when Moses was born and then
we are going to hear an awful lot about him and when you consider
men in the scriptures from Adam to Christ and Adam
was a figure of him that was to come the Lord Jesus Christ
both of them being representative people and But when you go through
the list of people, men, in the scriptures, Moses, other than
Adam and Christ, and of course Adam plunged us into death and
sin, and Christ as our representative saved us out of death and sin. But there's none greater than
Moses. I was going to count how many times he'd been mentioned
just in the New Testament, just in the four Gospels and it's
astronomical how many times he is mentioned just in the four
Gospels but not counting how many times his name is mentioned
in the Old Testament but there's none greater than Moses he is
one of the few men in the scriptures that tells his life from the
day he's born to the day that John buries him tells his whole
life His whole life. Joseph, we've not even found
Joseph when he's born. He's a young man before we ever
comes on the scene. Daniel, you don't know anything
about him, but there's some men in the scriptures from their
birth to their death. Jacob was one. We followed him
from his birth to his death. Our Lord Jesus Christ, we followed
him from his birth to his death. Well, that's the way Moses is.
And when you start looking at him in the scriptures, as God
describes him in the scriptures, in the blessed word of God, describes
his character, his faith, and God put him in a special position
like he put nobody else. He made him the mediator. of
the Old Covenant is the mediator between God and men in the Old
Testament and that way he was typical of our Lord Jesus Christ. And when you look at what he
did in the Old Testament he stands out first among all the saints
in the Old Testament. First. First. He's the first. In all of God's dealings All
of God's dealings with Israel was through and by Moses. As
God's dealings is through all of his elect and all of his people
is through and by the Lord Jesus Christ. Let me tell you some
things he was. He was a prophet. God called
him a prophet. He was a prophet. And he was
a priest. He offered sacrifice, intercede
for Israel. And then he was a ruler. Judge
all in one person all in one person. He's the only man who
ever seen God Face-to-face in a burning bush and Walked away
Alive and the Lord Jesus Christ is the only other man has seen
God face to face and when he came out from the presence of
God he came out with life and gave us life and Moses couldn't
give these people's life, but God gave us life in Christ. And
I am Haldeman. I like Hawaiian Haldeman. This
is something, this is what he said about Moses. He said he
was the child of a slave and the son of a queen. He was born
in a hut and he lived in a palace. He inherited poverty and then
enjoyed unlimited wealth. He was the leader of armies and
the keeper of flocks. He was the mightiest of warriors
and the meekest man on the earth. He was educated in the court
of Pharaoh and dwelt in the desert for 40 years. He had the wisdom
of Egypt and the faith of a child. He was fitted to live in the
city, but he wandered in the wilderness. He was tempted with
the pleasures of sin, but he endured the hardship of virtue. He was backward in speech, but
yet he talked with God. He had the rod of a shepherd
and the power of the infinite. He was a fugitive from Pharaoh
and an ambassador from heaven for Pharaoh. He was the giver of the law and
the forerunner of grace. He died alone on Mount Moab and
then centuries later he appeared with Christ on the mountain. No man was ever at his funeral. There was no one at his funeral
but God. And God buried him. And that's a good testimony.
And here he is in Exodus 2. We have just a brief account
of his infancy, of his birth. And I'm going to read a few verses
and comment on them and read a few more and comment on them
save from reading the whole chapter. And there went a man of the house
of Levi. Aaron and Moses was both of the
house of Levi. And there went a man of the house
of Levi and took to wife a daughter of Levi. And the woman conceived
and bear a son. And when she saw him that he
was a goodly child, she hid him three months. And when she could
no longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes,
endowed it with slime and with pitch, fixed it where it would
hold water and water wouldn't get in it. And put the child
there and she laid it in the flags by the river's break. And here's the thing, this mother,
his mother loved her child. You know she loved him. And she
kept him for three months. And because Pharaoh said, let's
deal wisely with the children of Israel. Let's deal widely
with them. Let's tell them that every son
that's born has to be slain and save all the women children alive. Well, she had a son. Pharaoh
had already said that if you have a son, he's got to die.
So she kept this child, she had him for three months. Three months
old. You know how old, just how small
a baby is at three months? Helpless. Nothing can do nothing. And yes, Mrs. Mother loved her
child, but it wasn't love for him that caused her to act like
she did. She never prepared that ark,
and never put him in that ark, and prepared that ark, and put
slime in that ark, and then put pitch in that ark, the same word
used in the ark of the, in the flood, pitched it, and made that
little, you know how small it had to be? to lay a three-month-old
baby in. It couldn't have been very big.
But she built this thing. Went to great length and great
care to build this little fella an ark and took him and laid
him in the river. Laid him down at the edge of
the river. Would you put a three-month-old baby in the river no matter what
it was in? Well, she did. And you know what
the Bible says about it? I'm going to read it to you.
It says this. By faith, Moses, when he was
born, was hid three months of his parents. Gotta hide him from
Pharaoh, gotta hide him from everybody. Was hid three months
by his parents because they saw that he was a proper child. By
faith, she did that. By faith, she built that ark.
By faith, she prepared that ark. By faith, she put that child
in that ark. And by faith they put that child
in that river. And they were not afraid of the
king's commandment. Oh my. Here's the thing. You know you go through the scriptures
and you find men that's not afraid. Oh so many people that's missed
this way this mother was and her father, his father was. They
were not afraid of the king's commandment. And oh my, they
were not just like Daniel. I talked about him this morning,
dad, and I said Belshazzar, but it's Darius. Darius made this,
they talked to all of his advisors, told him to make a law that they could only pray to
this statue that he had made. And you had to come and pray
to that statue. And people have been praying
to statues as long as people have been people. And Daniel,
see, instead of doing that, he went off and prayed. Three times
a day. And they said, we got him, we
got him. But Daniel wasn't afraid of that
king. Daniel wasn't afraid of being put in the lion's den.
I'll tell you this, like Simon Peter. They brought him and James
before all the Sanhedrin, all 70 of them. And they told them,
said, you don't never preach in this man's name again. If
we catch you preaching this Jesus Christ again and spreading this
doctrine around in Jerusalem, we're going to kill you. You
understand that? You know what Peter said? Should we obey God or you? I tell you what, I don't know,
I'm being honest with you, if I was put before 70 men, and
they all gathered around, and they threatened me with death, if I didn't quit preaching Christ,
I'd like to think I'd be like Simon Peter. I'd like to think
I'd be like that. And I hope God never puts me
in that position. But I'd like to think I'd be
that way. But these people, Moses' mother and daddy saw that he
was a goodly child. In other words, God had his hand
on him. This is a child that everybody thinks their children
are goodly children. Everybody thinks that. There's
an old saying, every mother thinks her little crow is the blackest.
And that's the truth. They think nobody's babies are
like their babies. And that's the way they were
with him. And yet they put him in that ark and laid him in that
ark and they trusted God to prepare him. Now what they said, they've
done that by faith. Now where in the world did they
find out that this was a goodly child and that God would preserve
him and that God would use him one of these days? How in the
world did they know to do that? God in His sovereign mercy, some
way, I don't know how He did it, but He communicated to them
through His word, some way, somehow. I don't know how He did it. But
the scriptures tells us that faith cometh by hearing, and
if they did that by faith, then where did they hear about faith
at? Where did they get their faith at? Had to be from God. And oh my, she laid Him in a
ark. And everybody knows what flags is when you go down to
the river. Them old flags that come up all over the edge of
the river. And old rods and stuff that come up. She laid him in
an ark. And she cut down there and laid
him in those flags. And you know there's three arks
in the scripture. Three. And all three of them
represent salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ. There's the ark
in which Noah was put. God told him how to build it.
And he pitched it within and without. And he says, come into
the ark. And he got in that ark. And the
wrath of God and the judgment of God fell on that ark. But
everyone in that ark was saved. And I tell you what, the judgment
of Christ, God came on Christ and everyone in Christ is saved. And that's why God said, our
Lord Jesus Christ said, come unto me and learn of me. There's
my son, bless his name, hear him. Salvation was in that heart. There was no place else for a
person to be saved other than getting in that heart. You have
to get in that ark. And I'm telling you, beloved,
when that water, when it started raining, and we've seen some
awful, awful floods, and lots and lots of people die. And floods
just in the last two years. Lots of people do. Houses being
under water. But you imagine it raining, and
then God breaking up the deep, too, and making water come up
out of the ground. And water goes to rising. And
that ark goes to rising. And it gets up to a man's waist.
And he's holding his babies up. And God Moses, Noah preached
for 120 years. 120 years. Judgment's coming. Judgment's
coming. It's gonna rain. It's gonna rain. Me and my family,
we're gonna get in this ark. And I tell you, when it got too
deep, when the water started raining, when it started raining
and the water started rising, it was too late. Once that door
was shut, nobody else. And that's the way it is in Christ.
If you don't get in Christ, there ain't no other place you can
go. If you don't get in Christ, that ark, where God saves people
only in Christ, you read it tonight. Lord, show us the way. I am the way. And oh my, then the
second ark was this one. This little ark. And river represents
death. You know, when we pass through
the Jordan, and when we pass over the river, you find over
Jeremiah, they're passing through the river. And God said, when
you go through the rivers, I'll go with you. Well that river
represents death. Going through a river and if
you can't get across it, you know God had to part the Jordan
River. And so they go through that.
And that baby was saved in that ark. And beloved, the only way
in the world we're going to be saved is in Christ. He's the
one that gets us through the rivers. He's the one that keeps
the water from going over our heads. He's the one that holds
us up. And the third ark is the ark
of the covenant. And that was that ark. We'll
get to that here next. This is made out of gold. Square. There's a wooden box and they
overlaid it with gold. And they put that thing and then
they put a gold and the law was inside it. A pot of manna and
Aaron's rod didn't budge. That was in that ark. and that
ark was put behind the veil in the holiest of holies and the
high priest only went behind that ark behind that veil one
time to go to that and that gold top that was on it that's called
the mercy seat and that mercy seat is what covered that law
That broken law, that shattered base that I talked about this
morning. And that mercy seat was there. And God said, I swear I'll meet
you on that mercy seat. Christ is our mercy seat. So
salvation in all three of those hearts. In our Lord Jesus Christ. But they laid Him in an ark.
And I tell you what. And that river is a place of
death. But it wasn't for this child and it isn't for us if
God's for us. He was in the ark. He was in
the ark. And I'll tell you what. Thank
God that He provided us an ark. Provided us a hiding place. Provided
us a place in His blessed Son. And then He was saved from this
place of death. This river. Just a three month
old baby. Now watch what happens. And see
down there in verse 4. And his sister, this is Miriam,
his sister. When your mother took him down
there and laid him in those flags by the river brinks, and his
sister stood afar off to witness what would be done to him. What's
going to happen to this, my blue brother? What's going to happen
to him? She was big enough to know what's going to happen to
him. Now watch what happened. And the daughter of Pharaoh came
down to wash at the river. And her maidens walked along
by the riverside. And when she saw the ark, among
the flags, she said, or made the fetching. And when she had
opened it, she saw the child. And behold, the baby wept. He
started crying. And she had compassion on him
and said, listen to this now. This is one of the Hebrew's children.
Her daddy said, he's not supposed to be alive. But Pharaoh's daughter
saw him. Then Moses' sister walked up
to her and said this, shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the
Hebrew women that she may nurse the child for thee? And Pharaoh's
daughter said to her, go. And the maid went and called
the child's mother. How in the world that happened?
Boy she had good luck, that little old youngin had good luck didn't
he? Pharaoh's daughter said unto
her, said unto Moses' mother, now you think God ain't in, you
talking about Romans 8.28 being played out right before our eyes
here. And take this child away and nurse it for me. And I'm
going to pay you for it. And the woman took the child,
got her own baby back. Oh my! This is Romans 8.28 illustrated
for us. She just didn't happen by there.
It wasn't luck. It wasn't chance. It wasn't an
accident. That Pharaoh's daughter went
to the river that day. Went to that place where Moses
was. When she saw that ark. She didn't
know what was in that ark. But I do know this, I know this
without a shadow of a doubt and so do you that whatever happens
in time was decreed from God by God from all eternity. Whatever
happens in time in my life, your life or anybody else's life in
this world is anything that happens in time was decreed by God before
the world ever began. I can show you that in the scriptures.
Look in Proverbs 19.21. Look at it. Look at it with me.
Proverbs 19.21. Look what he says over here. Oh boy, look at this here. There are many devices in a man's
heart. Oh, he's got lots of devices.
I'm gonna go here, I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna do another
thing, I'm gonna do things this way, that way, and I'm gonna
figure this out that way, I'm gonna go here, I'm gonna do that.
Lots of devices in a man's heart. Ways to devise yourself. Now
listen to this. No matter what a man devises
in his heart, nevertheless, the counsel of the Lord. That's what's
going to stand. Just go ahead and devise all
you want to. God said, my counsel is going to stand. Look in Isaiah
46. I can quote this to you. I've
quoted it to you many times. Look in Isaiah 46, in verse 10. You know, this is, that's what
Jeremiah said, this is not in man, To know how to walk. The Lord directs us His path.
In Isaiah 46.10, look what it says here. Well, look in verse
9. Remember the former things of
old. For I am God and there is none
else. I am God and there is none like me. Declaring the end from
the beginning. Now I can't do that. I don't
know what I can begin something but I have no idea how it's going
to end up. I've started a lot of things
that don't end up so good. But God says that I declare the end. I declare what's going
to happen at the last thing that's going to ever happen from the
beginning. And from ancient times the things
that are not yet done saying my counsel shall stand and I
will do all my pleasure. That's God. That's the God I
love. That's the God we worship. That's
the God we delight in. Wouldn't you hate to get up tomorrow
and be left in the hands of fate? Or be left in the hands of the
God who don't have any power? Who don't have any will? Who
don't have any might? who can't do anything for us
unless we let him? That we have to live right to
get on his good side? But I thank God, I'm telling
you, when He said He numbered the hairs of our head, that's
what He said. I declared the end from the beginning.
I numbered the hairs of your head. I numbered every day you're
going to have. I numbered every breath you're
going to take. I numbered every heartbeat you're going to have.
I numbered everything about you in your life. And I know when
the end is going to be for everything in this world. And I tell you
what, you read Revelation and you find out what the end is. The bride has made herself ready. And then he said he calls everyone
to the marriage supper. And the lamb has his bride. Oh, we know how this thing is
going to end. He said, oh listen, when this thing ends, goats going
to be over here. Sheeps going to be over here. And you know how long judgment
will take? That's all it'll take. That's all it'll take. You know
how people picture this thing, you know, people walking up in
line, you know, and God's sitting on the throne. He's just making
decisions as they step up in front of Him. No, no, no, that's
not. All of God's going to be over
here. All the sheep's going to be over here. And all these sheep
over here, they're all right there and there because Christ
died for them. Christ laid down His life for them. And He knows
them all by name. And they know Him. They are over
here. They have not been judged. They
are not going to be judged. They have not been judged. And
all the ghosts are over here. And when they see God and see
the Lord Jesus Christ sitting on His throne, they will know
immediately. They will know immediately what
their fate is and what their destiny is. Just that quick.
God ain't going to put no big screen up here and let our lives
run before us. Out there some old famous preachers
used to preach that there would be tears in heaven. People would
get up there and cry because now they found the Lord Jesus
Christ in their life. And they didn't live a dedicated
enough life. And they'll get to heaven and they'll see Him
and they'll just go to crying because they just don't, they
just didn't love Him enough and didn't deserve to, you know,
and all of this. I didn't do enough for Jesus.
And they said there would be tears in heaven. You know what,
Bob, this is another thing that God said, this is where the end
takes them. He said, all their tears I'll
wipe away. There'll be no more crying, no
more death, no more sorrow, no more sighing. That's the end. God not only directs the rise
and fall of empires, but also the fall of the little sparrow.
And he's the one that moved this woman to be where she was at
the time that she was and Moses where he was. He moved her heart
to be filled with compassion. Why wasn't she angry when she
saw that and opened it up and said, this is a Hebrew child.
She understood this is a male Hebrew child. And her dad had
already, her father had already sent out the law, kill him. Why
wasn't she angry? Why did she defy her father? He is a proper child. He is God's
child. He is God's child. That's why.
And oh my. And God calls her. Miriam was
standing there watching. And God calls her to listen to
her sister Miriam. His sister Miriam. It was God
who made her willing for the child's own mother to care for
her own baby. This is an illustration of God
preserving His elect during their lives, all the days of their
life. And Pharaoh said, oh, we'll deal
wisely with the Hebrews. And look what it says in verse
10 over here in chapter 1. Look what it said. Come, let's deal wisely with
them. And then go down to the last Part of the verse and fight
against us and so get them up out of the land He's afraid they'd
all get get together and fight again. They get up out of the
land But he little did he know that this baby right here is
the one that's gonna be bringing them up out of the land He said
real deal wisely, but this is Moses Now I want to show you
his failure his birth, but look at his failure down here in verse
11 And she said I drew him out of the water Now look what happens
here, I'll hurry. And it came to pass in those
days when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren,
around the Hebrews, around the Jews, and looked on their burdens. Oh, listen, he's living up in
Pharaoh's house now, see. Pharaoh's daughter's son. And
oh, he looked on their burdens. And he spied an Egyptian smiting
a Hebrew, one of his brethren. And look what it said, he looked
this way and that way, and when he saw that there is no man,
he slew the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. And when he
went out the second day, behold, two men of the Hebrews strove
together, and he said to him that did the wrong, Wherefore
smitest thou thy fellow? And he said, Who made thee a
prince and a judge over us? Intendest thou to kill me as
thou had killed the Egyptian? And Moses feared and said, Surely
this thing is known. And he looked on their burdens.
Oh, here's a man of compassion that he saw an Egyptian and he,
the scripture said he looked. He seen that Egyptian, he looked
this way and he looked that way. Well, you have to look this way
and that way to make sure nobody's looking at you when you do something.
Don't do it. That's what he would do. He looked
that way and this way to make sure nobody's looking. And that's
when he killed him. And he buried him in the sand.
And I tell you, here shows us this, that the Holy Spirit doesn't
conceal the saints' sins or their defects. And here's what he was,
here's his problem, was this, he was in such a big hurry to
save his brethren, to save the Jews, the Hebrews, that he was
running before God sent him. And he has to go and sit on the
backside of the desert for 40 years for God to prepare him. and make him used to it. He looked
this way, saw a hole and he slew. And when we have to look to see
if anyone's watching, it's wrong. And let me show you this. I'll
read it to you so you won't have to look over at it. But this
is what God said about Moses. Though he showed him his defects
over here, but in the New Testament he never reveals them. By faith
Moses when he was born, no excuse me, verse 24, by faith Moses
when he was come to years, refused to be called the sons of Pharaoh's
daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people
of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season, esteeming
the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in
Egypt, for he had respect unto the recompense of the Lord."
Oh my! And Moses said, surely, surely
this thing is known. And the fear of man brings a
snare. It wasn't time for God to deliver Israel out of Egypt.
And Moses intentions was good, very good. He loved his brethren.
But his method was wrong. God saves, he don't kill. And
also he must be prepared so God sent Pharaoh on his trail. Look
what it said in verse 15. Now when Pharaoh heard this thing,
he sought to slay Moses. Then Moses fled from the face
of Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of Midian. Midian is said down
by a well. And I'll tell you, surely this
thing is known, the fear of man brings a snare and it was for
him. And then look what happened. So Pharaoh set out on his trail. And look what happens here in
verse 16. Now he went and sat down by a well in the land of
Midian. Now the priest or the prince
had seven daughters, the priest of Midian, prince of Midian,
had seven daughters and they came and drew water and filled
the troughs to water with their father's flock. He's drawing
water and he's going to water all the sheep and all the goats. And the shepherds came and drove
them away. They all got to come in there
and run all them women away. Look what happened, but Moses
stood up and helped them and he watered their flock. And when
they came to rule their father, he said, how is it that you've
come so soon today? How come it's already done? You've
gone and fed and watered the sheep? Yeah, we have. And they
said, an Egyptian, they didn't know he was a Hebrew, an Egyptian
delivered us out of the hands of the shepherds and also drew
water enough for us and watered the flock. And he said unto his daughters,
and where is he? And why is it that you have left
this man? Call him, that he may eat bread. And Moses was content
to dwell with a man, and he gave Moses the poor, his daughter
and a wife. And the scriptures tells us that
God gave him favor in rural sight. God provided him a home. God
provided him work. God provided him a wife. And
God gave him and was preparing him for the work that he would
be called to do before he ever went back down to Egypt. But
God prepared him, gave him everything that he wanted. He had to flee,
had to run, because he was trying to take the work upon himself
that God gave him to do and he'd done the wrong way. And if God
doesn't direct our steps, we will take the wrong way. We'll
do the wrong thing. But oh God, watch he was born,
put in the ark, saved out of that ark, taken into this princess's
house, son of Pharaoh's daughter, run out of Egypt. Where am I
going to go? Vagabond and a fugitive. He goes
somewhere and God directed his steps and said, oh listen, I
know exactly where to put you. I know exactly cause you what
to do. And I know the wife that I want you to have and I know
the place where I want you to live. That's God. That's God. Our Father, in the precious name
of the Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for the day. Oh, it's a day
that you've made. Every day is your day. And every
day we worship you, and every day we look to you. We don't
have one day set aside, just one day set aside. And the rest
of the time we don't worship you or know you. No, Lord, every
day we worship you, every day we call on you, every day we
look to you. And Lord, we thank you that you
allow us to gather as a body of believers, to gather around
your word, And you give us that heavenly manna. Give us that
water from heaven. Thank you for these dear saints.
Thank you for the love that you put in their hearts for me and
the great patience you put in their hearts for me. And Lord,
the willingness to bear. the burdens of others. Lord, I thank you and bless you
and praise you in our Lord Jesus' holy name. Amen. Amen. There is a name I love to hear,
I love to sing its word. It sounds like music in my ear,
the sweetest name on earth. Oh, how I love Jesus. I'll see you Wednesday, God willing.
