David somebody asked me a few
weeks ago Who is one of the most prominent? person in the scriptures
beside the Lord Jesus Christ And the most recognizable the
most That you would say God had his hand on I said David David
His soul In fact, he is our Lord's descendant of David. How many
times? I think I read sometime this
week that David's name is mentioned 66 times in the Old Testament. 54 times in the New Testament. So he's a prominent, prominent
figure. He's all the offices of our Lord
Jesus Christ in some way especially as a king are in him and recognized
in our Lord Jesus Christ the day God said Samuel go down get
your horn fill it up with some oil and go down to Bethlehem
who in the world what's in Bethlehem you know what Micah said about
Bethlehem one in ten thousand of Judah It's an absolutely insignificant
place. Utterly and absolutely insignificant. Bethlehem. He said, now you go
down there. And I've got me a king that I
provided. Provided me a king. And Samuel
said, well, okay. So down there he went. Called
Jesse and his sons to the sacrifice. But how will Samuel recognize
God's chosen king? How is he going to recognize
him? The first one that came by him, he said, just exactly
like Israel did, he said, surely, surely this is the Lord's anointed
right here. The first one comes in front
of him. He said, this is him, gotta be him. God said, Samuel,
just back up, just back up. You're looking on the outward
appearance. You're looking on his countenance.
You're looking at his height. You're looking at his stature.
He said, that's not the way I look at things. I don't look at men
the way you look at men. I don't look at people the way
you look at people. I see the heart. I'm looking on the heart. And so, how's he gonna know God's
chosen? Gotta be a revelation. God's
got to reveal him to Samuel. David don't even know it yet. So that's what he said down there
in verse 3. And call Jesse to the sacrifice
and I will show thee what thou shalt do and thou shalt anoint
unto me him whom I name unto you. I've got His name. I know who He is. And you won't
know until I tell you. You won't know until you see
it. And ain't that the way it is with the Lord Jesus Christ?
If He doesn't reveal Himself to a man, nobody will ever know
Him. Then He come among His own, and His own received Him not.
And I tell you, beloved, And he goes down here, and then look,
7, here he is in verse 6, he glories in the flesh, he glories
in the mighty, the way the world does. Oh, look on the height
of him, he said, oh, surely the Lord's anointed before him. And oh, listen, Saul was chosen
of the people. You know why Saul was chosen
of the people? Because they looked on the outward appearance. on
the outward appearance and this says here when God said he sees
the heart and I'm telling you something when he saw David and
when he sees us when God looks on the heart and everything God
does he deals with the heart with the heart man believeth
they were pricked in the heart And the heart, the natural heart
is deceitful and desperately wicked. Who can know it? So when
God looks on the heart of His chosen, His elect, you know what
He sees? He sees a heart purified by faith. He sees a heart that He Himself
put in there. He sees a heart that He made
and put it in there. If He looks on a heart, a man's
heart outside of Christ, He's going to see one desperately
wicked. and deceitful above everything.
And we know, only believers know how deceitful the heart is. The
world don't know it. My children don't know how deceitful
the heart is. Does any of your lost people
know how deceitful the heart is? You know the only people
who know anything about their heart and how deceitful it is,
is God's people. They know that they don't trust
themselves as far as they can spit. Ain't that right? And oh boy, I tell you then,
so when God looks on the heart, He got to look on what He put
there, one that He purified. And so seven people, seven of
Samuel's sons, Jesse's sons passed before Samuel. Not one of them,
God said, I've got a man, I've chosen a man after my own heart.
After my own heart. The son to Jesse been called
to the sacrifice, but there's one that they didn't call. You
know why they didn't call him? He was absolutely insignificant.
He's just a little old boy. He's out there tending sheep.
He's a shepherd. And he was so insignificant,
he was so little in the eyes of his own brothers and his daddy,
that he wasn't important enough to call to the feast. He wasn't
important enough to be called to the sacrifice. He was nobody
to his own family. Huh? How insignificant. Ain't that what they said about
our Master? They said, oh, is not here Joseph's son and Mary's
son? We know his brothers and sisters.
So he can't be, how does he say from heaven? What is he talking
about from heaven? We know his mama, we know his
daddy, we know his brothers and sisters. He ain't nobody. That's what they're saying about
him. That's why Samuel said, are all your sons here? No, but
go get him, go get him. And what's what he says now? In verse 12, And he sent and
brought him in. He was ruddy and withered of
a beautiful calendar, said, Goodly to look to. And listen to this
now. And the Lord said, Arise and
anoint him. For this is he. This one that
wasn't even considered. That's the one. that oh my bring
that despised one here bring that insignificant one in here
bring that shepherd boy in here and then look what he says in
verse 13 arise and anoint him for this is he then Samuel took
the horn of oil and anointed him Then when God, you know when
He anointed Him? When God said, this is He. You
know when He anointed Him? When the one that was ignored
of His brethren and His Father. That's when He anointed Him.
Then after all the proud flesh had paraded before Him and was
refused. Then when after the man of God's
own heart was brought. Then He said, anoint Him. Then
He said, anoint Him. And oh my, so let's look back
here. Let's look at the David is such
a type of our Lord Jesus Christ. God singled him out. And this
was the man of whom Christ was to come through David. He's the
son of David. According to the flesh, the son
of David. And so the anointing of David
and the anointing of our Lord Jesus Christ are spoken as one
anointing and one together. God considered them as one. Christ,
when He looked at David, He was thinking about His blessed Son.
And I can show you that. Look over here at Psalm 89. Get Psalm 89.20 with me. David's
throne, the anointing of David and Christ are spoken of as one
in the Scripture. And I'll tell you something else,
David's throne and Christ's throne are spoken of as one and the
same. Now we know that this whole psalm
here is about the Lord Jesus Christ. He said, I have found David my
servant, with my holy oil have I anointed him. So you see, him
and David, David and Christ considered the same one in this verse of
scripture. Christ was the seed of David.
And I want to show you something else. Now look, you know, their
throne is considered the same. Look at Luke chapter one, verse
32. I want to set this message up this way. Luke chapter one,
verse 32. Set this up so we you know this
this our Lord Jesus Christ Like I said, he's David's mentioned
54 times in the New Testament and every one of them goes back
and mentioned that he was the one that spoke of Christ and
who is a type of Christ, and God raised Christ up to sit on
David's throne. Now watch what he says. You remember
when God told David, He said, Your throne I will establish
forever and ever. David has been dead in his grave
for thousands of millennia, two millennia now. And yet God said,
Your throne is going to last forever. Well, whose throne lasts
forever? David's son, the Lord Jesus Christ. That's the only way in the world.
His throne can last forever. Now look here in verse 32. Talking
about the birth and when they came and announced the birth
of the Lord Jesus Christ. They hadn't been born yet. They
just announced His birth. He shall be great and shall be
called the Son of the Highest. Now listen to this. And the Lord
God shall give unto Him the throne of His Father David. So their thrones one and the
same. And let me tell you something that is typical, the character
of David's person is typical of our Lord Jesus Christ. You
know what David's name means? Beloved. Beloved. David's name means beloved. And
what did God say about his son? This is my beloved son. and whom I'm well pleased. And
then it says there that he was ruddy and wither of a beautiful
countenance. Well you tell me anybody more
beautiful than our Lord Jesus Christ. He's the fairest among
10,000 it said. It says our Lord Jesus Christ
is fairer than all the children of men. It said He's fairer than
all the people. And you look at David and say,
he's a beautiful countess. You look at the Lord Jesus Christ,
how beautiful, how precious. And in fact, they said, how beautiful
are the feet of our Lord Jesus Christ had brought. And our Lord
said, there's no beauty about him that we should desire him.
You know, when we see beauty about the Lord Jesus Christ,
when God said, this is He. This is my beloved. And oh my,
and then he's a shepherd. He was a shepherd. Our Lord Jesus
Christ is called a shepherd three ways. In fact, David said, the
Lord is my shepherd. David was a shepherd. What do you think our Lord Jesus
Christ is? The good shepherd lays down his
life for the sheep. Brought again from the dead,
the chief shepherd. And oh my, and when the great
shepherd of the sheep shall appear. So he's, you know, and as a shepherd,
David was a shepherd boy. And he had to watch out for them
sheep. I mean, he lived with those sheep 24 hours a day. If
one of them was sick, he had to tend it. If something got
a hold of one of them, he had to save it. He talked about how
a bear got a hold of one of them. He took and whipped the bear
and took the sheep out of his mouth and killed the bear. He
talked about a lion getting one of them. He killed the lion and
took the lamb out of his mouth. Now if David had done that as
a shepherd and protected his sheep like that, what in the
world do you think our shepherds are going to do for us? You know he got us out of the
two awfulest jaws that could have possibly held us. The first
one was sin. We was in the jaws of sin and
we could have never ever possibly broken loose ourselves from our
sin. It had been impossible. But he
came and got us out from the jaws of sin. How? By being made
sin for us. And then death He came death
had a handle on us dead and sick and how death had a hold on us
and Christ came and he conquered death and he conquered hell and
he brought us life The Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep Saved us from death You know, this body is going
to the grave, but I'm not going to the grave. Me, who I am, is
not going to the grave. And you, who you are as a person,
as God sees that person that God saved, you're not going to
the grave either. Your body is, but you're not. Oh, if David takes care of his
sheep like that, can you imagine what our Master is going to do
for us? Oh my! Oh Simon Peter, I'm going to
go with you to die with you. I'll go, I'll die with you. No,
no, you're not Peter. For the rooster crows, you're
going to deny me three times. But I prayed for you. I prayed
for you. You were my sheep. I prayed for
you. And that's the reason your faith
didn't fail you. And when God anointed David here,
when Samuel anointed David, we see a great, great type of our
Lord Jesus Christ. Christ, that's what Christ means,
the anointed one. The Messiah means the anointed
one. Now who anointed Christ? Our God did. God himself did. David was the first king of Israel. who was a shadow of the Lord
Jesus Christ, a type of the Lord Jesus Christ. Saul was anointed
too, but he was an absolute contrast to David and especially our Lord. God rejected him because he said
he rejected God. But David was a man after God's
own heart. What he said was that God and
his heart, whatever God willed, David willed. Whatever God delighted
in, David delighted in. Whatever God liked and loved,
David liked and loved. What God hated, David hated. But oh Aaron, you name, see all
the people that was, when you first, the first priest that
was ever anointed. He was the first high priest,
Aaron. And Aaron was a type of our priesthood of our Lord Jesus
Christ. Except our Lord Jesus is our
great high priest that's passed into the heavens. Elijah or Elisha,
the prophet was anointed by Elijah. Christ is our prophet, anointed
by God. And all three offices, king,
priest, and prophet were types of our Lord Jesus Christ centuries,
centuries and centuries before He ever come into this world.
And I'll show you what a great type He was. First of all, David
was anointed three times. David was anointed three times.
Let me show you what I'm talking about. Look over in 1 Samuel
16.13. Well, we're at Samuel 16, 13,
what am I talking about? But here he is anointed privately,
where we was, where I started at. He was anointed privately
there in his father's home. And then in 2 Samuel 2, look
where he's anointed over here. That first anoint was he anointed
over there in 1 Samuel. But look in 2 Samuel 2 in verse
4. Well, if I can get there myself,
I'm having a Bible sticking. Look down in verse 4. He was
anointed by the men of Judah. And Judah is the royal tribe.
All the kings came out of Judah. And he was the first king out
of the tribe of Judah. That's why Christ came out of
the tribe of Judah. And that's why he didn't come
out of Aaron's priesthood. But look what he said here in
verse 4. And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed
David king over the house of Judah. Oh, they anointed him
king. Now here's the third time that
he's done it, over in 2 Samuel chapter 5 and verse 3. is anointed
three times privately in his father's house publicly with
his anointed king over Judah and then he's anointed king over
all of Israel so all the elders of Israel came to the king to
Hebron and King David made a league with them before the Lord and
they anointed David king over Israel And our Lord was anointed three
times. Our Lord was anointed three times.
He was anointed when He was conceived. The scriptures tells us He was
conceived by the Holy Ghost. He was conceived by the Holy
Ghost. He was anointed in His mother's womb. And when He came
forth, He was full of grace and full of truth from His mother's
womb. He was conceived in His humanity
by the Holy Spirit. And then he was publicly anointed
at his baptism. God said, when you see the Spirit
of God, John said, when you see the Spirit of God come down in
the form of a dove and over whom it lies, that's the anointed
one. That's the Lord Jesus Christ.
and that's why he says this is my beloved son in whom I'm well
pleased hear him hear him God anointed Jesus Christ with the
Holy Ghost and he went about doing good and healing all that
were oppressed of the devil and the Spirit of the Lord came upon
him and then at his ascension the third anointing of our Lord
Jesus at his ascension the scripture said he was anointed with all
of gladness above his fellows and so God anointed David after
Saul to reign in Saul's room he took the crown off of that
one who was higher in stature than any among his people and
gave it to someone that people consider so insignificant down
in little old Bethlehem Bethlehem it did not amount to nothing
And you know who his grandmother was? Ruth. That's the first place you hear
David mentioned in the book of Ruth. Oh, God gave it to one from Bethlehem. One little among thousands of
Judah. And all the great kings, all the great kings will one
day see that one that was despised and rejected. they'll see that
one true king of kings the one who sits on David's throne and
his kingdom and dominion is from everlasting and has no end no
end at all. David sat on an earthly throne
our Lord Jesus Christ sits on a throne at the right hand of
God mighty sitting there in the majesty
in the heavens on the right hand of God God promised Abraham a
son he waited 30 years 30 years of trial before he was born and
God anointed David king over Israel before the kingdom was
actually ever given to him he even had to serve Saul for a
long time and he served Saul and he was the rightful king
and he served Saul and oh God greatly tried him He was hated. He was persecuted. He was outlawed
and hunted like a partridge upon the mountains. David said, why
in the world? He's praying to God. He said,
God, don't let my blood fall to the earth. He comes out as
a man talking about Saul. He comes out as a man after a
flea, after a partridge on the mountainside. Lord, hear my cry
and don't let my blood fall to the ground. And you know what? God answered him. You know what
God did? He said, I cried unto the Lord, and he inclined his
ear unto me. He cried, Lord, don't let my
blood fall to the ground. God heard him. God heard him. And I tell you, the believer,
we all have a glorious inheritance. God's given us a glorious, glorious
inheritance into our Lord Jesus Christ. but let me tell you before
we enter into that inheritance is through much tribulation that
we enter into the Kingdom of God must through great tribulation
enter into the Kingdom of God you know I remember years ago
I was going to a place and they believed in the seven years tribulation
you know after the Rapture of the church and for Christ sets
up his kingdom on the earth. There are seven years of great
tribulation They say in that great tribulation That's that's
to try people who didn't live It didn't make Christ Lord and
that's going to give them seven years of great tribulation and
if they'll endure that great tribulation to the end then they'll
be saved too And you know what I told them fellas that was?
I said, that's just nothing but a Baptist Purgatory. That's just Baptist Purgatory.
You didn't live right for Jesus in here. You just accepted Savior.
You didn't ever let Him be Lord. Well, then you got to go to seven
years. You got to serve seven years to be saved. And I preached
from that Acts 14, 22 quoted it one time. And them folks got
so mad, they couldn't hardly stand themselves. I mean, they
got angry. I said, you talking about seven
years tribulation? If you're in the kingdom of God,
it's through much tribulation that we go into the kingdom of
God. You ask Bruce Crabtree about
a tribulation. You ask Don about tribulation.
Ask you about tribulation. Ask some of you that's lost children.
Ask some of you that's lost husbands and wives. Tell me, tell about
the divorces and all the things you went through. Is that tribulation? And I tell you what, and that's
what, we through faith and patience inherit the promises. But all
this, and he said, you just wait, you be patient. for the Lord's
tarrying but he's coming he's coming you just with patience
wait for it he's coming and that's what we do we just we just every
day we get up waiting for the Lord to come every day we get
up waiting for the Lord to come and oh and God is far David to
utter unfold and over and over and over the glorious work of
redemption of our Lord Jesus Christ. He did it in Psalms.
He did it in Psalms. He was the sweet psalmist of
Israel. He had the spirit of prophecy.
That's what Peter said on the day of Pentecost. And you go
through the Psalms and you look at how many times David spoke
of Christ. Spoke of the Lord Jesus Christ. He spoke of His incarnation. He spoke about Christ coming
and being born into this world. Then He spoke about His life.
He talked about His obedience in His life. He said, I delight
to do thy will. Oh God, I will, I delight to
do. He said, I restored that which
I took not away. David didn't take anything, didn't
restore anything. Then he talked about his death.
All of Psalm 22 is about the death of our Lord Jesus Christ. Then he talked about his resurrection. Thou will not leave thy soul
in hell, neither will thou suffer thy holy one to see corruption.
Then he talked about his ascension. My Lord said unto my Lord, sit
at my right hand till I make enemies your footstool. Oh, how
many times David knew something about Christ. He talked about
His satisfaction. And He talked about His intercession.
Oh the Lord, plead my cause. And he sang about his offices
of prophet, his offices of priest, his offices of king. Look over
here at Psalm 98. Look at Psalm 98. Look what happened. Look what he says here about
our master. And all of Psalm 68 is about the covenant that
God made with Christ. Psalm 98. Verse 1 and 2. Look what David
says here about our Lord. And you know he says the salvation
of the righteous is of the Lord. And he said the first thing he
said in Psalm 2 is he said, listen, he said the Lord will have them
in derision. Laugh at them. The kings of the earth is gathered
against his anointed who are against Christ. You know what
God said? I'm going to laugh at him. You
know what I'm going to do? I'm going to set my king. I'm
going to set my king on the holy hillside. Look what he said. Oh, sing unto the Lord a new
song. What are we going to sing about
David? For he hath done marvelous things. Listen to this now. His right
hand and his holy arm hath gotten him the victory. Who is his right
hand and who is his holy arm? The Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord
hath made known his salvation. How did he make it known? Through
his blessed sight. His righteousness. Whose righteousness? God's righteousness. In our Lord
Jesus hath he openly showed in the sight of the heathen. That's me and you. That's us. Oh, of the great salvation. He
talked about the great salvation he would accomplish. And the
benefits of his people. He said, in the day of thy power,
not David's power. He said, in the day of thy power,
thy people shall be made willing. Now who is he talking about had
the power to make us willing? Was it David? Of course not.
Look with me now, Psalm 89. I want to show you this and I'll
wind this thing up. Psalm 89. This whole thing here is about
the covenant and how God promises in the covenant of grace to save
us all through the Lord Jesus Christ. Here's the union between
Christ and His blessed church. Psalm 89 and verse 19. Then thou spakest in vision to
thy holy one. Now this is God saying, I have
laid help upon one that is mighty. I have exalted one chosen out
of the people. I have found David my servant,
with my holy oil have I anointed him. With whom my hand shall
be established, mine arm shall also strengthen him. The enemy
shall not exact upon him, nor the son of witnesses afflict
him. I will beat down his foes before his face, and flagged
them that hate him. But my faithfulness and my mercy
shall be with him, and in my name shall his horn be exalted. Look down at verse 27. Listen
here now. Also I will make him my firstborn,
than the kings of the earth. My mercy will I keep for him
forevermore and my covenant shall stand fast with him. Thank God
that covenant stands fast with Christ. His seed also will I
make to endure forever and his throne as the days of heaven. So David spoke so much about
our Lord Jesus Christ. And David conquered and reigned
in Jerusalem. And you know Jerusalem is called
the city of God, the city of David. And that's also typical
of church, the city of God, Zion. God dwells inside His church.
And I'll tell you something, David's anointing was not an
empty ceremony. It wasn't just an empty ceremony.
But God's power, ain't that what it says there? In verse 13 again,
here in 1 Samuel 16. It wasn't an empty serenade. Spirit came upon him. Then Samuel
took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brethren,
and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forth. Then the Lord, the Spirit departed
from Saul, and an evil spirit came. Saul's going down, David's
coming up. And when he was anointed, the
Spirit of the Lord came upon him. And that's the way our Lord
was at his baptism. So oh my, David, what a significant
character. So much, so much of our Lord
Jesus Christ mentioned by David. And he's a direct descendant
of David. Our Father, O our Father, in
the precious name of the Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for this
word of truth. Thank you for the blessed things
that you've taught your people. That Christ our Lord Jesus Christ
was made after the seed of David according to the flesh. Oh, what a lineage he has. David's
grandmother Ruth Amoribitas, Rahab the harlot, our Lord Jesus
Christ did indeed identify with sinners, did indeed identified with such as ourselves
and we thank you for it and bless you for it. and teach us and
instruct us from your precious word. For Christ's sake I pray.
Amen. Amen. Good night and God bless
you.
