In the sermon "Going up to Jerusalem," Don Bell delves into the significance of Jesus Christ's impending crucifixion and resurrection as foretold in Mark 10:28-34. The preacher emphasizes the necessity of abandoning earthly attachments for the sake of following Christ, supporting this claim with references from Scripture, particularly the walk of the disciples who left their worldly lives behind to pursue Jesus. He makes a poignant connection between the sufferings of Christ—prophesied as being delivered, mocked, and killed—and their significance in God's plan for redemption, arguing that such sacrifices bear profound implications for believers receiving eternal life. The sermon underscores the importance of understanding Christ's atoning death and resurrection as central to the Gospel, suggesting that having this understanding goes hand in hand with experiencing true spiritual transformation and assurance of salvation.

10. It was up in Sellersburg, Indiana
at Redeemer Grace Church. First time ever being there.
Clay Curtis and I were preaching. And Todd and Lynn came over. I got a real surprise, you know,
he asked me if I was quitting preaching, quitting pastoring
in September. I said, no. He said, I'm going
on vacation in September. And I said, now I think they've
decided to come and spend a week or two with us in our vacation.
But that was a surprise, you know, a preacher all the way
up in Lexington. I heard that I was going to quit preaching
in September. But now look with me here in
Mark chapter 10, and I'll start reading down here
in verse 28 and go down through verse 34. Then Peter began to say unto
him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. Our Lord
answered and said, Verily I say unto you, that there is no man
that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother,
or wife, or children, or lands for my sake and the gospels.
but he shall receive a hundredfold now in this time houses and brethren
and sisters and mothers and children and lands with persecutions and
in the world to come eternal life. But many that are first
shall be last in the last first. And they were in the way going
up to Jerusalem And Jesus went before them, and they were amazed. And as they followed, they were
afraid. And he took again the twelve
and began to tell them what things should happen unto him, saying,
Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man shall be delivered
unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn
him to death. and shall deliver him to the
Gentiles, and they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and
shall spit upon him, and shall kill him, and the third day he
shall rise again. Our Father, our gracious, eternal
God in heaven, blessed be your holy name, Lord, it's the God
of heaven and earth who measures the waters in the hall of his
hands, who inhabits eternity, counts the nations as a drop
in the bucket, that sits on the circle of the earth, and the
clouds are the dust of his feet, and his breath creates the frost.
Lord, what a blessing it is to approach such a God, a just God
and a savior, A God who provided salvation and done it on purpose.
Oh, blessed be your name. We're so blessed to be able to
worship you, to know you, to reveal yourself to us and to
our hearts. And I thank you most of all for
the gospel and the Lord Jesus Christ, who himself is promised
in the gospel. And Lord, we separated to the
gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. All of us who are believers have
been separated to that gospel, separated to believe it, separated
to be saved by it, separated to be sanctified by it, separated
to be glorified by it and kept by it. And Lord, we praise you
for that. And Father, I ask that you'd
meet with us here today Lord, thank you for the meeting this
last weekend, and thank you for the fellowship we enjoyed so
much. And I thank you for this meeting
this morning. And Lord, enable me to speak,
but especially enable the saints to hear. Lord, if I could say
something, but if no one hears it, it wouldn't be anything. But Lord, if you'd enable us
to speak and hear at the same time, what a blessing that would
be. that they could hear with the
spiritual ear, hear with the heart, hear with the soul. And
God, we pray most of all that you'd bring glory to yourself.
And we pray for our brothers and sisters now who are going
through a great fight of affliction, whose hearts is heavy, who's
in trouble now, either going in trouble or coming out of trouble
or in trouble now. Lord, God bless them. Lord, strengthen
them, encourage them, and please guide your people in this world.
Keep them from themselves. Keep us from our own reasoning.
Keep us from our own self-will. Keep us from our self-righteousness.
Keep us, oh Lord, and Lord, we shall be kept. Bring glory to
yourself today for Christ's sake. Amen, amen. Let's all stand together as we
sing the hymn of the day in the bulletin. his saints, deep on his heart
engraved, attitude to the state and wants of all his love has

Light and perfection shine And wisdom, grace, and glory be The
Savior all-divine, The blood which as a priest He
bears, For sinners He's His own. The incense of his prayers and
tears Perfumes the holy throne In him my weary soul has rest
Though I am weak and low, I read my name upon His breast and see
the Father smile. Be seated. Back here in Mark 10, it says here in verse 33, verse
32, they were in the way going up to Jerusalem. And that's the
subject I want to talk about this morning, going up to Jerusalem.
Why our Lord was going up to Jerusalem. But you remember last
week when that rich young ruler asked who then can be saved.
He wanted to be saved, but he didn't want to be saved on Christ's
terms. Oh, if he could have bought eternal
life, he would have bought it. If he could have paid for it,
he would have paid for it. But he couldn't do that. And
so he walked away sad, but the Lord loved him. And I believe
that the Lord Jesus Christ eventually saved that man. But Peter says
down here when he said, who then can be saved? And Peter said
to him in verse 28, and this is a blessing to all believers,
Lord, we've left all and followed Thee. We've left all and followed
Thee. And they really had. This is
just not words that they was talking about. They really had.
You remember our Lord Jesus Christ James and John and Peter and
them were fishermen and they were in their boats with their
father. Mending nets and doing that and
our Lord walked by and He looked at them and said, follow me.
And they immediately got out of those boats. James and John
and Simon Peter got out of those boats immediately. James and
John left their father in the boat and they immediately got
out of those boats and followed Christ. THEY LEFT WHAT THEY HAD
AND FOLLOWED HIM. FOLLOWED HIM. AND THEN MATTHEW
WAS SITTING THERE COLLECTING TAXES. HE WAS SITTING
IN A BUILDING OR SOMEWHERE HE WAS COLLECTING TAXES. THAT'S
WHAT HE DID FOR A LIVING. HE WAS A TAX COLLECTOR. PEOPLE
WOULD COME UP AND PAY THEIR TAXES TO THIS MAN. AND I LORD JESUS
WALKED BY AND LOOKED AT HIM AND SAID FOLLOW ME. HE LEFT THE MONEY
ON THE TABLE, PEOPLE IN LINE TO PAY THEIR TAXES, AND FOLLOWED
HIM. SO WHEN THESE FELLAS SAID THEY
LEFT ALL, THAT'S JUST NOT WORDS, THOSE ARE NOT EMPTY WORDS, THEY
REALLY DID THAT, THEY REALLY DID THAT. AND PAUL, HE SAID EVERYTHING
THAT EVER WAS GAINED TO ME, EVERYTHING THAT I ACCOMPLISHED IN THIS WORLD,
Everything that I amounted to, all my Phariseeism, all my works,
all my law keeping, all of my self righteousness, you know
what he said? When Christ apprehended me, you know what he said? I
counted every bit of that but garbage and dung. Everything
that ever I had before I knew Christ is nothing but loss. It's nothing. So there's people
that left all and followed him, left all and followed him. But
look what a blessed promise our Lord gives to them. Then Jesus
answered and said, I say unto you, I'm going to tell you fellas
something. I'm going to tell all of you
something. There's no man, oh what a blessing. And I'll tell
you what I want to talk about. Our Lord's telling us what's
worth keeping and what's worth losing. What is worth keeping
and what's worth losing. And that's what he's talking
about here. No man, no man, no man has left his house, or left his brothers, or left
his sisters, or his father, or his mother, or his wife, or his
children, or his lands for my sake in the gospels. Oh, my, what s worth losing the
Kingdom of God and what s worth leaving for the Kingdom of God?
That s what he said. Would you link, would you? I
ve known folks that when their son, you know, I found out that
family blood is thicker than the blood of Christ. Somebody
get upset in the church and they leave If it s a young couple,
it won t be very long before Mom and Daddy will go with them. And that s what our Lord is talking
about right here. That s what He s talking about. Would you
leave your father? Would you leave your mother? Is Christ
more important to you than anything in this world? Is the Kingdom
of God worth giving up everything? Is it worth Is it worth having
the best relationship with your father or your mother, your brothers,
sisters? Is it worth having this house? Is it worth making that to be
everything to you and losing the kingdom of God? Now, He's not saying you have
to do those things, but I tell you what, You'll be willing to
do it. You'll be willing to do it. Is Christ more precious to you
than anybody in this world? Everything that we see, touch,
taste, and handle is temporary. I've told you that time again.
Our houses are temporary. Our clothes is temporary. Our
cars are temporary. Our health is temporary. Our
life is temporary. The only thing that's eternal
is our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. And what would
you give not to lose that? Is your wife more important than
your relationship with Christ? Is your house more important
than your relationship? Is anything more important to you than your
relationship with Christ? And that's what our Lord's saying
here. Peter said, we've left all. He said, well, I'll tell
you something. You didn't lose anything. He said, you didn't
lose nothing. He didn't, you didn't lose nothing.
And look what he says now. Oh my, to lose an all for the
kingdom of God or leave all for the kingdom of God. But look
what he says now. But he shall receive a hundredfold. Not just one or two houses, a
hundredfold. Oh my, now listen to this, brothers,
sisters, mothers, children, lands with persecutions. Oh my, we're
not over and look, it says you shall receive manifold, many
more in this present time, right now, here in this present time,
many more houses. Many more houses. I've stayed
in a lot of people's houses over the years and had a lot of people
stay in ours. Oh, many more houses, many more
parents, many more brethren. I got more brothers right here
in this building than I've ever had in my whole life. Right here,
right now. Sisters. Sisters. Brothers. Right here, right now. And I,
you know, I was just up in, up there in Indiana and there's
people up there that I've known since 77, 78. The fellow that
was leading the singing, I remember when he was crawling, when I
met his mother and dad, he was still crawling and he was leading
the singing. So I'm his big brother. I'm his
big brother. That's what our Lord's saying
here. So, oh my, and not only many more brethren and children,
and oh my goodness, spiritual blessings. What about all the
spiritual blessings that we get? Joy and peace, contentment, oh,
contentment. Rest, rest for our souls. And
oh, not only that, but we've been blessed to see God's glory,
God's glory in the person, in the face of our Lord Jesus Christ. The love of God shed abroad in
our hearts. Oh, we have all these earthly
blessings, all these temporal, God blesses us with all these
blessings in this world. And then, oh my, look what he
says, and in the world to come. Not this world, and in the world
to come. There's another world besides
this one. There's another time and place
besides this one. And that's what he says, and
in the world to come. I like the way he says that,
in the world to come. In the world to come. Oh, what
are you gonna have? You're gonna have life everlasting. You gonna give up life here for
that? Or hold on to life here and miss
that? Oh, life everlasting. And that's
what He started here in us. He started in us life. Christ
in us is the hope of glory. Christ Himself is our life. And oh my, what He started here,
this life that He started in here, it will be finished. And
He says in the ages to come, and I tell you it's already come
for believers, You know why? We've tasted the powers of the
world to come. We've tasted the grace of God.
We've tasted the powers of world to come. And I tell you, beloved,
this world to come, this world is not our home. This world,
we're strangers and pilgrims here. We really, really are. Read a fella said this morning,
a man said, you know, that if we praying for Christ to come,
we're praying against the sovereign will of God. Well, then John
messed up and he said, amen, even so come quickly, Lord Jesus. And he's the one who wrote Revelation.
He got to the end of it. Amen, even so come quickly, Lord
Jesus. Was he praying against the will
of God? When we pray against the will of God for oh Christ,
if Christ don't come get us all, he's gonna come get us one at
a time. And in the world to come, that's the world I'm looking
for, the world to come. Ain't you glad that there's a
world past this one? Oh boy. A world outside this
world. And every once in a while, we
get a taste of it. Every once in a while, we're
blessed to enjoy it. Every once in a while, we get
a glimpse of it. But oh my, but in our Lord, what He does after
He tells that, He said, many that are first. Oh, that just
like this young ruler, He come to put everything, you know,
and what try to do it. He wanted to be first, but He'll
end up being last. And the last shall be first.
And look what our Lord says here. Now He starts talking about His
death. And there's in verse 32, and
they were in their way going up to Jerusalem. Oh, going up
to Jerusalem. And Jesus went before them and they
were amazed. They were amazed because he was
going to Jerusalem and they followed and they were afraid. They were
afraid. And he began to tell them what
should happen unto him when he went to Jerusalem. He's going
up there for a purpose. He's going up there for a reason.
And our Lord Jesus Christ here predicts His death, tells exactly
what's going to happen to Him when He gets to Jerusalem. And
I tell you what, He tells details of what's going to happen to
Him. And so when He talks about His death, He says there in verse
33, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man shall be delivered
unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn
him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles. They shall
mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and
shall kill him, and the third day he shall rise again." What
details our Lord gives of His death, telling them what's going
to happen to Him. And He's telling us here the
importance of His death and how He was foretold. Our Lord Jesus
knew that this was coming. He had told His disciples about
it before. But oh my, our Lord Jesus, He's
talking about the importance of His death. And I tell you,
after He had already foretold it, He told everything about
it. He told them in one place, He said, if any man follow Me,
if any man follow Me, first thing he needs to do is deny himself.
Deny self. And what He's talking about denying
ANY HOPE of being saved by ANYTHING ABOUT YOURSELF! ANY POWER YOU
GOT, ANY ABILITY YOU GOT, ANY RIGHTEOUSNESS YOU GOT, ANY STRENGTH
YOU GOT, ANY HOPE YOU GOT, DO NOT DARE TRUST YOURSELF AND THINK
THAT YOU CAN BE SAVED BY ANYTHING BY YOURSELF! SELF HAS NO PART
IN SALVATION! THEY THAT ARE IN THE FLESH CANNOT
PLEASE GOD! THE FLESH PROFITS NOTHING! NOTHING! and all he foretold
his death. And oh my, our Lord Jesus says,
Father, he said, I finished the work that you gave me to do.
And all he remembered, he foretold his death many, many times. Look down here in verse 45 of
Matthew 10. Oh my, he referred to his death
many, many times. Here he says this, for even the
Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and list
this, give his life, give my life a ransom, a ransom. Who do you pay a ransom to? Somebody
that somebody has kidnapped, somebody that's been held in
bondage, somebody that's been held against their will, and
somebody that's been held by somebody else. And I, Lord Jesus
Christ, we was held captive by sin, held captive by death, held
captive by justice, held captive by law, held captive by the curse
of God and the covenant of works. And I, Lord Jesus Christ said,
I'll pay the ransom and set them free from all of those things.
That's what our master's talking about. And oh my, he told him
about one time, he said, I must be about my father's business. You know, his father and mother,
they went up to Jerusalem when he was 12 years old and they
went about a day's journey and they looked around for him. Three
days journey, in fact. Three days journey, they look
around for him, they couldn't find him. And they turned around,
walked all the way back to Jerusalem, and they found him. And he was
sitting, talking to a bunch of wise men, smart men, intelligent
men, scribes and Pharisees, all they know all this stuff. And
he was confounding them when he was 12. And his mother and
father come up to him and said, son, you worried us, you troubled
us. Where you been? He said, don't
you know, don't you know I must be about my father's business?
And he wasn't talking about Joseph, he was talking about his heavenly
father. My meat is to do the will of him that sent me. And
when he says we go up to Jerusalem, it's not just a natural ascent,
though when you go to Jerusalem, it's all uphill. no matter which
way you get, it was up as high than any place else. But it was
not a natural ascent he was talking about, but he was going up there
in heart, he was going up there in purpose, he was going up there
to do something for his people that nobody else could do. We
go up to Jerusalem, and where his heart, we went up there with
his purpose. It said he steadfastly set his
face like a flint. I'm not going to be changed,
I'm not going to be taken away from it. And Jerusalem, Jerusalem's
where God's temple was. Jerusalem is where all the pilgrims
and all the saints and all the Jewish people went to worship.
At three feasts a year, they had to go up there at three feasts
a year. And every time they went up there, they went up there
to go to the temple and go up there and offer sacrifices. They
went up there to offer sacrifices. And there was people that sat
around, they sold doves, they sold lambs, they sold goats,
they sold Pigeon they sold all kinds of
things for popular offer for sacrifices So if they didn't
bring a sacrifice they could buy one and offer to sacrifice
they were going up there And they would bring a sacrifice
in all these feasts and all the things that they went up there
They go up for the Passover. They go up for the Passover and
Our Lord Jesus Christ is going up to worship He's going up to
worship and you know what he's doing He's going to offer a sacrifice
when he gets there He's got a sacrifice to offer. You know what the sacrifice
he's gonna offer? Gonna offer himself. God said
his soul would be made an offering for sin. Our Lord Jesus Christ
went up there to be made an offering for sin. And he's gonna offer
himself without spot to God. He's gonna offer himself as a
sacrifice for sin. And oh my, that's what He said,
we're gonna go up, and the Son of Man shall be delivered, delivered. There's three predictions here
our Lord made about His suffering, three things He said about. He
said about His suffering, said about His death, and said about
His resurrection. He said they'll condemn Him to
death, they'll mock Him, scourge Him, He'll die, they condemn
Him to death and kill Him, and He shall rise the third day.
Look over in Luke chapter 9 with me. Luke chapter 9. I'm going
to show you something if I can. I'm pretty bad to go somewhere
and be in the wrong place, but I hope I'm not this time. You
know, our Lord predicted three things, talked about His suffering.
Even after His resurrection, you know, when He appeared to
His disciples, He said, Must not the Son of Man have suffered,
suffered before He could enter into His glory? And look what He said here in
verse 30, And behold, there talked with Him two men, which were
Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory, and spake of His death,
His decease, which He should accomplish at Jerusalem. He said that they'd come to talk
about Him, what His death was going to accomplish. And you
know He said there was the prophets and there was the law. And they
was talking about what Christ would accomplish at His death.
And He's going up there to predict Himself and tell Himself and
tell His disciples. I'm going up there And there's
going to be some bad things happen. Going to be some things that
you ain't going to get. There's going to be some things that
you ain't going to enjoy. There's going to be some things
that's going to shock you. There's going to be some things
happen to me that you just could not imagine that's going to happen.
And oh, our Lord said, all things shall be accomplished written
of me. All things written of me shall
be accomplished. And you know what? He faced them
unwavering. He did not waver. He did not
waver. And look how He talked about
this. Now, the first thing He says,
Behold, there's five things that He talks about here. And the
first thing is, the Son of Man shall be delivered to the chief
priests and scribes. And that's exactly what happened.
He got up to Jerusalem. And you know, He's in His last
week there. He's in His last few days there.
He's at Jerusalem. And I tell you, John 17 starts
about when he's just 24 hours away from his death. And our
Lord Jesus Christ said, the first thing they'll do is deliver me
the chief priest and the scribes. And that's exactly what happened.
He went into Gethsemane and prayed. And when he was coming back out
of Gethsemane, there they were. They come and apprehended him
and arrested him. And the first place they took
him was to the chief priest and the scribes. It's the first place
they took him. and oh my, look what he said,
and that's what they did. Oh, shamefully entreated him.
And not only did he go to the tribes and priests, and then
look what happens, he says, not only that, and they shall condemn him to
death. They'll say, oh, they'll put him on a mock trial, they'll
ask him a lot of questions, and they put him on a mock trial,
they hired people to lie on him, They slapped him, they beat him,
they done all kinds of things to him. And they had the chief
priest in him, had him, they had him. And oh, how they mistreated
him. And they mistreated him for hours
on hours and on hours and on hours. And these are the people,
these are the best, they were the religious people of that
time. And our Lord Jesus Christ, and
then they shall condemn him to death. they shall condemn him
to death. And oh my, and they shall mock
him. Look with me in John 19. Look
with me in John 19. Look up there in verse 19. Now, you
know, this is where Peter denied him. He's in the high priest's
house, you know, he's in the palace. You know, this priest
lived in a palace, kind of like the Pope does, lives in a palace.
And the high priest asked Jesus of his disciples and his doctrine,
oh, what are you teaching? You're teaching against the things
of John 19, John, excuse me, I'm John 18, 19, that's where
I'm at. And we'll get to 19 here in a
minute. John 18, 19. And Jesus answered and said,
I speak openly to the world, even taught in the synagogue
and the temple. And the Jews are always there, and in secret
I said nothing. Why asking you about them? Why
are you asking me? And then look what happens. And
when he had just spoken, one of the offers which stood by
struck Jesus with the palm of his hands. And listen to this,
you answer the high priest like that, you going to talk to the
priest like that? You going to talk to the religious leader
like that? Who do you think you are? And that s how they treated
our Lord Jesus Christ, and He told them before He got there,
this is what s going to happen. And look what else He said, slapped
him with the palm of His hand. Oh, my! And I tell you what,
and then in Jesus s answer, If I spoke an evil, bear witness
of the evil. And oh, my! And that is the high
priest, they said, you're beside yourself. You're beside yourself. And oh my. They led, in verse
28, they led Jesus from Caiaphas under the hall of judgment. Now
this is the high priest. Early, and they themselves were
not in the judgment hall. And they told them to send him
over to Pilate. And what our Lord Jesus said,
said they sent him to the Gentiles. The chief priest and them condemned
him to death. Condemned him to death. And oh
my, then they sent him to Pilate. Pilate answered. Didn't it, Pilate?
And then our Lord said over here, said he shall be scourged. Shall
be scourged. Verse nine, chapter 19, verse
one. Then Pilate therefore took Jesus
and scourged him. Scourged him. You know what scourging
is? That means being beaten. Beaten very, very severely. Taking
that cat of nine tails and just beating him and beating him and
beating him. It's not like taking, we knew our parents took a belt
to us. It wasn't, that don't even come close. They took our
Lord Jesus and scourged him. Took his back and just beat him
with, beat him and beat him and beat him with whips and whips
and whips and blood was blowing out of his back. And then look
what happened next. And the soldiers planted a crown
of thorns Oh, my. Scorched him, mocked
him. Here they are mocking him. The
soldiers plaited a crown of thorns and put it on his head. Oh, my. And then they put on him a purple
robe, mocking him as a king, and said,
Hail, King of the Jews! And then they began to beat him
with their hands. Then they began to smack him
from one, both, it said with their hands. Then began to smite
him with their hands. What did this man do worthy of
that? They began to smite him with their hands. Didn't say
hand, hands. Beat him, beat him with her hands.
Smote him with her hands. Hit him beside his head. Hit
him behind his head. Hit him across his face. Hit
him in his chest. Hit him, hit him. Smote him with
her hands. And Pilate went forth and saith
unto them, Though I bring forth him that I know I don't find
no fault with him. And look what they done. You're
talking about mocking him. Then came Jesus forth, wearing
the crown of thorns and the purple robe, and pounced unto him. Behold
the man! And the chief priests and officers
saw him. They cried out, Crucify him!
Crucify him! Crucify him! Oh, my. They condemned him to death.
And I tell you what, they took him, they mocked him, and said
five things. Chief priest, condemn him to
death. Took to the Gentiles, they mocked
Him, beat Him, and then they put Him to death. Our Lord was
obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. And what
a place, what a place of humiliation for our Lord Jesus Christ. This
picture you see of Him with a little loincloth on Him was not right,
that's not right. Our Lord Jesus was was a man
with dark curly hair, with dark eyes. He describes him in Song
of Solomon. And they took our Lord Jesus
and they put Him in a place of humiliation. They started humiliating
Him from the time they took Him out of the Garden of Gethsemane
until He died on a cross. Everything they did to him humiliated
him. And then it says there, not only
that, they shall scourge him, and it says they shall spit upon
him. Back over in Mark 9, they shall spit upon him. They'd clear
their throat and spit on him. Spit on him. Spit on him. And then it says here they shall
kill him. Kill him. Kill him. Oh, my. They put Him in a place of humiliation,
curse, and shame. His death, He Himself bear our
sins in His own body on the tree, being put to death in the flesh,
but quickened by the Spirit. You know, our Lord Jesus Christ,
He said Himself, He said He made His soul an offering for sin.
He said, you know, and this is the thing, bless his name, bless
his holy name. You know why Lord Jesus went
through so much stuff? Because of us. Because of us. He had no rights. That's why
Pilate said, I find no fault in this man. This man's done
nothing worthy of death. And he hadn't done. You know
why he died, you know why he suffered, you know why he's humiliated,
you know why he's made a curse? For us. For us. How in the world, why
in the world was someone so holy, someone so precious, someone
so blessed, someone so high, someone so holy, someone so perfect,
someone sinless, Someone who never, ever did anything but
perfection all the days of his life. Why would he let people
treat him like that? Me and you would get indignant
when we see people treated like that. It bothers us to see people
mistreated. But oh, if this man was mistreated,
not for himself. It wasn't for himself. You know
who it was for? It's for sorry, sorry, sorry,
sorry people like us. The worst kind of people. The
very worst kind of people. He didn't do this for people
that were good. He didn't do this for people
that thought they was okay. He didn't do this for people
who thought that they could save themselves. He didn't do this
for people. He did this for his seed, for his elect, for his
people. I'll lay down my life of ransom
for who? For many. Oh my. And our Lord Jesus Christ, he
bore the curse, he bore the shame. And here's the thing, sin has
guilt to it. Sin has shame to it. And our
Lord Jesus Christ, he bore the guilt and he bore the shame of our
sin. And bearing our guilt and bearing
our shame is why he was treated such a way. He was shamefully
entreated because our sin is so shameful. He was mocked because
we mocked Him with our sin. And oh, and our Lord Jesus Christ,
He said, my God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Do you
know why? He said, because you're holy.
You're holy, and this is one of the most amazing things, and
I never get over this, I never get over this, how God, God is
holy, God is righteous, God is just, and He will not lower His
standard to save anybody. So how in the world can God Almighty,
holy and righteous and just, take sinners who are unholy,
unrighteous, and unjust, how can He, God be just and righteous,
and punish the sinner, and condemn the sinner, and curse the sinner,
and kill the sinner, and cause him to die, and save him all
at the same time? How can He do that? This is how
he did it. He said, in my wisdom, I'll make
my son to take their place. I'll make my son, I'll cause
my son to bear their humiliation. I'll cause my son to bear their
curse. I'll cause my son to bear their
sin. I'll cause my son to bear their
guilt. And when he does that, I'll leave
Him to Himself, and I'll be a just God because I'm punishing sin. I'll be a righteous God because
I'm righteously doing it. I'm upholding my law. I'm upholding
my righteousness. I'm satisfying my justice. So
I'll put all their sin on Him. I'll put their guilt on Him,
and all the shame of their sin, I'll put it on Him. and I'll leave him to himself,
because that's what I gotta do with them. I gotta leave them
to themselves. And then our Lord Jesus Christ,
last word he said on the cross, it is finished. It is finished. God stayed just,
God stayed righteous, God stayed holy. By putting everything on his
son and justly treating him in our room instead and bless his
name, he turns around and he said, he that believeth on the
son hath life. Not gonna get it, he's got it.
And that man that believes on my son, I will declare him righteous
and just. And I tell you, if Christ bore
our sin, we ain't gonna bear him. If Christ bore our curse,
we're not gonna bear him. If Christ bore our shame, that's
why he said, he that believeth on him shall not be brought to
shame. Huh? What a wonderful exchange. He became what we are, that we
might be what he is. And God stays God. And God gets
all the glory. Huh? Oh my, they put him to death,
and then look what else it says about him there in verse 34 here
of Mark chapter 10. Oh, they killed him. They killed
him. They killed him. Condemned him to death, and then
they killed him. But look what happens. He said the third day,
he's going to rise again. I won't try to preach on that
tonight, Romans 4, 24, 4, 16, but anyway, Romans 4, he was delivered
for our offenses. Delivered for our offenses. But
he was raised. He is raised again from the dead.
For what? To show how God justifies us.
As there sits our justification. How do you know your sins ago?
Christ died. How do you know God won't condemn
the elect? Because Christ died. How do you
know you re gonna be saved? Because if God be for us, who
can be against us? Who shall lend ANYTHING to the
charge of God s elect? We are no condemnation to them
that are in Christ. And oh my, and He shall, He SHALL
rise again. Oh my, look over here in Psalm
16, Psalm 16. Mary came out there early in
the morning. You remember Mary Magdalene came
out there early in the morning. She was looking for Christ. She was looking for him and looked
in the tomb. Oh my. Look what he said here
in verse eight. Psalm 16, eight. This is our
Lord Jesus. I have set the Lord always before
me. He is at my right hand. I shall
not be moved. This is Christ talking here.
Therefore my heart is glad. Psalm 16, 8. Therefore my heart is glad, my
glory rejoices. And my flesh also, he's talking
about that body that's in the grave, shall rest in hope, rest
in hope. Why? For thou wilt not leave
my soul in hell, neither shalt thou suffer thine holy one to
see corruption. Thou wilt show me the path of
life, I will come out of that grave. In thy presence is fullness
of joy, and at thy right hand, that's where I'm gonna sit in
pleasures forevermore. Huh? Oh my. Our Lord Jesus Christ,
He rose again, and the fact that He rose again, rose again, tells
us that God accepted His sacrifice, accepted what He did on our behalf.
Now I want you to look over with me now in Luke chapter nine,
I believe it is. I believe it's Luke chapter 9.
No, Luke 18. Excuse me, Luke 18. Our Lord's telling them the same
thing over here. He says in verse 31, Luke 18, 31, Then he took unto
him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem,
and all things that are written by the prophets concerning me
shall be accomplished. Going to be accomplished, everything
that's ever written of thee shall be accomplished. He talked about
being delivered to the Gentiles, mocked, spitefully entreated,
spit it on, Scourge him, put him to death, and the third day
he shall rise again. Now look what it says right here.
And they understood none of these things, none of these things. And this saying was hid from
them, neither knew they the things which were spoken. My, my. They didn't have a clue what
our Lord was talking about. Ain't that something? They did,
you know, the spiritual slowness of His disciples. They understood
none of these things. And there were two reasons. They
were looking for a Messiah to come and set up a kingdom and
sit on His throne. That s what they were looking
for, somebody to come and dispose the Roman government and make
Jerusalem to be like it was in the days of David and Solomon,
and Christ was going to, the Messiah was going to sit on the
throne and rule the whole world from Jerusalem. That s what they
were expecting. That s what our disciples asked
Him before He ascended to glory, Lord, when s the Kingdom going
to come? And that's what he's talking about. Lord, when's that
kingdom gonna come when you sit on your throne? But you know
how Christ came into Jerusalem as a king? You know how he come,
what the throne he set on when he come into Jerusalem? He come
on a coat, the foal of an ass. He come riding in Jerusalem on
a coat, on a donkey. Thy king cometh unto thee meek
and lowly, riding. That's how he come in as a king.
That's how he presented himself as a king. Oh my, but oh my,
they were looking for a Messiah to come in glory. They had preconceived
ideas and opinions and beliefs. But it says here, this saying
was hid from them. Verse 34 there, it said, these
things were, they understood they were hid from them. And
I tell you, that was a time they was hid from us. We didn't have
no of these things. They were hid from us. And oh
my, they weren't able to bear it. They wouldn't be able to
bear it. The cross of Christ has always been a stumbling block
and a fence to proud human nature, and it's still hid to so many.
Our Lord said, I thank the old Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent and revealed
them unto me. If our gospel be hid, you know
what's it to? Them that are lost. Them that
are lost. And oh my. And I tell you, it's
still a stumbling block. And I tell you, there's so many
people that just don't have this sight to see, still hid from
them. And what was actually accomplished
by our Lord's death and resurrection, and the scripture says, they
knew none of these things. They knew not the things which
were spoken. Do you know anything about what Christ did Do you
reckon he did it for you? How many people here think that
Christ went up to Jerusalem and suffered these things for you? Suffered these things for you.
How many people here think that when Christ was on that cross,
when he was the chief priest, they condemned him to death and
they killed him and all the things he went through. Do you, how
many here people reckon that they think that was done for
them? I know there's several people in here don't think that's
done for them. You know why they don't think it's done for them?
They're too good. They're too good. They don't
need it. They don't need Christ. They
don't need his death. They're like these disciples
here, it's hid from them. It's hid from them. Oh God, God, God, oh God, please
open people's eyes. Give them sight to see. Don't hide it from them, don't
hide them from them. Listen, I'm trying my best to not hide
anything in my preaching, but I tell you this, if God's hidden
from your eyes, I pray that God would open your eyes to see the
truth as it is in Christ. That you take your place, take
your place before the Lord Jesus Christ and say, Lord, have mercy
on me, have mercy on me. Our Father, in the precious name,
blessed name of Christ our Lord, thank you for your great and
abundant mercy given us in Christ. Lord, I know your word won't
return void. It'll accomplish what you sent
it to, whether life unto life or death unto death. It'll be
a saver of life to them that believe. It'll be a saver of
death unto them that believe not. Lord, it's a sweet smell
to us who are believers. What our Lord went through, and
most poor disciples, they didn't know it. They didn't understand
it. It was hid from them. And Lord, it was hid from us
one time, but you and your sovereign mercy revealed it to us, opened
our hearts, opened our understanding, took the scales off our eyes,
and we see clearly now that what Christ did, he did not for himself. but for sinners, for his elect,
for people that has no strength, no hope, no ability to save themselves,
without strength in this world, without Christ in this world,
without God in this world. But Lord, you opened our hearts,
opened our eyes, and I thank you for that. Oh, how I thank
you, and I pray that you'd do that here for people in this
congregation, For Christ's sake, amen, amen. He's the Savior of my soul. Jesus, my Jesus. He's the Savior of my soul. He's the Savior of my soul. Jesus, Jesus, See you tonight, six o'clock, God
willing.
