Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. - Romans 8:26
Prayer is for ourselves, not for God. It is we that need to commune with Him; he needs not us. God only receives that which he gives. These things we must know to understand the need, use and privilege of prayer—Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God (Rom 8:26).
God makes us to feel our need for him, and to cry out to him in thanksgiving for grace, mercy, and help in our time of need. Prayer does not change things—It is God, who never changes, that changes things according to his will for the good of his people and for his glory. We ask because he says ask! We receive because he is gracious to give. Prayer is the blessed privilege whereby his people come boldly to his throne and asking with confidence that he will do what is best, according to his wisdom, justice, and holiness.
The blessing of prayer is accessible only by the Lord Jesus Christ. Christ is our intercessor. We come to God by Him. Not just any one can come to God in any way. We pray to God by faith in Christ—seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for us. The heart of true prayer is thy will be done!
