In his sermon titled "You Shall Know," Todd Nibert addresses the profound theological theme of believer's union with Christ as demonstrated in John 14:20-21. He argues that this union is crucial for understanding one's identity in relation to God, emphasizing that every believer shares this knowledge of being "in Christ," "in the Father," and having Christ dwell in them through the Holy Spirit. Key scriptural references include John 14:20-21 and Romans 8:28, which affirm the assurance and intimate relationship believers have with the Triune God. Nibert articulates that this union has vital implications for both the believer's assurance of salvation and the manifestation of God's love, marking it as essential for true faith in Christ and an object of divine revelation that ultimately glorifies God.

Key Quotes

“You shall know that I am in the Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. You shall know.”

“If you don't believe, if I do not believe, it's because we're not of God. He that is of God hears God's words.”

“As He is, so are we in this world. ... Herein shall we have boldness on the day of judgment.”

“I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.”

What does the Bible say about union with Christ?

Union with Christ is the essential doctrine that believers are spiritually united with Jesus, sharing in His life and blessings.

Union with Christ is a profound biblical doctrine asserting that every believer is spiritually united with Jesus Christ, sharing in His life, death, and resurrection. This union means that what is true of Christ is also true for believers; His righteousness is imputed to them, and their sins were imputed to Him. In passages like John 14:20, we see that believers are told that they are 'in Christ' and that Christ is 'in them,' emphasizing this intimate relationship.

John 14:20, 1 Corinthians 1:30, 2 Corinthians 5:21

How do we know we are in Christ?

We know we are in Christ because of the revelation given to us by the Holy Spirit and our belief in the Gospel.

The assurance of being in Christ comes through the revelation by the Holy Spirit and the faith imparted to believers. John 10:26-27 indicates that Christ's sheep hear His voice, implying that true believers recognize and respond to His call. When one believes in Christ and sees Him as their righteousness, that belief is a testament to their union with Him. Additionally, the presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer further affirms this relationship, as seen in John 14:20.

John 14:20, John 10:26-27, Romans 8:16

Why is the concept of Christ in us important for Christians?

The concept of Christ in us emphasizes the spiritual life and hope believers have, as their salvation is rooted in His life within them.

The significance of Christ in us cannot be overstated in the Christian faith. This doctrine highlights that believers do not merely follow a set of rules or a moral code; rather, they possess the life of Christ within them (Galatians 2:20). This union means that Christ's righteousness is our righteousness and that His life sustains us spiritually. In Colossians 1:27, Paul speaks of 'Christ in you, the hope of glory,' indicating that our hope for eternal life and sanctification is rooted entirely in Christ's indwelling presence.

Galatians 2:20, Colossians 1:27, John 14:20

How do we understand the relationship between believers and the law?

Believers understand the law as spiritual, recognizing Christ fulfilled its requirements on their behalf.

The relationship between believers and the law is complex, as believers recognize the law's spiritual nature. In Romans 7:14, Paul states, 'We know that the law is spiritual; but I am carnal, sold under sin.' This acknowledgment indicates that while the law reveals God's holiness, it also highlights believers' inability to fulfill it by their own strength. However, through union with Christ, believers see that He has fulfilled the law perfectly on their behalf, thus freeing them from its condemnation and enabling them to live according to the Spirit (Romans 8:1-4).

She had a mild stroke and she's doing better now, but everybody remember her. Would you turn back to John chapter 14? I've entitled this message, You Shall Know.

Verse 20, at that day you shall know. Know what? That I am in my father and you are in me and I in you. There are things that we could not possibly know if he does not make them known to us. And none are more obvious than this on that day.

Now, what day is he speaking of? Verse 16 of the same chapter. And I will pray the father that he shall give you another comforter. Speaking of God, the Holy Spirit, that he may abide with you forever. Even the spirit of truth. Whom the world cannot perceive because it seeth him not. Neither knows him, but you know him. For he dwelleth with you and shall be in you. I'll not leave you comfortless, I'll come to you by His Spirit. Yet a little while and the world sees me no more, but you see me because I live, you shall live also at that day, the day when God the Holy Spirit comes.

Now, I can't understand or know anything Apart from God coming to me by his spirit. Now on that day, you shall know. And he gives a statement that has three prepositions in it. The preposition in, in that day, you shall know, and this is every believer. This is not some group that's up above the others. This is what every believer knows.

At that day, you shall know that I am in the Father. And you shall know that you are in me. And you shall know that I am in you. You shall know. There are so many verses of scripture that speak of the knowledge that the believer and only the believer has. I think of what Paul said in Romans 8, 28, and we know, this is not speculation, and we know that all things work together for good to them that love God. to them who he called according to his purpose. We know. Somebody says, I don't. Paul says, I do. And he speaks as a we, every believer knows. We know the character of God. We know what God says in his word. We know.

I think of what Paul said in Romans chapter seven, verse 14. We know that the law is spiritual. But I am carnal, fleshly, sold under sin. We know. If I don't know this, I'm not in this group that knows. All believers know this. I know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. When the Lord said, we speak what we know and testify what we've seen, who is included in the we? The Lord and every believer. We speak what we know. When you know, you know.

Now, what is it that we'll know in that great day? That I am in the Father and you are in me and I in you. That's mysterious, isn't it? It's glorious. It's high, but it's what every believer knows. It's what God has taught them. You'll know that I am in the Father. You'll know that you are in me. And you'll know that I am in you.

Now, how do we know this? Well, because he said it. We believe what he said. John chapter eight, verses 46 and 47, the Lord said, if I say the truth, Why do you not believe me? He that is of God, heareth God's words. You therefore hear them not because you're not of God. If you do not believe, if I do not believe, it's because we're not of God. He that is of God, Heareth God's words.

The Lord said in John 10, 26, you believe not because you're not of my sheep. As I said unto you, my sheep, the ones I laid down my life for, my sheep hear my voice. I know them. They follow me. Paul said, I know whom, not what. This is so important. Not what, I know whom I have believed. What you believe is determined by who you believe. You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.

Now, the first thing he says is you will know that I am in the Father. One with him. Turn to John chapter 10 for a moment. Verse 30. I and my father are one. One in purpose. One in essence. Jesus Christ is the son of God, equal with the father. He's in the father, whatever the father does, he does. I and my father are one. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, many good works have I showed you from my father. For which of those works do you stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, for good work we stone thee not, we're not against you healing people and feeding people, but for blasphemy, because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.

He is in God. He is one with God. He is equal with God. You'll know that I'm in the Father. Remember when he said to Philip, Philip have I been so long time with you, and yet have thou not known me? Now listen to this statement. He that hath seen me hath seen the Father. It's not as if you've seen the Father. If you've seen him, you've seen the Father. He is in The Father, Colossians chapter two, verse nine says, in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead. Every attribute of God. You know, the Bible gives us what God's been pleased to make known to us about himself. His sovereignty, his power, his justice, his love, his wisdom, All that God is is found in the Bible. He makes known his character. We can't really know the character of God. We can know he created the universe. You can get that by just looking at the creation. The invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power in Godhead, so that we're out without excuse. You can look at creation and know God is, but we can't know his character apart from this book. And we know from this book that Jesus Christ is God. God the Son. He is in the Father.

And you shall know that you're in me. Now, how do you know that? Revelation. You're going to know that the only way you can be saved is if you're in me. You're going to understand that. You're not going to completely grasp it, I realize that, but you're going to know that the only way you can be accepted by God is if you are in me. Our only standing before God is being accepted in the beloved. Of him are you in Christ Jesus. That's the only place I want to be. I don't want to be anywhere else. When God looks at me, all I want Him seeing is me in Jesus Christ. And not even me in Jesus Christ, I want it to where all He sees is Jesus Christ. I'm in Him. Of Him are you in Christ Jesus. According as He had chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world.

Now, you're gonna know that I'm in the Father, you're gonna know you're in me and you're gonna know that I am in you. Christ in you, the hope of glory. Now what does that mean? Christ in you, the hope of glory. Does that mean Christ's physical body is in us? Of course not. He's seated at the right hand of the Father. making intercession for us. Christ in you by His Spirit in the new birth. You understand, you know that if you believe it didn't come from you. It's Christ in you, the hope of glory. You'll know that. You'll know that all of your salvation as far as your experience goes, is Christ in you. You don't give yourself the credit. You don't give your works the credit. You don't give your free will the credit. You know that if you're saved, it's because Christ dwelleth in you. He gets all the glory. Paul said, I live, yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.

Now these are three things on that day when he makes himself known, you'll know. You'll know that He is in the Father. Whatsoever the Father doeth, the Son doeth. That's what He said. The words that I speak unto you are not mine, but the words of Him that sent me. You're gonna know He's in the Father. You know He's God. You know you're in Him. You know your only ground of acceptance is being found in Him. And you know that if you know that it's because he's in you and he's caused you by his spirit to believe on him.

Verse 20, John 14, if that day you shall know that I'm in my father and you in me and I in you. Now here's the evidence that that has taken place. He that hath my commandments and keepeth them. That's the evidence that you're in Him and He's in you. He that hath my commandments, the commandments of the gospel, and keepeth it. He it is that loveth me. And look at this. He that loveth me shall be loved of my Father.

Now I want you to think about that. If by the grace of God, You love the Lord Jesus Christ. You are the object of the eternal God's love. He loves you. Chew on that for a second. You know, most people think of this as a given. Well, sure, God loves me. He loves everybody. No, he doesn't. Bible never says that. He loves his people. He loves his son. He loves those in his son. Nothing shall separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

But not only does the Father love you, he says in verse 21, and I will love him and will manifest myself to him. Now, what could be better than that? To be loved by God. to be loved by his son and to have his son make himself known to you.

Now, what this is speaking of is a subject that for lack of a better word, I'm calling it a subject. It's more than a subject. The Lord's talking about union with himself. Something that we can't get our minds around, we just believe. Union with the Lord Jesus Christ. I'm in Him. He's in me. He is in God. Now, what a transcendent thought.

Now, the scripture speaks of the mysteries of the gospel. And I love the word mystery. Mystery is something we would have never known had not God made it known in His Word. It's not something we can figure out. It's not something through diligent study we can come up with this. It's something we would never have known had not God made it known in His Word, the mysteries of Scripture.

And you know, I think it's interesting. They're all great, there's no doubt about that. They're infinite, they're transcendent. But there's only two mysteries that God says are great. Number one, 1 Timothy 3.16, great is the mystery of godliness that God was manifest in the flesh. God became a man. That's who Jesus Christ is. God became a man. The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us. Great is this mystery. Jesus Christ, I love saying this, Jesus Christ is fully God, 100% God, just as if he were not man at all. and he's 100% man just as if he were not God at all. The God-man, what a mystery! The God-man! He's not a blend of God and a blend of man. He's not a blended being. He's not half God and half man. He's 100% God. He's 100% man. The God-man.

Now he's gotta be there to save somebody like me or you. You see, he has the ability of God, which is omnipotence. He's got to be God-man for him to make the way for God to be just and justify the ungodly. He's got to be who he is for me or you to be saved.

The second great mystery that the scripture speaks of, it speaks great as the mystery of godliness. God was manifest in the flesh, but the second Great mystery is found in Ephesians chapter five. Would you turn with me there? I'd like you to look at this with me. Verse 32. This is a great mystery. Ephesians chapter five, verse 32. This is the second great mystery.

Now, I realize they're all great, but these are the ones God calls great. So there's such significance in these two great mysteries. God was manifest in the flesh. This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

Now, what is he talking about? Verse 31. For this cause. Now, this is a quotation from Genesis chapter 2. Adam said this. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and shall be joined unto his wife, and they too," and he's speaking of the intimate relationship between a man and his wife, they too, shall be one flesh, symbolically one flesh, This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

I'm not just talking about marriage right now, Paul said. Matter of fact, that's not what I'm talking about at all. I'm talking about Christ and the church.

Now, when Lynn and I were married, she didn't become me. She's still Lynn. I didn't become her. I'm still me. That's the same with all of you. You're married. That doesn't mean you are that person. You're still you. He or she is still he or she. So what is this talking about? The two becoming one?

Well, Paul says, I'm talking about Christ in the church. That's what I'm talking about. Turn with me to Hebrews. Hold your finger there in Ephesians chapter five. I want you to look at this scripture with me. Ephesians 2, I mean Hebrews 2. Verse 11. For both, Hebrews 2.11, for both he that sanctifieth and they who are sanctified.

Who is he that sanctifyeth? The Lord Jesus Christ. Who are they that are sanctified? Every believer. He's the sanctifier, they are the sanctified. Both he that sanctifyeth and they who are sanctified are all of one. Doesn't say it's just as if they were one. It says they are one.

Now this speaks of the great mystery of Christ and his church. I am one with Jesus Christ. That's what the Bible teaches. I wouldn't dare say that. Wouldn't even think it unless the Bible said it. But here we have it. Every believer is one with Jesus Christ.

Now, go back to Ephesians 5 because I think we can learn something about what that means from this passage of scripture. Verse 25, husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it that he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word. Remember, he's the one who sanctifieth. And here he is sanctifying by what he does.

That he might present it to himself, a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that it should be holy and without blemish. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

Now, stop for a moment. If you love your wife, man, you're the one that benefits from it. You're loving yourself, really. You know, everything we do is a selfish act. If I love my wife, I'm gonna be the beneficiary of that she'll treat me better. Is that what this is talking about?

No. When Jesus Christ loved his wife, he was loving himself. because he is one with his wife. That's what it means to be one with Christ. You can't be separated. The two are one. Now like I said, Len's still Len, I'm still Todd, but in Christ, I'm one with him.

Now here's what happened. Second Corinthians 521, Says, for he hath made him to be sin for us who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Now here's what happened. My life became his life on Calvary's tree. He bore my sins, my wicked life. He bore my life in his own body on the tree. My life became his life. That's why he cried out, my God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? That's what I deserve. That's what I deserve, to be cut off. He was cut off. And his life, the perfect life of Jesus Christ, becomes my life, so that I have life before God. He made him sin, my life, who knew no sin, he never sinned, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. Union.

Now let me give you four or five things about this union that the believer has with the Lord Jesus Christ. He said, I am in my father, you're in me, I'm in you. You'll know that. Every believer will know that by the teaching of God, the Holy Spirit. They know that's the only hope of salvation they have.

This union between Christ and his church, first of all, is an eternal union. In Jeremiah chapter one, verse five, God says, before I formed thee in the belly. Before you were conceived, before you had any earthly existence, I knew thee. He didn't say, I know what you would be in the future. He said, I know you in eternity. According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, this union is an eternal union. It never began. It did not have a point when it began. You know when it says according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, the previous verse said that he hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

Now listen to this. He speaks not of what we will be, but who we are right then. We were there when this happened. Somebody says, explain that to me. I can't explain that. But yet that's the way the scripture speaks. We were there when it happened. He hath blessed us. Not he's going to bless us whenever we're conceived. He hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings and heavenly blessings in Christ Jesus. God is eternal, the objects of his Love his people are loved eternally. And we have never been seen independently of what Paul or John calls in Revelation 13, eight, the lamb slain from the foundation of the world. You see the reason God loves you eternally is because you're in Christ eternally. Christ was slain eternally in the purpose and mind and will of God and God's people have always been accepted in him. Eternity has no beginning point, no ending point. Every believer is eternally united to Christ. That's what this book teaches. We wouldn't believe it were it not in the Bible, but it's in the Bible.

This union that exists between Christ and the believer is a vital union. First, it's an eternal union. Next it's a vital union. Now that word vital means absolutely necessary, essential, and indispensable for the continuing of life. This is a vital union. The only way I'll be saved is if I am united to him. He's the head, we're the body, members of his body. And the church is called the fullness Of him that filleth all in all. If one member of the church was lost, his body would be incomplete. Think about that. The church is called his body. Members of his body. If I'm a believer, I'm a member of the body of Christ. If one member is lost, Christ is not complete. Now this speaks of the sacrilegious blasphemy of saying that Jesus Christ could die for someone and they wind up in hell anyway. That would mean he's incomplete. A member of his body would not be there. Such thinking is blasphemous. It's evil. There won't be anybody in hell that Christ died for. His body must be complete. This is vital for him. And once again, we wouldn't say this if the Bible didn't teach it.

But Christ would be in, I say this fearfully, I say this believingly. And I'm not just saying it about me, I'm saying this about every believer. If I'm not in heaven, Christ's body would be incomplete. Everybody he died for must be saved. And I'll tell you what, if I'm not in him, I won't be saved. It's vital for me to be saved. It's vital for him to have the fullness of his body because this is God's purpose. And it's vital for me to be saved to be in him because I won't be saved if I'm not in him.

The union that exists between Christ and His church is eternal, it's vital, and it's the union of life. We are united to Him in His life. His life is our life before God. There is only one life that God accepts. Do you hear that? He doesn't accept your life. He accepts the life of His Son. And if you're in Him, His life is your life. The Lord said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. The life of Jesus Christ is my life before God. That's why I have confidence with regard to the Day of Judgment. I don't have any confidence in my preaching, or my understanding, or my doctrinal knowledge, or my efforts against sin, or anything about me if my thumbprints are on it, it's no good. My confidence is that His life, His perfect, glorious life is my life before God.

Paul said, when Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall we appear with Him in glory. My life is not like His life. My life is His life. This is the union of life. When we're born of the Spirit of God, it's Christ in you. The life of God in the soul, Paul, Peter called it partakers of the divine nature. You know, just the way Christ has two natures, the divine nature and perfect human nature, two separate natures, not a blend of the two, not a mixing of the two. Two natures in one person. the Lord Jesus Christ. Every believer has two natures in one person. The nature they were born with, the sinful nature, fallen humanity, but they've also got the nature given to them in the new birth, the new nature. It's not a blend of the two. It's two separate men coming through one personality. That's where the confusion comes from. We still got this one personality, but it's two men in one body. Paul called it the old man and the new man.

Now this is Christ in you. The hope of glory. This is the union of life. I love what John said in 1 John 4, 17, as he is, so are we in this world. Now that summarizes this scriptural teaching of union with Christ. If I'm united to him as he is, oh, there's so much we could say about as he is, isn't there? As he is, so are we in this union. world. John said, herein shall we have boldness on the day of judgment. Now I want you to think about standing before God in judgment. Boldness! As He is, so are we in boldness. Boldness on the day of judgment. 1 John chapter 4 verse 17.

Now, in closing, what is the evidence of this Glorious fact, turn back to John chapter 14. At that day, the day God the Holy Spirit reveals the gospel to you and gives you life, at that day you shall know, every believer without exception, you shall know that I am in my Father and you in me, and I in you.

Now somebody says, how can I know that? Well, verse 21, here's the evidence. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them. He it is that loveth me. And he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.

Now what's he talking about, he that hath my commandments? Is he talking about the Ten Commandments? Let me say two things about the Ten Commandments.

Number one, and I'm saying this about you as well, I have not kept one commandment one time. Do you believe that about yourself? Now let me tell you, if you don't, you don't have any idea what the Ten Commandments mean. You don't have any idea how holy God is. You have no idea how sinful you are, if you don't believe that. If you're a believer, you understand. I've not kept one commandment. Are you telling me the truth? Are you lying? I'm telling you the truth. Even when I quote the scripture perfectly and accurately, because I'm the one doing it, not that the scripture's changed at all, but because I'm doing it, there's some kind of self-promotion involved, some kind of self-seeking, some kind of selfishness, some kind of, I've never told the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I might have told the truth, but I've got me in it. That's the problem. That's how I can't keep one commandment one time, even if I tell the truth. If I'm telling it, there's a lie in there somewhere. I've not kept one commandment one time.

Number two, I've kept all the commandments perfectly. When Jesus Christ kept the commandments perfectly because I'm united to him, I kept all the commandments perfectly. You know, that's what we're confessing in baptism. When I'm baptized, I'm saying, when Christ lived, I lived. When Christ died, I died. When Christ was raised from the dead, I was raised from the dead in newness of life. That's our confession.

So if he's talking about the Ten Commandments, number one, I've not kept one of them once. I've kept all of them perfectly. Those things are both true. But he's not talking about the Ten Commandments. Turn to 1 John chapter 3. Here's what he's talking about. First John, first epistle of John chapter three. Verse 23. This is his commandment. Now he calls it commandments in verse 22. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him because we keep his commandments. and do those things that are pleasing in His sight, this is His commandment, that we should believe on the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another as He gave us commandment.

Now here's God's commandment, to me, to you, to believe on the name of His Son. Jesus Christ. Now the name represents when a poor illustration, but when you think of Todd Nyberg, there's a certain person you think of. If you know me, you know, my attributes, you know, my, if you know me very well, you know, my weaknesses and my character flaws. Uh, but there's a person behind the name, you know, my strengths, you know, my weaknesses. If you know me, um, To believe on the name of Christ is to believe on the person behind the name. I am relying on the person behind the name. Sovereign, holy, righteous, all-powerful, all-wise, incapable of failure. That's the one I'm believing on. the person behind the name, Jesus Christ, God's prophet, God's priest, God's king, the Messiah. He came to be the prophet, the word of God. He's the priest that if he represents you, you must be saved. He's the king, his will must be done. That's what it is to believe on his name. You're relying on the person behind the name.

And here's the other commandment. That we love one another. That we love one another. He that loveth him that begat, loveth him also that is begotten of him. Now we love all men. We want all men to be saved, but what a bond of love exists between all who've been born of God. I'm loving somebody that God's begotten. They belong to Christ. We love one another. That is the keeping of His commandments.

Now, what is the evidence that I have this knowledge that He's in the Father, I'm in Him, He's in me? We believe the gospel. We believe on the name of His Son. We love one another as He gave us commandment. May God give everybody in this room this saving revelatory knowledge of Him that He, the Lord Jesus Christ, is in the Father. And I'm in Him. And He is in me.

Let's pray. Lord, I trust Your Word has been preached. The feeble man, yes, but it's our word and our word will not be believed or received apart from your spirit. Giving us grace to live and believe and receive. And Lord, I ask in Christ's name that everybody in this room by your grace, by your spirit might be taught by you. that you are in the Father, the Father is in you, we are in the Son, and the Son's in us. Lord, this is above our natural ability to believe. We ask that you would do this for us and in us for Christ's sake. In his name we pray, amen.
