And Lord, if it would please you, would you call them out
of nature's darkness and also give them, Lord, a desire to
assemble together. Father, remember those of this
flock, Lord, that are have illnesses and difficulties, you know perfectly
what everyone has and carries with them. Father, that we may
be comforted in the Lord Jesus Christ, and will you return them
once again with us, Lord. Have mercy upon us for Jesus'

all thy saints above. Thank you. Good evening. Take your Bibles and let's turn
to Isaiah chapter 55. Isaiah 55 and we're going to
look primarily at verse 6 and close with verse 7, but let's
read verse 6 together. Seek ye the Lord while he may
be found, call ye upon him while he is near." When I first read
these words, I was reminded with something that Paul said when
he was speaking to the Athenian philosophers on Mars Hill. I
want you to turn there to Acts 17. Acts 17, Paul had been waiting
there for his brethren and he was walking about the city and
came upon a statue that said it was dedicated to the unknown
God. So when Paul had opportunity
to speak to these Greek philosophers, he declared to them the unknown
God. And he made known to them that
this God whom he preaches is the God who created the heavens
and the earth. And he told them that God doesn't
dwell in the temples that man makes for God. He's not confined
to those structures as ornate and beautiful as they might be.
And there was certainly a lot of temples built in Greece at
that time. And he also told them that God
isn't worshiped with men's hands. He's not even worshipped with
men's hands. Man doesn't do anything that brings glory to the God
who created us and the God that we serve. Our God who's our creator. And he told them also that God
is the giver of life and that he's the sustainer of life and
that all men were created of one blood by this God. And then he says in verse 27,
that God had left men to their devices, right? That God had
left men to their devices that they should seek the Lord, if
happily they might feel after Him and find Him, though we be
not far from every one of us. And we see the wisdom of God
in that, because leaving man to himself, allowing man to explore
and try to find out God, Man discovers that he doesn't know
God, that he can't find out God by the works of his hands and
by his own nature's wisdom. And so man doesn't know God. We conclude man doesn't know
God by his own nature, by his own talents, by his own skills,
by his own worship, so that he doesn't know the God who created
him. And Paul, declaring this truth
as well over in Romans 1 verse 20, he declared that, oh, we
know something of God in creation. When we look at the creation,
when we look at the heavens and the stars and this earth, and
we begin to explore these things and look into these things as
much as we can, we know something of God. He said in Romans 1 20,
the invisible things of God from the creation of the world are
clearly seen. being understood by the things
that are made, even God's eternal power and Godhead, so that men
are without excuse." And so when we look at creation, we can see
God's power, we can see His majesty and His glory, we see something
of His wisdom in looking at creation. And then, if men were to pick
up this Bible and we were to read the Old Testament, there
we could read of the history of God choosing a people, the
nation of Israel, where God revealed himself to this people called
Israel and he made provision for them, he defended them as
his chosen nation and we read in Deuteronomy chapter 14 verse
2 where Moses tells them, you're an holy people unto the Lord
thy God. And the Lord hath chosen thee
to be a peculiar people unto himself above all the nations
that are upon the earth. And as you read the Old Testament
and you look at their history, you can see that clearly this
is a people set apart by the Lord to be his people. You could
see what he did for them for thousands of years, revealing
himself to this people. And then we look at their law,
the law that was given to them on Mount Sinai. And we see God's
holiness. We see God's strict justice in
that law. And so fearful is that law that
the writer of the Hebrews, the book of the Hebrews, the apostle
Paul, he said concerning that mount, Mount Sinai, where the
law was given, he makes it known that if someone just so much
as touched that mount, that they should be killed, that they should
be destroyed for having that boldness to approach unto God
when God said don't touch that mount. He said in Hebrews 12
verse 18 that that mount burned with fire and there was blackness
and darkness and tempest. and the sound of a trumpet, and
the voice of words, which voice that they that heard entreated
that the word should not be spoken to them anymore. For they could
not endure that which was commanded, and if so much as a beast touched
the mountain, it should be stoned or thrust through with a dart,
and so terrible was the sight that Moses said, I exceedingly
fear and quake. And so I bring these things up
to ask you, did man find out God through creation? Does man come to know God in
studying the history of the Hebrews? Does man come to know God through
the law and through the practice and keeping of the law? in all
those things did any man seek the Lord and happen to feel after
Him and find Him? Did any man through those things
feel after God and find Him? According to his natural understanding,
did he find God through any of those things? And the answer
is no. No man isn't able to find out
God, isn't able to come to know the true and living God. In creation,
Paul says, their foolish heart was darkened and they became
fools. He said in Romans 1.23, they
changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to
corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping
things. And so man, in looking at creation,
worshiped himself. He thought God to be like himself. So he didn't come to know the
true and living God. And then when we look at Israel,
who were set apart by God to be his people, those people who
had the oracles of God and were given the scriptures and many
blessed things to teach them about God, we find that their
heart was hardened in sin over and over again. And if it wasn't
for God's grace, they would have been wiped out. God would have
destroyed them. And many perished as they came
out of Egypt. Many perished in the wilderness. Many perished under the time
of the judges. Many perished under the ruling
of the kings. Many perished under the preaching
of the prophets. And when they heard God's word
declared, they hardened their hearts. They stiffened their
necks. They rebelled against the true
and living God. They wouldn't hear his word. They wouldn't hear his prophets.
And instead, they persecuted the prophets. And they put to
death those that came and preached the word of God. And then, with
regards to the law, no man keeps the law. None of us, if we're
honest, can make our boast before God. Paul even noted that, well,
hey, circumcision verily profiteth if thou keep the law. But if
thou be a breaker of the law, then thy circumcision is counted
as uncircumcision. You might as well be uncircumcised. Just close your mouth before
the law. Don't even make your boast because anyone who tries
to come to God in the law will very quickly find themselves
under the curse of the law. And so the best that all of us
can say is that by the law, there's a knowledge of sin. I have a
knowledge of sin. I see what a sinner I am. I see how far short I come of
the glory of God. And so the law actually shuts
our mouths before God, so that we don't boast before God. And
so we see that we're sinners, we see that we've broken God's
law, and that there's nothing we can do in looking for him
in creation, and looking for him in the history of his word,
trying to become Israelites and Jews, putting ourselves under
the law. There's nothing that we can do to remove our sin and
reconcile ourselves to God. We've broken God's law. And on
top of that, our nature is enmity against the true and living God.
We dwell in darkness. We don't even want to know the
true and living God. All we want to know is our way. We want to seek out our own way,
our own devices to come to God, and we want God to be happy with
that. but we're not happy with God's way and what God says in
his words. And so there's a law enmity that
must be put away. Our sin must be dealt with. It must be put away. And then there's a natural enmity
in our hearts, in our minds, in which by nature we hate the
very God who created us. the very God who is perfect and
wondrous and holy and righteous and glorious before our eyes. And so we see in all this, in
all this seeking of man and all the history of man's seeking
and feeling after God and trying to come to a knowledge of God,
we find that there's nothing we can do to put away our sin
and there's nothing we can do to remove the enmity, the hatred
that's in our hearts for God. There's nothing that we can do.
There's not a work. There's not a confession of religion
that we can just take up on our lips and use that to bring ourselves
to the true and living God. There's not a sacrifice that
we can make that will reconcile us to the true and living God
who created us. And on top of that, man wills
not. to put away the enmity. He wants
to do it his way. As our Lord said in John 5.40,
and ye will not come unto me that ye might have life. Man
has a will, and it's a cursed will. It's a will that will not
come to God through the way of salvation, the Lord Jesus Christ. Man's gonna do what he wants
to do, and being in enmity, it's contrary to the way of God. And so in that context, in that
light, These words that our God speaks to His people in verse
6 are incredible. He says, Seek ye the Lord while
he may be found. Call ye upon him while he is
near. These words are words of reconciliation. These are God's words and they
are words of reconciliation. they're spoken to a people whom
he's prepared, being gracious to them. being very kind and
gracious to them. Remember, these words are in
the context of that invitation that he gives to his people,
whom he's given an ear to hear his word. When he said, ho, in
verse one, chapter 55, verse one, ho, everyone that thirsteth,
come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money, come ye,
buy and eat, yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without
price. God has shown them that that
which they trusted in, that which they thought was money and thought
was strength to labor, God has emptied them of it and showed
them that which you value is of no value to me. That which
is your strength is weakness with me. It counts for nothing. As he said in the next verse,
that you're spending money on things that are not bread, and
you're laboring hard for things that don't give you any satisfaction,
that don't reconcile you to me. But the Lord himself comes and
says those gracious words, seek ye the Lord while he may be found,
call ye upon him while he is near. And so the Lord is saying,
if any among you are poor and needy, in need of God's forgiveness,
in need of God forgiving you for your sins and your rebellion,
in need of God's healing because we've broken, we've destroyed
ourselves in sin and in enmity against God, if any among you
are hungry and thirsty for righteousness, the righteousness of God. Understand these words are words
of reconciliation. So man can't reconcile himself
to God, but God is able to reconcile a man to himself. Man can't do it, but God can. And he does this through the
Lord Jesus Christ. And so I've titled our message
tonight, Reconciliation. Reconciliation, because these
are words of reconciliation. Now by reconciliation, what I
mean is that we've got sin in the way. Our sin has to be dealt
with. And it's God who removes that
burden, that mountain of sin that stands between us and God
so that we can't be reconciled to God. God removes it. He removes that sin which is
blocking us from coming to the Lord and our Lord also then comes
to us and reconciles us. He removes that enmity within
our hearts and our minds against him so that there's a friendship,
there's an open fellowship between God and men. And I say men because
there's a particular people for whom our Lord does this work
of grace for. He does this work for them. And
so God hath given to us, to His Church, the ministry of reconciliation. And Paul writes in 2 Corinthians
5 verse 19, he says to it that God was in Christ, reconciling
the world unto Himself. meaning not just the Jews, not
just to reconcile the Jews to himself, but those Gentiles scattered
out to the ends of the world. God was reconciling the whole
world, that is, all his chosen sheep, lost and scattered out
there, he was reconciling them unto himself through Christ,
not imputing their trespasses unto them, and hath committed
unto us the word of reconciliation, to make this known to you, to
declare these words of kindness, these gracious words, that he's
given to his people in his son Jesus Christ. So in this instruction
of the Lord in verse 6, Isaiah 55 6, seek ye the Lord while
he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near. These words come to the needy
sinner. by the Spirit of God and His
power, in gracious power whereby we're brought to our Lord, whereby
we find that He's given us an ear to hear that we need Him
and that He's willing to receive all who come to Him. through
the way of salvation that he's provided in his son. And there's
a people that will hear that word. There's a people whom he's
purposed to hear that word and they shall hear it and be reconciled
to God through the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. Now there's two things here about
reconciliation that I want to speak to tonight. I just want
to clarify these in your mind because I think they're a blessing
and they'll cause you to rejoice in the Lord as you dwell on what
he's accomplished for us who are undeserving of God's friendship
and undeserving of God's reconciliation, undeserving of that peace and
forgiveness with God. So first there's a reconciliation
that's made for sin, to put away that sin, because we broke God's
law. And then we became rebels. We became defiled and rebels
and corrupted in Adam, and because of that corruption, we're enemies
against God in our hearts and minds, and don't go, don't know
the way, don't want to know the way of salvation. And our Lord
deals with that as well. He also removes that enmity in
our flesh against Him. He speaks of that enmity in Romans
chapter 8. You can go there, Romans chapter
8. where he tells us in verse seven
that the carnal mind, that's what we have by nature, that
carnal mind in this flesh is enmity against God. For it is
not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. And he
tells us, because man tries to reconcile himself to God, but
he declares in verse eight, they that are in the flesh cannot
please God. There's nothing man can do to
reconcile himself to God. These two truths, that enmity
in the law has to be removed, our sin has to be removed, and
that enmity within us, that enmity against God has to be removed
as well, these are seen in Romans chapter 5. Turn to Romans 5 and
look at verse 10. He says, For if when we were
enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son,
much more being reconciled, having our sin removed by the blood
of Christ, we shall be saved by His life. or delivered from
that enmity in our hearts and minds by Christ's life. And so that scene when our God
then brings us out of darkness, into the light, into the way
of Christ, the way of salvation, removed from that broad way that
leads to destruction, and put into that narrow way which leads
to life. That's all the work of our God,
which he also does as a result of the work of Christ to put
away our sin. And so we see that two-fold reconciliation. One was where Christ made satisfaction
to God by the death of himself to put away our sin. And then
we see the blessings that we have in the Lord Jesus Christ
whereby we are reconciled to God. where we call upon Him,
where we hear His voice, where we hear His words, His gracious
words to us, the needy sinner, in calling us to Himself and
are drawn to Him with faith born in us, wrought in us by the Spirit
of God. And so that enmity in us is removed. And we confess the Lord, and
we love the Lord, and we rejoice in Him, and give Him all the
thanks and praise and the glory for what He's done for us and
His Son. And our text this evening, verse
6 there, it's really focusing on that second part of reconciliation,
where that enmity in us is removed. and we're brought into fellowship
with our God. So, let me just say, let's just
look at these two reconciliations to see them a little more. Now,
understand that, as we said before, man doesn't reconcile himself
to God. Man wasn't looking to be reconciled
to God. Man is happy in his darkness,
in his death, in his pit. of filth. Reconciliation begins
in the mind of our God. It began in His mind. He determined
to do it. 2 Corinthians 5.18 says, All
things are of God. Our God is the first cause of
all things. And He hath reconciled us to
Himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry
of reconciliation. So our God authored reconciliation
and then the Lord Jesus Christ brought it into execution. He brought, he ratified it with
his blood. He implemented this covenant
of grace. He brought it into being by the
death of himself. Turn to Colossians chapter one. Go to Colossians one and we'll
pick up in verse 20. The Apostle Paul writes there,
saying, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him
to reconcile all things unto himself, by him I say whether
they be things in earth or things in heaven. And you that were
sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works,
yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through
death to present you holy and unblameable and unreprovable
in his sight. And so our Lord's death His coming
as our substitute, He made reconciliation for our sin. He removed that
sin. He obtained forgiveness for our
sin because our sin was laid upon Him and He sacrificed Himself
to the Father, satisfying the holiness and the wrath of God
in Himself, poured out upon Him that we should go free, that
we should be freed from that that sin which we couldn't free
ourselves from. And so our Lord's blood atoned
for our sin, covers our sin, puts it away. So that law enmity,
if you will, which had to be put away, was. It was put away
by the Lord Jesus Christ. We read in Hebrews 2, Hebrews
2 verse 17, turn there. Wherefore in all things it behooved
Christ to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a
merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God,
to make reconciliation, for the sins of the people. So that law enmity was slain. That mountain of sin that stood
in the way, that had to be dealt with, was put away by the Lord
Jesus Christ. And then having made satisfaction
to God, and that covenant of grace being established for us,
That's where all the spiritual blessings of God are poured out
onto us in the Lord Jesus Christ. As Paul said over in Ephesians
1 3, blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who
hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places
in Christ Jesus, in our Lord. And so, of those blessings, not the least
of which those blessings include our being brought, our being
reconciled to God now, with that enmity being removed. And so,
that enmity that's in us by nature is destroyed at our conversion,
when our Lord pours out His Spirit upon us, in our hearts, so that
we are reconciled unto our God. That is, we are We are born again
by the seed of Christ. Gone is our life in Adam. That's put away. Our life is
hid with God in Christ. We're now Christ's creation. And so being born again, we have
spiritual life and spiritual knowledge, a knowledge of the
way of salvation by our God. And so in the day of grace, when
it pleases the Lord, he sends his spirit. He gives us an ear. He brings us under the preaching
of the gospel. We hear his call. We hear him
speaking to us. He gives us that need whereby
we call out upon him, Lord, have mercy on me. Save me, Lord. Don't leave me behind. He creates
the needy sinner because He purposed to save that sinner in the day
of His grace. And so we're brought to life,
we're brought into the light to see what our God has wrought
for us by His grace and mercy. Over in Titus 3, Titus chapter three, picking
up in verse three, we see what we were by nature, we see our
need, well, we see the enmity that we are by nature and our
need of being delivered from. the enmity that's in us. And
so Paul said in Titus 3, verse 3, we ourselves also were sometimes
foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving diverse lusts and pleasures,
living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. But after
that, the kindness and love of God our Savior toward man appeared. not by works of righteousness
which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us by the
washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost." And so we
see how our God, having put away our sin, having reconciled us
by putting away our sin, then reconciles us by bringing us
out of that darkness and enmity. And so our text declares In Isaiah
55 verse 6, seek ye the Lord while he may be found. Call ye
upon him while he is near. These gracious words are spoken
to you who have been given an ear to hear. You know your sin. You know your unworthiness before
the Lord. But he says, don't look to those
things. Come to me. Look unto me, the Lord says.
And be ye saved, all ye ends of the earth, because he has
provided the way of salvation in his Son, freely, abundantly,
graciously, to put away the sin, and assures you, all who come
to me, I will be gracious to them, because I've dealt with
the sin, I've reconciled you by putting away the sin, and
I'm calling you to myself," he says, believe on the Lord Jesus
Christ, believe on him, trust him, God is giving you his word. Trust Him. Believe on Him. Come
to Him. Seek the Lord while He may be
found. Call you upon Him while He's near. And He makes His people
obedient to the call. Because you find, Lord, I need
that. I believe you, Lord. Because
He makes you willing in the day of His power. He reveals your
need and causes you to hear satisfaction for your need in Christ. And
so by His grace, He declares it in the gospel that He has
opened the door of fellowship, the door of grace. It's in the
Son. And all who come to Him through
Jesus Christ the righteous shall be received of God and are declared
just and righteous by God and shall be received. into his kingdom
in that day of judgment because you have no sin and nothing that
keeps you separated from your God. And then he says look in
verse 7 back in our text Isaiah 55 7 let the wicked forsake his
way and the unrighteous man his thoughts and let him return unto
the Lord and he will have mercy upon him and to our God for he
will abundantly pardon. And so our God calls his people
away from their way and says, don't trust in your work. You
didn't find me in studying creation. You didn't learn of me in studying
just the word and the history of Israel and thinking that I
had to become like them. Hey, let's go back to the types
and the shadows and the pictures and see if maybe that'll fire
up some feeling in me for God. No, put all that away. He says,
don't trust in those things. Don't try to come to me through
the law and trying to work a righteousness for yourself and trying to prove
yourself and do enough good works to make you acceptable to God.
Don't trust in those things. Be turned from your way. And
hear what the Lord says, I've provided the way, the highway,
the way of salvation, the Lord Jesus Christ, believe him. For all who come to him trusting
the Lord Jesus Christ shall be received. They are received.
They are blessed and called of God and be comforted because
God has reconciled you to himself and the Lord Jesus Christ. So
I pray he blessed that word. to your hearts and that you rejoice
in the reconciliation your Savior has accomplished for you that
are his. Let's pray. Our gracious Lord,
we thank you, Father, for your grace and mercy. We thank you
for providing the way of salvation. Lord, you, in mercy, in kindness, Lord,
you dealt with everything that was the problem. Lord, you dealt
with our sin, you put it away, And you dealt with the enmity
in our hearts and minds and putting that away. And Lord, we thank
you. Even while we were yet enemies,
even while we were yet dead in trespasses and sins, Lord, you
did all this work of grace for us. And then, Lord, you caused
us to hear your gospel, to hear your word, to hear your promises
in Christ, to hear your words of peace. and grace and kindness
in the Lord Jesus Christ. And Lord, you gave us faith to
believe and a willing heart to come unto you, to look to you
and trust you. Lord, keep us ever looking to
the Lord Jesus Christ. Keep us ever calling upon our
Savior and trusting him. the name of our Savior that we

that chosen and redeeming God, by grace alone save me Sinner, now have you heard my
