The sermon titled "Storm Warning #178," delivered by various speakers, mainly addresses the doctrine of Christ's exaltation and intercession, particularly focusing on His position at the right hand of God. The preachers emphasize that "the right hand" is a figurative expression representing blessing, authority, strength, honor, and intercession, rather than a literal anatomical position. Key Scripture references include Romans 8:34 and Hebrews 8:1, which illustrate Christ’s authority and role as our High Priest, who intercedes for believers. The practical significance lies in the assurance believers receive from understanding Christ's sovereign power and His role in their salvation, reinforcing the Reformed doctrine of total dependence on God’s grace and sovereignty for salvation.

Key Quotes

“When we say Christ sits at God's right hand, we are saying not that God has a literal hand, but that Christ is seated in the place of blessing.”

“If the protection of the Almighty covers you, what sword can kill you? Rest secure.”

“Salvation was and is neither by our works nor our wills... but of God that showeth mercy.”

“It is imperative that you flee to Christ Jesus today, not tomorrow, for none of us are promised another day on this planet.”

What does the Bible say about salvation by grace?

The Bible teaches that salvation is by God's sovereign grace, not by our works or wills.

The Scriptures clearly affirm that salvation is by grace alone, as exemplified in Romans 9:15-16, where it states, 'For He says to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.' This indicates that God's mercy is not based on human effort but solely on His divine will. Additionally, Ephesians 2:8-9 underscores that it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. Thus, salvation is rooted in God's choice and not in our deserving actions. This truth is crucial as it highlights the total dependence of believers on God's mercy for reconciliation with Him.

Romans 9:15-16, Ephesians 2:8-9

How do we know Jesus intercedes for us?

The Bible assures us that Jesus is at the right hand of God, interceding for believers.

The intercessory role of Christ is affirmed in Romans 8:34, which states, 'Who is he that condemns? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.' This passage indicates that after His resurrection, Jesus maintains His role as our High Priest, continually advocating for us. Hebrews 8:1 echoes this by stating that we have such a high priest who is set on the right hand of the throne of the majesty in the heavens. The significance of Christ's intercession is profound; it assures believers of His ongoing support and advocacy before the Father, emphasizing His power and love towards those He has redeemed.

Romans 8:34, Hebrews 8:1

Why is the sovereignty of God important in salvation?

God's sovereignty in salvation ensures that it is His mercy and grace alone that saves us.

Understanding God's sovereignty in salvation is essential as it highlights that salvation relies entirely on God's will and not human initiative. As Romans 9:16 states, 'So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy.' This sovereignty means that God, in His grace, chooses whom He will save, thereby ensuring that His glory is foregrounded in the salvation narrative, rather than any merit from our side. Moreover, this understanding leads to genuine humility in believers, as it directs our gaze away from self and towards the Almighty God for our salvation. This truth not only comforts but also encourages us to rest in the fact that our salvation is secure in the hands of a sovereign and merciful God, as highlighted in Isaiah 42:8, where God emphasizes His refusal to share glory with another.

Romans 9:16, Isaiah 42:8

your own follow-up study. And so we begin with the weekend
gospel message to follow for all hands. Heads up! Please find enclosed encouragement
in so great salvation by the perfect and finished work of
our Lord Jesus Christ in saving poor, needy, and wretched sinners
by His sovereign free grace. That is to say, Almighty God
in His unmerited favor to save me and you from our sins and
from hell. Jesus at the right hand. Part
two. There's a story about a pilot
in a small plane who lost his way in a thick fog and in a state
of panic sent out a distress call. Mayday, mayday. Can anyone
out there hear me? The duty officer in a nearby
control tower responded and after identifying himself asks, what
is your present height and position? The pilot answers, I'm six feet
tall and I'm sitting in the front seat of the plane. Misapplying
a literal question can be confusing, but when reading the Bible, mistaking
the figurative for the literal brings confusion twice confounded. This is what happens when we
fail to see that the term the right hand is figurative, or
more correctly, anthropomorphic language, language that describes
human characteristics to non-human things. There are several meanings
associated with the right hand. First, the right hand is a hand
of blessing. Consider Genesis 48, and when
Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head
of Ephraim, it displeased him. And he held up his father's hand
to remove it from Ephraim's head unto Manasseh's head. And Joseph
said unto his father, Not so my father, for this is the firstborn. Put thy right hand upon his head.
When we say Christ sits at God's right hand, We are saying not
that God has a literal hand, but that Christ is seated in
the place of blessing. Furthermore, the right hand is
a place of cosmic authority and rulership. Speaking of Jesus,
it says in 1 Peter 3, 22, who has gone into heaven is on the
right hand of God, angels and authorities and powers being
made subject unto Him. The right hand is further seen
as the place of strength. Consider Psalm 98.1. Oh, sing
unto the Lord a new song, for he hath done marvelous things.
His right hand and his holy arm hath gotten him the victory. Is the right hand in this verse
literal? Did a whopping great hand reach out of heaven and
knock the enemy off their horses? Of course not. But when victory
is obtained by the right hand, it means that God's authority,
power, and strength achieved this success. The right hand
is also a place of honor. We read in 1 Kings 2, Bethsheba
therefore went unto King Solomon to speak unto him for Adonijah.
And the king rose up to meet her and bowed himself unto her
and sat down on his throne and caused a seat to be set for the
king's mother. And she sat on his right hand.
Here, the right hand was literal, not anthropomorphic, and it gives
us an example of the honor associated with this term. The right hand
is also a place of power. We read, And Jesus said, I am,
and ye shall see the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of
power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. Mark 14, 62. An old theologian and preacher
of righteousness said, the right hand is the place of power. Christ
at the right hand of God has all power in heaven and in earth. Who shall fight against the people
who have such power vested in their captain? Oh, my soul, what
can destroy thee if omnipotence be thy helper? If the protection
of the Almighty covers you, what sword can kill you? Rest secure. If Jesus is your all-prevailing
King and has trodden your enemies beneath His feet, if sin, death,
and hell are all vanquished by Him and you are represented in
Him, by no possibility can you be destroyed. Furthermore, The
right hand is the place of intercession. Jesus sits at God's right hand
where he intercedes as the high priest for believers. Consider
this, in Romans 8, verse 34. Who is he that condemns? It is
Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even
at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Thankfully so. In Hebrews 8 verse
1, now of the things which we have spoken, this is the sum.
We have such a high priest who is set on the right hand of the
throne of the majesty in the heavens. Christ, our priest,
intercedes for us from a position of blessing, favor, honor, power,
and authority. And as our king applies all the
gospel benefits he has obtained for us in his doing and dying,
So let us summarize. Many people use Hebrews 10 and
12 about Jesus being seated on the right hand of God as an excuse
for discounting that Christ is God. Now, I don't want to come
across as being frivolous or facetious, but think about it.
How could someone sit on someone else's right hand for 2,000 years?
For Christ, however, to sit on the right hand of God is a declaration
that he is God. He is the one seated with cosmic
authority and power, who as the God-man is seated in the place
of favor, acceptance, honor, strength, and blessing on behalf
of God's people. And that's the gospel truth. Folks, I apologize for the My
telephone's going off. Okay, moving on here. That good message was from preacher
Myles McKee, reading from Ephesians 1, verses 19 and 20. And what
is the exceeding greatness of his power to Usward, who believed
according to the working of his mighty power, which he wrought
in Christ when he raised him from the dead? man needs to be
roused by a mighty and effectual power out of his state of sleep
and death. It is not a little pull, a gentle
snatch at his coat, a slight tug of his sleeve which will
pull him out of his sins. He must be snatched from them
as a person would be snatched out of bed when the house is
on fire or pulled out of the river when sinking for the last
time. Let us never think that the work
of grace upon the heart is a slight or superficial one. Indeed, there
needs a mighty work of grace upon a sinner's heart to deliver
him from his destructions. We always, therefore, find the
work of grace to begin by a spiritual sight and sense of our ruined
condition before God. But this alone will not suffice
to make us true-hearted disciples of Jesus. It is a preparation,
a most needful preparation for a sight of the King and His beauty. But it is not the same thing
as to see and believe in the Son of God unto eternal life.
We must have something far beyond any convictions of sin or any
sense of our lost and ruined condition. We must have, by faith,
a view of the blessed Lord more or less manifested to our souls
by that Holy Spirit whose office it is to take of the things of
Christ and to reveal them to the heart so as to see His suitability,
His grace, His glory, His work, His blood, His obedience, and
to see these divine and blessed realities by the eye of faith
as to know and feel for ourselves that they are exactly adapted
to our case and state. They are the very things we require
to save us from the wrath to come. And that so far as we have
an interest in them, we are saved from the floods of destruction.
Wherever this believing sight of Christ is given to the soul,
He creates and maintains a faith that works by love. Thus, whenever
or wherever there is a view of Jesus by the eye of faith, wherever
he manifests and makes himself in any measure precious to the
soul, love is a certain fruit of it. For we love him because
he first loved us. And when we begin to love the
Lord, Love gives us a binding tie which creates union and communion
with Him. As then He unveils His lovely
face and discovers more and more of His beauty and blessedness,
it gives Him a firm place in the heart's warmest, tenderest
affections. And then He comes and takes up
His abode in the soul and rules there as its rightful Lord. The
following things, therefore, are indispensably necessary to
true discipleship. First, a spiritual sense. of our lost, ruined condition. Then, a knowledge of Christ by
a gracious discovery of His suitability, beauty, and blessedness. And
thirdly, a faith in Him that works by love and purifies the
heart, overcomes the world, and delivers from death and hell. Outstanding message from old-timer
preacher J.C. Philpott. God alone must be glorified. Why is it so important that we
who claim to be saved by grace and to believe and rest in the
Lord Jesus Christ to know that salvation was and is neither
by our works nor our wills? It is because God had designed
the salvation of his people for his own glory. And his glory
is found in the truth of salvation by his powerful work and his
sovereign will alone. For as it is written in Romans
9 and also Exodus 33, for he saith to Moses, I will have mercy
on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom
I will have compassion. So then, it is not of him that
willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy."
Hallelujah. God is the only one worthy of
this glory, and He will not share His glory with another. See Isaiah
42, 8, also 1 Corinthians 1, verses 29 through 31. Also in
our salvation, God intends to humble us by a clear and honest
view of ourselves. Our sinfulness, spiritual death,
and depravity, our complete lack of righteousness, and our deservedness
of condemnation so that we see our complete dependence upon
Him alone and in and by the Lord Jesus Christ for our whole salvation. See John 1 verses 12 and 13,
Romans chapter 3, verses 10 through 12, and also
1 Corinthians 2, 14. Salvation is designed by God
to give all glory to his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, as Lord,
our only righteousness. See Galatians 6, 14, Philippians
3, verses 3 through 9, and Colossians 1, verses 15 through 18. For
of him and through him and to him are all things to whom be
glory forever. Amen. That was Romans 11, 36. And that sound message came from
preacher Bill Parker. It is written in Isaiah 45, 22,
where our Lord Jesus Christ commands, look unto me and be saved. All
the ends of the earth for I am God and there is none else. The
Lord Jesus also says in Matthew chapter 11, come unto me, all
you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly
in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke
is easy and my burden is light. Friends, it is imperative that
you flee to Christ Jesus today, not tomorrow, for none of us
are promised another day on this planet. Today is the day of salvation. Oh, great is our Lord Jesus Christ
and greatly to be praised. Take heart, friends. Our mighty
and glorious King of glory is inbound for his afflicted saints. Even so, come quickly, Lord Jesus,
Maranatha.
