few passages in the Bible are
more solemn or more heart-searching than Matthew 25, verses 31 through
46. As we read this passage together,
pray that God the Holy Spirit will graciously and effectually
apply it to your heart and to mine. I want us to read the whole
passage together, and then I will show you what our Lord teaches
us in this passage. beginning at verse 31. When the Son of Man shall come
in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he
sit upon the throne of his glory. And before him shall be gathered
all nations, and he shall separate them one from another, as the
shepherd divided his sheep from the And he shall set the sheep
on his right hand, but the goats on the left. Then shall the king
say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my father,
inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of
the world. For I was an hungred, and you
gave me meat. I was thirsty, and you gave me
drink. I was a stranger, and you took
me in. naked, and you clothed me, I
was sick, and you visited me, I was in prison, and you came
unto me. Then shall the righteous answer
him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee, and hungered, and fed thee,
or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger,
and took thee in, or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we
thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? And the king
shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, inasmuch
as you have done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren,
ye have done it unto me. Then shall he say also unto them
on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting
fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was unhungered,
and ye gave me no meat. I was thirsty, and you gave me
no drink. I was a stranger, and you took
me not in, naked, and you clothed me not, sick and in prison, and
you visited me not. Then shall they also answer him,
saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or a thirst, or a
stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister
unto thee? Then shall he answer them, saying,
barely I say unto you, inasmuch as you did it not to one of the
least of these, you did it not to me. And these shall go away
into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal
life." This passage begins with the
fact of our Lord's glorious second Verse 31 tells us three things
about our Master. First, His coming, and then His
companions, and then it tells us about His character. His coming,
when the Son of Man shall come in His glory, is stated here
not as something that is somehow looked upon as being a matter
for speculation or a matter for discussion, but rather our Lord
states the fact of His coming as it is something that is just
commonly received, commonly known, commonly understood by his disciples. By now he has established the
fact that he is coming again the second time without sin to
salvation so thoroughly and so completely that he simply says,
when the Son of Man shall come in his glory. So that those who
truly believe Christ, those who are born of God and taught of
his Spirit, and all who are born of God are taught of his Spirit.
They look upon the Lord's second advent with the same measure
of confidence, with the same measure of assurance, with the
same measure of peace as they do his first advent, for we understand
both of them from the teachings of Holy Scripture. We know that
Christ is coming again for the same reason that we understood
that he has come. We know that he's coming in glory
for the same reason that we know that he came in humiliation,
because it's revealed in Holy Scripture. It has been sealed
to our hearts by the power of God's Spirit. He is coming in
all the splendor, grandeur, majesty, and glory of the God-man. Not
only is he coming, but the Son of Man shall come in his glory. This is no secret rapture. This is not the son of man coming
to steal away his church secretly in the middle of the night. Oh,
no, no, no. The Scriptures never talk like
that. Jesus Christ is coming again, and when he comes, every
eye shall see him. He's coming in his glory. His
glory as the God-man, our Savior, having accomplished redemption
for us. And then he describes his companions. When Christ comes
again, we are told that he will not come alone, but all the holy
angels with him. Elsewhere, we're told that he
will come with 10,000 of his saints. That is, with all his
saints, they will be gathered with him and coming to him in
his glory. This will be the second advent
of our Savior when he comes from heaven. Those who are with him
now, those who have already been received up into glory, they
shall come with him. And the saints who are alive,
they shall be caught up together with the clouds to meet the Lord
in the air, and we shall come with him in his triumphal entry
into this world. The Lord Jesus is coming with
all his holy angels, and he's coming with the regal glory of
all his redeemed ones. when he comes the second time.
And then he describes his character. Our Lord says, then shall he
sit upon the throne of his glory. I like the way he speaks of himself
here. No arrogance, but absolute confidence. No haughtiness, but absolute
certainty. He who is about to leave the
world in utmost degradation and humiliation, being crucified
by the hands of wicked men, as though he were the vilest of
all men, he says, I'm coming again. The Son of Man shall come,
and when he comes, he will sit upon the throne of his glory. He describes himself then in
his sovereignty, and when he comes, there will be no debate
about his sovereignty. I told the man in the back, I
got a couple of letters today, some fellows taking me to task
over this issue of God's sovereignty. There won't be any taking the
task over it then. When he comes, he will sit upon the throne of
his glory, and everybody will understand that the judgment
seat is his throne, the throne of his glory, so that before
him every knee shall bow, every tongue shall confess of things
in heaven, and of things in the earth, and of things under the
earth, that he who is Jesus the Nazarite is himself the Christ
of God, Lord of glory. He rules everything by divine
right. The Lord God shall make the earth
to be the footstool of the throne of his glory in that day. And
then in verses 32 and 33, we're once more reminded of the fact
that all the human race is divided into only two families, two groups,
two categories, two races, if you will. The one called the
sheep, the other called the goats. Now you'll never understand the
Bible You will never understand the workings of God. You will
never understand divine providence. You will never understand grace
until you understand this fact. Earthly distinctions of race,
nationality, social status, mental aptitude, and even religious
affiliation are of absolutely no signification before God,
but only his elect. That's all. Only this distinction,
the sheep, his sheep. That's all that matters to him.
It doesn't matter before God whether you're rich or poor.
It doesn't matter before God whether you're looked upon as
being a bright and shining star in society, or looked upon as
the folks in society which society will have nothing to do with.
It doesn't matter in spite of God whether you're a great success
or whether you looked upon it being a man who never accomplished
anything, never did anything. In the sight of God, it doesn't
matter whether you're black, white, bond-free, rich, poor,
learned or unlearned. Those things are irrelevant.
The only thing that matters is are you one of his sheep, or
are you not? Are you in Christ, or are you
not? You see, we are all either sheep
or goats. There is no such thing as any
other distinction of any significance. And sheep have always been sheep. Goats have always been goats. Sheep will never get to be goats,
and goats will never get to be sheep. Sheep, some of them are
lost, some of them are saved, some of them maybe are not even
born yet, but all the sheep are his sheep nonetheless. Let me
show you the scriptures. And everything that God does,
he does for his sheep. Here in John chapter 10. Let's
look at just one passage in this regard. John chapter 10. Everything
God does, he does for his sheep. And his sheep have been his sheep
forever. All the sheep shall be slain.
None of the goats will. I know folks say, well, you oughtn't
to talk like that. That's all right. Our Lord did.
I guess it'd be all right for me to. Listen to what he says.
John chapter 10 and verse 11. I am the good shepherd. The good
shepherd giveth his life for the sheep and the goats. That's
not what it says, is it? The good shepherd giveth his
life for the sheep. Verse 14, I am the good shepherd and know
my sheep and am known of mine. He doesn't say, I know my sheep
and know the goats, does he? He says, I know my sheep. Now
he knows all about the goats because he's the omniscient Lord
God. He's talking now about another kind of knowledge. He's talking
about an intimate special acquaintance. He's talking about knowing his
sheep so as to approve of them, knowing his sheep so as to love
them, knowing his sheep so as to delight in them, knowing his
sheep so as to know them everlastingly. He says, I know my sheep. I know who they are, where they
are, what I'm going to do with them. Look at verse 15. As the
Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father. And I lay down
my life for the sheep. Do you see that? I lay down my
life for the sheep. And other sheep I have. There's
mothers like you. Other sheep I have, not other
sheep I'm going to get. That's not what it says. Other
sheep I have. Them also I must bring. And there
shall be one fold and one shepherd, because the sheep must be saved.
They're one of them. Not one of them should be lost.
They're the sheep. Down in verse 27, Isaiah said, my sheep, my
sheep hear my voice. They don't become my sheep because
they hear my voice. He said, they're my sheep and
they hear my voice because they're my sheep. Do you see it? Read
on. And I know them. And they follow
me. Who does? My sheep do. Verse
28, and I give unto them. Who? My sheep. I give unto them
eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any
man pluck them out of my hand. Now look at verse 26. The Pharisees
started squawking. We don't like that. We don't
like that kind of preaching. I hear it all the time. And this
is what the Savior says. But you believe not, because
you are not of my sheep. As I said unto you, my sheep
hear my voice. If you were my sheep, you'd hear
my voice. If you were my sheep, you'd follow me. If you were
my sheep, I'd give you eternal life. But you believe not, because
you're not of my sheep. God chose his sheep. Christ died
and redeemed his sheep. He seeks, finds, and fetches
his sheep home. The Holy Spirit calls his sheep. And when Christ comes again,
the sheep shall be set by him on his right hand in his throne,
as he had been set upon the Father's right hand in his throne, the
throne of his glory. And the goats shall forever envy
the sheep, for they shall be set upon his left hand. The sheep
upon the right hand of honor, the goats upon the left hand
of dishonor. The sheep upon the right hand
of majesty, the goats upon the left hand of shame. The sheep
upon the right hand of his honorable glory and his salvation, the
goats upon the left hand of his condemnation and his everlasting
destruction. My sheep, hear my voice, he says. And then in verses 35 through
46, Our Lord Jesus describes the
day of judgment in several of its leading circumstances. Now
let no one be deceived. There is a day appointed by God
when you and I will meet Jesus Christ in judgment. A day fixed
from eternity. A day of reckoning when we will
be judged of Him. You can put it out of your mind
if you dare. You can try to dismiss it from your thoughts if you
like. You can pretend you don't hear what I'm saying if that's
what you want to do. But I'm telling you that there
is a day coming when you must give account to God. I am here
to remind you that God Almighty will stand you before his bar,
before the throne of his glory in a day of reckoning. And you
must meet him face to face. So must I. And therefore I make
no apology for echoing the word of scripture to you. The scripture
says, after this, that is after this life is over, after we have
finished our little space of existence, our little appointed
time in this world, after this, the judgment. So prepare to meet
your God. You must soon meet God in judgment.
How will it go for you then? It won't matter what church you're
a member of, or whether you're a member of one. It won't matter. It won't matter what denomination
you're affiliated with, or whether you're affiliated. It won't matter.
It won't matter whether you're a son of a preacher, or the daughter
of a deacon, or your mama and daddy were fine religious folks,
or whether they weren't. Those things will be irrelevant.
How will it go for you when you meet God in church? How will
it go? It won't matter whether you've
listened to this man preach all your life and heard the gospel
and said amen to everything you've heard. That will be irrelevant.
How will it go for you in the day of judgment? So first of
all, what is relevant? Listen and you'll hear. First,
our Lord teaches us and assures us that he will himself be the
judge in that great day. Now understand this. Everything
God does Everything God does, he does through his Son. Everything. That the Son may have preeminence,
that the Son may have the honor, that the Son may be exalted,
that the Son may be glorified. God doesn't do anything for men
or with men apart from his Son. That's the only way God deals
with human beings, is in His Son. The Father has committed
all judgment to the Son. God is appointed a day when He
will judge the world by that man whom He has ordained, the
Lord Jesus Christ. We must all appear before the
judgment seat of Christ to give account of the things done in
the flesh. The scripture says God has highly exalted Him, given
Him a name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus
every knee should bow. of things in heaven, things in
the earth, and things under the earth, and every tongue confess
that he, the Son of God, is Lord to the glory of God the Father.
That same Jesus, who was born at Bethlehem, who was raised
up in Nazareth, who preached and performed miracles of mercy
all the days of his humiliation, who was despised and rejected
of men, and who was at last betrayed, beaten, scourged, stripped naked,
and nailed to a crushed tree by the hands of wicked men who
looked upon him as a wicked man, that same Jesus shall come again
in glory to judge the world." Bobby Estes and his wife will
stand before And Don Faulkner and his wife will stand before
him. And you're going to stand before him. In judgment. In judgment. Now, believers have
every reason to look upon this august, solemn event with comfort
and joy. I don't want ever to preach the
Day of Judgment so as to wring terror in the hearts of believers,
only hypocrites. Believers have every reason,
every reason to look upon this day with as much joy and confidence,
with greater joy and confidence than any day ever to come to
pass in time or eternity. For you see, he who shall sit
upon the throne in that great and dreadful day is himself Jesus
Christ our Savior. He is our advocate, our great
high priest. our elder brother, our friend,
our companion, our husband. Now, I do not mean to suggest
by that for a second that he will somehow bend the law, or
he will somehow bend justice in order to get us into the kingdom.
I recognize that every one of us would, if we were sitting
upon the bench And we had no one to answer to. If we didn't
have to answer to the political system or didn't have to answer
to the law ourselves, if we were sitting on the bench and one
of our sons or daughters came before us, we would bend the
law. We'd do whatever we had to to
see to it that our sons or daughters escape the severity of their
crimes. We'd do that because we're everyone
unjust. We're everyone unjust. They're
not one of us who's not. They're not one of us who's not.
We may pretend otherwise. But the only reason men would
not do so is because they have to face the consequences of their
actions. But our Lord Jesus will not bend the law for you. Love
you? Yes. Bend the law for you? No.
Love you as you've never been loved? Indeed he does. Bend his
law for you? No sir, he's just. He's just. And to bend the law is to promote
chaos and anarchy and utter rebellion. He will not bend his law. But
he will upon the grounds of absolute justice plead your case and bring
you at last into glory. Indeed he will because of his
justice. Because of his righteousness,
because of his holiness, because he has fulfilled the law, because
he has satisfied the law, as your advocate and priest, he
will plead your cause before his own bar. Oh, now that's reason
for joy. He who died for me will answer
the law for me when he calls my name in judgment. He who lived
for me will answer the law for me when he demands righteousness
of me. But, understand this too, if
you're without Christ, if you're yet an unbeliever,
if your religion is just mouth religion, if you're yet unconverted,
if in your heart you yet live in rebellion against the great
God, every thought Or every thought of this day ought to fill you
with terror. If God ever makes you aware,
if God ever makes you aware of the reality and certainty of
his strict justice, until you find refuge in Jesus Christ,
you will think you're going absolutely crazy because of your terror. I know I've been there. I've
been there. Your judge in that day will be
the very Christ whose gospel you've despised, whose gracious
invitations you've scorned, whose blood you've trampled beneath
your feet. If you go on and live and die
in your rebellion and unbelief, how great will be the wrath poured
out upon you in that day. To be condemned by anyone would
be terrible. and hold my soul to be condemned
by Him who is the Savior of the world, to be condemned by Him
who is able, willing and ready right now to save any sinner
who calls on His name, to be condemned by Him, that's unthinkable. I urge you then, in the words
of the psalmist, kiss the Son, lest He be angry and you perish
from the way. Secondly, our master tells us
that everyone, everyone will be judged by him in that day. Look at verse 32. Before him
shall be gathered all nations, all nations. Now, if you happen to have one
of those Bibles in your lap or at home that has notes in it,
and tells you this is talking about the judgment of nations
rather than individuals, have enough sense to laugh. Nations
are not made up of buildings. Nations are made up of people.
And the judgment of these nations is the judgment of all people
in all nations of all nationalities of all time. He's talking about
your judgment and mine. Before him shall be gathered
all nations. That is, all who ever live shall
in that day give account of themselves before the Son of God. When the
King of heaven issues his summons, his holy angels, like great hosts
of deputies, will make certain that everyone hears his voice
and is gathered before him and is seated at the bar of judgment. Each one will be forced to step
up forward by himself to receive the judgment. exactly as it's
given, and to acknowledge that the sentence is just. J.C. Ryle wrote, those who would not
come to worship Christ on earth will find that they must come
to his greatest eyes when he returns to judge the world. And
in that day, in that great day, all the human race shall be publicly
divided into two groups. In that day, everybody, everybody
will be Over here, numbered with his sheep. Over here, numbered with the
goats. His sheep, the goats. The very language of our translation
seems to suggest that somehow there is this special, blessed,
blessed acknowledgment. He says, when the sort of man
comes, his sheep, his sheep shall be set on his right side. And
the goats. Oh yes, the goats. We got to
deal with the goats. They'll be on his left. And that day, Earthly distinctions
will be meaningless. Former things will be passed
away. I couldn't help but think as
I read this moment ago about Mr. Simpson, be he guilty or
innocent, beside the point for now. You've got your opinion
concerning that aspect, but that's beside the point. I guarantee
you that man wishes today he hadn't been so famous a few years
ago. I guarantee you he wishes the whole world didn't know his
name now. And I'm telling you, the day will come when all earthly
distinctions will be utterly meaningless. One of the old writers, I think it was Samuel Rutherford,
I'm not sure, I read it years He said, value nothing now more
highly than you will value it when you stand before God. Oh, what a wise word. Rex, we keep seeking and grabbing,
seeking and grabbing, seeking and grabbing. Stuff that you
can't hold on to. You can't hold this world. You
can't hold this world. Seek Christ, those things that
are God. After all these things, you Gentiles
seek. Don't be so foolish. Don't be
so foolish. In that day, rich and poor, learned
and unlearned, black and white, Religious and irreligious men
and women, moralists and rogues, will all be lumped into one of
two groups. Sheep or goats. One of the two. Nothing else
will matter. Nothing else will matter to you,
and nothing else will matter to God. Are you or are you not in Christ?
Grace or no grace. Faith or no faith. Converted
or unconverted. Saved or lost. Those are the
only things that will matter then and those are the only things
that really matter now. Are you in Christ or without
Christ? If you believe on the Son of
God. If right now you trust Jesus Christ alone as Savior and Lord,
you're His sheep. You've always been His sheep.
You'll always be His sheep. If you're without Christ, and
you die without Christ, in that day you'll be numbered among
the goats, and we'll see what shall happen to the sheep and
the goats. Thirdly, our Lord here shows us that the judgment
of that great day will be totally righteous, just, and equitable. Now I want you to follow me here,
listen carefully. No one will challenge the proceedings of
that day. When the judgment is over, even the damned will acknowledge
that the judgment was right. The judgment will be conducted
upon the basis of proper evidence. Now Jan, give me your attention. Don't lose me now. We recognize
that we are justified by grace through the redemption that's
in Christ Jesus. That which he accomplished at
Calvary. Our only righteousness before God is his righteousness
that has been impeded to us by divine grace. We recognize that
we have no acceptance with God, we have no basis of being brought
before God acceptably, we cannot come to God, and we cannot be
received by God upon any other grounds. And when God opens the
record books in that day, he will bring us into heaven Because
we have no sin recorded against us in the record books of heaven.
That's what Jeremiah 50 20 and Revelation chapter 20 verses
11 and 12 teach us. The Lord hath not beheld iniquity in Jacob,
nor perverseness in Israel. We have now and shall never have
anything laid to our charge that shall bring us into condemnation.
We are accepted of God because of Christ's complete satisfaction
of divine justice and his perfect righteousness that has been imputed
to us. However, having said that, I
want you to understand this. God will in the day of judgment
demonstrate that grace made his elect to be truly new creatures
in Christ. Their works which do follow them
into heaven shall be witnesses brought forward by God himself
as to why they should be admitted into his heavenly kingdom." Did
you read that? Our Lord did not say, You dressed right, and you paid
your tithes, and you read your Bible every day, and you went
to church three times a week. So come on in. That's not what
he said, Lindsay. He did not say you've been good
to your children, and good to your wife, or good to your husband.
He didn't say that. All things important, but that's
not what he says. He does not say you pray regularly like you
ought to. He does not say, you did all
those things that religious folks put down in their code books
of religion and say this is godliness or that's ungodliness. He doesn't
even talk about that. Doesn't mention that. Because
those things are totally irrelevant to godliness unless this is it. Charity, kindness, hospitality,
grace. I was hungry and you fed me. I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick and in prison and
you visited me. I was thirsty and you gave me
water to drink. Our faith, you see, is proven
to be either true or false by our lives. It's proven to be
so now, And it will be demonstrated to be so in judgment. Faith without
works is dead. That's what James says. But the
works he's talking about is visiting the fatherless and the widows
in their affliction. The works he's talking about are works
of charity and kindness. If any man has not love, he has
not God. He that loveth not, knoweth not
God. And when our Lord's talking about
love, he's not talking about my own hell. That's not what
he's talking about. When he talks about loving folks,
he's talking about doing them good. When he talks about loving
folks, he's talking about committing yourself to their benefit and
to their welfare. He's not talking about just ignoring
them and saying, well, I didn't do anybody any harm. That's man's
thoughts of love. His thoughts of love are sacrifice
and devotion and giving and doing. The Day of Judgment will bring
great, eternal joy to every believer. Look at verse 34. The Lord will
say to those on his right hand, Come ye blessed of my Father,
blessed now, blessed from everlasting, blessed to everlasting. Inherit
the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
And note what it says. He speaks to All voters on his
right hand. I see there Chuck Darby. And I see there, I think I can say what's in confidence,
Don Horton. Yeah. And I see there Charles
Spurgeon. I see there John Budden. And
I see there Brother Watts. And I see there Father Abraham.
See him off. And he says to every one of them,
to every one of them, come you blessed. Blessed by the same God, with
the same blessing, with the same grace. Inherit the kingdom. Not part of it. The kingdom. The whole thing. The whole thing
prepared exactly for every one of you before the world began. Do you see that? So that the lowest and the least,
the poorest and the weakest, and the youngest of God's saints
is given the same reward as the greatest and the richest, the
highest, the strongest, and the oldest, we shall receive a crown
of glory from the King of Glory. And the Day of Judgment will
bring utter confusion to all unbelievers. Verse 41, Then shall
he say also to them on the left hand, Depart from me ye cursed,
forever cursed, into everlasting fire. prepared for the devil and his
angels, prepared for the devil and his
messengers, the devil and his servants, prepared for you, prepared
for you. You who will not heed the Savior's
call now, come unto You cannot resist his calling.
Depart from me, you curse. And Judgment Day will demonstrate
the character of all the elect and the character of all the
reprobate in a most striking manner. You see, same folks,
Christ's sheep, will in that day be clothed with humility
just as they are today. Christ's sheep are. Not with
the kind of humility that men call humility. You can just,
you can mark this down, huh? This is extra lumber, get it
free. Anything that a man, natural
man, anything that men and women outside Christ, anything the
world, the political world, the educational world, the philosophical
world, the business world, anything the world looks at and says,
now that's good. You can bank on it, that's bad. Anything they
say is humility, you can bank on it, that's pride. Anything
that men look at and say, there now, I can see that, that's godliness,
you can bank on it, that's ungodliness. But those who are born of God,
they are clothed truly with humility. And this is how it's seen. They
never imagine, they never imagine that they have done anything
worthy of God's approval. of God's acceptance. Our Lord said, come on, this
is what you did. And this is their response. Verse
38, verse 39, seven, rather, Then shall the righteous answer
him, saying, Lord, when? When did I do that? Where? When saw we thee and hungered
and fed thee a thirsty, and gave thee drink. When saw we thee
a stranger, and took thee in, a naked and clothed thee. When
saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee." But the lost, the unbelieving,
will still be just as blind, just as proud, just as self-righteous
in that day as they are today. The Lord says, you didn't do
this, that, And verse 44, Then shall they answer him, saying,
Lord, when did you weep? I did that. Didn't you see me? Weren't you there that day I
saw that bum on the street and I felt sorry for him and gave
him a dollar? You see, the self-righteous never cease to be self-righteous
even when they're damned. Ever. And that great day our Lord will
make all men to see this thing as well, how highly, oh, how
highly he regards his people. He considers anything done for
them, anything, any word spoken for them, any
cup of cold water given to them, any task performed for them,
any kindness done on their behalf, he considers anything done for
his children as being done for him. Next time this preacher
or another or anybody else asks you, would you do this for Ron, Don't hear Ron's name. Don't
hear Ron's name. Would you do this for the Savior?
That's another story. It ought not be. Lindsay, it
ought not be. Something's wrong with us if
it is. He considers it the same thing. What was that you said
about Rex? Don't forget you're talking about
the Son of God. Don't forget. But what was that
you said about your sister? Don't forget now, anything said
for or against his disciples, he considers to be said for or
against him. Anything. Say, well, the Lord understands.
You can bank on that. You can bank on that. He does
understand. And this last thing, the Son
of God here tells us what the results of that final judgment
will be. They will be final, everlasting,
unchanging, immutable. Verse 46, thee shall go away
into everlasting punishment. For all who can describe the
misery of the damned, it shall be eternal. It's called eternal death. You who are lost shall be required
