The sermon "Speaking in Parables" by Mike McInnis explores the theological concept of divine revelation as articulated in the parables of Jesus, emphasizing the selective nature of God's disclosure to humanity. McInnis argues that the purpose of parables is to hide truths from those who are spiritually unprepared while revealing them to the humble and those willing to learn (Mark 4:10-12). He references Scripture, notably Romans 16:25-26 and Ephesians 3:4-5, to highlight that the mystery of God's plan, previously concealed, is disclosed through the gospel and specifically through the person of Jesus Christ. The practical significance of this message underscores the Reformed understanding of total depravity and the necessity of grace for any understanding of spiritual truths, reminding believers that insight into the mysteries of faith is a gift from God, not a result of human wisdom or effort.

Key Quotes

“The Lord's purpose in the creation of the world and His unfolding of that purpose was hidden from the men of this world until such time as it pleased Him to reveal it.”

“We look nowhere else to find the unfolding of this mystery except in the preaching of Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”

“Christ is that mystery within a mystery, because he cannot be known apart from the grace of God applied, as I say, unto blind eyes.”

“He commandeth his sheep to come unto him. Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

What does the Bible say about parables?

The Bible teaches that parables reveal the mystery of God's kingdom to believers while hiding it from the wise.

In the Bible, particularly in the Gospels, Jesus spoke in parables for a specific purpose. As stated in Mark 4:11-12, the Lord revealed to His disciples that it was given to them to understand the mysteries of the kingdom of God, whereas to those outside, the truths were communicated veiled in parables. This intentional obscurity serves to discern the curious from the truly seeking, underscoring that divine understanding is granted by God’s sovereign will.

Mark 4:11-12, Matthew 11:25

Why is the revelation of Christ important for Christians?

The revelation of Christ is crucial as it unveils God's plan of salvation and establishes Christ as the center of divine prophecy.

The revelation of Christ is fundamental to Christian faith because it unveils the mystery of God’s plan for redemption. As stated in Romans 16:25-26, this mystery was kept secret since the world began but is now revealed to bring obedience of faith among all nations. Understanding Christ as the fulfillment of prophecy (Revelation 19:10) helps believers see the unity of Scripture and God’s sovereign grace in salvation, reminding us that it is through Christ that we are called into fellowship with God.

Romans 16:25-26, Revelation 19:10

How do we know the mystery of God is true?

The mystery of God is affirmed through the Scriptures, which reveal Christ as the culmination of God’s redemptive plan.

We know the mystery of God is true because it is consistently illustrated throughout the Scriptures. Ephesians 3:3-5 highlights that the mystery was made known to the apostles by the Spirit, demonstrating that knowledge of this divine plan is rooted in revelation rather than human understanding. The consistent testimony of Scripture, from Genesis to Revelation, culminates in the person and work of Jesus Christ, confirming that this mystery is not only true but essential to our faith. This truth assures believers of God's eternal purpose and grace.

Ephesians 3:3-5, Romans 16:25-26

What role does grace play in understanding the mysteries of God?

Grace is essential for understanding God's mysteries, as they are revealed by the Holy Spirit to those whom God chooses.

Grace plays a pivotal role in understanding the mysteries of God because it is through divine grace that the blind eyes of the heart are opened to see and comprehend spiritual truths. As highlighted in Matthew 11:25, God reveals His truths to the humble and lowly, while hiding them from the wise. This underscores the necessity of God’s grace in removing the obstinacy of the heart, allowing believers to grasp the fullness of the gospel and the fellowship of the mystery revealed in Christ. It emphasizes that understanding is not achieved by human effort but by divine intervention.

Matthew 11:25, Ephesians 1:17-18

Welcome, friends, to another
broadcast of Morsels for Zion's Poor. The Lord declared His purpose
in speaking in parables. And when He was alone, they that
were about Him with the twelve asked of Him the parable. And
He said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery
of the kingdom of God. But unto them that are without,
all these things are done in parables, that seeing they may
see and not perceive, and hearing they may hear and not understand,
lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins
should be forgiven them. He alluded to this same purpose
when he declared, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and
earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and
prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father,
for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered
unto me of my father, and no man knoweth the son but the father.
Neither knoweth any man the father save the son, and he to whomsoever
the son will reveal him. The Lord's purpose in the creation
of the world and His unfolding of that purpose was hidden from
the men of this world until such time as it pleased Him to reveal
it. Now to Him that is of power to establish you according to
my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the
revelation of the mystery which was kept secret since the world
began, but now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the
prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made
known to all nations for the obedience of faith. The Lord
gave Paul a clear knowledge of the completion of that mystery
and the manner in which he would manifest it in the earth. How
that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery, as I wrote
before in few words, whereby when you read you may understand
my knowledge in the mystery of Christ. which in other ages was
not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed
unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit, that the Gentiles
should be fellow heirs, and of the same body, and partakers
of his promise in Christ by the gospel, and to make all men see
what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning
of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by
Jesus Christ. to the intent that now unto the
principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known
by the church the manifold wisdom of God. We look nowhere else
to find the unfolding of this mystery except in the preaching
of Jesus Christ and Him crucified. This is the unfolding of that
mystery. The religious prophets of the world will search the
book of Revelation to find many mysteries and secrets, but they
cannot see that this book is the revelation of Jesus Christ. Christ is the fulfillment of
all prophecy, for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
He is that rider on the white horse who is faithful and true.
He is that one who has prevailed to open the book which was written
within and on the backside. And one of the elders saith unto
me, weep not. Behold, the lion of the tribe
of Judah, the root of David, hath prevailed to open the book
and to loose the seven seals thereof. He is that one whom
John saw high and lifted up, and occupying the grandest place
of honor. Thou art worthy to take the book
and to open the seals thereof, for thou was slain, and hast
redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred and tongue
and people and nation, and hast made us unto our God kings and
priests, and we shall reign on the earth. And I beheld and I
heard the voice of many angels round about the throne, and the
beasts and the elders, and the number of them was 10,000 times
10,000, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, worthy
is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and
wisdom and strength and honor and glory and blessing. And every
creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth
and such as are in the sea and all that are in them heard I
saying, blessing and honor and glory and power be unto him that
sitteth upon the throne and unto the Lamb forever and ever. And
the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and 20 elders fell
down and worshiped him that liveth. forever and ever. Christ is that
mystery within a mystery, because he cannot be known apart from
the grace of God applied, as I say, unto blind eyes. All things
are delivered unto me of my Father, and no man knoweth the Son, but
the Father. Neither knoweth any man the Father,
save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. He commandeth
his sheep to come unto him. Come unto me, all you that labor
and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon
you and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and
ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and
my burden is light. Do you hear him today? For a
