Lord says, stand fast in the Lord, in the Lord. And the only way we're going
to have acceptance before God is to be found in Him, in Him. Not having my own righteousness
which is of the law, But that righteousness which is by the
faith of the Lord Jesus Christ. I've got to be found in Christ. Stand fast in the Lord. And in 1 Thessalonians chapter
3 verse 8 it says, Now we live if we stand fast in the Lord. I've just got to stay right there.
I can't move. What does stand fast mean? It
means don't move. Don't move, just stay right there. We live if we stand fast in the
Lord. And then in Galatians chapter
five, turn with me there, Galatians chapter five. I remind you, that the church in Galatia was the only of the epistles
that Paul wrote where he doubted their salvation. He said in verse 11 of chapter
4, I am afraid of you lest I have bestowed upon you
labor in vain. What was the heresy of the church
of Galatia? Well, it's described in chapter
three. verse 1, all foolish Galatians
who have bewitched you that you should not obey the truth. You're
not standing fast in the faith. You're not standing fast in the
Lord. You're not standing fast in the covenant promises that
God made to God. You're not standing there. You're
not standing fast in the traditions that God has given you. O foolish
Galatians, who have bewitched you, that you should not obey
the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently
set forth and crucified among you, this only would I learn
of you, received you the Spirit by the works of the law or by
the hearing of faith?" And not a single one of them would have
said, oh, we received the Spirit of God by the works of faith.
No, they would have all said, no, I mean, by the works of the
law. No, we received it by the hearing
of faith. Are you so foolish? Here is the
heresy of the church of Galatia. Verse 3, Are you so foolish having
begun in the spirit? Are you now made perfect by the
flesh? See, we are going to stand fast in the covenant for the
hope of our justification, but now we have got to make our contribution
for the hope of our sanctification. Progressive sanctification was
the heresy of the church of Galatia. We're going to get better by
what we're going to do. We're going to make ourselves
more pleasing in the sight of God by our works. We're going to be pleasing in
the sight of God by Christ. And so in chapter 5 at verse
1 he says, stand fast, stand fast therefore in the liberty
wherewith Christ has made you free and be not entangled again
by the yoke of bondage. You see, if you don't stand fast
in the faith and stand fast in the Lord and you think that somehow
I can improve on what Christ has already done, then the only
standard of measurement that you've got is the law. You've
got to go back under the law to figure out if you're getting
better. Behold, I, Paul, say unto you
that if you be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. You put your hand to your flesh
attempting to improve your position before God. Then you have, you've
robbed Christ of His glory. You've gone back to Egypt. That's
what Egypt's a picture of the law. You've gone back to Egypt. For I testify again to every
man that is circumcised that he is a debtor to do the whole
law and Christ has become of no effect unto you. Whosoever
you are justified by the law, you are fallen from grace. You
see, you're either under the law or you're under grace. You
can't be under both. You cannot be under both. You go back to
the law. The only way to go back to the
law is to fall from grace. Philippians chapter one and I
close, please. Philippians chapter one. Stand fast in that which has been handed
down from God. And don't replace the traditions
of God with the commandments of men. Don't replace grace with
the law. Stand fast in Christ. Don't move. Philippians chapter 1 verse 27,
only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of
Christ that whether I come and see you or else be absent, I
may hear of your affairs that you stand fast in one spirit
with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel." Is Christ divided? What is the
reason for all the different traditions in religion? What is the reason for it? It's
because they're the imagination of man's idolatry. That's all
it is. The Lord says, stand fast that
I might find you of one mind and one spirit. Here's been my
experience ever since the Lord saved me. Every time I meet a
believer, they believe the same thing I believe. We're not debating truth with
believers. We've been given one spirit,
one mind. We have the mind of Christ. Paul said stand fast. Stand fast
in one spirit with one mind striving together for the faith of the
gospel. Believers don't have different
gospels. They don't have different traditions. They have one tradition. And
they stand fast right there. They just don't move. Stand fast
in the tradition. Those things have been handed
down to you from God. And when man's traditions contradict
God's traditions, Believe God. Our Heavenly Father, we're thankful
for the revelation of the Gospel of Your free grace in the finished
work of Thy dear Son. We're thankful for the hope of
the covenant promises that we have to stand fast in. We're thankful for grace. We're
thankful for mercy. We're thankful, Lord, that You've
given to the hearts of Your people the same truth taught by the
same spirit from the same word and for the unity that you provide
for your children as they stand fast in the faith. We ask Lord that you would forgive
us for the many times that we look away and that you would
continue, Lord, to keep us by your grace. Grow us in your faith. We ask
it in Christ's name. Amen. 175, let's stand together. Standing on the promises of Christ
my King Through eternal ages let his praises ring Glory in
the highest I will shout and sing Standing on the promises
of God Standing, standing on the promises
of God, my Savior. Standing, standing, I'm standing
on the promises of God. Standing on the promises that
cannot fail, When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail, Standing on the promises
of God. Standing, standing, standing
on the promises of God my Savior. Standing, standing, I'm standing
on the promises of God. Standing on the promises of Christ
the Lord, Bound to Him eternally by love's strong cord, Overcoming
daily with the Spirit's sword, Standing on the promises of God. Standing, standing, standing
on the promises of God my Savior. Standing, standing, I'm standing
on the promises of God. Standing on the promises I cannot
fall, Listing every moment to the Spirit's call, Resting in
my Savior as my all in all, Standing on the promises of God. Standing, standing, standing
on the promises of God my Savior. Standing, standing, I'm standing
on the promises of God. Robert, are you new here?
